This paper addresses the issue of engineering education for sustainable development. In an attempt to facilitate a better integration of sustainability teaching into the engineering curriculum, it seeks to provide answers to the following fundamental questions: (1) How much do engineering students know about sustainable development? (2) What are the knowledge gaps? (3) What could be the best approach to educating engineering students for sustainable development? Some answers to the first two questions have been provided by carrying out a world-wide survey of engineering students on their level of knowledge and understanding of sustainable development. The survey results suggest that, overall, the level of knowledge is not satisfactory and that significant knowledge gaps exist. However, an encouraging result is that students believe that sustainable development is important for engineers, although they often have difficulties in making a direct link between the theory of sustainable development and engineering practice. To address the third question, the paper then discusses the implications of these findings for the engineering curriculum. It also illustrates an approach to teaching sustainability that could help to stimulate students' interest in this subject during their studies and to ensure their commitment to practising sustainable engineering later as professionals. This study explores how engineering academic teachers perceive their practical knowledge on learning and feedback. Academic teachers and education directors of different disciplines in an engineering university were interviewed. Responses were analysed using the matrix method and cross-case analysis. Five different profiles emerged that provided insight into educators' practical knowledge on learning and feedback and the associated relations. Feedback is not only a necessary tool to foster learning but is also intrinsically interlinked to learning. Learning and feedback were observed to be dynamic during the study programme. Findings suggest that learning theories can be useful to label, describe, and interpret practical knowledge on learning and feedback. Surveys of graduate destinations typically suffer from relatively low response rates and therefore this study sought to develop a new methodology for tracking graduate destinations using LinkedIn. Research in this area with engineering graduates has also been limited, and thus this study, focusing on chemical engineering graduates from the University of Cape Town, brings new insights to a debate usually characterised by untested assumptions. Following the graduating cohorts from 2006 to 2012, it was shown that about a quarter go on to postgraduate studies. Of those that proceed to the workplace, the vast majority go into traditional graduate chemical engineering jobs in operations, mostly in the petrochemical and mining sectors in this South African context. The study sought to determine the potential impact of the 2008 recession on these graduate destinations but the results are inconclusive in that regard. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article announces the launching of the "Education for Chemical Engineers" (ECE), an online journal from the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), with the aim of becoming the principal international journal for chemical, process and biomolecular engineering education. ECE has been declared the official journal of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering. Doctor David Shallcross of the University of Melbourne, Australia, is the editor of the journal supported by an international editorial board. The journal has already established a global subscriber base and published papers from Europe, Australasia, and North America.
