Psychological distress (including depression and anxiety) is common in the first years of cancer diagnosis but can differ by country and region. The aim of the present paper was to review the prevalence of psychological distress among cancer patients in the Southeast Asia (SEA) region. A systematic literature search was carried out using several databases (i.e., PubMed, PsychARTICLES, Embase, CINAHI, Web of Sciences, Plus, Scopus, and AHMED). Papers originally published in English language were taken into consideration if they (i) were published from 2010 to 2021 and (ii) reported the prevalence of psychological distress among patients with different types of cancer. A total of 23 studies met the inclusion criteria. The most frequently employed psychometric instrument for anxiety and depression screening was the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The prevalence of anxiety (ranging from 7% to 88%) was wider than that of depression (ranging from 3% to 65.5%) among patients with different types of cancer and living in various countries in the SEA region. The overall prevalence rate of psychological distress among cancer patients from the SEA region was not fundamentally very different from that of general populations. These findings provide useful information for health professionals and cancer patients to understand the negative role of psychological distress in quality of life and health. The research findings demonstrate the importance of counselling for psychological distress among cancer patients as means of effectively resolving their psychological problems and ultimately improving the quality of oncology medical care. Clinical recommendations for cancer management should incorporate the early identification of (and therapy for) psychological distress, as well as their monitoring during treatment. Introduction: Although there is growing evidence the Clinical Nurse Specialist role makes a difference to patient care, the full value of this service may not be always appreciated with current models not meeting the needs of those with cancer. The primary aim of this integrative literature review was to evaluate outcomes associated with the role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist in cancer care. The secondary aim was to identify the components of the Clinical Nurse Specialist role in cancer care from the included papers in the literature review. Methods: An integrative literature review using a systematic approach was adopted. Literature searches were undertaken in four databases and supplemented with a search in the grey literature and reference lists of included papers. Searches were limited to January 2009‐July 2019 and those written in the English language. Three reviewers independently completed the searches and reviewed the papers before reaching a consensus. Results: Fourteen eligible research papers were identified. Evaluations were predominately positive with the role contributing to improving patient outcomes with regards psychological support, information provision, symptom management, service coordination and patient satisfaction. Conclusion: The findings of this literature review firmly establish the Clinical Nurse Specialist as a valuable member of the multidisciplinary team in enhancing cancer care services. Introduction. This review sought to synthesise the qualitative evidence pertaining to the experiences of myeloma patients and relatives of work, given the distinct symptom burden and illness trajectory. Methods and Designs. CINAHL, Medline, Web of Science, PsychINFO, SocIndex were searched on 22-Apr-2022. No limiters were used for language or date of publication. CASP was used for critical appraisal. An integrative synthesis was conducted to inductively construct analytic themes PROSPERO CRD42022323137. Results. 34 articles were included, published from 2004 to 2022. Nineteen were assessed as having low risk of bias, and four with moderate risk of bias. The following four themes were derived from analysis of the papers: (i) side effects, medicines, and stigma; (ii) relationships; (iii) creation and maintenance of identity; (iv) privilege and income. Conclusion. Myeloma impacts the engagement of patients and relatives in paid and unpaid work, yet very little is currently known on how the cancer impacts these important interdependent systems. Addressing workplace stigma, understanding the role of workplace relationships, the construction of self through work, interpreting data through a lens of life-course and, privilege offer helpful starting points. This paper aims to report on a systematic review of qualitative studies on men's reflections on participating in cancer rehabilitation. Nine databases were systematically searched to identify qualitative papers published between 2000 and 2013. Papers were selected by pre-defined inclusion criteria and subsequently critically appraised. Key themes were extracted and synthesised. Fifteen papers were selected and represented. Four central themes were identified in the analytical process: 'changed life perspective', 'the masculinity factor', 'a desire to get back to normal' and 'the meaning of work'. Six peripheral themes were identified: 'the meaning of context', 'music', 'physical training', 'religion', 'humour' and 'the unmentionable'. The themes were synthesised into an integrative model representing men's reflections on participating in cancer rehabilitation. We conclude that existing qualitative literature offers insight into men's reflections on cancer rehabilitation and highlights the interrelationship between men's reflections on their changed life perspective, masculinity, orientation towards a normal life and getting back to work. Further research-based knowledge is needed to explore (1) the underlying causes and patterns of the men's needs, preferences and choices in rehabilitation; and (2) the health professional perspective on male cancer rehabilitation. Clinical practice in haematological oncology often involves difficult diagnostic and treatment decisions. In this context, understanding patients' information needs and the functions that information serves for them is particularly important. We systematically reviewed qualitative and quantitative evidence on haematological oncology patients' information needs to inform how these needs can best be addressed in clinical practice. Psyc INFO, Medline and CINAHL Plus electronic databases were searched for relevant empirical papers published from January 2003 to July 2016. Synthesis of the findings drew on meta-ethnography and meta-study. Most quantitative studies used a survey design and indicated that patients are largely content with the information they receive from physicians, however much or little they actually receive, although a minority of patients are not content with information. Qualitative studies suggest that a sense of being in a caring relationship with a physician allows patients to feel content with the information they have been given, whereas patients who lack such a relationship want more information. The qualitative evidence can help explain the lack of association between the amount of information received and contentment with it in the quantitative research. Introduction: With rapid changes in treatments for colorectal cancer (CRC), qualitative research into CRC survivorship requires greater synthesis. This paper aims to fill this gap through a systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42019131576) and thematic synthesis of the qualitative literature on survivorship experiences across early‐stage and advanced CRC survivors. Methods: CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and PubMed were searched for qualitative CRC survivorship papers. Titles, abstracts and full texts were screened. Included articles (n = 81) underwent data extraction, CASP qualitative bias ratings and thematic synthesis. Results: Bowel dysfunction caused functional limitations and negative quality of life (QoL), while stomas posed threats to body image and confidence. Physical symptoms hindered return to work, increasing financial burdens. Survivors' unmet needs included information regarding symptom expectations and management, and ongoing support throughout recovery. Advanced and early‐stage survivors shared similar experiences. Advanced survivors struggled with fear of cancer recurrence/progression and feelings of powerlessness. Functional limitations, financial impacts and sexuality in advanced survivors were underexplored areas. Conclusion: CRC and its treatments impact survivors' QoL in all areas. A coordinated supportive care response is required to address survivors' unmet needs. Future qualitative studies should explore advanced CRC subpopulations, treatment‐specific impacts on QoL and long‐term (>5 years) impacts on CRC survivors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The present review aimed to establish prevalence rates of anxiety and depression in adults with haematology cancer, with a focus on the differences between patients under treatment and patients under watchful waiting. Method: Five databases (Scopus, Medline, PsycINFO, EThOS, CINAHL) were searched throughout June 2021. Key search terms included haematology cancer, anxiety, depression, in treatment and watchful waiting. Study and sample characteristics, prevalence rates and mean self‐reported scores of anxiety and depression data were extracted. Results: A total of 18 eligible papers were included in the review. Quality appraisal indicated papers were of adequate standard. Depression data from 2720 participants (14.5% under watchful waiting) and anxiety data from 2520 participants (15.9% under watchful waiting) were analysed through subgroup meta‐analyses. The prevalence of anxiety was 34% amongst adults receiving treatment and 24.5% amongst those under watchful waiting. The prevalence of depression amongst adults receiving treatment was 31.3%, significantly higher than 16.1% of adults under watchful waiting. Conclusion: Overall, adults with haematology cancer were at greater risk of experiencing anxiety and depression than the general population, with greatest risk in those under treatment. Abstract: This systematic review synthesises the literature on Communication Skills Training (CST) programmes for oncology professionals to identify their core components and compare them with the recommendations formulated in a position paper based on a European expert consensus meeting. A systematic literature search was conducted using MEDLINE (OVID and PUBMED), CINAHL, EMBASE, PSYCHINFO, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library. The analytic approach relied on an a priori framework based on the position paper's recommendations, generating several themes. Forty‐nine articles were included. The CST programmes reported between 2010 and 2016 were heterogeneous. Some recommendations, especially those regarding content and pedagogic tools, were followed by most providers, while others, such as setting, objectives and participants, were not. This synthesis raises questions on how CST programmes are conceived and how they could or should be conceived in future. While medicine, especially clinical communication, is socially and culturally embedded, some recommendations regarding CST programmes seem to be universally valuable, contributing to ensure quality and enhanced credibility, and thus endorsement and sustained implementation, of CST programmes in the oncology setting. Integrated care is an underpinning concept of contemporary health care policy proffered as a strategy to overcome the fragmentations in care encountered by people with complex care needs (Shaw et al. [2011] What is Integrated Care? An Overview of Integrated Care in the NHS). Cancer patients have potential to benefit from such policy, often having needs that extend beyond cancer. This paper seeks to understand how the concept of integrated care is used in the cancer literature. A search of leading databases was conducted for original research relating to integrated care or an integration intervention aiming to improve outcomes of cancer patients, and analysed using textual narrative synthesis. 38 papers were included, each with a focus on improving cancer-specific aspects of care enhancing the capabilities of the cancer multidisciplinary team. Of the eight studies involving integration between the cancer service and other care providers, all focused on utilising the external provider to deliver aspects of cancer care or placed them in a passive role, as survey participant, a recipient of cancer-related clinical information or as the comparator 'usual care' arm. Within the cancer literature, integration is predominantly used to describe initiatives to improve cancer-related aspects of care. Background. Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a form of peritoneal malignancy. It originates from a perforated appendiceal epithelial tumour. Patients with PMP experience various stressful and traumatic events including diagnosis with a rare disease, treatment with extensive and complex surgery, and long hospital stays. Currently, there is a scarcity of studies that primarily aim to assess the quality of life of patients with PMP, and there is no reviews or comprehensive understanding of the quality of life (QoL) issues faced by these patients. Even fewer studies have consulted with patients themselves. Objective. To review the current literature on the QoL of patients with PMP and answer two main questions: What methods are being used to assess the QoL patients with PMP and what are the main findings?. Methods. For the scoping review, five scientific databases were searched (CINAHL, EMBASE, Pubmed, PsycInfo, and Medline). Publications that were published between 2002 and 2022 and in English were included in this review. Studies were screened by two independent reviewers against the review's eligibility criteria. Data related to the QoL of patients with PMP in the included studies were extracted to answer two main questions (what were the methods used to assess QoL in this population, and what were the findings?). The extracted data was presented in table form and qualitatively analyzed using content analysis. Findings. Fourteen studies were included in this review. Only five studies out of fourteen assessed the QoL of patients with PMP as a main outcome, and all these studies assessed QoL in relation to surgery. Studies that assessed QoL used different validated measures. There was a consensus among studies that patients' QoL improved by 12 months posttreatment. The most commonly cited symptom of PMP in this review is abdominal pain. Conclusion. The evidence on the QoL of patients with PMP is limited. Studies that assess the quality of life of these patients independent of surgery are needed. There is no consensus on the measure used to assess QoL in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Cancer patients and caregivers have myriad unmet needs which can have detrimental consequences on their psychosocial wellbeing. This systematic review aims to identify the unmet supportive care needs of immigrant and native Chinese cancer patients and caregivers. Methods: We systematically searched various electronic databases (e.g. Scopus, CINAHL, PsycInfo, etc.) from the earliest date available until January 2018. Additional studies were identified through reference lists and citation tracking. Eligibility criteria included: (a) qualitative, quantitative and/or mixed methods studies published in English; (b) immigrant and native Chinese cancer patients and/or caregivers (age ≥18 years); (c) unmet needs and/or their correlates. Studies were assessed for their risk of bias, and a narrative synthesis of findings was performed. Results: Forty‐seven papers from 45 studies met eligibility criteria. The most prevalent area of unmet needs was health system and information. Patients most commonly desired one member of the hospital to talk to about all aspects of their care. Caregivers preferred information about the patient's prognosis and likely outcome. Anxiety was most commonly associated with higher levels of health system and information needs. Conclusion: Chinese patients and caregivers experience a range of unmet health system and information needs, which differ depending on their stage along the cancer trajectory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many individuals affected by cancer who experience emotional distress report not wanting help. This review aims to understand why individuals affected by cancer seek, accept or decline help for emotional distress and what influences these actions. A systematic review and thematic synthesis of the qualitative literature was conducted. Using pre‐defined search terms, four electronic databases were searched from January 2000 to May 2016. Pre‐determined inclusion and exclusion criteria were then applied. Identified papers were quality appraised. In total, 32 papers were included in the synthesis. Four themes emerged from data synthesis: attaining normality—the normality paradox; being emotionally literate; perceptions of help; needs‐support gap. Attaining normality is ideographic, context dependent and temporally situated; some individuals maintain normality by not seeking/declining help whereas others seek/accept help to achieve a new normality. Thus, attaining normality paradoxically functions to explain both why individuals sought/accepted help or did not seek/declined help. Data indicate that a context dependent, systems thinking approach is merited to enhance psychosocial care. In particular, clinicians must actively explore the personal context of an individual's distress to ensure that help desired and help offered are mutually understood. Introduction: Prevalence rates of human papillomavirus positive (HPV+) head and neck cancers (HNC) have increased over the last decades. Communicating about HPV is an increasingly relevant part of HNC patient care. This systematic review was conducted to explore healthcare professionals' (HCP) views and experiences of discussing HPV with HNC patients. It also examined perceptions among different HCP groups of their professional roles in HPV discussions. Methods: A narrative synthesis of qualitative research was conducted. Three databases—Embase, PsycINFO and CINAHL+—were searched from January 2007 to August 2018. Relevant data were extracted and synthesised thematically. Results: Five studies were identified: four were qualitative and one used mixed methods. HCPs varied in their experience and views of discussing HPV. HCPs who engaged in these discussions believed they were beneficial for patients. All HCPs described the need to address their HPV knowledge deficits in order to provide clear HPV information. Changes in professional roles which were linked to HPV communication for HCPs involved in HNC patient care were also evident. Conclusions: Effective HPV discussions are an important part of patient‐provider interactions. Evidence‐based interventions and professional development activities which support HCPs in their HPV discussions with patients would be valuable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Patient misunderstanding of cancer clinical trial participation is identified as a critical issue and researchers have developed and tested a variety of interventions to improve patient understanding. This systematic review identified nine papers published between 2000 and 2013, to evaluate the effects of interventions to improve patient understanding of cancer clinical trial participation. Types of interventions included audio-visual information, revised written information and a communication training workshop. Interventions were conducted alone or in combination with other forms of information provision. The nine papers, all with methodological limitations, reported mixed effects on a small range of outcomes regarding improved patient understanding of cancer clinical trial participation. The methodological limitations included: (1) the intervention development process was poorly described; (2) only a small element of the communication process was addressed; (3) studies lacked evidence regarding what information is essential and critical to enable informed consent; (4) studies lacked reliable and valid outcome measures to show that patients are sufficiently informed to provide consent; and (5) the intervention development process lacked a theoretical framework. Future research needs to consider these factors when developing interventions to improve communication and patient understanding during the informed consent process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review aimed to assess participation rates of childhood cancer survivors ( CCS) invited to fill out a health-related questionnaire. Additionally, effects of study and CCS characteristics on participation rates were examined. PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid ( EMBASE) and CINAHL databases were searched. Publications included were questionnaire-based studies among CCS diagnosed with cancer before the age of 21, alive at least 5 years past diagnosis and aged 16 years or older at the time of study. Thirty-five studies were included; the median participation rate was 65%. Sixteen studies reported information about CCS actively declining participation (median rate 5%). Five study characteristics seemed to influence participation rates: the use of reminders and incentives, the option to answer a shortened questionnaire, the recruitment of participants through their general practitioner and a pre-notification before sending out the questionnaire. Furthermore, CCS characteristics related to improved participation were female gender, Caucasian ethnicity and a higher educational level. The results of this study will help to improve the (methodological) quality of future questionnaire-based studies among CCS, thereby increasing our knowledge about late effects among this group of survivors. Prostate cancer ( PCa) can negatively impact on men's sexual, urinary and emotional functioning, affecting quality of life. Most men with PCa are older (≥65 years), married and heterosexual and little is known about the impact on men who are younger, unpartnered or gay. We aimed to synthesise existing qualitative research on these three groups of men. A systematic metasynthesis was undertaken that included data on the unique impacts of PCa on younger (<65 years) ( n = 7 papers), unpartnered ( n = 17 papers) or gay or bisexual men ( n = 11 papers) using a modified meta-ethnographic approach. The three overarching constructs illustrated the magnified disruption to men's biographies, that included: marginalisation, isolation and stigma-relating to men's sense of being 'out of sync'; the burden of emotional and embodied vulnerabilities and the assault on identity-illustrating the multiple threats to men's work, sexual and social identities; shifting into different communities of practice-such as the shift from being part of a sexually active community to celibacy. These findings suggest that PCa can have a particular impact on the quality of life of younger, unpartnered and gay men. Introduction: Whilst there has been a wealth of research on benefits of physical activity (PA) in people with cancer, with three published reviews of reviews, no review of reviews has focused on older adults (65 years or older) who may have unique biological characteristics and barriers. We summarised PA effectiveness from reviews where majority of study participants were 65 years or older. Methods: Six databases were searched for systematic reviews of randomised controlled studies (RCTs)/quasi‐RCTs examining any type of PA in reviews where majority of study participants were aged 65 years or older. Two reviewers conducted the search and analysis according to PRISMA and JBI guidelines. Results: Fifteen reviews involving 76 different primary studies (5404 participants) were included. The majority (3827; 71%) had prostate cancer. PA was associated with benefits across multiple physical outcomes (muscle mass, functional performance, strength), improved fatigue and health service outcomes. In contrast to younger adults, there was no improvement in anxiety and mixed findings for quality of life and depression. Conclusion: PA is associated with multiple benefits in older adults with cancer, with some differences compared to younger individuals which may reflect biological or behavioural determinants. Fatherhood and cancera commentary on the literature When a parent is diagnosed with cancer it may create a multitude of concerns and worries, which can be enormously challenging. Despite the increase in research pertaining to parental cancer, there is a paucity of knowledge addressing the impact of cancer on fathers. Fathers' roles are evolving, becoming increasingly diverse and multidimensional. This paper aims to uncover some issues that may be relevant for fathers with cancer. A cancer diagnosis may not solely impact on a man's identity but also on the lives of his children given the contemporary shift from patriarch to more diverse roles. Men and women may share commonalities when diagnosed with cancer but they also experience differences emphasising the need for gender-sensitive care. This paper highlights the significant role and function that fathers have in their children's lives. It is important that healthcare professionals are aware and pay attention to how gendered responses shape fathers' masculinity and consequently the cancer experience and parenting role. Furthermore this paper highlights the need to gather additional evidence on fathers' experiences when diagnosed and living with cancer. Introduction: Growing consensus describes it as "inappropriate" to deliver care to young people in either child or adult environments of care or in settings not equipped to meet their psychosocial needs. The aim of this review was to identify what patient and professional experience tells us about the culture of care specific to young people receiving cancer care in the UK. Methods: A narrative review of published, UK‐based research was conducted. Five online databases were searched using terms related to "culture of care," "cancer" and "adolescent." Papers were assessed for relevance, according to pre‐determined criteria: 19/1,366 identified papers met our inclusion criteria. Results: Studies included in this review were predominantly reflective of care received in specialist units. The findings were in support of "young people‐friendly," "tailored environments," showing how they facilitate young people to have positive experiences of care. Communication, information delivery and patient choice were themes that were central to the culture of care. Conclusion: Highlighted was the need to provide care beyond addressing clinical needs through a young person‐centred approach, to facilitate optimal experiences of care. However, to fully understand the culture of care, research needs to focus on the delivery of care outside of specialist units. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide, accounting for an estimated 1.1 million new cases diagnosed in 2012 (). Currently, there is a lack of specific guidance on supportive care for men with prostate cancer. This article describes a qualitative systematic review and synthesis examining men's experience of and need for supportive care. Seven databases were searched; 20 journal articles were identified and critically appraised. A thematic synthesis was conducted in which descriptive themes were drawn out of the data. These were peer support, support from partner, online support, cancer specialist nurse support, self-care, communication with health professionals, unmet needs (emotional support, information needs, support for treatment-induced side effects of incontinence and erectile dysfunction) and men's suggestions for improved delivery of supportive care. This was followed by the development of overarching analytic themes which were: uncertainty, reframing, and the timing of receiving treatment, information and support. Our results show that the most valued form of support men experienced following diagnosis was one-to-one peer support and support from partners. This review highlights the need for improved access to cancer specialist nurses throughout the care pathway, individually tailored supportive care and psychosexual support for treatment side effects. Introduction: Advance care planning (ACP) is increasingly regarded as the best way to optimise end‐of‐life (EOL) care. Studies have examined a multitude of factors impacting on the lagging uptake of ACP. In the current study, we specifically focused on patient factors related to the uptake of ACP in adult cancer patients. Methods: A scoping review was conducted, for which we searched the CINAHL, Cochrane, MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases (January 2013–December 2018). Studies exploring patient‐related factors influencing the uptake of ACP in cancer patients were eligible for inclusion. Results: Eleven papers and two overarching themes: person‐related (e.g. socio‐demographic) factors and "comprehension and awareness," were identified. White, well‐educated patients with a support network were more likely to be involved in ACP. However, there is limited comprehension and awareness among cancer patients regarding ACP. Conclusions: The identified themes warrant a tailored approach to ACP. With regard to person‐related factors, the existing body of knowledge on health literacy, disparities and shared decision‐making should be used when designing strategies to improve ACP uptake. Further, our findings regarding "comprehension and awareness" suggest that ACP should not be limited to a narrow process without acknowledging the complexity surrounding personalised cancer care near the EOL. (2011) European Journal of Cancer Care 20, 708-719 Employment and breast cancer: a meta-ethnography The purpose of this synthesis is to examine the qualitative evidence on the lived experience of breast cancer survivors in relation to return to work. An in-depth search of the literature was undertaken from 1999 until July 2010. Ten relevant papers emerged that reflected the aims of the synthesis. A meta-ethnographic approach was used to synthesise papers. Four concepts emerged that reflected the return to work, these included influencing factors, sickness absence, work ability and work-related problems and experiences of return to work. Further synthesis of concepts led to the development of four final interpretations. These included breast cancer and employment, treatment-induced physical impairment, employer comprehension of breast cancer and fear of work-related failure. These interpretations indicate that employers need to be educated on the work capabilities of cancer survivors post treatment. Improved support facilities are needed for cancer survivors which are supported by European employment legislation and guidance offered by company occupational health departments. Relatively little is known, however, about women's experiences of this condition in comparison with those diagnosed with primary breast cancer. This paper therefore reports findings from a secondary analysis of the published literature on the topic using tools from the critical appraisal skills programme to identify and analyse appropriate papers, and the constant comparative method as a means of identifying any overarching or dominant themes emerging from the literature. Uncertainty, lack of control and poor emotional functioning emerged as the main themes affecting women with metastatic breast cancer. These are discussed in relation to their antecedents in the original studies and their implications for nursing care. The themes demonstrate that living with metastatic (or secondary) breast cancer is a multifaceted experience that is influenced by a large number of factors, many of which are under-researched in comparison with those affecting women diagnosed with primary disease. Objective. This systematic review aimed to provide a critical summary of studies of physical activity (PA) and diet among racial/ethnic minority cancer survivors. Guided by the socio-ecological model, we identified factors across multiple levels—individual, family/social support, provider/team, and organization/local community/policy environment—that affect PA and diet among racial/ethnic minority survivors. Methods. We searched the Ovid MEDLINE, EBSCO CINAHL, Ovid PsycInfo, and PubMed databases. We extracted the behavior of focus (i.e., PA and diet), cancer type, race/ethnicity, and the level(s) of influence (and the corresponding factor(s)), and each eligible study investigated individual (e.g., demographic characteristics, psychological factors), family/social support, provider/team (e.g., healthcare provider recommendations), and organization/local community/policy environment (e.g., neighborhood/social environment). Results. Of 1,603 studies identified, 23 unique studies were eligible. Most studies included breast cancer survivors (n = 19) and Black survivors (n = 13). Seventeen studies assessed associations between PA and factors at the level of the individual (16 studies), family/social support (two studies), provider/team (one study), or organization/local community/policy environment (four studies). Eleven studies assessed associations between diet and factors at the level of the individual (11 studies), family/social support (two studies), provider/team (one study), or organization/local community/policy environment (two studies). Only five studies simultaneously investigated factors across multiple levels. Most demographic and cancer-related factors were not associated with PA or diet. Overall, factors from social-cognitive theories (e.g., self-efficacy) were positively associated with PA. Less consensus was found regarding diet because fewer studies existed, and they also investigated a diverse range of eating behaviors. Conclusions. There is a critical need for studies of PA and diet that investigate multiple levels of influence particularly for Asian American survivors, male survivors, and cancers other than breast cancer. Social-cognitive theories may help guide the designing of multilevel PA interventions for racial/ethnic minority survivors. Individuals managing the challenges of life‐limiting illness require adequate social support to maintain quality of life. Qualitative research reports that patients value highly the social support obtained in palliative care interventions such as day care and group therapies. This systematic review aims to summarise existing quantitative evidence on palliative care interventions that facilitate social support. Research literature was systematically searched using electronic databases and key journals. Searches returned a total of 6,247 unique titles of which sixteen were eligible for inclusion. Interventions include group therapies, group practical interventions and palliative day care. Outcome measures and study designs were heterogeneous. Only one study used a validated outcome measure of social support. Benefits were influenced by participant characteristics such as baseline distress. Partial economic evaluation was attempted by two studies. Methodological challenges include attrition and use of outcome measures that were insensitive to change. Statistically significant results were reported in psychological and physical domains. Evidence is limited due to methodological issues and a scarcity of quantitative research, particularly regarding long‐term benefits and cost‐effectiveness. Relevant, comprehensive and psychometrically rigorous needs assessment tools are needed to ensure appropriate care is delivered to cancer survivors who have completed treatment. The aim of this rapid review was to identify and describe needs assessment tools that are used in cancer survivors post‐treatment, assess their psychometric properties and describe their use in clinical care. The electronic databases Medline, Cochrane Library, CINAHL and PsycINFO were searched. Six studies were identified that described five needs assessment tools used in cancer survivors post‐treatment. None of these tools covered all domains of unmet need nor demonstrated adequate evidence of all recommended criteria of validity and reliability. Few had been evaluated for use in a clinical environment. Out of the five tools, the Survivor Unmet Needs Survey (SUNS) showed the strongest psychometric properties. There is little empirical evidence available to guide recommendations on the most appropriate process of conducting needs assessment with cancer survivors once they have completed treatment. Introduction. Ambulatory Care (AC), where patients receive inpatient cancer treatment on an outpatient basis, was introduced into the United Kingdom (UK) National Health Service (NHS) in 2004. Although now well established within some services, the development of AC across the NHS is yet to be described. We report findings of a scoping review that set out to understand the provenance of the clinical pathway, whilst exploring drivers for the development of AC in the UK. Methods. Using scoping review methods, database citation, and grey literature, searches were undertaken to map the storyline of AC's development internationally. The Joanna Briggs Institute guidance was followed; this included consultation with six professionals considered critical to the development of AC. Results. From the 57 records identified between 1979 and 2022, four domains were identified through a narrative synthesis that reflected the following drivers for AC: financial; optimisation of bed capacity; advances in technology and supportive care; and professional motivation to improve patient experience. Conclusion. We report the first descriptive analysis of the international development of AC, locating the UK cancer service within its commissioning, operational, and philosophical foundations. Objective. (1) Examine QoL of caregivers of patients with brain tumours compared to population norms and other cancer caregiver groups, (2) appraise the content of quantitative QoL outcome measures utilised, and (3) assess to what extent QoL measures used in research align with caregivers' priorities. Methods. Systematic literature search of studies including caregivers of brain tumour patients using self-completed assessments of QoL. Extracted data from included studies included quantitative QoL outcome data, QoL outcome measures utilised, and the included QoL domains. The impact of brain tumour patient caregiving was assessed by summarising included data comparing brain tumour caregivers to other cancer caregivers and normative population data. QoL measures utilised by the studies and their domains were extracted, coded, and analysed by themes. The rates of investigation by theme were then compared to existing data on caregiver-own preference in relation to QoL. Results. 49 studies, including 57 outcome measures, incorporating a combined 124 QoL domains. Brain tumour caregivers reported lower QoL outcomes than population norms but similar to other cancer caregiver groups. Thematic analysis of QoL domains generated 7 themes: caregiving burden and adaptation, existential and self, family and social support, finances, information needs, physical symptoms and functioning, and psychological symptoms and wellbeing. The most investigated themes were physical and psychological symptoms, the most important for caregivers themselves were family and social support. Conclusions. Caregiving for brain tumour patients is shown to negatively affect QoL, particularly mental health, burden, and social life. Existing QoL research in caregivers of brain tumour patients predominantly utilises generic QoL measures designed for use in patients and draws a medicalised view of QoL priorities. Introduction: Recent reproductive technology for cancer patients has provided multiple options to preserve their fertility. Preserving fertility can increase quality of life of cancer patients. However, medical service providers and patients face difficulties in the decision‐making process for the fertility preserving treatment because studies focusing on the concept of decision‐making and various intervention materials are lack. This review aims to identify the attributes of interventions of studies on decision‐making support interventions in cancer patients considering fertility preservation and provide best evidence for health professionals. Methods: PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL and DBpia databases were searched. An integrated review of the literature was conducted using Whittemore and Knafl's methodology. Results: The search identified 1008 articles, of which 11 studies met eligible criteria. The attributes of the interventions were (1) provision of detailed and practical information of fertility preservation, (2) nondirective approaches to help patients to value their judgements, (3) emphasis on interactions through individualised consultations, (4) establishing connections with available resources and (5) reinforcement of decision‐making support resources. Conclusion: Health professionals must acquire current knowledge and ethical and legal standards of fertility preservation and pass this information on to patients before the formation of fertility preservation decision‐making support networks within the hospital and health systems. Introduction: The objective of this review is to synthesise and present the best available evidence on the prevalence, predictors and information needs about sexual health among female Arab cancer survivors. Methods: The databases searched included MEDLINE, Embase and CINAHL from inception of the database until March 2020. The review was undertaken according to the JBI guidelines. Proportional meta‐analysis using a random effects model was used for statistical pooling through JBI SUMARI. Results: Seven studies involving female Arab cancer survivors were included in the review. The overall prevalence of sexual dysfunction ranged from 16.7 to 67% (pooled estimate 51%, 95% CIs 21.7% to 80.2%). Dyspareunia and erectile dysfunction were the two main types of sexual dysfunction reported after diagnosis, and the overall prevalence ranged from 42.5% to 65% and 38% to 61%, respectively. The prevalence of vaginal dryness was ranged from 19.8% to 54.2%, and dyspareunia ranged from 22.2% to 65%. The lack of sexuality information and communication with health care providers (HCPs) was also reported in the included studies. Conclusion: Cancer and its treatment may result in significant difficulties with sexual activity and sexual functioning among cancer survivor. Management of cytotoxic drug extravasation remains contentious, with differing views on the most effective management strategy. With the increasing drive to provide effective, evidence-based healthcare, while ensuring the patient experience of the treatment provided plays a significant part in the development of clinical practice guidelines, the purpose of this literature review was to both critically analyse the quality of evidence that underpins contemporary practice and to determine if the patient experience is taken into account. A literature search was undertaken sourcing publications from the 1960s to July 2014 identifying all studies detailing strategies aimed at preventing the need for surgical debridement and all studies evaluating extravasation management from the patient's perspective. No conclusive evidence was found to suggest one clinical strategy as more effective than the other. No studies were identified that evaluated outcome from the patient's perspective. It is therefore suggested that outcomes-based research should underpin contemporary extravasation management guidelines to determine what the final outcome or 'end result' is and how this impacts on the patient and that the current lack of research into the patient experience of extravasation management is an area that needs to be addressed. Cancer survivors may experience unmet needs beyond the end of their treatment. This paper aimed to explore the prevalence and most frequently found unmet needs and to identify factors associated with higher levels of total unmet needs and with each domain separately. Five databases were searched using the keywords neoplasms, survivors, needs assessment, health services' needs and demands. The results were presented based on the strength of the evidence (strong, moderate and weak association) and the categorisation of the pooled prevalence of at least one unmet need (high, moderate, low). Twenty‐six studies were included in the review. A higher prevalence of at least one reported unmet need was observed in survivors with less time since treatment and in women with breast cancer. The most frequently reported unmet needs were fear of cancer recurrence and requesting up to date information. Strong evidence was found for an association between a higher number of unmet needs and younger age, higher anxiety and poorer quality of life. Future studies on unmet needs should report how unmet needs are associated with each domain separately. Low health literacy has been associated with poor cancer screening uptake, difficulty in making treatment choices and reduced quality of life following a cancer diagnosis, yet it is unclear whether and how health literacy influences the pathway to diagnosis for patients with cancer symptoms. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the influence of health literacy on the timely diagnosis of symptomatic cancer. Literature was searched between January 1990 and May 2017 using MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, ASSIA, CINAHL and PsycINFO. Only three papers met the inclusion criteria. These reported two qualitative studies and one quantitative, with adult patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal (colon, rectum and pancreas), cervical and breast cancer. The definition and assessment of health literacy varied between the studies, as did the descriptions of the pathway to diagnosis. Due to the methodological weaknesses identified, the conclusions are limited; however, the studies did highlight important considerations in the definition and measurement of health literacy. Further research is required that clearly defines health literacy and follows the principles of the Aarhus Statement to assess the influence of health literacy on the pathway to cancer diagnosis. Introduction: The end of active treatment is a stressful period for adolescents and young adults (AYA), but little is known about AYA experiences at this time point. The aim was to describe the issues young people experienced and identify interventions to support AYA at the end of treatment. Methods: We conducted a rapid review of published primary research to identify what is currently known about AYA experiences of the end of treatment, the issues which arise and existing interventions to support AYA at this time. Results: Searches identified 540 papers of which 16 met the inclusion criteria. Five main themes were identified: physical/medical issues; psychological, social and emotional issues; information and support needs; sources of information and support; and difficulties accessing information and support. Within these broader themes, several subthemes were identified and explored further. Conclusion: Adolescents and young adults are under prepared for the unpredictable and ongoing nature of the physical, psychological and social issues they face at the end of cancer treatment. Enabling young people's inclusion within their relevant social and educational peer networks should be a priority. Introduction: In palliative care, the prevention and relief of fatigue are regarded as crucial goals in patients with cancer. Methods: A systematic review was carried out according to the COnsensus‐based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments methodology. Searches were conducted in Medline (through PubMed), Web of Science, Open Gray, Scielo, Cochrane, CINAHL and EMBASE. All instruments found in each study were assessed using the COnsensus‐based Standards for the selection of health status Measurement INstruments checklist and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. Results: A total of 5598 articles were identified in the different databases. In total, 57 studies describing 19 instruments were included in this study. The main properties evaluated were internal consistency, cross‐cultural validity, hypotheses testing and responsiveness. All studies were evaluated with the Strobe scale with a score greater than 6 points. Conclusions: According to the quality methodological results, Edmonton Symptom Assessment System, Problems and Needs in Palliative Care Questionnaire, European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life 15‐item Questionnaire for Palliative Care and Palliative Care Quality of Life Instrument are the recommended instruments used for assessing cancer‐related fatigue in palliative care. Objective: This study aimed to assess the prognostic role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in osteosarcoma. Methods: Systematic searches of PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science were conducted. The correlation between VEGF expression and patients' survival was our primary endpoint. The secondary endpoints were the associations between VEGF level and patients' sociodemographic and pathological characteristics. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) or odd ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained to assess the associations between VEGF expression and the target factors. Subgroup and meta‐regression analyses were conducted to explore potential factors that associated with VEGF efficacy. Results: The combined HR suggested that a positive VEGF status has a negative impact on overall survival (OS) (HR = 2.58; 95% CI, 2.09–3.19; P < 0.0001) and disease‐free survival (DFS) (HR = 2.54; 95% CI, 1.84–3.50; P < 0.0001) in patients with osteosarcoma. Meta‐regression analysis ruled out the influence of cut‐off value, disease stage, histological subtype, disease grade, tumour location, geographic area, publication year, and method of HR acquisition on heterogeneity. Results showed that VEGF expression was closely correlated with tumour staging, chemotherapy response, and metastasis. Conclusion: Based on the study results, VEGF could serve as an effective biomarker of prognosis in patients with osteosarcoma. Introduction: Women diagnosed with breast cancer are receiving mastectomy with implant‐based reconstruction at an increasing rate. Chronic post‐surgical pain can be a major concern for these patients. This review sought to address the knowledge gap on the prevalence, severity and characteristics of chronic pain in this population. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework. Five databases were searched using keywords. Two independent reviewers performed selection and data extraction of studies that met inclusion criteria. Results: Seventeen studies were included in this review. Ten studies reported prevalence of chronic pain which ranged from 7.3%–90.9% with pooled prevalence of 26.3%. Nine studies reported severity of chronic pain using various scales and methodology; most patients' pain was not severe. Risk factors for chronic pain included axillary dissection, lack of perioperative local anaesthetic, younger age and use of a tissue expander. No studies reported on possible correlation between ethnicity and pain. Eleven different assessment tools were used to measure pain. Conclusion: Chronic pain following post‐mastectomy implant‐based breast reconstruction is prevalent, associated with specific risk factors and poorly characterised. Introduction: This study aimed to summarise research findings on dysphagia prehabilitation initiated before chemoradiation therapy (C)RT in head and neck cancer (HNC) including its impact on three swallow‐related outcomes at distinct time points. Methods: A comprehensive search was completed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and CINAHL. Inclusion criteria were studies of adults with HNC with an exercise‐based prehabilitation programme beginning before (C)RT. Methodological quality was rated using the Downs and Black checklist. The Template for Intervention Descriptions and Replication (TIDieR) checklist was used to evaluate how well studies were reported. Results: Eight studies (three randomised control trials) involving 295 adults with HNC were included. The largest participant group (63%) were Stage III/IV head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Prehabilitation was completed independently at home (100%) and typically began 2 weeks before CRT (75%). Studies evaluated the impact of dysphagia prehabilitation across functional (n = 6), quality of life (n = 5) and physiological (n = 4) domains. Prehabilitation significantly altered physiological (25%), functional (66%) and quality of life (50%) outcomes. Fifty per cent of studies included long‐term (>1 year) outcomes. Quality of included studies ranged from poor (25%) to good (38%). Six (75%) studies reported sufficient details of exercise programmes. Conclusion: Limited evidence supports exercise‐based dysphagia prehabilitation before (C)RT to improve swallow‐related outcomes, and long‐term benefits remain unclear. Background: Aquatic therapeutic exercise can be equally effective or even superior to land‐based exercise in improving several clinical variables. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the effects compared to land‐based interventions particularly in breast cancer (BC) patients. Objective: The objective of this study is to examine the effects of aquatic therapeutic exercise on pain, shoulder mobility, lymphedema, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, body composition, pulmonary function, cancer‐related fatigue (CRF) and health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) and which parameters are effective compared to similar land‐based interventions. Methods: The databases used were PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and CINAHL, retrieving 145 articles. Results: Eleven studies were included. Aquatic therapeutic exercise is feasible, safe, well tolerated and achieved high percentages of adherence. As for the assessed outcomes, moderate to large improvements were found compared to usual care or to land‐based physical exercise interventions in pain, shoulder range of motion, pulmonary function, HRQoL, cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength. Inconclusive results were found for lymphedema, body composition and CRF. Conclusions: Aquatic therapeutic exercise interventions using a combination of endurance, strength, mobility, stretching and breathing exercises resulted in improvements in common side effects of BC and its treatments. More studies on CRF, body composition and lymphedema need to be done to further evaluate the impact of the intervention on these outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The aim of this review was to systematically examine the evidence on the relationship between quality of life (QoL) and unmet supportive care needs in patients with lung cancer. Methods: Six databases were searched for studies published since 2007. Studies were included if they measured QoL using a standardised tool and examined its association with unmet supportive care needs in lung cancer patients. Results: Six studies involving 562 patients were included. Nearly two thirds of the patients had been diagnosed with advanced cancer (Stage III or IV), and the majority had been diagnosed for less than 2 years. There was a negative association between QoL and unmet needs using two different measures (Supportive Care Needs Survey[SCNS] and Cancer Survivors Unmet Needs Survey [CaSUN]). In two studies, the relationship was limited to physical and/or psychological domains. Conclusions: Unmet supportive care needs are associated with poorer QoL for people with lung cancer: The findings suggest that unmet physical and psychological needs may have the most impact on QoL and reflect the high symptom burden and psychological distress associated with lung cancer. Background: Cancer can have various psychosocial effects on children and young adults. Technology‐based psychosocial interventions are increasingly popular in paediatric oncology for psychosocial health. Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of technology‐based psychosocial interventions applied to children, adolescent and young adults undergoing cancer treatment. Methods: Eight electronic databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library (including Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials [CENTRAL]), CINAHL Plus with Full Text, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, ProQuest, Science Direct and Scopus were searched to identify eligible randomised controlled trials from 1 January 2010 up to 9 April 2021. Search results were limited to 'children, adolescent and young adults' 6–24 years undergoing cancer treatment. Randomised controlled studies in which technology‐based psychosocial interventions were applied were examined. Of 4,927 articles, 12 articles met the inclusion criteria. Hedges' g effect size was computed for each study. Effect sizes and moderator variables were tested using random‐effects models. This study is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42020177787. Results: The outcomes were anger, anxiety, coping, depression, distress, quality of life and resilience. Compared with standard care, technology‐based psychosocial interventions had a large effect and significantly on anger (g = −1.327, 95% CI: [−2.43, 0.22], anxiety (g = −0.89, 95%CI: [−1.34, −0.18], and depression (g = −1.05, 95% CI: [−1.65,−0.46]. Also, it was found that the duration of interventions had a significant moderator and effect size of the distress and resilience outcomes increased as the duration increased. Conclusion: This meta‐analysis demonstrated that technology‐based psychosocial interventions served as an effective intervention as it appears to have implications reducing anger, anxiety and depression in paediatric oncology. Nevertheless, randomised controlled studies with larger samples still needed to establish evidence‐based psycho‐oncological interventions for paediatric oncology. Women with breast cancer may experience many symptoms resulting from the primary disease and/or treatment of the disease. It is very important the overall symptom experience from the patients' perspective is captured and understood by health professionals. The question developed was 'What is the symptom experience of women with breast cancer from time of diagnosis to completion of treatment'. The meta-synthesis process as developed by Sandelowski and Barroso was used to collect and analyse the data. The overarching idea emerging from this meta-synthesis is that the symptoms experience for women with breast cancer has effects on the very 'self' of the individual. Emerging is women's need to consider the existential issues that they face while simultaneously dealing with a multitude of physical and psychological symptoms. This meta-synthesis develops a new, integrated, and more complete interpretation of findings on the symptom experience of women with breast cancer. (2011) European Journal of Cancer Care, 33-43 The purpose of this paper is to undertake a review of the everyday lives and the need for support felt by relatives of adults with malignant cerebral glioma. Through electronic literature searches we identified studies with qualitative, quantitative or mixed method designs. Fourteen studies were identified. They indicated that a relative often assumes the caregiver's role, taking over responsibility for the patient's illness and survival, and that the relative is often overwhelmingly exhausted by this task. The ever-changing circumstances left the relatives fearful, anxious and apprehensive. The relatives lacked information about how to provide day-to-day care and how to manage psychoses and neuropsychiatric problems at home. Likewise, they needed help from the professionals to talk with each other about potentially reduced life expectancy. Most relatives appeared to value specialist nurse support highly, and they found support groups helpful. Relatively few studies were identified, and extant research was found to be diverse in purpose, study design and study population. The majority of the studies focused only on the parts of the relatives' everyday lives in which they were taking care of and supporting the patient. Objective Sex and intimacy are basic needs and important aspects of quality of life among humans. This focus of this review was to synthesise and present the best available qualitative evidence on the sexual life experiences and needs of Chinese adults living with cancer. Moreover, the first‐hand experience, meaning and perspective about the sexual life changes and support needs during the survival and extended treatment period were synthesised in this study. Methods: A systematic review of qualitative studies was undertaken using the Joanna Briggs Institute System for the Unified Management, Assessment and Review of Information (JBI‐SUMARI). A comprehensive search of five databases: CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar were undertaken from 2010 until February 2020 using defined criteria. Methodological quality and data extraction were undertaken using JBI‐SUMARI. Results: Eight studies were included in the review. A total of 39 findings were extracted and aggregated into eight categories based on similarity of meaning. Three synthesised themes were generated: (i) misconceptions and lack of education or information regarding sexual activity exists for patients with cancer, (ii) concerns for overall health and well‐being as well as physical and psychological changes can alter sexual desire and behaviours in patients with cancer and (iii) lack of sexual activity and intimacy can create relationship problems. Conclusions: Sexual relationships are intimate, personal and private in Chinese culture and beliefs. Chinese adults living with cancer report many neglected issues on sexual well‐being in various domains. Adequate and consistent education about sexual intimacy issues from health care providers was identified as an important need. Unaddressed needs might affect adults' coping strategies in managing their sexual relations during various stages of cancer treatment and beyond. It must be noted that there are many Chinese ethnic minorities living with cancer outside the Greater China region. The evidence provides valuable recommendations to health care providers globally to consider the specific sexual needs and initiate culturally sensitive sexuality education and care support for Chinese adults living with cancer. Objective: Patients with rare cancers may experience different unmet needs than those with common cancer. The objective of this systematic review was to (1) investigate unmet supportive care needs of rare cancer patients throughout the disease trajectory and (2) identify predictive factors for these unmet needs. Methods: PubMed, PsycINFO and CINAHL were searched for publications (January 2011 to March 2021) focusing on unmet needs of patients with rare cancer. Two reviewers independently selected studies, extracted data and performed quality assessment. Findings were synthesised. Results: The search yielded 4,598 articles, of which 59 articles met eligibility criteria and 57 were of medium or high quality. Rare cancer patients most frequently reported unmet needs in the healthcare system and information domain (up to 95%), followed by the psychological domain (up to 93%) and the physical and daily living domain (up to 80%). Unmet needs were mainly reported in the posttreatment phase. The most frequently identified predictors were higher anxiety, younger age and higher neuroticism. Conclusion: Patients with rare cancer have unmet needs throughout their disease trajectory. Supportive care needs of rare cancer patients should be addressed individually, depending on the rare cancer subdomain and phase of disease and from diagnosis onwards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Despite palliative care being offered to paediatric cancer patients, it has limited utilisation and often excludes parental support. Therefore, this review aims to consolidate evidence regarding experiences and needs of parents of end‐of‐life palliative paediatric oncology patients. Methods: Six electronic databases were searched as follows: CINAHL, The Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Scopus and PsycINFO. Included studies were appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme Checklist. They were then analysed using a two‐step approach comprising firstly meta‐summaries followed by meta‐synthesis for generating fresh insights to the topic. Results: Thirteen studies were included. Three themes emerged as follows: (1) normalising the pain; (2) failure as a parent; and (3) importance of communication and social support. Parental experiences included moving on despite the pain and harbouring hopes for their children. However, parents felt immense guilt and a sense of failure in carrying out their parental roles. Effective communication with healthcare providers, availability of family support and religion were necessary to help them cope. Conclusions: Given the emotional challenges faced by parents, healthcare policies and practices should be revised to include parental support in paediatric palliative care services. Future healthcare communication trainings should consider parental need for sensitivity in communication, empathy and kindness from healthcare professionals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This scoping review aims at exploring the effectiveness of nurse‐led advanced practice for patients with cancer. Methods: This review followed the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews. Randomised controlled trials on cancer nurse‐led clinics for patient outcomes, costs, service utilisation and other outcomes were included. Databases such as MEDLINE, CENTRAL, CINAHL, EMBASE and PsychINFO were searched based on MeSH terms. Thematic analysis was used to synthesise results of the included studies. Results: Seventeen articles were included, published between 2001 and 2019. There were methodological shortcomings with a number of the studies reviewed. Five themes were identified including (1) rationale for developing nurse‐led clinics, (2) mode of delivery of nurse‐led clinics, (3) the content of nurse‐led clinics, (4) exploring patient outcomes and (5) satisfaction with nurse‐led clinics. Conclusions: The results support the effectiveness of nurse‐led clinics in improving self‐reported responses such as distress levels, satisfaction, quality of life, depressive symptoms, concerns and vomiting among cancer patients. Following a sound protocol for both the study and the reporting is recommended, and future studies should focus more on costs and effectiveness of different models of care administered by advanced practice nurses. Effectiveness of nurse‐led clinics needs further evaluation with stronger trials and wider focus on nursing‐sensitive clinical outcomes and costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Patients with haematological malignancies may not be receiving appropriate referrals to palliative care and continuing to have treatments in the end stages of their disease. This systematic review of qualitative research aimed to synthesise healthcare professionals' (HCPs) views and experiences of palliative care for adult patients with a haematologic malignancy. Methods: A systematic search strategy was undertaken across eight databases. Thomas and Harden's approach to thematic analysis guided synthesis on the seventeen included studies. GRADE‐GRADEQual guided assessment of confidence in the synthesised findings. Results: Three analytic themes were identified: (a) "Maybe we can pull another 'rabbit out of the hat'," represents doctors' therapeutic optimism, (b) "To tell or not to tell?" explores doctors' decision‐making around introducing palliative care, and (c) "Hospice, home or hospital?" describes HCPs concerns about challenges faced by haematology patients at end of life in terms of transfusion support and risk of catastrophic bleeds. Conclusion: Haematologists value the importance of integrated palliative care but prefer the term "supportive care." Early integration of supportive care alongside active curative treatment should be the model of choice in haematology settings in order to achieve the best outcomes and improved quality of life. Objective: This systematic review aimed to identify the most relevant problems related to malnutrition in adult patients undergoing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and to identify non‐pharmacological interventions to treat these problems. Methods: A systematic search for each research question was performed in MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Google Scholar and reference lists in the period 2009–2019. Results: Six and nine studies were included respectively. Quantitative pooling of data was not possible due to the heterogeneity of the studies. Oral mucositis (OM), nausea/vomiting, diarrhoea and dysgeusia were the most frequently reported nutritional problems. Cryotherapy and laser therapy seem to be effective in the prevention and treatment of OM. Recommendations for or against the use of mouth rinses and light therapy in the treatment of OM cannot be made, as too few studies have been conducted in this area. The evidence for non‐pharmacological treatment options in the case of nausea/vomiting and diarrhoea is rather limited. No study was identified with regard to treatment of dysgeusia. Conclusion: Nutrition in HSCT patients has not yet been studied to a satisfactory extent. There is an urgent need for high‐quality studies to be conducted in this area to optimise the care of patients undergoing haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This study aimed to review diet and nutrition information and support needs of cancer patients who receive pelvic radiotherapy to inform the development of interventions to improve this area of care. Methods: The systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines. Six electronic databases were searched for peer‐reviewed studies of any design that assessed diet and nutrition needs after a pelvic cancer diagnosis. Narrative synthesis was used to integrate findings. Results: Thirty studies (12 quantitative, 15 qualitative, 3 mixed‐methods) were included. Four themes, "content of dietary information"; "sources of information"; "sustaining dietary change"; and "views on the role of diet post‐treatment," summarised evidence about provision of nutritional guidance following diagnosis, but also contrasting views about the role of diet post‐diagnosis. Qualitative studies contributed considerably more to the synthesis, compared to quantitative studies. Included studies were of moderate to good quality; selection bias in quantitative studies and poor evidence of credibility and dependability in qualitative studies were highlighted. Conclusion: There is some evidence of lack of nutrition support in pelvic cancer survivors, but methodological limitations of included studies may have had an impact on the findings. Future, prospective studies that focus on diet and nutrition needs post‐diagnosis are warranted to improve care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
