With schools and universities closing across Europe, the COVID-19 lockdown left actors in the field of education battling with the unprecedented challenge of finding a meaningful way to keep the wheels of education turning online. The sudden need for digital solutions across the field of education resulted in the emergence of a variety of digital networks and collaborative online platforms. In this joint article from scholars around Europe, we explore the COVID-19 lockdowns of physical education across the European region, and the different processes of emergency digitalization that followed in their wake. Spanning perspectives from Italy, Germany, Belgium, and the Nordic countries, the article's five cases provide a glimpse of how these processes have at the same time accelerated and consolidated the involvement of various commercial and non-commercial actors in public education infrastructures. By gathering documentation, registering dynamics, and making intimations of the crisis as it unfolded, the aim of the joint paper is to provide an opportunity for considering the implications of these accelerations and consolidations for the heterogeneous futures of European education.

Accounts focusing on the relation between conceptualisations of parenthood and neuroDiscourse are missing within educational philosophy. This lacuna forms the background of this paper, which reports on a case study on the level of social policy documents addressing parents of the Flemish governmental branch office Kind & Gezin (Child & Family). The case's focus is a critical analysis of discursive constructions of parenthood, and the extent to which results of neuroscience, as they appear in the documents, exert a change in these discursive constructions of good parenthood. The study deploys critical metaphor analysis to explore the conceptualisations of parenthood that are metaphorically constructed, what these constructions convey about good parenthood, and how they relate to neuroDiscourse. The analysis, firstly, points at neuroDiscourse of parenthood being operational in the documents, but operating in a different manner than that described in the literature. Nevertheless, neuroDiscourse of parenthood exerts a narrowing effect on the way parenthood is conceptualised in parenthood Discourse. Secondly, the analysis exposes the assumption that parenthood advice is best grounded in scientific evidence, facilitating the further occurrence of parenting advice based on neuroscience. Thirdly, in relating Kind & Gezin's mission of optimal preventive family support to neuroDiscourse of parenthood, the possibility of neuro-governance of parents arises.

The last decade the development of (international) educational indicators has been extending in many ways: the number of countries involved, the aspects covered, the impact on educational policy, their attention in the media. More recent is the attention that is given to the feedback of indicators to individual schools. More and more stakeholders of the educational indicators (policy makers, researchers, school leaders and teachers) become convinced of the fact that a better use of the indicators could lead to powerful opportunities for individual schools to analyse and improve their educational quality. A very important role in this respect is reserved for models that provide individual schools with feedback. This implies that the feedback of indicators is one of the aspects to be considered in order to enhance the impact of indicators. This paper contains three parts. It starts with investigating whether there is a need for providing educational indicators and benchmarks to individual schools. Then it presents two Flemish case studies that actually equip schools with individual feedback of indicators. Based on the needs for feedback and the experiences in both the case studies the authors create a model for feedback. This is the third part of the paper that presents some general and technical aspects that the feedback of educational indicators should comply to. The paper ends with some general conclusions. In this paper, we explore the improvisations made in examination practices in higher education during the pandemic of 2020. Drawing on STS, we start from the theoretical assumption that examinations constitute an obligatory passage point in universities and colleges: a sacred point which students need to pass if they want to gain recognized qualifications. We base our analysis of higher education examinations on cases from six countries around the world: Australia, Belgium, Chile, India, Sweden and the UK. We use the analytical heuristic of choreography to follow the movements, tensions and resistance of the 'emergency examinations' as well as the re-orderings of actors and stages that have inevitably occurred. In our analytical stories we see the interplay between the maintenance of fixed and sacred aspects of examinations and the fluidity of improvisations aimed at meeting threats of spreading COVID-19. These measures have forced the complex network of examinations both to reinforce some conventional actors and to assemble new actors and stages, thus creating radically new choreographies. Although higher education teaching and didactics are being framed as a playground for pedagogical innovation with digital technologies, it is clear from our data that not all educational activities can be so easily replicated.

The purpose of this paper, which is part of a three-year EU Erasmus+-funded study titled 'Distributed Evaluation and Planning in Schools' (DEAPS), is to provide an analysis of policies, structures, processes, supports and barriers that exist to enable or inhibit the involvement of students and parents in school evaluation in four European countries (Belgium, Ireland, Portugal and Turkey). Document analysis was used for this study and some 348 peer-reviewed articles, and 28 national and transnational policy documents were included in the analysis. Based on this review it would be reasonable to suggest that the student/parent voice agenda around evaluation in schools remains, by and large, aspirational. It is extolled in policy but in practice is mainly tokenistic with very little evidence of impact on the work of schools. In light of this, it is argued that government and school-level policies and strategies need to be reconsidered to enhance students' and parents' engagement in school evaluation. As a first step, significant further empirical research on the limitations on and conditions necessary for stakeholder voice in education is required.

This paper presents the main findings of an action-research study that took place in seven European countries in order to develop effective educational responses to prevent and combat discrimination. The study entailed the design of media and citizenship education activities, their implementation in the different educational contexts and the evaluation of their effectiveness in raising young people's awareness of discrimination. The results of the study shed light both on the advantages and constraints of educational practice, variations that often depend on the specific cultural and social context. On the one hand, the analysis and the evaluation of educational experiences suggest that critical media literacy can enable the development of critical reading/viewing skills as well as acts of participatory and inclusive citizenship that question derogative and essentialist media representations of the Other. On the other hand, the results highlight the difficulty of promoting young people's awareness of discrimination through active methods of teaching and learning or through media content which is far from young people's experience, interests and concerns.

This article presents seven reports on the interviews about reception and use of international indicators among respondents from Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain and United Kingdom. The first report is based on interviews with 5 respondents occupied with different aspects of the macro level of the Flemish educational system. It focuses on the content of the interviews and is structured upon seven headlines referring to the BEQUAD interview schedule. The second report is based on six interviews with respondents placed at different levels of the Danish educational system. This report is written on the basis of the interviews and the structure of the report is built upon seven headlines referring to the guideline of interview headings including a summary and a conclusion. The third is based on six interviews conducted during the months of May and June, 2002, with a union representative with the SNES (secondary education teachers) (A), the Director of School Education (B), a Counsellor at the "Cour des Comptes" and Chairman of the Higher Council for School Assessment (C), a counsellor and Director of Programming and Development (D), a Senator (E) and a Deputy Director of Higher Education (F). Most of the interviewees expressed their views on the best-known publications by the OECD and French education system. All interviews give emphasis on the use of indicators to serve specific ends. The fourth is based on interviews with 6 people engaged in key positions in the Italian Educational system. The fifth is based on interviews with six people occupying different key positions in the Dutch educational system. The report summarises the content of the interviews and is based on the seven headings of the BEQUAD interview schedule. Next is a report based on interviews with 6 people occupying key positions in the Spanish educational scene. The interviews aimed at getting relevant information about their perceptions on the possible influences of international indicators to decision-making processes and public information. The last report is based on interviews with three groups of respondents in the UK. The report summarises the content of the interviews and the Department of Education and Skills (DFES) written response and is structured using the seven section headings of the BEQUAD interview schedule. This article presents two reports on the interviews with school principals in Belgium and France. The first report presents the results of interviews with 5 Flemish secondary school leaders. The purpose of the investigation was to gain an explorative insight of their use of and their remarks on the recent initiated systems to provide schools with individual feedback as a result of the gathering of international educational indicators. In an interview, the personal views of principals were questioned. The focus of the interviews was the feedback provided to schools after their participation in the international comparative TIMSS-R and PISA studies. The second is a report on interviews with three principals in France who expressed their view mostly on national indicators which they often use in their daily practice. Of the three heads of establishment interviewed, two had never used any international indicators and had little knowledge of them, apart from what they had read in the press. One was better acquainted with them as he had participated in drawing up an international questionnaire on educational establishments. They are interested in the indicators that the French ministry constructs and disseminates (like social status of pupils, pass-rate...) which can be applied to their schools. (Contains 3 footnotes.)
