This article introduces a uniform theory of diffraction–physical optics (UTD–PO) formulation for analyzing radiowave multiple diffraction emanating from trees and buildings in green urban areas, considering illumination from a low transmitter and assuming spherical-wave incidence. Based on Babinet's principle, this solution models buildings as rectangular sections and accounts for the influence of tree crowns (assuming these rise above the average rooftop height) by incorporating appropriate attenuation factors/phasors into the diffraction phenomena of buildings. The validation of the formulation is achieved through measurements made at the 39 GHz 6G mmWave frequency on a scale model of a green urban environment comprising bonsai trees and bricks. The main advantage of the proposed solution is that the calculations only include single diffractions due to recursion, circumventing the need to use higher-order diffraction terms in the diffraction coefficients, thus reducing the computation time and power. Our results may be beneficial for the design of mobile communication systems, including 6G networks, situated in green urban areas and with transmission source positioned lower than the surrounding infrastructure. The term Block Turbo Code typically refers to the iterative decoding of a serially concatenated two-dimensional systematic block code. This paper introduces a Vector Turbo Code that is irregular but with code rates comparable to those of a Block Turbo Code (BTC) when the Bahl Cocke Jelinek Raviv algorithm is used. In BTC's, the horizontal (or vertical) blocks are encoded first and the vertical (or horizontal) blocks second. The irregular Vector Turbo Code (iVTC) uses information bits that participate in varying numbers of trellis sections, which are organized into blocks that are encoded horizontally (or vertical) without vertical (or horizontal) encoding. The decoding requires only one soft-input soft-output decoder. In general, a reduction in complexity, in comparison to a BTC was achieved for the same very low probability of bit error ( 10 - 5 ). Performance in the AWGN channel shows that iVTC is capable of achieving a significant coding gain of 1.28dB for a 64QAM modulation scheme, at a bit error rate of 10 - 5 over its corresponding BTC. It is predicted that the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in communication systems will be more extensive in future generations of wireless telecommunication networks, due to their facilitating advantages. In this paper, a UAV-based wireless communication system is considered in which a UAV is employed as a relay to connect two ground users. These two disconnected users make a communication pair. Our aim is to maximize the minimum achievable information rate for the communication link between the transmitter and receiver, by cooperatively optimizing UAV trajectory and transmitter and source power allocation. Motivated by the above, we formulate the optimization problem. The solving process is complicated because of the non-convexity of the formulated problem. To overcome this difficulty, we convert the main problem to some sub-problems by fixing some constraints and solving them with iterative algorithms such as successive convex optimization and reaching the solution for the main problem. Physical layer security (PLS) has been proposed to afford an extra layer of security on top of the conventional cryptographic techniques. Unlike the conventional complexity-based cryptographic techniques at the upper layers, physical layer security exploits the characteristics of wireless channels, e.g., fading, noise, interference, etc., to enhance wireless security. It is proved that secure transmission can benefit from fading channels. Accordingly, numerous researchers have explored what fading can offer for physical layer security, especially the investigation of physical layer security over wiretap fading channels. Therefore, this paper aims at reviewing the existing and ongoing research works on this topic. More specifically, we present a classification of research works in terms of the four categories of fading models: (i) small-scale, (ii) large-scale, (iii) composite, and (iv) cascaded. To elaborate these fading models with a generic and flexible tool, three promising candidates, including the mixture gamma (MG), mixture of Gaussian (MoG), and Fox's H-function distributions, are comprehensively examined and compared. Their advantages and limitations are further demonstrated via security performance metrics, which are designed as vivid indicators to measure how perfect secrecy is ensured. Two clusters of secrecy metrics, namely (i) secrecy outage probability (SOP), and the lower bound of SOP; and (ii) the probability of nonzero secrecy capacity (PNZ), the intercept probability, average secrecy capacity (ASC), and ergodic secrecy capacity, are displayed and, respectively, deployed in passive and active eavesdropping scenarios. Apart from those, revisiting the secrecy enhancement techniques based on Wyner's wiretap model, the on-off transmission scheme, jamming approach, antenna selection, and security region are discussed. Bitstream modulated transmitters may offer improved power efficiency and linearity simultaneously in RF power amplifiers. Several modulation techniques including envelop delta-sigma modulation and envelope pulse width modulation have been applied. The out-of-band quantization noise associated with these modulations may be rejected by a high-quality factor output filter, yet the in-band quantization noise needs to be further suppressed to meet the requirement of the emission mask. The proposed channelized active noise elimination technique can offer additional quantization noise suppression through software control without involving a passive filter. The essential concept is based on combining the outputs of multiple channels of Pas that have digitally controlled delays to form a FIR filter in analogue domain. A two-channel and a four-channel GaN power amplifiers are built to demonstrate this noise suppression concept and power combiners based on T-junction with quarter wavelength transmission line are proposed to retain the high power efficiency of the transmitters. Singular value decomposition (SVD) beamforming is an attractive tool for reducing the energy consumption of data transmissions in wireless sensor networks whose nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. However, this method is often not practical due to two important shortcomings: it requires channel state information at the transmitter and the computation of the SVD of the channel matrix is generally too complex. To deal with these issues, we propose a method for establishing an SVD beamforming link without requiring feedback of actual channel or SVD coefficients to the transmitter. Concretely, our method takes advantage of channel reciprocity and a power iteration algorithm (PIA) for determining the precoding and decoding singular vectors from received preamble sequences. A low-complexity version that performs no iterations is proposed and shown to have a signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) loss within 1 dB of the bit error rate of SVD beamforming with least squares channel estimates. The low-complexity method significantly outperforms maximum ratio combining diversity and Alamouti coding. We also show that the computational cost of the proposed PIA-based method is less than the one of using the Golub–Reinsch algorithm for obtaining the SVD. The number of computations of the low-complexity version is an order of magnitude smaller than with Golub–Reinsch. This difference grows further with antenna array size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we consider opportunistic routing in multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) random wireless ad-hoc networks (WANETs). Our analysis uses a proper model of the physical layer together with an abstraction of the higher communication layers. We assume that the nodes are distributed according to a Poisson point process and consider a routing scheme that opportunistically selects the next relay and the number of spatially multiplexed data streams. The routing decisions are based on geographic locations, the channel gains of the neighbor nodes, and the statistical characterization of all other nodes. Unlike the single antenna case, the optimal routing scheme cannot be explicitly expressed. Hence, we propose a smart-routing scheme for MIMO that adapts the number of data streams per user to the channel conditions. The numerical results demonstrate that this scheme outperforms all previously published schemes for this scenario. The findings highlight the importance of channel state information for efficient routing, and the need for an adaptive selection of the number of data streams at each transmitter. This paper studies the communication problem between UAVs and cellular base stations in a 5G IoT scenario where multiple UAVs work together. We are dedicated to the uplink channel modeling and the performance analysis of the uplink transmission. In the channel model, we consider the impact of 3D distance and multi-UAVs reflection on wireless signal propagation. The 3D distance is used to calculate the path loss, which can better reflect the actual path loss. The power control factor is used to adjust the UAV's uplink transmit power to compensate for different propagation path losses, so as to achieve precise power control. This paper proposes a binary exponential power control algorithm suitable for 5G networked UAV transmitters and presents the entire power control process including the open-loop phase and the closed-loop phase. The effects of power control factors on coverage probability, spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency under different 3D distances are simulated and analyzed. The aim of this work is to study the impact of small receiver displacement on a signal propagation in a typical conference room environment at a millimeter wave frequency of 60 GHz. While channel measurements provide insights on the propagation phenomena, their use for the wireless system performance evaluation is challenging. Whereas, carefully executed three-dimensional ray tracing (RT) simulations represent a more flexible option. Nevertheless, a careful validation of simulation methodology is needed. The first target of this article is to highlight the benefits of an in-house built three-dimensional RT tool at 60 GHz and shows the effectiveness of simulations in predicting different characteristics of the channel. To validate the simulation results against the measurements, two different transmitter (Tx) positions and antenna types along with ten receiver (Rx) positions are considered in a typical conference room. In first system configuration, an omnidirectional antenna is placed in the middle of the table, while in the second system configuration a directed horn antenna is located in the corner of the meeting room. After validating the simulation results with the measurement data, in the second part of this work, the impact of a small change, i.e., 20 cm in the receiver position, is studied. To characterize the impact, we apply as performance indicators the received power level, root mean square delay spread (RMS-DS) and RMS angular spread (RMS-AS) in azimuth plane. The channel characteristics are considered with respect to the direct orientation (DO), i.e., the Rx antenna is directed toward the strongest incoming path. Different antenna configurations at the Tx and Rx side are applied to highlight the role of antenna properties on the considered channel characteristics. Especially, in the second system configuration the impact of different antenna half power beamwidth on different considered channel characteristics is highlighted through acquired simulation results. The validation of results shows the RMS error of only 2–3 dB between the measured and simulated received power levels for different Tx configurations in the direction of DO. Results indicate that only a small change of the Rx position may result a large difference in the received power level even in the presence of line-of-sight between the Tx and Rx. It is found that the STD of received power level across the room increases with the decrease in HPBW of the antenna. In order to guarantee a robust transmission of JPWL (JPEG Wireless: Joint Photographic Experts Group Wireless) images through time and frequency selective wireless channels, an efficient adaptive communication strategy is proposed. It is based on an optimization of a closed-loop adaptive multiple-input multiple-output, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) scheme associated with a shaping BICM (bit-interleaved coded modulation) technique composed of a duo binary turbo code (DBTC), high-order modulations such as 64–256 QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) and a shaping code. According to the CSI (channel state information) knowledge at the transmitter side, an algorithm based on unequal error protection (UEP) and unequal power allocation (UPA) is used to select the transmitter key parameters (source/channel encoder rate, modulation order, power, number of quality layers and number of iterations of the Turbo decoder) to achieve the target Quality of Service (QoS). The proposed DBTC-shaping BICM scheme reaches a shaping gain of 1.2 dB for a 256 QAM modulation over a SISO Gaussian channel, whereas only 0.7 dB of shaping gain can be achieved in a scheme that uses the LDPC shaping BICM scheme for the same modulation order. Based on a DBTC shaping BICM scheme and an adaptive algorithm, the proposed MIMO-OFDM strategy achieves better performance compared to a strategy using an iterative process between an RS (Reed-Solomon) and arithmetic decoders. As a result, and on the one hand, a gain of 5.38 dB can be achieved in terms of PSNR (peak signal-to-noise ratio). On the other hand, a gain of 78% in terms of power consumption is obtained for the same QoS level. Moreover, the adaptive number of iterations in the proposed strategy can minimize the computational complexity of the turbo decoding compared to a scheme using four iterations whatever the channel conditions. In this paper, we investigate the secrecy performance of short-packet transmissions in ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC). We consider the scenario where a multi-antenna source communicates with a single-antenna legitimate receiver requiring ultra-high reliability and low latency, in the presence of a single-antenna eavesdropper. In order to safeguard URLLC, the source transmits the artificial noise (AN) signal together with the confidential signal to confuse the eavesdropper. We adopt a lower bound on the maximal secrecy rate as the secrecy performance metric for short-packet transmissions in URLLC, which takes the target decoding error probabilities at the legitimate receiver and the eavesdropper into account. Using this metric, we first derive a compact expression of the generalized secrecy outage probability (SOP). Then, we formally prove that the generalized SOP is a convex function with respect to the power allocation factor between the confidential signal and the AN signal. We further determine the optimal power allocation factor that minimizes the generalized SOP. The results presented in this work can be useful for designing new secure transmission schemes for URLLC. Wireless communications between two devices can be protected by secret keys. However, existing key generation schemes suffer from the high bit disagreement rate and low bit generation rate. In this paper, we propose an efficient physical layer key generation scheme by exploring the Received Signal Strength (RSS) of signals. In order to reduce the high mismatch rate of the measurements and to increase the key generation rate, a pair of transmitter and receiver separately apply adaptive quantization algorithm for quantifying the measurements. Then, we implement a randomness extractor to further increase key generation rate and ensure randomness of generated of keys. Several real-world experiments are implemented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. In this paper, we investigate the problem of dynamic power allocation for a multiuser transmitter supplied by hybrid energy sources in details. Specifically, we focus on the hybrid energy sources which include both the traditional power grid and various renewable sources whereby there are a few issues in considerations: (1) The energy harvested jointly from various renewable sources is time-varying and possibly unpredictable and is stored in a limited capacity buffer with battery leakage. (2) At the meantime, the data arrives randomly to the transmitter and queues according to the individual receivers to wait to be transmitted. (3) In addition, the wireless channels fluctuate randomly due to fading. Taking into account the time variant and dynamic features of this system, we develop a dynamic power allocation algorithm for the transmitter with the aim of minimizing the average amount of energy consumption from the power grid over an infinite horizon, subject to all data in queues cannot exceed a given deadline of receivers. The research question is formulated as a stochastic optimization problem, then we utilize Lyapunov optimization to exploit an online algorithm with low complexity, and it does not require prior statistical knowledge of the stochastic processes. Performance analysis of the proposed algorithm is carried out in theory, which shows that the proposed algorithm performs arbitrarily close to the optimal objective value; meanwhile, the algorithm ensures that the maximum delay of all data queues cannot exceed a given value. In this paper, we investigate the joint resource allocation to provide secure information transmission in a five-node cooperative cognitive radio network, which contains a primary transmitter (PT), a primary receiver (PR), a secondary transmitter (ST), a secondary receiver (SR), and an eavesdropper (E). To ensure the information is securely transmitted, PT and PR use a part of the power to transmit artificial noise (i.e., jamming signal) to confuse the eavesdropper. Specifically, in the first phase, PT transmits its signal, which contains secrecy information and artificial noise, by using all of its power and bandwidth. In the second phase, ST accesses to the PT's licensed bandwidth as a trusted relay by allocating a fraction of the bandwidth and power to forward PT's information with decode-and-forward (DF) relaying protocol. As a reward, ST can utilize the remaining bandwidth and power to transmit its own information simultaneously. We study the joint optimization of the time, bandwidth, and power allocation to maximize ST's transmission rate while satisfying PT's secrecy transmission rate requirements. In a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) full-duplex network, where an in-band full-duplex infrastructure node communicates with two half-duplex mobiles supporting simultaneous up- and downlink flows, the inter-mobile interference between the up- and downlink mobiles limits the system performance. We study the impact of leveraging an out-of-band side channel between mobiles in such network under different channel models. For time-invariant channels, we aim to characterize the generalized degrees-of-freedom ( GDoF) of the side-channel-assisted MIMO full-duplex network. For slow-fading channels, we focus on the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of the system with various assumptions as to the availability of channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). The key to the optimal performance is a vector bin-and-cancel strategy leveraging Han-Kobayashi message splitting, which is shown to achieve the system capacity region to within a constant bit. We quantify how the side channel improve the GDoF and DMT compared to a system without the extra orthogonal spectrum. The insights gained from our analysis reveal (i) the tradeoff between spatial resources from multiple antennas at different nodes and spectral resources of the side channel and (ii) the interplay between the channel uncertainty at the transmitter and use of the side channel. A pattern-based cognitive communication system (PBCCS) that optimizes non-periodic RF waveforms for security applications is proposed. PBCCS is a cross-layer approach that merges the channel encoding and modulation. The transmitter encodes sequences of bits into continuous signal patterns by selecting the proper symbol glossaries. The cognitive receiver preprocesses the received signal by extracting a limited set of wavelet features. The extracted features are fed into an artificial neural network (ANN) to recover the digital data carried by the distorted symbol. The PBCCS system offers a flexible management for robustness against a high noise level and increases the spectral efficiency. In this study, the spectral efficiency and robustness of a PBCCS scheme for an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is investigated. The results show that at an SNR of −5 dB, a 3-bit glossary achieves a bit error rate (BER) of 10. Also, the link spectral efficiency (LSE) of the proposed system is 2.61 bps/Hz. A multicarrier signal can be synthesized thanks to a symbol sequence and a Gabor family (i.e., a regularly time-frequency shifted version of a generator pulse). In this article, we consider the case where the signaling density is increased such that inter-pulse interference is unavoidable. Over an additive white Gaussian noise channel, we show that the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is maximized when the transmitter and the receiver use the same tight Gabor frame. What is more, we give practical efficient realization schemes and show how to build tight frames based on usual generators. Theoretical and simulated bit-error probability are given for a non-coded system using quadrature amplitude modulations. Such a characterization is then used to predict the convergence of a coded system using low-density parity-check codes. This paper proposes the use of a transmitter based on a linear amplification with nonlinear components (LINC) architecture, in which the reconfigurable matching networks (RMNs) are included. By varying the RMN active cell number, it is possible to change the load impedance at the power amplifier (PA) output, improving the amplifier drain efficiency and therefore the efficiency of the whole system. A long-term evolution (LTE) downlink signal with a bandwidth of 1.4 MHz and a peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of 11.48 dB is applied in order to carry out the experiments. Results show that the use of the RMNs in a LINC architecture improves the efficiency at all tested frequencies, especially at 927 MHz reaching an enhancement of 36.50%. Regarding the distortion, the adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) values increase in all cases, with an improvement of 3.5 dB at 958 MHz. This paper addresses the self-interference (SI) cancellation at baseband for full-duplex MIMO communication systems in consideration of practical transmitter imperfections. In particular, we develop a subspace-based algorithm to jointly estimate the SI and intended channels and the nonlinear distortions. By exploiting the covariance and pseudo-covariance of the received signal, we can increase the dimension of the received signal subspace while keeping the dimension of the signal subspace constant, and hence, the proposed algorithm can be applied to most of full-duplex MIMO configurations with arbitrary numbers of transmit and receive antennas. The channel coefficients are estimated, up to an ambiguity term, without any knowledge of the intended signal. A joint detection and ambiguity identification scheme is proposed. Ina wireless ad hoc network, single-antenna nodes can cooperate in their transmissions to create a virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel for maximizing the spatial multiplexing gain. However, implementing virtual-MIMO transmission can result in overwhelming overhead, such as channel state information (CSI) feedback and local data exchange, as the number of cooperating nodes increases. To suppress this overhead, we apply the principle of virtual-MIMO transmission to CSI feedback and design a novel framework for supporting parallel feedback streams, called virtual-MIMO feedback. Building on this feedback framework, we optimize virtual-MIMO transmission techniques and quantify their throughput gains in the presence of CSI and local-exchange overhead. To be specific, the outage capacities of these virtual-MIMO techniques are analyzed, and the corresponding bandwidth allocation for local data exchange and long-range transmission is optimized in a way to maximize overall spectral efficiency. Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) is the universally, openly standardized digital broadcasting system for all frequencies including LW, MW, and SW as well as VHF bands. Alongside providing high audio quality to listeners, DRM satisfies technological requirements posed by broadcasters, manufacturers and regulatory authorities and thus bears a great potential for the future of global radio. One of the key issues here concerns green broadcasting. Facing the need for high-power transmitters to cover wide areas, there is room for improvement concerning the power efficiency of DRM-transmitters. A major drawback of DRM is its high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) due to the applied transmission technology based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), which results in non-linearities in the emitted signal, low power efficiency, and high costs of transmitters. To overcome this, numerous schemes have been investigated for reducing PAPR in OFDM systems. In this paper, we review and analyze various technologies to reduce PAPR providing that the technical feasibility and DRM-specific system architecture and edge conditions regarding the system performance in terms of modulation error rate, compliance with frequency mask, and synchronization efficiency are ensured. All evaluations are carried out with I/Q signals which are monitored in real operation to present the actual performance of proposed PAPR techniques. Subsequently, the capability of the best approach is evaluated via measurements on a DRM test platform, where achieved transmit power gain of 10 dB is shown. According to our evaluation results, PAPR reduction schemes based on active constellation extension followed by a filter prove to be promising towards practical realization of power-efficient transmitters. An improved triple-pulse high-power pulse-width modulation (HP-PWM) signal model is proposed to enhance the performance of current underwater sonar transmitter. The presented model is based on reducing the third and fifth harmonic energy of the HP-PWM signal. The achievement of low-power consumption has been implemented using class D amplifier and high-quality factor (High-Q) underwater acoustic transducer (UAT). High efficiency is demonstrated by simulations (reducing 41 % of the third and fifth harmonic energy). Feasibility of the presented model under different conditions has been proved by experiments. We investigate a method to set the maximum allowable transmit power for a secondary base station in dynamic spectrum sharing among secondary users and primary users. In conventional methods, location information is assumed. Thus, the maximum allowable transmit power can be set by considering the shadowing between the secondary base station and the primary user receivers to satisfy a constraint. Specifically, the probability that the interference from secondary base station exceeds the acceptable level must be less than the constraint target probability. We assume that the location information is not available at the secondary network. Instead, the secondary base station uses the received signal strength from the primary user transmitter for distance estimation. In this case, we have to consider shadowing not only between the secondary base station and the primary user receivers, but also between the primary user transmitter and the secondary receiver(s). We also need to account for the uncertainty of the distance. In order to satisfy the constraint target probability, we proposed a two-step approach to setting the maximum allowable transmit power where a transmission decision margin and a transmit power margin are utilized. To reduce these margins, we also propose cooperative maximum allowable transmit power setting method utilizing also received signal strength values from several secondary users. Simulation results confirm the validity of the analysis and show the effectiveness of the proposed cooperative maximum allowable transmit power setting method, i.e., the capacity based on cooperative maximum allowable transmit power setting method is significantly better than that of non-cooperative maximum allowable transmit power setting method. We generally emphasize that the zeroforcing (ZF) technique backed by an appropriate medium access control (MAC) protocol can be used to address the inevitable hidden terminal (HT) problem in multi-user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) wireless local area network (WLAN) settings. However, to address the implementation-specific requirements of MU-MIMO WLANs, such as fairness in client access and throughput of the network, we propose a fairness and a throughput-aware ZF precoding in our design at the physical layer (PHY). This precoding scheme not only solves the HT problem but also meets the fairness and the throughput requirements of MU-MIMO WLANs. Besides, we design a MAC layer protocol, supportive to PHY, which decides transmission opportunities (TXOPs) among access points (APs) based on the available degrees of freedom (DoF). We make a mandatory provision in our design that APs should have a sufficient DoF. This can ensure collision-free transmission whenever APs/transmitters transmit in the HT scenario. Additionally, we design an improved channel sounding process for MU-MIMO WLANs with a less signaling overhead than IEEE802.11ac. We demonstrate the feasibility of our PHY in a USRP2/GNU Radio testbed prototype in the lab settings. It is found that our PHY improves the SNR and effective SNR of the received signal from about 5 to 11 dB in the HT scenario. The performance of our MAC design is checked with simulation studies in a typical six-antenna AP and clients scenario. We observe that our MAC protocol has a slightly higher signaling overhead than traditional ready to send/clear to send (RTS/CTS) due to design constraints; however, the signaling time overheads are reduced by 98.67 μs compared to IEEE802.11ac. Another interesting aspect to highlight is the constant Throughput gain of four to five times that of the traditional RTS/CTS. We consider the downlink of a multicell system comprised of base stations (BSs) and user terminals equipped with multiple antennas respectively on the condition that arbitrary BS cooperation and distance dependent propagation path loss are assumed. In this paper, we consider homogeneous networks for the rectangular coordinates and show the cell edge performance of cellular networks based on distance from their cell center, i.e., BS. We focus on the downlink capacity of edge users in the cellular networks and show that BS cooperation can improve the spectral efficiency. The BSs cooperate for their transmission to the cell edge users in order to improve their signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for inter-cell interference (ICI) cancelation in downlink multicell systems. When fractional frequency reuse (FFR) is applied to the cell edge, it is conjectured that BS cooperation, or a coordinated multipoint (CoMP), will further improve the system performance. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the reference schemes in terms of the cell edge SINR with a minimal impact on the path loss exponent in the networks. The main objective of this work is to improve the energy efficiency (EE) of a multiple access channel (MAC) system, through power control, in a distributed manner. In contrast with many existing works on energy-efficient power control, which ignore the possible presence of a queue at the transmitter, we consider a new generalized cross-layer EE metric. This approach is relevant when the transmitters have a non-zero energy cost even when the radiated power is zero and takes into account the presence of a finite packet buffer and packet arrival at the transmitter. As the Nash equilibrium (NE) is an energy-inefficient solution, the present work aims at overcoming this deficit by improving the global energy efficiency. Indeed, as the considered system has multiple agencies each with their own interest, the performance metric reflecting the individual interest of each decision-maker is the global energy efficiency defined then as the sum over individual energy efficiencies. Repeated games (RG) are investigated through the study of two dynamic games (finite RG and discounted RG), whose equilibrium is defined when introducing a new operating point (OP), Pareto-dominating the NE and relying only on individual channel state information (CSI). Accordingly, closed-form expressions of the minimum number of stages of the game for finite RG (FRG) and the maximum discount factor of the discounted RG (DRG) were established. Our contributions consist of improving the system performances in terms of powers and utilities when using the new OP compared to the NE and the Nash bargaining (NB) solution. Moreover, the cross-layer model in the RG formulation leads to achieving a shorter minimum number of stages in the FRG even for higher number of users. In addition, the social welfare (sum of utilities) in the DRG decreases slightly with the cross-layer model when the number of users increases while it is reduced considerably with the Goodman model. In this paper, an interference channel with a cognitive relay (IFC-CR) is considered to achieve spectrum sharing between a licensed primary user and an unlicensed secondary user. The CR assists both users in relaying their messages to the respective receivers, under the constraint that the performance of the legacy primary user is not degraded. Without requiring any non-causal knowledge, the CR uses a successive interference cancellation to first decode the primary and secondary messages after a transmission phase. A power allocation is then performed to forward a linear weighted combination of the processed signals in the relaying phase. Closed-form expressions of the end-to-end outage probability are derived for both primary and secondary users under the proposed approach. Furthermore, by exploiting the decoded primary and secondary messages in the first phase, we propose the use of dirty paper coding (DPC) at CR to pre-cancel the interference seen at the secondary (or primary) receiver in the second phase, which results in a performance upper bound for the secondary (or primary) user without affecting the other user. Simulation results demonstrate that with a joint consideration of the power control at the secondary transmitter and the power allocation at CR, performance gains can be achieved for both primary and secondary users. A received signal strength- (RSS-)-based indoor location method (ILS) for person/assets location in indoor scenarios is presented in this paper. Theoretical bases of the method are the integral equations relating the electromagnetic (EM) fields with their sources, establishing a cost function relating the measured field at the receivers and the unknown position of the transmitter. The aim is to improve the EM characterization of the scenario yielding in a more accurate indoor location method. Regarding network infrastructure implementation, a set of receivers are deployed through the coverage area, measuring the RSS value from a transmitter node which is attached to the asset to be located. The location method is evaluated in several indoor scenarios using portable measurement equipment. The next step has been the network hardware implementation using a wireless sensor network: for this purpose, ZigBee nodes have been selected. Finally, RSS measurements variability due to multipath effects and nonline-of-sight between transmitter and receiver nodes is mitigated using calibration and a correction based on the difference between the free space field decay law and the measured RSS. In wireless communications, the assumption that the transmitter has perfect channel state information (CSI) is often unreasonable, due to feedback delays, estimation errors, and quantization errors. In order to accurately assess system performance, a more careful analysis with imperfect CSI is needed. In this paper, the impact of partial CSI due to feedback delays in a multiuser Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MU-OFDM) cognitive radio (CR) system is investigated. The effect of partial CSI on the bit error rate (BER) is analyzed. A relationship between the transmit power and the number of bits loaded on a subcarrier is derived which takes into account the target BER requirement. With this relationship, existing resource allocation schemes which are based on perfect CSI being available can be applied when only partial CSI is available. Active interference cancellation (AIC) is an effective technique to provide interference avoidance feature for an ultrawideband (UWB) OFDM transmitter. Partial transmit sequence-AIC (PTS-AIC), which was recently proposed as an improvement of AIC, requires high computational complexity by doing the exhaustive search of all possible weighting factors whose number grows exponentially with the number of subblocks used. To reduce the complexity of PTS-AIC, this paper proposes a suboptimal way, called particle swarm optimization (PSO), to choose the weighting factors suboptimally without much performance degradation. Both continuous and discrete versions of PSO have been evaluated, and it has been shown that the discrete PSO is able to reduce the complexity significantly without sacrificing the performance of PTS-AIC in many cases. The performance of an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system can be significantly increased by using adaptive modulation and transmit diversity. An accurate estimate of the channel, however, is required at the transmitter to realize this benefit. Due to the time-varying nature of the channel, this estimate may be outdated by the time it is used for detection. This results in a mismatch between the actual channel and its estimate as seen by the transmitter. In this paper, we investigate adaptive OFDM with transmit and receive diversities, and evaluate the detrimental effects of this channel mismatch. We also describe a robust scheme based on using past estimates of the channel. We show that the effects of the mismatch can be significantly reduced with a combination of diversity and multiple channel estimates. In addition, to reduce the amount of feedback, the subband approach is introduced where a common channel estimate for a number of subcarriers is fedback to the transmitter, and the effect of this method on the achievable rate is analyzed. Low peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) transmissions significantly improve the cell coverage as they enable high power transmissions without saturating the power amplifier. To support the low PAPR transmissions, π/2-BPSK-based data and DMRS are introduced in the latest version of 5G NR specifications. In addition to that, the spatial multiplexing support is also extended to π/2-BPSK data transmissions. The DMRS sequences corresponding to these spatial streams (users) are frequency division multiplexed (FDM). However, the spectrum shaping process employed in the generation of π/2-BPSK waveforms is frequency selective and hence results in asymmetric spectrum shaping effect on DMRS sequences, when they are frequency multiplexed. This subsequently results in a non-uniform block error (BLER) and PAPR performances across the spatial users, which in turn may result in inter user interference across the spatial users. In this paper, we propose two transmitter architectures, namely method 1 and method 2, to generate low PAPR π/2-BPSK-based DMRS waveforms. The proposed architectures ensure that the spectrum shaping effect is uniform across all the spatial streams. This paper is concerned with diversity gain analysis for millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems employing distributed antenna subarray architecture. First, for a single-user mmWave system in which the transmitter and receiver consist of Kt and Kr subarrays, respectively, a diversity gain theorem is established when the numbers of subarray antennas go to infinity. Specifically, assuming that all subchannels have the same number of propagation paths L, the theorem states that by employing such a distributed antenna subarray architecture, a diversity gain of KrKtL−Ns+1 can be achieved, where Ns represents the number of data streams. This result means that compared to the co-located antenna architecture, using the distributed antenna subarray architecture can scale up the diversity gain proportionally to KrKt. The analysis of diversity gain is then extended to the multiuser scenario as well as the scenario with conventional partially connected radio-frequency structure in the literature. Simulation results obtained with the hybrid analog/digital processing corroborate the analysis results and show that the distributed subarray architecture indeed yields a significantly better diversity performance than the co-located antenna architectures. To address the increasing data rate demands for future wireless networks, a dense deployment of base stations or access points is the most promising approach; however, doing so may cause high intercell interference (ICI). Numerous interference coordination (IC) approaches have been proposed to reduce ICI. Conducting 5G communication on millimeter wave (mmWave) bands is more complex because of its higher propagation losses and greater attenuation variance, all of which depend on environment change. Massive antenna arrays with beamforming techniques can be used to overcome high propagation loss, reduce interference, deliver performance gains of coordination without a high overhead, and deliver high network capacity with multiplex transmitters. The central challenge of a massive antenna array that uses beamforming techniques is coordinating the users and beams for each transmitter within a large network. To address this challenge, we propose a novel two-level beamforming coordination approach that partitions a large network into clusters. At the intracluster level, this approach performs intracluster coordination similar to the user selection algorithms in a multiuser multiple input and multiple output (MU-MIMO); doing this maximizes the utility function or minimizes the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) function within a cluster. A dynamic time domain IC approach is employed at the intercluster level, collecting interference information for cluster-edge user equipment (UE) and allocating the UE dynamically among the clusters to reduce the intercluster interference for a switched-beam system (SBS). Simulation results show that the proposed two-level IC approach achieves a higher edge user performance or cell capacity than with the current uncoordinated/coordinated approaches. Compared to linear precoding, Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) requires less transmit power to eliminate the spatial interference in a multi-user downlink scenario involving a multi-antenna transmitter and geographically separated receivers. However, THP gives rise to certain performance losses, referred to as modulo loss and power loss. Based on the observation that part of the users can omit the modulo operation at the receiver during an entire frame, we present an alternative detector, which reduces the modulo loss compared to the conventional detector. In addition, this contribution compares several existing and novel algorithms for selecting the user ordering and the rotation of the constellations at the transmitter, to increase the SNR at the detector and decrease the modulo loss for the alternative detector. Compared to the better of linear precoding and THP with conventional detector, the optimized alternative detector achieves significant gains (up to about 4 dB) for terrestrial wireless communication, whereas smaller gains (up to about 1 dB) are obtained for multi-beam satellite communication. An un-coded multi-transmitter query scheme is introduced for wireless backscatter communication systems in which M transmitters and N receivers are used for single-tag connectivity (M × 1 × N). The main idea is to harden the wireless communication channel with a tag device for high data rate readings. The proposed method is designed for multipath fading channels in which the backscatter channel is a multiplicative Rayleigh. A coherent transmit query scheme is used to increase the tag-reflected signals and simultaneously alter the fading statistics in the forward path by implementing a receiver feedback. Full-diversity performance and array gain is achieved using the receiver diversity without requiring any tag antenna diversity. Therefore, the tag device remains simple.Mathematical expressions for the probability density function (PDF) of the backscatter channel are presented using closed-form equations. Bit error rate (BER) simulations for the binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation are computed numerically. Diversity gain of 10 dB is obtained by using a 2 × 1 × 1 scheme. The results show that the transmit diversity for single-tag usage performs the same as the tag antenna diversity, at the expense of a moderate transmitter complexity. The tag device remains intact as a requirement for the simplicity and size constraints. Also, the system realization becomes more feasible due to the available space on the transmitter side to accomplish the uncorrelated forward channel conditions. This paper investigates the multi-cell coordinated beamforming (MCBF) design for secure simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in both centralized and distributed manners. In each cell, one transmitter serves multiple information receivers (IRs) and energy receivers (ERs) with the non-linear energy harvesting (EH) model. Meanwhile, several eavesdroppers (Eves) intend to intercept the confidential information transmitted for IRs. To achieve a secure transmission, the artificial noise (AN) is embedded in the transmit signals of each transmitter. The proposed design is formulated into a power-minimization problem to guarantee the IRs’ information and ERs’ energy requirements while avoiding the information being intercepted by Eves. Since the problem is non-convex and not easy to solve, a solution method based on semi-definition relaxation (SDR) is proposed and the global optimum is proved to be guaranteed with full channel state information (CSI). We further present a distributed AN-aided MCBF for the system by using alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), with which each transmitter is able to calculate its own beamforming vectors and AN covariance matrix based on its local CSI. Simulation results show that our proposed distributed design converges to the global optimum obtained by the centralized one. It is also shown that by employing AN, the total required power of the system is reduced and the effect of AN on the system performance decreases with increment of transmit antennas. Outphasing transmitters have been explored to study the trade-off between linearity and efficiency. The outphasing technique enhances efficiency by operating two amplifiers at lower output amplitudes, using two constant envelope signals. Their major drawback is the inherent sensitivity to gain and phase imbalances between the two amplifier branches. Another important issue is related to the degradation of efficiency, especially in isolated combiners.
