- Abstract
THE FOLLOWING PAPER EXPLAINS THE DISCIPLINES AND CONCEPTS THAT HAVE ADDRESSED THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSIC AND SPACE DURING THE LAST DECADES IN THE AMERICAS. I CALL THIS FIELD "MUSICAL URBANISM", A NON-UNITARY SUBDISCIPLINE RESULTING FROM INTERDISCIPLINARY AREAS THAT STUDY THE SOUND IN THE CITY AND ITS IMPACT ON PEOPLE AND SOCIAL GROUPS. MY MAIN GOAL IS TO DEMONSTRATE THE EXISTENCE OF A GRAY BUT STRONGLY INTERDISCIPLINARY AREA THAT HAS BEEN GROWING IN RECENT DECADES IN THE MARGINS OF DISCIPLINES. THE TEXT IS STRUCTURED IN THREE PARTS. IN THE FIRST I MAKE AN INTELLECTUAL ITINERARY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSICAL AND URBAN STUDIES, GIVING PARTICULAR EMPHASIS TO THE GEOGRAPHY OF MUSIC AND URBAN ETHNOMUSICOLOGY IN THE UNITED STATES AND LATIN AMERICA. IN THE SECOND, I BRIEFLY EXPLAIN THE MOST IMPORTANT CONCEPTS AROUND WHICH THIS AREA HAS BEEN DEVELOPED, SUCH AS SPACE, SCENE, CLUSTER AND FESTIVALIZATION, AS WELL AS SECONDARY IDEAS AROUND IT, LIKE CONSUMPTION, SOCIAL NETWORKS OR CREATIVE ECONOMIES. FINALLY, I HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC AS A WAY OF CREATING VALUE IN SPACE DUE TO ITS ABILITY TO GENERATE GOODS, FORMS OF CONSUMPTION AND EMOTIONS OF A DIVERSE NATURE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
