Abstract

This contribution will report on the experimental work on the level structure of 168Dy. The experimental data have been taken as part of the EURICA decay spectroscopy campaign at RIBF, RIKEN in November 2014. In the experiment, a 238U primary beam is accelerated up to 345 MeV/u with an average intensity of 12 pnA. The nuclei of interest are produced by in-flight fission of 238U impinging on Be target with a thickness of 5 mm. The excited states of 168Dy have been populated through the decay from a newly identified isomeric state and via the β decay from 168Tb. In this contribution, scientific motivations, experimental procedure and some preliminary results for this study are presented.

Abstract

© The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017. This short paper presents the identification of a metastable, isomeric-state decay in the neutron-rich odd-odd, prolate-deformed nucleus 166Tb. The nucleus of interest was formed using the in-flight fission of a 345 MeV per nucleon 238U primary beam at the RIBF facility, RIKEN, Japan. Gamma-ray transitions decaying from the observed isomeric states in 166Tb were identified using the EURICA gamma-ray spectrometer, positioned at the final focus of the BigRIPS fragments separator. The current work identifies a single discrete gamma-ray transition of energy 119 keV which de-excites an isomeric state in 166Tb with a measured half-life of 3.5(4) μs. The multipolarity assignment for this transition is an electric dipole and is made on the basis internal conversion and decay lifetime arguments. Possible two quasi-particle Nilsson configurations for the initial and final states which are linked by this transition in 166Tb are made on the basis of comparison with Blocked BCS Nilsson calculations, with the predicted ground state configuration for this nucleus arising from the coupling of the v(1-/2)[521] and π(3+/2) Nilsson orbitals. ispartof: EPJ Web of Conferences vol:146 ispartof: ND 2016: International Conference on Nuclear Data for Science and Technology location:Bruges, Belgium date:11 Sep - 16 Sep 2016 status: Published online

Abstract

Lifetimes of excited states of the 98;100;102Zr nuclei were measured by using the Generalized Centroid Difference Method. The nuclei of interest were populated via neutron-induced fission of 241Pu and 235U during the EXILL-FATIMA campaign. The obtained lifetimes were used to calculate the B(E2) transition strengths and β deformation parameters which were then compared with the recent theoretical predictions obtained with Monte Carlo Shell Model.

Abstract

At the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, germanium-gated γ-γ fast-timing lifetime measurements of nuclear excited states in neutron-rich nuclei have been performed within a prompt γ-ray spectroscopy experimental campaign. We report on results obtained from the cold-neutron induced fission of 235 U. The excited secondary fission products were stopped almost instantaneously within the thick target and the γ rays emitted were collected triggerlessly using the EXILL&FATIMA mixed array of HPGe and LaBr 3 (Ce) detectors. Precise lifetimes could be determined by analysing the γ-γ time difference spectra using the generalized centroid difference method. This picosecondsensitive method provides many advantages and is briefly explained. Still, the major source of systematic errors is related to the contribution of time-correlated Compton background. The EXILL&FATIMA results are discussed with respect to the typical energy-dependent timing behaviour of the background. According to the time response of the background, appropriate methods and a time correction for the sub-nanosecond regime are proposed.

Abstract

At the PF1B cold neutron beam line at the Institut Laue Langevin, the EXILL array consisting of EXOGAM, GASP and ILL-Clover detectors was used to perform (n,$\gamma$) measurements at very high coincidence rates. About ten different reactions were measured in autumn 2012 using a highly collimated cold neutron beam. In spring 2013, the EXOGAM array was combined with 16 LaBr3(Ce) scintillators in the EXILL&FATIMA campaign for the measurement of lifetimes using the generalised centroid difference method. We report on the properties of the set-ups and present first results from both campaigns.

Abstract

To study the β-decay properties of some well known delayed neutron emitters an experiment was performed in 2009 at the IGISOL facility (University of Jyvaskyla in Finland) using Total Absorption -ray Spectroscopy (TAGS) technique. The aim of these measurements is to obtain the full β-strength distribution below the neutron separation energy (Sn) and the γ/neutron competition above. This information is a key parameter in nuclear technology applications as well as in nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure. Abstract

In a nuclear reactor, the decay of fission fragments is at the origin of decay heat and antineutrino flux. These quantities are not well known while they are very important for reactor safety and for our understanding of neutrino physics. One reason for the discrepancies observed in the estimation of the decay heat and antineutrinos flux coming from reactors could be linked with the Pandemonium effect. New measurements have been performed at the JYFL facility of Jyvaskyla with a Total Absorption Spectrometer (TAS) in order to circumvent this effect. Abstract

A range of high resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements have been carried out using arrays which include a number of Cerium-doped Lanthanum-Tribromide (LrBr3 (Ce)) scintillation detectors used in conjunction with high-resolution hyper-pure germanium detectors. Examples of the spectral and temporal responses of such set-ups, using both standard point radioactive sources 152 Eu and 56 Co, and in-beam fusionevaporation reaction experiments for precision measurements of nuclear excited states in 34 P and 138 Ce are presented. The current and future use of such arrays at existing (EURICA at RIKEN) and future (NUSTAR at FAIR) secondary radioactive beam facilities for precision measurements of excited nuclear state lifetimes in the 10 ps to 10 ns regime are also discussed.

Decay heat represents about 7% of the reactor power during operation and strongly impacts reactor safety. Reactor antineutrino detection is used in several fundamental neutrino physics experiments and it can also be used for reactor monitoring and non-proliferation purposes. Rb-92,Rb-93 are two fission products of importance in reactor antineutrino spectra and decay heat, but their beta-decay properties are not well known. New measurements of Rb-92,Rb-93 beta-decay properties have been performed at the IGISOL facility (Jyvaskyla, Finland) using Total Absorption Spectroscopy (TAS). TAS is complementary to techniques based on Germanium detectors. It implies the use of a calorimeter to measure the total gamma intensity de-exciting each level in the daughter nucleus providing a direct measurement of the beta feeding. In these proceedings we present preliminary results for Rb-93, our measured beta feedings for Rb-92 and we show the impact of these results on reactor antineutrino spectra and decay heat calculations.

Abstract

This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Common Attribution Licence 4.0 which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.; International audience; A novel method for direct electronic "fast-timing" lifetime measurements of nuclear excited statesvia γ-γ coincidences using an array equipped with N very fast high-resolution LaBr3(Ce) scintillator detectorsis presented. The generalized centroid difference method provides two independent “start” and “stop” timespectra obtained without any correction by a superposition of the N(N − 1)/2 calibrated γ-γ time differencespectra of the N detector fast-timing system. The two fast-timing array time spectra correspond to a forwardand reverse gating of a specific γ-γ cascade and the centroid difference as the time shift between the centroidsof the two time spectra provides a picosecond-sensitive mirror-symmetric observable of the set-up. The energydependentmean prompt response difference between the start and stop events is calibrated and used as a singlecorrection for lifetime determination. These combined fast-timing array mean γ-γ zero-time responses can bedetermined for 40 keV < Eγ < 1.4 MeV with a precision better than 10 ps using a 152Eu γ-ray source. Thenew method is described with examples of (n,γ) and (n,f,γ) experiments performed at the intense cold-neutronbeam facility PF1B of the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France, using 16 LaBr3(Ce) detectors withinthe EXILL&FATIMA campaign in 2013. The results are discussed with respect to possible systematic errorsinduced by background contributions.

Abstract

A γ-ray spectrometer with fast-timing capabilities, constructed of LaBr3(Ce:5%) detectors, is under development for use at the future Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research (FAIR). The physics aims of this device are to measure the half-lives of excited states in the region of ∼50 ps to several ns, in exotic nuclei. Monte-Carlo simulations using the GEANT4 software package have determined the final design of this fast-timing array by calculating the full-energy peak efficiencies of several different detector geometries. The results of the simulated efficiencies for each configuration were used to calculate the timing precision. Consequently, an array of thirty six, o3.8×5.1 cm cylindrical crystals was found to be the optimum configuration. The detectors were purchased and subsequently characterised, with each detector found to have intrinsic energy and timing resolutions of ∼ 2.8 % (FWHM) and ∼ 210 ps (FWHM) for the 1173 and 1332 keV decays from 60Co. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2013.

Abstract

Better knowledge of the neutron population in reactors is crucial to improve the accuracy of neutronics simulations of present day or future reactor cores. This population is partially driven by (n, xn) reactions. However, the cross sections of these reactions are not precisely known. This is particularly true for the 238U(n, n'γ) cross section, which is on the High Priority Request List. One method to measure this cross section is to use the prompt γ-ray spectroscopy coupled to time-of-flight measurements. This allows the total (n, n') cross section to be inferred from the measured (n, xnγ) cross sections and the level scheme information. However, the knowledge of the 238U level scheme is still very incomplete, so an initiative to experimentally revisit the 238U structure has been launched using γ-γ coincidences spectroscopy. The v-Ball γ-spectrometer was coupled to the LICORNE directional neutron source of the ALTO facility, allowing study of inelastic scattering on 238U via γ-γ coincidences. The analysis of data obtained during the first v-Ball campaign was performed using the Radware escl8r software. At the present time, 73 γ-transitions and 50 levels registered in ENSDF have been confirmed and 120 new γ-transitions and 50 new levels have been found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In the last decades, measurements of spallation, fragmentation and Coulex induced fission reactions in inverse kinematics have provided valuable data to accurately investigate the fission dynamics and nuclear structure at large deformations of a large variety of stable and non-stable heavy nuclei. The collected data were used to constrain dynamic and nuclear structure parameters of different de-excitation models, such as ABLA and GEF, but the data can also be used to constrain the parameterizations describing the pre-fragment properties after the nuclear collision, such as the angular momentum gained by the pre-fragment. In this work, the fissioning system yields are compared to calculations assuming different parameterizations for modeling the angular momentum gained by the compound nuclei. Our findings indicate that the parameterizations utilized by abrasion models clearly underestimate the angular momentum, resulting in the underestimation of the production of lighter fissioning systems. Abstract

A fast-timing experiment was performed at the Argonne National Laboratory to measure the lifetimes of the lowest lying states of nuclei belonging to the deformed regions around mass number A≃110 and A≃150. These regions were populated via spontaneous fission of 252Cf and the gamma radiation following the decay of excited states in the fission fragments was measured using 51 Gammasphere detectors coupled with 25 LaBr3:Ce detectors. A brief description of the acquisition system and some preliminary results from the fast-timing analysis of the fission fragment 100Zr are presented. The lifetime value of τ = 840(65) ps was found for the 2+ state in 100Zr consistent within one standard deviation of the adopted value with 791 +26-35ps. This is associated with a quadrupole deformation parameter of 0.36(2) which is within one standard deviation of the literature value of 0.3556+82-57. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The γ-ray detection efficiency of a detector decreases over time due to factors like radiation damage or an increase in the thickness of the inactive dead layer. For large γ-ray detector facilities, it is crucial to assess the health condition and performance of the inner regions of the detector crystals over time. In this study, we have introduced a method using GEANT4 simulation to detect defective regions within thick γ-ray detectors. In the experimental phase, a scanning setup was employed, comprising a single-crystal High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector and a position-sensitive GAGG:Ce detector for coincidence measurements, using a 22Na source. The 2D images were reconstructed from the front-face and side-face scans of the single-crystal coaxial HPGe detector, employing an energy gate set at 511 keV. A position gate applied to a specific section of those 2D images allowed for the mapping of γ-ray interactions along a conical path within the HPGe detector. The methodology involved the comparison and analysis of histograms generated from various sector gates, facilitating the identification of the defective region's position. In the GEANT4 simulation, a defective region was defined within the crystal, and that was effectively represented in the corresponding scanned image, which exhibited reduced efficiency. It's important to note that this method's effectiveness is restricted by the absorption profile of the 511 keV γ-ray, limiting its applicability to a depth of approximately 4 cm from the surface of the HPGe crystal. Understanding how the heavy chemical elements are made in the astrophysical r-process requires information on both the properties of the nuclei involved and that of the environment. The availability of experimental information on the neutron-rich N∼126 nuclei is discussed, with emphasis on phenomena specifically relevant to this region: the large role of first-forbidden β decays, and that of the Δn=0 selection rule in Gamow-Teller decays. Abstract

β− decay lifetimes are essential ingredients for r-process yield calculations. In N≈126 r-process waiting point nuclei first-forbidden and allowed β decays are expected to compete. Recent experiments performed at CERN/ISOLDE showed that 207,208Hg decay predominantly via first-forbidden decays. In addition, following on a high statistics study of the β+ /EC decay of 208At, it is suggested that the Z>82, N<126 nuclei provide an excellent testing ground for global calculations addressing the competition between first-forbidden and allowed β decays. Abstract

Lifetimes of excited states of the 98;100;102Zr nuclei were measured by using the Generalized Centroid Difference Method. The nuclei of interest were populated via neutron-induced fission of 241Pu and 235U during the EXILL-FATIMA campaign. The obtained lifetimes were used to calculate the B(E2) transition strengths and β deformation parameters which were then compared with the recent theoretical predictions obtained with Monte Carlo Shell Model. Abstract

The β-decay half lives of nuclei near the r-process path are critical information required for abundance calculations, especially those near neutron number N = 82. Specifically, the nuclei below doubly-magic 132Sn are key, and play an important role in the formation and shape of the second r-process abundance peak. The half lives in this region are challenging to measure due to the significant β-delayed neutron decay branches and the population of isomeric states with half lives comparable to the ground states. However, by measuring the time distribution of γ rays, these complications can be eliminated. This requires, however, a very effcient γ-ray spectrometer since the production of isotopes in this region is very limited. The new GRIFFIN array at TRIUMF-ISAC provides the high effciency required for these measurements. Recent improvements in the quality of the beams produced at TRIUMF, employing the IG-LIS device, are outlined, as well as the current status of the ARIEL facility. The GRIFFIN spectrometer and its use are briefly described. The experiment to measure the half lives of 128-130Cd is outlined and the results given, and some examples of the power of GRIFFIN to expand decay schemes, specifically for the decay of 128Cd to 128In, are given. Abstract

At the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, germanium-gated γ-γ fast-timing lifetime measurements of nuclear excited states in neutron-rich nuclei have been performed within a prompt γ-ray spectroscopy experimental campaign. We report on results obtained from the cold-neutron induced fission of 235U. The excited secondary fission products were stopped almost instantaneously within the thick target and the γ rays emitted were collected triggerlessly using the EXILL&FATIMA mixed array of HPGe and LaBr3(Ce) detectors. Precise lifetimes could be determined by analysing the γ-γ time difference spectra using the generalized centroid difference method. This picosecondsensitive method provides many advantages and is briefly explained. Still, the major source of systematic errors is related to the contribution of time-correlated Compton background. The EXILL&FATIMA results are discussed with respect to the typical energy-dependent timing behaviour of the background. According to the time response of the background, appropriate methods and a time correction for the sub-nanosecond regime are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this work we present the results from two experiments dedicated to search for quadrupolecollective isovector valence-shell excitation, the states with so-called mixed proton-neutron symmetry (MSS), in nuclei around the doubly magic nucleus 208Pb. 212Po was studied in an α-transfer reaction. 204Hg was studied in an inverse kinematics Coulomb excitation reaction on a carbon target. Both experiments provide indications for existence of one-phonon MSSs. Those are the first experimentally identified MSSs in the mass A ≈ 208 region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

At the PF1B cold neutron beam line at the Institut Laue Langevin, the EXILL array consisting of EXOGAM, GASP and ILL-Clover detectors was used to perform (n,γ) measurements at very high coincidence rates. About ten different reactions were measured in autumn 2012 using a highly collimated cold neutron beam. In spring 2013, the EXOGAM array was combined with 16 LaBr3(Ce) scintillators in the EXILL&FATIMA campaign for the measurement of lifetimes using the generalised centroid difference method.
