The Trojan Horse method (THM) is a well-established experimental technique to measure nuclear reactions of astrophysical interest avoiding the suppression of the Coulomb barrier affecting experimental direct measurements. In this paper it will describe some of the THM studies involving few-body system of interest for both nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics, such as the sub-Coulomb proton-proton elastic scattering and the deuteron-deuteron fusion at energies of interest for primordial nucleosynthesis. Moreover, the role of the intercluster motion in nuclei used for THM measurement will be highlight for the discussed physics cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low-temperature antihydrogen atoms are an effective tool to probe the validity of the fundamental laws of Physics, for example the Weak Equivalence Principle (WEP) for antimatter, and -generally speaking- it is obvious that colder atoms will increase the level of precision. After the first production of cold antihydrogen in 2002 [1], experimental efforts have substantially progressed, with really competitive results already reached by adapting to cold antiatoms some well-known techniques pre- viously developed for ordinary atoms. Unfortunately, the number of antihydrogen atoms that can be produced in dedicated experiments is many orders of magnitude smaller than of hydrogen atoms, so the development of novel techniques to enhance the production of antihydrogen with well defined (and possibly controlled) conditions is essential to improve the sensitivity. We present here some experimental results achieved by the AEgIS Collaboration, based at the CERN AD (Antiproton Decelerator) on the production of antihydrogen in a pulsed mode where the production time of 90% of atoms is known with an uncertainty of ~ 250 ns [2]. The pulsed antihydrogen source is generated by the charge-exchange reaction between Rydberg positronium (Ps*) and an antiproton (p¯): p¯ + Ps* → H¯* + e−, where Ps* is produced via the implantation of a pulsed positron beam into a mesoporous silica target, and excited by two consecutive laser pulses, and antiprotons are trapped, cooled and manipulated in Penning-Malmberg traps. The pulsed production (which is a major milestone for AEgIS) makes it possible to select the antihydrogen axial temperature and opens the door for the tuning of the antihydrogen Rydberg states, their de-excitation by pulsed lasers and the manipulation through electric field gradients. In this paper, we present the results achieved by AEgIS in 2018, just before the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2), as well as some of the ongoing improvements to the system, aimed at exploiting the lower energy antiproton beam from ELENA [3]. The measurement of physics processes at new energy frontier experiments requires excellent spatial, time, and energy resolutions to resolve the structure of collimated high-energy jets. Calorimeters, as other detectors, must face this increasing performance demand. In a future TeV-scale Muon Collider, the beam-induced background (BIB) represents the main challenge in the design of the detectors and of the event reconstruction algorithms and can pose serious limitations to the physics performance. However, it is possible to reduce the BIB impact on the Muon Collider calorimeter by exploiting some of its characteristics and by ensuring high granularity, excellent timing, longitudinal segmentation and good energy resolution. The proposed R&D is an innovative semi-homogeneous electromagnetic calorimeter based on stackable modules of lead fluoride crystals (PbF2) readout by surface-mount UV-extended Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs): the Crilin calorimeter (CRystal calorImeter with Longitudinal INformation). The calorimeter should operate in a very harsh radiation environment, withstanding yearly a neutron flux of 1014 n1MeV /cm2 and a dose of 100 krad. In this paper, the radiation tolerance measured in several irradiation campaigns and the timing performances evaluated during a test beam at CERN-H2 with 120-GeV electron are discussed. Status of the LHAASO experiment and its latest results in both γ-ray astronomic observations and charged cosmic ray (CR) measurements are reported in this paper. The discovery of photons around 1 PeV from the Crab, 12 PeVatrons in our galaxy and new sources with emissions above 100 TeV declare the onset of the utral-high-energy γ-ray astronomy. The capability of measurements of spectra of the individual species of CRs, e.g. protons and iron nuclei, starts the new era of the high precision measurement of CRs using the ground based extensive air shower technique. The detection of the highest energy photon at 1.4 PeV from the remote potential source in Cygnus region allows to test of the violation of fundamental physics rules, such as the Lorentz Invariance, and set the highest limits in the tests. Lattice QCD calculations provide an ab initio access to hadronic process. These calculations are usu ally performed in a small cubic volume with periodic boundary conditions. The infinite volume extrapolations for three-body systems are indispensable to understand many systems of high current interest. We derive the three-body quantization condition in a finite volume using an effective field theory in the particle-dimer picture. Our work shows a powerful and transparent method to read off three-body physical observables from lattice simulations. In this paper, we review the formalism, quantization condition, spectrum analysis and energy shifts calculation both for 3-body bound states and scattering states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The CERN IT Storage group operates multiple distributed storage systems and is responsible for the support of the infrastructure to accommodate all CERN storage requirements, from the physics data generated by LHC and non-LHC experiments to the personnel users' files. EOS is now the key component of the CERN Storage strategy. It allows to operate at high incoming throughput for experiment data-taking while running concurrent complex production work-loads. This high-performance distributed storage provides now more than 250PB of raw disks and it is the key component behind the success of CERNBox, the CERN cloud synchronisation service which allows syncing and sharing files on all major mobile and desktop platforms to provide offline availability to any data stored in the EOS infrastructure. CERNBox recorded an exponential growth in the last couple of year in terms of files and data stored thanks to its increasing popularity inside CERN users community and thanks to its integration with a multitude of other CERN services (Batch, SWAN, Microsoft Office). In parallel CASTOR is being simplified and transitioning from an HSM into an archival system, focusing mainly in the long-term data recording of the primary data from the detectors, preparing the road to the next-generation tape archival system, CTA. The storage services at CERN cover as well the needs of the rest of our community: Ceph as data back-end for the CERN OpenStack infrastructure, NFS services and S3 functionality; AFS for legacy home directory filesystem services and its ongoing phase-out and CVMFS for software distribution. In this paper we will summarise our experience in supporting all our distributed storage system and the ongoing work in evolving our infrastructure, testing very-dense storage building block (nodes with more than 1PB of raw space) for the challenges waiting ahead. The alignment and calibration workflows at the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment are fundamental to provide a high quality physics data and to maintain the design performance of the experiment. To facilitate the operational efforts required by the experiment, the alignment and calibration team has developed and deployed a set of web-based applications to search, navigate and prepare a consistent set of calibrations to be consumed in reconstruction of data for physics, accessible through the Condition DB Browser. The Condition DB Browser hosts also various data management tools, including a vi-sualization tool that allows to easily inspect alignment an calibration contents, an user-defined notification agent for delivering updates on modification to the database, a logging service for the user and the automatic online-to-offline condition uploads. Cosmic Rays above 1017 eV allow studying hadronic interactions at energies that can not be attained at accelerators yet. At the same time hadronic interaction models have to be applied to the cosmic-ray induced air-shower cascades in atmosphere to infer the nature of cosmic rays. The reliability of air-shower simulations has become the source of one of the largest systematic uncertainty in the interpretation of cosmic-ray data due to the uncertainties in modeling the hadronic interaction driving the air-shower development. This paper summarises in the first part the recent results on the cosmic ray energy spectrum, composition and anisotropy from the knee region to the GZK cutoff [1, 2] of the spectrum by means of ground-based experiments. Most of the information reported in this contribution is taken from [3-5]. Aspects interconnecting cosmic ray and particle physics are reviewed in the second part of the paper. We have upgraded the new Tibet ASgamma experiment in China since 2014 to measure the chemical composition of cosmic rays around the knee. This hybrid experiment consist of an air-shower-core detector array (YAC-II) to detect high energy electromagnetic component, the Tibet air-shower array (Tibet-III) and a large underground water-Cherenkov muon-detector array (MD). We have carried out a detailed air-shower Monte Carlo (MC) simulation to study the performance of the hybrid detectors by using CORSIKA (version 7.5000), which includes EPOS-LHC, QGSJETII-04, SIBYLL2.1 and SIBYLL2.3 hadronic interaction models. The preliminary results of the interaction model checking above 50 TeV energy region are reported in this paper, and the primary proton and helium spectra in the energy range 50 TeV to 1015 eV was derived from YAC-I data and is smoothly connected with direct observation data at lower energies and also with our previously reported works at higher energies within statistical errors. The knee of the (P+He) spectra is located around 400 TeV. The interaction model dependence in deriving the primary (P+He) spectra is found to be small (less than 25% in absolute intensity, 10% in position of the knee), and the composition model dependence is less than 10% in absolute intensity. His seminal contributions cover an extremely wide range of topics: the foundation of the perturbative approach to QCD, various aspects of weak interaction theory, from basic questions (e.g. the mass of the Higgs) to lattice weak interaction, lattice QCD from the beginning to most recent computations. Recently, a new technology called WebGL shows a lot of potentials for developing games. However since this technology is still new, there are still many potentials in the game development area that are not explored yet. This paper tries to uncover the potential of integrating physics frameworks with WebGL technology in a game engine for developing 2D or 3D games. Specifically we integrated three open source physics frameworks: Bullet, Cannon, and JigLib into a WebGL-based game engine. Using experiment, we assessed these frameworks in terms of their correctness or accuracy, performance, completeness and compatibility. The results show that it is possible to integrate open source physics frameworks into a WebGL- based game engine, and Bullet is the best physics framework to be integrated into the WebGL-based game engine. High Energy Density (HED) physics spans over numerous areas of basic and applied physics, for example, astrophysics, planetary physics, geophysics, inertial fusion and many others. During the past fifteen years, great progress has been made on the development of bunched intense particle beams that have emerged as a novel tool for studying HED physics. In this paper we present two experiment designs that have been worked out for HED physics studies at the Facility for Antiprotons and Ion Research (FAIR) at Darmstadt. In the target design of the Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) program, it is common practice to apply radiation hydrodynamics code to study the key physical processes happening in ICF process, such as hohlraum physics, radiation drive symmetry, capsule implosion physics in the radiation-drive approach of ICF. Recently, many efforts have been done to develop our 2D integrated simulation capability of laser fusion with a variety of optional physical models and numerical methods. In order to effectively integrate the existing codes and to facilitate the development of new codes, we are developing an object-oriented structured-mesh parallel code-supporting infrastructure, called JASMIN. Based on two-dimensional three-temperature hohlraum physics code LARED-H and two-dimensional multi-group radiative transfer code LARED-R, we develop a new generation two-dimensional laser fusion code under the JASMIN infrastructure, which enable us to simulate the whole process of laser fusion from the laser beams' entrance into the hohlraum to the end of implosion. In this paper, we will give a brief description of our new-generation two-dimensional laser fusion code, named LARED-Integration, especially in its physical models, and present some simulation results of holhraum. In this paper, we compare experimental shock and capsule trajectories to design calculations using the radiation-hydrodynamics code hydra. The measured trajectories from surrogate ignition targets are consistent with reducing the x-ray flux on the capsule by about 85%. A new method of extracting the radiation temperature from x-ray data shows that about half of the apparent 15% flux deficit in the data with respect to the simulations can be explained by hydra overestimating the x-ray flux on the capsule. The Linac Coherent Light Source at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Stanford University, began operation in 2009 as the world's first hard x-ray free electron laser. Polymers are increasingly used in impact and complex high rate loading applications. Generally, the mechanical response of glassy polymers under high strain rates has been determined in compression. Some research programs have studied the combined effects of temperature and strain rate, still primarily in compression, providing better understanding of the physics behind the observed response and enhancing the models for these materials. However, limited data are available in tension, and even more limited are data describing both the compressive and tensile response of the same glassy polymer. This paper investigates the compressive and tensile response of glassy polymers across a range of stain rates from quasi-static to dynamic. Experimental results from dynamic mechanical analysis, quasi-static compression and tension, and split Hopkinson tension/pressure bars on several representative glassy polymers will be presented. The pressure dependant yield in these materials will be discussed through comparison of the tensile and compressive yield stresses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
