Globally, stroke is one of the primary causes of morbidity and mortality. In the USA, stroke is a major cause of death and disability. Limited studies assessed the impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, arsenic, and other metal exposure and their association with the risk of stroke. This study aimed to assess different arsenic species, including total arsenic; two types of organic arsenic, i.e., arsenobetaine and arsenocholine; four types of inorganic arsenic, i.e., arsenic acid, arsenous acid, dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), and monomethylarsonic acid (MMA); six types of urinary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds, i.e., 1-hydroxynaphthalene, 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, 1-hydroxypyrene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, and 3-hydroxyfluorene; and fourteen types of metals from urine specimen, i.e., manganese, cadmium, lead, mercury, barium, cobalt, strontium, molybdenum, cesium, thallium, antimony, tin, tungsten, and uranium and their association with those who reported having been told they had had a stroke by a medical professional. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data used in this study include three data cycles from 2011-2016. In this study, data from a total of 5537 males and females who are aged 20 years and older were analyzed using logistic modeling of the complex weighted survey design. R version 3.6.3 software was used to conduct the analyses. Four species of urinary PAHs, including the third quantiles of 1-hydroxynaphthalene [odds ratio (OR): 2.327, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.961-5.632], 2-hydroxynaphthalene [OR: 2.449, 95% CI: 1.067-5.622], and 3-hydroxyfluorene [OR: 2.289, 95% CI: 1.077-4.861] and the second quantiles of 3-hydroxyfluorene [OR: 2.201, 95% CI: 1.115, 4.346] and 1-hydroxypyrene [OR: 2.066, 95% CI: 1.037, 4.114], showed a positive correlation with increased odds of stroke. Among metals, the third (3rd) [OR: 3.566, 95% CI: 1.370, 9.280] and fourth (4th) [OR: 2.844, 95% CI: 0.947, 8.543] quantiles of urinary manganese showed a positive correlation with increased odds of stroke., (© 2023. Persistent organic pollutants, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, are hazardous trace contaminants frequently observed in food ingredients, such as edible oils. This study aimed to measure PAHs in forty brands of edible oils marketed in southwest Iran. Additionally, we characterized the daily intake of MOE and ILCR using Monte Carlo simulation. To analyze the content of PAHs, the liquid-liquid extraction method followed by GC-MS was utilized. The average concentration of PAHs was mostly lower than the maximum value for individual PAH (2 μg/Kg); however, the average concentration of fluorene (3.86 μg/Kg) and benzo(a)anthracene (3.13 μg/Kg) was more than the permitted level. The highest residual concentrations of PAHs were mostly observed in canola and corn oils. The daily intake of BaP and 4-PAH for 95% of consumers was 0.01 ng/kg BW/day and 0.04 ng/kg BW/day, respectively. Also, MOE was more than 10,000 for the percentiles of 5%, 50%, and 95%. The modeled ILCR showed that consumption of oil does not currently pose a cancer risk for Iranian consumers due to PAHs exposure. During the last 20 years, the association between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and health risk has become one of the hotspots in the fields of public health and the environment. A bibliometric study of 1392 research articles retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) published between 2002 and 2021 was performed to give an in-depth statistical evaluation of research progress and future trends on PAHs and health risk (PHR). According to the findings, the annual output of significant scientific papers increased exponentially. China ranked first among the 86 nations in terms of the number of publications (NP), followed by the USA and India. Logistic regression analysis showed that there was a positive relationship between the second tertile of 180-day usage count (AOR = 1.62; 95% CI: 1.16-2.26) and increased odds of open access publishing after adjustment for the confounders, indicating that open access papers on PHR were more preferred over the preceding 6 months than non-open access articles. The most popular terms were "PAHs," "risk assessment," and "source identification." According to the bibliometric study, the research hotspots that require more exploration include identifying PAH sources in media such as soil, water, dust, and food and evaluating their linkages to health hazards using appropriate risk models. Understanding the environmental behavior, bioavailability, and health concerns of PAHs and their derivatives in various media is critical for environmental and public health protection. Associations and dose-response relationships between different kinds of urine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) metabolites and lung functions in general American adults were unknown. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database of the 2009-2012 cycles were used. The independent variables were urine PAHs adjusted for urine creatinine, including 1-hydroxynaphthalene (1-NAP), 2-hydroxynaphthalene (2-NAP), 3-hydroxyfluorene (3-FLU), 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-FLU), 3-hydroxyphenanthrene (3-PHE), 1-hydroxyphenanthrene (1-PHE), 2-hydroxyphenanthrene (2-PHE), 1-hydroxypyrene (1-PYR), and 9-hydroxyfluorene (9-FLU). The dependent variables were lung function indices including the forced vital capacity (FVC), the 1st second of a forceful exhalation (FEV 1 ), the ratio of FEV 1 /FVC, the forced expiratory flow rate 25-75% (FEF 25%-75% ), and the fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO). Multivariate linear regression analyses and the restricted cubic splines were used. Except for 1-PHE and 9-FLU, FEF 25%-75% decreased in quartile (Q) 4 of all the remaining seven PAHs; FEV 1 decreased in Q4 of 2-NAP, 3-PHE, 2-PHE, and 9-FLU, with β (SE) of -121.89 (45.46), -105.21 (33.57), -143.67 (40.60), and -127.71 (37.14), respectively. FVC decreased only in Q3 of 9-FLU, with β (SE) of -142.24 (56.54); FEV 1 /FVC decreased in Q4 of all PAHs except for 2-FLU. Besides, FENO decreased in Q4 of all PAHs in smokers, while in non-smokers, the results were opposite. The dose-response relationships were non-linear. In conclusion, we found that urine PAHs may relate to the changes in lung functions. Besides, smoking status had a significant influence on FENO; FENO decreased in smokers while increased in non-smokers, suggesting that PAHs exposure may relate to airway inflammation., (© 2021.
