Abstract

The article examines groundwater quality management in India. According to the authors, India faced two major challenges in the 20th century, which included the provision of food for an increasing population and decreasing the burden of water-borne diseases, such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. They cite the establishment of the Environmental Hygiene Committee by India's government to address the challenge of water-borne disease, which included the provision of potable water to most of India's population within a 40-year time period. An overview of India's utilization of its groundwater resources to meet agriculture and domestic water needs, groundwater quality, and groundwater contaminants, including bacteria and fluoride, is presented.
