3. Multidimensional gas chromatographic analysis of toxaphene

Abstract

Analysis of a technical toxaphene mixture and several biological samples using multidimensional gas chromatography shows that the major peaks present in the chromatograms consist of two to 10 congeners. Toxaphene, which is found in the aquatic environment with a widespread, worldwide distribution was deemed difficult to analyze due to its complex character. Findings show the inappropriateness, in most cases, of single-column chromatography for a congener-specific determination of toxaphene congeners.

4. Determination of polychlorinated terphenyls in aquatic biota and sediment with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry using negative chemical ionization

Abstract

The presence of polychlorinated terphenyls (PCT) in aquatic biota and sediments was investigated by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry using negative chemical ionization. The results showed that total PCT concentrations ranged from 0.28 micrograms/kg of wet weight in biota. Hexachloroterphenyls were the major group. In sediments, PCT concentrations ranged from 22 to 100 micrograms/kg of wet weight.

Abstract

A study was conducted on the removal of polychlorinated biphenyls and other organochlorine compounds from yellow eels under natural conditions. Results showed that elimination half-lives are in the order of years. Higher chlorinated chlorobiphenyls did not show signs of elimination during an eight-year period. It was determined that using eels as biomonitors is an important option for passive biological monitoring. It was also concluded that reducing contamination levels through depuration in clear water is not viable for commercial eel fisheries.
