Abstract

Researchers have devised a statistical method of testing the persistence of an organic pollutant in the environment. Uses of this method extend beyond the chemical, energy, and agriculture industries to include the government agencies that regulate them. Four approaches were developed. The, lindane, dieldrin, hexachlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride, cyclohexane, and dioxin were tested using these analytical methods. The chemicals were chosen, as they had been studied by others. So, the method could be compared.

Abstract

A two-compartment dynamic framework, based on the uncertainty and diversity of environmental systems, was used to evaluate the deposition of air emissions in soil. By analyzing the global mass equilibrium of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans, it was shown that the presence of landscape properties account for the differences in deposition and source emissions. It was also revealed that using the lower bound values of deposition velocity, vapor pressure and atmospheric thickness yields lesser discrepancies in measurements.

Abstract

This study determined the body burden of PBDEs in 100 California children, and evaluated associations with sociodemographic, household, and dietary factors. In national and international comparisons, California dust, breast milk, and human serum samples contain higher concentrations of PBDEs. Higher levels in children suggest exposure pathways depend upon age. Plasma samples were analyzed for PBDEs using GC/MS. Circulating levels of PBDEs were 10-to 1000-fold higher than similar aged populations in Mexico and Europe, 5-times higher than similar aged children across the U.S., and 2- to 10-fold higher than U.S. adults. Increased levels of higher-brominated congeners were associated with the recent purchase of new upholstered furniture or mattresses and consumption of pork. Concentrations of lower-brominated congeners increased with frequency of poultry consumption.
