The effects of mixtures of nanoparticles (NPs) and other chemicals have been poorly studied in terrestrial invertebrates. In this study, we investigated the effects of binary mixtures of goethite (α-FeOOH) NPs and metallic (Cd and Pb) or organic (chlorpyrifos, CPF) contaminants in Eisenia andrei earthworms. We used the filter paper contact test to evaluate (i) the uptake of NPs in organisms exposed to the mixtures of NPs+Metals and NPs+CPF and (ii) the potential effects of the mixture of NPs+CPF on the CPF-induced inhibition of the biomarker enzymes acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and carboxylesterases (CES). We used the artificial soil test to deepen the study on joint effects of NPs+CPF. All compounds were applied separately and in binary mixtures. In the single exposure treatment, Fe levels decreased significantly in organisms exposed to NPs on filter paper, suggesting systemic effects aimed at eliminating Fe incorporated through NPs. Conversely, earthworms exposed to binary mixtures showed Fe levels similar (NPs+Metals) to or higher (NPs+CPF) than controls. The earthworms single exposed to NPs presented no changes in AChE and CES activities. In the artificial soil test, the only treatment that showed AChE inhibition after 72 h was single CPF exposure, while no significant changes were observed in CES activity. However, after 7-day exposure in artificial soil or 72-h exposure on filter paper, the mixture of NPs+CPF induced a similar degree of AChE and CES inhibition as single CPF exposure. All these suggested that NPs did not produce neurotoxic effects, and that the inhibition of the enzymes' activities in all cases was due to the presence of the pesticide. On the other hand, the differences in the pattern of Fe accumulation in the earthworms indicate that the presence of other contaminants in the exposure media can modify the uptake and/or the excretion of Fe and evidence the interactions that may be found in binary mixtures of metal oxide NPs and other pre-existing contaminants in the soil ecosystem. The compound pollutants formed by microplastics and cadmium present a significant potential threat to the soil-based ecosystem, and it is urgent to carry out relevant ecotoxicological studies. However, the lack of appropriate test methods and scientific mathematical analysis models has restricted the progress of research. Based on an orthogonal test design, a ternary combined stress test was performed to study the effect of microplastics and cadmium on earthworms. This study used the particle size and concentration of microplastics as well as the concentration of cadmium as test factors. Using the improved factor analysis model and the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method, a new model was constructed according to the response surface methodology to analyze the acute toxic effects on earthworms under the combined stress of microplastics and cadmium. In addition, the model was tested in a soil-polluted environment. The results show that the model can perfectly integrate the spatiotemporal cross effects of the concentration and time of the applied stress, and the scientific data analysis process ensures the efficient development of ecotoxicological research in the actual compound pollution environment. Moreover, the results of the filter paper test and soil test showed that the equivalent toxicity ratio of cadmium concentration, microplastic concentration, and microplastic particle size to earthworms as 26:35:39 and 23:36:41, respectively. In terms of the interaction effect, a certain positive interaction was observed between the cadmium concentration and that of the microplastics and their particle size, while a negative interaction was observed between the concentration of microplastics and their particle size. Dietary intake of selenium (Se)-enriched rice has benefit for avoiding Se-deficient disease, but there is a risk of excessive cadmium (Cd) intake. Through hydroponic culture and adsorption-desorption experiments, this paper focused on Se and Cd uptake in rice seedlings associated with the interactive effects of Se (Se4+ or Se6+), Cd, and iron (Fe) plaque. The formation of Fe plaque was promoted by Fe2+ and inhibited by Cd but not related with Se species. Shoot Se (Se4+ or Se6+) uptake was not affected by Fe plaque in most treatments, except that shoot Se concentrations were decreased by Fe plaque when Se4+ and Cd co-exposure. Shoot Cd concentrations were always inhibited by Fe plaque, regardless of Se species. Inhibiting Cd adsorption onto root surface (Se4+ + Cd) or increased Cd retention in Fe plaque (Se6+ + Cd) is an important mechanism for Fe plaque to reduce Cd uptake by rice. However, we found that DCB Cd concentrations (Cd adsorbed by Fe plaque) were not always positively correlated with Fe plaque amounts and always negatively correlated with the distribution ratios of Cd mass in root to that in Fe plaque (abbreviated as DRCMRF; r = − 0.942**); meanwhile, with the increase of DCB Fe concentration, the directions of variations of DCB Cd concentration and DRCMRF were affected by Se species. It indicated that the root system is also an important factor to affect DCB Cd concentration and inhibit Cd uptake, which is mediated by Se species. Due to the different physical and chemical properties such as surface charge and ion morphology between As(V) and Cd(II), it is challenging to remove As(V) and Cd(II), especially at low concentrations. This study constructed a novel three-dimension nanocomposite adsorbent Mg/Al/Fe-CLDH (CFMA) by "hydrothermal + calcination method". And different initial concentration ratios (Cd: As=1: 2, 1: 1, 2: 1) were used to investigate the removal performance of CFMA for Cd(II) and As(V). When the concentration ratio Cd: As=1: 2, the residual concentrations of As(V) and Cd(II) were 8.7 μg/L and 4.2 μg/L, respectively, which met the drinking water standard; In the co-adsorption system, As(V) and Cd(II) influence each other's adsorption behavior due to the anionic bridge and shielding effect of As(V) on Cd(II), As(V) gradually changed from monolayer adsorption to multi-layer adsorption dominant, while Cd(II) gradually changed from multi-layer adsorption to monolayer adsorption dominant. Cadmium (Cd) is a transition metal and hazardous pollutant that has many toxic effects on plants. This heavy metal poses a health risk for both humans and animals. The cell wall is the first structure of a plant cell that is in contact with Cd; therefore, it can change its composition and/or ratio of wall components accordingly. This paper investigates the changes in the anatomy and cell wall architecture of maize (Zea mays L.) roots grown for 10 days in the presence of auxin indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and Cd. The application of IBA in the concentration 10−9 M delayed the development of apoplastic barriers, decreased the content of lignin in the cell wall, increased the content of Ca2+ and phenols, and influenced the composition of monosaccharides in polysaccharide fractions when compared to the Cd treatment. Application of IBA improved the Cd2+ fixation to the cell wall and increased the endogenous concentration of auxin depleted by Cd treatment. The proposed scheme from obtained results may explain the possible mechanisms of the exogenously applied IBA and its effects on the changes in the binding of Cd2+ within the cell wall, and on the stimulation of growth that resulted in the amelioration of Cd stress. Cadmium pollution turns out to be a global environmental problem. This study conducted a quantitative and qualitative bibliometric analysis based on 9188 research items from the Web of Science Core Collection published in the last 20 years (2000–2020), presenting an in-depth statistical investigation of global freshwater cadmium research progress and developing trend. Our results demonstrated that the researchers from China, the USA, and India contribute the most to this field. The primary sources of cadmium are mining, industry, wastewater, sedimentation, and agricultural activities. In developing countries, cadmium exposure occurs mainly through the air, freshwater, and food. Fish and vegetables are the main food sources of cadmium for humans because of their high accumulation capability. Source evaluation, detection, and remediation represent the main technologies used to clean up cadmium-contaminated sites. To mitigate the risk of cadmium contamination in freshwater, biomarker-based cadmium monitoring methods and integrated policies/strategies to reduce cadmium exposure merit further concern. The remediation of cadmium (Cd)–contaminated soil has gained much attention recently because Cd in soil threatens human health through the food chain. Although tremendous progress has been made in the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil in rice acid soil system, the mechanism and effects of Cd-contaminated soil remediation under these amendments in wheat weak alkaline soil are still limited. In this study, the remediation effect and related mechanism of Cd in weakly alkaline soil were carried out using zeolite, diatomite, and sodium bentonite as the main remediation components, supplemented by calcium dihydrogen phosphate and fulvic acid. The results of field experiments showed that the concentration of Cd reduced by 27.3 ~ 31.2% in rhizosphere soil and 34.3 ~ 54.2% in non-rhizosphere soil, and the maximum reduction rate of Cd concentration in wheat grain was 25.5%. The main factors affecting the concentration of Cd in wheat grains include the change in exchangeable Cd, the absorption capacity of wheat root, and the inhibitory effect on Cd transport from stem to grain in this paper. Heavy metal pollution has become a global problem, which affect more and more crop yields. Melatonin (MT) is widely used in plant stress resistance to alleviate the toxicity caused by heavy metals and other stresses. In this paper, the effects of exogenous 50 μM and 100 μM MT on the growth and development of naked oat seedlings under cadmium stress (25 mg L−1) were studied. The results showed that different concentrations of MT could promote the growth of naked oat seedlings under 25-mg L−1 cadmium stress. The application of exogenous melatonin could significantly increase the plant height, fresh weight, dry weight, chlorophyll, and proline contents of naked oats. MT could also reduce the contents of hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion, and malondialdehyde in the cells of naked oat seedlings, and increase the activities of SOD, POD, and CAT. In addition, exogenous melatonin could affect the gene expression of LOX, POX, and Asmap1 in MAPK family and NAC and WRKY1 in TFS family in naked oat seedlings, thus promoting the growth and development of naked oat seedlings. In conclusion, this study is the first to demonstrate that MT is able to alleviate the negative effects to treat naked oat seedlings with cadmium stress. Regulating soil pH becomes a crucial practice to alleviate cadmium (Cd) contamination. However, little is known about the threshold of soil pH for the safe production of rice at various soil Cd levels. In this paper, the relationships between soil pH values and the contents of available Cd extracted by calcium chloride (CaCl2-Cd) in neutral and acidic soils were studied by mandatory acidification with H+ addition or neutralization with lime at various soil Cd levels. The results showed that the soil CaCl2-Cd contents dramatically decreased with increasing soil pH, and a logarithmic function could well describe the relations of soil CaCl2-Cd contents and soil pH at constant total Cd (CaCl2-Cd model). The Cd contents in rice grain (grain-Cd) in relation to soil CaCl2-Cd was further established through modified rice pot experiments. A model for the prediction of Cd content in rice grains (grain-Cd model) was set up, though which the grain-Cd content could be predicted based on soil pH and total Cd content. 122 data pairs of rice grain-Cd contents obtained at various soil total Cd contents and pH were employed from the literature to verify the reliability of the established model, approximately 95.08% of those data favorably located within the 1:1 line ± 0.5 unit area of the grain-Cd model. Notably, this model can be applied to determine the thresholds of soil pH at a specific Cd pollution level. For instance, to achieve a rice grain-Cd contents matching the Chinese national food safety limit of 0.2 mg kg−1, the soil pH thresholds were estimated to be 5.05, 5.70, and 6.02 at soil Cd contents of 0.3, 0.6, and 0.8 mg kg−1, respectively. The aim of this paper is to investigate the associations of lead and cadmium exposure with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The prospective cohort study included participants with T2D (n = 7420 for blood lead; n = 5113 for blood cadmium) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III and NHANES 1999–2014. Death outcomes were ascertained through linkage with the National Death Index records. The geometric mean (interquartile range) concentrations of blood lead and cadmium were 19.6 (11.8, 35.0) μg/L and 0.39 (0.21, 0.60) μg/L, respectively. During 72,279 and 37,017 person-years of followup, 2818 all-cause deaths (including 832 CVD deaths) for blood lead and 1237 all-cause deaths (including 319 CVD deaths) for blood cadmium were documented, respectively. Comparing extreme quartiles, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of all-cause mortality were 1.51 (1.25, 1.82) for blood lead (Ptrend < 0.001) and 1.58 (1.22, 2.03) for blood cadmium (Ptrend < 0.001); and the HRs (95% CIs) of CVD mortality were 2.27 (1.54, 3.34) for blood lead (Ptrend < 0.001) and 1.78 (1.04, 3.03) for blood cadmium (Ptrend = 0.07). In the joint analysis, compared with participants in the lowest tertiles of blood lead and cadmium, participants in the highest tertiles had a HR (95% CI) of 2.09 (1.35, 3.24) for all-cause mortality. Exposure to lead and cadmium alone or in combination was significantly associated with higher risk of mortality among patients with T2D. Environmental contaminants do not often occur as individual chemicals but rather in complex mixtures whose joint effects can create a strong toxicity to surrounding organisms. To determine the combined harmful effects of siduron (herbicide) and cadmium (heavy metal) toward Eisenia fetida earthworms, samples of worm's coelomocytes were subjected to siduron and cadmium (Cd) at sublethal concentrations (lower than LC)-siduron 0, 0.8, 2.4, and 7.2 μg cm Cd 0, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 μg cm in filter paper contact assay, both as individual compounds and combinations. The CI-isobologram model was utilized to reveal the types of toxicological interactions between siduron and cadmium in inducing DNA damage toward earthworms. The results indicated that tail DNA percentage (TDNA %) at individual siduron and cadmium concentrations (with the exception of the lowest concentration of Cd 0.04 μgcm) were highly significant compared to those of the control ( p < 0.01). Tail moments (TM) at individual Cd concentrations (0.8 and 1.6 μg cm) were highly significant compared to those of the control ( p < 0.05), while the increase of TM for individual siduron was only significant ( p < 0.05) at 7.2 μg cm which is the highest dose/concentration of siduron used in this study. The combinations of siduron and Cd indicated a significant synergism (CI < 1) at the lower effect levels and a significant antagonism (CI > 1) at the higher effect levels. Meta-analysis with high-quality studies can provide superior evidence. In this paper, we use meta-analysis to analyze the relationship between cadmium (Cd) content in semen and male infertility, and then objectively evaluate the effect of Cd on sperm quality. The objectives of this study were to update our understanding of infertility and to provide evidence to treat and prevent the infertility. We searched potentially relevant studies that were published from establishing database data to April 2018. Articles came from the databases of CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, PubMed, CMCI, and EMBASE. A total of 11 articles were included. We gathered the mean and variance of the infertility group and the control group to compare the Cd content in two groups. In total, the 11 studies include 1707 subjects, 1093 of which were in the infertility group and 614 of which were in the control group. We can get some information from this meta-analysis: SMD = 0.50 (95% Cl 0.39-0.61), Z = 8.92, P < 0.05; the funnel plot of the meta-analysis shows incomplete symmetry, which may have the publication bias. This paper presents an experimental study on continuous adsorptive removal of Cd2+ from the water body using a bio-nanocomposite hydrogel within a fixed-bed column (FBC) system. The bio-nanocomposite hydrogel was synthesized based on starch grafted poly(acrylic acid) (St-g-PAA) reinforced by cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The effects of processing conditions including pH, flow rate, and initial concentration of Cd2+ on adsorption efficiency were examined. Based on the results, the highest removal efficiency was achieved to be 82.5% at pH of 5, initial concentration of 10 mg L−1, and flow rate of 5 mL min−1. Furthermore, by applying isotherm models, it was uncovered that the Langmuir isotherm model was the most appropriate one, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 40.65 mg g−1. Also, an adsorption process was carried out using the FBC system, and the outcome data were processed using Thomas and Yoon–Nelson models to find the characteristics of the column. In this study, the recovering capacity of the exhausted hydrogel was evaluated. Desorption process efficiencies of batch and continuous operations were obtained to be 91.9% and 90%, respectively. This study aimed to evaluate the silicon (Si) capacity to attenuate the cadmium (Cd) effects on seed germination and seedling performance of lettuce. The seeds were subjected to three priming levels: without priming, hydropriming, and Si priming. Afterwards, the seeds were placed to germinate on paper moistened with the absence (0 mM) and presence (1 mM) of Cd. Seeds exposed to Cd showed the same percentage of germination verified in seeds unexposed to this metal (99%). Si priming increases 16% the germination speed of seeds not exposed to Cd and promoted greater expression of esterase during seed germination. However, Cd promoted the decrease of the intensity of esterase and acid phosphatase expression, regardless of the seed priming technique used. Although it does not influence the germination percentage of lettuce seeds, Cd markedly reduced the dry weight of seedlings. This harmful effect caused by the Cd was 33% minimized with Si priming. In addition to the lower weight, Cd induced a significant reduction in antioxidant activity in seedlings. However, Si seed priming caused a greater antioxidant activity—with emphasis on catalase—and, consequently, less lipid peroxidation. In this paper, folic acid–coated graphene oxide nanocomposite (FA-GO) is used as an adsorbent for the treatment of heavy metals including cadmium (Cd2+) and copper (Cu2+) ions. As such, graphene oxide (GO) is modified by folic acid (FA) to synthesize FA-GO nanocomposite and characterized by the atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and C/H/N elemental analyses. Also, computational intelligence tests are used to study the mechanism of the interaction of FA molecules with GO. Based on the results, FA molecules formed a strong π-π stacking, chemical, and hydrogen bond interactions with functional groups of GO. Main parameters including pH of the sample solution, amounts of adsorbent, and contact time are studied and optimized by the Response Surface Methodology Based on Central Composite Design (RSM-CCD). In this study, the equilibrium of adsorption is appraised by two (Langmuir and Freundlich and Temkin and D-R models) and three parameter (Sips, Toth, and Khan models) isotherms. Based on the two parameter evaluations, Langmuir and Freundlich models have high accuracy according to the R2 coefficient (more than 0.9) in experimental curve fittings of each pollutant adsorption. But, multilayer adsorption of each contaminant onto the FA-GO adsorbent (Freundlich equation) is demonstrated by three parameter isotherm analysis. Also, isotherm calculations express maximum computational adsorption capacities of 103.1 and 116.3 mg g−1 for Cd2+ and Cu2+ ions, correspondingly. Kinetic models are scrutinized and the outcomes depict the adsorption of both Cd2+ and Cu2+ followed by the pseudo-second-order equation. Meanwhile, the results of the geometric model illustrate that the variation of adsorption and desorption rates do not have any interfering during the adsorption process. In this paper, a total of 62,712 aquatic product samples were collected from 32 provinces of China during 2015–2017. By analyzing the spatial distributions and non-parametric tests of five heavy metals (lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and arsenic (As)) in four aquatic product (fish (n = 44,353), shrimp (n = 8453), crab (n = 5367), and shellfish (n = 4539)), it was found that the concentrations of the five heavy metals in the same aquatic product are significantly different in different regions. Furthermore, we calculated daily estimated intake (EDI) of each of the five heavy metals and assessed non-cancer risk and cancer risk using target hazard quotient (THQ) and target cancer risk (TR), respectively. The results showed that for mean exposure levels, the THQ values in four aquatic products were all below one, meaning that there was no non-carcinogenic risk. For high exposure levels, the hazard index (HI) value exceeded one in fish in North China, which means the potential non-carcinogenic risk should not be ignored. As for cadmium, most of the TR values in crab and shellfish exceed 1 × 10−4 in North China, East China, and South China. For chromium, except for Northeast China, the TR values in fish in other regions exceed 1 × 10−4; it indicated that the cancer risk caused by cadmium or chromium should not be ignored. Soil cadmium (Cd) pollution has received increasing attention from scholars. In the field of Cd pollution remediation, there is an urgent need to study the combined bioremediation technology of earthworms and microbes. In this paper, a short-term stress test and a long-term stress test were conducted. Eisenia fetida were inoculated into artificial soil that was contaminated with Cd. After different Cd stress times, the regulation process between the microbial communities in the earthworms and in the soil was studied. Canonical correlation analysis and the TOPSIS method were combined to establish a mathematical model for data analysis, and the changes in the carbon source utilization intensity by microbes were analysed. The results showed that in the short-term stress tests, the regulation process could be divided into five stages. Specifically, after 1–3 days of stress, the microbial community in the earthworms regulated the soil microbial community, but on the 3rd day, the regulation was weakened. On the 4th day, the soil microbial community was affected not only by the microbes in the earthworms but also by the increasing intensity of Cd stress. After 5 days of stress, the microbial communities in the earthworms and the soil were both greatly affected by Cd poisoning, and the microbes transitioned from stable to declining. At 6–7 days, the microbes in the earthworms gained control over those in the soil once again, and the Cd-tolerant microbes began to appear and proliferate. At 8–10 days, the regulation of the soil microbes by the earthworm microbes weakened, while the Cd-tolerant population in the soil microbial communities gradually evolved at this stage to adapt to the increasing Cd stress. The long-term stress tests showed that the difference between the microbial communities in the soil and in the earthworms increased, and there was almost no regulation between them. Agricultural wastes have promising potential for the production of low-cost and sustainable adsorbents for heavy metals, while the characteristics of those biosorbents and the stability of the passivated heavy metals under natural conditions need to be studied further. In this paper, the oilseed rape plant after seed harvesting was divided into three parts: root (RT), stem (ST), and pod (PD). The isotherm adsorption of cadmium (Cd(II)) on the biomass was conducted. In practice, the biomass was aged in the Cd(II)-contaminated soil, and the concentration of Cd(II) in the leachate was measured after the continuous eluent of typical acid rain. The components and elements of the biomass were determined for the analysis of the differences between the immobilization abilities of the biomass. Results showed the CC (corn cob, as a comparison), ST, RT, and PD had the adsorption capacities of 6.34, 7.58, 9.22, and 9.87 mg/g for Cd(II) through the Langmuir fitting of the isothermal adsorption experiments, respectively. The leached Cd(II) were reduced 1063, 2073, 2824, and 3621 μg by CC, ST, RT, and PD biomass aging, respectively. Compared that by CC, the immobilization differences between the biomass in soil were much greater than that in isotherm adsorption, indicating the biosorption ability of rape biomass was enlarged during the 30 days of aging. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur contents showed sequences as pod>root>stem and had high correlations with the reduced amount of leached Cd(II), which indicated protein might be beneficial for the enhancement of adsorption/immobilization in the soil. Cadmium (Cd) contamination in soil has become the focus of widespread concern in society today. In this paper, with Eisenia fetida as research subjects, an indoor simulation experiment was conducted. A BIOLOG microplate technique was used to determine the carbon source (single-carbon) utilization of the microbial communities in the contaminated soil and earthworms under Cd stress. Contour line analysis was used for the first time to study the difference of carbon source metabolism in microbial communities. And the effects of Cd stress on the functional diversity of the microbial communities and the detoxification mechanism in earthworms were researched. With two test groups, a short-term test and the long-term test were performed. The former test lasted for 10 days, with the removal of an earthworm every day for analysis; the latter test lasted for 30 days, with the removal of an earthworm every 10 days. The Cd2+ concentration was set at 0, 50, 100, 125, 250, or 500 mg kg−1 dry weight, and 10 earthworms were inoculated in each concentration treatment. The earthworm homogenate and soil extracts were used to determine the carbon source utilization of the microbial communities. The results show that Cd stress changed the functional diversity of the microbial communities in the soil and earthworms. With the extension of stress time and the increase of stress concentration, earthworms will adjust their own physiological functions (including the microbial community structure and stress mechanism in the body) and regulate the microbial community structure in the external environment to obtain the necessary substances for growth. In addition, 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, γ-hydroxybutyric acid, glutamyl-L-glutamic acid, α-butyric acid, threonine, and α-cyclodextrin were important carbon sources for the earthworms to maintain their normal physiological metabolism under Cd stress. In situ passivation of heavy metals by biochar mainly focuses on the effect of biochar's pH, surface oxygen-containing functional groups (OCFGs), and ash content. In this paper, starting with the measurement of biochar's electrical properties under different pyrolysis atmospheres and temperatures, the changes in the zeta potential of biochar and the consequent effects on cadmium immobilization in soil are studied. The results show that the zeta potential of biochar from the pyrolysis of high temperature (800 °C) is higher than that of biochar at low temperatures, so its electronegativity is weaker than that of biochar at low temperatures, but the protective effect on wheat is stronger than that of biochar obtained at low temperatures. The zeta potential of biochar obtained under a CO2 atmosphere was higher than that of biochar prepared under a N2 atmosphere, so its protective effect on wheat was stronger than that of biochar under N2. The reason is that biochar particles with a high zeta potential and weak electronegativity have higher cohesion and are better at in situ passivation of Cd in soils. In this paper, the application of ultrafiltration (UF) technology to treat cadmium (Cd) pollution in surface waters is investigated. The effect of the UF membrane molecular weight cut-off (MWCO), Cd ion (Cd2+) concentration, solution pH and ionic strength on the removal, and mass balance of Cd were explored. In addition, the effect of the solution pH on UF membrane fouling was analyzed. The results indicated that UF membranes with a low MWCO resulted in an improved Cd removal rate. In addition, as the Cd2+ concentration in feedwater increased, the Cd removal rate decreased, while the Cd concentration in the permeate increased. Since the solution pH and ionic strength had a notable impact on the Cd removal rate, a high pH value and low ionic strength led to a higher removal rate of Cd. Under optimal Cd removal conditions, UF reduced the influent Cd concentration from 1.0 to 0.019 mg/L. For membrane fouling, increasing the solution pH led to more serious membrane fouling. This phenomenon was the result of Cd2+ reacting with OH− and forming a Cd (OH)2 precipitate. The precipitate and humic acid formed compact cakes on the membrane surface and blocked membrane pores. These results provided adequate evidence for the higher removal of Cd with increasing solution pH. In addition, SEM images under different pH conditions were in agreement with the conclusion mentioned above, which provided further support for the effect of the solution pH on Cd removal and membrane fouling. Artificial soil simulation tests were conducted to study the response of oxidative stress in different parts of Eisenia fetida under cadmium Cd) stress. Factor analysis and analytic hierarchy process were used to establish a comprehensive mathematical model to screen key monitoring indices of the Cd-contaminated soil early warning system. This paper sets the short-term group and the long-term group. The former lasted 10 days, and the latter was 30 days. Gradient solution of 0, 50, 100, 125, 250, and 500 mg kg−1 Cd2+ was used in each test group. The earthworm was cut into two parts from its clitellum to determine oxidative stress indices. Results showed that during the short-term stress, TP (total protein) in the head tissues of the earthworm was the key monitoring index for 3-4 and 8-9 days of Cd stress. In addition, the TP in tail tissues was the key index for 2, 4, 6, and 8-10 days of stress. On the first and second days, the key monitoring indices in the tail tissues were both the CAT (catalase), while in the head, they were CAT and TP, respectively. On the 5th, the 7th, and the 9th days, the focus should be on monitoring POD (peroxidase) in the tail tissues, while in the head tissues, they were POD, CAT, and TP, respectively. In the long-term test after 10 days of Cd stress, the key monitoring index in head tissues was GPX (glutathione peroxidase), and in the tail, it was TP. Diverse phosphorus-containing materials (PCMs) were widely applied in remediation of cadmium-contaminated soils, and their effects on the change of soil cadmium availability (SCA) varied with their physicochemical characteristics and environmental conditions. Investigation on the effect of various PCMs on reducing SCA under different conditions favors the safe utilization of Cd-contaminated soil. Herein, a meta-analysis of literature published before August 2021 was carried out. A total of 342 independent observations were obtained from 42 published papers which included 9 factors that may affect the passivation effect of fertilizer content: phosphorus type, phosphorus application rate, soil pH, soil CEC, soil organic matter, experiment type, and time. Results of boosted regression tree analysis showed that the application rate is the most important factor contributing to the SCA, followed by soil pH and duration. Results of this meta-analysis showed that medium P input shows potential for reactivating the SCA. Under alkaline soil conditions and high soil CEC values, PCM input can better deactivate SCA. In addition, the difference from the previous understanding is that under the medium input of phosphorus-containing fertilizer (90–500 mg P∙kg−1), it will significantly increase the content of available cadmium in soil. In addition, future recommendation for exploring novel PCMs and suitable strategies for controlling the SCA though PCM application were also proposed. In this paper, we investigate the effect of different biomass pretreatments on metal ion uptake by various biosorbents. Heat-treated as well as caustic-treated and ground biomass of Saccharomyces pastorianus was used to remove copper, lead and cadmium from various solutions. Untreated yeast was used as the control sample. The effect of yeast modification on sorption capacity depended on the different types of heavy metal ions and whether they were in single- or multi-component solutions. The highest uptake of copper and lead from a single-metal solution was obtained from heat-treated cells. Ground biomass was the most efficient at cadmium removal. However, the sorption capacity of the modified biomass did not improve when metal ions were removed from multi-component solutions. Indeed, the results in this paper show that optimizing metal removal from single-cation solutions can lead to decreased sorption capacity in multi-component solutions. Therefore, while adjusting the procedure of biomass modification, not only the nature of the metal ion being sorbed but also the chemical composition of the metal ion solution should be taken into account. Bioaccumulation of five heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn) in six plant organs (panicle, leaf, stem, root, rhizome, and bud) of the emergent and perennial plant species, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, were investigated to estimate the plant’s potential for accumulating heavy metals in the wetlands of Dongting Lake. We found the highest Cd concentrations in the panicles and leaves; while the highest Cu and Mn were observed in the roots, the highest Pb in the panicles, and the highest Zn in the panicles and buds. In contrast, the lowest Cd concentrations were detected in the stem, roots, and buds; the lowest Cu concentrations in the leaves and stems; the lowest Mn concentrations in the panicles, rhizomes, and buds; the lowest Pb concentrations in the stems; and the lowest Zn concentrations in the leaves, stems, and rhizomes. Mean Cu concentration in the plant showed a positive regression coefficient with plot elevation, soil organic matter content, and soil Cu concentration, whereas it showed a negative regression coefficient with soil moisture and electrolyte leakage. Mean Mn concentration showed positive and negative regression coefficients with soil organic matter and soil moisture, respectively. Mean Pb concentration exhibited positive regression coefficient with plot elevation and soil total P concentration, and Zn concentration showed a positive regression coefficient with soil available P and total P concentrations. However, there was no significant regression coefficient between mean Cd concentration in the plant and the investigated environmental parameters. Stems and roots were the main organs involved in heavy metal accumulation from the environment. The mean quantities of heavy metals accumulated in the plant tissues were 2.2 mg Cd, 86.7 mg Cu, 290.3 mg Mn, 15.9 mg Pb, and 307 mg Zn per square meter. In the Dongting Lake wetlands, 0.7 × 103 kg Cd, 22.9 × 103 kg Cu, 77.5 × 103 kg Mn, 3.1 × 103 kg Pb, and 95.9 × 103 kg Zn per year were accumulated by aboveground organs and removed from the lake through harvesting for paper manufacture. In this paper, magnetic ethylene diamine-functionalized graphene oxide (MDFGO) as a novel sorbent was synthesized and applied for removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from real wastewater samples. The morphology and molecular structure of MDFGO were studied by different analytical methods. The effective parameters in adsorption efficiency of Pb(II) and Cd(II) were studied and optimized using experimental design. Under the optimal condition, the effective parameters including pH, sorbent dosage, shaking rate, and adsorption time were 6.2, 33.0 mg, 500 rpm, and 11 min, respectively. Mechanism of adsorption kinetic was investigated using the Lagergren pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models. It was found that adsorption of lead and cadmium ions in the MDFGO sorbent followed from pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS°) for the lead and cadmium ions uptake onto the MDFGO sorbent were calculated and indicated that the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic in nature for both cations. In order to investigate the isotherm model for adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II), the experimental data were studied using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Harkins–Jura isotherm models. The results fitted well with Freundlich model for both metal ions. The new sorbent (MDFGO) was applied to remove Pb(II) and Cd(II) from battery wastewater and electroplating wastewater. The removal percentage of Pb(II) and Cd(II) were 99.6±0.5 and 99.4±0.6, respectively, and demonstrated that the new sorbent was very suitable for removal of lead and cadmium ion from the real wastewater samples. Cadmium is an important environmental contaminant. High consumption of chemical fertilizers and industrial activities in recent decades has caused people to be worried about exposure to cadmium. There is no policy for environmental and biological monitoring of exposure to cadmium in the general population in Iran. This study was aimed to review cadmium content in consuming foods and biological samples in Iran, systematically. We developed a comprehensive search strategy and used it to search on Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, and Scientific Information Database until 28 December 2016. The totals of 285 articles were identified and finally 31 original papers were selected. Cadmium contamination was found in Iranian food groups such as rice, cereal and legumes, canned tuna fish, vegetables, fruit juice, and egg. This study showed that cadmium amount in 75% of the consumed rice samples (domestic and imported) was higher than the maximum limits approved by institute of standards and industrial research of Iran. Lettuce samples in Yazd were recorded the highest concentration of cadmium compared to other studies. In addition, high amount of cadmium was observed in the blood of the general population. Regarding the cadmium contamination in food and blood samples in Iran, policies must be adopted to reduce exposure to cadmium through different matrices as much as possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, cotton stalks (Gossypium barbadense) and date palm stones (Phoenix dactylifera) have been used as biosorbents to remove cadmium; Cd(II), lead; Pb(II), and zinc; Zn(II) from mono- and multi-solutions. Each biosorbent was characterized using SEM-EDX, and FT-IR. The findings showed that pH, dose, contact time, metal concentration, and particle size affect the treatment process. The adsorption pattern was Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Zn(II) for both biosorbents. The adsorption performance of cotton stalks was higher than that of date palm stones. The fitted maximum uptake capacities; qm of cotton stalks were higher than those of date palm stones. The maximum adsorption at optimum conditions of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) with cotton stalks were 98%, 92.1%, and 78.9%, respectively, within 30 min. While the maximum adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Zn(II) with date palm stones were 94.6%, 76%, and 68.6%, respectively. Results confirmed the antagonistic effect of heavy metal removal at optimum conditions. Biosorbents could remove ~ 100% of the metal ions from real wastewater samples. Heavy metal assessment in Dakhla Bay (Atlantic coast) was carried out using different environmental and ecological indices. Heavy metal concentrations were measured using ICP-AES and were compared with consensus-based sediment quality guidelines. The distribution of heavy metal concentrations varies for the three groups: (i) lead distribution is dominated by its associations with copper and chromium. These elements have the same source, most probably related to anthropogenic activities. (ii) Nickel, zinc and cobalt are associated with aluminium and iron indicating their terrigenous origin (natural content), and (iii) cadmium concentration is related to upwelling currents. This paper systematically studied the distributions and pollution levels of heavy metals in sediment in the coastal areas in Dakhla Bay, which is of scientific significance, to discuss the changing rules and the affecting factors of the harmful heavy metals and can be adopted for reference to other coastal areas. The Songhua River represents one of the seven major river systems in China. It flows through Harbin city with 66 km long, locating in the northern China with a longer winter time. This paper aimed to study concentration distributions, stability, risk assessment, and source apportionment of heavy metals including chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and nickel (Ni) in 11 selected sections of the Songhua River Harbin region. Results showed that Cr, Cd, Pb, Hg, and As exceeded their respective geochemical background values in sediments of most monitoring sections. Compared with other important rivers and lakes in China, Cr, Hg, Cd, and As pollutions in surface sediments were above medium level. Further analysis of chemical speciation indicated that Cr and As in surface sediments were relatively stable while Pb and Cd were easily bioavailable. Correlation analysis revealed sources of these metals except As might be identical. Pollution levels and ecological risks of heavy metals in surface sediments presented higher in the mainstream region (45° 47.0′ N ~ 45° 53.3′ N, 126° 37.0′ E ~ 126° 42.1′ E). Source apportionment found Hejiagou and Ashi River were the main contributors to metal pollution of this region. With growing concerns on cadmium (Cd) contamination of rice grain from the public, the mechanism about the uptake and translocation of Cd in rice plant has been widely studied in recent years. However, the study about the effects of future warming on rice Cd accumulation was almost neglected. In the paper, hydroponic experiments of Cd exposure in growth chambers under different growth temperature (asymmetric and symmetric warming) were conducted to investigate how warming influenced Cd uptake and translocation in rice seedlings ( 6 liangyou 9368). The results showed that warming significantly increased Cd accumulation in shoot and root by 62.7 to 122 % and 65.5 to 73.9 %, respectively. Moreover, symmetric warming boosted Cd translocation from root to shoot, while antitranspirant treatment inhibited it significantly. The possible mechanisms may be that warming increased the fine root (diameter ≤ 0.5 mm) surface area and enlarged the active sites on root surface by influencing root morphology growth, thus promoted Cd uptake by root. Meanwhile, warming increased leaf transpiration and boosted the xylem stream from nutrient solution to above organs, thus enhanced Cd translocation. Cadmium (Cd) is one of the main pollutants in paddy fields, and its accumulation in rice ( Oryza sativa L.) and subsequent transfer to food chain is a global environmental issue. This paper reviews the toxic effects, tolerance mechanisms, and management of Cd in a rice paddy. Cadmium toxicity decreases seed germination, growth, mineral nutrients, photosynthesis, and grain yield. It also causes oxidative stress and genotoxicity in rice. Plant response to Cd toxicity varies with cultivars, growth condition, and duration of Cd exposure. Under Cd stress, stimulation of antioxidant defense system, osmoregulation, ion homeostasis, and over production of signaling molecules are important tolerance mechanisms in rice. Several strategies have been proposed for the management of Cd-contaminated paddy soils. One such approach is the exogenous application of hormones, osmolytes, and signaling molecules. Moreover, Cd uptake and toxicity in rice can be decreased by proper application of essential nutrients such as nitrogen, zinc, iron, and selenium in Cd-contaminated soils. In addition, several inorganic (liming and silicon) and organic (compost and biochar) amendments have been applied in the soils to reduce Cd stress in rice. Selection of low Cd-accumulating rice cultivars, crop rotation, water management, and exogenous application of microbes could be a reasonable approach to alleviate Cd toxicity in rice. This paper analyses the capacity of the rape ( Brassica napus) to extract Cd and Zn from the soil and the effect of these metals on the morphometric parameters of the plant (length, weight, surface area, fractal dimension of leaves). Rape plants were mostly affected by the combined toxicity of the Cd and Zn mixture that caused a significant reduction in the rate of seed germination, the plant biomass quantity and the fractal dimension. In the case of Cd soil pollution, the bioaccumulation factor (BAF), bioaccumulation coefficient (BAC) as well as the heavy metal root-to-stalk translocation factor (TF) were determined. The results showed that B. napus had a great potential as a cadmium hyperaccumulator but not as an accumulator of Zn or Cd + Zn mixture. Cadmium (Cd) concentration in arable soil has drawn broad public attention due to its direct effect on Cd concentration in food. However, there have been few studies of surveying Cd accumulation on the national scale in China. This paper collected 486 studies of Cd concentrations in Chinese arable soil. The results showed that the average Cd concentration was 0.27 mg/kg, higher than its background value, indicating that Cd had been introduced into arable soil by human activity. The Cd concentrations in areas of mining and smelting, urban areas, and areas irrigated by wastewater were obviously higher than that in remote areas. Spatially, Cd concentrations were lower in the north than those in the south, and many hotspots existed throughout China due to mining and smelting activities. This paper investigates the adsorption characteristics of palm oil boiler mill fly ash (POFA) derived from an agricultural waste material in removing Cd(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution via column studies. The performance of the study is described through the breakthrough curves concept under relevant operating conditions such as column bed depths (1, 1.5, and 2 cm) and influent metal concentrations (5, 10, and 20 mg/L). The Cd(II) and Cu(II) uptake mechanism is particularly bed depth- and concentration-dependant, favoring higher bed depth and lower influent metal concentration. The highest bed capacity of 34.91 mg Cd(II)/g and 21.93 mg Cu(II)/g of POFA was achieved at 20 mg/L of influent metal concentrations, column bed depth of 2 cm, and flow rate of 5 mL/min. The whole breakthrough curve simulation for both metal ions were best described using the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models, but it is apparent that the initial region of the breakthrough for Cd(II) was better described using the BDST model. The results illustrate that POFA could be utilized effectively for the removal of Cd(II) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution in a fixed-bed column system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we examined Cd accumulation and PC synthesis in two clones of Dittrichia viscosa, one with a metallicolous (DV-A) and the other with a non-metallicolous origin (DV-W). The clones were cultured in vitro with 0 and 10 mg Cd L in both short-term treatments (up to 72 h) and over 10 days. We also examined the influence of the culture medium dilution and the PC-synthesis inhibitor, l-buthionine-sulfoximine (BSO), on these parameters. Similar Cd accumulation values were found in the two clones. No synthesis of new thiolic compounds was observed in Cd-treated plants cultured in vitro in Murashige and Skoog medium up to 72 h when compared to controls. Dilution of the culture medium affected PC production, increasing it in 1/2 MS and especially in 1/4 MS. Cd uptake did not increase in the same way, but still hyperaccumulation levels were exceeded in all Cd treatments. BSO addition increased the sensitivity of D. viscosa to Cd and diminished Cd accumulation. Nevertheless, a poor correlation between PCs and Cd accumulation capacity was observed since the highest Cd content did not correspond to the highest PC levels. All these results obtained suggest that PCs are important in Cd accumulation and detoxification in D. viscosa and also that other mechanisms might be involved in these traits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, increasing awareness of the environmental impact of heavy metals has prompted a demand for monitoring and decontaminating industrial wastes prior to discharging into natural water bodies. This paper describes the preparation and electrochemical application of carbon paste electrode modified with nanocellulosic fibers for the determination of cadmium and lead in water samples using anodic stripping voltammetry. First, cadmium and lead were adsorbed on the carbon paste electrode surface at open circuit potential, followed by anodic stripping voltammetric scan from -1 to 0 V. Different factors affecting sensitivity and precision of the electrode, including accumulating solvent, pH of the accumulating solvent, accumulation time, supporting electrolyte, and scan rate were investigated. The proposed method was also applied to the determination of Cd (II) and Pb (II) in the presence of other interfering metal ions and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and Triton X-100 as a representative of cationic, anionic, and neutral surfactants. Linear calibration curves were obtained in the concentration ranges of 150-650 μg L and 80-300 μg L, respectively, for cadmium and lead at an accumulated time of 10 min with limits of detection 88 and 33 μg L. Optimized working conditions are defined as acetate buffer of pH 5 as accumulating solvent, hydrochloric acid as supporting electrolyte, and scan rate 50 mV/s. This technique does not use mercury and therefore has a positive environmental benefit. Lignocellulosic biomass ash (BA) has certain adsorption and passivation effects on heavy metals, but its function is generally weak. Amino acid salt can facilitate the leaching of heavy metals in soil. Therefore, modification of BA with amino acid salt may realize a higher leaching rate and better passivation of heavy metals in soil. In this study, BA was modified by amino acid hydrolysate obtained from the hydrolysis of chicken feathers by sulfuric acid. The physicochemical properties of BA and modified BA (MBA), their effects on Chinese cabbage (CC) yield and nutritional quality, and passivation effects on soil cadmium (Cd) were compared, and the related mechanisms were investigated. SEM-EDS, XRD, and FTIR demonstrated that BA was a CaCO3-type soil amendment, while MBA was a CaSO4-type soil amendment with the loading of amino acid. Compared with BA, MBA significantly increased the fresh weight, soluble sugar, vitamin C (Vc), and protein contents of CC in both non-Cd contaminated soil and Cd contaminated soil, and obviously decreased the nitrate content and Cd uptake of CC in Cd-contaminated soil. After the application of MBA, cadmium species in potted soil were transformed from higher plant availability, representing by exchangeable and carbonate-bound, into lower plant availability, representing by iron-manganese oxide bound, which was identified as the key reason for the significant reduction of Cd content in CC under MBA application. The interaction of microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals (HMs) can lead to aggravation of detrimental effects in the plants, animals, and even human beings. Keeping this in view, the present study was designed to assess the combined toxic effects of polyethylene MPs (PE-MPs) and cadmium (Cd) on germination indices and seedling growth of soybean (Glycine max). Particle sizes of 13 and 6.5 μm and six treatments (control, Cd, 6.5 μm PE, 6.5 μm PE + Cd, 13 μm PE, and 13 μm PE + Cd) were set to simulate the effects of PE-MPs and Cd on the growth of soybean when used alone or in combined form. As compared to the control, 6.5 μm PE treatment showed significant effect on most of the germination indices, i.e., decrease in the germination index by 31%, 44% decrease in the vigor index, and 28% decrease in germination rate whereas mean germination time showed no significant differences. Treatment of smaller-size PE-MPs and Cd significantly inhibited both dry and fresh weights. All treatment groups resulted in significant effect on catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase activities of seedlings depicting adverse effects of interaction of PE-MPs and Cd. Our findings demonstrated the phyto-toxicity of PE-MPs and Cd in G. max, and it would lead to serious implications in human beings. Our study is important as it provides preliminary information regarding MP absorption and their accumulation in different levels of food chain. Nanotechnology has attracted the interest of scientists due to its wide range of application specifically in agriculture. Nanoparticles (NPs) may act as a promising materials to alleviate cadmium (Cd) stress in plants. This study aims to assess the impact of multiple nanoparticles including nSiO2 (50 mg L−1:100 mg L−1), nTiO2 (20 mg L−1:60 mg L−1), nZnO (50 mg L−1:100 mg L−1), nFe3O4 (100 mg L−1:200 mg L−1), nCuO (50 mg L−1:100 mg L−1), and nCeO2 (50 mg L−1:100 mg L−1) in combination with CdCl2 (5 µM) to mitigate Cd toxicity in lettuce through foliar application in hydroponic solution. Current findings indicate that foliar application of nSiL + Cd (50 mg L−1), nZnL + Cd (50 mg L−1), and nTiL + Cd (20 mg L−1) is more effective in improving growth, biomass, root architecture, and elevated photosynthetic efficiency, which might be attributed to the increasing uptake of essential micronutrient (K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Zn) under Cd stress. Similarly, treatment with nanoparticles leads to reduced accumulation of ROS and MDA in lettuce, while enhancing the SOD, POD, CAT, and APX activities. The results showed that nanoparticles have high tolerance against Cd as depicted by the inhibition in Cd accumulation by 3.2–58% and 10–72% in roots as well as edible parts of lettuce, respectively. In addition, Cd alone reduces the morphological traits, antioxidant enzyme activity, and photosynthetic activity, while increasing the ROS, MDA, and Cd accumulation in lettuce. This comprehensive study suggests the role of nanoparticles in reducing Cd toxicity in lettuce, signifying their importance as stress mitigation agents. Assessing the effects of heavy metals (HMs) on kidney stone is often limited to analyzing individual metal exposures, with studies on the effects of exposure to mixtures of HMs being scarce. To comprehensively evaluate the relationship between exposure to mixed HMs and kidney stones, we analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007–2016, which included 7809 adults. We used multiple statistical methods, including multiple logistic regression models, weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression, quantile g-computation (qgcomp) and bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), to assess the association between single HM and mixed exposure to HMs and kidney stones. Firstly, in single exposure analysis, urinary cadmium (Cd) and cobalt (Co) demonstrated a positive association with the risk of kidney stones. Secondly, various other approaches consistently revealed that mixed exposure to HMs exhibited a positive association with kidney stone risk, primarily driven by Cd, Co, and barium (Ba) in urine, with these associations being particularly notable among the elderly population. Finally, both BKMR and survey-weighted generalized linear models consistently demonstrated a significant synergistic effect between urinary Co and urinary uranium (Ur) in elevating the risk of kidney stones. Overall, this study provides new epidemiological evidence that mixed exposure to HMs is associated with an increased risk of kidney stones. Cadmium (Cd) and polyethylene (PE) seriously contaminate the aquatic environment and threaten human health. Many studies have reported the toxic effects of Cd and PE on plants, whereas few have reported the combined contamination of these two pollutants. In this study, duckweed (Lemma minor) was used as an indicator to explore the effect of PE microplastics (PE-MPs) at concentrations of 10, 50, 100, 200, and 500 mg/L on tolerance to 1 mg/L Cd. The results showed that different concentrations of PE-MPs inhibited the growth rate and chlorophyll content of duckweed to different degrees, both of which were minimal at 50 mg/L PE-MPs, 0.11 g/d, and 0.32 mg/g, respectively. The highest Cd enrichment (7.77 mg/kg) and bioaccumulation factors (94.22) of duckweed were detected when Cd was co-exposed with 50 mg/L of PE-MPs. Catalase and peroxidase activity first decreased and then increased with increasing PE-MPs concentrations, showing "hormesis effects", with minimum values of 11.47 U/g and 196.00 U/g, respectively. With increasing concentrations of PE-MPs, the effect on superoxide dismutase activity increased and then declined, peaking at 162.05 U/g, and displaying an "inverted V" trend. The amount of malondialdehyde rose with different PE-MPs concentrations. This research lay a foundation for using duckweed to purify water contaminated with MPs and heavy metals. Rapid economic development has increased the accumulation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and heavy metals in aquatic environments. In addition, Microcystis aeruginosa can cause the outbreak of cyanobacteria bloom and can produce microcystin, which poses a threat to human water safety. Therefore, this study analyzed the biochemical and molecular assays of DOM (0, 1, 3, 5, 8, 10 mg C L−1) extracted from four different sources on the toxicity of cadmium (Cd) to M. aeruginosa. The results showed that the addition of different concentrations of DOM from sediment, biochar, and humic acid alleviated the toxicity of Cd to M. aeruginosa. But the addition of rice hulls DOM at high concentrations (8 and 10 mg L−1) significantly reduced the normal growth and metabolic activities of M. aeruginosa. DOM from four different sources promoted the expression level of microcystin-related gene mcyA and the production of microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR), and mcyA was positively correlated with MC-LR. DOM from biochar, sediment, and humic acid were able to bind Cd through complexation. The results will help to understand the toxic effects of heavy metals on toxic-producing cyanobacteria in the presence of DOM, and provide certain reference for the evaluation of water environmental health. The application of waste oyster shell in agriculture is of extensive concern due to its benefits on improving yields and inhibiting cadmium (Cd) accumulation in edible parts of crops. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for oyster shell powder (OSP) that decreases Cd accumulation in crops remain poorly understood. This study explored the effects of OSP on growth and Cd accumulation in rice via pot experiments and hydroponics. Pot experiments showed that the application of 1 g·kg−1 OSP improved rice yields and decreased Cd concentrations in all tissues of rice, especially in grains, which was reduced by 43.5%. The pH was increased and the phytoavailability of Cd in soil was reduced by OSP supplementation. In addition, OSP also exhibited high dissolution of Ca, Fe, Zn, and Se. In hydroponics, OSP supply also suppressed Cd accumulation in rice and increased plant growth. Pretreatment with OSP inhibited the accumulation of Cd in the roots and shoots. Simultaneously, OSP reduced the content of Cd in the root cell sap, cell wall, and xylem sap, and downregulated the expression of OsNramp5, OsNramp1, OsIRT1, and OsHMA2. These findings suggested that the application of OSP could reduce Cd accumulation by inhibiting the expression of genes responsible for Cd absorption and xylem loading in rice. This study aimed to determine the potential protective effects of chrysin (CHR) on experimental cadmium (Cd)-induced lung toxicity in rats. To this end, rats were divided into five groups; Control, CHR, Cd, Cd + CHR25, Cd + CHR50. In the study, rats were treated with CHR (oral gavage, 25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg) 30 min after giving Cd (oral gavage, 25 mg/kg) for 7 consecutive days. The effects of Cd and CHR treatments on oxidative stress, inflammatory response, ER stress, apoptosis and tissue damage in rat lung tissues were determined by biochemical and histological methods. Our results revealed that CHR therapy for Cd-administered rats could significantly reduce MDA levels in lung tissue while significantly increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx) and GSH levels. CHR agent exerted antiinflammatory effect by lowering elevated levels of NF-κB, IL-1β IL-6, TNF-α, RAGE and NRLP3 in Cd-induced lung tissue. Moreover CHR down-regulated Cd-induced ER stress markers (PERK, IRE1, ATF6, CHOP, and GRP78) and apoptosis markers (Caspase-3, Bax) lung tissue. CHR up-regulated the Bcl-2 gene, an anti-apoptotic marker. Besides, CHR attenuated the side effects caused by Cd by modulating histopathological changes such as hemorrhage, inflammatory cell infiltration, thickening of the alveolar wall and collagen increase. Immunohistochemically, NF-κB and Caspase-3 expressions were intense in the Cd group, while these expressions were decreased in the Cd + CHR groups. These results suggest that CHR exhibits protective effects against Cd-induced lung toxicity in rats by ameliorating oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, endoplasmic reticulum stress and histological changes. Modeling plants for biomass production and metal uptake from surrounding environment is strongly dependent on the moisture content of soil. Therefore, experiments were conducted to find out how soil moisture affects the phenotypic traits, photosynthetic efficiency, metabolic profile, and metal accumulation in the hyperaccumulating ecotype of Sedum alfredii (S. alfredii). A total of six water potential gradients were set: 0 ~ −15 kPa (T1), −15 ~ −30 kPa (T2), −30 ~ −45 kPa (T3), −45 ~ −60 kPa (T4), −60 ~ −75 kPa (T5), and −75 ~ −90 kPa (T6). Different water potential treatments had a significant effect on plant growth and metal uptake efficiency. Compared to T3, T2 was more effective in promoting plant growth and development, with an increase in biomass of 23% and 17% in both fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW), respectively. T2 and T3 had the highest cadmium (Cd) content in the shoot (280.2 mg/kg) and (283.3 mg/kg), respectively, whereas T1 had the lowest values (204.7 mg/kg). Cd availability for plants in the soil was affected by moving soil moisture cycles. Changes in soil moisture that were either too high or too low compared to the ideal soil water content for S. alfredii growth resulted in a significant reduction in Cd accumulation in shoots. Tryptophan, phenylalanine, and other amino acids were accumulated in T5, whereas only tryptophan and phenylalanine slightly increased in T1. Sugars and alcohols such as sucrose, trehalose, mannitol, galactinol, and mannobiose increased in T5, while they decreased significantly in T1. Interestingly, in contrast to T1, the two impaired metabolic pathways in T5 (galactose and starch metabolism) were identified to be glucose metabolic pathways. These findings provide scientific information (based on experiments) to improve biomass production and metal uptake efficiency in hyperaccumulating ecotype of S. alfredii for phytoremediation-contaminated agricultural fields. The concentrations of potentially toxic metals like lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) in healthy lactating mothers of Lahore city were estimated during 2020–2021 with the help of a flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS). Seventy samples of breast milk were collected from two different age groups, namely, G-1 (25–30 years) and G-2 (31–40 years). The results showed that Cd contents were below the detection limit of the measuring instrument; however, the Pb and Hg contents were detected with great ease. The mean concentrations of Pb and Hg in the G-1 corresponding to the age between 25 and 30 years were observed to be 1.914 ± 0.493 μg/L and 10.432 ± 3.249 μg/L, respectively. For the G-2 with an age limit between 31 and 40 years, the concentrations of Pb and Hg were estimated to be 2.045 ± 0.502 μg/L and 11.527 ± 3.231 μg/L, respectively. The T-test analysis of concentrations of these toxic metals indicated a significant correlation between the content levels of Pb and Hg (p < 0.05). The observed values of toxic metals were significantly more frequent than those suggested by WHO (World Health Organization). An increase in the concentrations of Pb and Hg is directly associated with the location of the target population. As a result, it is turned out that the majority of the lactating woman with significantly high levels of Pb and Hg belongs to industrial areas of Lahore.
