During January 2013, a mining spill occurred in the Santa Maria mining region, releasing around 300,000 m3 of tailings on Los Remedios river, which was transported through the San Lorenzo river and finally to El Comedero (EC) dam. Twenty months later, we examined the concentrations of Hg and Se in the muscle, liver, gills, and guts of three fish species (Cyprinus carpio, Oreochromis aureus, Micropterus salmoides) captured in the EC dam to assess the performance of the cleaning operations. A high Se concentration in the liver of all species (carp, 1.2 ± 0.4; tilapia, 3.9 ± 2.1; bass, 3.5 ± 1.1 µg g−1 ww) was consistently observed, while this behavior was only found in the blue tilapia for Hg (0.15 ± 0.11 µg g−1 ww). Tilapia (benthic-detritivorous) exhibited the highest Se concentrations compared to the carp (omnivore) and the largemouth bass (piscivore). In contrast, the largemouth bass had the highest Hg levels in the muscle compared with the other fishes. Such differences could be related to the different metabolism and feeding habits among species. Compared to a tilapia study carried out three months after the mine spill during a mortality event, a decrease was evident in the liver for Se and Hg by 7.2 and 4.7 times, respectively. This reveals that cleaning operations were more efficient for Se and less for Hg, and that a prolonged period was required for the partial recovery of the element levels in fish from sites impacted by mining. Although various studies have reported the bioaccumulation of metals in bivalves of commercial interest from the Gulf of California (GC), the risk associated with their consumption remains poorly understood. In this study, our own and bibliographic concentrations of 14 elements in 16 species of bivalves from 23 locations were used to investigate (1) the species-specific and regional accumulation of metals and arsenic in bivalves, (2) the human health risks by age and sex, and (3) the maximum allowable consumption rates (CRlim). The assessments were done according to the US Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. The results indicate that the bioaccumulation of elements varies markedly between groups (oysters > mussels > clams) and localities (higher on Sinaloa due to intense anthropogenic activities). However, consuming bivalves from the GC remains safe for human health. To prevent health effects for residents or consumers on the GC, we recommend (1) following the CRlim proposed herein; (2) monitoring levels of Cd, Pb, and As (inorganic) in bivalves, as the elements of top concern, mainly when are consumed by children; (3) calculating CRlim for more species and locations, including at least: As, Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn; and (4) determine the regional consumption rates of bivalves. Environmental media discourse analysis allows researchers to explore thematic patterns in media coverage of environmental issues through qualitative observations and quantitative coding. In this paper, we review newspaper media coverage in Florida pertaining to the connections between agriculture, other non-point pollution sources, and downstream ecosystem health. We analyzed 930 articles from 2007 through 2019 to determine common patterns in how these issues are covered by Florida media, including patterns in the causes of environmental problems, potential solutions, and stakeholders mentioned. Findings suggest that water quality problems are often framed as unpredictable or episodic rather than chronic, and as requiring (and only potentially being remediated by) state-level centralized technological or infrastructural solutions. Stakeholder relationships are framed as adversarial, with environmentalists and the agricultural sector as opponents. This case study highlights key power dynamics, barriers, and opportunities for better managing and communicating about agricultural land use practices and associated downstream environmental impacts. During gestation, essential and non-essential trace elements are transferred from the pregnant females to embryos. This study aimed to determine and compare the concentrations of seven essential trace elements (Fe, Zn, Se, Cu, Mn, Cr, Co) and six non-essential trace elements (As, Cd, V, U, Tl, Ag) in the muscle and the liver of a Munk's pygmy devil ray pregnant female, Mobula munkiana, and its embryo. Transfer evidence of essential and non-essential trace elements was detected in M. munkiana tissues. Arsenic was found in elevated concentrations in the pregnant female and the embryo tissues. Elevated levels of Cd, V, U, and Ag were found in the pregnant female liver, but were minimal in the embryo tissue. The ecological risks and health hazards of heavy metals pollution in Taihu Lake have received widespread concern. This study has developed a species-pollution dataset which includes a large amount of data on heavy metal pollution in Taihu fish. The heavy metal contamination poses a significant threat to human consumption, but no studies have been conducted to assess the risk of exposure to consumption of these fish and to make recommendations for their consumption. In this study, we systematically integrated the relevant data in the dataset, analyzed its contamination level using PI (single pollution index) and MPI (metal pollution index) models, and assessed health hazards of fish consumption using THQ (target hazard quotient) and ILCR (incremental lifetime cancer risk) models. Results showed that the contamination levels of heavy metals in fish varied in a feeding habit and living habit dependent manner. The risk of non-cancer health is the highest from consuming omnivorous fish, then from carnivorous and herbivorous fish. The ILCR model predicted that the long-term Taihu consumption of omnivorous fish may pose a potential carcinogenic risk, especially for children. In all, our study provided a comprehensive understanding on the risk of heavy metals in Taihu. Accordingly, it is recommended that children should try to choose herbivorous fish when consuming fish from Taihu Lake while avoiding long-term consumption of omnivorous fish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seafood is a rich source of essential compounds for human health, but the consumption of aquatic products that are exposed to environmental pollutants, especially trace metals, comes with risk. Therefore, in this study, the levels of nickel, zinc, and lead in the muscle of shrimp Penaeus semisulcatus caught from the north of the Persian Gulf as a polluted environment were measured, and the health risks were assessed. The results showed that the level of Zn (300.88 ± 2.76 µg/g) in the muscle of shrimp was higher than Ni (6.82 ± 0.10) and Pb (1.10 ± 0.09 µg/g), and the amount of accumulation of all three metals is higher than the allowable limit proposed by the FAO/WHO. According to values of estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotient (THQ), the consumption of shrimp has no or minimal risk for health. However, the target cancer risk (TR) of Ni (adult, 0.00294; child, 0.00196) indicated that Ni accumulation is associated with carcinogenic risks. This study analyzed the effects of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) on growth, sexual couples, and histological structures of Artemia franciscana exposed to individual concentrations of these metals and combined. No histological effects were observed at tissue level in digestive, respiratory, nervous, and reproductive systems (i.e., necrosis, loss of regular structure) in individual and mixed applications on A. franciscana for 20 days of exposure. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were determined in final size and growth rate among the organisms exposed to Cd and those of control. For Pb, only the final size (3.59 ± 0.59 mm) of organisms exposed to the highest concentration was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those of the control (4.53 ± 0.34 mm) group, whereas for the combined experiment, no significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed in final size and growth rate. At all Cd concentrations, mean sexual couples were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those of the control, as well as for Pb. For the combined experiment (8 μg/L of Cd + 8 μg/L of Pb), sexual couples were not observed, indicating synergism and negative reproduction effects. The results showed that Cd and Pb aquatic environmental regulations (as the Criterion of Continuous Concentration) proposed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) should include their interactions with other metals. In the framework of the biomonitoring programme of the Gulf of Annaba (north-eastern Algeria), this study aims to assess the health status of the Gulf by transplanting the brown mussel Perna perna (Linnaeus 1758) for 12 weeks (June 2017–August 2017) at three sites. The concentrations of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) and as well as a battery of enzymatic and non-enzymatic biomarkers were measured in mussels before and after the transplantation period. Furthermore, analysis of trace metals was performed on the surface layer of the sediment of all the sites. A significant increase in the Cu and Pb concentrations in the mussel dry tissues was observed after the transplantation period and followed the order of metal contamination of the surface layer sediments, indicating a relationship between the bioaccumulation of metals and their bioavailability at each site. Unlike those of Cu and Pb, Cd and Zn concentrations did not reach significant levels of bioaccumulation at any of the three study sites. The biomarker response results were complementary to the measured metal concentrations in the mussel tissues and were associated with the metal accumulation index. The biomagnification of Hg and Se was studied using nitrogen stable isotope analysis during four seasons in a coastal lagoon of the eastern central Gulf of California. This lagoon receives agricultural, municipal, and shrimp aquaculture effluents. The species were categorized into organism groups and presented a significant accumulation of Hg and Se with respect to the sources, while the concentration of both elements in sediment and suspended particulate matter (SPM) was low. Our data confirms the positive transfers (biomagnification factors >1) of Hg and Se in the entire studied food web, and it was structured in five trophic levels across all seasons. Additionally, there were no linear correlations between the molar Se:Hg ratios and the trophic levels of the organism groups. However, the Se:Hg ratios among organism groups were >1, which indicates that there is an excess of Se and that it is not a limiting factor for the detoxification of Hg. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seafood has long been considered a unique source of nutrition. However, increasing trends in consumption of marine products must be considered, especially in potentially polluted environments such as the Persian Gulf. This study was undertaken to analyse the level of heavy metal contamination of nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) in shrimp (Penaeus merguiensis) captured from the northern Persian Gulf. The concentration of heavy metals in the muscle of shrimp followed the order Zn > Ni > Pb. The content of Zn and Ni was higher than recommended standard limits by the FAO/WHO. The combined impact of all metals was lower than the acceptable limit of 1 in shrimp. The carcinogenic risk for Ni was higher than the unacceptable value. In total, our finding indicated no potential health risk from the daily consumption of this species. However, long-term consumption of shrimp can pose a risk of carcinogenic effects of nickel. Trace metals have been found in sea turtle blood and tissues and may represent a threat to these endangered species. Essential trace metal (Cu, Zn Cd, Pb, As, and Hg) concentrations were determined in blood of adult female, post-nesting olive ridley turtles Lepidochelys olivacea (n = 35) on Ceuta beach, Sinaloa, Mexico. Essential metals (Zn and Cu) analyzed were found in higher concentrations than toxic metals (Cd and Pb), while As and Hg concentrations were below the limits of detection (0.01 μg g-1). Low Pb concentrations (0.09 μg g-1) were previously observed in sea turtles in the Gulf of California. There were no significant correlations found between curved carapace length (61.00–71.00 ± 2.29) vs metal concentrations (p > 0.05). Cd levels were relatively high when compared to other species and populations of sea turtles worldwide and Cd may represent the greatest risk for sea turtles in the Mexican Pacific. Such concentrations of Cd may pose a further risk to sea turtles through bioaccumulation from the nesting female to offspring which may affect embryo development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The occurrence and contamination level of seven important toxic metals (Cd, Cu, Co, Cr, Hg, Pb, and Zn) and three additional metals (Al, Fe, and Mn) in the water, sediment, and shrimp muscle in aquaculture areas located in Central Java, Indonesia, were investigated. The results suggest that the majority of metals have higher concentrations in the inlet followed by the outlet and ponds. Cd dissolved in the waters exhibited the highest level in Pekalongan (3.15 ± 0.33 μg L−1). Although Pb was not detected in the water, it was detected in the sediment, and the concentration ranged from 7.6 to 15.40 mg kg−1 dw. In general, the heavy metal concentrations in the sediments were found to decrease in the sequence Al > Fe > Mn > Zn > Cr > Cu > Co > Pb. Concentrations below the effects range low level based on the Canadian sediment quality guidelines were found for Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn, whereas moderate sediment pollution (25–75 mg kg−1 dw) was observed for Cr (all regions), Cu (except in the Pekalongan region), and Zn (Brebes and Tegal regions) according to the US EPA standard. The status of the waters was evaluated by calculating a pollution index derived mostly from Mn and Zn. The ecological risk (geoaccumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), and potential ecological risk index (ERI)) determined in the sediments indicated that all studied areas had low to moderate contamination. The concentrations of all metals in shrimp were generally below the maximum limits for seafood, except for Zn (in all stations), Pb, and Cr (Tegal and Pekalongan). The fast-growing discharge of effluents of engineered nanomaterials (ENM) and heavy metals in freshwater ecosystems raises concern in recent times. This study investigated the effects of the co-exposure between nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) and lead (Pb) in a simplified freshwater food web model, including zooplankton (copepods sp.) and Clarias gariepinus on bioaccumulation and antioxidant activity. We carried out a chronic (28 days) semi-static bioassay by feeding individually fish with zooplankton exposed to TiO2 NPs (0.09 and 0.20 μM), Pb (0.01 and 0.04 μM), and their binary mixtures. The binary mixtures caused a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in malondialdehyde (1.64–2.01-fold), catalase (3.18–3.89-fold), glutathione reductase (1.37–1.46-fold), and glutathione peroxidase (1.19–1.89-fold) levels. Lead accumulated in the tissues had bioaccumulation factor between 0.40 and 1.42 in binary mixture. These results indicate that chronic exposure of TiO2 NPs could influence the BAF of Pb, neurotoxicity, changes of antioxidant enzymes, and retardation of food uptake. We studied the biomagnification of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) with carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stable isotope analyses during four seasons, in the food web of a semiarid coastal lagoon in the central-eastern Gulf of California (GC). The concentrations of the four metals increased among functional organism groups, from the food web base to the highest trophic levels. In general, the distribution of the elements for the four sampled seasons was Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. The correlations between trophic level values and log-transformed metal concentrations were significantly (p < 0.05) positive for Cd (r = 0.61–0.91), Cu (r = 0.63–0.70), and Zn (r = 0.50–0.73), while Pb showed only one positive correlation (r = 0.38). The biomagnification factors (from specific predator-prey scenarios) ranged from 0.32 to 3.88 for Cd, 0.05 to 37.1 for Cu, 0.50 to 3.57 for Pb, and 0.70 to 22.2 for Zn. The trophic biomagnification factors (considering the entire food web) varied from 1.26 to 1.41 for Cd, 1.95 to 2.24 for Cu, 1.02 to 1.15 for Pb, and 1.45 to 1.78 for Zn. The main goal of this monitoring program was to evaluate the contamination in the intertidal environment of Óbidos Lagoon by the metals Cd, Pb, and Ni on water, sediments, and on biological samples, using the bivalve Cerastoderma edule (common name: cockle) as a biomonitor. Since C. edule is an edible mollusc, the risk of their consumption by humans from this lagoon was also evaluated. The study was performed in a restricted area of the lagoon—the ML station—where human activities, such as shellfish harvesting, intersect with the natural processes occurring in this system. The results obtained revealed that the water samples were polluted with Cd and Pb with concentrations (0.00025 mg l−1 and 0.0072 mg l−1) above the maximum legislated on the Directive 2008/105/EC, while for Ni, this occurred only on one of the seasons sampled (summer 2010: 0.029 mg l−1). The sediments were not contaminated with Cd and Ni, and the contamination detected for the metal Pb, allowed the classification of this station as an unpolluted site ([Pbmin] = 7.477 mg.kg−1 and [Pbmax] = 19.875 mg.kg−1). On biological samples, comparing the results of metal contaminations with the values of the maximum levels fixed by European Commission Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 and USFDA, all the results were below the legal value. Therefore, during the period of study, the consumption of this bivalve by humans was safe. Also, BAF and CF calculations suggest that C. edule can be used as a biomonitor to determine the source of the contaminations. This study supported the use of C. edule as a biomonitor to assess the contamination by the metals Pb and Ni at the Óbidos Lagoon and allowed to predict the potential transfer of metals to higher trophic levels with potential impacts on the natural and human communities. Zinc (Zn) bioaccumulation and trophic transfer were analyzed in the food web of Lake Nahuel Huapi, a deep, unpolluted ultraoligotrophic system in North Patagonia. Benthic macroinvertebrates, plankton, and native and introduced fish were collected at three sites. The effect of pyroclastic inputs on Zn levels in lacustrine food webs was assessed by studying the impact of the eruption of Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcanic complex (PCCVC) in 2011, by performing three sampling campaigns immediately before and after the PCCVC eruption, and after 2 years of recovery of the ecosystem. Zinc trophodynamics in L. Nahuel Huapi food web was assessed using nitrogen stable isotopes (δ15N). There was no significant increase of Zn concentrations ([Zn]) in L. Nahuel Huapi biota after the PCCVC eruption, despite the evidence of [Zn] increase in lake water that could be associated with volcanic ash leaching. The organisms studied exhibited [Zn] above the threshold level considered for dietary deficiency, regulating Zn adequately even under a catastrophic situations like PCCVC 2011 eruption. Zinc concentrations exhibited a biodilution pattern in the lake’s food web. To the best of our knowledge, present research is the first report of Zn biodilution in lacustrine systems, and the first to study Zn transfer in a freshwater food web including both pelagic and benthic compartments. This paper aims to contribute to the use of mangrove cupped oyster, Crassostrea rhizophorae, as a biomonitor species for chemical contamination assessment in mangrove-lined Caribbean coastal systems. Sampling was carried out in eight localities (three in Nicaragua and five in Colombia) with different types and levels of contamination. Oysters were collected during the rainy and dry seasons of 2012-2013 and the tissue concentrations of metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were determined. Low tissue concentrations of metals (except Hg) and PAHs; moderate-to-high tissue concentrations of Hg, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), and dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethanes (DDTs); detectable levels of chlorpyrifos, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (mainly CB28, CB118, CB138 and CB 153) and brominated diphenyl ethers 85 (BDE85); and negligible levels of musks were recorded in Nicaraguan oysters. A distinct profile of POPs was identified in Colombia, where the tissue concentrations of PCBs and synthetic musk fragrances were low to moderate, and Ag, As, Cd, Pb, and PAHs ranged from moderate to extremely high. Overall, the values recorded for HCHs, DDTs and PCBs in Nicaraguan mangrove cupped oysters greatly exceeded the reference values in tissues of C. rhizophorae from the Wider Caribbean Region, whereas only the levels of PCBs were occasionally surpassed in Colombia. Different contaminant profiles were distinguished between oysters from Nicaragua and Colombia in radar plots constructed using the main groups of contaminants (metals, PAHs, musks, PCBs, and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)). Likewise, integrated pollution indices revealed differences in the levels of contaminants. Moreover, the profiles and levels in oyster tissues also varied with season. Thus, principal component analysis clearly discriminated Nicaraguan and Colombian localities and, especially in Colombia, seasonal trends in chemical contamination and differences amongst localities were evidenced. The geographical and environmental disparity of the studied scenarios may represent to a large extent the diversity of mangrove-lined Caribbean coastal systems and therefore the present results support the use of C. rhizophorae as suitable biomonitor species at Caribbean regional scale, where seasonal variability is a major factor controlling pollutant mobility and bioavailability. This research focuses on the fractionation and distribution patterns of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, and Fe) in surficial sediments collected from Shadegan Wildlife Refuge, the biggest wetland in southern part of Iran, to provide an overall classification for the sources of metals in the study area using a sequential extraction method. For this purpose, a four-step sequential extraction technique was applied to define the partitioning of the metals into different geochemical phases of the sediment. The results illustrated that the average total level of Zn, Cu, and Fe in surface sediments were 55.20 ± 16.04, 22.86 ± 5.68, and 25,979.01 ± 6917.91 μg/g dw, respectively. On the average, the chemical partitioning of all metals in most stations was in the order of residual >oxidizable-organic > acid-reducible > exchangeable. In the same way, the results of calculated geochemical indices revealed that Cu, Zn, and Fe concentrations are mainly influenced by lithogenic origins. Cadmium, lead, copper, and zinc were analyzed in the dorsal muscle, liver, gonad, and stomach contents of 67 sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus, from the Eastern Pacific. Muscle exhibited the following pattern (μg/g wet weight): Zn (15.05 ± 1.24) > Cu (0.461 ± 0.026) > Cd (0.434 ± 0.099) > Pb (0.025 ± 0.001); liver Zn (119.1 ± 7.6) > Cd (95.1 ± 11.0) > Cu (39.7 ± 2.6) > Pb (0.047 ± 0.004); and gonad Zn (96.8 ± 7.8) > Cd (2.16 ± 0.38) > Cu (2.08 ± 0.14) > Pb (0.033 ± 0.003). Significant ( p < 0.05) correlations were observed between elements, length, and weight. I. platypterus feed mainly on fishes and cephalopods with variable concentrations (μg/g wet weight) of Cd (0.081-11.41), Pb (0.002-0.057), Cu (0.204-4.35), and Zn (3.23-86.6). Of the four analyzed elements, only Pb was biomagnified (BMF = 1.85). According to the regulatory limits, muscle exhibited Cd concentrations higher than the Official Mexican Standard, WHO, FDA (28 % of samples), and the European Union (40 %) regulations.
