Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) oxides can be used to remediate Cd-polluted soils due to their excellent performance in heavy metal adsorption. However, their remediation capability is rather limited, and a higher content of available Mn and Fe in soils can reduce Cd accumulation in wheat plants due to the competitive absorption effect. In this study, goethite and cryptomelane were first respectively used to immobilize Cd in Cd-polluted weakly alkaline soils, and sodium citrate was then added to increase the content of available Mn and Fe content for further reduction of wheat Cd absorption. In the first season, the content of soil-available Cd and Cd in wheat plants significantly decreased when cryptomelane, goethite and their mixture were used as the remediation agents. Cryptomelane showed a better remediation effect, which could be attributed to its higher adsorption performance. The grain Cd content could be decreased from 0.35 mg kg−1 to 0.25 mg kg−1 when the content of cryptomelane was controlled at 0.5%. In the second season, when sodium citrate at 20 mmol kg−1 was further added to the soils with 0.5% cryptomelane treatment in the first season, the content of soil available Cd was increased by 14.8%, and the available Mn content was increased by 19.5%, leading to a lower Cd content in wheat grains (0.16 mg kg−1) probably due to the competitive absorption. This work provides a new strategy for the remediation of slightly Cd-polluted arable soils with safe and high-quality production of wheat. Environmental exposure to metal(loid)s has been associated with adverse effects on human health, but the systemic repercussion of these elements on the development of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) is still poorly understood. To summarize evidence published about the influence of environmental exposure to aluminum, arsenic, barium, cadmium, lead, strontium and mercury on the development of HDP. We conducted a systematic literature review according to the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. The search strategy was validated by the Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies. We searched for articles published up to February 2023 in seven databases without language restriction. Two researchers conducted the steps for selection, data extraction and evaluation of the methodological quality of the instruments for epidemiological studies of the Joanna Briggs Institute. Any disagreements were resolved by a third researcher. We obtained 5076 records, of which 37 articles met the inclusion criteria moderate to high methodological quality. Single exposure to metal(loid)s was predominant, and the leading biological matrix analyzed to detect the concentrations from exposure was maternal blood. Lead was the metal investigated the most, and had the largest number of studies showing positive association with HDP. In relation to the other metal(loid)s, higher levels were found in women with HDP in comparison with healthy women, but the finding of a cause-effect relationship was inconsistent. Although we found evidence of harmful effects of the metal(loid)s studied on human health, the results were inconclusive with regard to HDP. Longitudinal studies that consider prospective investigation, adjustment of confounding factors and the interference of other contaminants in the exacerbation of oxidative stress in women from the preconception phase to the puerperal period should be encouraged. Heavy metal pollution in soil has emerged as a major environmental concern. This can be attributed to human activities such as mining, modern agriculture, and industrialization. This study was conducted to determine how heavy metals spread from mine tailings to surrounding farmland. Metal absorption and accumulation were also investigated in the root and shoot biomass of tapioca crops grown in those farmlands. Metal concentrations in MTAS1 were 85.3 ± 1.2, 45.8 ± 1.5, 134.8 ± 1.7, 92.4 ± 2.2, and 78.95 ± 1.4 mg kg-1, respectively. Heavy metal concentrations in MTAS2 and MTAS3 were found to be 79.62 ± 1.6, 75.4 ± 1.5, 41.31 ± 1.1, 47.8 ± 1.6, 142.5 ± 2.1, 128.4 ± 1.4, 86.2 ± 1.9, 79.5 ± 1.3, and 83.4 ± 1.2 mg kg-1, respectively. Tapioca crop shoot and root biomass grown at these metal polluted sites absorbed and accumulated significant amounts of Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, and Mn. This study focuses on the diffusion patterns of principal ore-forming elements (Pb and Zn) and associated elements (Cd, Cu, Cr, and As) in lead-zinc ore. Sampling points in upwind and downwind directions of lead-zinc ore areas at various densities (1 N/km2 – 4 N/km2) were categorized. This study analyzed the statistical relationship between the content of PTEs in the soil around lead-zinc ore and the source strength and dominant wind direction, constructed one-dimensional and two-dimensional diffusion model, and simulated the EER scope caused by PTEs. The findings indicate that: (1) concerning source strength, the content of PTEs in soils of high-density ore aggregation areas is significantly higher than in low-density ore aggregation areas. However, the impact of source strength decreases with decreasing ore grade, with a difference in Pb content of 1.71 times among principal ore-forming elements and almost consistent Cd content among associated elements. (2) Regarding the transport pathways, for most PTEs, the inverse proportion coefficients downwind are higher than upwind, approximately 1.18–3.63 times, indicating greater migration distances of PTEs downwind due to atmospheric dispersion. (3) By establishing a two-dimensional risk diffusion model, the study simulates the maximum radius of risk diffusion (r = 5.7 km), the 50% probability radius (r = 3.1 km), and the minimum radius (r = 0.8 km) based on the maximum, median, and minimum values statistically obtained from the EER. This study provides a scientific basis for implementing preventive measures for PTEs accumulation in soil within different pollution ranges. Different risk prevention and control measures should be adopted for PTEs accumulation in soil within the three ranges after cutting off pollution sources. Subsequent research should further investigate the impact and contribution of atmospheric transmission and surface runoff on the diffusion of PTEs in areas with high risk near lead-zinc ore. The article examines the concentration of 9 heavy metals (Hg, Pb, Zn, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Ba and V) and As in the soil cover of the urban area in one of the largest cities in Russia, Ufa (the Republic of Bashkortostan). It is compared with aggregated data of concentrations on urbanized areas in surface soils throughout the world. For elements exceeding the average background values in soils of the urban area (Cr, Ni, Cu and Co), the average concentrations in the city soils were 346, 101, 51 and 18 ppm, respectively. Using enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation index (I geo), and concentration coefficients (CC), Cr and Ni were identified as elements entering the soil cover as a result of anthropogenic pollution. Although the level of their enrichment and contamination of soils in the most territory of the city corresponds to the moderate class, there are sites with critical threshold values. Spatial analysis of heavy metals distribution was carried out based on the results of pollution load index (PLI) and ecological risk factor (Er) calculations with the use of graphical presentation of results, which allowed specific and detailed description of sites calling for special attention. The use of cluster analysis allowed dividing the sample of chemical elements into groups with probably similar sources of entry into the environment. Monte Carlo modeling of risk calculation showed negligible non-cancer risks for both adult and child populations in most of the city. While children's exposure to Cr was of concern in the more residential part of the city, free of large industrial plants, As posed a threat with respect to cancer risks in the southern part of the city, with elevated concentrations and other HMs in vicinity of the oil refineries. This study investigated the bioindicator potential of Amaranthus retroflexus L., Plantago lanceolata L., Rumex acetosa L., and Trifolium pratense L. including the use of Lolium multiflorum L. as a reference species, for heavy metal pollution monitoring, in particular Zinc (Zn), Cadmium (Cd), Nickel (Ni), and Lead (Pb). Controlled heavy metal contamination was applied through irrigation with metal nitrate solutions two levels of contamination (low and high). The study also focused on analyzing heavy metals concentration in plant tissues and related physiological responses. Distinct physiological responses to heavy metal stress were observed among the investigated species, highlighting unique variations in their reactions. Hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde content, and enzymatic activities emerged as reliable indicators of plant stress induced by heavy metal solutions. P. lanceolata displayed elevated Zn concentrations in both roots and leaves (3271 ± 337 and 4956 ± 82 mg kg−1). For Pb, L. multiflorum and P. lanceolata showed highest root concentrations (2964 ± 937 and 1605 ± 289 mg kg−1), while R. acetosa had higher leaf concentration (1957 ± 147 mg kg−1). For Ni, L. multiflorum had the highest root concentration (1148 ± 93 mg kg−1), and P. lanceolata exhibited the highest leaf concentration (2492 ± 28 mg kg−1). P. lanceolata consistently demonstrated the highest Cd concentrations in both roots (126 ± 21 mg kg−1) and leaves (163 ± 12 mg kg−1). The evidence of interactive effect of the toxic metal (TM) mixture and apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 gene on cognitive impairment in older adults is scarce. We aimed to explore whether the associations of single TMs and their mixture with cognitive impairment depend on APOE ε4 in Chinese community-dwelling older people. A total of 1148 older adults from a subset of the baseline survey of a cohort study were included. Blood arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), strontium (Sr), and vanadium (V) were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. APOE gene (rs429358, rs7412) polymorphisms were analyzed by the Polymerase Chain Reaction instrument. Mixed effects logistic regression was applied to estimate the relationships of single TMs and APOE genotype with cognitive impairment. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were performed to examine joint impacts of the TM mixture, as well as the interaction of the TM mixture with APOE ε4 genotype on cognitive impairment. Pb displayed a significant linear association with an increased odds of cognitive impairment after adjustment for covariates (P trend = 0.045). While APOE genotype did not show a significant correlation with cognitive impairment. WQS showed that the TM mixture was associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment by 31.0% (OR= 1.31, 95% CI: 0.92, 1.87) while no significance was found. BKMR exhibited a significant linear association between the TM mixture and cognitive impairment. Moreover, both WQS and BKMR indicated that Pb contributed the most to cognitive impairment within the mixture. Significant interactions of Pb or the TM mixture and APOE genotype on cognitive impairment were observed, contributing to 38.1% and 38.2% of total effects, respectively. APOE ε4 allele amplifies the associations of single Pb or the TM mixture with cognitive impairment. These findings may help to develop precision prevention. Even though researches have shown that biochar can improve soil-health and plant-growth even in harsh environments and get rid of harmful heavy metals and new contaminants, it is still not sustainable, affordable, or effective enough. Therefore, scientists are required to develop nanomaterials in order to preserve numerous aquatic and terrestrial species. The carbonaceous chemical known as nano-biochar (N-BC) can be used to get rid of metal contamination and emerging contaminants. However, techniques to reduce hetero-aggregation and agglomeration of nano-biochar are needed that lead to the emergence of emerging nano-biochar (EN-BC) in order to maximise its capacity for adsorption of nano-biochar. To address concerns in regards to the expanding human population and sustain a healthy community, it is imperative to address the problems associated with toxic heavy metals, emerging contaminants, and other abiotic stressors that are threatening agricultural development. Nano-biochar can provide an effective solution for removal of emerging contaminants, toxic heavy metals, and non-degradable substance. This review provides the detailed functional mechanistic and kinetics of nano-biochar, its effectiveness in promoting plant growth, and soil health under abiotic stress. Residual heavy metals in soils will destroy microbial community stability and influence its aggregation. However, exploring microbial ecology under heavy-metal stress still requires a conjoint analysis of bacterial interspecies communication and the community diversity maintenance mechanism. In this study, soil samples were collected from a heavy-metal-contaminated site in China to investigate the ecological response of indigenous microbial communities through high-throughput sequencing. Results showed that bacterial taxa and functions generated unusual decoupling phenomena. There were no significant differences in the diversity of species with the increase in concentration of heavy metals (Hg, Se, and Cr), but the functional diversity was lost. Also, the average niche breadth of bacterial species increased from 1.70 to 2.28, but community stability declined and the species assembly was always a deterministic process (NST <0.5). After the bacterial functional assembly changed from a stochastic process to a deterministic process (NST <0.5), it was transformed into a stochastic process (NST >0.5) again under the stress of high-concentration heavy metals, indicating that the collective stress resistance of bacterial communities changed from positive mutation into passive functional propagation. The research results can provide new insight into understanding the adaptive evolution of communities and ecosystem restoration under the stress of soil heavy metals. Feather analysis is an ethical and effective method for assessing the exposure of wild birds to environmental contamination due to trace elements and organic pollutants. We used feather to monitor the exposure to three toxic and non-essential metals (Hg, Cd, and Pb) and rare earth elements (REEs) of Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) breeding in different coastal areas (Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Abruzzo, and Apulia) along the Italian coast of the Adriatic Sea. Feathers (n = 113) were collected from April to June. Feather concentrations evidenced a significant exposure to Hg (13.05 ± 1.71 mg kg−1 dw) and REEs (447.3 ± 52.8 ng g−1 dw) in the Kentish plover breeding in Veneto (n = 21) compared to the other coastal areas, with several individuals showing Hg concentrations above the adverse effect (5 mg kg−1 dw) and high-risk (9.14 mg kg−1 dw) thresholds reported for birds. Higher REE concentrations compared to Marche (n = 29), Abruzzo (n = 11) and Apulia (n = 13) were also reported for birds breeding in Emilia-Romagna (474.9 ± 41.9 ng g−1 dw; n = 29). The exposure to Cd and Pb was low in all the coastal areas, and only a few samples (n = 6 and n = 4 for Cd and Pb, respectively) exceeded the adverse effect thresholds (0.1 and 4 mg kg−1 for Cd and Pb, respectively). A significant sex-related difference was observed for REE-concentrations, with females showing higher concentration than males. Mangrove wetlands, as one of the natural ecosystems with the most ecological services, have garnered widespread attention about their microbial driven biogeochemical cycling. Urbanization have led to different spatial patterns of environmental conditions and microbial communities in mangroves. However, viruses, as the pivotal drivers of biogeochemical cycling in mangroves, remain inadequately explored in terms of how their ecological potential and complex interactions with host respond to functional zonings. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a comprehensive investigation on the structural and functional properties of temperate and lytic viruses in mangrove wetlands from different functional zonings by jointly using high-throughput sequencing, prokaryotic and viral metagenomics. Multiple environmental factors were found to significantly influence the taxonomic and functional composition, as well as lysogen-lysis decision-making of mangrove viruses. Furthermore, enriched auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) involved in methane, nitrogen and sulfur metabolism, and heavy metal resistance were unveiled in mangrove viruses, whose community composition was closely related to lifestyle and host. The virus-host pairs with different lifestyles were also discovered to react to environmental changes in different ways, which provided an empirical evidence for how virus and bacteria dynamics were specific to viral lifestyles in nature. This study expands our comprehension of the intricate interactions among virus, prokaryotic host and the environment in mangrove wetlands from multiple perspectives, including viral lifestyles, virus-host interactions, and habitat dependence. Bioretention facilities have proven highly effective in removing pollutants from runoff. However, there is a concerning paucity of research on the contamination characteristics and associated risks posed by refractory pollutants in these facilities following long-term operation. This research focuses on the distribution, sources, microbial community impact, and human health risks of pollutants in eight bioretention facilities that have been operational for 5–11 years. The results showed that the distribution of Cu, Zn, and Cd was closely related to anti-seepage measures. PAHs, PCBs, and OCPs primarily accumulated in the surface, with concentrations ranging from 7.42 to 20.34 mg/kg, 31.8–77.3 μg/kg, and 60.5–163.6 μg/kg, respectively. Their concentrations inversely correlate with the depth of the media. Although the majority of contaminants remained below their respective risk thresholds, their concentrations typically exceeded those of background soil values, indicating an enrichment phenomenon. Source analysis revealed that PAHs primarily originate from oil combustion, PCBs were linked to their related industrial products, DDTs had their main sources in technical DDx and residues from the use of dicofol, while HCHs were traced back to historical residues from agricultural activities. Microbial α-diversity (Chao 1 and Shannon) decreased by 8.3–23.4% and 0.8–4.4%, respectively, in different facilities after long-term operation. The most dominant microbial phylum in the facilities was Proteobacteria (all relative abundances >48%). The total relative abundance of dominant genera was 6.7–34.3% higher than the control site, and Pseudomonas , a typical POPs-heavy metal degrading bacterium, had the highest relative abundance (>1.2%). Cu, Zn, and Cd present no non-carcinogenic risks and have low potential ecological risks. However, the lifetime cancer risk for PAHs is 10−6 ∼10−4 in most facilities and is of concern. The cancer risk for PCBs is acceptable, while OCPs pose a low cancer risk only for children. Per- and poly-fluorinated compounds (PFAS) and heavy metals constitute two classes of environmental exposures with known immunotoxicant effects. In this pilot study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of exposure to heavy metals and PFAS on COVID-19 severity. We hypothesized that elevated plasma-PFAS concentrations and urinary heavy metal concentrations would be associated with increased odds of ICU admission in COVID-19 hospitalized individuals. Using the University of Southern California Clinical Translational Sciences Institute (SC-CTSI) biorepository of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, urinary concentrations of 15 heavy metals and urinary creatinine were measured in n = 101 patients and plasma concentrations of 13 PFAS were measured in n = 126 patients. COVID-19 severity was determined based on whether a patient was admitted to the ICU during hospitalization. Associations of metals and PFAS with ICU admission were assessed using logistic regression models, controlling for age, sex, ethnicity, smoking status, and for metals, urinary dilution. The average age of patients was 55 ± 14.2 years. Among SC-CTSI participants with urinary measurement of heavy metals and blood measures of PFAS, 54.5% (n = 61) and 54.8% (n = 80) were admitted to the ICU, respectively. For heavy metals, we observed higher levels of Cd, Cr, and Cu in ICU patients. The strongest associations were with Cadmium (Cd). After accounting for covariates, each 1 SD increase in Cd resulted in a 2.00 (95% CI: 1.10–3.60; p = 0.03) times higher odds of admission to the ICU. When including only Hispanic or Latino participants, the effect estimates between cadmium and ICU admission remained similar. Results for PFAS were less consistent, with perfluorodecanesulfonic acid (PFDS) exhibiting a positive but non-significant association with ICU admission (Odds ratio, 95% CI: 1.50, 0.97–2.20) and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) exhibiting a negative association with ICU admission (0.53, 0.31–0.88). Lake Baikal, the largest freshwater lake by volume, provides drinking water and aquatic food supplies to over 2.5 million people. However, the lake has been contaminated with recalcitrant pollutants released from surrounding industrial complexes, agriculture, and natural lands, thereby increasing the risk of their bioaccumulation in fish and seals. Yet, a collective analysis of historical concentration data and their bioaccumulation potential as well as what factors drive their accumulation in fish or seals remains largely unknown. We analyzed concentration data from 42 studies collected between 1985 and 2019 in water, sediment, fish, and seals of Lake Baikal. Heavy metals had the highest concentrations in water and biota followed closely by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorines. Among organochlorines, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) showed the highest levels in water, surpassing hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) concentrations, particularly after normalizing to solubility. While naphthalene and phenanthrene exhibited the highest average concentrations among polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), their relative concentrations significantly decreased upon solubility normalization. The analysis confirmed that bioconcentration and biomagnification of organochlorine pesticides, PCBs, PAHs, and heavy metals depend primarily on source strength to drive their concentration in water and secondarily on their chemical characteristics as evidenced by the higher concentrations of low-solubility PCBs and high molecular weight PAHs in water and sediment. The differential biomagnification patterns of Cu, Hg, and Zn compared to Pb are attributed to their distinct sources and bioavailability, with Cu, Hg, and Zn showing more pronounced biomagnification due to prolonged industrial release, in contrast to the declining Pb levels. Dibenzo- p -dioxins were detected in sediment and seals, but not in water or fish compartments. These data highlight the importance of addressing even low concentrations of organic and inorganic pollutants and the need for more consistent and frequent monitoring to ensure the future usability of this and other similar essential natural resources. Microplastics and heavy metals are ubiquitous and persistent contaminants that are widely distributed worldwide, yet little is known about the effects of their interaction on soil ecosystems. A soil incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the individual and combined effects of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) and lead (Pb) on soil enzymatic activities, microbial biomass, respiration rate, and community diversity. The results indicate that the presence of PE-MPs notably reduced soil pH and elevated soil Pb bioavailability, potentially exacerbated the combined toxicity on the biogeochemical cycles of soil nutrients, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, and the activities of soil urease, sucrase, and alkaline phosphatase. Soil CO 2 emissions increased by 7.9% with PE-MPs alone, decreased by 46.3% with single Pb, and reduced by 69.4% with PE-MPs and Pb co-exposure, compared to uncontaminated soils. Specifically, the presence of PE-MPs and Pb, individually and in combination, facilitated the soil metabolic quotient, leading to reduced microbial metabolic efficiency. Moreover, the addition of Pb and PE-MPs modified the composition of the microbial community, leading to the enrichment of specific taxa. Tax4Fun analysis showed the effects of Pb, PE-MPs and their combination on the biogeochemical processes and ecological functions of microbes were mainly by altering amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport, and signal transduction. Shark is a seafood commodity that is a good source of minerals and accumulates heavy metals and trace elements through biomagnification, which can pose health risk if taken above the permissible limit. A study was conducted on commonly landed eleven shark species (Scoliodon laticaudus , Rhizopriodon oligolinx , Sphyrna lewini (CR), Carcharhinus macloti , Carcharinus limbatus , Carcharhinus amblyrhynchoides , Carcharhinus sorrah, Carcharinus falciformes(VU), Glaucostegus granulatus, Chiloscyllium arabicum, Loxodon macrorhinus) and analyzed for their heavy metal content, Hazard Index, Total Hazard Quotient, Metal Pollution Index, and also calculated the health risk associated with the consumption. Most of the heavy metals and trace minerals were found to be within the acceptable limit. The Targeted Hazard Quotient (THQ) and the Hazard Index (HI) of all the species except two were less than 1 (HI ≤ 1.0). The Metal Pollution Index (MPI) is showing either no impact or very low contamination. Environmental monitoring of mercury (Hg2+) ions has become increasingly important as a result of their detrimental effects on biological organisms at all levels. To recognize toxic metal ions, utmost effort has been devoted to developing new materials that are highly selective, ultra-sensitive, and provide rapid response. In this context, a new chemosensor, 2-imino [N - (N-amido phenyl)]-6-methoxy-3-carbethoxy quinoline (L), has been synthesized by combining 2-formyl-6-methoxy-3-carbethoxy quinoline and benzhydrazide and it has been extensively characterized by NMR, FTIR, ESI-Mass and SCXRD analysis. Probe L has excellent specificity and sensitivity toward Hg2+ ions in semi-aqueous solutions, with a detection limit of 0.185 μM, regardless of the presence of other interfering cations. Chromogenic behavior was demonstrated by the L when it changed the color of the solution from colorless to light yellow, a change that can be observed visually. The probe L forms a 1:1 stochiometric complex with an estimated association constant (K a) of 6.74 × 104 M−1. The 1H NMR change and density functional theory calculations were analyzed to improve our understanding of the sensing mechanism. Anthropogenic activities are leaving lots of chemical footprints on the soil. It alters the physiochemical characteristics of the soil thereby modifying the natural soil microbiome. The prevalence of antimicrobial-resistance microbes in polluted soil has gained attention due to its obvious public health risks. This study focused on assessing the prevalence and distribution of antibiotic-resistance genes in polluted soil ecosystems impacted by industrial enterprises in southern Russia. Metagenomic analysis was conducted on soil samples collected from polluted sites using various approaches, and the prevalence of antibiotic-resistance genes was investigated. The results revealed that efflux-encoding pump sequences were the most widely represented group of genes, while genes whose products replaced antibiotic targets were less represented. The level of soil contamination increased, and there was an increase in the total number of antibiotic-resistance genes in proteobacteria, but a decrease in actinobacteria. The study proposed an optimal mechanism for processing metagenomic data in polluted soil ecosystems, which involves mapping raw reads by the KMA method, followed by a detailed study of specific genes. Seafood is an essential protein source for coastal communities. However, they can accumulate heavy metals from human activities which could pose a potential health risk to consumers. In this study, we investigated the distribution, bioaccumulation, trophic transfer and potential human health risk of heavy metals in sediments, shell and fin fish collected from the Escravos Estuary in southern Nigeria. Heavy metals (Ni, Cd, V, Pb and Cu) in sediments, periwinkles and tongue soles from the two study sites were lower than the permissible limits for fishery products. The metal distribution in fish tissues was in the decreasing order of liver > gills > muscles > gonads > rest of the fish. Moderate to high BSAF (>1) was reported for Cd, Pb and Cu. All the studied metals, except Pb, showed evidence of biomagnification from periwinkle to tongue sole. The estimated daily intake (EDI) and hazard ratio (HR) for metals in periwinkles from both study sites were lower or within the USEPA reference doses (RfD) for the respective daily intake and HR value < 1, except for Cd, V and Pb for children. In contrast, EDI values in the muscle of tongue soles were higher than the RfD values for heavy metals except for Ni and Pb, whereas HR values > 1 except for Ni, Cd and V. In the whole fish, EDI and HR values were disproportionately high in both study sites with higher values reported for children. This study provides the first insights on the trophic transfer and risk assessment of heavy metals from petroleum and gas operations impacting the Escravos Estuary and the implications to public health. Heavy metals pollution is a notable threat to environment and human health. This study evaluated the potential ecological and health risks of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, Zn, Ni, and As) and their accumulation in a peanut-soil system based on 34 soil and peanut kernel paired samples across China. Soil As and Cd posed the greatest pollution risk with 47.1% and 17.6% of soil samples exceeding the risk screen levels, respectively, with 26.5% and 20.6% of the soil sites at relatively strong potential ecological risk level, respectively, and with the geo-accumulation levels at several soil sites in the uncontaminated to moderately contaminated categories. About 35.29% and 2.94% of soil sites were moderately and severely polluted based on Nemerow comprehensive pollution index, respectively, and a total of 32.4% of samples were at moderate ecological hazard level based on comprehensive potential ecological risk index values. The Cd, Cr, Ni, and Cu contents exceeded the standard in 11.76, 8.82, 11.76 and 5.88% of the peanut kernel samples, respectively. Soil metals posed more health risks to children than adults in the order As > Ni > Cr > Cu > Pb > Zn > Cd for non-carcinogenic health risks and Ni > Cr ≫ Cd > As > Pb for carcinogenic health risks. The soil As non-cancer risk index for children was greater than the permitted limits at 14 sites, and soil Ni and Cr posed the greatest carcinogenic risk to adults and children at many soil sites. The metals in peanut did not pose a non-carcinogenic risk according to standard. Peanut kernels had strong enrichment ability for Cd with an average bio-concentration factor (BCF) of 1.62. Hematite nanoparticles commonly undergoes isomorphic substitution of Al3+ in nature, while how the Al-substitution-induced morphological change, defective structure and newly generated Al–OH sites affect the adsorption behavior of hematite for contaminants remains poorly understood. Herein, the interfacial reactions between Al-substituted hematite and Pb2+ was investigated via CD-MUSIC modeling and DFT calculations. As the Al content increased from 0% to 9.4%, Al-substitution promoted the proportion of (001) facets and caused Fe vacancies on hematite, which increased the total active site density of hematite from 5.60 to 17.60 sites/nm2. The surface positive charge of hematite significantly increased from 0.096 to 0.418 C/m2 at pH 5.0 due to the increases in site density and proton affinity (log K H) of hematite under Al-substitution. The adsorption amount of hematite for Pb2+ increased from 3.92 to 9.74 mmol/kg at pH 5.0 and 20 μmol/L initial Pb2+ concentration with increasing Al content. More Fe vacancies may lead to a weaker adsorption energy (E ad) of hematite for Pb2+, while the E ad was enhanced at higher Al content. The adsorption affinity (log K Pb) of bidentate Pb complexes slightly increased while that of tridentate Pb complexes decreased with increasing Al content due to the presence of ≡ AlOH−0.5 and ≡ Fe 2 AlO−0.5 sites. Tridentate Pb complexes were dominant species on the surface of pure hematite, while bidentate ones became more dominant with increasing Al content. Fly ash (FA) is mainly composed of silica, alumina, and other metal oxide components, and has a positive stabilizing effect on soil heavy metals. Biochar composites produced from FA and corn stover (CS) can improve its remediation performance. Therefore, a batch of biochar composites (alkali-fused FA-CS biochars, ABs), synthesized via co-pyrolysis of CS and alkali-fused FA (AFFA) at different temperatures of 300, 500, and 700 °C (AB300-1, AB500-1, and AB700-1) and CS to AFFA mass ratios of 10:1, 10:2, and 10:5 (AB500-1, AB500-2, and AB500-5), was used to remediate lead (Pb)-contaminated soil. Compared with pristine biochars (BCs), ABs were enriched with oxygen-containing functional groups (Si–O–Si and Si–O) and aromatic structures. The ABs prepared at lower pyrolytic temperature (≤500 °C) and lower ratio of CS to AFFA (10:1) showed higher yield and stability. The contents of Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP)-extractable Pb and DTPA-CaCl 2 -triethanolamine (DTPA)-extractable Pb were generally lower in the soils amended with ABs than BCs. Compared with other ABs such as AB300-1, AB500-2, AB500-5, and AB700-1, the soil amended with AB500-1 had lower contents of TCLP and DTPA-extractable Pb (24% reduction), exhibiting superior performance in stabilizing Pb in the soil. The gradual decrease of DTPA-extractable Pb content in the soil with increasing dosage of AB500-1 amendments suggests that AB500-1 facilitated the conversion of bioavailable Pb to the stable and less toxic residual fractions. Specifically, the highest percentage of residual fraction of Pb in soil amended with AB500-1 was 14%. Correlation analyses showed that the soil DTPA-extractable Pb content decreased with the increase of soil pH and cation-exchange capacity (CEC) value. ABs stabilize Pb in the soils mainly via electrostatic attraction, precipitation, cation-π interaction, cation exchange, and complexation. The human health risk assessment through the dermal exposure of metal (loid)s in dust from low latitude and high geological background plateau cities was largely unknown. In this study, the road dust samples were harvested from a typical low-latitude plateau provincial capital city Kunming, Southwest China. The total concentration and dermal bioaccessibility of heavy metal (loid)s in road dust were determined, and their health risks as well as cytotoxicity on human skin keratinocytes were also assessed. The average concentrations of As (28.5 mg/kg), Cd (2.65 mg/kg), Mn (671 mg/kg), and Zn (511 mg/kg) exceeded the soil background values. Arsenic had the highest bioaccessibility after 2 h (3.79%), 8 h (4.24%), and 24 h (16.6%) extraction. The dermal pathway when bioaccessibility is considered has a higher hazard quotient than the conventional method using total metal(loid)s in the dust. In addition, toxicological verification suggested that the dust extracts suppressed the cell viability, increased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and DNA damage, and eventually activated the mitochondria-mediated apoptosis pathway, evidenced by the upregulation of Caspase-3/9, Bax, and Bak-1. Cadmium was positively correlated with the mRNA expression of Bax. The purpose of the Esteban study was to describe levels of various biomarkers of exposure to several environmental pollutants, including metals and metalloids, among the French population. This paper describes the distribution of concentrations of 28 metals and metalloids in two different populations, and estimates the main determinants of exposure to total arsenic, the sum of inorganic arsenic (iAs) and its two metabolites monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury and nickel. Esteban is a cross-sectional study conducted between 2014 and 2016 on a random sample of 2503 adults (18–74 years old) and 1104 children (6–17 years old) from the general population. The data collected included biological samples (blood, hair, and urines), socio-demographic characteristics, environmental and occupational exposure, and information on dietary factors and lifestyle. The geometric mean and percentiles of the distribution were estimated for each metal. Multivariate analyses were performed to identify the determinants of exposure using a generalized linear model. Only four metals had a quantification rate below 90% in adults (beryllium, iridium, palladium, and platinum), and three metals in children (beryllium, iridium, and platinum). The concentrations of total arsenic, cadmium, chromium and mercury were higher than those found in most international studies. The determinants significantly associated with exposure were mainly diet and smoking. Esteban provided a nationwide description of 28 metal and metalloid exposure levels for adults (some never measured before) and for the first time in children. The study results highlighted widespread exposure to several metals and metalloids. These results could be used to advocate public health decisions for continued efforts to reduce harmful exposure to toxic metals. In China, the effects of heavy metals and metalloids (HMMs) on liver health are not consistently documented, despite their prevalent environmental presence. Our research assessed the association between HMMs and liver function biomarkers in a comprehensive sample of Chinese adults. We analyzed data from 9445 participants in the China National Human Biomonitoring survey. Blood and urine were evaluated for HMM concentrations, and liver health was gauged using serum albumin (ALB), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) metrics. Various statistical methods were employed to understand the relationship between 11 HMMs and liver function, adjusting for multiple factors. We also explored interactions with alcohol intake, gender, and age. Among HMMs, selenium in blood [weighted geometric mean (GM) = 95.56 μg/L] and molybdenum in urine (GM = 46.44 μg/L) showed the highest concentrations, while lead in blood (GM = 21.92 μg/L) and arsenic in urine (GM = 19.80 μg/L) had the highest levels among risk HMMs. Manganese and thallium consistently indicated potential risk factor to liver in both sample types, while selenium displayed potential liver protection. Blood HMM mixtures were negatively associated with ALB (β = −0.614, 95% CI: −0.809, −0.418) and positively with AST (β = 0.701, 95% CI: 0.290, 1.111). No significant associations were found in urine HMM mixtures. Manganese, tin, nickel, and selenium were notable in blood mixture associations, with selenium and cobalt being significant in urine. The relationship of certain HMMs varied based on alcohol consumption. This research highlights the complex relationship between HMM exposure and liver health in Chinese adults, particularly emphasizing metals like manganese, thallium, and selenium. The results suggest a need for public health attention to low dose HMM exposure and underscore the potential benefits of selenium for liver health. The impact of air pollution on forests, especially in urban areas, has been increasingly discussed recently. Many pollutants, including heavy metals, are released into the atmosphere from various sources, such as mining, non-ferrous metal processing plants, and fossil fuel combustion. These pollutants can adversely affect not only tree growth but also other species, including humans. This study compared the concentrations of several elements in tree-ring wood from two conifer species (Silver fir, Abies alba ; Norway spruce, Picea abies) growing in polluted and unpolluted areas. Two regions in northern Romania (Bicaz and Tarnița) that were subjected to historical pollution changes were selected. Two chemical analyses were used: inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). The silver fir trees from the intensively polluted area in the Tarnița region were negatively impacted by industrial pollution: the Mn concentrations were, on average, three times higher in polluted areas than in unpolluted areas (ca. 30 vs. 10 mg kg−1). This finding was consistent for both ICP-MS and XRF analyses. However, in Norway spruce, this difference was found only in the XRF data, which detected Mn concentrations seven times higher in trees from polluted areas than those from unpolluted areas (ca. 700 vs. 100 mg kg−1). In the Tarnița region, Norway spruce accumulated more heavy metals than silver fir, but the most pronounced differences between polluted and unpolluted areas were found in silver fir. The two analytical methods are commonly used to determine metal concentrations in wood, and they complement each other, with ICP-MS having a low detection limit for some elements and XRF having higher detection limits and better accuracy. The escalating issue of air pollution has become a significant concern in urban regions, including Islamabad, Pakistan, due to the rise in air pollutant emissions driven by economic and industrial expansion. To gain a deeper understanding of air pollution, a study was conducted during winter 2022–2023, assessing physical, chemical, and biological factors in Islamabad. The findings revealed that the average concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was notably greater than the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, reaching 133.39 μg/m³. Additionally, the average concentration of bacteria (308.64 CFU/m³) was notably greater than that of fungi (203.55 CFU/m³) throughout the study. Analytical analyses, including SEM-EDS and FTIR, showed that the PM2.5 in Islamabad is composed of various particles such as soot aggregates, coal fly ash, minerals, bio-particles, and some unidentified particles. EF analysis distinguished PM2.5 sources, enhancing understanding of pollutants origin, whereas Spearman's correlation analysis elucidated constituent interactions, further explaining air quality impact. The results from the Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) indicated a gradual increase in the total elemental composition of PM2.5 from autumn to winter, maintaining high levels throughout the winter season. Furthermore, a significant variation was found in the mass concentration of PM2.5 when comparing samples collected in the morning and evening. The study also identified the presence of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in PM2.5 samples, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phenolic compounds, with notable variations in their concentrations. Microorganisms have developed mechanisms to adapt to environmental stress, but how microbial communities adapt to long-term and combined heavy-metal contamination under natural environmental conditions remains unclear. Specifically, this study analyzed the characteristics of heavy metal composition, microbial community, and heavy metal resistance genes (MRGs) in sediments along Mang River, a tributary of the Yellow River, which has been heavily polluted by industrial production for more than 40 years. The results showed that the concentrations of Cr, Zn, Pb, Cu and As in most sediments were higher than the ambient background values. Bringing the heavy metals speciation and concentration into the risk evaluation method, two-thirds of the sediment samples were at or above the moderate risk level, and the ecological risk of combined heavy metals in the sediments decreased along the river stream. The high ecological risk of heavy metals affected the microbial community structure, metabolic pathways and MRG distribution. The formation of a HM-resistant microbiome possibly occurred through the spread of insertion sequences (ISs) carrying multiple MRGs, the types of ISs carrying MRGs outnumber those of plasmids, and the quantity of MRGs on ISs is also higher than that on plasmids. Glomalin-related soil protein (GRSP) is a significant component in the sequestration of heavy metal in soils, but its mechanisms for metal adsorption are poorly known. This study combined spectroscopic data with molecular docking simulations to reveal metal adsorption onto GRSP's surface functional groups at the molecular level. The EXAFS combined with FTIR and XPS analyses indicated that the adsorption of Cd(II), Sr(II), and Ni(II) by GRSP occurred mainly through the coordination of –OH and –COOH groups with the metal. The –COOH and –OH groups bound to the metal as electron donors and the electron density of the oxygen atom decreased, suggesting that electrostatic attraction might be involved in the adsorption process. Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy revealed that preferential adsorption occurred on GRSP for the metal in sequential order of –COOH groups followed by –OH groups. The presence of the Ni–C shell in the Ni EXAFS spectrum suggested that Ni formed organometallic complexes with the GRSP surface. However, Sr–C and Cd–C were absent in the second shell of the Sr and Cd spectra, which was attributed to the adsorption of Sr and Cd ions with large hydration ion radius by GRSP to form outer-sphere complexes. Through molecular docking simulations, negatively charged residues such as ASP151 and ASP472 in GRSP were found to provide electrostatic attraction and ligand combination for the metal adsorption, which was consistent with the spectroscopic analyses. Overall, these findings provided new insights into the interaction mechanisms between GRSP and metals, which will help deepen our understanding of the ecological functions of GRSP in metal sequestration. Exposure to cadmium may increase risk of urolithiasis, but the results remain inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to access the association between cadmium exposure and urolithiasis. We searched Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, and Cochrane Central for studies. The primary outcome was the incidence of urolithiasis compared to reference groups. We used relative risk as the summary effect measure. This meta-analysis included eight observational studies and divided into 39 study populations. Among 63,051 subjects, 5018 (7.96%) individuals had urolithiasis. The results indicated that people with an increment of 0.1 μg/g creatinine in urinary cadmium had a 2% increased risk of urolithiasis (pooled relative risk [RR], 1.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01–1.03) and there is no difference in the risk of urolithiasis in high and low cadmium exposure levels. Meanwhile, people with an increment of 0.1 μg/L in urinary cadmium had a 4% increased risk of urolithiasis (pooled RR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.02–1.07). Our findings also showed similar associations in both sex, different region (Sweden, China, and Thailand), general and occupational population. The results indicate that cadmium exposure was significantly associated with an elevated risk of urolithiasis. The contribution of smelting of nonferrous metals to heavy metals in surface soil have become increasingly important over the past decade. In this study, the distribution of heavy metals around an abandoned mercury-bearing waste recovery enterprise were investigated. Soil (14) and plant (18) samples were collected in the surrounding area. The total concentration of heavy metals and methyl mercury content were measured by ICP-MS and HPLC-ICP-MS. The results show that the average contents of Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg and As in all soil samples are higher than the second-level values of Soil environmental quality-Risk control standard for soil contamination of development land (GB 36600-2018). Hg in the leaves ranged from 0.003 to 0.174 mg kg−1. Besides, the Pearson correlation analysis results indicate that Hg has a different environmental behavior compared to the other heavy metal under certain environmental or geographical conditions. But the mantel test statistical analysis results show that the Cr (P < 0.01), Cu, Pb, and Fe (P < 0.05) in the soil may have similar pollution sources with carbonate-bound mercury and iron-manganese oxide-bound mercury. The Hg concentrations show no correlation among plant leaves and soil, but significantly influenced by the distance and wind direction. These findings suggest that Hg in plant leaves may be derived from the deposition of atmospheric mercury from secondary mercury plant. In this study, we conducted an analysis of the heavy metal concentrations, health risk assessment, fraction and source interpretation in surface and core sediments from main stream of the Pearl River and Pearl River Estuary (RRE) area. Results showed that the higher deposited heavy metal concentrations in sediments occur at the Pearl River. The concentrations of heavy metals in surface sediments from the studied locations are in a descending order: Zn > Cr > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd. Regarding chemical fractions, Cd showed the highest proportion of acid soluble fraction (F1) among all studied heavy metals. The high mobility of Cd poses a significant threat to water bodies and the surrounding environment. The potential ecological risk index (RI) showed the Pearl River sediments exhibited significantly higher values than the estuary sediments. Cd was found to be the primary contributor to potential ecological risk, accounting for 74% of RI. The health risk assessment showed the total hazard index (HI) for child was exceeded 1 mainly driven by Zn, indicating that the child population was at risk of non-carcinogenic effects. Besides, unacceptable carcinogenic risk in both Pearl River and estuary area were observed for children. The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was used to ascertain sources of six heavy metals and apportion their contributions in sediments. Soil health is integral to sustainable agroecosystem management. Current monitoring and assessment practices primarily focus on soil physicochemical properties, yet the perspective of multitrophic biodiversity remains underexplored. Here we used environmental DNA (eDNA) technology to monitor multitrophic biodiversity in four typical agroecosystems, and analyzed the species composition and diversity changes in fungi, bacteria and metazoan, and combined with the traditional physicochemical variables to establish a soil health assessment framework centered on biodiversity data. First, eDNA technology detected rich multitrophic biodiversity in four agroecosystems, including 100 phyla, 273 classes, 611 orders, 1026 families, 1668 genera and 1146 species with annotated classification, and the relative sequence abundance of dominant taxa fluctuates tens of times across agroecosystems. Second, significant differences in soil physicochemical variables such as organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN) and available phosphorus (AP) were observed among different agroecosystems, nutrients were higher in cropland and rice paddies, while heavy metals were higher in fish ponds and lotus ponds. Third, biodiversity metrics, including α and β diversity, also showed significant changes across agroecosystems, the soil biota was generally more sensitive to nutrients (e.g., OM, TN or AP), while the fungal communities were mainly affected by heavy metals in October (e.g., Cu and Cr). Finally, we screened 48 sensitive organismal indicators and found significant positive consistency between the developed eDNA indices and the traditional soil quality index (SQI, reaching up to R 2  = 0.58). Microplastics (MPs) pollution has raised serious environmental concerns due to its widespread generation and discharge across global ecosystems. It is estimated that approximately 400 million metric tons of plastic are produced annually, with 54% ending up as waste. The MPs account for a significant portion of this pollution. These MPs interact with heavy metals (HMs) in terrestrial ecosystems, such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As), which are introduced through various industrial activities at rates of thousands of tons per year. Such interactions may cause synergistic or antagonistic effects on plants. Recent studies suggest that MPs and HMs exposure impacts various physiological and biochemical pathways in plants, thereby increasing the toxicity symptoms. However, the existing scholarly understanding of the coupled effect of HMs and MPs on plants is limited, highlighting the need to explore these complex dynamics further. Through a comprehensive analysis of current research, this review underscores various pathways of MPs and HMs infiltration mechanisms, detailing their penetration, translocation, and bioaccumulation within plants. The physiological and biochemical effects of both pollutants on plants are deliberated individually and in combination. The review reveals that the co-existence of these contaminants results in a multifaceted environmental challenge, affecting overall plant growth, yield, and quality in ways that differ from individual exposure. Particle size effects significantly impact the concentration and toxicity of heavy metals (HMs) in dust. Nevertheless, the differences in concentrations, sources, and risks of HMs in dust with different particle sizes are unclear. Therefore, guided by the definition of atmospheric particulate matter, dust samples with particle sizes under 1000 μm (DT 1000 ), 100 μm (DT 100 ), and 63 μm (DT 63 ) from Beijing kindergartens were collected. The concentrations of HMs (e.g., Cd, Pb, Zn, Ni, Cr, Ba, Cu, V, Mn, Co, and Ti) in dust samples with different particle sizes were measured. Besides, the differences in HM concentrations, contamination levels, sources, and source-oriented health risks in dust samples of different particle sizes were systematically explored. The results show that the concentrations of Mn, V, Zn, and Cd gradually increase with decreasing dust particle sizes, the concentrations of Ba and Pb show a decreasing trend, and the concentrations of Cr, Cu, Ni, and Co display an increasing and then decreasing trend. The degree of contamination of HMs in dust of different particle sizes varies, with Cd being the most dominant contaminant. Compared with DT 1000 and DT 63 , DT 100 is the most polluted. In addition, the sources of HMs in DT 1000 , DT 100 , and DT 63 become more single with decreasing particle size, which may be mainly due to the particle-size effect inducing the redistribution of HMs in different sources. Notably, the potential health risk is higher in DT 100 than in DT 1000 and DT 63 . The highest contribution of industrial sources to the health risk is found in DT 100 , which is mainly caused by highly toxic chromium (Cr). Due to metal toxicity, widespread industrialization has negatively impacted crop yield and soil quality. The current study was aimed to prepare and characterize biochar made from wood shavings of Pinus roxburghii and to determine the plant growth promoting and heavy metal detoxification of cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) contaminated soil. FTIR SEM coupled with EDX characterization of biochar was performed; Cd and Cr were used at a rate of 20 mg/kg. Biochar was used at the rate of 50 mg/kg for various treatments. The completely randomized design (CRD) was used for the experiment and three replicates of each treatment were made. Various agronomic and enzymatic parameters were determined. The results indicated that all growth and enzymatic parameters were enhanced by the prepared biochar treatments. The most prominent results were observed in treatment T5 (in which shoot length, root length, peroxidase dismutase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) catalyzes (CAT), and chlorophyll a and b increased by 28%, 23%, 40%, 41%, 42%, and 27%, respectively, compared to the control). This study demonstrated that biochar is a sustainable and cost-effective approach for the remediation of heavy metals, and plays a role in plant growth promotion. Farmers may benefit from the current findings, as prepared biochar is easier to deliver and more affordable than chemical fertilizers. Sodium alginate (SA) emerges as a promising adsorbent for the remediation of heavy metal-polluted wastewater. However, the systematic investigations on how and the extent to which the various compositions in real water matrices impact its performance were essential but rare when considering its use. Here, we explored the effect of common environmental factors on Cu(II) adsorption by an as-synthesized SA-based hydrogel (SAH). The result showed that high concentration of organics (above 10 mg·L -1 ) had a negative influence on heavy metal removal (decreased by 9.45 % at least), while inorganic ion, turbidity and antibiotics at relatively low concentrations exhibited a negligible even promoting effect (increased by 9.8 % with the presence of 5 mg·L -1 Nor). Based on above results and corresponding mechanism analyses, the possible applicable and unsuitable scenarios of SAH can be predicted. SAH could be a great candidate for treating heavy metal-polluted water such as river and lake water, while it is not a good option for electroplating or livestock wastewater which contains high concentration of organic matters. The management of drinking water treatment residuals (DWTRs) poses significant environmental and economic challenges for water treatment facilities; however, these residues have considerable potential as effective adsorbents for pollutant removal. The objectives of this review are to evaluate research conducted from 2015 to 2024 on treatment and modification techniques aimed at enhancing DWTRs' efficacy as adsorbents, analyze the influence of preparation methods on DWTRs performance, evaluate DWTRs adsorbents for different pollutants, and discuss the limitations and challenges in DWTRs applications. The review addresses the knowledge gap by detailed analysis of these advanced modification methods, which have not been extensively reviewed before, and their direct impact on the physicochemical properties and adsorption performance of DWTRs. The review explores various methods including thermal treatment, chemical activation, granulation, pelletization, and the development of composite materials. Key findings indicate that thermal treatment significantly increases surface area and porosity, while chemical activation introduces functional groups that enhance adsorption capacity. Composite DWTRs, incorporating metals, organic compounds, or magnetic properties, demonstrate superior performance in adsorbing diverse contaminants such as dyes and heavy metals. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly in reporting the life cycles and costs of the treated and modified DWTRs and the regeneration of spent adsorbents. The review highlights the importance of optimizing preparation techniques to enhance the physicochemical properties and adsorption performance of DWTRs. Human biomonitoring of toxic and essential trace elements is critically important for public health protection. Amazonian riverine communities exhibit distinctive dietary patterns, heavily reliant on locally sourced fish, fruits, and vegetables. These habits may result in unique exposure profiles compared to urban populations. However, comprehensive assessments of their exposure to toxic and essential metals are lacking, representing a critical gap in understanding the health risks faced by these communities. This study aimed to establish baseline levels of 21 metals and metalloids in human blood and explore the influence of sociodemographic factors, dietary habits, and lifestyle choices as potential sources of exposure to these elements. A cross-sectional biomonitoring investigation was conducted with 1,024 individuals from 13 communities in the Tapajós and Amazon Basins (Pará, Brazil). Most of the elements in study was determined for the first time in the region. Blood samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The levels of all elements were summarized by quantiles and compared with cutoff values from other Brazilian populations. Multiple linear regression was used to assess possible associations between element concentrations and sociodemographic characteristics, dietary habits, and lifestyle choices. High detection rates (64%–100%) were observed, indicating the widespread presence of these elements. Elevated blood concentrations were found for mercury (median 21.1 μg.L−1, interquartile range: 12–34 μg.L−1), selenium (median 166 μg.L−1, interquartile range: 137–208 μg.L−1), and lead (median 34 μg.L−1, interquartile range: 20.8–64 μg.L−1). Regression analysis revealed a positive association between mercury levels and fish consumption, while manioc flour intake showed no relationship to lead levels. In conclusion, our findings emphasize the need for continued monitoring and public policy development for these vulnerable populations. Antibacterial resistance in wild animals has been increasingly reported worldwide, even though they are usually not directly exposed to clinically relevant antibiotics. Crested ibis, one of the rarest birds in the world, usually forages in paddy fields and prefer to nest and breed near villages that is greatly influenced by anthropogenic activities. We sampled the feces of crested ibises, as well as their habitat environment samples, to explore the pollution characteristics of heavy metals, antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Results showed that the pollution characteristics of heavy metals, antibiotic, ARGs and gut microbiota of crested ibis were more related by host lifestyle and habitats. Captive ibises had higher relative abundances of the total ARGs and tetracycline concentrations compared with feralization and wild ibises, while the heavy metal contents had shown the opposite result. The Characteristics of pollutants in the corresponding environmental samples also exhibited high similarity with the results of fecal samples. The relative abundances of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were significantly different between captive and wild individuals, while the abundance of majority bacterial genera was generally higher in wild populations. The concentrations of heavy metals in soil (Cd, Cu and Zn) and water (Cd, Cu, Zn and Cr) were both exceeded the background soil levels or surface water quality standards, suggesting multi-element contamination in the habitat. Ecological risk assessments of soils by I geo and E r showed that the habitats of wild ibises were heavily and moderately contaminated by Cd, which would possibly pose a threat to the health of ibises. PLS-PM analysis indicated that microbial compositions and residual antibiotics had the most substantial impact on the dynamic changes in ARGs of ibis. Overall, this work provides a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics, risks of those contaminations, and their effects on the ARGs in the habitat of crested ibis. The characterisation of hydrochars derived from Sargassum biomass collected along the Mexican Caribbean coast reveals their favourable morphology and chemical composition for incorporating metal ions, including Cd(II) and Pb(II). Among the synthesized materials, HCS-3, produced at 180 °C with a 2 h residence time, exhibited superior yield, specific area, carbon content, and capacity for removing Cd(II) and Pb(II). Adsorption equilibrium studies demonstrate the presence of adsorption processes during Cd(II) and Pb(II) retention on HCS-3, with adsorption capacities slightly exceeding 140 and 340 mg g⁻1, respectively. Notably, HCS-3 shows a greater affinity for Pb(II) over Cd(II) when both elements are present concurrently. The physicochemical analysis through FTIR spectroscopy, functional group analysis, point of zero charge determination, SEM/EDS, and other techniques evidenced that HCS-3 possesses favourable characteristics to serve as a heavy metal adsorbent. These findings underscore the efficacy of hydrochars from Sargassum biomass in removing heavy metals, suggesting their potential as superior adsorbents compared to traditional or novel materials, and advising its possible versatility for other pollutants. Landfill leachate-containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is both an important 'sink' and a 'source' of secondary pollution, posing serious threaten to surrounding environments. To date, the pollution characteristics of PFAS in landfill leachate, and the coexistence and interaction between PFAS and other leachate contaminants, such as dissolved organic matter (DOM) and toxic metals remains unclear. Herein, our results showed that 17 target PFAS, with concentrations ranged from 1804 to 43309 ng/L, were detected in landfill leachates. The main PFAS were short-chain and even-chain substances represented by perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS). Leachate derived DOM is mainly composed of protein-like and humic-like substance, among which the total contribution of protein-like substance is as high as 73.7%. Correlation analysis results showed that the distribution of PFAS was strongly correlated with the substituted functional groups (e.g., carboxyl and hydroxyl) on the aromatic ring of humic-like substance (C2 and E 253 /E 203) and autochthonous metabolism by microbial activities (FI). Furthermore, Mn element showed a significantly strong correlation with PFAS. Both organic and inorganic substances positively correlated with toxic metals. Our findings are helpful to understand the environmental fate of PFAS, and contribute to decision-making regarding DOM, toxic metals, and PFAS management in landfill. This study investigates the contamination level, spatial distribution, pollution sources, potential ecological risks, and human health risks associated with heavy metal(loid)s (i.e., arsenic (As), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)) in surface soils within the mining region of Matehuala, located in central Mexico. The primary objectives are to estimate the contamination level of heavy metal(loid)s, identify pollution sources, assess potential ecological risks, and evaluate human health risks associated with heavy metal(loid) contamination. Soil samples from the study area were analysed using various indices including Igeo, Cf, PLI, mCd, EF, and PERI to evaluate contamination levels. Source apportionment of heavy metal(loid)s was conducted using the APCS-MLR and PMF receptor models. Spatial distribution patterns were determined using the most efficient interpolation technique among five different approaches. The total carcinogenic risk index (TCR) and total non-carcinogenic index (THI) were used in this study to assess the potential carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic hazards posed by heavy metal(loid)s in surface soil to human health. The study reveals a high contamination level of heavy metal(loid)s in the surface soil, posing considerable ecological risks. As was identified as a priority metal for regulatory control measures. Mining and smelting activities were identified as the primary factors influencing heavy metal(loid) distributions. Based on spatial distribution mapping, concentrations were higher in the northern, western, and central regions of the study area. As and Fe were found to pose considerable and moderate ecological risks, respectively. Health risk evaluation indicated significant levels of carcinogenic risks for both adults and children, with higher risks for children. The main aim of this review is to provide a holistic summary of the latest advances within the research area focusing on the detection of heavy metal ion pollution, particularly the sensing strategies. The review explores various heavy metal ion detection approaches, encompassing spectrometry, electrochemical methods, and optical techniques. Numerous initiatives have been undertaken in recent times in response to the increasing demand for fast, sensitive, and selective sensors. Notably, fluorescent sensors have acquired prominence owing to the numerous advantages such as good specificity, reversibility, and sensitivity. Further, this review also explores the advantages of various nanomaterials employed in sensing heavy metal ions. In this regard, exclusive emphasis is placed on fluorescent nanomaterials based on organic dyes, quantum dots, and fluorescent aptasensors for metal ion removal from aqueous systems, and to identify the fate of heavy metal ions in the natural environment. This study involves synthesizing peanut hull hydrochar (PHH) and a PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4 magnetic composite through hydrothermal and chemical precipitation methods, respectively, to use as effective adsorbents for Pb2+ removal. Vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses revealed that the magnetic saturation value and specific active surface area of PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4 are 31.543 emu/g and 32.123 m2/g, respectively. The impact of key variables on adsorption efficiency was evaluated using the response surface method - central composite design. ANOVA results (F-value: 166.22 and p-value: <0.05) demonstrated that the model effectively assesses the interaction of variables in the adsorption process. Additionally, R2, Adjusted R2, and Predicted R2 values were 0.999, 0.986, and 0.975, respectively, indicating the model's high adequacy in describing response changes. The maximum efficiency for Pb2+ adsorption was found to be 95.35% using PHH and 99.73% with the PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4 magnetic composite. These measurements were taken at a temperature of 25 °C, an adsorbent dose of 1 g/L, a pH of 6, and a Pb2+ concentration of 5 mg/L, with respective contact times of 130 min and 50 min. Thermodynamic analysis revealed negative enthalpy and Gibbs free energy values, indicating that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. The negative entropy parameter suggests a reduction in random interactions during the process. The Pb2+ adsorption data for both PHH (R2: 0.982) and PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4 (R2: 0.985) were best described by the Pseudo 2nd order kinetic model. Equilibrium data followed the Freundlich model, with R2 values of 0.981 for PHH and 0.990 for PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4 , highlighting the importance of heterogeneous surfaces in the removal process. The maximum adsorption capacities for Pb2+ were 26.72 mg/g for PHH and 33.88 mg/g for PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4. Reuse and stability tests confirmed the structural stability and reusability of the adsorbents. Industrial facilities across the United States (US) release millions of pounds of toxic chemicals, including metals. Exposure to toxic metals has been associated with adverse health outcomes, but there is limited evidence on the association between living near metal-releasing facilities and the body burden of emitted compounds. To investigate the association between residential proximity to toxic metal-emitting industrial facilities and toenail metal concentrations and to evaluate whether associations differed by race. In a sample of 1556 non-Hispanic Black (32.5%) and non-Hispanic White (67.5%) women from the Sister Study, we used the US Environmental Protection Agency Toxics Release Inventory to identify metal-emitting facilities within 3, 5, and 10 km of participants' baseline residences. We measured toenail concentrations (μg/g) of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, and lead. Using multivariable linear regression, we examined associations between residential proximity to and emissions from metal-emitting facilities and toenail metal concentrations, stratifying by race. We explored modification of race-stratified associations by neighborhood deprivation, using the Area Deprivation Index (ADI). Black participants were more likely to reside within 3 km of chromium-releasing facilities and 5 and 10 km of all observed metal-emitting sites. Living near metal-releasing facilities was not associated with higher toenail metal concentrations overall. Among Black women, higher chromium emissions exposure was associated with higher toenail chromium levels (β Tertile3vs.non-exposed = 2.36 μg/g, 95% CI = 0.63, 4.10). An association with lead was observed among Black women residing in the most deprived areas (≥75th ADI percentile: β = 3.08 μg/g, 95% CI = 1.46, 4.71). No associations were observed for White participants. Despite low exposure prevalence, our findings suggest that living near chromium- and lead-releasing facilities, especially at shorter distances, may be associated with higher corresponding toenail metal levels among Black women, particularly those residing in the most disadvantaged areas. • We evaluated toenail metal levels and residential proximity to industrial sites. • No associations were observed among non-Hispanic (NH) White women. • Increased Cr emissions were related to higher Cr toenail levels for NH Black women. • Proximity to Pb sites was associated with higher toenail Pb levels in Black women in deprived areas. A silica gel-modified borage biochar (BB@Si) was first produced and used as a binding agent for potentially hazardous Ni2+ ions in aqueous systems. The recommended biochar was more effective in eliminating Ni2+ than pristine biochar (BB). Its maximum q m could reach up to 1.39 × 10−3 mol/g at 30 °C, and sorption isotherms showed that the Langmuir model could more accurately define its sorption behavior. The Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm also revealed that the average sorption energy ranged from 11.00 to 11.14 kJ/mol. Zeta potential tests, SEM images, and FT-IR scans confirmed the interactions between BB@Si and Ni2+ ions. Dynamic flow treatment studies showed high uptake effectiveness when the flow rate and amount of BB@Si were suitable. Nickel desorption yield of around 80% from BB@Si was noted with 0.01 M HCl. The BB@Si column's breakthrough and exhausted points were identified to be 45 and 352 min, respectively. Its maximum exhaustion capacity value was determined to be 52.73 mg/g. Ni2+ removal from the actual wastewater sample exceeded 75%. The resulting outcomes imply the immense potential of employing BB@Si in the treatment of Ni2+– contaminated aqueous systems. Birds are good bioindicators of disturbance in the environment. They are present in different habitats and trophic levels. In addition, rapid urbanization has led birds to use cities as shelter and for seeking food resources. Sewage treatment plants (STPs) are suitable locations for free-living birds within cities. However, few studies address the impacts of emerging pollutants from sewage treatment plants on wild birds. In this sense, the aim of this study was to analyze the genotoxic, mutagenic, and immunological impacts from metal and pollutant exposure on free-living birds collected at a STP. For comparison, birds were collected in a preserved environment, the Silvania National Forest (FLONA). To achieve this, we used non-destructive biomarkers sensitive to environmental changes. Birds were collected in both environments using mist nets. After collection, birds were weighed, measured, species-identified, and released. Blood was collected for comet assay, micronucleus test, and leukocyte profile, while feathers were collected for metal concentration analysis. Water physicochemical parameters were measured at both sites, and water samples were collected for metal analysis. Our results demonstrated that birds collected at the STP exhibit a higher frequency of genotoxic damage and erythrocyte abnormalities, and increased immune response compared to FLONA birds. Traces of potentially toxic metals, such as Hg and As, were found in the birds feathers from both environments, raising concerns about metal contamination in both environments. Trophic guilds appear to respond similarly to exposure. The parameters and metals found in the water reflect environmental characteristics and may be influencing pollutant availability. Finally, despite the advancement of our findings, studies linking these damages to detrimental effects on behavior and reproduction are encouraged. Human activities have changed the natural rates at which metals are moved and accumulated in both land and water environments, resulting in negative impacts on local wildlife. In this study, concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb, Cu, Mn, Co, and Zn were evaluated in water and riverbed sediment samples collected from the Verde River basin (VR), as well as in tissue samples from five native Loricariidae species. Sediment samples collected from the central section of the VR riverbed indicated the presence of metal concentrations, which were primarily attributed to scattered pollution sources linked to rural activities in the surrounding areas. The bioconcentration factor in the Loricariids liver presented the highest average values for Zn (1.27–58.21), Co (0.48–14.91) and Cu (1.15–11.14). The same pattern was observed in the muscle, but in a lower proportion. Regarding the bioaccumulation factor, Co (1.54–34.84), Cu (5.85–25.22) and Zn (0.64–18.08) attained the highest average values in the liver. The co-inertia analysis examined the spatial distribution of metal concentrations in riverbed sediments and in tissues of Loricariids from the upper, middle, and lower stretches of the river, including the river mouth. The analysis revealed varying patterns, with samples from some regions showing higher bioaccumulation levels. This suggests that riverbed sediments are a primary source of metal contamination in Loricariids from these areas. The pollution has had a significant impact on the bioaccumulation of metals in the VR ' Loricariids, which are good indicators of sediment-associated metal bioaccumulation. The metal concentrations recorded in both the riverbed sediments and Loricariids surpassed international and Brazilian limits set for aquatic health and safe human consumption. Given the importance of the Verde River in terms of its ecological, social, cultural, and economic roles, it is essential to implement biomonitoring and control measures to safeguard both terrestrial and aquatic resources.
