Background: While modeled estimates and studies in contaminated areas indicate high lead exposure among children in Bihar, India, local data on lead exposure in the child population is limited., Objectives: To characterize lead exposure, and assess potential sources of lead exposure among a state-representative sample of children and their pregnant mothers residing in Bihar., Methods: Blood samples were collected from 697 children under five and 55 pregnant women from eight districts in Bihar. Blood lead levels were determined using capillary blood and a portable lead analyzer. Household demographics, home environment, behavior, and nutrition information were collected through computer-assisted personal interviews with primary caregivers. Logistic regression was used to assess associations between potential risk factors and elevated blood lead levels., Results: More than 90% of children and 80% of pregnant women reported blood lead levels ≥5 μg/dL. Living near a lead-related industry and pica behavior of eating soil were significantly associated with increased odds of having elevated blood lead levels. Additional risk factors for having a blood level ≥5 μg/dL included the use of skin lightning cream (aOR = 5.11, 95%CI: 1.62, 16.16) and the use of eyeliners (aOR = 2.81, 95%CI: 1.14, 6.93). Tail resorption during amphibian metamorphosis is one of the most dramatic processes that is obligatorily dependent on thyroid hormone (TH). Heavy metals could result in thyroid gland damages and disturb TH homeostasis. Lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) often co-exist in natural aquatic ecosystems. However, there is still little information on how tail resorption responds to alone or combined exposure to Pb and Cu. Our study investigated the effects of Pb and Cu alone or combined exposure on the morphological parameters of the tail, histological changes of thyroid gland and tail, and gene expression programs involved in cell death of the tail in Bufo gargarizans tadpoles at the climax of metamorphosis. Results demonstrated that Pb, Cu and Pb-Cu mixture exposure resulted in a significantly longer tail compared with control. Damages to notochord, muscle, skin and spinal cord of the tail were found in Pb and Cu exposure groups. The colloid area, the height of follicular cells and number of phagocytic vesicles of thyroid gland in Pb-Cu mixture exposure groups were significantly reduced. In addition, the expression levels of TH, apoptosis, autophagy, degradation of cellular components and oxidative stress-related genes in the tail were significantly altered following Pb and Cu exposure. This study involves synthesizing peanut hull hydrochar (PHH) and a PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4 magnetic composite through hydrothermal and chemical precipitation methods, respectively, to use as effective adsorbents for Pb 2+ removal. Vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses revealed that the magnetic saturation value and specific active surface area of PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4 are 31.543 emu/g and 32.123 m 2 /g, respectively. The impact of key variables on adsorption efficiency was evaluated using the response surface method - central composite design. ANOVA results (F-value: 166.22 and p-value: <0.05) demonstrated that the model effectively assesses the interaction of variables in the adsorption process. Additionally, R 2 , Adjusted R 2 , and Predicted R 2 values were 0.999, 0.986, and 0.975, respectively, indicating the model's high adequacy in describing response changes. The maximum efficiency for Pb 2+ adsorption was found to be 95.35% using PHH and 99.73% with the PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4 magnetic composite. These measurements were taken at a temperature of 25 °C, an adsorbent dose of 1 g/L, a pH of 6, and a Pb 2+ concentration of 5 mg/L, with respective contact times of 130 min and 50 min. Thermodynamic analysis revealed negative enthalpy and Gibbs free energy values, indicating that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. The negative entropy parameter suggests a reduction in random interactions during the process. The Pb 2+ adsorption data for both PHH (R 2 : 0.982) and PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4 (R 2 : 0.985) were best described by the Pseudo 2nd order kinetic model. Equilibrium data followed the Freundlich model, with R 2 values of 0.981 for PHH and 0.990 for PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4 , highlighting the importance of heterogeneous surfaces in the removal process. The maximum adsorption capacities for Pb 2+ were 26.72 mg/g for PHH and 33.88 mg/g for PHH/β-CD/Fe 3 O 4 . Reuse and stability tests confirmed the structural stability and reusability of the adsorbents. In this study, pomegranate seed waste (PSW) was added into sand filter (SF) to increase removal efficiency of Lead (Pb(II)) and Copper (Cu(II)) from polluted water. The performance of PSW was compared with activated carbon (AC) as a typical adsorbent. Based on the SEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD, BET and proximate analyses, PSW had porous structure with specific surface area of 2.76 m 2 /g and active compounds which suggested PSW as an appropriate adsorbent for heavy metals (HMs) adsorption. According to the batch experiments, SF without treatment could only remove 46% and 35% of Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. These numbers increased to 88% and 75% for Pb(II) and Cu(II) by adding 3 g/kg PSW to the SF, respectively under the optimal conditions of HMs initial concentrations = 100 mg/L, pH = 7 and contact time = 60 min. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm followed the pseudo-first-order and Langmuir models, respectively indicating that mainly physisorption was involved in the HMs adsorption process of PSW. Based on the column experiments (flow rate = 62.5 mL/min), the Pb(II) and Cu(II) removal increased from 14% to 60% and 10%-55%, respectively after 5 pore volumes (40 min) by adding 3 g/kg PSW to the SF. Breakthrough curves matched better with Thomas mode rather than Adam's Bohart proving Langmuir adsorption isotherm. To address the urgent need for efficient removal of lead-containing wastewater and reduce the risk of toxicity associated with heavy-metal wastewater contamination, materials with high removal rates and easy separation must be developed. Herein, a novel organic-inorganic hybrid material based on phosphorylated magnetic chitosan (MSCP) was synthesized and applied for the selective removal of lead (II) from wastewater. From the characterization and the experimental results can be obtained that the magnetic saturation strength of MSCP reaches 14.65 emu/g, which can be separated quickly and regenerated readily, and maintains high adsorption performance even after 5 cycles, indicating that the adsorbent possesses good magnetic separation performance and durability. Also, MSCP showed high selective adsorption performance for lead in the multiple metal ions coexistence solutions at pH 6.0 and room temperature, with an adsorption coefficient S Pb-MSCP of 78.85%, which was much higher than that of MSC (the S Pb-MSC was 11.59%). Additionally, in the single lead system, the sorption characteristics of Pb(II) on MSCP and MCP had obvious pH-responsiveness, and their adsorption capacity increased with the increase of solution pH, reaching the maximal values of 80.19 and 72.68 mg/g, respectively. It is noteworthy that the acid resistance of MSCP with an inert layer coated on the core is significantly improved, with almost no iron leaching from MSCP over the entire acidity range, while MCP has 7.63 mg/g of iron leaching at pH 1.0. Significantly, MSCP exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 102.04 mg/g, which matches the Langmuir model at pH 6.0 and 298.15 K, and points to the pseudo-second-order kinetics of the chemisorption process of Pb(II) on MSCP. Lead contaminated soil is a persistent global threat to the health of animal populations. Nevertheless, links between soil lead and its adverse effects on exposed wildlife remain poorly understood. Here, we explore local geographic patterns of exposure in urban birds along a gradient of lead contamination in Broken Hill, an Australian mining city. Soil lead concentrations are linked to co-located blood lead measurements in rock pigeons (Columba livia), house sparrows (Passer domesticus), crested pigeons (Ocyphaps lophotes) and white-plumed honeyeaters (Lichenostomus ornatus). Median blood lead levels were highest in crested pigeons (59.6 μg/dL), followed by house sparrows (35.2 μg/dL), rock pigeons (35.1 μg/dL), and white-plumed honeyeaters (27.4 μg/dL). Blood lead levels in all species declined away from mining areas, the primary source of lead contamination in Broken Hill. Blood lead increased significantly and at the greatest rate relative to soil lead in the three ground foraging species (crested pigeons, house sparrows, rock pigeons). For these species, soil lead concentrations below 200 mg/kg and 900 mg/kg were needed to maintain a median blood lead concentration under the lower threshold of the subtoxic (20-50 μg/dL) and toxic (≥50 μg/dL) effect ranges previously identified for some bird species. We also investigated the effects of lead exposure on blood haemoglobin levels as a general measure of physiological condition in birds exposed to different levels of soil lead contamination. Overall, for every 1 μg/dL increase in blood lead, haemoglobin decreased by 0.11 g/L. The rate of this decrease was not significantly different between species, which supports the measurement of haemoglobin as a consistent though insensitive measure of physiological condition in chronically lead exposed birds. Chronic lead (Pb) exposure causes neurodysfunction and contributes to the development of neurodegenerative disease. However, the mechanism of Pb-induced neurological dysfunction have yet to be fully elucidated. This study determined the role pyroptosis plays in Pb-induced neurodysfunction in neurons. We used both in vitro and in vivo approaches to explore whether Pb exposure induces caspase-1-mediated pyroptosis in neurons and its relationship to Pb-induced neurological disorders. Our findings showed that caspase-1-mediated pyroptosis in Pb-exposed neurons activated glycogen synthase kinase 3 protease activity by disrupting Ca 2+ /calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II/cAMP-response element binding protein pathway, leading to neurological disorders. Moreover, the caspase-1 inhibition VX-765 or the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug sodium para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS-Na) attenuated the Pb-induced neurological disorders by alleviating caspase-1 mediated neuronal pyroptosis. Lead ammunition stands out as one of the most pervasive pollutants affecting wildlife. Its impact on bird populations have spurred efforts for the phase-out of leaded gunshot in several countries, although with varying scopes and applications. Ongoing and future policy changes require data to assess the effectiveness of adopted measures, particularly in the current context of biodiversity loss. Here, we assessed the long-term changes in blood lead (Pb) levels of Egyptian vultures from the Canary Islands, Spain, which have been severely affected by Pb poisoning over the past two decades. During this period, the reduction in hunting pressure and changes in legislation regarding firearms usage for small game hunting likely contributed to a decrease in environmental Pb availability. As anticipated, our results show a reduction in Pb levels, especially after the ban on wild rabbit hunting with shotgun since 2010. This effect was stronger in the preadult fraction of the vulture population. However, we still observed elevated blood Pb levels above the background and clinical thresholds in 5.6% and 1.5% of individuals, respectively. Our results highlight the positive impact of reducing the availability of Pb from ammunition sources on individual health. Nonetheless, the continued use of Pb gunshot remains an important source of poisoning, even lethal, mainly affecting adult individuals. This poses a particular concern for long-lived birds, compounding by potential chronic effects associated with Pb bioaccumulation. Our findings align with recent studies indicating insufficient reductions in Pb levels among European birds of prey, attributed to limited policy changes and their uneven implementation. Fly ash (FA) is mainly composed of silica, alumina, and other metal oxide components, and has a positive stabilizing effect on soil heavy metals. Biochar composites produced from FA and corn stover (CS) can improve its remediation performance. Therefore, a batch of biochar composites (alkali-fused FA-CS biochars, ABs), synthesized via co-pyrolysis of CS and alkali-fused FA (AFFA) at different temperatures of 300, 500, and 700 °C (AB300-1, AB500-1, and AB700-1) and CS to AFFA mass ratios of 10:1, 10:2, and 10:5 (AB500-1, AB500-2, and AB500-5), was used to remediate lead (Pb)-contaminated soil. Compared with pristine biochars (BCs), ABs were enriched with oxygen-containing functional groups (Si-O-Si and Si-O) and aromatic structures. The ABs prepared at lower pyrolytic temperature (≤500 °C) and lower ratio of CS to AFFA (10:1) showed higher yield and stability. The contents of Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP)-extractable Pb and DTPA-CaCl 2 -triethanolamine (DTPA)-extractable Pb were generally lower in the soils amended with ABs than BCs. Compared with other ABs such as AB300-1, AB500-2, AB500-5, and AB700-1, the soil amended with AB500-1 had lower contents of TCLP and DTPA-extractable Pb (24% reduction), exhibiting superior performance in stabilizing Pb in the soil. The gradual decrease of DTPA-extractable Pb content in the soil with increasing dosage of AB500-1 amendments suggests that AB500-1 facilitated the conversion of bioavailable Pb to the stable and less toxic residual fractions. Specifically, the highest percentage of residual fraction of Pb in soil amended with AB500-1 was 14%. Correlation analyses showed that the soil DTPA-extractable Pb content decreased with the increase of soil pH and cation-exchange capacity (CEC) value. ABs stabilize Pb in the soils mainly via electrostatic attraction, precipitation, cation-π interaction, cation exchange, and complexation. Hematite nanoparticles commonly undergoes isomorphic substitution of Al 3+ in nature, while how the Al-substitution-induced morphological change, defective structure and newly generated Al-OH sites affect the adsorption behavior of hematite for contaminants remains poorly understood. Herein, the interfacial reactions between Al-substituted hematite and Pb 2+ was investigated via CD-MUSIC modeling and DFT calculations. As the Al content increased from 0% to 9.4%, Al-substitution promoted the proportion of (001) facets and caused Fe vacancies on hematite, which increased the total active site density of hematite from 5.60 to 17.60 sites/nm 2 . The surface positive charge of hematite significantly increased from 0.096 to 0.418 C/m 2 at pH 5.0 due to the increases in site density and proton affinity (logK H ) of hematite under Al-substitution. The adsorption amount of hematite for Pb 2+ increased from 3.92 to 9.74 mmol/kg at pH 5.0 and 20 μmol/L initial Pb 2+ concentration with increasing Al content. More Fe vacancies may lead to a weaker adsorption energy (E ad ) of hematite for Pb 2+ , while the E ad was enhanced at higher Al content. The adsorption affinity (logK Pb ) of bidentate Pb complexes slightly increased while that of tridentate Pb complexes decreased with increasing Al content due to the presence of ≡ AlOH -0.5 and ≡ Fe 2 AlO -0.5 sites. Tridentate Pb complexes were dominant species on the surface of pure hematite, while bidentate ones became more dominant with increasing Al content. Quorum sensing (QS) is prevalent in activated sludge processes; however, its essential role in the treatment of heavy metal wastewater has rarely been studied. Therefore, in this study, acyl homoserine lactone (AHL)-mediated QS was used to regulate the removal performance, enzyme activity, and microbial community of Cd- and Pb-containing wastewater in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) over 30 cycles. The results showed that exogenous AHL strengthened the removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in their coexistence wastewater during the entire period. The removal of NH 4 + -N, total phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was also enhanced by the addition of AHL despite the coexistence of Cd(II) and Pb(II). Meanwhile, the protein content of extracellular polymeric substances was elevated and the microbial metabolism and antioxidative response were stimulated by the addition of AHL, which was beneficial for resistance to heavy metal stress and promoted pollutant removal by activated sludge. Microbial sequencing indicated that AHL optimized the microbial community structure, with the abundance of dominant taxa Proteobacteria and Unclassified&#95;f&#95;Enterobacteriaceae increasing by 73.9% and 59.2% maximally, respectively. Microplastics and heavy metals are ubiquitous and persistent contaminants that are widely distributed worldwide, yet little is known about the effects of their interaction on soil ecosystems. A soil incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the individual and combined effects of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) and lead (Pb) on soil enzymatic activities, microbial biomass, respiration rate, and community diversity. The results indicate that the presence of PE-MPs notably reduced soil pH and elevated soil Pb bioavailability, potentially exacerbated the combined toxicity on the biogeochemical cycles of soil nutrients, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, and the activities of soil urease, sucrase, and alkaline phosphatase. Soil CO 2 emissions increased by 7.9% with PE-MPs alone, decreased by 46.3% with single Pb, and reduced by 69.4% with PE-MPs and Pb co-exposure, compared to uncontaminated soils. Specifically, the presence of PE-MPs and Pb, individually and in combination, facilitated the soil metabolic quotient, leading to reduced microbial metabolic efficiency. Moreover, the addition of Pb and PE-MPs modified the composition of the microbial community, leading to the enrichment of specific taxa. Tax4Fun analysis showed the effects of Pb, PE-MPs and their combination on the biogeochemical processes and ecological functions of microbes were mainly by altering amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport, and signal transduction. The mode of action (MOA) framework is proposed to inform a biological link between chemical exposures and adverse health effects. Despite a significant increase in knowledge and awareness, the application of MOA in human health risk assessment (RA) remains limited. This study aims to discuss the adoption of MOA for health RA within a regulatory context, taking our previously proposed but not yet validated MOA for lead neurotoxicity as an example. We first conducted a quantitative weight of evidence (qWOE) assessment, which revealed that the MOA has a moderate confidence. Then, targeted bioassays were performed within an in vitro blood-brain barrier (BBB) model to quantitatively validate the scientific validity of key events (KEs) in terms of essentiality and concordance of empirical support (dose/temporal concordance), which increases confidence in utilizing the MOA for RA. Building upon the quantitative validation data, we further conducted benchmark dose (BMD) analysis to map dose-response relationships for the critical toxicity pathways, and the lower limit of BMD at a 5% response (BMDL 5 ) was identified as the point of departure (POD) value for adverse health effects. Notably, perturbation of the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AHR) signaling pathway exhibited the lowest POD value, measured at 0.0062 μM. Considering bioavailability, we further calculated a provisional health-based guidance value (HBGV) for children's lead intake, determining it to be 2.56 μg/day. Finally, the health risk associated with the HBGV was assessed using the hazard quotient (HQ) approach, which indicated that the HBGV established in this study is a relative safe reference value for lead intake. In low-income countries, a widespread but poorly studied type of cottage industry consists of melting scrap metal for making cookware. We assessed the exposure to lead (Pb) among artisanal workers, and their families, involved in manufacturing cookware from scrap metal. In a cross-sectional survey, we compared artisanal cookware manufacturing foundries with carpentry workshops (negative controls) and car battery repair workshops (positive controls), all located in residential areas, in Lubumbashi (DR Congo). We collected surface dust in the workspaces, and blood and urine samples among workers, as well as residents living in the cookware workshops. Trace elements were quantified in the samples by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). In surface dust, median Pb concentrations were higher in cookware foundries (347 mg/kg) than in carpentries (234 mg/kg) but lower than in battery repair workshops (22,000 mg/kg). In workers making the cookware (n = 24), geometric mean (GM) Pb blood cencentration was 118 μg/L [interquartile range (IQR) 78.4-204], i.e. nearly twice as high as among carpenters [60.2 μg/L (44.4-84.7), n = 33], and half the concentration of battery repair workers [255 μg/L (197-362), n = 23]. Resident children from the cookware foundries, had higher urinary Pb [6.2 μg/g creatinine (2.3-19.3), n = 6] than adults [2.3 (2.2-2.5), n = 3]. Soil heavy metal pollution is an important issue that affects human health and ecological well-being. In-situ thermal treatment techniques, such as self-sustaining smoldering combustion (SSS), have been widely studied for the treatment of organic pollutants. However, the lack of fuel in heavy metal-contaminated soil has hindered its application. In this study, we used corn straw as fuel to investigate the feasibility of SSS remediation for copper and lead in heavy metal-contaminated soil, as well as to explore the remediation mechanism. The results of the study showed that SSS increased soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), rapidly available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK), while decreasing total nitrogen (TN), alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN), and cation exchange capacity (CEC). The oxidation state of copper (Cu) increased from 10% to 21%-40%, and the residual state of lead (Pb) increased from 18% to 51%-73%. The Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) of Cu decreased by a maximum of 81.08%, and the extracted state of Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) decreased by 67.63%; the TCLP of Pb decreased by a maximum of 81.87%, and DTPA decreased by a maximum of 85.68%. The study indicates that SSS using corn straw as fuel successfully achieved remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil. However, SSS does not reduce the content of copper and lead; it only changes their forms in the soil. The main reasons for the fixation of copper and lead during the SSS process are the adsorption of biochar, complexation with -OH functional groups, binding with π electrons, and the formation of crystalline compounds. The practical, sensitive, and real-time detection of heavy metal ions is an essential and difficult problem. This study presents the design of a unique magnetic electrochemical detection system that can achieve real-time field detection. To enhance the electrochemical performance of the sensor, Fe 2 O 3 @C-800, Co/CoO@/C-600, and CoFe 2 O 4 @C-600 magnetic composites were synthesized using three MOFs precursors by the solvothermal method. And the morphology structure and electrochemical properties of as-prepared magnetic composites were researched by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), specific surface area and porosity analyzer (BET) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The results shown that these composites improve conductivity and stability while preserving the MOFs basic frame structure. Compared with the monometallic MOFs-derived composites, the synergistic effect of the bimetallic composite CoFe 2 O 4 @C-600 can significantly enhance the electrochemical performance of the sensor. The linear range for the detection of lead ions was 0.001-60 μM, and the detection limit was 0.0043 μM with a sensitivity of 22.22 μA μM·cm -2 by differential pulse voltammetry. Spice adulteration using yellow lead chromate-based pigments has been documented as a growing global health concern. Spices from the Republic of Georgia with extremely high levels of lead, up to an order of magnitude higher than any other spices worldwide, have been implicated as sources of child lead poisoning. The objectives of this study were to 1) evaluate lead concentrations in spices sampled across the country of Georgia between 2020 and 2022, and 2) assess factors associated with spice adulteration, specifically the role of spice quality and regulatory enforcement. Spice samples were collected from 29 cities nationwide. The most populous cities were selected in each administrative region as well as those of importance to the spice supply chain. Sampling was carried out at the largest spice bazaars in each city. The regions of Adjara and Imereti were the focus of qualitative interviews conducted in 2021 with key businesspeople selling spices with very high and low levels of lead. The same cities and bazaars were visited at each of three sampling periods between 2020 and 2022. In total, 765 spice samples were collected. Lead concentrations in spices decreased over time, with a maximum of 14,233 μg/g in 2020 down to 36 μg/g in the final sampling round of 2022. A logistic regression determined that sampling round, region and spice type were associated with elevated lead in samples. Samples from Adjara and those containing marigold had the highest lead levels. Interviews with eighteen prominent spice vendors revealed difficulties sourcing sufficient quantities of high quality, brightly colored marigold, and concerns about adulteration. Interviews with two authorities from the National Food Authority highlighted the increased attention on regulating lead in spices since 2018. A novel multimode colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor was developed using an 8-hydroxy quinoline carbaldehyde Schiff base with a quinoline hydrazide probe (E)-2-((2-(quinolin-2-yl)hydrazineylidene)methyl)quinolin-8-ol (L). NMR ( 1 H & 13 C), FTIR, and HR-mass spectral characterization techniques confirmed the probe L structural conformation. As Probe L contacts Pb 2+ ions, a color change and turn-off emission can be visually detected in EtOH:H 2 O (1:1, v/v, pH = 7.21) medium. The probe displays a good emission at 440 nm due to the combined ESIPT and ICT process. The Pb 2+ ion interacts with the probe and selectively quenches fluorescence by inhibiting ESIPT and >CN- isomerization. As per Job's plot, L-Pb 2+ complex formation occurred in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio, with association constant (K a ) and quenching constant (K sv ) estimated at 1.52 × 10 5  M -1 and 4.12 × 10 5  M, respectively. The detection limits of Pb 2+ by spectrophotometric and spectrofluorometric were 1.99 μM (41 ppb) and 23.4 nM (485 ppt), respectively. Additionally, the test paper kit and RGB tool were used to monitor the color changes of L with Pb 2+ and the LOD was found to be 5.99 μM (125 ppb). For human health and environment safety, it is of great significance to develop novel materials with high effectiveness for removal of lead from not only aqueous solutions but also human body and traditional Chinese medicines. Here, functional kiwi peel composite, manganese dioxide decorated kiwi peel powder (MKPP), is proposed for the removal of Pb 2+ effectively. The adsorption of Pb 2+ in aqueous solution is a highly selective and endothermic process and kinetically follows a pseudo-second-order model, which can reach equilibrium with the capacity of 192.7 mg/g within 10 min. Comprehensive factors of hydration energy, charge-to-radius ratio and softness of Pb 2+ make a stronger affinity between MKPP and Pb 2+ . The possible adsorption mechanism involves covalent bond, electrostatic force and chelation, etc. MKPP can be efficiently regenerated and reused with high adsorption efficiency after five cycles. Besides, MKPP can remove over 97% of Pb 2+ from real water samples. MKPP can also alleviate lead poisoning to a certain extent and make the Pb level of TCM extract meet the safety standard. Background: Relatively little is known about the immediate and prospective neurodevelopmental impacts of joint exposure to multiple metals (i.e., metal mixtures) in early childhood., Objectives: To estimate associations of early childhood (∼3 years of age) blood metal concentrations with cognitive test scores at early and mid-childhood (∼8 years of age)., Methods: We studied children from the Project Viva cohort. We measured erythrocyte concentrations of seven essential (Co, Cu, Mg, Mn, Mo, Se, and Zn) and eight non-essential metals (As, Ba, Cd, Cs, Hg, Pb, Sn, and Sr) in early childhood blood samples. Trained research assistants administered cognitive tests assessing vocabulary, visual-motor ability, memory, and general intelligence (standard deviations: ∼10 points), in early and mid-childhood. We employed multivariable linear regression to examine associations of individual metals with test scores adjusting for confounders, other concurrently measured metals, and first-trimester maternal blood metals. We also estimated joint associations and explored interaction between metals in mixture analyses., Results: We analyzed 349 children (median whole blood Pb ∼1 μg/dL). In cross-sectional analyses, each doubling of Pb was associated with lower visual-motor function (mean difference: -2.43 points, 95% confidence interval (CI): -4.01, -0.86) and receptive vocabulary, i.e., words understood (-1.45 points, 95% CI: -3.26, 0.36). Associations of Pb with mid-childhood cognition were weaker and less precise by comparison. Mg was positively associated with cognition in cross-sectional but not prospective analyses, and cross-sectional associations were attenuated in a sensitivity analysis removing adjustment for concurrent metals. We did not observe joint associations nor interactions., Discussion: In this cohort with low blood Pb levels, increased blood Pb was robustly associated with lower cognitive ability in cross-sectional analyses, even after adjustment for prenatal Pb exposure, and regardless of adjustment for metal co-exposures. However, associations with mid-childhood cognition were attenuated and imprecise, suggesting some buffering of Pb neurotoxicity in early life., What This Study Adds: Relatively few studies have comprehensively separated the effects of neurotoxic metals such as lead (Pb) from pre- and postnatal co-occurring metals, nor examined persistence of associations across childhood. Lead is a well-known neurotoxicant that continues to affect children's cognition and behavior. With the aim to examine the associations of lead exposure with math performance in children at the beginning of formal schooling, we conducted a cross-sectional study of first-grade students from 11 schools in Montevideo, Uruguay. Math abilities were assessed with tests from the Batería III Woodcock-Muñoz (Calculation, Math Facts Fluency, Applied Problems, Math Calculation Skills and Broad Maths). Separate generalized linear models (GLM) tested the association of blood lead level (BLL) and each math ability, adjusting for key covariates including age and sex, maternal education, household assets and Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment Inventory score. In a complete-case of 252 first-grade students (age 67-105 months, 45% girls), mean ± SD blood lead level was 4.0 ± 2.2 μg/dL. Covariate-adjusted logistic models were used to examine the association between childhood BLLs and the odds of low math performance. BLL was negatively associated with scores on the Calculation test (β (95% CI): -0.18 (-0.33, -0.03)), Math Calculation Skills (-1.26 (-2.26, -0.25)), and Broad Maths cluster scores (-0.88 (-1.55, -0.21)). Similarly, performance on the Calculation test, as well as cluster scores for Broad Maths and Math Calculation Skills differed between children with BLLs <5 and ≥ 5 μg/dL (p < 0.01), being lower in children with higher BLLs. Finally, considering the likelihood of low test performance, each 1 μg/dL higher B-Pb was related to 27% higher likelihood for Maths Facts Fluency, 30% for Broad Math and Math Calculation Skills, and 31% for Calculation (p < 0.05). These results suggest that lead exposure is negatively associated with several basic skills that are key to math learning. Lead (Pb) accumulation can lead to serious threats to surrounding environments and damage to the liver and kidneys. In the past few years, microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology has been widely applied to achieve Pb immobilization due to its environmentally friendly nature. However, harsh pH conditions can cause the instability of the carbonate precipitation to degrade or dissolve, increasing the potential of Pb 2+ migration into nearby environments. In this study, microcapsule-based self-healing microbial-induced calcium carbonate (MICC) materials were applied to prevent Pb migration. The highest sporulation rate of 95.8% was attained at 7 g/L yeast extract, 10 g/L NH4Cl, and 3.6 g/L Mn 2+ . In the germination phase, the microcapsule not only prevented the bacterial spores from being threatened by the acid treatment but secured their growth and reproduction. Micro analysis also revealed that cerussite, calcite, and aragonite minerals were present, while extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) were identified via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These results confirm their involvement in combining Pb 2+ and Ca 2+ . The immobilization efficiency of above 90% applied to MICC materials was attained, while it of below 5% applied to no MICC use was attained. Biochar derived from soybean straw with AAEMs (alkali and alkaline earth metals) enrichment could efficiently remove heavy metals from contaminated water. In this study, the influences of pyrolysis temperature on the physicochemical property and adsorption performance of soybean straw biochar were investigated. The contributions of different adsorption mechanisms were analyzed quantitatively. The results show that the soybean straw biochar exhibits excellent Pb 2+ adsorption performance (157.2-227.2 mg g -1 ), with an order of BC800 > BC400 > BC600 > BC700 > BC500. The mechanisms of metal ion exchange (37.49%-72.58%) and precipitation with minerals (22.38%-58.03%) mainly control the Pb 2+ adsorption, whereas complexation with organic functional groups (OFGs) and cation-Cπ interaction make the less contribution. The order of cation exchange capacity (CEC) is BC400 > BC800 > BC700 > BC600 > BC500, showing a high correlation (0.965) with the contribution of metal ion exchange with AAEMs. Moreover, Ca exhibits the strongest exchange capacity. The contribution of precipitation is consistent with the variation of soluble CO 3 2- content in biochar. The biological pathways which link lead (Pb) and long-term outcomes are unclear, though rodent models and a few human studies suggest Pb may alter the body's stress response systems, which over time, can elicit dysregulated stress responses with cumulative impacts. This study examined associations between prenatal and early childhood Pb exposure and adolescent allostatic load, an index of an individual's body burden of stress in multiple biological systems, and further examined sex-based associations. Among 391 (51% male) participants in the ELEMENT birth cohort, we related trimester-specific maternal blood Pb, 1-month postpartum maternal tibia and patella Pb, and child blood Pb at 12-24 months to an allostatic load index in adolescence comprised of biomarkers of cardiovascular, metabolic, neuroendocrine, and immune function. The results were overall mixed, with prenatal exposure, particularly maternal bone Pb, being positively associated with allostatic load, and early childhood Pb showing mixed results for males and females. In adjusted Poisson regression models, 1 mcg/g increase in tibia Pb was associated with a 1% change in expected allostatic load (IRR = 1.01; 95%CI 0.99, 1.02). We found a significant Pb × sex interaction (IRR = 1.05; 95%CI 1.01, 1.10); where males saw an increasing percent change in allostatic load as 12 month Pb levels increased compared to females who saw a decreasing allostatic load. Turmeric adulterated with lead chromate pigment has been previously identified as a primary source of lead exposure in Bangladesh. This study assesses the impact of a multi-faceted intervention between 2017 and 2021 to reduce lead-tainted turmeric in Bangladesh. The intervention involved: i) disseminating findings from scientific studies via news media that identified turmeric as a source of lead poisoning, ii) educating consumers and businesspeople about the risks of lead chromate in turmeric via public notices and face-to-face meetings, and iii) collaborating with the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority to utilize a rapid lead detection technology to enforce policy disallowing turmeric adulteration. Before and after the intervention, evidence of lead chromate turmeric adulteration was assessed at the nation's largest turmeric wholesale market and at turmeric polishing mills across the country. Blood lead levels of workers at two mills were also assessed. Forty-seven interviews were conducted with consumers, businesspeople, and government officials to assess changes in supply, demand, and regulatory capacity. The proportion of market turmeric samples containing detectable lead decreased from 47% pre-intervention in 2019 to 0% in 2021 (n = 631, p < 0.0001). The proportion of mills with direct evidence of lead chromate adulteration (pigment on-site) decreased from 30% pre-intervention in 2017 to 0% in 2021 (n = 33, p < 0.0001). Blood lead levels dropped a median of 30% (IQR: 21-43%), while the 90th percentile dropped 49% from 18.2 μg/dL to 9.2 μg/dL 16 months after the intervention (n = 15, p = 0.033). Media attention, credible information, rapid lead detection tools and swift government action to enforce penalties all contributed to the intervention's success. Introduction: Pb in bone may serve as a biomarker for cumulative Pb dose over decades. We hypothesized that adult female bone Pb concentrations (BoPb) would be significantly associated with average childhood blood Pb levels (BlPb) in a birth cohort exposed to relatively high levels of Pb from Pb paint residues., Methods: 94 African American women with a mean age of 32.7 years were recruited from the Cincinnati Lead Study (CLS) cohort. Subjects were born to women residing where there had been a high incidence of childhood Pb poisoning. Biomarkers of Pb exposure were serial BlPb concentrations spanning the prenatal period to approximately 6.5 years of age. BoPb was assessed in the tibia using the McMaster 109 Cd K-XRF fourth generation system. Covariates included nutritional variables related to bone health., Results: BlPb concentrations began to rise around 6 months of age and declined at later ages. Study participants were obese with a mean Body Mass Index of 34.4 and suboptimal vitamin D status as indicated by a mean 25-OH-D of 18.5 ng/ml. Average tibia Pb was -2.0 ± 8.6 μgPb/g bone mineral. In multiple linear regression, there was no significant association between BoPb at approximately age 30 and childhood cumulative BlPb(CumBlPb)., Discussion: Collectively, BoPb of this group of subjects was not detectable. We suggest that the reason these subjects' BoPb did not reflect their early exposure was that a significantly smaller proportion of Pb body burden resides in bone in young children. As the child grows what Pb there was in bone is diluted and any remaining signal is weak. The US has more firearms than any other country in the world and uses lead ammunition almost exclusively. Lead exposure is a significant public health concern and children are at the greatest risk given their exposure to take-home lead. Firearm-related take-home lead exposure may be one of the greatest influences on elevated pediatric blood lead levels. For this ecological and spatial investigation of the relationship between firearm licensure rates as a proxy for firearm-related lead exposure and prevalence of children with blood lead levels ≥5 μg/dL in 351 cities/towns in Massachusetts, we used 10 years of data (2010-2019). We examined this relationship against other known contributors to pediatric lead exposure including old housing stock (lead paint/dust), occupations, and lead in water. Pediatric blood lead levels were positively correlated with licensure, poverty, and certain occupations and negatively correlated with lead in water and police or firefighter employment. Firearm licensure was a major significant predictor of pediatric blood lead alone (β = 0.13; 95% CI, 0.10, 0.17) and across all regression models. The final model predicted over half the variation in pediatric blood lead (Adjusted R 2  = 0.51). Negative binomial analysis found cities/towns with more firearms had higher pediatric blood lead levels (highest quartile fully adjusted prevalence ratio ((aPR) = 1.18; 95% CI, 1.09, 1.30) with a significant increase in pediatric blood lead per increase in firearms (p < 0.001). There were no significant spatial effects, suggesting that although there could be other factors impacting elevated pediatric blood lead, they are unlikely to influence spatial associations. Our paper provides compelling evidence of a potential and dangerous link between lead ammunition and child blood lead levels and is the first to do so using multiple years' worth of data. Housing-based lead paint dust is the most common source of lead exposure for US-born children. Although year of housing construction is a critical indicator of the lead hazard to US children, not all housing of the same age poses the same risk to children. Additional information about housing condition is required to differentiate the housing-based lead risk at the parcel level. This study aimed to identify and assess a method for gathering and using observations of exterior housing conditions to identify active housing-based lead hazards at the parcel level. We used a dataset of pediatric blood lead observations (sample years 2000-2013, ages 6-72 months, n = 6,589) to assess associations between observations of exterior housing conditions and housing-based lead risk. We used graphical and Lasso regression methods to estimate the likelihood of an elevated blood lead observation (≥3.5 μg/dL). Our methods estimate a monotonic increase in the likelihood of an elevated blood lead observation as housing conditions deteriorate with the largest changes associated with homes in the greatest disrepair. Additionally we estimate that age of home construction works in consort with housing conditions to amplify risks among those houses built before 1952. However, comparative human studies on the body burden of metals associated with organic food consumption are currently lacking., Objectives: The objectives were to i) determine the effectiveness of an organic food intervention in reducing the body burden of urinary concentration of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) and ii) evaluate the association between metal exposures and biomarkers of oxidative damage in primary school children in Cyprus., Methods: This study was part of the ORGANIKO cluster-randomized crossover trial, a 40-day organic food treatment to 149 healthy children (10-12 years) in Cyprus. Urinary biomarkers of Pb and Cd were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Linear mixed-effect regression models were used to account for the effect and duration of the organic food treatment. Multiple comparisons were handled using Benjamini-Hochberg correction., Results: A time-dependent reduction for creatinine-adjusted Pb during the intervention period was observed (β = -0.021; 95% CI: -0.034, -0.008; p-adjusted = 0.01). A similar trend was observed for creatinine-adjusted Cd, but it was not significant (β = -0.013; 95% CI: -0.026, 0.000; p-adjusted = 0.15). Heavy metals represent a considerable threat, and the current study deals with synthesizing a novel MOF nanocomposite by intercalating graphene oxide (GO) and linker UiO-66-NDC. It was shown that UiO-66-NDC/GO had enhanced the removal efficiency of Pb (II) ions at pH 6. The adsorption kinetics data followed the PSO (Type 2) representing chemisorption. Adsorption data were also fitted with three different isotherms, namely Temkin, Freundlich, & Langmuir, and the Temkin model exhibited the best correlation (R 2 0.99), representing the chemisorption nature of the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of Pb (II) ions using Langmuir was found to be 254.45 mg/g (298 K). The Pb (II) adsorption process was confirmed to be exothermic and spontaneous as the thermodynamic parameters H° and G° were determined to have negative values. MOF nanocomposite also represents significant reusability for up to four regeneration cycles using 0.01 M HCl; for the next four, it works quite efficiently after regeneration. Meanwhile, the simulation findings confirm the superior dynamic stability (∼08 times) of the MOF nanocomposite as compared to the GO system. There has been little research on childhood lead exposure pathways since the 1990s. New data from Michigan in 2017-2021 for 429 children in 345 homes included lead in blood, paint, dust, soil, water, and other housing, demographic, and behavioral metrics. Fifty-three percent of these children had blood lead (BPb) ≥5 μg/dL. A repeated measures pathway model that accounted for multiple children in the same home was constructed using weighted least squares mean estimation and included variance-covariance model multiple imputation. Results showed that children's BPb was directly predicted by lead in settled floor house dust, child's age, season, and mouthing behavior and indirectly predicted by window sill and trough dust lead (DPb), bare soil lead (SPb), proportion of floors with carpets, and exterior building deteriorations. Paint lead (PPb) was also an indirect predictor of BPb through the soil and settled dust pathways. Water lead (WPb), water consumption and other lead sources/pathways were not significant predictors of BPb in this cohort. Although risk factors for individual children are highly variable and worthy of investigation to pinpoint their exposures, this study shows that the main direct and indirect pathways of lead exposure for most children in older housing remain paint and the contaminated dust and soil it generates. Pathway analyses in other jurisdictions using current data should be performed to confirm these results. This study suggests both DPb and BPb in high-risk homes may have declined since the 1990s and that lead in dust, soil, and paint all should be measured to predict risk and target remediation. Background: Many American Indian (AI) communities are in areas affected by environmental contamination, such as toxic metals. However, studies assessing exposures in AI communities are limited. We measured blood metals in AI communities to assess historical exposure and identify participant characteristics associated with these levels in the Strong Heart Study (SHS) cohort., Method: Archived blood specimens collected from participants (n = 2014, all participants were 50 years of age and older) in Arizona, Oklahoma, and North and South Dakota during SHS Phase-III (1998-1999) were analyzed for cadmium, lead, manganese, mercury, and selenium using inductively coupled plasma triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. We conducted descriptive analyses for the entire cohort and stratified by selected subgroups, including selected demographics, health behaviors, income, waist circumference, and body mass index. Bivariate associations were conducted to examine associations between blood metal levels and selected socio-demographic and behavioral covariates. Finally, multivariate regression models were used to assess the best model fit that predicted blood metal levels., Findings: All elements were detected in 100% of study participants, with the exception of mercury (detected in 73% of participants). The SHS population had higher levels of blood cadmium and manganese than the general U.S. population 50 years and older. The median blood mercury in the SHS cohort was at about 30% of the U.S. reference population, potentially due to low fish consumption. Participants in North Dakota and South Dakota had the highest blood cadmium, lead, manganese, and selenium, and the lowest total mercury levels, even after adjusting for covariates. In addition, each of the blood metals was associated with selected demographic, behavioral, income, and/or weight-related factors in multivariate models. The aim of this study was to examine the qualitative and quantitative analysis of Pb 2+ adsorption mechanisms performed with biochars derived from rice straw (RSBs), rice husk (RHBs) and saw dust (SDBs) at several pyrolysis temperatures (400-600 °C) in a fluidized bed system. Adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and desorption analysis were determined, and biochars were analyzed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope with Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS) and Boehm titration method. The effect of minerals on Pb 2+ adsorption, including precipitation and cation exchange, revealed increasing contribution of precipitation from a range of 4.13%-38.83% to a range of 34.08%-79.94% and decreasing effect of cation exchange from a range of 50.17%-69.75% to a range of 9.57%-43.47% with increasing pyrolysis temperature. However, it remained the dominant adsorption mechanism of all biochars (accounted for 69.49-89.52%). Especially, RSBs with quite high maximum adsorption capacity (qm) values (116-127.57 mgg -1 ) were mainly due to precipitation mechanism of Pb 2+ adsorption, which exhibited better adsorption capacities than RHBs (25.15-30.40 mgg -1 ) and SDBs (21.81-24.05 mgg -1 ). Only with the fluidized bed shown in this study, 2.00t RSBs could be produced and the corresponding Pb 2+ adsorption may reach 255.50kg per year depending on its maximum adsorption capacity under 500 °C pyrolysis temperature. Kohl is an eye cosmetic that was traditionally used in many Asian and African countries but that is now more widely available. Ingredients of kohl reported in previous studies seem to be rather variable but mention is frequently made of minerals based on Pb whose use in cosmetic products is prohibited in Europe. We purchased 23 products of kohl from retail outlets in five different European countries and over the internet and analysed their chemical composition by XRF and SEM-EDXS. The majority of the products (n = 17) did not conform with European legislation based on the presence of Pb (often as galena), whose concentrations ranged from a few mg kg -1 to over 400000 mg kg -1 . Cadmium, another element prohibited in cosmetic products in Europe, was also present as a contaminant in 13 products at concentrations up to a few hundred mg kg -1 . In addition to heavy metals, minerals of other metals (e.g. Fe and Zn) appeared to be present in the nano-size range and might represent an additional health hazard. Clearly, the lack of quality control in the manufacture of kohl results in the widespread occurrence of toxic and unwanted elements and the trade of illegal products in Europe. To assess human health risks related to the environment, it is necessary to aggregate exposure from multiple sources. The objective of this paper was to propose a relevant approach to combine data from heterogeneous populations and methodologies. Five different methods based on Monte-Carlo simulations were tested and compared. Differences were: taking into account or not stratification variable, timeline to assign exposure factors and concentration and way to account for concentration correlations. The methods were applied to estimate lead exposure from food, dust, soil, air, and tap water or French children aged between six months and three years old. Comparing results' uncertainty, it is recommended to 1) select a reference population representative of the target population, 2) select stratification variables to combine surveys, and 3) simulate a new population by randomly sampling individuals in the reference population and simultaneously assigning human exposure factors and environmental concentrations from other surveys in integrating correlations (MC1S). No difference was observed when taking into account correlations using vectors of determinist data from one survey or rank of correlations with the Iman-Conover method. Regardless the methods used to combine data, dust was the main exposure source, followed by soil and in a less extent by food. Kabwe is a lead contaminated mining town in Zambia. Kabwe has extensive lead contaminated soil and children in Kabwe ingest and inhale high quantities of this toxic dust. The aim of this paper is to analyze the health impact of this exposure for children. Health data from three existing studies were re-analyzed. Over 95% of children living in the most affected townships had high blood lead levels (BLLs) > 10µg/dL. Approximately 50% of those children had BLLs ≥ 45µg/dL. Abstract Chemical and natural factors have been demonstrated to interact and potentially change the toxicity of the individual stressors. Yet, while there exists a multitude of papers studying the temperature-dependent toxicity of single chemicals, little research exists on the impact of temperature on chemical mixtures. This paper investigates the effect of temperature on environmentally-relevant mixtures of Cd, Cu and Pb. We linked the effects on respiration, growth, feeding rate and activity of Asellus aquaticus to the free ion activities, as a measure for the bioavailability of the metals, and the body concentrations. We observed interactions of temperature and metal body concentrations on all sublethal endpoints, except activity. Mixture effects on accumulation and feeding rate were observed as well and even an interaction between metal body burden, mixture and temperature treatment was revealed for the feeding rate of Pb exposed isopods. This research adds to a growing body of evidence that the current chemical-based monitoring is insufficient to estimate chemical toxicity in aquatic ecosystems and must, therefore, be complemented with effect-based tools. Heavy metal exposures are ubiquitous in the environment and their relation to sex hormones is not well understood. This paper investigates the associations between selected heavy metals (lead and cadmium) and sex hormones (testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol, free estradiol) as well as other major molecules in the steroid biosynthesis pathway (androstanedione glucuronide and sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG)). Blood lead and cadmium were selected as biomarkers of exposure, and tested for associations in males using National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 1999-2004. After adjustment for age, race, body mass index, smoking status, diabetes and alcohol intake, blood lead was positively associated with testosterone and SHBG while blood cadmium was positively associated with SHBG. After controlling for additional heavy metal exposure, the associations between lead and testosterone as well as cadmium and SHBG remained significant. Furthermore, the association between blood lead and testosterone was modified by smoking status (P for interaction=0.011), diabetes (P for interaction=0.021) and blood cadmium (P for interaction=0.029). The association between blood cadmium and SHBG levels was modified by blood lead (P for interaction=0.004). This paper investigates the historical sources of soil-lead contamination in Santa Ana, California. Even though dangerous levels of soil-lead have been found in a wide variety of communities across the United States, public health institutions lack clarity on the historical origins of these crises. This study uses geo-spatial data collected through archival research to estimate the impact of two potential sources of lead contamination in the past -- lead-paint and leaded gasoline. It examines, through a combination of statistical and historical methods, the association between lead concentrations in contemporary soil samples and patterns in the evolution of the city's physical features, such as the growth of urbanized areas and the historical flow of traffic. We emphasize the value of historical data collected through archival research for understanding the sources of environmental lead, particularly leaded gasoline, which our study found to be the most likely and most prominent contributor to soil-lead in Santa Ana's environment. This research contributes to environmental-justice advocacy efforts to reframe lead poisoning as a systemic environmental issue and outlines the path forward to community-level remediation strategies.

Metals are ubiquitous in nature, being found in all environmental compartments, and have a variety of applications in human activities. Metals are transferred by maternal blood to the fetus via the placenta, and exposure continues throughout life. For the general population, exposure comes mainly from water and food consumption, including breast milk. In this paper, we reviewed studies on the toxicity of arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium, the toxic metals of most concern to human health, focusing on the potential risks to newborns and infants. A total of 75 studies published since 2000 reporting the levels of these metals in breast milk were reviewed. Lead was the metal most investigated in breast milk (43 studies), and for which the highest levels were reported (up to 1515 µg/L). Arsenic was the least investigated (18 studies), with higher levels reported for breast milk (up to 149 µg/L) collected in regions with high arsenic concentrations in water (>10 µg/L). Data from 34 studies on mercury showed that levels in breast milk were generally higher in populations with high fish consumption, where it may be present mainly as MeHg. Cadmium levels in breast milk were the lowest, with means <2 µg/L in most of the 29 studies reviewed. Results of risk assessments indicated that the intake of arsenic, lead and mercury by infants through breastfeeding can be considered a health concern in most regions of the world. Although the potential risks to infants are mostly outweighed by the benefits of breast milk consumption, it is essential that contaminants be continuously monitored, especially in the most critical regions, and that measures be implemented by health authorities to reduce exposure of newborns and infants to these metals, and thus avoid unnecessary health risks. Adverse health effects from extreme heat remain a major risk, especially in a changing climate. Several European countries have implemented heat health action plans (HHAPs) to prevent ill health and excess mortality from heat. This paper assesses the state of implementation of HHAPs in the WHO European Region and discusses barriers and successes since the early 2000s. The results are based on a web-based survey among 53 member states on the current national and federal HHAPs in place. Guided by the eight core elements of HHAPs as outlined by the WHO Regional Office for Europe guidance from 2008, we analyzed which elements were fully or partially implemented and which areas of improvement countries identified. HHAP adaptations to account for COVID-19 were sought via literature search and expert consultations. 27 member states provided information, of which 17 countries reported having a HHAP. Five out of eight core elements, namely agreement on a lead body, accurate and timely alert systems, heat-related health information plans, strategies to reduce health exposure, and care for vulnerable groups, were at least partially implemented in all 17 plans. Alert systems were implemented most often at 94%. The least often implemented items were real-time surveillance, long-term urban planning, and preparedness of health and social systems. Five countries had published COVID-19 guidance online. Our findings suggest a progressive improvement in the development and rollout of HHAPs overall and awareness of vulnerable population groups in WHO/Europe, while integration of HHAPs into long-term climate change and health planning remains a challenge. An increasing body of literature has demonstrated that armed conflicts and military activity may contribute to environmental pollution with metals, although the existing data are inconsistent. Therefore, in this paper, we discuss potential sources of military-related metal emissions, environmental metal contamination, as well as routes of metal exposure and their health hazards in relation to military activities. Emission of metals into the environment upon military activity occurs from weapon residues containing high levels of particles containing lead (Pb; leaded ammunition), copper (Cu; unleaded), and depleted uranium (DU). As a consequence, military activity results in soil contamination with Pb and Cu, as well as other metals including Cd, Sb, Cr, Ni, Zn, with subsequent metal translocation to water, thus increasing the risk of human exposure. Biomonitoring studies have demonstrated increased accumulation of metals in plants, invertebrates, and vertebrate species (fish, birds, mammals). Correspondingly, military activity is associated with human metal exposure that results from inhalation or ingestion of released particles, as well as injuries with subsequent metal release from embedded fragments. It is also notable that local metal accumulation following military injury may occur even without detectable fragments. Nonetheless, data on health effects of military-related metal exposures have yet to be systematized. The existing data demonstrate adverse neurological, cardiovascular, and reproductive outcomes in exposed military personnel. Moreover, military-related metal exposures also result in adverse neurodevelopmental outcome in children living within adulterated territories. Experimental in vivo and in vitro studies also demonstrated toxic effects of specific metals as well as widely used metal alloys, although laboratory data report much wider spectrum of adverse effects as compared to epidemiological studies. Recent advances in understanding of biological mechanisms and adverse outcome pathways for many exposure-related diseases show that certain common mechanisms involve thresholds and nonlinearities in biological exposure concentration-response (C-R) functions. These range from ultrasensitive molecular switches in signaling pathways, to assembly and activation of inflammasomes, to rupture of lysosomes and pyroptosis of cells. Realistic dose-response modeling and risk analysis must confront the reality of nonlinear C-R functions. This paper reviews several challenges for traditional statistical regression modeling of C-R functions with thresholds and nonlinearities, together with methods for overcoming them. Statistically significantly positive exposure-response regression coefficients can arise from many non-causal sources such as model specification errors, incompletely controlled confounding, exposure estimation errors, attribution of interactions to factors, associations among explanatory variables, or coincident historical trends. If so, the unadjusted regression coefficients do not necessarily predict how or whether reducing exposure would reduce risk. We discuss statistical options for controlling for such threats, and advocate causal Bayesian networks and dynamic simulation models as potentially valuable complements to nonparametric regression modeling for assessing causally interpretable nonlinear C-R functions and understanding how time patterns of exposures affect risk.
