The Ulva prolifera bloom is considered one of the most serious ecological disasters in the Yellow Sea in the past decade, forming a carbon sink in its source area within a short period but becoming a carbon source at its destination. To explore the effects of different environmental changes on seawater dissolved carbon pools faced by living U. prolifera in its originating area, U. prolifera were cultured in three sets with different light intensity (54, 108, and 162 μmol m -2  s -1 ), temperature (12, 20, and 28 °C) and nitrate concentration gradients (25, 50, and 100 μmol L -1 ). The results showed that moderate light (108 μmol m -2  s -1 ), temperature (20 °C), and continuous addition of exogenous nitrate significantly enhanced the absorption of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in seawater by U. prolifera and most promoted its growth. Under the most suitable environment, the changes in the seawater carbonate system were mainly dominated by biological production and denitrification, with less influence from aerobic respiration. Facing different environmental changes, U. prolifera continuously changed its carbon fixation mode according to tissue δ 13 C results, with the changes in the concentrations of various components of DIC in seawater, especially the fluctuation of HCO 3 - and CO 2 concentrations. Enhanced light intensity of 108 μmol m -2  s -1 could shift the carbon fixation pathway of U. prolifera towards the C 4 pathway compared to temperature and nitrate stimulation. Environmental conditions at the origin determined the amount of dissolved carbon fixed by U. prolifera. Protozoa play a pivotal role in the microbial cycle, and ciliated protozoan grazing habits are associated with dimethyl sulfide (DMS) cycle. Many studies have explored the impacts of nanoplastics (NPs) and microplastics (MPs) on ecotoxicological effects of ciliates. However, limited research exists on NPs and MPs influences on the production of organic sulfur compounds. The impact of NPs and MPs on the production of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and carbonyl sulfide (COS) remains unclear. Therefore, we examined the impacts of three concentrations (1 × 10 5 , 5 × 10 5 , and 1 × 10 6 items/mL) of polystyrene (PS) NPs (50 nm) and MPs (1 and 5 μm) on the ecotoxicology and DMS/dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP)/DMSO/COS production in the ciliate Uronema marinum. NPs and MPs exposure were found to reduce the abundance, growth rate, volume, and biomass of U. marinum. Additionally, NPs and MPs increased the superoxide anion radical (O 2 ˙ ─ ) production rates and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents (24 h), leading to a decline in glutathione (GSH) content and an ascend in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity to mitigate the effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Exposure to PS NPs and MPs decreased the ingestion rates of algae by 7.5-14.4%, resulting in decreases in DMS production by 56.8-85.4%, with no significant impact on DMSO production. The results suggest a distinct pathway for the production of DMSO or COS compared to DMS. Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) is a prevalent volatile organic sulfur compound relevant to the global climate. Ecotoxicological effects of nano- and microplastics (NPs and MPs) on phytoplankton, zooplankton, and bacteria have been investigated by numerous studies. Yet, the influences of NPs/MPs on dimethylated sulfur compounds remains understudied. Herein, we investigated the impacts of polystyrene (PS) NPs/MPs (80 nm, 1 μm, and 10 μm) on zooplankton grazing, chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration, bacterial community, dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), and DMS production in the microcosms. Our findings revealed that rotifer grazing increased the production of DMS in the absence of NPs/MPs but did not promote DMS production when exposed to NPs/MPs. The ingestion rates of the rotifer and copepod exposed to NPs/MPs at high concentrations were significantly reduced. NPs/MPs exposure significantly decreased DMS levels in the treatments with rotifers compared to the animal controls. In the bacterial microcosms, smaller NPs/MPs sizes were more detrimental to Chl a concentrations compared to larger sizes. The study revealed a stimulatory effect on Chl a concentrations, DMSP d concentrations, and bacterial abundances when exposed to 10 μm MP with low concentrations. The effects of NPs/MPs on DMS concentrations were both dose- and size-dependent, with NPs showing greater toxicity compared to larger MPs. NPs/MPs led to changes in bacterial community compositions, dependent on both dosage and size. NPs caused a notable decrease in the alpha diversities and richness of bacteria compared to MPs. Due to the potential impacts of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) on algal growth and thereby affect the climate-relevant substances, dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS), we studied the polystyrene (PS) MPs and NPs of 1 μm and 80 nm impacts on the growth, chlorophyll content, reactive oxygen species (ROS), antioxidant enzyme activity, and DMS/DMSP production in Emiliania huxleyi. E. huxleyi is a prominent oceanic alga that plays a key role in DMS and DMSP production. The results revealed that high concentrations of MPs and NPs inhibited the growth, carotenoid (Car), and Chl a concentrations of E. huxleyi. However, short-time exposure to low concentrations of PS MPs and NPs stimulated the growth of E. huxleyi. Furthermore, high concentrations of MPs and NPs resulted in an increase in the superoxide anion radical (O 2 .- ) production rate and a decrease in the malondialdehyde (MDA) content compared with the low concentrations. Exposure to MPs and NPs at 5 mg L -1 induced superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity as a response to scavenging ROS. High concentrations of MPs and NPs significantly inhibited the production of DMSP and DMS. Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have gained global concern due to their detrimental effects on marine organisms. We investigated the effects of 80 nm polystyrene (PS) NPs on life history traits, ingestion, and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) production in the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. Fluorescently labeled 80 nm PS NPs were ingested by the rotifer B. plicatilis and accumulated in the digestive tract. The lethal rates of B. plicatilis exposed to NPs were dose-dependent. High concentrations of PS NPs exposure had negative effects on developmental duration, leading to prolonged embryonic development and pre-reproductive periods, shortened reproductive period, post-reproductive period, and lifespan in B. plicatilis. High concentrations of PS NPs exposure inhibited life table demographic parameters such as age-specific survivorship and fecundity, generation time, net reproductive rate, and life expectancy. Consequently, the population of B. plicatilis was adversely impacted. Furthermore, exposure to PS NPs resulted in a reduced ingestion rate in B. plicatilis, as well as a decreased in DMS, particulate DMSP (DMSP p ) concentration, and DMSP lyase activity (DLA), which exhibited a dose-response relationship. B. plicatilis grazing promoted DLA and therefore increased DMS production. PS NPs exposure caused a decline in the increased DMS induced by rotifer grazing. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) is a powerful greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential. While SF 6 emissions from urban areas have been extensively studied, our knowledge about SF 6 concentrations in the oceanic atmosphere and its air-sea exchange remains limited. Herein, the concentrations of SF 6 in the atmosphere and surface seawater of the WPO (Western Pacific Ocean) and EIO (Eastern Indian Ocean) were comprehensively characterized from 2019 to 2022 in the first long-term study. The mean mixing ratios of SF 6 over the WPO and EIO during 2019-2020 (2021-2022) were 10.9 (11.2) and 10.9 (11.1) ppt, respectively. The atmospheric SF 6 concentration over the WPO and EIO increased at rates of 0.40 ± 0.06 and 0.58 ± 0.28 ppt yr -1 , respectively, surpassing previously reported annual growth rates. The faster growth was primarily attributed to the influence of polluted air masses originating from eastern Asian countries, particularly Japan, Northeast China, and India. This might explain why the radiative forcing caused by SF 6 in the study region was higher than the global average. The concentrations of SF 6 in the surface seawater of the WPO and EIO ranged from 0.33 to 2.54 fmol kg -1 , and the distribution was affected by atmospheric concentrations and ocean currents. Estimated air-sea fluxes revealed that the ocean acted as a significant sink of atmospheric SF 6 , and the preliminary estimation suggested oceanic uptake accounts for about 7% of annual global SF 6 emissions. Based on these findings, we tentatively suggest that the strength of the ocean as a sink of SF 6 may warrant reassessment. In this paper, the kinetics and thermodynamics of Adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) sorption on the sediments obtained from the Yangtze River Estuary and adjacent areas were studied, in combination with the effects of the sediments' properties and media conditions. The kinetics curves could be described by a two-compartment first-order equation, and the equilibrium isotherms fitted well with the modified Langmuir and Freundlich models. The analysis of organic phosphorus (OP) fractions changes after sorption indicated that the contents of exchangeable or loosely sorbed P O increased most significantly. Higher organic matter (OM) of the sediments were favorable for the sorption ability. It was also found that the content of OP and OM in the sediments showed an obvious positive correlation, indicating that organic matter rather than Fe/Al oxides played an important role in the migration of OP in the Yangtze River estuary and its adjacent area. Temperature, salinity and pH of the media influenced the sorption of AMP significantly. Increase of temperature was of benefit to the sorption of AMP, which was a spontaneous and exothermic process according to the calculations of the thermodynamic parameters. The sorption capacity was higher at a moderate salinity in the range of our study. The oceanic production and release of volatile halocarbons (VHCs) to the atmosphere play a vital role in regulating the global climate. In this study, seasonal and spatial variations in VHCs, including trichlorofluoromethane (CFC-11), methyl iodide (CH 3 I), dibromomethane (CH 2 Br 2 ), and bromoform (CHBr 3 ), and environmental parameters affecting their concentrations were characterized in the atmosphere and seawater of the Yangtze River Estuary and its adjacent marine area during two cruises from October 17 to October 26, 2019 and from May 12 to May 25, 2020. Significant seasonal variations were observed in the atmosphere and seawater because of seasonal differences in the prevalent monsoon, water mass (Yangtze River Diluted Water), and biogenic production. VHCs concentrations were positively correlated with Chl-a concentrations in the surface water during autumn. The average sea-to-air fluxes of CH 3 I, CH 2 Br 2, and CHBr 3 in autumn were 19.7, 4.0, and 7.6 nmol m -2 d -1 , respectively, while those in spring were 6.3, 6.4, and -3.6 nmol m -2 d -1 . In the ship-based incubation experiments, ocean acidification and dust deposition had no significant effects on VHCs concentrations. The concentrations of CH 2 Br 2 and CHBr 3 were significantly positively correlated with phytoplankton biomass under lower pH condition (M3: pH 7.9). The effects of ocean acidification and solar radiation on marine organisms have received increasing attention. Coccolithophores are a major producer of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), which is a precursor of dimethylsulfide (DMS), a volatile biogenic active gas related to climate. Here, we investigated the individual and combined effects of elevated CO 2 and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on growth, DMS, and DMSP production of Emiliania huxleyi. Elevated CO 2 (1000 μatm, HC) decreased the cell concentration, DMS, and particulate DMSP (DMSP p ) concentrations by 17%, 20%, and 13%, respectively, compared with ambient CO 2 (400 μatm, LC) in the semi-continuous culture. The addition of UVA to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) increased cell concentration of E. huxleyi by 16% on day 4, which may be due to the photorepair effects induced by UVA, and the effect was time-dependent. PAR + UVA and PAR + UVA + UVB exposure decreased cellular DMS by 25%-56%, and increased cellular DMSP p by 60%-130% compared with PAR on days 3-4. Cellular DMSP p followed the order: PAR + UVA > PAR + UVA + UVB > PAR, and HC had no significant effects on cellular DMSP p compared with LC in the combined experiment. Volatile brominated compounds are important trace gases for stratospheric ozone chemistry. In this study, the spatial variations of dibromomethane (CH 2 Br 2 ), bromodichloromethane (CHBrCl 2 ), dibromochloromethane (CHBr 2 Cl) and bromoform (CHBr 3 ) in the seawater and overlying atmosphere were measured in the Yellow Sea (YS) and the East China Sea (ECS) in winter. The air-sea fluxes of CH 2 Br 2 , CHBrCl 2 , CHBr 2 Cl and CHBr 3 ranged from -11.46 to 25.33, -4.68 to 7.91, -8.60 to 4.08 and -88.57 to 8.84 nmol m -2 ·d -1 , respectively. In order to understand the mechanism of halocarbons production, we measured bromoperoxidase (BrPO) activity (39.18-186.74 μU·L -1 ) in the YS and ECS for the first time using an aminophenyl fluorescein (APF) method and performed in-situ incubation experiments in BrPO-treated seawater. The production rates of CH 2 Br 2 , CHBrCl 2 , CHBr 2 Cl and CHBr 3 ranged from 14.21 to 94.74, 0.00 to 19.74, 0.00 to 30.62 and 6.18-72.75 pmol L -1 ·h -1 , respectively, in BrPO-treated seawater. There were significantly higher production rates in coastal waters compared with the open sea (P = 0.016) because of higher DOC levels near the coast. Moreover, the production rates of halocarbons increased with BrPO activity and H 2 O 2 concentration. The results showed that enzyme-mediated reaction was an important source for the production of halocarbons in seawater. Methyl iodide (CH 3 I) released from ocean is an important carrier of iodine, which plays an important role in ozone depletion in the atmosphere. Depletion of ozone has increased the amount of ultraviolet radiation that reaches the earth's surface and recent global warming has caused oceanic acidification as well as dust events, but how these environmental changes will affect CH 3 I concentration in the ocean is unclear. In this study, the spatial distributions and sources of CH 3 I in the atmosphere, seawater, and sediment porewater were measured in the Yellow Sea (YS) and the East China Sea (ECS) between June and July 2018. Higher concentrations in the atmosphere, seawater, and sediment were found in the YS than in the ECS, and surface seawater emissions were discovered to be the major contributors of atmospheric CH 3 I concentrations. Anthropogenic pollutants could explain significant spatial variation in the distribution of CH 3 I. High concentrations of CH 3 I in sediment porewater increased diffusion into bottom waters, with diffusive fluxes of 0.2-6.5 nmol m -2 d -1 . The spatial distributions, fluxes, and environmental effects of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) were investigated in the Yellow Sea (YS) and the East China Sea (ECS) in spring. The average concentrations of ethane, propane, i-/n-butane, ethylene, propylene and isoprene in the seawater were 18.1 ± 6.4, 15.4 ± 4.7, 6.8 ± 2.9, 6.4 ± 3.2, 67.1 ± 26.7, 20.5 ± 8.7 and 17.1 ± 11.1 pmol L -1 , respectively. The alkenes in the surface seawater were more abundant than their saturated homologs and NMHCs concentrations (with the exception of isoprene) decreased with carbon number. The spatial variations of isoprene were consistent with the distributions of chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and Chaetoceros, Skeletonema, Nitzschia mainly contributed to the production of isoprene, while the others' distributions might be related to their photochemical production. Observations in atmospheric NMHCs indicated alkanes in the marine atmosphere decreased from inshore to offshore due to influence of the continental emissions, while alkenes were largely derived from the oceanic source. In addition, no apparent diurnal discrepancy of atmospheric NMHCs (except for isoprene) were found between daytime and night. As the main sink of NMHCs in seawater, the average sea-to-air fluxes of ethane, propane, i-/n-butane, ethylene and propylene were 31.70, 29.75, 18.49, 15.89, 239.6, 67.94 and 52.41 nmol m -2 d -1 , respectively. The average annual emissions of isoprene accounted for 0.1-1.3% of the global ocean emissions, which indicated that the coastal and shelf areas might be significant sources of isoprene. The effects of microplastics pollution on the marine ecosystem have aroused attention. Copepod grazing stimulates dimethylsulfide (DMS) release from dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in phytoplankton, but the effect of microplastics exposure on DMS and DMSP production during copepod feeding has not yet been revealed. Here, we investigated the effects of polyethylene (PE) and polyamide-nylon 6 (PA 6) microplastics on ecotoxicity and DMS/DMSP production in the copepod Tigriopus japonicus. The microplastics had detrimental effects on feeding, egestion, reproduction, survival, and DMS and DMSP production in T. japonicus and presented significant dose-response relationships. The 24 h-EC50 for ingestion rates (IRs) of female T. japonicus exposed to PE and PA 6 were 57.6 and 58.9 mg L -1 , respectively. In comparison, the body size of the copepods was not significantly affected by the microplastics during one generation of culture. Ingesting fluorescently labeled microplastics confirmed that microplastics were ingested by T. japonicus and adhered to the organs of the body surface. T. japonicus grazing promoted DMS release originating from degradation of DMSP in algal cells. Grazing-activated DMS production decreased because of reduced IR in the presence of microplastics. Spatiotemporal variability in seawater, spatial variation in sediment, pollution characteristics, and risks related to 16 phthalate esters (PAEs) were investigated in the Yangtze River estuary and its adjacent East China Sea. The total concentrations of ΣPAEs in surface water were 0.588-17.7 μg L -1 in summer, 2.63-22.9 μg L -1 in winter, and 1.93-20.7 μg L -1 in spring, with average values of 2.05, 10.2, and 4.89 μg L -1 , respectively. PAE concentrations exhibited notable seasonal variations with the highest value in winter and the lowest value in summer. The seasonal variation in PAE concentrations may be influenced by runoff and diluted water from the Yangtze River. The chemical composition of PAEs showed that di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) had significantly higher (p < 0.05) concentrations than the other congeners and were the most abundant PAE species in sediment and seawater in all three seasons. In addition, DnBP and DiBP were the two main congeners in seawater, and DEHP concentrations were higher in sediment than in seawater. DEHP had higher potential risks to sensitive organisms in water environment than DnBP and DiBP, and DiBP and DnBP which presented high levels of risk in sedimentary environment. The spatial and temporal distribution, congener profiles and ecological risk of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) were investigated in the seawater and sediment samples from the East China Sea in spring and autumn. The average concentrations of ΣPAEs in water samples were 3.16 ± 2.16 μg L -1 in autumn and 1.63 ± 1.20 μg L -1 in spring. The ΣPAEs in sediment was much higher than that in seawater, with an average value of 7.36 ± 6.70 mg kg -1 (dw). PAEs levels in the sea-surface microlayer (SML) in spring were 3.61 ± 3.36 μg L -1 , indicating that the PAEs were noticeably concentrated in the SML, with an average enrichment factor of 2.10. Among the 16 PAE congeners, di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the preponderant PAEs in both sediment and seawater samples. Additionally, PAE concentrations in autumn were higher than those in spring, and this difference resulted mainly from the terrigenous input and marine transportation. The horizontal distributions of PAEs showed an opposite distribution pattern to salinity and temperature, a pattern which might be influenced by the inputs of fresh water. The vertical distributions of ΣPAEs were characterized by high concentrations in the surface waters, with a slight decrease with depth, and then an increase close to the seabed. The results of ecological risk in the water-phase showed that the level of potential risk followed the order of DEHP > DiBP and DnBP > DMP and DEP, which posed a high (DEHP), medium (DiBP and DnBP) and low (DMP and DEP) risk to the sensitive organisms, respectively. The spatial distribution, chemical composition and ecological risk of 16 phthalate esters (PAEs) were investigated in the sea-surface microlayer (SML), seawater and sediment samples of the Bohai Sea (BS) and the Yellow Sea (YS). The concentration levels of the ΣPAEs spanned a range of 449-13441 ng L -1 in the SML, 453-5108 ng L -1 in seawater, and 1.24-15.8 mg kg -1 in the sediment samples, respectively, with diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and di-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) as the dominant PAEs in both the water and sediment samples. The concentrations of ΣPAEs in the BS were higher than those in the YS. The vertical distribution of ΣPAEs in the water column showed that the concentrations were higher in the surface waters, but decreased slightly with depth, and started to increase at the bottom. Additionally, PAEs were significantly enriched in the SML, with an average enrichment factor of 1.46. The ecological risk of the PAEs was evaluated by the risk quotient (RQ) method, which indicated that DEHP posed a high risk to aquatic organisms in the whole water-phase, while the RQ values of DBP and DiBP reached a high risk levels in sedimentary environment., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. The occurrence of 17 target PFAA analytes was determined in surface sediments (n = 37) of the East China Sea and potential influencing factors were examined. ΣPFAAs ranged from 0.41 ng/g dw to 3.06 ng/g dw, with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) as the most abundant perfluorocarboxylic acid and perfluoroalkyl sulfonate, respectively. PFAAs in the sediments were strongly influenced by terrigenous input. Analysis of the relationship between dynamic influence factors and PFAA concentrations showed that the characteristics of PFAA distribution were rather complex. ΣPFAA concentrations and TOC were positively correlated (p < 0.0001). Circumfluence also influenced the whole PFAA distribution and seasonal variation. In addition, correlation analysis suggested that log K oc values increased with increasing perfluoroalkyl chain length. Halocarbons including chloroform (CHCl3), trichloroethylene (C2HCl3), tetrachloroethylene (C2Cl4), chlorodibromomethane (CHBr2Cl) and bromoform (CHBr3) were measured in the Yellow Sea (YS) and the East China Sea (ECS) during spring 2011. The influences of chlorophyll a, salinity and nutrients on the distributions of these gases were examined. Elevated levels of these gases in the coastal waters were attributed to anthropogenic inputs and biological release by phytoplankton. The vertical distributions of these gases in the water column were controlled by different source strengths and water masses. Using atmospheric concentrations measured in spring 2012 and seawater concentrations obtained from this study, the sea-to-air fluxes of these gases were estimated. Our results showed that the emissions of C2HCl3, C2Cl4, CHBr2Cl, and CHBr3 from the study area could account for 16.5%, 10.5%, 14.6%, and 3.5% of global oceanic emissions, respectively, indicating that the coastal shelf may contribute significantly to the global oceanic emissions of these gases., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
