Unplanned urbanization and heavy automobile use by the rapidly growing population contribute to a variety of environmental issues. Roadside plants can mitigate air pollution by modifying their enzymatic activity, physiological and anatomical traits. Plant enzymes, physiological and anatomical traits play an important role in adaptation and mitigation mechanisms against vehicular emissions. There is a significant gap in understanding of how plant enzymes and anatomical traits respond or how they participate in modulating the effect of vehicular emissions/air pollution. Modulation of leaf anatomical traits is also useful in regulating plant physiological behavior. Hence, the present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of vehicular pollution on the enzymatic activity, physiological, and anatomical traits of plant species that grow in forests (S1) and alongside roads (S2-1 km away from the S1 site) during different seasons. The present study examines four commonly found roadside tree species i.e. Grevillea robusta, Cassia fistula, Quercus leucotrichophora and Cornus oblonga. The study found that the activities of catalase and phenylalanine ammonium enzymes were higher in G. robusta species of roadside than control site (S1). Non-enzymatic antioxidants such as flavonoid and phenol were also found in higher concentrations in roadside tree species during the summer season. However, the measured values of physiological traits were higher in Q. leucotrichophora tree species of S1 during the summer season. When compared to the other species along the roadside, Q. leucotrichophora had the highest number of stomata and epidermal cells during the summer season. Microbial communities are considered as vital members to reflect the health of a riverine system. Among them, pathogenic and fecal indicators imply health risks involved with potability of river water. The present study explores the diverse microbial communities, distribution pattern of potential pathogens, and fecal indicators between the geographically distinct Himalayan and Peninsular river systems of India. It also inquires into the environmental factors associated with community variance and distribution pattern of microbial indicators. The application of high-throughput amplicon sequencing approach unveiled significant demarcation (p < 0.004, Anosim R = 0.62) of samples suggesting unique microbial diversities in these two river sediments. Random forest analysis revealed Desulfobulbulus, PSB&#95;M&#95;3, and Opitutus in Himalayan, while DA101, Bacillus, and Streptomyces in the Peninsular as significant contributors to develop overall dissimilarity between the river systems. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance and co-occurrence network analysis were used to study the relationships between microbial taxa and environmental factors. Amongst the various studied environmental parameters, pH, K, Ca, Mg, Ba, and Al in the Himalayan and salinity, Na, temperature, and Th in the Peninsular significantly influenced shaping of distinct microbial communities. Furthermore, the potential pathogenic genera, including Flavobacterium, Clostridium, Arcobacter, Pseudomonas, and Bacillus were highly prevalent in both the river systems. Arcobacter, Clostridium, Acinetobacter, Bacteroides, and Caloramator were the prominent fecal indicators in these river systems. Our findings provide salient information about the crucial role and interplay between various environmental factors and anthropogenic influences in framing the microbiome of the distinct river systems in India. Moreover, assessing potential pathogenic and fecal indicators suggest the public health risk associated with untreated sewage discharge into these water sources. The central mountainous area of Japan is affected by air pollutant emissions from nearby countries such as China and Korea. Sharp increases in the consumption of fossil fuels in the early 21st century, associated with rapid industrialization in China, resulted in long-range transport of pollutants from East Asia and increases in the harmful effects of pollution. However, the air pollutants emissions have decreased since 2006, when air pollution countermeasures were implemented in China. Furthermore, climatic patterns during 2008-2013 reduced tropospheric ozone concentrations around Japan. Such major changes in the social and climatic environment may have had a significant impact on forests. To investigate this, long-term forest monitoring data obtained at Buna-daira (1190 m a.s.l.), Buna-zaka (1090 m a.s.l.) and Arimine (1350 m a.s.l.) were analyzed. Buna-daira and Buna-zaka forests face the continental side of Mt. Tateyama in Toyama Prefecture. In both stands, the girth growth rate of Fagus crenata was found to have increased after 2008; however, such a tendency was not detected at Arimine, which is surrounded by mountains. The growth rates of Cryptomeria japonica, a conifer resistant to air pollution, were found to remain unchanged or decrease. Here, regional long-range transport of air pollution (including ozone and sulfur oxide) has been demonstrated to influence mountain forests in Japan. Natural levels of heavy metals (HM) have increased during the industrial era to the point of posing a serious threat to the environment. The use of tree species to record contamination is a well-known practice. The objective of the study was to compare HM levels under different pollution conditions: a) soil pollution due to mining waste; b) atmospheric pollution due to coal-fired power plant emissions. We report significant HM enrichment in Pinus halepensis tissues. Near a burning power plant, Pb content in a tree wood was 2.5-fold higher that in natural areas (no pollution; NP). In mining areas, Cd content was 25-fold higher than NP. The hypothesis that HM contents in tree rings should register pollution is debatable. In recent decades, naturally growing mosses have been used successfully as biomonitors of atmospheric deposition of heavy metals and nitrogen. Since 1990, the European moss survey has been repeated at five-yearly intervals. In 2010, the lowest concentrations of metals and nitrogen in mosses were generally found in northern Europe, whereas the highest concentrations were observed in (south-)eastern Europe for metals and the central belt for nitrogen. Averaged across Europe, since 1990, the median concentration in mosses has declined the most for lead (77%), followed by vanadium (55%), cadmium (51%), chromium (43%), zinc (34%), nickel (33%), iron (27%), arsenic (21%, since 1995), mercury (14%, since 1995) and copper (11%). Between 2005 and 2010, the decline ranged from 6% for copper to 36% for lead; for nitrogen the decline was 5%. To assess the relationship between nitrogen concentrations in mosses and wet bulk nitrogen deposition or concentrations in precipitation, moss tissue and deposition were sampled within a distance of 1 km of each other in seven European countries. Relationships for various forms of nitrogen appeared to be asymptotic, with data for different countries being positioned at different locations along the asymptotic relationship and saturation occurring at a wet bulk nitrogen deposition of ca. 20 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1). The asymptotic behaviour was more pronounced for ammonium-N than nitrate-N, with high ammonium deposition at German sites being most influential in providing evidence of the asymptotic behaviour. Within countries, relationships were only significant for Finland and Switzerland and were more or less linear. The results confirm previous relationships described for modelled total deposition. Gene expression responses of paper birch (Betula papyrifera) leaves to elevated concentrations of CO(2) and O(3) were studied with microarray analyses from three time points during the summer of 2004 at Aspen FACE. Microarray data were analyzed with clustering techniques, self-organizing maps, K-means clustering and Sammon's mappings, to detect similar gene expression patterns within sampling times and treatments. Most of the alterations in gene expression were caused by O(3), alone or in combination with CO(2). O(3) induced defensive reactions to oxidative stress and earlier leaf senescence, seen as decreased expression of photosynthesis- and carbon fixation-related genes, and increased expression of senescence-associated genes. The effects of elevated CO(2) reflected surplus of carbon that was directed to synthesis of secondary compounds. The combined CO(2)+O(3) treatment resulted in differential gene expression than with individual gas treatments or in changes similar to O(3) treatment, indicating that CO(2) cannot totally alleviate the harmful effects of O(3)., (2009 Elsevier Ltd. Nitrogen deposition in Finland was investigated on the basis of the nitrogen concentration in the forest moss, Hylocomium splendens, collected during heavy metal moss surveys carried out in 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005/06. Significant regional differences were found in the nitrogen concentrations in mosses. The concentrations were the highest in the southern part of the country in all the surveys, with a decreasing trend on moving northwards. The mean concentrations in the surveys were 1.07%, 1.00%, 0.89% and 0.92%. In general, the concentrations in mosses reflected nitrogen deposition at the level of the whole country. However, they did not correlate very well with the modelled nitrogen deposition because of the high local variation in the nitrogen concentration in H. splendens. One reason for the high variation was the effect of the structure of the tree stand on nitrogen concentrations in H. splendens.

Phenogenetic response of silver birch populations and half-sib families to separate and combined elevated ozone (O(3)) concentrations and ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation dozes was studied at juvenile age in the climatic chambers. Significant population and family effects were found for seedling height, lamina width, and leaf damage. The exposure to UV-B radiation decreased genetic variation at the stage of seed germination. Complex exposure to UV-B and O(3) caused an increase of genetic variation at the stage of intensive seedling growth: seedling height genetic variation in separate treatments increased from 23.7-38.6 to 33.7-65.7%, the increase for lamina width was from 10.2-13.9 to 13.6-31.8%. Different populations and families demonstrated differing response to elevated complex UV-B and O(3) exposure. Changes of genetic intra-population variation were population-specific. Such changes in genetic variation under the impact of stressors can alter adaptation, stability, and competitive ability of regenerating populations in a hardly predictive way.

The effect of nitrogen on biomass production, shoot elongation and relative density of the mosses Pleurozium schreberi, Hylocomium splendens and Dicranum polysetum was studied in a chamber experiment. Monocultures were exposed to 10 N levels ranging from 0.02 to 7.35 g N m(-2) during a 90-day period. All the growth responses were unimodal, but the species showed differences in the shape parameters of the curves. Hylocomium and Pleurozium achieved optimum biomass production at a lower N level than Dicranum. Pleurozium had the highest biomass production per tissue N concentration. Tolerance to N was the widest in Dicranum, whereas Hylocomium had the narrowest tolerance. Dicranum retained N less efficiently from precipitation than the other two species, which explained its deviating response. All species translocated some N from parent to new shoots. The results emphasize that the individual responses of bryophytes to N should be known when species are used as bioindicators.

Data from a large-scale foliar survey were used to calculate the extent to which N and S deposition determined the mineral composition of Scots pine and Norway spruce needles in Finland. Foliar data were available from 367 needle samples collected on 36 plots sampled almost annually between 1987 and 2000. A literature study of controlled experiments revealed that acidifying deposition mediates increasing N and S concentrations, and decreasing Mg:N and Ca:Al ratios in the needles. When this fingerprint for N and S elevated deposition on tree foliage was observed simultaneously with increased N and S inputs, it was considered sufficient evidence for assuming that acidifying deposition had altered the mineral composition of tree needles on that plot in the given year. Evidence for deposition-induced changes in the mineral composition of tree foliage was calculated on the basis of a simple frequency model. In the late eighties the evidence was found on 43% of the Norway spruce and 27% of Scots pine plots. The proportion of changed needle mineral composition decreased to below 8% for both species in the late nineties.

This study investigates changes in tree condition and environmental factors in Lithuania during the active growing season in 1991-2001. The average crown defoliation and the proportion of healthy trees of Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies, Betula sp., Fraxinus excelsior, Alnus incana, Alnus glutinosa, Populus tremula, and Quercus robur, meteorological (average temperature, amount of precipitation, hydrothermal coefficient) and air pollution data (acidity of precipitation, concentrations of SO2, NO2 and exposure of O3) were analysed. During the period 1991-2001 the condition of Pinus sylvestris, Populus tremula showed a tendency of improvement, while defoliation of Fraxinus excelsior significantly increased. The proportion of healthy trees correlated well with the average temperature and O3 (AOT40), while defoliation correlated well with the acidity of precipitation and the concentrations of SO2 and NO2. Deciduous species appeared to be more sensitive to O3 exposure and conifers to the concentrations of SO2 and NO2.

Epicuticular waxes of three trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) clones differing in O3 tolerance were examined over six growing seasons (1998-2003) at three bioindicator sites in the Lake States region of the USA and at FACTS II (Aspen FACE) site in Rhinelander, WI. Differences in epicuticular wax structure were determined by scanning electron microscopy and quantified by a coefficient of occlusion. Statistically significant increases in stomatal occlusion occurred for the three O3 bioindicator sites, with the higher O3 sites having the most affected stomata for all three clones as well as for all treatments including elevated CO2, elevated O3, and elevated CO2 + O3. We recorded statistically significant differences between aspen clones and between sampling period (spring, summer, fall). We found no statistically significant differences between treatments or aspen clones in stomatal frequency.

As a part of a broader research into the nutrition of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.), the variation of calcium concentrations was investigated in needles and soil in two subsequent, climatologically diverse years. Statistically significant differences between plots were determined in Ca concentrations in soils. Concentrations of Ca in needles were statistically different regarding plot, defoliation class, sampling date within the same year and also between years. Fir trees on acid-rock based soils had lower, often inadequate concentrations of Ca in needles; the opposite was true for trees growing on Ca-rich soils. Trees of lower vitality generally exhibited poor Ca nutrition. Drought in the second year of research caused poor absorption of Ca on all plots and in all defoliation classes, but the combined influence of climate and soil properties affected especially trees of low vitality on acid-rock based soils.

The spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus (L.) is the most serious pest of mature spruce stands, mainly Norway spruce, Picea abies (L.) Karst. throughout Eurasia. A complex of weather-related events and other environmental stresses are reported to predispose spruce stands to bark beetle attack and subsequent tree mortality; however the possible role of industrial pollution as a predisposing factor to attack by this species is poorly understood. The abundance and dynamics of I. typographus populations was evaluated in 60-80 year old Norway spruce stands occurring on 10 x 50 ha sites in five countries within the Carpathian range that were selected in proximity to established ozone measurement sites. Data were recorded on several parameters including the volume of infested trees, captures of adult beetles in pheromone traps, number of attacks, and the presence and relative abundance of associated bark beetle species. In several cases, stands adjacent to sites with higher ozone values were associated with higher bark beetle populations. The volume of sanitary cuttings, a reflection of tree mortality, and the mean daily capture of beetles in pheromone traps were significantly higher at sites where the O(3) level was higher. However, the mean infestation density on trees was higher in plots associated with lower O(3) levels. Captures of beetles in pheromone traps and infestation densities were higher in the zone above 800 m. However, none of the relationships was conclusive, suggesting that spruce bark beetle dynamics are driven by a complex interaction of biotic and abiotic factors and not by a single parameter such as air pollution.

The effects of air pollution on the genetic structure of Norway spruce, European silver fir and European beech were studied at four polluted sites in Slovakia, Romania and Czech Republic. In order to reduce potential effects of site heterogeneity on the health condition, pair-wise sampling of pollution-tolerant and sensitive trees was applied. Genotypes of sampled trees were determined at 21 isozyme gene loci of spruce, 18 loci of fir and 15 loci of beech. In comparison with Norway spruce, fewer genetic differences were revealed in beech and almost no differentiation between pollution-tolerant and sensitive trees was observed in fir. In adult stands of Norway spruce, sensitive trees exhibited higher genetic multiplicity and diversity. The decline of pollution-sensitive trees may result thus in a gradual genetic depletion of pollution-exposed populations of Norway spruce through the loss of less frequent alleles with potential adaptive significance to altered stressing regimes in the future. Comparison of the subsets of sensitive and tolerant Norway spruce individuals as determined by presence or absence of discolorations ("spruce yellowing") revealed different heterozygosity at 3 out of 11 polymorphic loci.

Concentrations of Al, B, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, N, Na, P, S and Zn in the foliage of white fir (Abies alba), Norway spruce (Picea abies) and common beech (Fagus sylvatica) from 25 sites of the Carpathian Mts. forests (Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine) are discussed in a context of their limit values. S/N ratio was different from optimum in 90% of localities when compared with the European limit values. Likewise we found increase of Fe and Cu concentrations compared with their background levels in 100% of locations. Mn concentrations were increased in 76% of localities. Mn mobilization values indicate the disturbance of physiological balance leading to the change of the ratio with Fe. SEM-investigation of foliage waxes from 25 sites in the Carpathian Mts. showed, that there is a statistically significant difference in mean wax quality. Epistomatal waxes were damaged as indicated by increased development of net and amorphous waxes. The most damaged stomata in spruce needles were from Yablunitsa, Synevir and Brenna; in fir needles from Stoliky, and in beech leaves from Malá Fatra, Morské Oko and Beregomet. Spruce needles in the Carpathian Mts. had more damaged stomata than fir needles and beech leaves. Spruce seems to be the most sensitive tree species to environmental stresses including air pollution in forests of the Carpathian Mountains. Foliage surfaces of three forest tree species contained Al, Si, Ca, Fe, Mg, K, Cl, Mn, Na, Ni and Ti in all studied localities. Presence of nutrition elements (Ca, Fe, Mg, K and Mn) on foliage surface hinders opening and closing stomata and it is not physiologically usable for tree species.

Since 1994 the nickel-processing plant at the Cu-Ni smelter at Harjavalta, south-west Finland, has emitted considerable amounts of NH(3) into the atmosphere. The effects of NH(3) emissions on nitrogen and sulphur deposition in throughfall and the foliar nutrient status were investigated in a Scots pine stand at 0.5 km distance. Bulk deposition, stand throughfall and percolation water (20 cm depth) samples were collected at 4-week intervals during 1992-1998. pH and the Ca, Mg, K, NH(4) and SO(4) concentrations were determined on the samples. NH(3) emissions have strongly increased the scavenging of SO(2) from the air in the pine stand, and the increased levels of N and S deposition were clearly evident as increased foliar N and S concentrations and larger needle size. The increased input of SO(4) into the forest floor was not associated with an increase in the leaching of Ca and Mg from the surface soil layers.

The copper (Cu) resistance of Arctostaphylos uva-ursi was tested in a pot experiment (lasting 8 weeks) using rooted cuttings originating from an area near the Harjavalta Cu-Ni smelter, SW Finland. The fine roots were moderately infected by arbutoid mycorrhizae. The plants were exposed to five Cu levels (1, 10, 22, 46 and 100 mg l(-1)) given repeatedly together with a nutrient solution. The critical Cu concentration in the nutrient solution inhibiting the growth of A. uva-ursi was below 10 mg l(-1) Cu (EC(50) value for biomass production 3.3 mg l(-1) Cu). This concentration was clearly lower than the value we have found earlier for other dwarf shrubs under similar experimental conditions. Most of the Cu given accumulated in the roots and old stems. The results suggest that A. uva-ursi cuttings were relatively sensitive to Cu despite the ability of the adult clones to grow in Cu-contaminated soil. The adult clones extend their roots into the less toxic deeper soil layers, which may facilitate the avoidance of heavy metals.

This paper compares the effects of single and repeated fertilisation on the contents of potassium, 134Cs and 137Cs in different Scots pine compartments at different levels above ground and in the peat profile 9 years after the Chernobyl disaster. The material was collected from a ditch spacing and fertilisation experiment in Finland. Above a needle potassium concentration of 3.0 mg g(-1) in composed crown samples, 137Cs and 134Cs concentrations remained at about the same level but below that the values were higher on average. This potassium value corresponded to the potassium concentrations of 3.5-3.6 mg g(-1) in the current-year needles of two topmost whorls. The result indicates an enhanced radiocaesium uptake by pine trees under severe potassium deficiency. Fertilisation with potassium-containing fertilisers decreased the caesium uptake considerably. The inhibiting effect of fertilisation on caesium uptake by trees seemed to be fairly long lasting. Fertilisation had sped up the penetration of caesium downwards in the peat profile and its moving out of the active circulation of elements between soil and plants.

In this paper we present what kind of human impacted changes can be found in dwarf birch (Betula nana) dominated shrub tundra vegetation around the large industrial complex of Vorkuta in the north-European Russian tundra. Using fieldwork data and Landsat TM satellite image we could identify two impact zones: (1) Pollution zone (150-200 km2). In this zone most of the lichen species are absent. Changes in vegetation communities' species composition in all main plant groups are obvious. Willows especially are more dominant than in the unpolluted sites. (2) Slight pollution/disturbance zone (600-900 km2). Here vegetation changes are mainly similar but less so than the changes in the first zone. Particularly, the amount of herbs and grasses is increased when compared to unpolluted areas. The pollution zones are spatially connected to the main emission sources in the area. Zones spread furthest to the northeast, matching the prevailing winds during winter.

A combination of paired site, time series, and survey approaches were used to estimate the effect of land use change on mineral soil carbon (C), and to identify factors associated with variation. Land-uses compared included podocarp/hardwood forest, improved pasture, and pine plantation. Soil C was significantly related to soil pH that ranged between 3.9-5.9 (0-0.05 m), 3.6-6.0 (0.05-0.10 m), and 4.5-6.1 (0.10-0.50 m) in indigenous forest. Time series data obtained by periodically re-sampling soil (0-0.10 m) in permanent plots in a pine forest previously under pasture showed that mineral soil C decrease by approximately 4 Mg ha(-1) by the end of the first rotation. The time series data compared closely with mean results obtained at paired-site throughout New Zealand. Soil C concentration was highly variable in all land-uses, and the evidence suggests that chemical stabilisation of C occurred under acid conditions in native forest, through complexation with Al, and that effects persisted long after conversion of the native forest to other land-uses. The implications of these findings for the design of sampling protocols for soil C are discussed.

Along with a steady reduction of acid inputs during 14 years of intensive forest monitoring in Norway, the influence of acid deposition upon soil water acidity is gradually reduced in favour of other and internal sources of H+ and sulphate, in particular from processes in the upper soil layer. We used statistical analyses in two steps for precipitation, throughfall and soil water at 5, 15 and 40 cm depths. Firstly, we employed time series analyses to model the temporal variation as a long-term linear trend and a monthly variation, and by this filtered out residual, weekly variation. Secondly, we used the parameter estimates and the residuals from this to show that the long term, the monthly and the weekly variation in one layer were correlated to similar temporal variation in the above, adjacent layer. This was strongly evident for throughfall correlated to precipitation, but much weaker for soil water. Continued acidification in soil water on many plots suggests that the combined effects of anthropogenic and natural acid inputs exceed in places the buffering capacity of the soil.

Chlorophyll, organic (citric and malic acids) and abscisic acid (ABA) contents and stem water potential were measured to indicate possible physiological effects of heavy metal deposition on Empetrum nigrum L. (crowberry). The leaves and stems of E. nigrum were collected at distances of 0.5 and 8 km from the Cu-Ni smelter at Harjavalta, south-west Finland. All the investigated parameters were clearly affected by heavy metal emissions. Chlorophyll contents in the leaves and organic acid contents in the leaves and stems were lower close to the emission source. Generally found increase in organic acid contents with increasing Ni concentrations was not found, which might be due to the lower production of organic acids measured by decreased photosynthesis near the smelter. In contrast, ABA contents in stems and leaves in general, were higher in plants growing 0.5 km from the pollution source. Close to the smelter the stem water potential of E. nigrum was less negative during the day but more negative during the night. These results suggest that smelter emissions have a negative effect on the ecophysiology of E. nigrum even though it is considered to be a tolerant species to heavy metals.

Understorey vegetation of Scots pine forests was studied along a 8-km transect running SE from a Cu-Ni smelter at Harjavalta, SW Finland. Long-term accumulation of heavy metals and sulphur in the forest ecosystem has drastically changed plant communities. Vegetation was almost absent up to a distance of 0.5 km from the smelter. The total coverage and the number of plant species increased with increasing distance from the smelter. Ordination by global non-metric multidimensional scaling (GNMDS) indicated that the floristic composition was differentiated in response to the pollution level. The main compositional gradient of GNMDS was correlated with the heavy metal concentrations in the organic soil layer and with the size of the overstorey trees. Vascular plants were more pollution-resistant than ground lichens, whereas mosses were the most sensitive plant group. In addition to heavy metals, nutrient imbalances and the considerably reduced water-holding capacity of the surface soil also restrict plant recolonisation on the degraded sites.

The effects of industrial pollution on allelic and genotypic structures of Norway spruce. European silver fir and European beech were investigated by means of isozyme analysis. In a mixed Norway spruce-silver fir forest stand in an area heavily polluted by sulphur dioxide and heavy metals in the region of Spis (eastern Slovakia), pairs of neighbouring damaged and apparently healthy trees were selected in two replicates (44 and 69 pairs in a heavily and moderately damaged stand, respectively). Pairwise sampling of trees with contrasting vitality was applied to reduce potential effects of site heterogeneity on the vitality of sampled trees. No significant differences in allelic and genotypic frequencies were found between sets of healthy and declining trees. There were differences in the single-locus heterozygosities, but these were not consistent between the replicates. However, the set of damaged trees exhibited higher levels of genetic multiplicity and diversity, possibly due to the deleterious effect of rare alleles under the conditions of air pollution. Consequently. following the decline of pollutant-sensitive trees, the remaining stand will be depleted of a part of alleles with unknown adaptive value to future selection pressures.

The decomposition of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) fine root and needle litter was examined along a heavy metal pollution gradient in the vicinity of Harjavalta Metals Smelter complex at Harjavalta, south-west Finland. The study area was found to exhibit a defined gradient of copper and nickel soil contamination along a 8 km long transect starting at 0.5 km from the point emission source with the highest levels found at this site. The background site is located 200 km from the point source. The majority of the heavy metals are confined to the soil organic layer. Litter decomposition and litter quality were compared between litter types after 12, 18, and 30 months incubation at each of four sites. The analyses clearly showed differences in accumulated mass loss, C:N ratio, and nutrient composition that were related to the site of incubation. Needle and fine root litter that was incubated at 0.5 km had a lower accumulated mass loss, 28.1 and 40.9%, respectively, over time when compared to litter incubated at the background site (37.9 and 50.9%, respectively). Concentrations of exchangeable cations in the litter incubated at 0.5 km were considerably less. The heavy metal contamination may provide an explanation for the amount of mass lost and the litter quality through impacts on the soil microbiota.

Empetrum nigrum L. (crowberry) is one of the plants surviving near the Cu-Ni smelters in Finland and Russia. According to field observations, the fine roots of E. nigrum are situated below 40 cm depth and the root biomass is reduced in the polluted sites. This could cause a reduced root uptake of macronutrients and trace elements in the field and, therefore, the possible element uptake by aboveground parts of E. nigrum was studied in a greenhouse. Six different treatment solutions containing various heavy metal and macronutrient concentrations were applied to the stems and leaves of E. nigrum and the chemical composition and ecophysiological parameters were measured. Heavy metal concentrations in the leaves and stem bark, and Cu concentrations in the stems, increased with increasing metal concentrations in the spraying solutions. The bark and leaves had higher heavy metal concentrations than the stems of comparable age classes. The macronutrient and Mn concentrations in E. nigrum did not change significantly with increasing element concentrations in the spraying solution. Neither the stem water potential nor the leaf chlorophyll concentrations showed any clear response to element applications. Therefore, the element uptake by aboveground parts of E. nigrum was not confirmed by this study. However, there was a tendency to a decrease in CO2 exchange rate and increase in foliar abscisic acid content in plants treated with the highest element concentrations.

Mean annual (1994-1996) budgets for Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn at two background, forested catchments, VK and HJ, in Finland are presented. Budgets for plots (VK3, HJ1 and HJ4) included throughfall (TF), litterfall (LF) and soil leaching fluxes, and for catchments terrestrial retention and leaching and lake sedimentation fluxes. Total deposition (TD) loads were relatively low (Cd < 0.1, Cu < 2, Ni < 1, Pb < 3 and Zn < 5 mg m-2 year-1) and that even in these areas almost half of the TD was in the form of dry deposition. Retention of TD within catchments was > or = 77% for all metals, except for Ni at VK (54%). For Cu and Pb, the retention was 94-97%. Most of the retention (74-97%) took place in the terrestrial part of the catchment, lake sedimentation accounting for the remainder. Plot-scale soil leaching fluxes at 40 cm of Cd, Cu (VK3) and Ni (VK3) were greater (> or = 100%) than TD inputs. Most of the catchment retention must therefore have taken place either deeper in the soil or in the lowland peatland areas. The humus layer was particularly effective in retaining Cu and Cd (65-81% and 51-78% of total inputs to the forest floor (TF + LF)). The retention of Pb by the humus layer was less than expected (26-54% of TF + LF). Litterfall was a particularly important internal flux for Zn.

The Cu and Ni tolerance of 3- to 5-year-old cuttings of crowberry (Empetrum nigrum) were tested in controlled conditions. Six levels of Cu (0.1-100 mg l(-1)), five levels of Ni (0-100 mg l(-1)) and nine levels of Cu+Ni were applied. The elongation of the shoots, new shoot and root dry weights indicated an adverse effect of increasing Cu and Ni concentrations. At low Cu levels the addition of Ni decreased the dry weights more than at high Cu levels. The results show that E. nigrum accumulated high concentrations of Cu and Ni mainly in old stem tissue, which contained a maximum of over 3000 mg kg(-1) Cu and 1000 mg kg(-1) Ni. The concentrations of Cu and Ni in E. nigrum were higher than those measured in plants growing in areas near to Cu-Ni smelters, but the accumulation pattern was similar. The survival of the cuttings was not affected suggesting that E. nigrum possesses an internal heavy metal tolerance.

The copper (Cu) resistance of 1-year-old seedlings of heather (Calluna vulgaris) was tested in a greenhouse experiment. The plant material originated from seeds collected from three peatland sites located 1.2 km to the NW, and 2.5 and 5.5 km to the NE of the Harjavalta Cu-nickel (Ni) smelter, SW Finland. The plants were watered with a nutrient solution containing five different levels of Cu (1, 10, 22, 46 and 100 mg l(-1)). Cu clearly decreased the length growth of shoots, shoot and root biomass of C. vulgaris. More than 50% of the seedlings exposed to the highest Cu treatment died. C. vulgaris accumulated high amounts of Cu, the living old roots containing a maximum of 2200 mg kg(-1) Cu and the living stems 1300 mg kg(-1) Cu. Discolouring leaves contained higher Cu concentrations than green leaves. The results indicate Cu accumulation in roots and root-to-shoot transport. Some differences were found between the responses of the three seed provenances, but none of the populations proved to be more resistant to Cu than the others in all the measured responses.

Four experiments were established in 1992 in Scots pine stands (Pinus sylvestris L.) on relatively infertile sites at distances of 0.5, 2, 4 and 8 km to the south-east of the Cu-Ni smelter at Harjavalta, south-west Finland, in order to investigate the effects of liming, correction fertiliser and site-specific fertiliser treatments on heavy metal (Cu, Ni) and macronutrient (Ca, Mg, K) availability in the organic layer. The organic layer samples were analysed for total, plant-available (BaCl(2)+EDTA) and water-extractable Ca, Mg, K, Cu and Ni. A high proportion of the Cu and Ni at 0.5 km was in a non-toxic, immobilised form. Liming had only a relatively small reducing effect on free and exchangeable Cu and Ni concentrations at 0.5 km. The lack of pH increase following liming may be due to the precipitation of Fe, present in very high concentrations close to the smelter, as Fe(OH)(3), resulting in the loss of neutralising bicarbonate and hydroxyl ions, but the release of Ca and Mg. Liming strongly increased Ca and Mg availability. The correction fertiliser had no effect on Ca or K availability at any of the sites.

Bulk precipitation and stand throughfall were collected during 1992-96 at distances of 0.5, 4 and 8 km from the Harjavalta Cu-Ni smelter, southwestern Finland. The amounts of heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Zn, Fe) and mineral nutrients in bulk precipitation and throughfall were highest at 0.5 km. Although the canopy coverage was low at 0.5 km, the amounts of heavy metals intercepted by the canopy were extremely high. The proportion of foliar leaching relative to the wash-off of dry deposition from the needle surfaces decreased on moving towards the smelter for all elements, except for K. The high rate of K leaching from the needle tissues close to the smelter demonstrated that the K throughfall flux has been greatly altered by the heavy pollution load.

Four experiments were established (1992) in Scots pine stands at distances of 0.5, 2, 4 and 8 km along a line running to the SE of the Cu-Ni smelter at Harjavalta, SW Finland, in order to investigate the effects of Cu and Ni emissions on macronutrient availability and estimates of cation exchange capacity (CEC) and base saturation (BS). The accumulation of Cu and Ni (total, exchangeable) in forest soil close to the smelter has resulted in a deficit of base cations (exchangeable Ca, Mg, K and BS) in the organic layer caused by inhibition of mineralisation and the displacement of base cations from cation exchange sites by Cu and Ni cations. No signs of soil acidification were found in the topmost layers of the soil measured as a change in pH, exchangeable acidity and Al. The determination of CEC by the summation method in heavy-metal polluted forest soils is not recommended unless heavy metal cations are also included in the calculations.

Atmospheric deposition of sulphur and nitrogen compounds may lead to enhanced leaching of base cations, accumulation of nitrogen in organic matter, lowered pH and increased concentration of toxic aluminium in soil, which in turn may affect the vitality of forest trees. A general monitoring of forest condition has been initiated in many European countries, partly in order to reveal stresses caused by acidification. However, forest condition is also affected by many other factors. This paper examines a seven-year series of crown-condition data from Local County Monitoring Plots in Norway spruce stands in Norway. Average, time trend and lability variables were calculated for crown density and crown colour for each plot. Wet deposition of sulphate, ammonium and nitrate for each plot were estimated using data from the national air and precipitation monitoring programmes. Soil data are based on soil sampling within the plots. The analysis gave no evident support for the hypothesized negative effect on crown condition from sulphur and nitrogen deposition and related alterations in soil.

Decadal exposure to emissions from a non-ferrous smelter has damaged the forest ecosystems surrounding the city of Monchegorsk located on the Kola Peninsula in northwestern Russia. We use the methods of tree-ring analysis to study the areal extent and timing of recent growth reductions of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in the region surrounding the smelter in Monchegorsk. Reduced growth of Scots pine was observed up to 30 km southwest of the smelter. This directional gradient of forest damage is related to the dispersal of pollutants which is influenced by the prevailing northern winds and local topographic features. Old Scots pines (age 200 years +) appeared to be more sensitive than younger ones: growth reductions of old trees had started earlier and reductions were observed farther from the smelter than for younger trees. The findings are compared to a classification which describes the state of forest ecosystems based on the occurrence of certain plant species; the classification matched well with the observed growth trends. Pollution-induced changes in the climatic signal in tree-rings are also studied. The strong dependence of growth on mid-summer temperatures, typical for Scots pine on high latitudes, proved to be insensitive to effects of pollution. Changes in the climate-growth relationship took place decades after growth trends had started to decline.

Samples of bone, teeth and antlers of 123 wild, forest reindeer (Rangifer tarandus fennica) shot in North Karelia and in the Archangelsk region from 1986 to 1990 were investigated with regard to heavy metal and sulphur content. The samples of bone contained the highest mean levels of cadmium and lead, and the antlers contained the lowest mean heavy-metal concentrations. No differences in the sulphur content of different tissues were found. These tissues give reliable and sensitive indications of industrial pollution in the forest ecosystems.

Eggs (n = 52) of four aquatic bird species (Larus canus, Larus argentatus, Larus ridibundus, Sterna hirundo) and crow (Corvus cornix), collected in Southern Karelia in 1989 and 1990, contained DDE and lindane. The highest mean levels of these pollutants were in herring gull eggs and in common tern eggs. The lowest mean levels of pesticides were in crow eggs. In all eggs, DDE concentrations were lower than the critical threshold and it seems, cannot influence reproductive success.

The effect of ozone (< 10, 200 or 400 microg m(-3) on hexane- and dichloromethane-soluble components of Picea abies needles was determined by fumigating potted grafts from mature trees. The trees (>55 and 125 years, 2.5 m high), representing six clones of Norway spruce, were fumigated in open-top chambers at two locations in Norway for one growth season. The needles were extracted with hexane and dichloromethane; 142 compounds from the hexane extract and 164 silylated compounds from the dichloromethane extract were analysed by gas chromatography although no identifications were made. The concentration of four of the compounds from the hexane extract changed with ozone dose in a way that made them promising as indicators, but the present analytical method could not verify this possibility. None of the other 302 compounds qualified as a general indicator of ozone stress in Norway spruce, as none changed its concentration with ozone dose consistently in all romets of all clones. Most of the variation in the experiment is mainly attributable to genetic variation and to climate.

The effect of ozone (< 10, 200, or 400 microg m(-3)), on foliar nutrient concentrations of Picea abies were determined by fumigating potted grafts from mature trees (> 55 and 125 years), representing six clones, in open-top chambers at two locations in Norway. The concentration of nutrients in needles of grafted plants were significantly affected by clone and location. Generally, the concentrations of nutrients were not affected by ozone, but a significant increase in the concentrations of potassium and iron in two of the clones were found. These two clones were the only ones injured (yellow needles) by the fumigation.

Exposure to moderate concentrations (90-500 microg SO(2) m(-3)) of SO(2) for 5-30 days caused a decrease in the photosynthetic rate. Only the lowest concentration (30 microg SO(2) m(-3)) increased photosynthesis. There was hardly any recovery in photosynthesis after the exposure. All exposure concentrations increased dark respiration. However, the lowest concentration had the smallest effect. Exposure to high concentration (2320 microg SO(2) m(-3)) of SO(2) for 5 h caused a strong decrease in the photosynthetic rate but there was a complete recovery within 2 weeks.

The concentrations of cadmium, copper, nickel and lead were studied in two biennial pine insects in relation to the deposition of heavy metals in the environment around the industrialised town of Harjavalta in southwestern Finland. Sap-sucking pine bark bugs, Aradus cinnamomeus (Heteroptera, Aradidae), and gall-forming pine resin gall moths, Petrova resinella (Lepidoptera, Tortricidae) were collected on sample plots located at logarithmic distances along 9 km-long transects from the distinctive emission source. The responses of these insects representing different life-style were compared. Heavy metal concentrations in A. cinnamomeus were highest (Cd 17 microg g(-1), Cu 1900 microg g(-1), Ni 220 microg g(-1), Pb 32 microg g(-1)) in the vicinity of the factor complex, and lowest in the outermost zones. This trend followed a linear regression model. The pattern was less clear in P. resinella, the concentrations being only one-tenth of those recorded in A. cinnamomeus. Correlations between metal levels in A. cinnamomeus and previously examined Sphagnum moss bags proved to be highly significant in every case. The differences in the heavy metal concentrations of these two insect species, which occupy the same trophic position, would appear to be due to the differences in their feeding characteristics. Heavy metals accumulate in the posterior bulb of the midgut in the discontinuous alimentary system of A. cinnamomeus, while P. resinella is likely to secrete most of the metals into the walls of the galls. The almost total absence of these two insect species near the factory complex seems to be associated with the high concentrations of metals.

The concentrations of copper, iron, nickel and cadmium were studied in cocoons of four pine sawfly species, viz. Gilpinia virens, G. frutetorum, Microdiprion pallipes and Neodiprion sertifer. Larvae were reared in the laboratory on needles of Scots pine collected along a pollution gradient around a copper smelter in SW Finland. Heavy metal concentrations in all the species and needles decreased with increasing distance from the pollution source in accordance with linear regression models. Metal levels were highest in M. pallipes and lowest in G. virens, being only about one half to one quarter of those in M. pallipes. Concentrations of copper, iron and nickel in the insects were lower than in their food. Cadmium bioaccumulated in N. sertifer, G. frutetorum and, especially, in M. pallipes. The differences in these closely related pine defoliators are comparable to those between different trophic levels or species with entirely different feeding characteristics.

In the first part, this contribution presents German results of nitrogen fertilisation experiments on stand growth, published 1958-1987. Over this period Norway spruce and Scots pine have generally responded positively to nitrogen fertilisation, without showing signs of damage, at levels up to at least 1000 kg N ha(-1). In the second part, growth patterns of forest trees and stands in Southern Germany are presented. Norway spruce in particular is now growing better than in earlier years of this century, starting around 1960. It is plausible that increasing nitrogen deposition, which coincides with the growth increase, is the cause, though this cannot be shown unequivocally. At a few sites with poor soil and management and high acid deposition a deterioration is taking place.
