An intensive investigation was conducted to study the accumulation, speciation, and distribution of various heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in sediments from the Yangtze River catchment of Wuhan, China. The potential ecological risks posed by these heavy metals also were estimated. The median concentrations of most heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were higher than the background values of soils in Wuhan and were beyond the threshold effect level (TEL), implying heavy metal contamination of the sediments. Carbonate-bound Cd and exchangeable Cd, both of which had high bioavailability, were 40.2% and 30.5% of the total for Cd, respectively, demonstrating that Cd poses a high ecological risk in the sediments. The coefficients of the relationship among Pb, Hg, and Cu were greater than 0.797 using correlation analysis, indicating the highly positive correlation among these three elements. Besides, total organic carbon content played an important role in determining the behaviors of heavy metals in sediments. Principal component analysis was used to study the distribution and potential origin of heavy metals. The result suggested three principal components controlling their variability in sediments, which accounted for 36.72% (factor 1: Hg, Cu, and Pb), 28.69% (factor 2: Cr, Zn, and Ni), and 19.45% (factor 3: As and Cd) of the total variance. Overall, 75% of the studied sediment samples afforded relatively low potential ecological risk despite the fact that generally higher concentrations of heavy metals relative to TEL were detected in the sediments.

The distributions of culturable bacteria and functional bacteria associated with nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P) in the backwater areas of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) were investigated. Results from seven locations in the TGR indicated that the abundance of total bacteria was high, with 8.12 x 10(6), 2.70 x 10(7), and 6.73 x 10(10) colony-forming units per milliliter or per gram dry weight in surface water, bottom water, and sediments, respectively. Aquatic environments with higher nutrient loadings possessed higher bacteria densities and lower bacteria community diversities. Eight kinds of functional bacteria ratios, including surface water to bottom water and ratios of water to sediments, were calculated, in which four kinds of functional bacteria, namely, nitrogen-fixing bacteria, ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, and organophosphate-solubilizing bacteria, displayed obvious differences in different locations. Based on the functional bacteria ratios of water to sediments, it was found that the obtained result of location grouping from cluster analysis was similar to that based on the community-level physiological profiles studies. The above results showed that the ratios of functional bacteria could distinguish the aquatic environments with different trophic conditions in the TGR. This demonstrated that the distribution ratios of functional bacteria in aquatic environments could work as potential bioindicators to reflect the trophic condition of the water.

The levels and possible sources of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic carbons (PAHs) in the sediments from the Yellow River Delta (YRD) were investigated. The total PAH concentrations ranged from 23.9 to 520.6 microg kg(-1) with a mean value of 150.9 microg kg(-1), indicating low or medium levels compared with reported values of other deltas. The concentrations of the 16 individual PAHs presented varied profiles among different regions. The ecological risk assessment of PAHs showed that adverse effects would rarely occur in the sediments of the YRD based on the effect range-low quotients and the probability risk assessment. The PAH compositions and the principal component analysis (PCA) with multiple linear regression (MLR) uniformly presumed the mixed sources of pyrogenic- and petrogenic-deriving PAHs in the YRD. By PCA with MLR, the contributions of major sources were quantified as 36.4% from oil burning, 33.1% from biomass combustion, and 30.5% from diesel emission sources.

The residues of 13 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in surface water and HCHs and DDTs in suspended particulate matter (SPM) from rivers and lakes in Yangtze River catchment of Wuhan, China, were investigated. The concentration of total OCPs in surface water varied from 1.01 to 46.49 ng l(-1) (mean 10.55 ng l(-1)). The levels of total HCHs (SigmaHCH) and total DDTs (SigmaDDT) in surface water were in the range of 0.55-28.07 ng l(-1) and lower than detection limit to 16.71 ng l(-1), respectively, which was lower than Chinese standards on the whole. For OCPs residues in SPM, the mean levels varying from 0.20 to 34.72 ng l(-1) and 0.46 to 2.72 ng l(-1) for SigmaHCH and SigmaDDT, respectively, which ranked the relatively higher levels among Chinese studied rivers. Results from this investigation showed that previous excessive usage of technical OCPs was the main reason for the residues of HCHs and DDTs both in surface water and SPM, although some new sources were likely to occurred in the region. Apart from the OCPs in SPM originated from upstream in flood season, one of the important sources of OCP residues both in water and SPM in Yangtze River was supposed to be the inputs of its tributaries. Additionally, in situ water-SPM phase distributions of OCPs indicated that HCHs tended to transport (correction of totransport) with water as well as DDTs was prone to combine with SPM in Yangtze River catchment of Wuhan.
