The use of standard single-extraction procedures to evaluate the mobility and availability of trace elements is a common practice in most laboratories dealing with soil or sediment analysis. Most standard single-extraction procedures describe incubations last for 2 h. However, these were tested and validated for soil analysis. Applying them for sediment analysis without further investigation might be misleading and should be reviewed with care. This paper investigates the effect of incubation time on the extraction efficiency of three standard single-extracting reagents (0.01 M CaCl2, 1 M NH4NO3, and 0.05 M EDTA). Incubation experiments with sediment and soil samples lasting for 2 h, 10 h, and 10 d were performed. The results indicated that 2 h appears sufficient to reach equilibrium using CaCl2 or NH4NO3 for soil analysis; but when analyzing sediments, incubation for 10 d resulted in higher concentrations. Incubation experiments with 0.05 M EDTA showed that incubation for 2 h was enough to extract Cd from the soil sample, Mn and to a lesser extent Cd from the sediment samples; while for the other elements, incubation for 10 d yielded higher concentrations for both sample types compared to that obtained after 2 h and 10 h separately. Relative to the pseudo-total metal contents, more than 55% of all studied elements were extracted by using 0.05 M EDTA, indicating high bioavailable metal fraction.

The aim of this review was to identify the current knowledge regarding the concentration of microplastics in bivalves in the marine, estuarine, and freshwater environments. For this purpose, researches were conducted from September 2020 to February 2021 in the Scopus, Web of Science, and Google scholar databases, following a meticulous selection of articles. To comprehensively understand the selected articles, an extensive review was carried out in order to identify the methodologies employed, sampling sites, species evaluated, characteristics of the microplastics (concentrations, shapes, sizes, and polymers) and their relationship with the concentration of this particles in the environment. A total of 93 articles were selected, with an exponential growth in the number of articles from April 2014 to February 2021. Worldwide, 80 articles were realized in the Northern Hemisphere and thirteen in the Southern Hemisphere. The samplings of organisms were carried out in 36 countries, besides one in Antarctica. The concentration of microplastics were studied in 70 species, with mussels Mytilus spp. and the oysters Crassostrea spp. being the main genus studied. Due to the different methodologies used to digest the tissues of organisms and identify microplastics and species, it is difficult to make comparisons between the results of different studies. In addition, data on the concentrations of microplastics in the environment, as well as their composition and characteristics, are needed, enabling the verification of relationships with the concentrations identified in organisms, which does not occur in most studies. Thus, we suggest an increase in the number of studies to be realized in the southern hemisphere, future studies use the same methodology of digestion, the polymer identification of microplastics and samplings of the surrounding environment, enabling a greater comparison between studies.

Despite there being numerous models of trihalomethane (THM) formation, they are limited by high estimation errors, which can be close to the regulatory limits for THMs, due to the fluorescence quenching effect. In this research, the estimation error for THM formation was reduced by correcting the quenching effect. The trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) test was conducted in the presence of chlorine and bromine, individually and in mixtures. The THM precursors used in this study were protein (bovine serum albumin; BSA), amino acids (tryptophan and tyrosine), chlorine, bromine, and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SWNOM). BSA tended to form bromodichloromethane (BDCM) rather than trichloromethane (TCM) during chlorination in the presence of bromide (Br-). In contrast, SWNOM tended to form chlorinated THMs (TCM) rather than brominated THMs (BDCM and dibromochloromethane; DBCM), and no TBMs were formed in these processes. BSA with SWNOM decreased the formation of TCM due to the decrease in the amount of TCM precursor in SWNOM through binding with BSA. The concentration of each THM species was predicted from the fluorescence intensity of peak C, corrected fluorescence intensity of peak T, and Br- concentration. The use of humic-like and corrected protein-like fluorescence in the excitation-emission matrix model for predicting THM species reduced the prediction error. In this research, correction of the fluorescence quenching decreased the mean percentage estimation error for TCM, BDCM, and DBCM from 47%, 35%, and > 100% in classical approaches to 6.6%, 26.9%, and 2.0%, respectively. This study is expected to make contributions in reporting the relationship between the concentration of natural organic matter compositions and the formation of THM species.

Deposition of atmospheric pollution as particulate matter (PM) has become a serious issue in many urban areas. This study measured and estimated the amount of atmospheric PM deposition onto oriental plane (Platanus orientalis L.) trees located in Tehran Megapolis, Iran. PM deposited on the leaves of urban trees during spring and summer was estimated using leaf wash measurements. In addition to direct measurements, the dry deposition velocity and the yearly whole-tree PM deposition were estimated using both field measurements and a theoretical model of deposition flux. We estimated air quality improvement as a result of the trees at respiratory height (1.5 m), tree height (10 m), and boundary layer height (1719 m). Foliar PM deposition during spring and summer was estimated to average 0.05 g/leaf and 41.39 g/tree using direct measurements. The annual PM deposited on the leaves, trunk, and branches of an average urban tree was calculated to be 78.60 g/tree. Trees were estimated to improve air quality at 1.5 m, 10 m, and 1719 m from ground level by 25.8%, 5.8%, and 0.1%, respectively. Hence, oriental plane trees substantially reduce PM at respiratory height.

The purpose of this study is to assess metal concentrations and their bioavailability, and relate them to concentrations in fish tissues (gill, muscle and skin) as part of the ecotoxicological and public health assessment of the St Lucia system. Eight metals from six sites (Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) and five metals (Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn) from 60 fish, Oreochromis mossambicus, were analysed. Dissolved metal concentrations were highest in the north lake and lowest at the estuary. Sediment metal concentrations were highest in the north lake and lowest in the south lake. The plant response to elevated ozone stress reveals inter-species and intra-species disparity. Ozone-induced crop yield loss is predicted to increase in the future, posing a threat to the world economy. This study aims to evaluate the cultivar specific variation in rice exposed to elevated ozone. Fifteen short-duration rice cultivars were exposed to 50 ppb ozone for 30 days at reproductive stage. The physiological, biochemical, growth and yield traits of all test cultivars were significantly affected in response to elevated ozone. On an average, ozone stress decreased the tiller number by 22.52%, number of effective tillers by 30.43%, 1000 grain weight by 0.62% and straw weight by 23.83% over control. Spikelet sterility increased by 19.26% and linear multiregression 3D model significantly fits the spikelet sterility and photosynthetic traits with the R2 of 0.74 under elevated ozone. Principal Component Analysis with total variance of 57.5% categorized 15 rice cultivars into four major groups, i.e., ozone sensitive (MDU6, TRY(R)2 and ASD16), moderately ozone sensitive (ASD18, ADT43, and MDU5), moderately ozone tolerant (ADT37, ADT(R)45, TPS5, Anna(R)4, PMK(R)3, and ADT(R)48), and ozone tolerant (CO51, CO47, and ADT36). This study indicates that the different responses of rice cultivars to elevated ozone stress through a change in plant physiology, biochemical, growth, and yield traits and the results directed to provide scientific information on plant adaptations to ozone stress and helps in efforts to search ozone tolerant gene for plant breeding.

Quercus is one of the important elements of forests worldwide. But the diagnosis of the species in this genus in particular using leaves is pretty challenging due to the presence of natural hybrids and phenotypically plastic trait expression. In this sense, this study aims to classify the leaves of Q. vulcanica and Q. frainetto using convolutional neural networks, VGG16 and VGG19, and Xception deep learning architectures to determine which method has the best performance in species assignment. For this purpose, leaf samples were collected from a total of 300 trees of 6 natural populations using a total of 1459 leaf images, 491 from Q. frainetto and 968 from Q. vulcanica. Before exporting images to the deep learning model, RGB/gray filters are applied and images are optimized with contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization to achieve maximum performance in the deep learning model. Accuracy rates of deep learning architectures varied from 79% (Xception) to 95% (VGG16). The VGG16 deep learning model provided superior performance compared to the others. Developing a mobile device using images from natural populations of many oak species will be beneficial not only for practitioners but also for scientists and local people.

Nitrogen and sulfur emissions from oil sands operations in northern Alberta, Canada have resulted in increasing deposition of N and S to the region’s ecosystems. To assess whether a changing N and S deposition regime affects bog porewater chemistry, we sampled bog porewater at sites at different distances from the oil sands industrial center from 2009 to 2012 (10-cm intervals to a depth of 1 m) and from 2009 to 2019 (top of the bog water table only). We hypothesized that: (1) as atmospheric N and S deposition increases with increasing proximity to the oil sands industrial center, surface porewater concentrations of NH4+, NO3−, DON, and SO42− would increase and (2) with increasing N and S deposition, elevated porewater concentrations of NH4+, NO3−, DON, and SO42− would be manifested increasingly deeper into the peat profile. We found weak evidence that oil sands N and S emissions affect bog porewater NH4+-N, NO3−-N, or DON concentrations. We found mixed evidence that increasing SO42− deposition results in increasing porewater SO42− concentrations. Current SO42− deposition, especially at bogs closest to the oil sands industrial center, likely exceeds the ability of the Sphagnum moss layer to retain S through net primary production, such that atmospherically deposited SO42− infiltrates downward into the peat column. Increasing porewater SO42− availability may stimulate dissimilatory sulfate reduction and/or inhibit CH4 production, potentially affecting carbon cycling and gaseous fluxes in these bogs.

Plant species exhibiting heavy metal tolerance are instrumental in phytoremediation of metalliferous sites. Most of the time, variations in plant functional traits (PFTs) are overlooked while identifying hyperaccumulators. However, investigating morphological, physiological, and phenological variations can contribute to our knowledge about stress tolerance, and aid in identifying potential hyperaccumulators. In the present study, we investigated variation in morpho-functional traits in Solanum nigrum, a known hyperaccumulator, under lead (Pb) stress. Twenty-one PFTs including 9 above-ground (leaf count, leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, leaf thickness, leaf dry mass, shoot length, stem dry mass, stem diameter), 3 below-ground (root length, root dry mass, and root diameter), 4 reproductive (flower bud count, fruit count, flower count, and fruit dry mass), and 5 photosynthetic traits (total chlorophyll, total carotenoid, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and photosynthetic efficiency) under varying Pb concentrations (500–2000 mg kg−1) were assessed. Pillai’s trace test (MANOVA) depicted significant variations in above-ground, below-ground, and photosynthetic traits, whereas reproductive traits did not vary significantly with progressive metal concentration. However, most of the studied traits except flower count, fruit dry mass, and chlorophyll b varied significantly under Pb stress. The study depicts that enhanced PFT’s plasticity enables S. nigrum to grow in Pb-contaminated soil effectively without impacting plant fitness. Plasticity of morpho-functional traits, therefore, establishes itself as a resourceful approach in successful identification of phytoremediation capacity of a plant.

Dumped munitions contain various harmful substances which can affect marine biota like fish. One of them is mercury (Hg), included in the common explosive primer Hg fulminate. There is still a lack of knowledge whether dumped munitions impact the Hg concentrations in the Baltic Sea environment. This study aims to answer the question if dab caught at the dump site Kolberger Heide show higher Hg concentrations released from munition sources and whether Hg in fish is a usable marker for munition exposure. Therefore, a total of 251 individual dab (Limanda limanda) were analysed including 99 fish from the dump site. In fish from the Kolberger Heide, no elevated Hg concentrations were found compared to reference sites when age-dependent bioaccumulation of mercury was considered. Therefore we conclude that Hg in fish is no suitable indicator for exposure to munition dumping, e.g. in the frame of possible future monitoring studies as Hg exposure originating from dumped munition is only a small contributor to overall Hg exposure of fish.

The presence of Hg, Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Zn in clam (Meretrix lyrata) from the East Java Coast (EJC), Indonesia, is reported in this study. Metal levels in clam whole tissues were Zn > Cu > Cr > Pb > Cd > Hg. Cr, Cd, and Pb levels in clam tissue surpassed the tolerated limit for eating and the provisional acceptable weekly intake (PTWI) at numerous places along the EJC. The target hazard quotients (THQs) for Cr, Cd, and Pb were greater than one in several locations, indicating that these metals could be harmful to consumers (particularly non-carcinogenic impacts). Eating clams from this area may be detrimental to human health. Furthermore, target cancer risk (TCR) values for Cr and Cd were greater than 10-4 in several locations, implying that Cr and Cd could cause cancer in people over the course of a lifetime of exposure.

There are no results of comparative ecological studies of the radionuclide activity concentration in the plants and soil in relation to geological substrate. Presented research encompasses the comparative analysis of the concentration of four radionuclides, three natural (40K, 226Ra, 232Th) and one artificial (137Cs) in soil samples and aerial plant parts of Teucrium montanum from different natural habitats on serpentinite and calcareous geological substrate. The activity concentrations of radionuclides were measured with high purity germanium (HPGe) detector and expressed as Bq kg-1. The calculated activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra, 232Th, and 137Cs in soil samples from serpentinite/calcareous habitats are in range 39.6-91.0/59.3-1018.8, 1.7-5.5/4.3-52.4, 2.4-10.9/5.9-72.9, and 57.2-844.9/29.6-701.5 Bq kg-1, respectively. The activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra, 232Th, and 137Cs in plant samples are in range 152.9-445.9/228.0-521.4, n.d.-1.2/0.6-5.6, n.d./0.2-0.9, and 1.0-46.4/1.7-7.0 Bq kg-1, respectively. The obtained results showed that the quantities of 137Cs are greater in the soil and plant material from the serpentinite habitats, while quantities of 40K, 226Ra, and 232Th are greater in the soil and plant material from calcareous habitats. In general, the level of radioactivity in plants and soil depends on the type of the geological substrate. The content of radionuclides in plants is correlated with the radionuclide content in the soil. In addition to other specifics in physical and chemical properties, serpentinite habitats are characterized by an increased amount of Cs in the soil, which causes an increased amount of this radionuclide in plants such as Teucrium montanum.

In the past three decades, macroinvertebrate traits have been explored and employed in the biomonitoring of riverine systems globally, but much attention has not been given to the trait-based approach (TBA) in Nigeria. Therefore, in this study, the distribution patterns of macroinvertebrate traits in selected stations exposed to varying degrees of perturbation in River Hadejia, north-western Nigeria, were explored to assess the ecological health of the river. Three stations were selected, representing an increasing gradient of pollution: station 1 > station 2 and station 3, and were used to search for potential indicator traits. Four traits, including body size, respiratory, mobility, and body shape, were selected and classified into 12 trait attributes. The RLQ analysis revealed macroinvertebrates possessing medium and large body sizes, climbing and crawling, tegumental, gills, and aerial: lungs respiratory traits, and streamlined body shape were associated with station 1. Conversely, macroinvertebrates possessing very small and small body sizes, aerial: spiracle and aerial/vegetation, sprawling, swimming, and skating, flattened, spherical, cylindrical, and rhomboidal were mainly associated with stations 2 and 3. In searching for potential indicator macroinvertebrate traits aside from the RLQ analysis conducted, a fourth-corner analysis was further performed, which showed traits including medium and large body sizes, tegumental, and aerial: lung respiratory traits to be sensitive to pollution. Equally, aerial/vegetation, flattened body shape, and very small body size were found to be tolerant of pollution. A more robust trait-based biomonitoring study using more trait classes such as feeding mechanism, food preferences, voltinism, and attachment mechanism is recommended for future study in this region. The study would be helpful in biomonitoring of ecosystem health and enhance the sustainability prowess of the TBA in the studied region.

The Coeur d’Alene Lake basin in Northwestern USA has extensive contamination from legacy mining waste, which overlaps with aquatic macrophyte habitat. We examined concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in three macrophytes: Elodea canadensis (submerged), Myriophyllum spicatum (submerged), and Sagittaria latifolia (emergent). We collected macrophyte tissues from five contaminated sites and one uncontaminated site. Tissue concentrations were compared to sediment quality guidelines to assess potential toxicity from metal(loid)s to macrophyte-associated biota. We used threshold and probable effect concentrations to screen for potential toxicity. For the submerged species, the highest site means ± SD (analyte mg/kg dry mass) were 96 ± 61 (As), 18 ± 1.7 (Cd), 24 ± 15 (Cu), 610 ± 392 (Pb), and 1425 ± 222 (Zn). For contaminated sites, the probable effect threshold was exceeded in 38% (As), 45% (Cd), 0% (Cu), 74% (Pb), and 67% (Zn) of submerged species concentrations. Metal concentrations in S. latifolia tubers were lower than the submerged species leaves and shoots. Tuber concentrations did not exceed the probable effect threshold for any metal. Spatial differences in concentrations were most distinct for the submerged species. Our work shows significant amounts of metals are accumulating in some macrophytes of the study area and that biota associated with this vegetation may experience toxicity based upon guideline exceedances. Additionally, managers of invasive plants (e.g., M. spicatum) should consider the ramifications of control efforts given the high metal content of some plants (e.g., disposal issue).

The rapidly changing marine environmental chemistry associated with growing industrialisation, urban population expansion, and the unabated rise in atmospheric CO2 necessitates monitoring. Traditional approaches using metres, dataloggers, and buoys to monitor marine acidification have limited application in coastal oceans and intertidal zones subjected to direct wave action. The present study trialled a system to biomonitor coastal acidification (carbonate ion and pH) based on the dissolution of living gastropod shells. We extended on an approach that ranked shell erosion (SER) in Nerita chamaeleon (Nc) in environments where such erosion was found to correlate with exposure to acidified water. We assessed the spatial scale at which the Nc-SER marker could detect change in acidification along rocky shores, and whether snail body size affected this marker. We found that proportional and unique Nc-SERs not only varied between acidified and non-acidified reference shores at a coarse spatial scale (10 km), but also in predictable ways at fine scales (metres), vertically and horizontally within a shore. Differences between acidified and reference shores in the relationship for snail size and Nc-SER were accentuated by less weathered shells at reference localities, highlighting the value of including small, juvenile snails in monitoring protocols. Gastropod shells are shown to be useful for assessing point sources of acidification and the spatial area of affected coastal zones. This cost-effective and easy-to-use approach (potentially even by citizen-scientists) offers an early warning system of acidification of rocky shore ecosystems, where the deployment of instruments is precluded.

The high concentration of metal toxicants in aquatic ecosystems has a detrimental impact on fish health that ultimately jeopardizes human health. Such threats mostly arise in mineral-rich areas where an increase in metal concentrations occurs in aquatic bodies due to anthropogenic activities like mining. The present study assessed the health of food fish Channa punctata from the mineral-rich areas of Ganjam, Odisha, India, mined for heavy and transition metal ores like ilmenite, zircon, monazite. The fishes collected from these areas showed histopathological anomalies in vital organs like the liver, kidney, gills, stomach and intestine while cytological analysis revealed vacuolated cytoplasm and micronuclei. Biochemical analysis showed a significantly lower lipid concentration in muscle (i.e., 0.177 ± 0.177 mg/gm) and liver (i.e., 0.169 ± 0.002 mg/gm) as compared to non-exposed fishes from adjoining non-mineral rich areas having a mean protein concentration of 87.48 ± 8.16 and 77.75 ± 0.892 mg/gm tissue in the muscle and liver, respectively, and a mean lipid concentration of 0.29 ± 0.009 mg/gm muscle and 0.34 ± 0.009 mg/gm liver. Chronic exposure to sublethal concentrations of zirconium oxychloride, a salt of zirconium, resulted in a significant decline in the concentration of protein, ranging from 57.5 ± 0.929 - 63.88 ± 1.95 mg/gm in muscle and 45.35 ± 2.332 - 51.98 ± 1.036 mg/gm in the liver. The lipid concentrations in muscle (0.03 ± 0.009 - 0.17 ± 0.009 mg/gm) and liver (0.06 ± 0.012 - 0.19 ± 0.007 mg/gm) were also significantly lower than the non-exposed fishes. Marked degenerative changes were identified in the histological sections of the gill, intestine, stomach, liver and kidney of zirconium oxychloride-treated fishes along with various nuclear deformities and micronucleus.

The current study aimed to assess meat quality of samples of Nile tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus), along with examining organochlorine pesticide (OCP) residues in these samples and their potential risks to humans. About 55 samples were collected from eleven sites on the Nile River in Egypt: Damietta, El-Behera, El-Dakahlia, Kafrelsheikh, El-Gharbia, El-Menoufia, Cairo, El-Giza, El-Fayoum, El-Menia, and Aswan Governorates. Fish samples were analyzed fresh and grilled for meat quality characteristics and the presence of OCP residues using the QuEChERS method for extraction and cleanup accompanied by detection using GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) system. Then, risk hazards of OCP residues were calculated. Results showed that all quality criteria of raw and cooked meat samples were within the permissible levels set by the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS). The detected residues of OCPs in fresh samples were hexachlorocyclohexanes (α-HCH, β-HCH, and δ-HCH), heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin aldehyde, endosulfan, and p,p'-DDE. Endrin aldehyde was detected in all tested sites, while heptachlor epoxide was found in eight (73%) out of the 11 tested locations. After grilling, aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, endosulfan, and endrin aldehyde compounds were found in fish meat. Cooking fish samples reduced the OCP residue amounts by at least 95% of detected amounts in fresh meat.

Seaweed exploitation in mainland India was started in early 1970s for various applications. The checklist of seaweeds of mainland India was well documented during 2001. However, rich marine macroalgal diversity found in island ecosystems of Andaman and Nicobar Islands have not been explored until today due to inaccessibility to most remote and protected islands. Based on the literature available from 1965 to 2020, this study garnered a detailed checklist of seaweeds of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with recent nomenclature. A total of 244 species under 100 genera are being reported herein, of which red algae showed the highest species diversity of 107 species under 58 genera, followed by 79 species of green algae under 23 genera and 58 species of brown algae under 19 genera. Recent studies revealed that Andaman and Nicobar Islands are rich in seaweeds diversity, and the species composition available in these islands is slightly different from mainland Indian coastal waters. Since the Andaman group of islands is located close to Thailand and other Asian countries, Andaman seaweed species diversity appears to resemble the seaweed species of the West coast of Thailand and other Asian countries. This checklist would serve as valuable baseline data for those who wish to pursue research on seaweed conservation, germplasm banking, and molecular taxonomy aspects as well as sustainable utilization of seaweeds for commercial cultivation, food, drug, and other value-added applications.

Zooplankton is widely recognized as a key component of pelagic ecosystems and forms the basis for major trophic webs. Although zooplankton has often been used as an indicator of trophic state, it has not been included as an obligatory element of the water assessment systems compliant with the Water Framework Directive. This article introduces the Zooplankton Index for Polish Lakes’ Assessment (ZIPLAS) as a new method to assess the ecological status of stratified lakes based on the zooplankton community. The ZIPLAS evaluates three aspects of zooplankton communities, namely, taxonomic composition and abundance, diversity of the zooplankton community, and stressor-sensitive species, which are combined into a multimetric index. Following are the metrics used to compose multimetric ZIPLAS: percentage share of the Rotifer species indicative of high trophy in the indicative group’s number (IHTROT; %), ratio of Calanoida to Cyclopoida individual numbers (CA/CY), percentage of tecta form in the population of Keratella cochlearis (TECTA; %), Margalef’s index (d), and zooplankton abundance (NZOL; ind./L). ZIPLAS responds clearly to eutrophication indicators—the strongest with Secchi disc visibility (Spearman’s rank correlation R = 0.86) and slightly weaker with the expressed by total phosphorus (R = -0.74), total nitrogen (R = 0.68) and the catchment pressure expressed by the nutrient loads generated by different types of land use (R = -0.58).

The use of fast-growing tree species, such as Casuarina glauca for wastewater treatment could improve the quality of wastewater and offer an ecological and sustainable system. A hydroponically experiment was conducted to evaluate C. glauca ability to remove heavy metals from secondary treated urban wastewater (SWW). The effect of the SWW on plant biomass, some physiological parameters, heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni and Zn) bioaccumulation and removal from wastewater was evaluated. After 28 days, wastewater treatment C. glauca showed high efficiency for the removal of pathogenic bacteria such as faecal coliforms and faecal streptococci from SWW. A significant reduction was found for electrical conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand and suspended solids with 31%, 92%, 83% and 31% respectively. Casuarina glauca plants were able to remove heavy metal ions Cd, Pb, Ni and Zn from SWW and the removal efficiency was 92%, 77%, 83% and 73%, respectively. Casuarina glauca plants accumulated concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni and Zn) in their roots higher than the shoots. SWW had a remarkable effect on plant growth and photosynthetic capacity in C. glauca compared with plants grown in tap water (control). The results indicated that C. glauca can act as scavengers of heavy metal ions from polluted water and confirms their ability for wastewater treatment.

The increasing use of gibberellic acid (GA3) to promote fruit growth and yield has necessitated research into its trace level determination and estimation in harvested product. The phytohormone has increased the tomato yield (tonne ha−1) up to 24.7% with uniform fruit shape, size colour and lustre. A fast, simple, high-throughput analytical method was standardised based on electrospray ionisation — liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). The samples were extracted using acidified (1% formic acid) methanol. The method was validated as per the SANTE/12682/2019 guidelines. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.01 and 0.05 mg kg−1. The average recoveries at LOQ and higher levels were in the range of 86–108% with relative standard deviation (RSD)

With the aim to recommend an integrated alternative for the combined treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMW) and cotton residues (CR), and the production of high value and environmentally friendly products, two compost piles were set up. The first pile (control, pile 1) consisted of ginned CR, whereas the second (pile 2) was made of CR with the addition of OMW. A series of physicochemical parameters and the culturable microbial diversity in both piles were assessed. Co-composting (pile 2) displayed higher temperatures during the whole process, a prolonged second thermophilic phase and temperature values higher than 40 °C even after the thermophilic stage. Comparing the physicochemical parameters of the pile 2 with those of the pile 1, it was deduced that pH in the former was more acidic during the onset of the process; the EC values were higher throughout the process, while the levels of ammonium and nitrate nitrogen, as well as the NH4+/NO3− ratios, were lower at most of the sampling dates. By evaluating the abovementioned results, it was estimated that the co-composting process headed sooner toward stability and maturity, Isolated microorganisms from both piles were identified as members of the genera Brevibacillus, Serratia, Klebsiella, and Aspergillus, whereas active thermotolerant diazotrophs were detected in both piles at the 2nd thermophilic phase emerging a promising prospect upon further evaluation for enhancing the end-product quality. Our findings indicate that co-composting is an interesting approach for the exploitation of large quantities of agro-industrial residues with a final product suitable for improving soil fertility and health.

Some wetlands in the northern Great Plains support hundreds to thousands of late-stage tadpoles providing important sources of recruitment to the Wood Frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) population while many other wetlands produce none. Relationships between water quality and late-stage tadpole abundance were determined to identify the water quality parameters associated with tadpole abundance. Water samples were collected, and late-stage tadpole abundances were assessed once each year in late June for 12 years in 26 wetlands. Catch or abundance was the number of tadpoles captured in 30 min with a dip-net. The catch of tadpoles was variable both among wetlands and over the long-term for individual wetlands, and ranged from 0 to several hundred individuals. Wood Frog tadpoles were especially sensitive to sodium and chloride concentrations. At Cl concentrations less than 5 mg/L, occupancy for late-stage tadpoles was 84%, and declined by about 8% for each 5 mg/L increase in Cl to 40.1 mg/L Cl, the maximum concentration associated with the detection of tadpoles. Optimal water quality for late-stage Wood Frog tadpoles included low concentrations of Na $$(\overline{x }$$ = 8.1 mg/L), and Cl $$(\overline{x }$$ = 4.2 mg/L) relative to total dissolved solids and other ions, and high concentrations of phosphorus. In a landscape where ion concentrations in wetlands can range over 3 orders of magnitude, water quality analyses suggest that abundant Wood Frog tadpole populations occur in wetlands dominated by snow-melt runoff with its characteristic low ion concentrations. The present study highlights the importance to amphibian conservation of the water quality environment of tadpole habitat.

Soil carbon dioxide emission is a major component of ecosystem respiration, responsible for organic carbon losses from the ecosystem. In Pinus roxburghii Sarg. plantations, higher CO2 emission coincided with maximum soil moisture and soil temperature during the rainy season (4.23 µmol CO2m-2 s-1) followed by summer season (1.69 µmol CO2m-2 s-1) and winter season (1.35 µmol CO2m-2 s-1). The soil CO2 emission rates recorded during the rainy season differed significantly from other seasons (p 0.05). Higher annual average carbon stock, 95.05 t ha-1 in P. roxburghii plantations than the yearly soil CO2 emission, 33.23 t ha-1 indicates that plantations sequester more carbon than the emissions.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the parasitological and bacteriological qualities of the soil and water of the Oued Larbaâ, through nine stations covering the part of the Oued crossing the Taza city of Morocco (7 km of length). This study was conducted during two dry periods (2017 and 2018) and one wet period (2018). Soil parasitological studies revealed high contamination by helminths belonging to the species Enterobius vermicularis and Toxocara sp., which recorded the highest concentrations in stations S2 and S8, respectively, with values of 11.41 and 29.26 eggs/g. Concerning water, the majority of stations indicated contamination mainly by Ascaris lumbricoides, which reached concentrations of 56.49, 37.39, and 56.15 eggs/l in stations S3, S6, and S8, respectively. Bacteriological examination of the soil showed very high concentrations of bacteria, especially Streptococcus, due to the high retention of this type of bacteria in the soil. The water analysis indicated that stations S3, S4, and S8 are the most impacted, with total coliform and Streptococcus concentrations in station S3 of 2.45 105 and 0.20 107 CFU/ml, respectively, Fecal coliforms and Staphylococci are detected in high concentrations in station S8 with values of 1.35 104 and 8.92 106 CFU/ml, respectively, and total aerobic mesophilic flora in station S4 with a concentration of 1.89 109 CFU/ml. During the study periods, influences of sampling season, nature of discharge existed (wastewater or leachate) on the parasitological and bacteriological composition of the river were established with high concentrations during the dry period and in the stations in which large amounts of liquid discharge were observed.

Potential toxic metals from natural and anthropogenic sources accumulate in soil and plants, and represent important environmental contamination challenges. The ecological and human health risks of the potential toxic metals in rice grain, paddy soil, and rice plants of Omor rice field were assessed. The total metal concentration from the four sampling sections (mg/kg) were soil—Zn (29.51 ± 2.23), Mn (55.27 ± 8.10), Cd (5.49 ± 2.24), Cu (2.94 ± 1.47), Pb (14.35 ± 6.54), and Cr (27.06 ± 8.31); rice grain—Zn (21.70 ± 5.44), Mn (3.30 ± 0.21), Cd (00.14 ± 0.11), Cu (2.80 ± 0.34), Pb (11.98 ± 0.58), and Cr (15.86 ± 2.79); and for rice plant—Zn (5.24 ± 1.93), Mn (4.68 ± 1.91), Cd (0.21 ± 0.11), Cu (4.88 ± 0.61), Pb (15.24 ± 6.16), and Cr (46.5 ± 6.05). The estimated daily intakes for adult showed that Cd and Pb exceeded the safe limit by 1% and 93%, respectively. The metal hazard quotients (Zn-0.0007, Mn-0.00019, Cd-0.16, Cu-0.19, and Cr-0.0000077) were less than 1 indicating no probable health risk originating from their exposure. Remote sensing-based observation provides an opportunity to study the spatiotemporal variations of plant phenology across the landscapes. This study aims to examine the phenological variations of different types of sal (Shorea robusta) forests in India and also to explore the relationship between phenology metrics and climatic parameters. Sal, one of the main timber-producing species of India, can be categorized into dry, moist, and very moist sal. The phenological metrics of different types of sal forests were extracted from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) time series data (2002–2015). During the study period, the average start of season (SOS) was found to be 16 May, 17 July, and 29 June for very moist, moist, and dry sal forests, respectively. The spatial distribution of mean SOS was mapped as well as the impact of climatic variables (temperature and rainfall) on SOS was investigated during the study period. In relation to the rainfall, values of the coefficient of determination (R2) for very moist, moist, and dry sal forests were 0.69, 0.68, and 0.76, respectively. However, with temperature, R2 values were found higher (R2 = 0.97, 0.81, and 0.97 for very moist, moist, and dry sal, respectively). The present study concluded that MODIS EVI is well capable of capturing the phenological metrics of different types of sal forests across different biogeographic provinces of India. SOS and length of season (LOS) were found to be the key phenology metrics to distinguish the different types of sal forests in India and temperature has a greater influence on SOS than rainfall in sal forests of India.

Rehabilitation of degraded lands due to mining and other activities requires rebuilding of the appropriate soil structure and microbial integrity. Organic wastes, in particular plant-based materials, play a vital role in restoration of degraded land when used as amendments for topsoil integrated with microbe-assisted phytoremediation. In this present study, a biotechnological approach using the combination of organic waste amendments, i.e., ETP (effluent treatment plant), sludge from sugarcane and paper industry, and the press mud respectively along with microbial and fungal inoculum isolated from the soil rhizosphere have been applied to study the influence on fertility and productivity of mine spoil from manganese and coal dumps. The organic amendments applied as 100-ton ha−1 and application of biofertilizers boosted the survival of plants such as Tectona grandis (Teak), Dalbergia sisso (North Indian rosewood), Phyllanthus emblica (Indian gooseberry), Gmelina arborea (Gamhar), and Acacia auriculiformis (Earpod wattle) from 80 to 100% with robust growth and development during the short span of 25 years. The physicochemical attributes of soil and the microbial count also increased significantly. The pH of mine soil dumps slightly shifted toward alkaline conditions (7.4 to 7.8) whereas bulk density, porosity, and the water holding capacity were greatly improved. Other than this, the nutrient status of mine dump soil and the plants such as available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and the organic carbon content in soil were improvised to a greater extent simultaneously decreasing the available manganese concentration. The findings of the study assure a better land reclamation and restoration approach.

Health of birds and heavy metal toxicity are growing concerns in Pakistan because of irresponsible industrial waste management and farming practices. Eight species of common wild birds were studied from three different study sites which varied in the type of environmental pollution (Kasur: industrial waste, Lahore city: traffic pollution and Shahdara: mixed pollution of traffic, sewerage, and industry which the Ravi River accumulates). Heavy metal analysis of six heavy metals in the various organs of birds showed that there was no evidence of organ preference for metal accumulation in birds. Shahdara and Kasur with numerous industries both showed chromium concentrations above toxicity levels in 54.16% tissues of Granivorous birds, 60% of omnivorous birds, and 33.33% in tissues of carnivorous species. Statistical analysis proved that there is no correlation between weight of birds and accumulation of metals; it depends on food preference of birds and properties of the metals as bioaccumulators or biomagnifiers.

Microalgae are rich source of protein containing necessary amino acids at different levels. The present study was designed to assess stimulatory and/or inhibitory impact of five different concentrations (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 mg/L) of three essential heavy metals (nickel, zinc, and copper) on protein content (soluble, insoluble, and total) of the marine unicellular green alga Dunaliella tertiolecta. Further, geospatial analyses were used to assess the suitability of Qaroun Lake for D. tertiolecta proliferation. The experimental results showed a gradual increase in protein content of D. tertiolecta with low concentrations of the three investigated heavy metals. However, increasing levels of heavy metals led to inhibitory effect on protein synthesis in alga with different grades. Ni, Zn and Cu levels in Qaroun lake were found suitable for the proliferation of Dunaliella (Lower than 5 mg/L). The present study highly recommends the necessity to encourage site selection of optimal marine environments suitable for the proliferation of marine algae rich in protein content.

Sugar mill pressmud is highly considered and used as a supplement to improve soil fertility and crop yield, especially in India. This study investigated the growth and yield performance of cultivated cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) on sugar mill pressmud amended soil. Pot experiments were performed using various pressmud amendment rates (0, 50, 100, and 150 g/kg soil) to study the fertilization impact on cabbage inflorescence yield (g) and size (diameter: cm). Moreover, mineral element (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) accumulation in the cabbage inflorescence was also studied using a modified polynomial non-linear model. Results showed that the sugar mill pressmud had significantly (p Mn > Zn > Cu > Cr > Zn. Furthermore, the developed modified polynomial quadratic model precisely predicted the total mineral element uptake (mg dwt.) by cabbage inflorescence. The models had good fitness as described by the coefficient of determination (R2 > 0.992) values. This study suggested that sugar mill pressmud was a promising resource for cabbage cultivation, and the developed models were helpful in the precise prediction of mineral elements accumulated by its inflorescence.

Pyrodinium bahamense, a harmful alga which causes paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), has been found in seawater samples collected along bays in Eastern Visayas in the Philippines. Due to its negative impacts and uncertainty in its occurrence, there is a need to develop a real-time monitoring device of the harmful algal bloom (HAB) occurrence. This study aims to determine whether there is significant relationship between the dependent variable, the P. bahamense cell density, and the independent variables, namely, temperature, rainfall and humidity, bays in Eastern Visayas, and sampling month. This was done through data mining technique of P. bahamense cell density and weather patterns and statistically analyzing the datasets, with P. bahamense cell density as the dependent variable and weather patterns, bays and sampling month as independent variables using M5P regression analysis. Through the regression analysis, the usefulness of the predictive model as an initial development can be assessed. Results of the study showed that the correlation coefficient of P. bahamense with the five independent variables is 0.725 which signified a moderate correlation between P. bahamense cell density and bay, sampling month, temperature, rainfall and humidity. Maximum cell density, which was 20 cells/L occurred during months of wet season in the bays in Eastern Visayas, except in Cancabato bay while the minimum cell density, which was 0 cell/L occurred during months of dry season. It can be concluded from the results that there is enough data to say that there is a significant relationship between P. bahamense occurrence and temperature, rainfall and humidity, so the model is meaningful and useful at alpha = 0.05 or 95% and 0.01 or 99% confidence interval. The data can be used to generate a predictive model for P. bahamense occurrence relative to its cell density.

In fish consumption advisories pertaining to Hg, grouper species in the family Serranidae are often lumped together and labeled generically as Grouper. However, grouper species vary considerably in growth rate, maximum age, and maximum size. This study examined the variability of Hg concentrations and bioaccumulation rates (increase of Hg concentrations in relation to age) for populations of three long-lived, slow-growing, protogynous hermaphrodite grouper species, gag Mycteroperca microlepis, scamp M. phenax, and red grouper Epinephelus morio, which are commercially and recreationally important in the offshore waters of the US southeastern region. A total of 268 samples from the three grouper species were processed for Hg analysis from 2013–2015. Concentrations of Hg ranged from 0.03 to 0.87 ppm wet weight, with a mean of 0.30 ppm. Gag accumulated Hg at a faster rate (as measured by the increase of Hg with fish age) than the other two species. Size, age, and δ15N were significant predictors for Hg in the two Mycteroperca species, while size and age were significant predictors for Hg in red grouper. Two of the three species had mean Hg concentrations within the one meal per week “Good Choices” consumption category (red grouper and scamp), and one species (gag) had a mean Hg level within the two meals per week “Good Choices” consumption category as advised by the US EPA and US FDA. These results support the separation of grouper species in advisories.

Anuran species are threatened by a range of anthropogenically induced disturbances, highlighting the need for robust and reliable monitoring programs to detect trends in species occupancy. Anuran species experience not only differences in seasonal distributions of breeding activity, but also interannual variations in habitat occupancy which are dependent on stochastic environmental processes. Acoustic calling surveys are a widely used and reportedly reliable technique for detecting a range of anuran species in Southern Ontario. Short-term applications of this technique may be challenged to detect species which are temporarily absent from suitable habitats due to natural extirpation processes. In this paper, I analyzed anuran occupancy data from 67 long-term acoustic monitoring sites across Southern Ontario to determine the relationship between accumulated species occupancy and number of monitoring years. Data was taken from Birds Canada’s Marsh Monitoring Protocol database for amphibians and filtered to extract sites which were monitored for at least 8 years and recorded at least 4 anuran species. Species accumulation curves were created using EstimateS. Results suggest that there may be detectability issues for some species such as the pickerel frog, wood frog, and western chorus frog. Interannual detection rates and species accumulation curves point to the need for long-term (> 5 years) monitoring programs to reliably detect on average more than 90% of anuran species occupying a monitoring site. They also reflect well-documented reports of high species turnover in anuran metapopulations, suggesting that extirpation-recolonization processes are widespread and frequent. Monitoring programs should address this issue by lengthening monitoring programs, particularly those that aim to document changes to species occupancy before and after major habitat disturbances.

Cyanobacteria are important members of lake plankton, but they have the ability to form blooms and produce cyanotoxins and thus cause a number of adverse effects. Freshwater ecosystems around the world have been investigated for the distribution of cyanobacteria and their toxins and the effects they have on the ecosystems. Similar research was performed on the Fehérvárcsurgó reservoir in Hungary during 2018. Cyanobacteria were present and blooming, and the highest abundance was recorded in July (2,822,000 cells/mL). The species present were Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Microcystis flos-aquae, Microcystis wesenbergii, Cuspidothrix issatschenkoi, Dolichospermum flos-aquae, and Snowella litoralis. In July and September, the microcystin encoding gene mcyE and the saxitoxin encoding gene sxtG were amplified in the biomass samples. While a low concentration of microcystin-RR was found in one water sample from July, analyses of Abramis brama and Carassius gibelio caught from the reservoir did not show the presence of the investigated microcystins in the fish tissue. However, several histopathological changes, predominantly in gills and kidneys, were observed in the fish, and the damage was more severe during May and especially July, which coincides with the increase in cyanobacterial biomass during the summer months. Cyanobacteria may thus have adverse effects in this ecosystem.

The study focused on assessing drinking water quality from different sources in Gweru urban. Seventy six samples were collected from 6 different locations and analysed for physicochemical parameters and microbial quality. Bacteria isolates were identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry and antibiotic susceptibility was determined for 4 isolates that had been identified as Escherichia coli (2) and Salmonella spp. (2). Although most samples were within World Health Organisation limits for most parameters, none met coliform limits. pH ranged between 6.2 and 6.9. Salmonella prevalence was 2%. Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. isolates were resistant to at least three antibiotics. The study showed inconsistent water quality across the city and contamination in alternative water sources.

Birds are widely used as bioindicators in monitoring programs in wetlands. We compare concentrations of seven trace metals and metalloids (TMM) As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb, Znin both feathers and blood in two flamingo species in two high-altitude wetlands in Bolivia, with different levels of anthropogenic point source pollution. Lake Uru Uru (LUU) receives discharges from mining operations, and also effluents from the nearby city of Oruro, while Laguna Colorada (LCo) does not receive contaminants from anthropogenic sources. We sampled water and sediments at each site, as well as flamingos in three age classes in an effort to establish a benchmark for long-term monitoring. Metal concentrations in water did not differ between sites, whereas Zn and Pb concentrations of TMM in sediments were higher at LUU, and Hg higher at LCo. TMM concentrations were highly specific for all separate elements, but results point to differences between Andean flamingo (Phoenicoparrus andinus) chicks and the rest of the classes considered. As flamingo chicks did not molt before sampling, we pose that TMM concentrations in their blood and feathers may respond mainly to local conditions. Eggshells provide additional information, since adults transfer some TMM during egg development. Long-term monitoring in these species should include different age classes and sample both feathers and eggshells to monitor the environmental conditions and bioaccumulation of TMM in these species. Future studies should include sites devoid of natural sources of TMM to help distinguish sources of contamination, since some TMM (As and Pb) may be naturally in high concentrations in remote areas, like Laguna Colorada.

Canalization carried out during petroleum exploration is contributing to environmental changes in the Niger Delta. We carried out a study on five decades of canalization in Olero Creek, Benin River, from 1980 to 2020. The study site covered an area of 36.40 km2. Satellite imageries of five epochs (1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020) and Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) of 2000, which provided digital elevation models (DEMs) of the study area were collected and analyzed using ERDAS IMAGINE 9.2 and ArcGIS 10.6 software. We found that the total length of dredged canal increased from 14.14 km in 1980 to 61.07 km in 2020, spoil banks doubled from 2.05 km2 in 1980 to 4.13 km2 in 2020, and direct wetland loss doubled from 3.76 km2 in 1980 to 7.57 km2 in 2020, with the largest increase occurring between 1990 and 2000. The land use/land cover, topography, and hydrology of the area also changed. Water bodies that originally accounted for 1.17% of the study area in 1980, increased to 22% in 2020, Rhizophora racemosa fringing the waterbodies increased from 11% in 1980 to 47% in 2020, and Rhizophora mangle decreased from over 55% in 1980 to about 23% in 2020. The results of digital elevation model show that the surface area is undulating with the relative topography of the study site ranging from − 5 to 40 m. We conclude that canalization during petroleum exploration was contributing to land use, topographic, and hydrologic changes in the study area.

Leaves of trees experience the maximum brunt of exposure and undergo certain changes in physiological traits responding to air pollution, and then, the specific leaf traits can be the indicators of air pollution in an area. However, due to the diversity of sources, the composition of air pollutants is very complex. This makes it difficult to predict air pollution using physiological differentiation of leaves. The purpose of this investigation was to examine potential of Ligustrum lucidum Ait. leaf measurement as a method to predict the air pollutants in Luoyang, China. Leaves of roadside L. lucidum were studied from the city center with serious air pollution to relatively unpolluted areas. Leaf size, stomatal traits, and non-structural carbohydrate were measured. The particulate and gaseous pollutants (including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and ozone) were investigated too. The results showed that the leaf area and soluble sugar content decreased, while the aspect ratio of leaves increased in heavily polluted areas. As pollution increased, the stomatal traits in different crown positions were changed differently. No significant correlation was found between ozone content and the measured traits of leaves. The responses found in the physiological differentiation of the leaves reflect acclimation to air pollution. The soluble sugar content of the leaves could be used to indicate the short-term stress of air pollution, the area, and aspect ratio of leaves are indicative of the long-term stress due to air pollution. Therefore, physiological traits of L. lucidum leaves appeared to be significant predictive factors for the air pollutants in urban areas.

To date, studies for bioremediation of oil-polluted hypersaline soils have been neglected or limited to specific spots. Hence, in this study, ten samples of oil field soils in the Khuzestan province of Iran were collected to evaluate bioremediation's feasibility. These samples were analyzed for their physicochemical properties as well as the most probable number of total and hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria. Thirty-nine hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were isolated from these soils over a 1-month incubation in an MSM medium enriched with diesel oil as the sole source of carbon. As revealed by 16S-rRNA analysis, the identified strains belonged to the genera Ochrobactrum, Microbacterium, and Bacillus with a high frequency of Ochrobactrum species. Additionally, by using degenerate primers, the third group of alkB gene was detected in Ochrobactrum and Microbacterium isolates through the touchdown nested PCR method for the first time. Ochrobactrum species possessing the alkB gene showed the highest population, and therefore, the highest adaptation to harsh environmental conditions. Most isolates showed outstanding results in the ability to grow with crude and diesel oil and tolerate high salt percentages, biosurfactant production, and emulsification activity, which are considered the most effective factors in bioremediation of such environments. Considering the soil analysis, limiting factors in bioremediation like available phosphorous, and the abundance of bacteria with remediation traits in these soils, these extremely polluted environments can be refined.

The current study investigated the influence of exopolysaccharides (EPSs) producing plant growth–promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) on the growth, physiology, and soil properties. The pre-isolated and compatible EPS producing PGPR strains were first screened based on improvement in soil aggregates in an incubation study. The screened strains (Rhizobium phaseoli strain Mn-6, Pseudomonas bathysetes strain LB5, and unidentified strain R2) were then employed in pot study for assessing improvements in maize growth, physiology, and soil properties. Eight treatments including T1 = control, T2 = Mn-6, T3 = R2, T4 = LB5, T5 = Mn-6 + R2, T6 = Mn-6 + LB5, T7 = R2 + LB5, and T8 = Mn-6 + R2 + LB5 were applied in completely randomized design (CRD) hexa replicated (half for root and half for soil, and yield attributes). The results depicted that among various treatments, the application of PGPR strain Mn-6 increased plant height, root length, root fresh and dry weight, root length density, SPAD value, leaf areas index, photosynthesis rate, transpiration, and stomatal conductance by 24, 79, 72, 90, 49, 35, 23, 21, 75, and 77%, respectively, compared with non-inoculated treatment. Similarly, significant improvement in maize yield and soil physical properties was also observed in response to the application of EPS-producing PGPR. Therefore, it is concluded that the application of EPS producing PGPR is an effective strategy to improve plant growth, physiology, yield, and soil physical properties. Moreover, EPS-producing PGPR should be exploited in field studies for their potential in improving plant growth and soil properties.

Airborne fungi are among common contaminants in indoor and outdoor environments, leading to poor indoor air quality (IAQ), and to some extent, implicate health risks to humans worldwide. In Malaysia, fungal contamination in institutional buildings is rarely documented although these places are frequently visited by many. This study was conducted to assess the density and diversity of airborne fungi in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) main campus, Penang. A total of 11 sampling sites were assessed. Fungi were collected by using Andersen Single Stage Impact Air Sampler N-6 and MEA plates. Two separate trials, namely Trial 1 and Trial 2, were conducted in 2008 and 2019, respectively. The recovered fungi were identified up to the genus level–based morphological features. A survey involving 400 respondents among USM staff and students in relation to fungal contamination in indoor air environment was also conducted to evaluate the knowledge on indoor fungi among USM community. The densities of indoor air fungi in Trial 1 were higher; ranging from 81 to 1743 CFU/m3, exceeding the recommended level set by the Malaysia Industry Code of Practice (MCPIAQ) in some sampling sites, compared to that of in Trial 2 where the densities ranged from 229 to 699 CFU/m3. A total of 154 isolates and 230 isolates of airborne fungi were recovered in Trial 1 and Trial 2, respectively. In total, 11 fungal genera were identified in both trials, and three genera were predominant: Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Cladosporium. The survey also revealed that knowledge of IAQ among staff and students was limited and that they were unaware of fungal contamination and IAQ. A continuous and wide-spread awareness should be implemented at USM main campus for safer and healthier indoor air environments, particularly university students where productivity and efficiency are of the utmost importance.

Despite the general lack of studies that use reptiles as bioindicators, the value of freshwater turtles and crocodilians in ecotoxicology has been proven, due to their importance as sentinel species. The aim of this study was to compile information on the use of freshwater turtles and crocodilians as environmental biomonitors of inorganic element contamination. We searched for articles in databases using specific keywords. A total of 104 studies published between the years 1970 and 2020 were collected. We noted a general increase in the number of studies involving turtles and crocodilians during the study time period. The Order Testudines were the subjects of 46% of the analysed publications, and the Order Crocodylia accounted for 54%. Within these studies, we counted 39 species (turtles n = 29 and crocodilians n = 10). Forty chemical elements were evaluated in the analysed articles, of which the majority represented non-essential elements (Hg, Cd, Pb). Although internal organs constituted the main biological matrix chosen for each group (37%), we observed an increase in the use of non-destructive matrices in both groups (scale, blood, tail muscle, carapace). The majority of analysed studies used HNO3 for the sample decomposition, with the majority of analyses being performed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (53%). Mainly blank controls (19%), analyte recovery (18%) and replicates (18%) were used as methods of validating analytical procedures. Furthermore, the studies used certified reference materials, which measure the accuracy of the methods used. We conclude that the increase in the use of aquatic reptiles in environmental monitoring research is mainly due to their ability to reveal integrated changes in ecosystems, aiding in environmental public policy decision-making and effective management plans.

In the present work, leaf extract of Boswellia sacra was used as reductant for synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The variables such as volume of Boswellia sacra leaf extract (1%), volume of silver nitrate (1 mM), and temperature were optimized by response surface methodology via Box-Behnken design for the synthesis of AgNPs. Design-Expert software generated the optimum conditions for the highest yield of silver nanoparticles as 8 mL of 1 mM AgNO3, 8 mL of 1% Boswellia sacra leaf extract, and temperature = 55 °C. The formed AgNPs were isolated and purified by centrifugation process using ethanol/ distilled water. AgNPs were characterized using FTIR, SEM, TEM, EDX, and XRD. AgNPs showed surface plasmon resonance absorption band at 422 nm. XRD pattern indicated the crystalline nature of the particles (diameter 11.17 to 37.50 nm) with face-centered cubic structure. SEM and TEM images highlighted the formation of spherical AgNPs. The energy dispersive spectroscopic spectrum confirmed the presence of elemental silver. The microbial activity of AgNPs was evaluated against bacteria and fungi. Synthesized AgNPs were very effective against Gram-positive E. coli bacterial strains and fungal strains (Penicillium chrysogenum).

The Netravathi estuary is a micro- to mesotidal, tropical, shallow estuary with an abundant density of phytoplankton. The impact of the zooplankton grazing rate and the selected environmental variables on the phytoplankton community structure was studied seasonally from 2017 to 2019. Microplanktons of centric diatoms such as Skeletonema costatum and Cosinodiscus radiatus dominated during monsoon seasons, whereas dinoflagellates such as Peridinium sp. and Ceratium furca were observed in high numbers at the estuary during non-monsoon seasons. Water temperature showed a strong association with grazing rates of microzooplankton (r = 0.910). Canonical correspondence analysis studies established an intensification in grazing rate during non-monsoon seasons by calanoid copepods which in turn occasioned the reduction of microplanktons belonging to diatoms. Moreover, during monsoon seasons, diminution in grazing rates of calanoid copepods coupled with the presence of micro larvae as a secondary consumer of zooplankton resulted in the proliferation of centric diatoms. The grazing behaviour of microzooplankton affected the phytoplankton species diversity of the estuary in a negative manner (D = 0.29 in 2017 Pre-M, D = 0.76 in 2019 Pre-M). Selective grazing behaviour of calanoid copepods concerning temperature alteration exerted a strong influence in determining the phytoplankton community structure of the estuary to a great extent.

The objectives of this research are to evaluate Giardia and Cryptosporidium contamination in surface water supply in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) State in South Brazil in the years 2016 to 2020, assess seasonality, and to infer the population that may have been exposed to these protozoa through drinking water based on drinking water treatment efficiency. Data were obtained through the drinking water surveillance national information system. From 204 DWT plants in the state, 66 have been analyzed for protozoa. A total of 2304 analyses of protozoa in raw water were evaluated, of which 223 had both Giardia spp. cysts and/or Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in concentrations that varied from 0.1 to 21.5/L. A total of 2,712,125 people from 48 cities were at risk of having the presence of pathogenic protozoa in their drinking water. The probability of finding these protozoa was higher in winter. Giardia cysts were more likely to be found in a period without rain, suggesting that sewage was the main source of contamination. It is concluded that the springs of Rio Grande do Sul are impacted and the circulation of pathogenic protozoa through the territory is endemic with a probable source of contamination to sewage and livestock activity.

In this study, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) was detected in 114 fish samples collected from 6 administrative regions of Xiamen city, China. HBCD amounts ranged between ND (not detected) and 2.216 ng g−1 ww (mean, 0.127±0.318 ng g−1 ww). Besides, α-HBCD was the main diastereoisomer in these fish specimens, followed by β-HBCD. Meanwhile, γ-HBCD was not detected in any of the samples. Significant differences were recorded among fish species. The results indicated that the levels and detection rates of HBCD were higher in Trachinotus ovatus compared with other aquatic organisms. Therefore, Trachinotus ovatus could be used as a marine biological indicator of HBCD. Within the regions investigated, Siming was significantly different from Jimei, Haicang and Xiang'an. The spatial distribution of HBCD concentrations indicated higher mean levels in samples collected from Haicang, Jimei and Xiang'an, respectively, with the highest detection rates in Jimei and Xiang'an, which might be related to geographical location and intense industrial and urban activities. Estimation of daily HBCD intake was performed according to fish consumption in Xiamen residents. The medium bound HBCD amounts in fish were approximately 0.073 and 0.088 ng kg bw-1d-1 for male and female residents of Xiamen, respectively. Exposure doses of HBCD indicated no health concern for Xiamen residents.

Increasing levels of pollution put plants under stress, leading to changes in their biochemical factors, which can be measured using the pollution tolerance index (APTI). APTI is a measure of environmental stress on flora, and it is calculated using four parameters (chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, relative water content, and pH). Earlier work in the same belt showed a positive correlation between stress and APTI but concentrated on woody trees only. This study was conducted in the Durgapur industrial belt, West Bengal, from August 2019 to February 2020. Eighteen plant species (herbs) were collected, assessed, and categorized as sensitive, intermediate, and tolerant based on their seasonal APTI values. Results showed that Solanum sisymbriifolium fell in the intermediate range in all three seasons. Persicaria sp. was identified as a tolerant species throughout and could be used to form a green belt. Persicaria orientalis was a sensitive species and can be used as an indicator of pollution.

Shellfish-growing areas in marine environments are affected by pollutants that mainly originate from land, including streams, domestic wastewater, and the effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which may function as reservoirs of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs). The objective of this study was to identify the occurrence and distribution of antibiotic resistance at five oyster sampling sites and 11 major inland pollution sources in the drainage basin of Kamak Bay, Republic of Korea. Culture-based methods were used to estimate the diversity and abundance of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli strains isolated from oysters and major inland pollution sources. The percentages of ARB and multiple antibiotic resistance index values were significantly high in discharge water from small fishing villages without WWTPs. However, the percentages of antibiotic-resistant E. coli isolates from oysters were low, as there was no impact from major inland pollutants. Fourteen ARGs were also quantified from oysters and major inland pollution sources. Although most ARGs except for quinolones were widely distributed in domestic wastewater discharge and effluent from WWTPs, macrolide resistance genes (ermB and msrA) were detected mainly from oysters in Kamak Bay. This study will aid in tracking the sources of antibiotic contamination in shellfish to determine the correlation between shellfish and inland pollution sources.

Fecal pollution is a major contributor to the progressive degradation of Laguna Lake, the Philippines’ largest inland lake used for aquaculture, recreation, and as a source of irrigation and domestic water. Consequently, intestinal parasites may be present in this body of water, posing risks to water safety and human health. This study was able to detect the protozoan parasite, Giardia duodenalis, in three Laguna Lake stations and seven tributary rivers in a 13-month monitoring period by PCR amplification of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene of Giardia cysts concentrated from water samples. The pathogen was present in 37.7% of tributary samples (n = 69) and 16.7% of lake samples (n = 36). Notable frequencies of detection were observed in four tributary rivers —Bagumbayan, Taguig (66.7%); Santa Rosa, Laguna (55.6%); San Cristobal, Cabuyao, Laguna (44.4%); and Binan, Laguna (42.9%). All test SSU rRNA gene sequences were identified as human-infective genotypes of G. duodenalis predominated by Assemblage A (94.1%). Furthermore, analysis of the glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) gene revealed the possible presence of mixed genotypes in at least two samples. These results support the pressing need to include protozoan pathogen monitoring in Laguna Lake and its tributaries to prevent Giardia infection in humans and animals. This study also recommends microbial source tracking to identify fecal pollution sources and aid in regulation of waste discharges into the lake and its tributaries.
