Hydrobiogeochemical processes governing water quantity and quality are highly variable in space and time. Focusing on thirty river locations in Québec, Canada, three water quality hotness indices were used to classify watersheds as contaminant transport hotspots. Concentration and load data for suspended solids (SS), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorous (TP) were used to identify transport hotspots, and results were compared across hotness indices with different data requirements. The role of hydroclimatic and physiographic characteristics on the occurrence and temporal persistence of transport hotspots was examined. Results show that the identification of transport hotspots was dependent on both the type of data and the hotness index used. Relationships between temporal and spatial predictors, however, were generally consistent. Annual transport hotspot occurrence was found to be related to temporal characteristics such as the number of dry days, potential evapotranspiration, and snow water equivalent, while hotspot temporal persistence was correlated to landcover characteristics. Stark differences in the identification of SS, TN, and TP transport hotspots were attributed to differences in mobilization processes and provided insights into dominant water and nutrient flowpaths in the studied watersheds. This study highlighted the importance of comparing contaminant dynamics across watersheds even when high-frequency water quality data or discharge data are not available. Characterizing hotspot occurrence and persistence, among hotness indices and water quality parameters, could be useful for watershed managers when identifying problematic watersheds, exploring legacy effects, and establishing a prioritization framework for areas that would benefit from enhanced routine monitoring or targeted mitigation strategies., (© 2024. Land degradation often results in poor soil quality in many parts of Ethiopia, including the study area. To address this issue and promote sustainable land management practices, various land use and management methods (LUMMs) have been implemented. However, little information is available regarding how these management practices influence overall soil quality dynamics of the study area. This study aimed at evaluating soil quality dynamics in the Urago micro-watershed, central highlands of Ethiopia, under major LUMMs: barren land (BL), grassland (GL), established farm boundary (EFB), restored degraded land (RDL), and stone-supported soil bund (SSB). Forty-five disturbed and fifteen undisturbed soil samples were collected from the ploughed soil layer (0-20 cm) of each LUMM and analysed for selected physicochemical properties to be used as indicators of soil quality. Principal component analysis and multiple correlation were used to select the minimum data set (MDS) to evaluate the overall soil quality index (SQI). The MDS included SOC, clay content, exchangeable Mg 2+ , and available P, which could replace other indicators for assessing the overall soil quality dynamics of the study watershed. The result showed notable variations in particle-size fractions, soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), available P (av. P), and exchangeable Na + , K + , and Mg 2+ levels among the LUMMs. RDL had higher sand and silt contents than SSB, whereas SSB had higher clay content compared to RDL, GL, and BL. GL, RDL, and EFB showed significantly higher levels of SOC, TN, and av. P, respectively, compared to other LUMMs. The obtained SQI showed that GL had the highest score (0.847), followed by SSB (0.703), RDL (0.701), EFB (0.644), and BL (0.628). Organic composts such as "bokashi", obtained from the fermentation of bran mixtures and inoculated with microorganisms, improve soil characteristics. In Brazil, the most widely used formulation for the production of this compost is obtained from a mixture of wheat and castor bean bran, but both have a high monetary cost. Replacing these components with regionally available sources represents the possibility of reducing costs and making more sustainable use of this waste. The aim of this study was to analyze the chemical characteristics and determine the availability of nitrogen for the plants. The study was divided into two stages, consisting of an incubation test in the laboratory and a bioassay in the greenhouse using forage sorghum as an indicator species. In the laboratory trial, the treatments consisted of two raw material sources with a low C/N ratio (castor bean bran-CAB and cottonseed bran-COB), corresponding to 40% of the mixture; three sources with a high C/N ratio (wheat bran-WHB or rice bran-RIB), gradually replaced by passion fruit peel bran-PFPB), corresponding to 60% of the mixture. The materials were mixed, moistened, inoculated with microorganisms (Embiotic ® ) and kept in sealed containers with a capacity of 620 cm 3 for 21 days. In the greenhouse, in addition to the aforementioned treatments, seven controls were included: no addition of organic and synthetic N sources; ammonium nitrate; CAB; COB; WHB; RIB and PFPB. In the second stage, dry mass production and N content in sorghum plant tissues were determined, and the rates of N availability were estimated. It was found that the pH of the standard compost was 4.75, and in the other formulations it ranged from 4.62 to 5.3, the highest values being observed when WHB was fully replaced by RIB There was a significant difference in the EC values, but all were well below the value considered adequate. Replacing CAB with COB and WHB with RIB and PFPB resulted in a reduction in N content and an increase in the C:N ratio. Replacing WHB with PFPB led to an increase in K content and a reduction in P and Mg content. In the bioassay, the highest biomass production was in the treatments with the fermented composts, and the highest biological recovery of N was obtained in the ammonium nitrate treatment, followed by the CAB, COB and WHB treatments., (© 2024. Rapid socio-economic development has led to many water environmental issues in small watersheds such as non-compliance with water quality standards, complex pollution sources, and difficulties in water environment management. To achieve a quantitative evaluation of water quality, identify pollution sources, and implement refined management in small watersheds, this study collected monthly seven water quality indexes of four monitoring points from 2010 to 2023, and ten water quality indexes of 23 sampling points in the Shiting River and Mianyuan River which are tributaries of the Tuojiang River Basin. Then, water quality evaluation and pollution source analysis were conducted from both temporal and spatial perspectives using the Water Quality Index (WQI) method, the Absolute Principal Component Scores/Multiple Linear Regression (APCS-MLR) method, and the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) receptor modeling technique. The results indicated that except for total nitrogen (TN), the concentrations of other water quality indexes exhibited a decreasing trend, and all were divided into two obvious stages before and after 2016. Furthermore, the proportion of water quality grade of Good and above increased from 73.96 to 84.94% from 2010-2015 to 2016-2023, and the water quality grade of Good and above from upstream to downstream dropped from 100 to 23.33%. From the temporal scale, four and five pollution sources were identified in the first and second stages, respectively. The distinct TN pollutant is mainly affected by agricultural non-point sources (NPS), whose impact is enhanced from 17.76 to 78.31%. Total phosphorus (TP) was affected by the phosphorus chemical industry, whose contribution gradually weakened from 50.8 to 24.9%. From a spatial perspective, four and five pollution sources were identified in the upstream and downstream, respectively. Soil organic carbon (SOC) is known to vary among different ecosystems and soilscapes, yet the degree of variation remains uncertain. Comparing SOC levels in undisturbed ecosystems like forests with those in gradually altered ecosystems can provide valuable insights into the impact of land use on carbon dynamics. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different land uses on soil fertility parameters in the tropical region of Kerala, focusing on forests as well as cultivated agricultural landscape such as coconut, pepper, tapioca, acacia plantations, and mixed home garden cropping systems. Significant variations were observed among different crops and land use systems in terms of soil fertility. Forests exhibited the highest SOC content at 3.78 g kg-1, while acacia plantations showed the lowest at 0.76 g kg-1. Additionally, various soil properties such as different carbon fractions (e.g., humic acid, fulvic acid), total nitrogen, carbon, available nutrients, physical properties, aggregate size fractions, microbial biomass carbon, and spectral signatures differed significantly across the different land uses. These findings suggest a decline in soil fertility in altered ecosystems compared to adjacent forest soils, highlighting the vital role of forests in conserving natural resources and maintaining soil health. In addition, among the different landscapes studied, mixed cropping systems of home gardens sustained soil fertility better than monocropping systems. The observed variations in soil physicochemical properties among different land use types indicate a threat to sustainable crop production. Effective management practices aimed at improving soil fertility and sustaining crop production in these altered ecosystems are essential. This study highlights the importance of adopting appropriate management strategies to conserve soil health and ensure sustainable crop production in tropical landscapes like Kerala. Reservoir is easy to be polluted by nutrients and heavy metals in the surrounding soil. There is a close relationship between heavy metals and nutrients in soil. Nutrient salts will affect the activity of heavy metals, and heavy metal pollution will affect plant growth and nutrient salt absorption, thus affecting ecosystem health. This study was performed to evaluate nutrients (TN, TP) and heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the upper watershed of Xiashan Reservoir by the enrichment factor, the geoaccumulation index, the enrichment factor and leaching experiments. The results showed that the average enrichment of TN and TP reached the level of moderate pollution. The nutrient enrichment of different sampling sites increased gradually from south to north, which may be affected by the topography of the study area. The comprehensive trophic level exceeds the criteria for a state of severe eutrophication of water bodies, which may lead to the enrichment of nitrogen and phosphorus in the water body through processes such as runoff. Evaluation of the geoaccumulation index and potential ecological risk index revealed that the soil was primarily contaminated by Cd and Hg, which are in the level of considerable potential ecological risk and high potential ecological risk. So most attention should be paid to Cd and Hg pollution. Pollution control of heavy metals in soil is a priority because they are more difficult to leach than nutrients. Application of sewage sludge as fertilizer can be beneficial for sustainable agriculture as it could largely account for nitrogen and phosphorus demand for crops and has lower costs compared to other disposal routes, e.g., incineration, and sanitary landfills. This study evaluates the feasibility of pilot-scale pelletization of sewage sludge for non-food crops (e.g., ornamental plants). The co-pelletization method was designed by mixing sewage sludge and binder (tapioca starch) at a 9:1 sludge-to-starch weight ratio. The amount of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) of the resultant pellets were determined at 5.7%, 4.9%, and 0.2%, respectively. Following Malaysian and US Standards, non-essential elements and pathogenicity of the pelletized sewage sludge were measured below the predetermined limits and hence safe for agricultural application. The planting trial using 50% inorganic fertilizer + 50% sewage sludge pellets exhibited a promising result on the growth of the flowering plant Celosia plumosa, with having better dimension and color, 20% higher in height, 4% more chlorophyll content, 54% more leaf, 43% greater stem growth, and 27% more flowers compared to control. Likewise, the planting trial on Tagetes erecta resulted in 10.5% wider leaf, 10.6% heavier leaf dry weight, and 12.5% more chlorophyll content compared to control with full usage of inorganic fertilizer. High-quality development of water resources supports high-quality socio-economic development. High-quality development connects high-quality life, and clarifying the key management contents of small watersheds plays an important role in building ecologically clean small watersheds and promoting regional production and life. Previous research on pollution loads has focused on examining the impact of various external drivers on pollution loads but still lacks research on the impact of changes in pollution sources themselves on pollution loads. In this study, sensitivity analysis was used to determine the impact of changes from different sources on the total pollution loads, which can recognize the critical pollution sources. We first employed the pollutant discharge coefficient method to quantify non-point source pollution loads in the small watershed in the upstream Tuojiang River basin from 2010 to 2021. Then, combination sensitivity analysis with Getis-Ord Gi* was used to identify the critical sources and their crucial areas at the global, districts (counties), and towns (streets) scales, respectively. The results indicate: (1) The pollution loads of COD, NH 3 -N, TN, and TP all show a decreasing trend, reducing by 18.3%, 16.2%, 18.6%, and 28.1% from 2010 to 2021, respectively; (2) Livestock and poultry breeding pollution source is the most critical source for majority areas across watershed; (3) High-risk areas are mainly concentrated in Jingyang district and its subordinate towns (streets). There is a trend of low-pollution risk areas transitioning to high-pollution risk areas, with high-risk areas predominantly concentrated in the southeast and exhibiting a noticeable phenomenon of pollution load spilling around. Mapping of soil nutrient parameters using experimental measurements and geostatistical approaches to assist site-specific fertiliser advisories is anticipated to play a significant role in Smart Agriculture. FarmerZone is a cloud service envisioned by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, to provide advisories to assist smallholder farmers in India in enhancing their overall farm production. As a part of the project, we evaluated the soil spatial variability of three potato agroecological zones in India and provided soil health cards along with field-specific fertiliser recommendations for potato cultivation to farmers. Specifically, 705 surface samples were collected from three representative potato-growing districts of Indian states (Meerut, UP; Jalandhar, Punjab and Lahaul and Spiti, HP) and analysed for soil parameters such as organic carbon, macronutrients (NPK), micronutrients (Zn, Fe, Mn, and Cu), pH, and EC. The soil parameters were integrated into a geodatabase and subjected to kriging interpolation to create spatial soil maps of the targeted potato agroecological zones through best-fit experimental semivariograms. The spatial distribution showed a deficiency of soil organic carbon in two studied zones and available nitrogen among all studied zones. The available phosphorus and potassium varied among the agroecological zones. The micronutrient levels were largely sufficient in all the zones except at a few specific sites where nutrient advisories are recommended to replenish. The general management strategies were recommended based on the nutrient status in the studied area. This study clearly supports the significance of site-specific soil analytics and interpolated spatial soil mapping over any targeted agroecological zones as a promising strategy to deliver reliable advisories of fertiliser recommendations for smart farming., (© 2024. This study explored whether wildfire alters the soil properties and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) community composition when compared with burnt rangeland, non-burnt rangeland and adjacent tilled in mesothermal ecosystems. The study was carried out in August 2020, 1 year later after wildfire. The results of this study showed that the wildfire played a key role in altering soil characteristics and AMF community composition in Bartin Province located in the Western Black Sea Region. Soil samples were made according to standard methods. AMF spores were isolated according to the wet sieving method, and the spores of AMF were identified according to their morphological characteristics. Analysis of variance was performed to determine the differences between the parameters, and correlation analysis was performed to determine the relationships between the parameters. The highest values of soil organic carbon (2.20%), total nitrogen (0.18%), K 2 O (74.68 kg/da), root colonization (87.5%) and the frequency of occurrence of Funneliformis geosporum (20%), Claroideoglomus claroideum (16%) and Claroideoglomus etunicatum (11%) were found in burnt rangeland. Sporulation of Acaulospora dilatata, Acaulospora morrowiae, Acaulospora tuberculata, Scutellospora castanea, Scutellospora coralloidea, Scutellospora scutata, Glomus coremioides and Glomus multicaule was either decreased or completely inhibited in the burnt rangeland. While species diversity of AMF (12) decreased, the number of AMF spores (325.6 (number/50 gr soil)) increased in burnt areas. In conclusion, the number of spores and root colonization of AMF increased but species diversity of AMF reduced after the wildfire. Riverine phytoplankton takes up phosphate, dissolved silicate, and nitrate. We investigated which nutrients are depleted during a Lagrangian sampling in the free-flowing part of the River Elbe in 2023. As part of this study, we tested the hypotheses that nutrient depletion might be caused by (1) above-average phytoplankton biomass or by (2) decreased nutrient load of the river during previous years. Phytoplankton biomass increased up to 350 km in rivers and stopped increasing exactly when soluble reactive phosphorus had been completely consumed, and molar carbon to phosphorus ratios of seston indicated the beginning phosphorus limitation. The concentrations of dissolved silicate and nitrate dropped below the detection limit as well. In contrast to the results from eight previous longitudinal samplings taken in 2018-2022, nitrate exhaustion was detected for the first time in 2023 within the transect. This was caused neither by an above-average phytoplankton biomass nor by a declined overall nutrient load of the river in 2018-2023. Instead, denitrification appears to be the most plausible explanation for the downstream decrease of nitrate and the loss of total nitrogen which was supported by enrichment of nitrate stable isotopes and a decreasing ratio of nitrate 15 N/ 18 O., (© 2024. Wetlands provide numerous ecological services and are key habitats for aquatic flora and fauna. In the Beledanga wetland, the current study was conducted for 3 years, from July 2019 to June 2021, to evaluate the seasonal influence of physicochemical parameters on phytoplankton diversity and abundance patterns. Overall 48 genera of phytoplankton were observed. Bacillariophyceae (27%) contributed the maximum to the total phytoplankton density. The total abundance of phytoplankton was found utmost during monsoon (4.081 × 10 3 unit l -1 ) and least during post-monsoon (3.316 × 10 3 unit l -1 ). One-way analysis of variance indicated significant seasonal differences (p < 0.05) for some genera. The study gave the idea about the most influencing physic-chemical parameters (dissolved oxygen, turbidity, total hardness, Ca 2+ , and total nitrogen) on the growth of phytoplankton with the help of different multivariate and univariate analysis (canonical correspondence analysis and Karl Pearson's correlation). The study again highlighted that climate parameters (temperature and rainfall) had some effect on the phytoplanktonic groups. Our study conceded that N:P in the studied wetland was less than the Redfield ratio (16:1) in all three seasons, while the Si:P ratio was noticed in the high range (15:1) during pre-monsoon. The value of the Shannon diversity index and Margalef's species richness index were noticed to be > 3, which signified quite rich in phytoplankton diversity. But the value of Algal Pollution Index, which describes the ecological pollution level based on the present algal genera was observed high throughout all seasons, indicating organic load. So in future the studied wetland may get adversely affected with influence of anthropogenic activities. As a component of the biogeochemical cycle, litterfall contributes carbon and nutrients to forest ecosystems by transferring organic material to mineral soil. Litterfall therefore serves as an important indicator for soil fertility and ecosystem health. This study aimed to determine the impact of different levels of thinning (light, moderate, and heavy) on litterfall quantity (needles, branches, bark, cones, and miscellaneous parts) and on the amount of carbon and nutrients entering the ecosystem in black pine afforestation areas. Three levels of low thinning, namely light, moderate, and heavy thinning (15%, 25%, and 35% of breast height area, respectively), were applied as treatments. Additionally, a control plot was included in the experiment. Litterfall samples were collected four times per year (once per season) from 12 treatment plots for three years. In the laboratory, dry weight measurements and analyses of carbon and macro-micro nutrient elements (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Na, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn) were performed on litterfall samples taken from the field. Differences between treatments in terms of litterfall and the amount of carbon and nutrient elements entering the ecosystem were evaluated through variance analysis and the Duncan test. According to the findings, the quantity of litterfall input into the forest floor was highest in the control treatment, at 6,543 kg ha -1  year -1 and lowest in the heavy treatment, at 4,378 kg ha -1  year -1 , showing a significant variation in litterfall quantity. The input of C to the soil ranged between 2,233 kg ha -1  year -1 and 3,347 kg ha -1  year -1 depending on thinning treatment. Although thinning treatment reduced C input to the soil, there was no significant difference among treatments. This also applied to nutrient elements such as N, P, K, Mg, and S. Needles constituted the majority of litterfall components (60%) and had the highest C density among all components, at 51.2%. The weighted carbon ratio for litterfall was calculated at 50.8%. Considering carbon-focused planning, performing moderate thinning interventions in the study area or similar pine-afforested areas may be a suitable option for maintaining the sustainability and health of the forest., (© 2024. The issue of soil acidification in tea plantations has become a critical concern due to its potential impact on tea quality and plant health. Understanding the factors contributing to soil acidification is essential for implementing effective soil management strategies in tea-growing regions. In this study, a field study was conducted to investigate the effects of tea plantations on soil acidification and the associated acid-base buffering capacity (pHBC). We assessed acidification, pHBC, nutrient concentrations, and cation contents in the top 0-20 cm layer of soil across forty tea gardens of varying stand ages (0-5, 5-10, 10-20, and 20-40 years old) in Anji County, Zhejiang Province, China. The results revealed evident soil acidification due to tea plantation activities, with the lowest soil pH observed in tea gardens aged 10-20 and 20-40 years. Higher levels of soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), Olsen phosphorus (Olsen-P), available iron (Fe), and exchangeable hydrogen (H + ) were notably recorded in 10-20 and 20-40 years old tea garden soils, suggesting an increased risk of soil acidification with prolonged tea cultivation. Furthermore, prolonged tea cultivation correlated with increased pHBC, which amplified with tea stand ages. The investigation of the relationship between soil pHBC and various parameters highlighted significant influences from soil pH, SOM, cation exchange capacity, TN, available potassium, Olsen-P, exchangeable acids (including H + and aluminum), available Fe, and available zinc. Consequently, these findings underscore a substantial risk of soil acidification in tea gardens within the monitored region, with SOM and TN content being key driving factors influencing pHBC., (© 2024. This study analyzes arthropod biomass and abundance to track the changes in arthropod occurrence in relation to pesticide use in three winter wheat cropping systems managed at different intensities (organic, conventional, and hybrid). Arthropod occurrence was surveyed using three collection tools: sweeping nets, eclector traps, and yellow traps. Sampling was conducted over three years from 2020 to 2022 with 588 samples collected. The wet weight of the captured organisms was determined and arthropod abundance calculated. The application of a NOcsPS (no chemical-synthetic pesticides) strategy, a new hybrid cultivation method realized with optimized use of nitrogen fertilizers but without chemical-synthetic pesticides, showed a higher arthropod occurrence and performed more convincingly regarding produced arthropod biomass and abundance than the other cropping variants. The results also demonstrate a dependence of the obtained insect indices on the collection method. Although arthropod biomass and abundance correlated for all collection methods, the combination of various methods as well as multiple procedures of sample analysis gives a more realistic and comprehensive view of the impact of the wheat cultivation systems on the arthropod fauna than one-factor analyses., (© 2024. The study attempted to evaluate the agricultural soil quality using the Soil Quality Index (SQI) model in two Community Development Blocks, Ausgram-II and Memari-II of Purba Bardhaman District. Total 104 soil samples were collected (0-20 cm depth) from each Block to analyse 13 parameters (bulk density, soil porosity, soil aggregate stability, water holding capacity, infiltration rate, available nitrogen, available phosphorous, available potassium, soil pH, soil organic carbon, electrical conductivity, soil respiration and microbial biomass carbon) in this study. The Integrated Quality Index (IQI) was applied using the weighted additive approach and non-linear scoring technique to retain the Minimum Data Set (MDS). Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identified that SAS, BD, available K, pH, available N, and available P were the key contributing parameters to SQI in Ausgram-II. In contrast, WHC, SR, available N, pH, and SAS contributed the most to SQI in Memari-II. Results revealed that Ausgram-II (0.97) is notably higher SQI than Memari-II (0.69). In Ausgram-II, 99.72% of agricultural lands showed very high SQI (Grade I), whereas, in Memari-II, 49.95% of lands exhibited a moderate SQI (Grade III) and 49.90% showed a high SQI (Grade II). Sustainable Yield Index (SYI), Sensitivity Index (SI) and Efficiency Ratio (ER) were used to validate the SQIs. Primary production is an important driver of marine carbon storage. Besides the major nutrient elements nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon, primary production also depends on the availability of nutrient-type metals (e.g., Cu, Fe, Mo) and the absence of toxicologically relevant metals (e.g., Ni, Pb). Especially in coastal oceans, carbon storage and export to the open ocean is highly variable and influenced by anthropogenic eutrophication and pollution. To model future changes in coastal carbon storage processes, a solid baseline of nutrient and metal concentrations is crucial. The North Sea is an important shelf sea, influenced by riverine, atmospheric, Baltic Sea, and North Atlantic inputs. We measured the concentrations of dissolved nutrients (NH 4 + , NO 3 - , PO 4 3- , and SiO 4 4- ) and 26 metals in 337 water samples from various depths within the entire North Sea and Skagerrak. A principal component analysis enabled us to categorize the analytes into three groups according to their predominant behavior: tracers for seawater (e.g., Mo, U, V), recycling (e.g., NO 3 - , PO 4 3- , SiO 4 4- ), and riverine or anthropogenic input (e.g., Ni, Cu, Gd). Soil fertility (SF) is a crucial factor that directly impacts the performance and quality of crop production. To investigate the SF status in agricultural lands of winter wheat in Khuzestan province, 811 samples were collected from the soil surface (0-25 cm). Eleven soil properties, i.e., electrical conductivity (EC), soil organic carbon (SOC), total nitrogen (TN), calcium carbonate equivalent (CCE), available phosphorus (P av ), exchangeable potassium (K ex ), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and soil pH, were measured in the samples. The Nutrient Index Value (NIV) was calculated based on wheat nutritional requirements. The results indicated that 100%, 93%, and 74% of the study areas for CCE, pH, and EC fell into the low, moderate, and moderate to high NIV classes, respectively. Also, 25% of the area is classified as low fertility (NIV < 1.67), 75% falls under medium fertility (1.67 < NIV value < 2.33), and none in high fertility (NIV value > 2.33). Assessment of the mean wheat yield (AWY) and its comparison with NIV showed that the highest yield was in the Ramhormoz region (5200 kg.ha -1 ), while the lowest yield was in the Hendijan region (3000 kg.ha -1 ) with the lowest EC rate in the study area. Elevated levels of salinity and CCE in soils had the most negative impact on irrigated WY, while P av , TN, and Mn availability showed significant effects on crop production. Forest-savanna transition zones of West Africa are uniquely characterized by forest groves, forest patches, or forest islands, the importance of which for sustainable resource management and their potential for carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling is often underrated. Our study conducted a comparative analysis of the soil organic carbon and nutrient characteristics of the Anogeissus groves in the old Opara forest reserve and their adjoining arable lands. We established 30 sampling frames of 100 m × 100 m plots with 15 frames per land use type. For each sampling frame, six observation points were randomly selected, and composite soil samples were collected at soil depths of 0-20 cm and 20-50 cm per observation point. Our results showed Anogeissus groves and their adjoining arable lands to exist on similar landscapes while the groves have enriched soil morphological characteristics (e.g., soil color), higher soil organic carbon (SOC), and better nutrient characteristics. There were strong positive relationships between SOC, effective cation exchange capacity, total nitrogen, calcium, magnesium and calcium, zinc, electrical conductivity, and copper. The significant soil organic matter accumulation in the groves accounts for the overall improved soil characteristics over the adjoining arable lands. Preserving the groves and similar African ecosystems may be important in climate regulation, resources and biodiversity conservation, and ethnopharmacology for rural communities. Utilizing engineered wetlands for the cultivation of vegetables can help to overcome the problems of water and food scarcity. These wetlands are primarily designed for wastewater treatment, and their efficiency and effectiveness can be improved by selecting an appropriate substrate. To investigate the potential for nutrient and microbial removal, the Abelmoschus esculentus, Solanum melongena, and Capsicum annuum L. plants were selected to grow in a hybrid constructed wetland (CW) under natural conditions. The removal efficiency of the A. esculentus, S. melongena, and C. annuum L. in the CW system varied between 59.8 to 68.5% for total phosphorous (TP), 40.3 to 53.1% for ammonium (NH 4 + ), and 33.6 to 45.1% for total nitrogen (TN). The influent sample contained multiple pathogenic bacteria, including Alcaligenes faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli, with Capsicum annuum exhibiting a positive association with 7 of the 11 detected species, whereas microbial removal efficiency was notably higher in the S. melongena bed, potentially attributed to temperature variations and plant-facilitated oxygen release rates. While utilizing constructed wetlands for vegetable cultivation holds promising potential to address the disparity between water and food supply and yield various environmental, economic, and social benefits, it is crucial to note that the wastewater source may contain heavy metals, posing a risk of their transmission to humans through the food chain., (© 2024. Increases in fluxes of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the environment have led to negative impacts affecting drinking water, eutrophication, harmful algal blooms, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Because of the importance, scale, and complexity of these issues, it may be useful to consider methods for prioritizing nutrient research in representative drainage basins within a regional or national context. Two systematic, quantitative approaches were developed to (1) identify basins that geospatial data suggest are most impacted by nutrients and (2) identify basins that have the most variability in factors affecting nutrient sources and transport in order to prioritize basins for studies that seek to understand the key drivers of nutrient impacts. The "impact" approach relied on geospatial variables representing surface-water and groundwater nutrient concentrations, sources of N and P, and potential impacts on receptors (i.e., ecosystems and human health). The "variability" approach relied on geospatial variables representing surface-water nutrient concentrations, factors affecting sources and transport of nutrients, model accuracy, and potential receptor impacts. One hundred and sixty-three drainage basins throughout the contiguous United States were ranked nationally and within 18 hydrologic regions. Nationally, the top-ranked basins from the impact approach were concentrated in the Midwest, while those from the variability approach were dispersed across the nation. Regionally, the top-ranked basin selected by the two approaches differed in 15 of the 18 regions, with top-ranked basins selected by the variability approach having lower minimum concentrations and larger ranges in concentrations than top-ranked basins selected by the impact approach. The highest ranked basins identified using the variability approach may have advantages for exploring how landscape factors affect surface-water quality and how surface-water quality may affect ecosystems. In contrast, the impact approach prioritized basins in terms of human development and nutrient concentrations in both surface water and groundwater, thereby targeting areas where actions to reduce nutrient concentrations could have the largest effect on improving water availability and reducing ecosystem impacts., (© 2024. Reducing the environmental issues brought on by nutrients especially nitrogen pollution and loss is important. Owing to its unique composition and physico-chemical characteristics, biomass-derived biochar exhibits varying degrees of adsorption and interception for all types of soil nutrients. Thus, a novel way to improve nutrient absorption in the soil is to include biomass derived biochar into it. Various biomass-derived biochar from locally available biobased substances was synthesized through low-cost portable charring kiln. It has been quantified the influence of four biobased substances and three pyrolysis temperature on different morphomineralogical characteristics of biochar for utilizing as low-cost sorbent to manage nutrient adsorption and retention capacity. The morphomineralogical characteristics were principally manipulated by feedstocks rather than pyrolysis temperature. Higher porosity and surface area of biomass-derived biochar illustrated its soil structural modification and nutrient retention capacity along with their utilization for adsorbents. With increase in pyrolysis temperature, the adsorption capacity of biochar for NH 4 + -N and NO 3 - -N was gradually weakened and gradually enhanced respectively. The adsorption process of ammonia nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen conformed to the Langmuir model and the fitted KL value was less than 1 indicating that the adsorption process was uniform monolayer adsorption and the adsorption of biochar was favorable adsorption. With increase in biochar application rate the leaching of NO 3 - -N decreased having higher at 2.5 t ha -1 application rate followed by 5 t ha -1 and lower at 7.5 t ha -1 . In packed soil column, the NH 4 + -N in leachate was maximum in T 7 (18.6), followed by T 4 (17.9), T 13 (17.3) and minimum in T 10 (17.2) at same application rate of manures and biochar. Finally, results also revealed that packed soil column performed better as compared with intact soil column to retain soil nutrient and hence, leaching potential of nutrient was less in packed column than intact soil column. In conclusion, biomass-derived biochar can enhance the amount of nutrient that is absorbed into the soil while decreasing the loss of nutrient from the soil in the form of ammonia and nitrate. Glyphosate herbicide is an indispensable material in agricultural production. In order to explore the potential environmental effects of glyphosate application in karst slope farmland, this paper used a variable slope steel tank to simulate the surface microtopography and underground pore structure characteristics of karst slope farmland, and combined with artificial rainfall experiments to explore the migration path of glyphosate in karst slope farmland and the impact of spraying glyphosate on soil nitrogen and phosphorus loss. The results showed that under the condition of heavy rain, glyphosate in karst slope farmland was mainly transported and diffused by surface runoff, supplemented by underground runoff; secondly, in different hydrological paths, glyphosate directly affected the content of nitrogen and phosphorus in runoff, and all showed extremely significant positive correlation (p < 0.001). In addition, rainfall conditions such as rainfall intensity, rainfall duration, and runoff affected the content of nitrogen and phosphorus in runoff to varying degrees. In conclusion, the application of glyphosate significantly increased the content of nitrogen and phosphorus in different runoff and accelerated the loss of nitrogen and phosphorus from soil, which not only led to soil degradation, but also threatened the safety of aquatic ecosystem. Lake Nokoué, a major component of the hydrographic system of the Ouémé delta, is the largest lagoon-estuarine ecosystem in Benin. Recent studies have shown that benthic processes would actively participate in the maintenance of the eutrophication and biogeochemical cycle of this ecosystem. In order to understand the implication of the bottom on the quality of the waters of the lake, a monthly follow-up of ten (10) parameters of quality of the waters of the bottom was undertaken from July 2020 to December 2021 on a network of nineteen (19) stations distributed on the whole lake. Univariate and multivariate analysis techniques were used to assess the spatial and temporal dynamics of these waters. The Kruskal-Wallis test, PCA, correlation analysis and discriminant analysis all showed a very marked influence of the hydrological regime on the concentration of nutrients compared to the influence of anthropogenic activities around the lake and an influence of climatic conditions on internal processes. Indeed, water inflows from the Ouémé watershed are the main contributors of phosphorus in the lake while benthic processes are the most important contributors of nitrogen. Cluster analysis defined three significantly different areas in Lake Nokoué: the channel, the centre of the lake and the river mouth. Reservoir cascade systems have attracted the attention of scientists worldwide. The present study investigates the cascade of five reservoirs (R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5) along a 192-km water channel system located in the state of Ceará, in the Brazilian semiarid region. This cascade system was implemented in 2012 to promote water availability and security to the capital of Ceará and the strategic industry and port complex of the region. However, these reservoirs have faced a progressive degradation of water quality, which has resulted in intense eutrophication and high-water treatment costs. The study evaluates the dynamics of water quality from 2013 to 2021 along this reservoir cascade (from R1 to R5). The results revealed that water quality did not improve along the cascade system, differently from previous studies on reservoirs interconnected by natural rivers. This was attributed to the low water residence time and low capacity of pollutant removal along the man-made water channel system, as well as to the high internal phosphorus loads of the reservoirs. Multiple regression models involving the explanatory variables of total phosphorus, total nitrogen, chlorophyll-a, cyanobacteria, transparency, rainfall, and volume from upstream reservoirs were obtained to determine total phosphorus concentration in downstream reservoirs, considering different combinations of reservoir pairs in the cascade and different time delays. A clear trend of R 2 decline with the distance between the upstream and downstream reservoirs was observed. For example, the R 2 values for the correlations adjusted between R1 and R2 (48 km), R1 and R3 (172 km), R1 and R4 (178 km), and R1 and R5 (192 km) were 0.66, 0.32, 0.22, and 0.12, respectively. On the other hand, the adoption of time delays of the order of the cumulative residence times of the reservoirs promoted a significant improvement in the R 2 values. For instance, the best correlation adjusted between R1 and R5 improved from R 2  = 0.12 to 0.69 by considering a time delay of 21 months. This suggests that previous data from upstream reservoirs can be used to predict current and future total phosphorus concentration in downstream reservoirs. Understanding the spatial expansion process of salt marshes and quantifying the factors driving this expansion are crucial for the management and restoration of coastal wetlands. In this study, we aimed to illustrate the expansion process of Scirpus mariqueter using drone remote sensing and quantify its relationship with habitat quality. Our hypothesis was that landscape metrics could serve as valuable indicators for prioritizing habitat restoration efforts along the coast. We utilized drone remote sensing and adopted the simple Greenness Index to reflect the growth status of S. mariqueter. Using this index, we computed the standard deviation ellipse and growth center. To evaluate habitat quality, we developed a method based on our previous research and other relevant reports. We then conducted a quantitative analysis of the expansion process of S. mariqueter in areas with varying habitat quality. We found that S. mariqueter's optimal elevation was 3.7 m, with a range of 2.5 to 4.3 m. The threshold value for soil total nitrogen was 0.3 g/kg, and the tolerance threshold for soil salinity was 2500 ppm. These three factors, elevation, soil total nitrogen, and soil salinity, collectively influenced habitat quality, with weights of 0.68, 0.23, and 0.09, respectively, as determined through geodetector analysis. During the summer, we observed a dominance of dispersal in S. mariqueter, with the species primarily spreading to areas with increased habitat quality. Patch shapes tended to be compact and regular in this season. In contrast, during the autumn, a dominance of decline was observed, with S. mariqueter mainly distributing to areas exhibiting decreased habitat quality. Patch shapes tended to be complex and irregular in the autumn season. Eventually micro-geomorphic modification and patch shape filling methods based on UAV observations are proposed to aid wetland restoration. Changes in soil quality as a result of climate change and grazing regimens have become an important issue for rangeland sustainability. Although there has been much research on the impacts of overgrazing on soil in highland rangelands, Turkey, there has been little on the effects of light grazing on the soils. This study aimed to examine select soil parameters in the lightly grazed (LGR) and ungrazed rangelands (UGR) to evaluate the sustainability of the rangeland soils under the light grazing. Soil penetration resistance (SPR) was measured at depths of 0-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm. Soil samples were taken from the points where SPR measurements were made, and soil texture, soil bulk density (SBD), soil organic matter (SOM), soil organic carbon (SOC), and soil total nitrogen (TN) were determined. According to this study's findings, SOM, SOC, TN, SPR, and SBD levels were higher in LGR sites than in UGR sites. Although SPR was higher in the grazing site, it was discovered that this excess was smaller than the critical penetration resistance values. Because SPR is lower than the necessary resistance value for root development and SOM, SOC, and TN values are high, light grazing can be considered a sustainable approach. A proper understanding of soil parameters under different production systems of the world is necessary for efficient soil management. We, therefore, carried out the present study to assess the status of some selected soil properties (soil pH and electrical conductivity (EC)), phyto-available nutrients (available nitrogen (AN), available potassium (AK), exchangeable calcium (Ex. Ca), exchangeable magnesium (Ex. Mg), available sulfur (AS), and soil organic carbon (SOC) pools (SOC, total organic carbon (TOC), very labile C, labile C, less labile C, and non-labile C) and to establish relationships among the measured soil parameters at different depths of Vertisols of India under various land uses. A total of 150 composite soil samples (from 25 plots including nine from agricultural land, nine from horticultural land, three from forest land, and four from grassland) were collected from 6 soil depths viz, 0-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80, and 80-100 cm under agriculture, horticulture, forest, and grassland land uses present in Central India and analyzed. The values of soil pH, EC, AN, AK, Ex. Ca, Ex. Mg, and AS in various soil depths under different land uses varied widely. The values of SOC (0.19 to 1.00%), TOC (0.58 to 2.42%), very labile C (0.14 to 0.83%), labile C (0.05 to 0.25%), less labile C (0.05 to 0.26%) and non-labile C (0.23 to 1.42%) in various soil depths under different land uses also varied significantly. Forest and grassland land uses had higher levels of SOC, TOC, very labile, and non-labile C content in all the soil depths in comparison to SOC, TOC, very labile, and non-labile C content in different soil depths under agriculture and horticulture land use. The levels of SOC, TOC, very labile, and non-labile C content under all the land uses decreased with increasing soil depths. SOC was positively and significantly correlated with AN, AK, AS, and estimated SOC pools in surface soil layers. Principal component analysis (PCA) of soil parameters in different soil depths resulted in 5 principal components (PCs) with > 1 eigenvalue and accounting for > 75% variability. Extensive water and chemicals are used in the textile industry processes. Therefore, treatment of textile wastewater is vital to protect the environment, maintain the public health, and recover resources. However, due to poor operation and plant performance the partially treated textile wastewater was directly discharged to a nearby river. Thus, the aim of this study was to characterize the wastewater physicochemical properties and evaluate the performance of the textile factory-activated sludge process wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. In inlet and outlet of the WWTP, samples were collected for 6 months and analyzed on-site and in a laboratory for parameters including, dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, total Kjeldhal nitrogen (TKN), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ), total suspended solids (TSS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), nitrite, nitrate, and metallic compounds. The TSS, BOD 5 , COD, TP, nitrite, ammonia, and total chromium result were above the discharge limit with 73.2 mg/L, 48.45 mg/L, 144.08 mg/L, 7.9 mg/L, 1.36 mg/L, 1.96 mg/L, and 0.16 mg/L, respectively. Multiple regression models were developed for each overall, net moving average, and instantaneous effluent quality index (EQI). The predictor parameters BOD 5 , TN, COD, TSS, and TP (R 2 = 0.995 to 1.000) estimated the net pollution loads of all predictors as 492.55 kg/day and 655.44 kg/day. Except TN, TKN, and NO 3 , the remaining six performance parameters were violating the permissible limit daily. Furthermore, the overall plant efficiency was predicted as 38 % and 42 % for the moving average and instantaneous EQI, respectively. This study investigated the relationship between nutrient levels, source of fecal contamination, and pathogenic Leptospira in Puerto Rico's northern coast and San Juan Bay Estuary (SJBE) aquatic ecosystems. Microbial source tracking (MST) was also used to investigate the connections between sources of feces contamination and the presence of Leptospira. Eighty-seven water samples were collected during the June (n=44) and August (n=43) in 2020. To quantify phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations, standard USEPA protocols were utilized, specifically Methods 365.4 for total and dissolved phosphorus, 351.2 for total Kjeldahl nitrogen and ammonium, and 353.2 for nitrate. Lipl32 gene-specific quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to detect the presence of Leptospira. Human (HF183), canine (BacCan-UCD), and equine (HoF597) MST assays were utilized to trace the origins of fecal contamination. Forty one percent of the locations exceeded Puerto Rico's authorized total phosphorus limit of 160 g L -1 , while 34% exceeded the total nitrogen limit of 1700 g L -1 . Nearly half of the streams examined are affected by eutrophication. The MST analysis identified human and canine feces as the most prevalent contaminants, affecting approximately 50% of the sites. In addition, Leptospira was detected in 32% of the June samples. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.79) between the incidence of pathogenic Leptospira and the human bacterial marker (HF183). Lake restoration in developing economies, particularly in the tropics, is a major challenge given the severe levels of pollution from untreated wastewater and the warm climate conducive to microbial and algal growth. Restoration goals are often ill-defined or unachievable. Here we describe the successes that can be achieved through a control, compared with intervention case study of the two urban lakes in Bengaluru, India, one of the world's largest and fastest growing mega-cities. The unrestored control, Bellandur Lake, was severely polluted by 231 million litres per day (MLD) of untreated wastewater. The restoration site, Jakkur Lake, receives 10 MLD of treated wastewater and also receives some tertiary treatment by circulating the effluent through a constructed wetland before it enters the lake. The water quality of Bellandur Lake can only be described as extremely bad. Organic pollution levels in the main inflow were high (BOD 5 of 199 mg/l, faecal coliforms 6.9 Log MPN/100 ml, total suspended solids (TSS) of 285 mg/l) leading to the complete deoxygenation of lake even at the surface. The levels exceeded use-base standards for bathing water and fisheries. The high levels of organic pollution and low oxygen conditions also led to extreme levels of methane emissions that occasionally led to the lake surface catching fire. Total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations in the lake were extremely high (47 mg/l and 6.3 mg/l) respectively with low Secchi depth (SD). Despite the high nutrient levels, very little phytoplankton growth occurred (chlorophyll-a of 0 mg/l), most likely due to the high TSS loads which restricted light availability. In comparison, the wastewater treatment and wetland at Jakkur Lake markedly reduced organic pollution of the main inflow (BOD 5 of 32 mg/l, faecal coliforms 4.1 Log MPN/100 ml, TSS of 48 mg/l). Levels of coliforms in the lake were above the standards for bathing waters. Total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations in the lake reduced (10.5 mg/l, 2.4 mg/l) but still classify the lake as extremely hypereutrophic. The lower TSS levels did, however, enable dense phytoplankton blooms to develop (max chlorophyll-a of 600 µg/l) which are in part responsible for the higher levels of dissolved oxygen in the lake water, albeit and as expected with large diurnal fluctuations. The comparison highlights the benefits that standard wastewater treatment provides to restore urban tropical lakes in context of rapidly urbanising catchments, and even though Jakkur Lake is by no means fully restored, it sustains water quality that allow propagation of fisheries and shore-based recreation. It also greatly contributes to greenhouse gas emission reductions. This study conducted a spatio-temporal analysis of runoff, total suspended sediment, suspended particulate carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus loadings within the 2.06 km 2 Steppler subwatershed in southern Manitoba of Canada based on 11 years of field monitoring data collected at nine stations. Results showed that the nutrient losses were very small because of the implementation of multiple BMPs in the study area. However, a high spatio-temporal variation of runoff and water quality parameters was found for the nine fields within the subwatershed. The average runoff coefficient was 0.19 at the subwatershed outlet with sediment, suspended particulate carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus losses of 73.8, 6.10, 4.54, and 0.76 kg/ha respectively. Spring snowmelt runoff was about 74.5% of the annual runoff at the subwatershed outlet, while for sediment, suspended particulate carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus, the proportions were 61.1%, 63.6%, 74.9%, and 81.2% respectively during the monitoring period, which suggests that BMPs designed for reducing nutrient loadings from snowmelt runoff would be more effective than BMPs designed for reducing pollutant loading from rainfall storms in the study area. In recent years, the discharge of major pollutants in China's wastewater has been decreasing but remains at a high level. Controlling the discharge of pollutants in sewage is of great importance for protecting water quality and maintaining ecological balance. Based on data collected from 31 provinces in China from 2011 to 2020 (except 2018), this study analyzes the spatiotemporal variation emissions of the wastewater pollutants: chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen (NH 3 -N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP). The entropy method was used to evaluate the effectiveness of water pollution control in different provinces. Our results revealed that the total emission per gross domestic product (GDP) for COD, NH 3 -N, TN and TP in China decreased by 50.7%, 81.9%, 65.4% and 70.8%, respectively. In terms of regional annual emission differences, the Northwest region was the lowest compared with other regions, accounting for 4.87%-6.59% of the national pollutant emissions, and the Central China region was the highest, accounting for 22.4%-26.05% of the national pollutant emissions. The average value of pollutant emissions per unit of GDP decreased year-to-year overall, but Guangxi and Tibet showed a trend of first decreasing and then increasing. The correlation results indicated a significant correlation (0.977) between TN and TP emissions in wastewater in China during 2011-2020. Through clustering and Multidimensional Scaling model (MDS) analysis, Beijing and Shanghai have been performing well in controlling water pollution discharge, while the provinces of Tibet and Guangxi must still increase their efforts in water pollution control. The degradation of surface water quality has been a widespread concern around the world. However, irrigation canal water does not attract much attention although it is important to agriculture and population. In this study, a 5-year water quality monitoring of surface water was conducted in the lower West Main Canal of the Ganfu Plain irrigation district to identify the levels and pollution sources of nitrogen and phosphorus.Over 75% of samples had total phosphorus (TP) concentrations of > 0.02 mg/L, and all samples had total nitrogen (TN) concentrations of > 0.2 mg/L, indicating a risk of eutrophication. The concentrations of NO 3 - -N and NH 4 + -N averagely occupied 57% and 18% of TN, respectively. PCA analysis showed that phosphorus and nitrogen in canal water were associated with meteorological factors, urban life and surface runoff, agricultural cultivation, livestock-poultry breeding, and water-sediment interaction in the wet season, whereas they were affected by meteorological factors, industrial effluent, urban domestic sewage, and livestock-poultry breeding in the dry season. Absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model results revealed that (1) agricultural cultivation plus livestock-poultry breeding contributed 43.2% of TP in canal water in the wet season, while livestock-poultry breeding contributed 52.9% in the dry season, and (2) domestic sewage plus surface runoff contributed 29.4% of TN in the wet season, while livestock-poultry breeding contributed 45.9% in the dry season. Water transfer is an effective way to solve the unequal distribution of water resources to meet the needs of urban residents and industry. Annual wet weight data indicated that there may be algal blooms during water transfer. We explored the ecological risk of water transfer from Xiashan to the Jihongtan reservoir through algae growth potential (AGP) tests. The results showed that the Jihongtan reservoir had certain self-regulation abilities. When the total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) concentration was not more than 0.04 mg/L, the risk of algal bloom was low. When the N/P ratio (by mass) was less than 40, the ecological imbalance of algal growth may be caused. When the N/P ratio was 20, it was the best environment for algal growth. Under the current nutrient condition of the Jihongtan reservoir, the volume of ecological safety threshold in water transfer was 60% of the Jihongtan reservoir's capacity. If the nutrient level was further increased, the water transfer threshold would rise to 75%. In addition, water transfer may cause the homogenization of water quality and accelerate the eutrophication process of reservoirs. Tuojiang River watershed is an economically developed and densely populated area in Sichuan Province (southwest of China), which is also an important tributary of the Yangtze River. Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are the main pollutants affecting water quality, but there is still lack of study on the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of these two pollutants. In this study, the typical non-point source pollution loads in the Tuojiang River watershed are simulated by Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, and the spatial autocorrelation method is used to reveal the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of the pollution loads from the annual average and water periods. Combined with redundancy analysis (RDA) and geographically weighted regression (GWR) analysis, the main driving factors affecting the typical non-point source pollution loads in the Tuojiang River watershed are discussed from the global and local perspectives. The results show that (1) from different water periods, the pollution loads of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in three water periods show obviously different, is the highest in the abundant water period, with 323.4 kg/ha and 47.9 kg/ha, followed by the normal water period, with 95.7 kg/ha and 14.1 kg/ha, and the lowest in the dry water period, with 28.4 kg/ha and 4.2 kg/ha. The annual average value of TN pollution load is higher than that of TP, with 447.5 kg/ha and 66.1 kg/ha, respectively; (2) the TN and TP pollution loads are stable on the whole, and the overall level in the middle reaches is higher. The pollution loads of Shifang City and Mianzhu City are higher in all three water periods. (3) Elevation and slope are two main driving factors affecting the TN and TP pollution loads in the Tuojiang River watershed. Therefore, the visualization and quantification of temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of typical non-point source pollution loads in the Tuojiang River watershed are helpful to provide the basis for scientific prevention and control of pollution in the Tuojiang River watershed and are of great significance to promote the sustainable, coordinated, and healthy development of water environment and economy in the watershed., (© 2023. Invasive plants can change the soil ecological environment in the invasion area to adapt to their growth and reproduction through root exudates. Root exudates are the most direct manifestation of plant responses to external environmental changes, but there is a lack of studies on root exudates of invasive plants in the context of inevitable global warming and nitrogen deposition. In this research, we used widely targeted metabolomics to investigate Ambrosia trifida root exudates during seedling and maturity under warming and nitrogen deposition to reveal the possible mechanisms of A. trifida adaptation to climate change. The results showed that the organic acids increased under warming condition but decreased after nitrogen addition in the seedling stage. Phenolic acids increased greatly after nitrogen addition in the mature stage. Most phenolic acids were annotated in the phenylpropane metabolic pathway and tyrosine metabolism. Therefore, nitrogen deposition may increase the adaptability of A. trifida through root exudates, making it more invasive under global warming. Soil carbon and nitrogen levels are key indicators of soil fertility and are used to assess ecological value and safeguard the environment. Previous studies have focused on the contributions of vegetation, topography, physical and chemical qualities, and meteorology to soil carbon and nitrogen change, but there has been little consideration of landscape and ecological environment types as potential driving forces. The study investigated the horizontal and vertical distribution and influencing factors of total carbon and total nitrogen in soil at 0-20 and 20-50 cm depths in the source region of the Heihe River. A total of 16 influencing factors related to soil, vegetation, landscape, and ecological environment were selected, and their individual and synergistic effects on the distributions of total carbon and total nitrogen in soil were assessed. The results show gradually decreasing average values of soil total carbon and total nitrogen from the surface layer to the bottom layer, with larger values in the southeast part of the sampling region and smaller values in the northwest. Larger values of soil total carbon and total nitrogen at sampling points are distributed in areas with higher clay and silt and lower soil bulk density, pH, and sand. For environmental factors, larger values of soil total carbon and total nitrogen are distributed in areas with higher annual rainfall, net primary productivity, vegetation index, and urban building index, and lower surface moisture, maximum patch index, boundary density, and bare soil index. Among soil factors, soil bulk density and silt are most closely associated with soil total carbon and total nitrogen. Among surface factors, vegetation index, soil erosion, and urban building index have the greatest influence on vertical distribution, and maximum patch index, surface moisture, and net primary productivity have the greatest influence on horizontal distribution. In conclusion, vegetation, landscape, and soil physical properties all have a significant impact on the distribution of soil carbon and nitrogen, suggesting better strategies to improve soil fertility., (© 2023. Outbreaks of planktonic algae seriously affect the water quality of rivers and are difficult to control. Based on the analysis of the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of environmental factors, this study uses a support vector machine regression (SVR) algorithm to establish a chlorophyll a (Chl-a) prediction model and conduct Chl-a sensitivity analysis. In 2018, the average Chl-a content was 126.25 ug/L. The maximum total nitrogen (TN) content was 16.68 mg/L and high year-round. The average NH 4 + -N and total phosphorous (TP) contents were only 0.78 and 0.18 mg/L. The content of NH 4 + -N was higher in spring and increased significantly along the water flow, while TP decreased slightly along the water flow. We used a radial basis function kernel SVR model and tenfold cross-validation method to optimize parameters. The penalty parameter c was 1.4142, the kernel function parameter g was 1, and the training and verification errors were only 0.032 and 0.067, respectively, indicating a good model fit. Based on a sensitivity analysis of the SVR prediction model, the maximum sensitivity coefficients of Chl-a to TP and WT were 0.571 and 0.394, respectively, and the contributions were 33% and 22%, respectively. The next highest sensitivity coefficients were those of DO (0.28, 16%) and pH (0.243, 14%). The sensitivity coefficients of TN and NH 4 + -N were the lowest. Agricultural, industrial, and human activities in general threaten water quality, as well as the biotic integrity of aquatic ecosystems. The increased concentration of total nitrogen (TN) and phosphorus (TP) affects high concentrations of chlorophyll (Chl-a) in freshwater ecosystems, which causes the process of eutrophication of the waters of shallow lakes. Eutrophication, as an alarming threat to the global quality of surface waters, affects environmental degradation. This research assesses the risk of eutrophication caused by chemical oxygen demand (COD), TN, TP, Secchi disk (SD), and Chl-a using the trophic level index (TLI) in Palić and Ludaš lakes. Both lakes have been nominated as potential Natura 2000 areas in 2021 because they belong to important bird areas, and Ludaš Lake has the status of Ramsar site 3YU002. In the research period from 2011 to 2021, the results showed that the lake is in an extremely eutrophic state. Laboratory analyses indicate an increased concentration of Chl-a during autumn. In the paper, the normalized difference chlorophyll index (NDCI) was calculated using the Google Earth Engine platform, and the result indicates the loading of the lake throughout the year, with an emphasis on winter, summer, and autumn. By using satellite images and remote sensing, it is possible to determine the most degraded spots, which is a help to the researchers in choosing the places where the samples will be taken and thus act more efficiently on the most endangered parts, as well as reduce the costs of standard in situ methods., (© 2023. Land use change could profoundly influence the terrestrial ecosystem carbon (C) cycle. However, the effects of agricultural expansion and cropland abandonment on soil microbial respiration remain controversial, and the underlying mechanisms of the land use change effect are lacking. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive survey in four land use types (grassland, cropland, orchard, and old-field grassland) of North China Plain with eight replicates to explore the responses of soil microbial respiration to agricultural expansion and cropland abandonment. We collected surface soil (0-10 cm in depth) in each land use type to measure soil physicochemical property and microbial analysis. Our results showed that soil microbial respiration was significantly increased by 15.10 mg CO 2 kg -1  day -1 and 20.06 mg CO 2 kg -1  day -1 due to the conversion of grassland to cropland and orchard, respectively. It confirmed that agricultural expansion might exacerbate soil C emissions. On the contrary, the returning of cropland and orchard to old-field grassland significantly decreased soil microbial respiration by 16.51 mg CO 2 kg -1  day -1 and 21.47 mg CO 2 kg -1  day -1 , respectively. Effects of land use change on soil microbial respiration were predominately determined by soil organic and inorganic nitrogen contents, implying that nitrogen fertilizer plays an essential role in soil C loss. These findings highlight that cropland abandonment can effectively mitigate soil CO 2 emissions, which should be implemented in agricultural lands with low grain production and high C emissions. To investigate the effect of lake water backflowing on the aquatic ecosystem in the estuary, surface water samples in the backflowing and unbackflowing areas were collected from one typical estuary of Lake Taihu, Xitiaoxi River. 16S rRNA sequencing and redundancy analysis were conducted to quantitatively elucidate the correlation between microbial community and water quality parameters. Results indicated lake water backflowing would affect the relative distribution of nitrogen species and increase the concentration of total nitrogen (TN) and nitrate, especially in the outlets of municipal sewage and agricultural drainage. For backflowing areas, more frequent water exchange could lower the seasonal fluctuation of the abundance and diversity of microbial community. RDA results showed crucial water quality parameters that greatly influence bacterial community were total organic carbon (TOC), total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity (SAL), ammonia, nitrate, TN for backflowing areas, and TOC, TDS, SAL, ammonia, TN without nitrate for unbackflowing areas. Verrucomicrobia, Proteobacteria, Microcystis, and Arcobacter were dominant with 27.7%, 15.7%, 30.5%, and 25.7% contribution to the overall water quality in backflowing areas. Chloroflexi, Verrucomicrobia, Flavobacterium, and Nostocaceae were dominant with 25.0%, 18.4%, 22.3%, and 11.4% contribution to the overall water quality in unbackflowing areas. And lake water backflowing might mainly affect the amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism based on the metabolism function prediction. Agricultural non-point source pollution is threatening water environmental health of the Three Gorges reservoir. However, current studies for precision management of the agricultural non-point source pollution within this area are still limited. The objective of this study was identifying the critical areas and primary sources of agricultural non-point source pollution for precision management. Firstly, the inventory analysis approach was used to estimate the discharge amount of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from farmland fertilizer, crop residues, livestock breeding, and daily activities. Afterwards, the deviation standardization method was applied to evaluate the emission intensity of TN, TP, and COD, as well as calculating the comprehensive pollution index (CPI) of each village, based on which the critical areas for agricultural non-point source pollution management could be distinguished. Moreover, the equivalence pollution load method was conducted to identify the primary pollution sources within each critical zone. The above methods were implemented to an emigrant town within the Three Gorges reservoir area named Gufu. Results showed that agricultural non-point source pollution in Gufu town has been alleviated to a certain extent since 2016. Nevertheless, in four areas of the town (i.e., Longzhu, Fuzi, Shendu, and Maicang), the agricultural non-point source pollution still deserved attention and improvement. For the mentioned critical areas, farmland fertilizer and livestock breeding were the primary sources causing agricultural non-point source pollution. The emission amount of TN and TP from farmland fertilizer accounted for 60% and 48% of the total, respectively. And those from livestock breeding were 29% and 46%. Managing agricultural watersheds in an environmentally friendly manner necessitate the strategic implementation of well-targeted sustainable land management (SLM) practices that limit soil and nonpoint source pollution losses and translocation. Watershed-scale SLM-scenario modeling has the potential to identify efficient and effective management strategies from the field to the integrated landscape level. In a case study targeting a 66-hectare watershed in Petzenkirchen, Lower Austria, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was utilized to evaluate a variety of locally adoptable SLM practices. SWAT was calibrated and validated (monthly) at the catchment outlet for flow, sediment, nitrate-nitrogen (NO 3 -N), ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 -N), and mineralized phosphorus (PO 4 -P) using SWATplusR. Considering the locally existing agricultural practices and socioeconomic and environmental factors of the research area, four conservation practices were evaluated: baseline scenario, contour farming (CF), winter cover crops (CC), and a combination of no-till and cover crops (NT + CC). The NT + CC SLM practice was found to be the most effective soil conservation practice in reducing soil loss by around 80%, whereas CF obtained the best results for decreasing the nutrient loads of NO 3 -N and PO 4 -P by 11% and 35%, respectively. Soil application of pyrolyzed biomass (biochar) has been proposed as an effective strategy for managing degraded land, but its limitations as a sole nutrient supplier discourage its widespread application as a soil amendment. Excessive use of saline water for irrigation leads to buildup of salts and other toxic ions, which cause a decline in the availability of essential nutrients due to negative effects on the mineralization process. Therefore, a long-term incubation experiment was conducted for 52 weeks to study the individual or combined impact of pyrolyzed [biochar derived from rice residue (RB)] and unpyrolyzed organic materials [rice residue (RR) and animal manure (AM)] on nitrogen (N) dynamics in soil irrigated with water of varying electrical conductivity (EC) (EC 0.3 [non-saline canal water), EC 10 , and EC 15 dS m -1 (saline)]. Increasing salinity had an adverse effect on N mineralization, reducing it by 20-70% during the incubation period. Irrespective of the EC, soil amended with AM showed greater and faster N mineralization than unamended control, while individual application of RB or RR showed immobilization of N during the early period of incubation. However, conjoint application of pyrolyzed (RB) and unpyrolyzed organic materials (RR or AM) showed enhanced mineralized N content (26-96%) compared with the sole biochar-amended soil irrigated with water of different EC levels. It was most likely due to the synergic effect of unpyrolyzed materials on the mineralization rate of biochar. On the other hand, the high cation exchange capacity, large surface area, and greater total porosity of the biochar may cause stronger adsorption of free NH 4 + -N released from the labile organic amendments, thereby moderating the N mineralization process under saline conditions. Therefore, it is recommended that biochar be used in conjunction with AM or RR to ensure the prolonged availability of N in a saline environment., (© 2023. Inter-basin water transfer (IBWT) projects have been widely constructed to alleviate the pressure on water resources in water shortage basins. However, the ecological effects of IBWT projects have often been ignored. Based on the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model and a constructed total ecosystem services (TES) index, the impacts of IBWT projects on recipient basin ecosystem services were analyzed in this study. The results showed that the TES index was relatively stable from 2010 to 2020, but in the wet season it was 1.36 times that of the other months with high water yield and nutrient loads. Spatially, areas with high index values were mainly distributed in the sub-basins around the reservoirs. The IBWT projects had positive impacts on ecosystem services, and the TES index with IBWT projects was 5.98% higher than that without projects. Water yield and total nitrogen were the two most affected indexes, with increased of 5.65% and 5.41%, respectively, under the impacts of IBWT projects. Seasonally, the change rates of the TES index were less than 3% while the change rates of water yield and nitrogen load peaked at 8.23% and 53.42%, respectively, in March, owing to the large amount of water released from the reservoirs. Areas affected by the three evaluated IBWT projects accounted for 61%, 18%, and 11% of the watershed, respectively. Under the impact of each project, the TES index generally increased, whereas the impact decreased as the distance from the inflow location increased. Application of Chlorella vulgaris for polishing secondary effluent of a wastewater treatment (containing C, N and P) was investigated. As a first step, batch experiments were conducted in Bold's Basal Media (BBM) to quantify the effects of orthophosphates (0.1-107 mg/L), organic carbon (0-500 mg/L as acetate) and N/P ratio on the growth of Chlorella vulgaris. The results revealed that the orthophosphate concentration was found to control the removal rates of nitrates and phosphates; however, both were effectively removed (> 90%) when the initial orthophosphate concentration was 4-12 mg/L. The maximum nitrate and orthophosphate removals were observed at an N:P ratio of ~ 11. However, the specific growth rate (µ) was significantly increased (from 0.226 to 0.336 g/g/day) when the initial orthophosphate concentration was 0.1-4.3 mg/L. On the other hand, the presence of acetate had significantly improved the specific growth and specific nitrate removal rates of Chlorella vulgaris. The specific growth rate increased from 0.34 g/g/day in a purely autotrophic culture to 0.70 g/g/day in the presence of acetate. Subsequently, the Chlorella vulgaris (grown in BBM) was acclimated and grown in the membrane bioreactor (MBR)-treated real-time secondary effluent. Under the optimised conditions, 92% nitrate and 98% phosphate removals (with a growth rate of 0.192 g/g/day) were observed in the bio-park MBR effluent. Overall, the results indicate that coupling Chlorella vulgaris as a polishing treatment in existing wastewater treatment units could be beneficial for highest level of water reuse and energy recovery goals., (© 2023. Current oil spill forensic identification of source oils relies upon hydrocarbon biomarkers resistant to weathering. This international technique was developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), under EN 15522-2 Oil Spill Identification guidelines. The number of biomarkers have expanded at pace with technological advances, while distinguishing new biomarkers becomes more challenging due to interference of isobaric compounds, matrix effects, and high cost of weathering experiments. Application of high-resolution mass spectrometry enabled exploration of potential polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycle (PANH) oil biomarkers. The instrumentation showed reduction in isobaric and matrix interferences, allowing for identification of low-level PANH and alkylated PANHs (APANHs). Weathered oil samples, obtained from a marine microcosm weathering experiment, enabled comparison with source oils to identify new, stable forensic biomarkers. Soil erosion and nutrient loss are important environmental and ecological problems in the Dianchi watershed in southwestern China. Woodlands-the primary land type in the Dianchi watershed-play an important ecological role in controlling soil and water loss. In this study, we compared soil erosion and loss of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) in woodlands of different ages, i.e., young forest, medium forest, and near-mature forest, at the Dongda River catchment in south-western Dianchi watershed. Furthermore, changes in stoichiometries in soil were analyzed. The average degree of erosion of each forest age stage was below moderate. Based on the non-arable soil erosion modulus models of 137 Cs and 210 Pb ex , the soil erosion rates decreased gradually with the increasing forest age. The forest age affected soil nutrient distribution and loss. The losses of TOC and TP gradually decreased, while the losses of TN first increased and then decreased with the growth of forest age. TOC, TN, and TP were enriched in the topsoil. Forest age affected soil stoichiometry and soil nutrient supply level. In general, the forest can effectively reduce soil erosion and nutrient loss in the red soil area with the forest age increasing., (© 2023. Human dire need for environmental sustainability have triggered researchers to seek for organic substrates as an alternative to synthetic fertilizers in order to enhance bioremediation. Presently, nitrogen-rich organic substrate not only proffered the solution but also have proven useful in enhancing the rate of bioremediation. Animal manure is a nitrogen-rich organic substrate which has been found very effective for stimulating plant growth. Some of the animal manure used by researchers are poultry droppings, cow dung, goat manure, and pig manure. In all the papers reviewed, it was gathered that animal manure enhances bioremediation by providing nutrients favoring microbial growth and activities responsible hydrocarbon degradation. However, of the four commonly used animal manure, poultry droppings was severally reported to be a better biostimulant. Also, animal manure when sun-dried and pulverized yielded better results. It was observed that animal manure serves as substrates for earthworms which further accelerates the potential of the earthworms to remediate the soil. Also, the pollution of soil by crude oil causes a surge in its carbon content which may slow down microbial growth and activities. Thorough review of literatures, however, indicates that animal manure is capable of providing appropriate nutrient concentrations to offset such imbalance. Studies continue to lay credence to the efficacy of animal manure in enhancing microbial growth and activities responsible for the biodegradation of hydrocarbons contained in crude oil. Furthermore, the co-application of animal manure with other bioremediation strategies, such as phytoremediation and vermiremediation, should be combined for effective bioremediation of oil-contaminated environment., (© 2023.
