Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive imaging modality used for estimating the conductivity of an object Ω from boundary electrode measurements. In recent years, researchers achieved substantial progress in analytical and numerical methods for the EIT inverse problem. Despite the success, numerical instability is still a major hurdle due to many factors, including the discretization error of the problem. Furthermore, most algorithms with good performance are relatively time consuming and do not allow real-time applications. In our approach, the goal is to separate the unknown conductivity into two regions, namely the region of homogeneous background conductivity and the region of non-homogeneous conductivity. Therefore, we pose and solve the problem of shape reconstruction using machine learning. We propose a novel and simple jet intriguing neural network architecture capable of solving the EIT inverse problem. It addresses previous difficulties, including instability, and is easily adaptable to other ill-posed coefficient inverse problems. That is, the proposed model estimates the probability for a point of whether the conductivity belongs to the background region or to the non-homogeneous region on the continuous space R d ∩ Ω with d ∈ { 2 , 3 } . The proposed model does not make assumptions about the forward model and allows for solving the inverse problem in real time. The proposed machine learning approach for shape reconstruction is also used to improve gradient-based methods for estimating the unknown conductivity. In this paper, we propose a piece-wise constant reconstruction method that is novel in the inverse problem setting but inspired by recent approaches from the 3D vision community. We also extend this method into a novel constrained reconstruction method. We present extensive numerical experiments to show the performance of the architecture and compare the proposed method with previous analytic algorithms, mainly the monotonicity-based shape reconstruction algorithm and iteratively regularized Gauss–Newton method. This paper presents a method for the transparent, robust, and highly capacitive watermarking of video signals using an information mapper. The proposed architecture is based on the use of deep neural networks to embed the watermark in the luminance channel in the YUV color space. An information mapper was used to enable the transformation of a multi-bit binary signature of varying capacitance reflecting the entropy measure of the system into a watermark embedded in the signal frame. To confirm the effectiveness of the method, tests were carried out for video frames with a resolution of 256 × 256 pixels, with a watermark capacity of 4 to 16,384 bits. In this paper, we study the learnability of the Boolean inner product by a systematic simulation study. The family of the Boolean inner product function is known to be representable by neural networks of threshold neurons of depth 3 with only 2 n + 1 units (n the input dimension)—whereas an exact representation by a depth 2 network cannot possibly be of polynomial size. This result can be seen as a strong argument for deep neural network architectures. In our study, we found that this depth 3 architecture of the Boolean inner product is difficult to train, much harder than the depth 2 network, at least for the small input size scenarios n ≤ 16 . Nonetheless, the accuracy of the deep architecture increased with the dimension of the input space to 94% on average, which means that multiple restarts are needed to find the compact depth 3 architecture. Replacing the fully connected first layer by a partially connected layer (a kind of convolutional layer sparsely connected with weight sharing) can significantly improve the learning performance up to 99% accuracy in simulations. Another way to improve the learnability of the compact depth 3 representation of the inner product could be achieved by adding just a few additional units into the first hidden layer. When computers started to become a dominant part of technology around the 1950s, fundamental questions about reliable designs and robustness were of great relevance. Their development gave rise to the exploration of new questions, such as what made brains reliable (since neurons can die) and how computers could get inspiration from neural systems. In parallel, the first artificial neural networks came to life. Since then, the comparative view between brains and computers has been developed in new, sometimes unexpected directions. With the rise of deep learning and the development of connectomics, an evolutionary look at how both hardware and neural complexity have evolved or designed is required. In this paper, we argue that important similarities have resulted both from convergent evolution (the inevitable outcome of architectural constraints) and inspiration of hardware and software principles guided by toy pictures of neurobiology. Moreover, dissimilarities and gaps originate from the lack of major innovations that have paved the way to biological computing (including brains) that are completely absent within the artificial domain. As it occurs within synthetic biocomputation, we can also ask whether alternative minds can emerge from A.I. designs. Stability of a class of fractional-order neural networks (FONNs) is analyzed in this paper. First, two sufficient conditions for convergence of the solution for such systems are obtained by utilizing Gronwall-Bellman lemma and Laplace transform technique. Then, according to the fractional-order Lyapunov second method and linear feedback control, the synchronization problem between two fractional-order chaotic neural networks is investigated. In this paper, the synchronization problem of fractional-order complex-valued neural networks with discrete and distributed delays is investigated. Based on the adaptive control and Lyapunov function theory, some sufficient conditions are derived to ensure the states of two fractional-order complex-valued neural networks with discrete and distributed delays achieve complete synchronization rapidly. Neural networks have been extensively applied to a variety of tasks, achieving astounding results. Applying neural networks in the scientific field is an important research direction that is gaining increasing attention. In scientific applications, the scale of neural networks is generally moderate size, mainly to ensure the speed of inference during application. Additionally, comparing neural networks to traditional algorithms in scientific applications is inevitable. These applications often require rapid computations, making the reduction in neural network sizes increasingly important. Existing work has found that the powerful capabilities of neural networks are primarily due to their nonlinearity. Theoretical work has discovered that under strong nonlinearity, neurons in the same layer tend to behave similarly, a phenomenon known as condensation. Condensation offers an opportunity to reduce the scale of neural networks to a smaller subnetwork with a similar performance. In this article, we propose a condensation reduction method to verify the feasibility of this idea in practical problems, thereby validating existing theories. Our reduction method can currently be applied to both fully connected networks and convolutional networks, achieving positive results. In complex combustion acceleration tasks, we reduced the size of the neural network to 41.7% of its original scale while maintaining prediction accuracy. In the CIFAR10 image classification task, we reduced the network size to 11.5% of the original scale, still maintaining a satisfactory validation accuracy. Information plane analysis, describing the mutual information between the input and a hidden layer and between a hidden layer and the target over time, has recently been proposed to analyze the training of neural networks. Since the activations of a hidden layer are typically continuous-valued, this mutual information cannot be computed analytically and must thus be estimated, resulting in apparently inconsistent or even contradicting results in the literature. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate how information plane analysis can still be a valuable tool for analyzing neural network training. To this end, we complement the prevailing binning estimator for mutual information with a geometric interpretation. With this geometric interpretation in mind, we evaluate the impact of regularization and interpret phenomena such as underfitting and overfitting. Recently, the scientific community has witnessed a substantial increase in the generation of protein sequence data, triggering emergent challenges of increasing importance, namely efficient storage and improved data analysis. For both applications, data compression is a straightforward solution. However, in the literature, the number of specific protein sequence compressors is relatively low. Moreover, these specialized compressors marginally improve the compression ratio over the best general-purpose compressors. In this paper, we present AC2, a new lossless data compressor for protein (or amino acid) sequences. AC2 uses a neural network to mix experts with a stacked generalization approach and individual cache-hash memory models to the highest-context orders. Compared to the previous compressor (AC), we show gains of 2–9% and 6–7% in reference-free and reference-based modes, respectively. These gains come at the cost of three times slower computations. AC2 also improves memory usage against AC, with requirements about seven times lower, without being affected by the sequences' input size. As an analysis application, we use AC2 to measure the similarity between each SARS-CoV-2 protein sequence with each viral protein sequence from the whole UniProt database. The results consistently show higher similarity to the pangolin coronavirus, followed by the bat and human coronaviruses, contributing with critical results to a current controversial subject. Recent advances in statistical inference have significantly expanded the toolbox of probabilistic modeling. Historically, probabilistic modeling has been constrained to very restricted model classes, where exact or approximate probabilistic inference is feasible. However, developments in variational inference, a general form of approximate probabilistic inference that originated in statistical physics, have enabled probabilistic modeling to overcome these limitations: (i) Approximate probabilistic inference is now possible over a broad class of probabilistic models containing a large number of parameters, and (ii) scalable inference methods based on stochastic gradient descent and distributed computing engines allow probabilistic modeling to be applied to massive data sets. One important practical consequence of these advances is the possibility to include deep neural networks within probabilistic models, thereby capturing complex non-linear stochastic relationships between the random variables. These advances, in conjunction with the release of novel probabilistic modeling toolboxes, have greatly expanded the scope of applications of probabilistic models, and allowed the models to take advantage of the recent strides made by the deep learning community. An information model is outlined, which represents an intelligent system of metallographic analysis in the form of a set of subsystems, the interaction of which ensures the performance of metallographic analysis functions. The structure of the information storage subsystem for metallographic analysis is presented. The deployment model of an intelligent metallographic analysis system is proposed and described. The paper outlines the approach to the presentation of an expert subsystem for metallographic quality control of metals based on a neural network. The process of finding a close precedent in metallographic analysis with reference to a multilayer neural network is described. An intelligent metallographic analysis system is described, which based on proposed information model. A specialized software of an intelligent metallographic analysis system is presented. Regularization of neural networks can alleviate overfitting in the training phase. Current regularizationmethods, such as Dropout and DropConnect, randomly drop neural nodes or connections based on a uniform prior. Such a data-independent strategy does not take into consideration of the quality of individual unit or connection. In this paper, we aim to develop a data-dependent approach to regularizing neural network in the framework of Information Geometry. A measurement for the quality of connections is proposed, namely confidence. Specifically, the confidence of a connection is derived from its contribution to the Fisher information distance. The network is adjusted by retaining the confident connections and discarding the less confident ones. The adjusted network, named as ConfNet, would carry the majority of variations in the sample data. The relationships among confidence estimation, Maximum Likelihood Estimation and classical model selection criteria (like Akaike information criterion) is investigated and discussed theoretically. Furthermore, a Stochastic ConfNet is designed by adding a self-adaptive probabilistic sampling strategy. In this paper, a new class of impulsive neural networks with fractional-like derivatives is defined, and the practical stability properties of the solutions are investigated. The stability analysis exploits a new type of Lyapunov-like functions and their derivatives. Furthermore, the obtained results are applied to a bidirectional associative memory (BAM) neural network model with fractional-like derivatives. The calculation of the Augmented Inverse Probability Weighting (AIPW) estimator of the Average Treatment Effect (ATE) is carried out in two steps, where in the first step, the treatment and outcome are modeled, and in the second step, the predictions are inserted into the AIPW estimator. The model misspecification in the first step has led researchers to utilize Machine Learning algorithms instead of parametric algorithms. However, the existence of strong confounders and/or Instrumental Variables (IVs) can lead the complex ML algorithms to provide perfect predictions for the treatment model which can violate the positivity assumption and elevate the variance of AIPW estimators. Thus the complexity of ML algorithms must be controlled to avoid perfect predictions for the treatment model while still learning the relationship between the confounders and the treatment and outcome. We use two NN architectures with an L 1 -regularization on specific NN parameters and investigate how their certain hyperparameters should be tuned in the presence of confounders and IVs to achieve a low bias-variance tradeoff for ATE estimators such as AIPW estimator. Purpose: In this work, we propose an implementation of the Bienenstock–Cooper–Munro (BCM) model, obtained by a combination of the classical framework and modern deep learning methodologies. The BCM model remains one of the most promising approaches to modeling the synaptic plasticity of neurons, but its application has remained mainly confined to neuroscience simulations and few applications in data science. Methods: To improve the convergence efficiency of the BCM model, we combine the original plasticity rule with the optimization tools of modern deep learning. By numerical simulation on standard benchmark datasets, we prove the efficiency of the BCM model in learning, memorization capacity, and feature extraction. Results: In all the numerical simulations, the visualization of neuronal synaptic weights confirms the memorization of human-interpretable subsets of patterns. We numerically prove that the selectivity obtained by BCM neurons is indicative of an internal feature extraction procedure, useful for patterns clustering and classification. The introduction of competitiveness between neurons in the same BCM network allows the network to modulate the memorization capacity of the model and the consequent model selectivity. Conclusions: The proposed improvements make the BCM model a suitable alternative to standard machine learning techniques for both feature selection and classification tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the asymptotic law of a network of interacting neurons when the number of neurons becomes infinite. Given a completely connected network of neurons in which the synaptic weights are Gaussian correlated random variables, we describe the asymptotic law of the network when the number of neurons goes to infinity. We introduce the process-level empirical measure of the trajectories of the solutions to the equations of the finite network of neurons and the averaged law (with respect to the synaptic weights) of the trajectories of the solutions to the equations of the network of neurons. The main result of this article is that the image law through the empirical measure satisfies a large deviation principle with a good rate function which is shown to have a unique global minimum. Inspired by the pioneering work of the information bottleneck (IB) principle for Deep Neural Networks' (DNNs) analysis, we thoroughly study the relationship among the model accuracy, I (X ; T) and I (T ; Y) , where I (X ; T) and I (T ; Y) are the mutual information of DNN's output T with input X and label Y. Then, we design an information plane-based framework to evaluate the capability of DNNs (including CNNs) for image classification. Instead of each hidden layer's output, our framework focuses on the model output T. We successfully apply our framework to many application scenarios arising in deep learning and image classification problems, such as image classification with unbalanced data distribution, model selection, and transfer learning. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the information plane-based framework: Our framework may facilitate a quick model selection and determine the number of samples needed for each class in the unbalanced classification problem.
