Hoffman Construction Co. (Portland, OR) utilized slipform construction techniques to rush the completion of two 31-ft-diameter elevator shafts in Oregon's light rail project. Hoffman built a three-level slipform assembly with separate preparation, pour and finishing platforms riding 16 three-ton and two six-ton hydraulic jacks. The work on the elevator shaft was done continuously for 21 days with the slipform assembly rising six inches per hour to assure a continuous pour and avoid joints in the casting.

Project engineer Robert Englekirk Consulting Structural Engineers had to sink some 210 reinforced concrete piles to hold down a 39-foot-deep dewatering mat for the 10-storey parking building of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, CA. The engineering firm, which had laid the dewatering mat in order to excavate for the three parking levels that will have to be undergound if the building is to stay below the 75-foot height restriction in Beverly Hills, added the piles when it found that water level could rise to within nine feet of the surface.
