The article focuses on problems in design specifications and equipment schedule compliance in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry in the U.S. The author mentioned some problems in air-handling units and noted that design selections that are too far to the right on the fan curve indicate that the fan operates beyond normal limits. The author stated that paying attention to details is important in laying out a utility fan set.
The article focuses on retrofit to a VRF system for a corporate Office building using design-bid-build project delivery. Topics inlcude the HVAC system selection and design intent are based on the process has outlined in ASHRAE Handbook 2020, the finalized system selection shall be decentralized HVAC systems and terminal fan coil units, and heating systems consist of six variable refrigerant flow (VRF) heat recovery systems integrated with six VRF heat recovery air conditioning systems.
The author discusses their group's approach in designing heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and automatic temperature controls systems using the combined sequence-FPT format. According to him, the approach enables the engineer to think through the system concept earlier in the project to clearly understand the design. He noted that it is better to have error in the paper early in the design than to have a problem with the system existing at zero degrees Fahrenheit.
