We analyzed epidemiological, clinical characteristics, and the response to treatment in people living with HIV (PLHIV) who recently acquired hepatitis C (RAHC) in a multicentre study in Madrid (Spain).

Rilpivirine (RPV) is an antiretroviral drug characterized by good tolerability and a favorable liver safety profile. Recent research has shown that RPV ameliorates liver fibrosis in animal models of various chronic liver diseases. Our study aimed to analyze the effect of RPV on liver fibrosis by assessing changes in liver stiffness using transient elastography.

This update to the document on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in adults, which has been prepared jointly by GeSIDA and the Spanish National AIDS Plan for the last two decades, supersedes the document published in 2017.1The update provides physicians treating HIV-1-infected adults with evidence-based recommendations to guide their therapeutic decisions. The main difference with respect to the previous document concerns recommended initial ART regimens, only three of which are maintained as preferential. All three include dolutegravir or raltegravir, together with emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide or abacavir/lamivudine. Other differences concern the section on switching ART in patients with suppressed viral replication, which now includes new two- and three-drug regimens, and the antiretroviral drugs recommended for pregnant women and patients with tuberculosis. A recommendation has also been added for patients who present with acute HIV infection after pre-exposure prophylaxis.

In the last decades, microbiology laboratories have undergone unprecedented technological changes which have revolutionized the diagnosis of infectious diseases. They have last generation technology which allows precise, rapid and effective diagnosis of a wide range of infectious diseases, while also providing valuable information on the antibiotic sensitivity/resistance of the causal microorganism, thereby notably reducing the morbidity and mortality of the patients and at the same time improving in-hospital patient management. Several studies have shown that with the increase in the use of rapid diagnostic techniques this technological advancement has a greater impact when accessibility to the microbiology laboratory is possible beyond the usual 7h workday. This document discusses the need for clinical microbiology services to work 24h a day, 7 days a week (24/7).
