Due to the complex geostress and mining conditions in the coal seam with depth of 800 m, stability of surrounding rock for gob‐side entry retaining is very difficult to achieve. In this paper, we firstly propose an innovative bolt‐grouting controlled roof‐cutting for gob‐side entry retaining (BCR‐GER) approach for deep coal mines. Secondly, a mechanical model of "surrounding rock‐supporting body" for BCR‐GER is constructed, which consists of coal wall, roadside props, and gangues in gob (the whole supporting body). Thirdly, the key parameters (ie, cutting height, cutting angle, grouting cable length, and row of roadside props) are designed. Finally, field practice was applied at the No. 31120 haulage roadway of the Suncun coal mine in China, and in situ investigations were conducted for verification. Field measurement results show that maximum convergences of roof‐to‐floor and side‐to‐side were 264 mm and 113 mm, respectively. What is more, the maximum support resistance of roadside props was reduced by approximately 58%. The deformation and failure of surrounding rock were effectively controlled, and the pressure on roadside props was greatly reduced. This research fully considers the bearing properties of gangues in gob, eliminates the secondary disasters caused by borehole blasting, and provides guidance and reference for deep surrounding rock control of the same or similar gob‐side entry. The revelation of the distribution characteristics of stress and fractures in the floor strata is of great significance to improve the regional gas drainage efficiency and to eliminate or reduce the risk of coal and gas outburst in adjacent coal seams during multi‐seam mining. In this paper, the stress distribution in the floor under mining condition was derived, and the characteristics of stress zones in the floor were elaborated while mining the 22201 working face in Shaqu coal mine in Shanxi province, China. Besides, the propagation laws of fractures in different stress zones were theoretically analyzed, and the distribution law of fracture angles in the floor strata under different mining‐induced stresses was obtained. The research results demonstrate that the compression and transition zones show high vertical stress and less developed fractures and are dominated by fractures with a large angle (>60°), which is unfavorable for gas drainage. The expansion zone in the floor within 2‐40 m in the rear of the working face is characterized by high unloading degree of vertical stress and developed fractures. Moreover, fractures with a small angle (<60°) dominate the spatial distribution of the fractures, which is favorable for gas drainage. The research results can not only be a beneficial supplement to the theory of coal and gas co‐exploitation in multi‐seam mining but also provide theoretical support for optimizing the design parameters of cross‐measure boreholes under similar conditions. The coal production exploited from extra‐thick coal seams accounts for 45% of China's total coal production. With large coal output, the extra‐thick coal seams require that the chamber section be more than 100 m2. In case of parting (the noncoal rock, usually mudstone, sandwiched in the coal seam) in the extra‐thick coal seams, the integrity of the coal seams will be damaged and the large‐section chamber is extremely easy to occur rib spalling and roof leakage, which will increase the chamber's supporting difficulty. To solve such problems, this paper took the electromechanical chamber in Tashan Coal Mine as the engineering background and analyzed the deformation and failure characteristics of this chamber surrounding rocks by the numerical simulation method during the excavation process. The results indicated that the failure areas of surrounding rocks were mainly in partings, chamber ribs, and chamber dome with the failure depths of 15 m, 10 m, and 5 m, respectively. Based on the obtained deformation and failure characteristics, the supporting method of grouting integrated with high‐strength bolts and anchor cables was put forward. The grouting method was firstly used to improve the integrity of the chamber surrounding rocks, and the high‐strength bolts and anchor cables were used for supporting. Then, the supporting parameters of the bolts and anchor cables and the grouting parameters were optimized by the numerical simulation method. The optimized parameters were applied in the electromechanical chamber in Tashan Coal Mine, and the on‐site chamber ribs lateral displacement and roof separation amounts were only 0.018 m and 0.012 m, respectively, indicating that the surrounding rocks were controlled effectively. Coal and gas outburst is a potentially fatal risk during the mining of gassy coal seams, which seriously threatens the safe mining of collieries. To understand the outburst mechanism and evolution rules, a new apparatus (LSTT) was developed to conduct simulated experiment. In the context of an outburst accident in Dingji coal mine, the authors launched an authentic outburst experiment to replay the outburst accident. Experimental apparatus, similar criterion, coal‐like materials and gas sources, and experimental design were discussed systematically in this paper. Experimentally, the study analyzed the geo‐stress has significant influence on the outburst evolution. At the driving face, the stress concentration possibly caused gas outburst, under the influence of mining‐induced stress. After the outburst occurred, the stress balance of the coal changed, resulting in the instability of the coal. Furthermore, the elastic energy, gas enthalpy, and gravitational potential energy were released rapidly. The experimental result stated that outburst coal has the sorting characteristics, in line with the field outburst law. The intensity prediction model has been built based on the energy model. Moreover, the factors that impact outburst intensity were analyzed. In the process of coal and gas outburst, the gas enthalpy of gas and the elastic potential of coal are the main energy sources. China is vigorously promoting the development of coalbed methane (CBM) resources because CBM is cleaner than coal and a hazardous gas in coal mining. However, the CBM production in China is significantly lower than that in other coal‐rich countries, such as Australia and the United States. In this paper, the main problems hindering CBM development in China are discussed to provide management suggestions for the government. These key problems include exploration and development techniques, the overlap of mining rights, management, financial supporting policy, investment environment, regulations, and market conditions. The results of this study indicate that to improve the development of the CBM industry in China, national and local governments must enact specific and exercisable regulations to increase financial support, improve technology, increase investment in CBM exploration, strengthen public project establishment, and improve the reform of CBM exploration and development policies. The Yangjiacun coal mine, located in western China, exhibits distinctive characteristics, such as its shallow depth, thick bedrock, thin loose layer, and unique roof strata breaking movement. In this research, a comprehensive analysis of previous exploration data, subsequent mechanical testing, key stratum theory, natural equilibrium arch theory, and simulation tests and numerical simulations has been conducted to investigate the failure behavior of the overlying rock strata in the Yangjiacun Coal Mine. Specifically, the load‐bearing capacity of the key stratum structure in the bedrock and the morphological properties of the arch‐beam structure have been thoroughly examined. A mechanical model of the roof rock arch‐beam structure has been established, and an analytical formula for the limit size and stability criterion of the arch‐beam structure has been derived. The mining‐induced rock arch‐beam structure plays a crucial role in transferring the load of the upper strata to the surrounding goaf, thereby preventing subsidence and deformation of the overlying strata. However, the arch‐beam structure periodically experiences instability during the advancement of the working face, gradually progressing towards the upper layer until the main key stratum is breached and the arch‐beam structure collapses. Based on the characteristics of weathered rock and the arch‐beam failure model in the Yangjiacun Coal Mine, quantitative backfilling mining methods have been proposed to either compensate for the mining void created by coal extraction or limit the size of exposed key strata through strip mining, ensuring the stability of the R6 key stratum. This study represents a significant contribution to understanding the intricate failure behavior of overlying rock strata in coal mines and provides a valuable framework for the responsible and efficient extraction of coal resources in similar environments. Fault coal bursts is a common type of coal bursts in coal mining. With increases in mining depths and mining intensities, the occurrence frequency and disaster degree of coal bursts in fault‐controlled areas are increasing in severity. Therefore, in this article, the mechanism and control method of deep mining‐induced fault coal bursts are analysed on the No. 3402 longwall panel controlled by two faults in the Shandong Mine, China. Based on the microseismic monitoring data of the longwall panel, the fault activation process induced by mining can be divided into four stages. The second energy release and fault activation stages are risk stages of fault coal bursts. Using numerical simulation, the evolution laws of vertical stress, elastic strain energy in front of the longwall panel, and the ratio of shear stress to normal stress on fault plane are investigated. The phenomenon of a 'high elastic energy section‐low elastic energy section' coal pillar between faults is revealed, and the mechanism of coal pillar coal bursts induced by high elastic energy is discussed. Third, based on the above research results, coal burts risk areas of the longwall panel in the fault‐controlled area are determined. The method of 'coal seam‐roof‐floor coupling destressing with the reduction in mining speed' to control fault coal bursts is introduced. Field test results show that the method effectively destroys the integrity and bearing capacity of the coal seam, significantly reduces the energy storage capacity of the superposition area of mining stress and fault tectonic stress, so that the coal bursts risk of the coal seam in the fault control area is relieved, ensuring safe and efficient mining of the longwall panel. Coal burst has become one of the most serious hazards in longwall coal mines of many countries, and extensive studies have been conducted on the mechanism, prediction, and prevention of coal bursts. However, most of these studies focus on qualitative descriptions of burst environments and specific case analyses. Few studies have been carried out to explore knowledge through a number of past coal bursts in longwall mines. The main objective is to quantitatively analyze the current burst‐prone conditions in longwall coal mines of China and to summarize corresponding lessons. A database consisting of 54 major coal bursts was established. The characteristics and contributing factors of involved coal bursts were analyzed quantitatively, and high‐risk areas that are common in coal mines were then identified. Finally, some suggestions and lessons were proposed. This study may help for identifying controlling factors and high‐risk areas at a specific mine, and it might provide insights into the control of coal bursts in longwall coal mines. Superhigh‐water backfill mining can mitigate rockburst risks in rockburst‐prone deep coal mines and reduce pollution caused by traditional cemented paste backfill. In this mining method, the width of the rib pillar between two longwall panels is important to maintain roadway stability, prevent rockbursts and water seepage. To design the width of rib pillars, this study firstly established a T‐shaped overlying strata structure model and analyzed source of stress that caused deformation of the T‐shaped model. Based on this model, the abutment stress in the rib pillar was determined. Then, the criterion for overall burst instability of the rib pillar was proposed according to the derived abutment stress. The limit equilibrium theory was applied to obtain the pillar plasticity which can be used as the criterion for water‐seepage prevention. The proposed approach was used to design the width of a rib pillar in Yineng Coalmine located in Shandong Province, China. The analysis of the microseismic monitoring results and borehole drill cuttings show that the designed rib pillar with a width of 10 m was stable without water seepage during mining, indicating the width design method proposed in this study is effective. With the increase of mining depth, the occurrence mechanism of coal and gas outburst becomes more complex, and stress‐dominated outburst disaster has become one of the major safety problems in deep coal mines. Therefore, stress relief of coal seam has become an urgent technical demand for outburst prevention method in deep mines. In this study, based on zonal disintegration characteristics of deep surrounding rock, a regional strip outburst prevention method, called strip stress relief combined with gas extraction through stress‐relief floor roadway, was proposed, and relevant in‐site investigations were carried out in the Qujiang coal mine in China. Our results show that the zonal disintegration phenomenon occurs in the high‐stress surrounding rock at great depths, and induces the stress‐relief effect on the upper coal seam, in which the permeability and extraction radius of boreholes are increased greatly. The results of deformation and failure of surrounding rock of floor roadway show that from the surface to deep regions, fractured and nonfractured zones were alternatively distributed in the surrounding rock of deep floor roadways, the damage degree of surrounding rock was gradually weakened, and the width of fractured area was gradually reduced. The displacement of surrounding rock also presented the characteristics of alternative distribution of wave peak and trough. Moreover, the deformation and failure of surrounding rock presented a time‐dependent rheological behavior. In the stress‐relief zone, the coal seam permeability was enhanced significantly, with the maximum value being 43 times larger than that of the original coal seam. The effective gas extraction radius of the borehole was improved by 15%‐45%. During the driving period of coal roadways, the outburst risk prediction indexes K1 and S of the working face were lower than the critical value, and the driving speed of the coal roadway improved from 40 m per month to 100 m per month. This indicates that the proposed strip regional outburst prevention method can simultaneously reduce the ground stress and the gas content, and can effectively eliminate the outburst risk of coal roadway in deep mines. With the increase in cover depth of the coal seam, more and more rock bursts have occurred in deep coal roadways. The conventionally used passive preventive measures are not sufficient to reduce rock burst hazards in deep coal mines. To address this problem, this study firstly evaluated the abutment stress applied to the roadway surrounding rock by constructing an abutment‐stress‐transfer model after roadway excavation. Then, according to different positions of roadways in the coal seam, roadways are classified into three types: shallow‐buried roadway with hard surrounding coal/rock; deep‐buried roadway with soft surrounding coal/rock; and medium‐deep–buried roadway with medium‐hard surrounding coal/rock. Stress criterion and energy criterion for rock burst occurrence were proposed according to the three types of roadways. The rock bursts that occurred in stope 32 of Gucheng coal mine in China agree well with the calculation results. Finally, an active rock burst preventive approach (long borehole destress drilling) is suggested before intense supporting measures are adopted during roadway construction to prefracture the coal seam or competent strata. The efficiency of this method at different excavation stages is evaluated by examining borehole drill cuttings. Mining of the coal seam adjacent to the extracted coal panel is widely practiced in China to improve coal resource recovery rates, but the energy change associated with longwall mining may present a new risk to ground stability and gateroad failure. To understand the energy change effectively, a meticulously validated numerical model, built using FLAC3D software, incorporating a double‐yield model for the gob materials and a strain‐softening model for the coal/rock masses, was developed to investigate the energy redistribution in coal seams and barrier pillars during the process of mining the coal seam adjacent to the extracted coal panel. The model results showed that the closer the region was to the LW 5301 gob, the higher the location and magnitude of the peak strain energy density. Consequently, the risk of rockburst in coal seams was greater than that in barrier pillars. Along the coal seam strike, with increasing advancing distance from the setup room, the magnitude of the peak strain energy density gradually increased to 1.88‐2.78 times the premining energy level. In addition, along the coal seam dip, the maximum distance from the peak strain energy density to the edge of the coal seam was approximately 16‐28 m, which is greater than that in the barrier pillar. The principles of mining pressure in extra‐thick coal seams are different from those of medium‐thick and thick coal seams. Field investigation, laboratory test, and simulation analysis methods were used to study the correlation between the gob‐side entry (GSE) stability and coal pillar width during longwall top coal caving mining in extra‐thick coal seams. The test site is in Datong City, Shanxi Province, China. The mining pressure in N5209 tailgate with coal pillar of 30 m is severe based on the field investigations during the N5209 panel retreat. Global constitutive double‐yield and strain‐softening models were built to study the abutment pressures and plastic failure ranges of coal seams with different thicknesses and coal pillar widths. The simulation results show that the GSE with an 8‐m coal pillar is destressed and minimal GSE deformation occurs. In addition, the abutment stress in the coal pillar decreases with increasing coal seam thickness. The field tests indicate that the GSE with an 8‐m‐wide coal pillar is stable in extra‐thick coal seams. The abnormal emission of gas in coals is the main factor that induces serious gas disasters in coal mines. During the coal mining process, roof movement has important effects on the gas emission law and gas flow characteristics. In this study, an extremely thick coal seam under fully mechanized sublevel caving mining conditions from the Tashan coal mine in China was used as an example; the effect of roof weighting on gas emission in the goaf was studied. Then, the large roof weighting step and the small roof weighting step caused by the different thicknesses of lamprophyre breakage were used as the objects and a numerical simulation study on the gas flow characteristics in the goaf was carried out. The results indicate that the mining coal seams, the overlying adjacent unmined coal seams, and the goaf are the main contributors to the large gas emission capacity, and even situations exist where the gas concentration exceeds the limit in the working face. During roof weighting, the gas concentration and emission capacity in the return airway, upper corner, and high drainage roadway increase substantially. The results of the numerical analysis are in good agreement with the observed data, which indicates that it is effective to control the gas in coal seams by designing the location of high drainage roadway according to the mining characteristics of coal seam and the gas emission law. Based on the analysis of the monitoring data of surface displacement and internal multipoint displacement of coal pillars near three inclined strata roadways, which have similar burial depth and different surrounding rock conditions in a coal mine in the east China, the coal pillars' stress change was combined with discontinuous numerical simulation software to simulate the deformation process of one of the roadways. Field monitoring data and numerical simulation results show that when this working face roadway is dug, the coal pillar enters plastic state after being affected by multiple mining influence, but it can still maintain the basic stability of the roadway and control coal pillar deformation under the current widely used supporting method. With the shortening of the distance between the monitoring area and the working face, the vertical and horizontal stress in the coal pillar increase gradually, but the maximum value of the vertical stress decreases by 1.4 MPa, and deformation amount and velocity of the coal pillar show the characteristics of nonlinear rapid increase. The shape of the vertical stress core area in the coal pillar changed from oval to rectangle, and the width of the core area increased, and it moved 1 m to the goaf side. The Gaojialiang Coal Mine in Inner Mongolia in China was used as an example to investigate the process of chain pillar and gateroad failure in the lower coal seam under the effect of an irregular residual coal pillar in the upper close‐distance coal seam. The results indicated that after the longwall face in the lower coal seam retreated through the area under the large irregular residual coal pillar in the upper coal seam, the bearing area of the residual coal pillar decreased and the roof pressure continuously concentrated in the elastic core area of the residual coal pillar. Isolated triangular slab rock was formed above the triangular residual coal pillar, and the weight of the overlying strata was transferred downward through the triangular slab rock. When the chain pillar under the residual coal pillar was destroyed due to loading that exceeded its carrying capacity, the upper triangular slab rock rotated and sank, which resulted in the intensification of the concentrated stress in the solid rib of the gateroad in the lower coal seam. Based on the analysis, it is suggested that in the design of a longwall system, a gateroad under an isolated residual coal pillar in the upper coal seam should be avoided when mining in close‐distance coal seams. In China, one or several ultrathin soft coal sublayers are widely developed in the coal seam. Therefore, a method of using hydraulic flushing in soft sublayer to enhance the gas extraction in these particular coal seams is developed in this work. We first established a new fully coupled gas extraction model by combing gas diffusion, gas flow, and a permeability model that considers the effect of stress change and plastic failure. By adopting this model, the gas extraction enhancement mechanism and its main influence factors were studied using the numerical simulation method based on the engineering and geological background in the Yangquan No.5 coalmine. Thereafter, a hydraulic flushing equipment, which could move freely in the underground coalmine, was developed to apply the hydraulic flushing method in soft coal sublayers used in the 8402 working face. Its gas extraction effect was systematically investigated. Our simulation results match well with the field results, suggesting that our model is feasible. Meanwhile, after adopting this method, the gas extraction condition in this coalmine improves significantly. The borehole number decreases by 66.7%, while the gas extraction rate and gas extraction concentration increase by 1.33 times and 3 times, respectively. Moreover, during the coal mining process, the gas adsorption index of drilling cuttings, the quantity of drilling cuttings, and the CH4 concentration also decrease dramatically. With the increase of mining depth, the high gassy coal mine confronts with a variety of gas problems, such as gas concentration exceeding the limit in the working face, gas outburst and gas explosion. According to the situation of gas drainage in Qinshui Basin (South of Shanxi Province, China) and enlightened by horizontal directional drillings (HDD) and multi‐branched horizontal wells, a new gas drainage pattern that inverted π‐shape km borehole layout was proposed. Verified in Yuwu Coal Mine, the gas drainage data were standardized via the unified theory of standardization. It could dropped the coal seam gas content to 7.71 m3/t, and increased the gas drainage rate to 34.2%, which conformed to the Chinese regulation (<8 m3/t, >30%, respectively). This pattern has a significant effect on coal mines with a single seam, where protective seam mining technology was unsuitable to prevent gas outburst and gas explosion. A double pressure relief circle model of gateway and borehole was proposed. Combined with traditional gas drainage technology, a new gas drainage scheme came up with – inverted π shape km boreholes group model. The novel gas drainage scheme of inverted π‐shape km boreholes arrangement has the advantage of reducing gas drainage time and expanding coverage area.
