To enhance the energy efficiency of electrified vehicles (EVs), developing effective energy management strategies (EMS) for hybrid storage systems is essential. Predictive EMS (PEMS) that foresee future vehicle speeds have demonstrated substantial potential in boosting EMS performance. However, traditional PEMS models, employing a sequential approach of speed prediction followed by energy allocation, are hampered by cumulative errors. These errors from the initial speed predss this issue, this paper introduces a novel solution: the trainable integrated preiction negatively impact the efficiency of subsequent energy management. To addrediction and energy management strategy (TIP-EMS). Contrasting with conventional sequential PEMS, TIP-EMS features a dual-branch, integrated neural network, which is fully trainable. This network processes driving status inputs via attention layers, with one branch dedicated to energy management objectives using a reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm, and the other to vehicle speed prediction. Both branches are trained simultaneously, but post-training, only the RL branch is activated for energy management. Implemented with a soft actor-critic RL algorithm, TIP-EMS is applied to a fuel cell EV for optimized energy management. The validation involved training TIP-EMS using 27 driving profiles, which developed its prediction and energy management capabilities, followed by tests in untrained scenarios. The results show that TIP-EMS surpasses conventional sequential PEMS by up to 4.2% in scenarios where prediction accuracies are comparable, highlighting the efficacy of the trainable integrated mechanism. In addition, TIP-EMS exhibits superior energy conservation compared to non-predictive RL strategies. Lastly, TIP-EMS exhibits robustness to adjustments in the weight given to the prediction objective, further confirming its practical applicability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, four energy control strategies are proposed and analyzed for the standalone Renewable/Fuel Cell Hybrid Power Source (RES/FC HPS). The concept of the load following (LF) and Maximum Efficiency Point Tracking (MEPT) is used to control the fueling rates. A standalone RES/FC HPS uses at least one Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell (FC) as backup source. Photovoltaic (PV) array and wind turbines (WT) farm are used as RES and the surplus of energy during light load stages is stored in hydrogen tank via water electrolysis to fuel the PEMFC. Small-scale RESs and commercially available PEMFCs are interfaced to the common DC bus via power converters and then to the single-phase distribution grid through a voltage source inverter. RES/FC HPS seem to be an efficient alternative for supplying smart houses and isolated sites. This paper proposes a new supervision strategy of the Energy Management Unit (EMU) based on the LF control approach that assures a charge-sustaining (CS) mode for the Energy Storage System (ESS). So, the capacity of the batteries stack can be reduced at minimum if it is directly connected to the DC bus. The ultracapacitors stack compensates dynamically the power flow balance on the DC bus, regulating the DC voltage via a bidirectional buck-boost power converter. Thus, a semi-active hybrid topology is adopted for the ESS having the batteries stack. The MEPT loops ensure an optimized energy management of the RES/FC HPS. The LF strategy designed based on the power flow balance guarantees the load demand through the efficient management of the power flow from RES, FC and ESS, adapting FC energy production to load profile. The FC energy production is controlled via the fueling rates (one is controlled in the LF loop and the other is controlled in the MEPT loop) to maximize the energy consumption indicator: the ratio of the produced energy and the fuel consumed by the FC system during a load cycle. Thus, this paper evaluates the control performances of the four control topologies to fuel the FC stack during an variable RES and load profile. The MATLAB-Simulink® software package is used to model the RES/FC HPS and develop the four EMU strategies. The aim of the present paper is to evaluate the future consumption of natural gas in the Italian residential sector. The historical pattern of the consumption is reported and analyzed in order to identify the consumption drivers. It is found that natural gas consumption is influenced by gross domestic product per capita (GDP per capita), gas price and heating degree days (HDD); therefore an equation linking these parameters is estimated by means of a linear regression analysis. The GDP per capita, gas price and HDD short and long run elasticities of consumption have been estimated, showing that the larger influence is due to HDD (i.e. climatic factor). On the basis of the evolution of the explaining variables, a “business as usual” (BAU) trend of consumption is estimated, showing that, in 2030, natural gas consumption in the residential sector is expected to double that of 1990. Finally, the effect of energy saving measures in the sector of buildings heating is evaluated, showing that consumption might be reduced of ∼20% with respect to BAU consumption, if the 15% of flats and 5% of single houses are properly insulated. In this work, the transient performance of a hybrid desiccant vapor compression air conditioning system is numerically simulated for the ambient conditions of Beirut. The main feature of this hybrid system is that the regenerative heat needed by the desiccant wheel is partly supplied by the condenser dissipated heat while the rest is supplied by an auxiliary gas heater. The hybrid air conditioning system of the present study replaces a 23kW vapor compression unit for a typical office in Beirut characterized by a high latent load. The vapor compression subsystem size in the hybrid air conditioning system is reduced to 15kW at the peak load when the regeneration temperature was fixed at 75°C. Also the sensible heat ratio of the combined hybrid system increased from 0.47 to 0.73. Based on hour by hour simulation studies for a wide range of recorded ambient conditions of Beirut city, this paper predicts the annual energy consumption of the hybrid system in comparison with the conventional vapor compression system for the entire cooling season. The annual running costs savings for the hybrid system is 418.39USD for a gas cost price of 0.141USD/kg. The pay back period of the hybrid system is less than five years when the initial cost of the hybrid air conditioning system priced an additional 1712.00USD. Hence, for a 20-year life cycle, the life cycle savings of the hybrid air conditioning system are 4295.19USD. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper, “energy efficiency” studies, done in a big industrial facility’s pumps, are reported. For this purpose; the flow rate, pressure and temperature have been measured for each pump in different operating conditions and at maximum load. In addition, the electrical power drawn by the electric motor has been measured. The efficiencies of the existing pumps and electric motor have been calculated by using the measured data. Potential energy saving opportunities have been studied by taking into account the results of the calculations for each pump and electric motor. As a conclusion, improvements should be made each system. The required investment costs for these improvements have been determined, and simple payback periods have been calculated. The main energy saving opportunities result from: replacements of the existing low efficiency pumps, maintenance of the pumps whose efficiencies start to decline at certain range, replacements of high power electric motors with electric motors that have suitable power, usage of high efficiency electric motors and elimination of cavitation problems. Retrofitting old residential buildings with energy conservation measures leads to significant savings in energy consumption. Usually, energy savings are coupled with financial savings, however, this is difficult to achieve in countries where energy prices are highly subsidized. This paper addresses the situation in such countries and attempts to justify the cost of implementing effective retrofitting schemes. The analysis revealed that substantial savings could be achieved at the national level even if the implementation cost was fully borne by the government. The estimated annual consumption savings that can be achieved by retrofitting 42,403 old residential buildings residing in Kuwait were 3.25 million MW h. In 10 years, the government will earn $577 million (179 million KD) from energy savings revenue. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
