To improve the power generation efficiency of offshore wind turbines and address the problem of high fire monitoring and warning costs, we propose a data-driven fire warning method based on transfer learning for wind turbines in this paper. This paper processes wind turbine operation data in a SCADA system. It uses an extreme gradient-boosting tree (XGBoost) algorithm to build an offshore wind turbine unit fire warning model with a multiparameter prediction function. This paper selects some parameters from the dataset as input variables for the model, with average cabin temperature, average outdoor temperature, average cabin humidity, and average atmospheric humidity as output variables. This paper analyzes the distribution information of input and output variables and their correlation, analyzes the predicted difference, and then provides an early warning for wind turbine fires. This paper uses this fire warning model to transfer learning to different models of offshore wind turbines in the same wind farm to achieve fire warning. The experimental results show that the prediction performance of the multiparameter is accurate, with an average MAPE of 0.016 and an average RMSE of 0.795. It is better than the average MAPE (0.051) and the average RMSE (2.020) of the prediction performance of a backpropagation (BP) neural network, as well as the average MAPE (0.030) and the average RMSE (1.301) of the prediction performance of random forest. Simplified methods are often used for load estimations during the initial design of the foundations of offshore wind turbines (OWTs). However, the reliability of simplified methods for designing different OWTs needs to be studied. This paper provides a comparative study to evaluate the reliability of simplified approaches. The foundation loads are calculated for OWTs at the mudline level using a simplified approach and OpenFAST simulations and compared. Three OWTs, NREL 5 MW, DTU 10 MW, and IEA 15 MW, are used as reference models. An Extreme Turbulence Model wind load at a rated wind speed, combined with a 50-year Extreme Wave Height (EWH) and Extreme Operating Gust (EOG) wind load and a 1-year maximum wave height are used as the load combinations in this study. In addition, the extreme loads are calculated using both approaches for various metocean data from five different wind farms. Further, the pile penetration lengths calculated using the mudline loads via two methods are compared. The results show that the simplified method provides conservative results for the estimated loads compared to the OpenFAST results, where the extent of conservativism is studied. For example, the bending moment and shear force at the mudline using the simplified approach are 23% to 69% and 32% to 53% higher compared to the OpenFAST results, respectively. In addition, the results show that the simplified approach can be effectively used during the initial phases of monopile foundation design by using factors such as 1.5 and 2 for the shear force and bending moment, respectively. With the ongoing global drive towards renewable energy, several potential offshore wind energy lease areas worldwide have come into focus. This study aims to estimate the extreme wind and wave conditions across several newly designated offshore wind lease sites spanning six continents that are crucial for risk assessment and the design of offshore wind turbines. Firstly, the raw data of wind speeds and wave heights prevailing in these different lease areas were obtained. Following this, an in-depth extreme value analysis was performed over different return periods. Two principal methodologies were applied for this comparative study: the block-maxima and the peaks-over-threshold (POT) approaches. Various statistical techniques, including the Gumbel method of moments, Gumbel maximum likelihood, Gumbel least-squares, and the three-parameter GEV, were employed under the block-maxima approach to obtain the distribution parameters. The threshold for the POT approach was defined using the mean residual life method, and the distribution parameters were obtained using the maximum likelihood method. The Gumbel least-squares method emerged as the most conservative estimator of extreme values in the majority of cases, while the POT approach generally yielded lower extreme values compared to the block-maxima approach. However, the results from the POT approach showed large variations based on the selected threshold. Marine renewable sources can make a significant contribution to the development of electrical energy generation and can increase the power supply reliability of mineral complexes. The development of alternative energy sources is happening at a fast pace, and this is due to the improvement of technologies that allow for generating more energy and operating in more extreme conditions, with almost no negative effect on the environment. However, currently, renewable sources are not able to meet all the energy requirements of the platforms. Hence, a key point is to gradually introduce and develop new technologies. This article explores the advantages of combining power generation by wave converters and offshore wind turbines. It investigates the possibilities of improving the combined systems' reliabilities through justification of their mutual topology and accounting for the shadow effect from the wave installations. With the increasing construction of large-scale wind turbines in seismically active coastal areas, the survivability of these high-rated-power offshore wind turbines (OWTs) in marine and geological conditions becomes extremely important. Although research on the dynamic behaviors of OWTs under earthquakes has been conducted with consideration of the soil-structure interaction, the attention paid to the impact of earthquake-induced seabed liquefaction on OWTs supported by large-diameter monopiles remains limited. In view of this research gap, this study carries out dynamic analyses of a 10 MW OWT under combined wind, wave, and earthquake loadings. This study uses a pressure-dependent multisurface elastoplastic constitutive model to simulate the soil liquefaction phenomenon. The results indicate that the motion of the large-diameter monopile leads to more extensive soil liquefaction surrounding the monopile, specifically in the zone near the pile toe. Moreover, compared with earthquake loading alone, liquefaction becomes more severe under the coupled wind and earthquake loadings. Accordingly, the dynamic responses of the OWT are apparently amplified, which demonstrates the importance of considering the coupling loadings. Harmonic adaptability (HA) capability is required for large-scale onshore and offshore wind turbines (WTs) connected to the grid. To ensure that the distortion of the harmonic voltage at the grid access point generated by grid simulator is in accordance with the required value, this paper proposes an on-site HA remote testing method for offshore WTs to eliminate submarine cable effects. The deviation compensation method detects the integer harmonic voltage distortion based on instantaneous reactive power theory, and the deviation from the required value is compensated by series active power filter. In order to further reduce the capacity of the designed device, integer harmonics close to the resonant frequency are suppressed by the selective harmonic damping (SHD) method initially. Owing to the attenuation of extreme amplification, the deviation determining the equipment capacity is decreased correspondingly. As a small synthesized impedance working for the selected frequency can suppress the amplification significantly, a low power ratings design for the SHD method can be achieved, and undesired resonance can be avoided. Inspection and maintenance expenses cover a considerable part of the cost of energy from offshore wind turbines. Risk-based maintenance planning approaches are a powerful tool to optimize maintenance and inspection actions and decrease the total maintenance expenses. Risk-based planning is based on many input parameters, which are in reality often not completely known. This paper will assess the cost impact of this incomplete knowledge based on a case study following risk-based maintenance planning. The sensitivity study focuses on weather forecast uncertainties, incomplete knowledge about the needed repair time on the site as well as uncertainties about the operational range of the boat and helicopter used to access the broken wind turbine. The cost saving potential is estimated by running Crude Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, corrective and preventive (scheduled and condition-based) maintenance strategies are implemented. The considered case study focuses on a wind farm consisting of ten 6 MW turbines placed 30 km off the Danish North Sea coast. The results show that the weather forecast is the uncertainty source dominating the maintenance expenses increase when considering risk-based decision-making uncertainties. In 2007, the EU established challenging goals for all Member States with the aim of obtaining 20% of their energy consumption from renewables, and offshore wind is expected to be among the renewable energy sources contributing highly towards achieving this target. Currently wind turbines are designed for a 25-year service life with the possibility of operational extension. Extending their efficient operation and increasing the overall electricity production will significantly increase the return on investment (ROI) and decrease the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), considering that Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) will be distributed over a larger production output. The aim of this paper is to perform a detailed failure mode identification throughout the service life of offshore wind turbines and review the three most relevant end of life (EOL) scenarios: life extension, repowering and decommissioning. Life extension is considered the most desirable EOL scenario due to its profitability. It is believed that combining good inspection, operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies with the most up to date structural health monitoring and condition monitoring systems for detecting previously identified failure modes, will make life extension feasible. A reliable estimate of the wind potential in the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) is of great importance to justify the energetic viability of new offshore wind farms. The purpose of the study is to provide an additional tool for the prediction of the energy that a wind turbine would produces in the open sea from the usual way of measurements at sea, that is, when they are carried out with measuring masts, where the meteorological data are obtained at levels much lower than those of a wind turbine hub. For this, the variation in the wind speed with the height in the MABL is determined, based on the Monin–Obukhov similarity theory, according to the boundary conditions of the air–sea interface, where the input data for the Validation of the results are extracted from the German FINO 3 research platform during the years 2016, 2017, and 2018. It is applied to the production of electrical energy from a 6.0 MW commercial wind turbine, with the hub at 100 m above the sea surface. With the accelerating progression of global climate change, switching to renewable energy sources is inevitable. Wind energy is a fast-growing branch of this industry, and according to the 2021 Global Wind Report, this trend must continue in order to limit the increase in global average temperature. While onshore wind turbines still dominate and account for most recent growth, offshore wind turbines are becoming a promising alternative for geographical, power density-related or even aesthetic reasons. Offshore wind turbines are subjected to more complex loading conditions and proper foundation design is very challenging, however, this is crucial for ensuring and maintaining the structure's reliability. Soil dynamic tests are one of the bases for wind turbine foundation design. Technical regulations in many countries require such tests to be carried out in a Resonant Column (RC). In this study, a modification of the RC sensors and data acquisition system was introduced in order to conduct in-depth analysis of vibrating soil specimens. The new set of sensors contained five additional accelerometers (Analog Devices ADXL345) attached to the surface of a soil specimen that was subjected to dynamic loading. These accelerometers sent the data to a new data acquisition system, an ARM microcontroller with software developed by authors. The software was able to process test results synchronously with the original software of the RC device. Additionally, the load control system was supplemented with a current pulse generator, which makes it possible to observe the propagation of high-frequency mechanical waves in the tested materials. The modified dynamic testing equipment allowed for the measuring of accelerations and displacements at specific selected points located along the height of the sample, with sampling frequency more than three times higher than that offered by the sensors originally built into the RC device. As a result, some additional dynamic phenomena (i.e., disturbances in the uniformity of vibrations of non-cohesive materials, specimen–device contact imperfections) were observed in the tested soil specimens which remained undetected in standard RC test. Large scale offshore wind farms are relatively new infrastructures and are being deployed in regions prone to earthquakes. Offshore wind farms comprise of both offshore wind turbines (OWTs) and balance of plants (BOP) facilities, such as inter-array and export cables, grid connection etc. An OWT structure can be either grounded systems (rigidly anchored to the seabed) or floating systems (with tension legs or catenary cables). OWTs are dynamically-sensitive structures made of a long slender tower with a top-heavy mass, known as Nacelle, to which a heavy rotating mass (hub and blades) is attached. These structures, apart from the variable environmental wind and wave loads, may also be subjected to earthquake related hazards in seismic zones. The earthquake hazards that can affect offshore wind farm are fault displacement, seismic shaking, subsurface liquefaction, submarine landslides, tsunami effects and a combination thereof. Procedures for seismic designing OWTs are not explicitly mentioned in current codes of practice. The aim of the paper is to discuss the seismic related challenges in the analysis and design of offshore wind farms and wind turbine structures. Different types of grounded and floating systems are considered to evaluate the seismic related effects. However, emphasis is provided on Tension Leg Platform (TLP) type floating wind turbine. More accurate wind power prediction (WPP) is of great significance for the operation of electrical power systems, as offshore wind power penetration increases continuously. As the offshore wind turbines (OWT) are a key system in converting offshore wind power into electrical power, maintaining their condition plays a pivotal role in WPP. However, it is seldom considered in traditional WPP. This paper proposes an ultra-short term offshore WPP methodology based on the condition assessment (CA) of OWTs. Firstly, a modified fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (MFCE) based CA of the OWT is presented with a new defined deterioration of indicators calculated by the relative errors. Long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network is introduced to deal with the complicated interactions between the various monitoring data of an OWT and the dynamic marine environment. Then, with the classifications of the health conditions of the OWT, the historical operation data is classified accordingly. An OWT-condition based WPP with a backpropagation (BP) neural network is developed to deal with the non-linear mapping relations between the numerical weather prediction (NWP) information, health conditions of OWT, and the output power. During the past years, researchers have studied both numerically and experimentally multibody wave-wind combined energy structures supporting wind turbines and different types of Wave Energy Converters (WECs); rigid body hydrodynamic assumptions have been adopted so far for the development of their numerical models and the assessment of their produced power. In the present paper a numerical model that is based on the use of generalized modes addressing wave-structure interaction effects for the case of a multibody wave-wind combined structure is developed and presented. Afterwards, the developed numerical model is used for the assessment of the hydrodynamic response and the prediction of the produced power of different possible configurations of the updated WindWEC concept which consists of a spar supporting a wind turbine and one, two, three or four heaving type WEC buoys. The combined effects of the center-to-center distance of the WEC and spar platform, the number of the WECs and the grid configuration of spar and WECs on the hydrodynamic interaction between the different floating bodies, spar and WEC buoys, and consequently on their response and wave power production are examined for regular and irregular waves. Strong hydrodynamic interaction effects exist for small distance between spar and WECs that result to the decrease of the produced power. Power matrices of the updated WindWEC concept are presented for all examined configurations with different number of WECs. Moreover, the annual produced power of the updated WindWEC in two sites is estimated and presented. The generalized modes analysis presented in this paper is generic and can be used for the early stage assessment of wave-wind combined energy structures with low computational cost. Monopiles able to support very large offshore wind turbines are slender structures susceptible to nonlinear resonant phenomena. With the aim to better understand and model the wave-loading on these structures in very steep waves where ringing occurs and the numerical wave-loading models tend to lose validity, this study investigates the distinct influences of nonlinearities in the wave kinematics and in the hydrodynamic loading models. Six wave kinematics from linear to fully nonlinear are modelled in combination with four hydrodynamic loading models from three theories, assessing the effects of both types of nonlinearities and the wave conditions where each type has stronger influence. The main findings include that the nonlinearities in the wave kinematics have stronger influence in the intermediate water depth, while the choice of the hydrodynamic loading model has larger influence in deep water. Moreover, finite-depth FNV theory captures the loading in the widest range of wave and cylinder conditions. The areas of worst prediction by the numerical models were found to be the largest steepness and wave numbers for second harmonic, as well as the vicinity of the wave-breaking limit, especially for the third harmonic. The main cause is the non-monotonic growth of the experimental loading with increasing steepness due to flow separation, which leads to increasing numerical overpredictions since the numerical wave-loading models increase monotonically. A new type of offshore wind tension leg platform (TLP) connected with a series of buoys (Serbuoys-TLP) is proposed. With the consideration of coupling effect, derivations on the stiffness of the Serbuoys-TLP mooring lines are given. The complicated coupling motion characteristics of the TLP with buoys system are investigated by means of experiments and numerical analysis. The suppressive efficiency on the surge under some condition is nearly 68%, when the wave period is the common wave period of the East China Sea (6 s). Namely, the suppressive effect of series buoys on surge motion response of TLP is analyzed. Through several aspects of suppressive effect on the surge including wave properties, submerge volume and position of buoys are investigated. The modal analysis method is also adopted to interpret the coupled motion response. In the end, the responses of TLP and Serbuoys-TLP are simulated under actual sea conditions with the consideration of wind, wave and current. Based on the parametric study using the modal analysis combined with hydrodynamic analysis, the conclusion can be drawn that the surge of TLP can be effectively suppressed by the addition of a series of buoys in the Serbuoys-TLP. This study aims to improve the design of scour protection around offshore wind turbine monopiles, as well as future-proofing them against the impacts of climate change. A series of large-scale experiments have been performed in the context of the European HYDRALAB-PLUS PROTEUS (Protection of offshore wind turbine monopiles against scouring) project in the Fast Flow Facility in HR Wallingford. These experiments make use of state of the art optical and acoustic measurement techniques to assess the damage of scour protections under the combined action of waves and currents. These novel PROTEUS tests focus on the study of the grading of the scour protection material as a stabilizing parameter, which has never been done under the combined action of waves and currents at a large scale. Scale effects are reduced and, thus, design risks are minimized. Moreover, the generated data will support the development of future scour protection designs and the validation of numerical models used by researchers worldwide. The testing program objectives are: (i) to compare the performance of single-layer wide-graded material used against scouring with current design practices; (ii) to verify the stability of the scour protection designs under extreme flow conditions; (iii) to provide a benchmark dataset for scour protection stability at large scale; and (iv) to investigate the scale effects on scour protection stability. Jackets are the most common structures in the Adriatic Sea for extracting natural gas. These structural typologies are suitable for relative low water depths and flat sandy sea floors. Most of them have been built in the last 50 years. When the underground source finishes, these structures should be moved to another location or removed if they have reached their design life. Nevertheless, another solution might be considered: change the future working life of these platforms by involving renewable energy and transforming them into offshore wind towers. The present research proposal aims to investigate the possibility of converting actual structures for gas extraction into offshore platforms for wind turbine towers. This simplified analysis is useful for initial design phases and tender design, or generally when available information is limited. The model proposed is a new simplified tool used to study the structural analysis of the jacket structure, developed and summarized in 10 steps, firstly adopted to study the behavior of the oil and gas structure and then for the retrofitted wind tower configuration. As onshore wind energy has depleted, the utilization of offshore wind energy has gradually played an important role in globally meeting growing green energy demands. However, the cost of energy (COE) for offshore wind energy is very high compared to the onshore one. To minimize the COE, implementing optimal design of offshore turbines is an effective way, but the relevant studies are lacking. This study proposes a method to minimize the COE of offshore wind turbines, in which two design parameters, including the rated wind speed and rotor radius are optimally designed. Through this study, the relation among the COE and the two design parameters is explored. To this end, based on the power-coefficient power curve model, the annual energy production (AEP) model is designed as a function of the rated wind speed and the Weibull distribution parameters. On the other hand, the detailed cost model of offshore turbines developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is formulated as a function of the rated wind speed and the rotor radius. Then, the COE is formulated as the ratio of the total cost and the AEP. Following that, an iterative method is proposed to search the minimal COE which corresponds to the optimal rated wind speed and rotor radius. With single components weighing up to hundreds of tonnes and lifted to heights of approximately 100 m, offshore wind turbines can pose risks to personnel, assets, and the environment during installation and maintenance interventions. Guidelines and standards for health and safety in lifting operations exist; however, having people directly beneath the load is still common practice in offshore wind turbine installations. Concepts for human-free offshore lifting operations in the categories of guidance and control, connections, and assembly are studied in this work. This paper documents the process of applying Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), using experts' opinions for the importance of defined criteria obtained by conducting an industry survey, to benchmark the suitability of the concepts at two stages. Stage one streamlined possible options and stage two ranked the remaining suite of options after further development. The survey results showed that criteria such as 'reduction of risk', 'handling improvement' and 'reliability of operation' were most important. The most viable options, weighted by industry opinion, to remove personnel from areas of high risk are: Boom Lock and tag lines, a camera system with mechanical guidance, and automated bolt installation/fastening for seafastening.
