This paper presents a new algorithm to solve the optimal reconfiguration problem in distribution networks, using the algorithm called Improved Simulated Annealing combined with Hybrid Cooling (ISA-HC) and Selective Space Search, which leverages the capabilities of the Open Distribution System Simulator (OpenDSS) software and the selective space search concept to enhance performance and reduce the search space. The ISA-HC algorithm determines an adequate starting point for the temperature and initial solution according to the size of the system. For adequate cooling, a three-stage cooling approach was employed to achieve effective cooling, combining two methods widely used in the literature. Overall, the ISA-HC algorithm is a promising method for solving the optimal reconfiguration problem in distribution networks. The algorithm was tested on the systems of 5, 33, 69, and 94 buses and compared to other existing methods in the literature. Inertia is the measure of a power system's ability to resist power interference. The accurate estimation and prediction of inertia are crucial for the safe operation of the power system. To obtain the accurate power system inertia provided by generators, this paper proposes an estimation method considering the influence of frequency and voltage characteristics on the power deficit during transients. Specifically, the traditional swing equations-based inertia estimation model is improved by embedding linearized frequency and voltage factors. On this basis, the snake optimization algorithm is utilized to identify the power system inertia constant due to its strong global search ability and fast convergence speed. Power systems are naturally prone to numerous uncertainties. Power system functioning is inherently unpredictable, which makes the networks susceptible to instability. Rotor-angle instability is a critical problem that, if not effectively resolved, may result in a series of failures and perhaps cause blackouts (collapse). The issue of state feedback sliding mode control (SMC) for the excitation system is addressed in this work. Control is decentralized by splitting the global system into several subsystems. The effect of the rest of the system on a particular subsystem is considered a disturbance. The next step is to build the state feedback controller with the disturbance attenuation level in mind to guarantee the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. The algorithm for SMC design is introduced. It is predicated on choosing the sliding surface correctly using the invariant ellipsoid approach. According to the control architecture, the system motion in the sliding mode is guaranteed to only be minorly affected by mismatched disturbances in power systems. Furthermore, the proposed controllers are expressed in terms of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) using the Lyapunov theory. The provision of wireless and battery-free power is key to extending the applications of body-worn sensing electronics. This paper investigates the design of an IPT system for a body-worn scenario where the challenges include highly variable coupling, the requirement for the coil/s to be flexible, and close proximity to the body. Variable coupling results in a system that must operate with received powers ranging over orders of magnitude, whilst the use of flexible coils reduces the Q-factor and results in the potential for inductance variation. The human exposure considerations limit both the maximum field strengths that the wearer of a receiver coil might experience and the field strengths that a third party might be exposed to. In this paper, analytical models are used to identify key design variables and to guide the design synthesis of an IPT system for a wrist-worn medical sensor. Practical circuits to drive the transmit coil and to interface the receive coil with the load electronics are described. A prototype system is tested to validate the theoretical analysis, providing power greater than 2 mW to the sensor over a hemispherical region up to 250 mm in radius from the transmit coil. This paper introduces a novel hybrid filtering algorithm that leverages the advantages of Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) to address state estimation challenges in power systems. The primary objective is to integrate the benefits of PMU measurements into the design of traditional power system dynamic estimators. It is noteworthy that PMUs and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems typically operate at different sampling rates in power system estimation, necessitating synchronization during the filtering process. To address this issue, the paper employs a predictive interpolation method for SCADA measurements within the framework of the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm. This approach achieves more accurate estimates, closer to real observation data, by averaging the KL distribution. The algorithm is particularly well-suited for state estimation tasks in power systems that combine traditional and PMU measurements. Extensive simulations were conducted on the IEEE-14 and IEEE-30 test systems, and the results demonstrate that the fused estimator outperforms individual estimators in terms of estimation accuracy. The objective of a power system is to provide electricity to its customers as economically as possible with an acceptable level of reliability while safeguarding the environment. Power system reliability assessments are routinely performed to ensure adequate system resources and reliable operation using well-established methods, quantitative metrics, regulatory standards and compliance incentives in the jurisdictions of responsibilities. The alarming increase in the occurrence of extreme events, which are not included in routine reliability evaluation, has raised growing concerns due to the catastrophic impacts of these events on distribution systems. The potential economic losses due to prolonged and large-scale outages have motivated utility planners, operators and policy makers to acknowledge the importance of system resiliency against such events. Power system resiliency, however, lacks widely accepted modeling frameworks, standards, assessment methods and metrics. This paper presents a resilience assessment framework, along with quantifiable metrics to assess the resiliency of a distribution system against extreme winds, which are among the most common form of natural disasters affecting the North American region. The paper assesses the effectiveness of infrastructural and operational resilience enhancement strategies. This research emphasizes a meta-heuristic modified ant lion optimizer (MALO) optimization approach for the simultaneous utilization of DSTATCOM devices and distributed photovoltaic (PV) sources with network reconfiguration in a radial power distribution scheme. In a radial power distribution network with network reconfiguration, the majority of the research is based on constant power model analysis. However, it is noticed that load models have a substantial impact on the distributed PV sources and the DSTATCOM device's optimal size and position. The effect of the constant power (CP) and polynomial (ZIP) with load growth load models for the simultaneous insertion of distributed PV sources and DSTATCOM devices with network reconfiguration is examined in this research work for power system planning. The penetration levels of distributed PV sources considered for the investigation are 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The principal objective of this research is to reduce network total power losses, enhance the voltage magnitude profile at all buses, and reduce the overall operating cost while adhering to equality and inequality constraints. The proposed algorithm is verified on 118-node test systems. The investigation is carried out for planning network upgrading to a high-voltage distribution system (HVDS) on 317 nodes in the rural Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) radial distribution scheme. The simulated results obtained with this method are validated with the BAT algorithm and techniques available in the literature. It is observed that in the IEEE 118-bus system, via the simultaneous placement and sizing of PV sources considering a 25% penetration level and DSTATCOM devices during network reconfiguration, the total power loss reduction is 41.47% and 42.98% for the constant power model and ZIP with the load growth model. For the 317-bus system, the total power loss reduction observed for 11 kV is 49.77% and 59.34% for the constant power model and ZIP model with load growth. This study describes a laboratory model of a battery energy storage system (BESS) designed for testing algorithms aimed at reducing peak power consumption in railway traction substations. The system comprises a DC/DC converter and battery energy storage. This article details a laboratory model of a bidirectional buck-boost DC/DC converter, which is used to transfer energy between the battery energy storage and a DC line. It presents an analysis of DC/DC converter systems along with simulation studies. Furthermore, the results of laboratory tests on the DC/DC converter model are also provided. The control algorithm of the system in the traction substation is focused on reducing peak power, offering benefits such as lower charges for the railway operator due to the possibility of reducing contracted power requirements. From the perspective of the power grid, the reduction in power fluctuations and, consequently, voltage sags, is advantageous. This paper includes a description of a hardware simulator for verifying the system's control algorithms. The verification of the control algorithms was performed through experimental tests conducted on a laboratory model (a hardware simulator) of the system for dynamic load reduction in traction substations, on a power scale of 1:1000 (5.5 kW). This work presents an implementation of a Nested Decomposition Algorithm (NDA) applied to co-optimizing generation and transmission capacity expansion planning problems in power systems, including operational flexibility constraints. The proposed methodology has been gaining relevance in recent years, as it can efficiently solve large mixed-integer problems faster than the conventional extensive formulation (mixed-integer linear programming). Three case studies are conducted on two IEEE test power systems to evaluate the algorithm's performance and cut configuration. The first case study compares the performance between the NDA and the extensive formulation. The second case study compares the performance of each cut type, analyzing differences in simulation times and algorithm convergence. The third case study proposes a set of cut patterns based on the prior outcomes, whose performance and convergence are tested. Based on the simulation results, conclusions are drawn about the capability and performance of the NDA applied to the capacity expansion planning problem. Renewable energy sources provide an environmentally sustainable solution to meet growing energy demands. Consequently, photovoltaics (PV) is regarded as a promising form of green distributed generation (GDG). The penetration of PV-GDG into distribution networks (DNs) is crucial, presenting a significant opportunity to improve power grid quality and reduce power losses. In this study, a comprehensive investigation was conducted to determine the optimal location, number, and capacity of PV-GDG penetrations with DN to achieve these objectives. Therefore, employing the Newton–Raphson (NR) technique and particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach for case studies, the analysis focused on the IEEE 33 bus test system as a benchmark test and the Iraq–Baghdad DN at 11 kV and 0.416 kV as a real case study. The outcomes revealed that integrating 4 × 1 MW PV-GDG units in a centralized configuration at bus 13 of the 11 kV Rusafa DN in the first scenario significantly reduced power losses and alleviated voltage drops across the network. In contrast, the second scenario entailed the utilization of dispersed PV panels with a capacity of 10 kW installed on rooftops at all 400 consumer load points with a cumulative capacity of 4 MW. This approach exemplified the enhancement of DN performance by significantly maximizing the power loss reduction and minimizing the voltage drops across the buses, exceeding the results achieved in the first scenario. Testing and reliability assessment are crucial aspects when considering the thermal domain's influence on the overall system. Thermal interactions occur between all subsystems, and their separation can disrupt internal thermal interactions, altering temperature profiles. Evaluating functional system reliability requires accounting for the thermal domain's impact on temperature-dependent performance and thermal damage limits. However, testing faces challenges due to the lack of a suitable thermal coupling system capable of transferring thermal interactions by heat conduction between spatially separated subsystems. To address this issue, this paper introduces a thermal coupling system that focuses on the control system and its validation through experimental studies. Two scenarios were investigated: (I) the original assembly situation with direct heat transfer between two subsystems, and (II) a spatially separated scenario utilizing the thermal coupling system to establish heat transfer between the subsystems. The evaluation variables are the temperature curves and the deviations between the two scenarios. Two different tests with a different amount of heat flows are carried out. The thermal coupling system utilizes thermal actuators, specifically Peltier devices, to ensure a zero temperature difference between the original contact points. The control system employs both closed-loop and open-loop control to regulate the heat flow and achieve energy conservation between the spatially separated subsystems. The results demonstrate that the described thermal coupling system yields only slight deviations in temperature curves, indicating its applicability for early evaluation of functional system reliability. This research contributes to a better understanding of thermal interactions in complex systems and provides a valuable tool for enhancing overall system reliability through thermal testing and validation. This paper presents a methodology for static security assessment of transmission network planning using machine learning (ML). The objective is to accelerate the probabilistic risk assessment of the Hydro-Quebec (HQ) TransÉnergie transmission grid. The model takes the expected power supply and the status of the elements in a N − k contingency scenario as inputs. The output is the reliability metric Expecting Load Shedding Cost ( E L S C ). To train and test the regression model, stochastic data are performed, resulting in a set of N − k and k = 1 , 2 , 3 contingency scenarios used as inputs. Subsequently, the output is computed for each scenario by performing load shedding using an optimal power flow algorithm, with the objective function of minimizing E L S C . Experimental results on the well-known IEEE-39 bus test system and PEGASE-1354 system demonstrate the potential of the proposed methodology in generalizing E L S C during an N − k contingency. For up to k = 3 the coefficient of determination R 2 obtained was close to 98% for both case studies, achieving a speed-up of over four orders of magnitude with the use of a Multilayer Perceptron ( M L P ). Under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) schemes are the latest safety measures applied for safeguarding the integrity of the grid against abrupt frequency imbalances. The overall inertia of electrical power systems is expected to decrease with an increased penetration of renewable energy as well as elements connected through power electronic interfaces. However, voltage source converter-based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) links can provide virtual inertia through a control loop that allows for a reaction to occur at certain frequency fluctuations. This paper evaluates a UFLS scheme that considers the injection of virtual inertia through a VSC-HVDC link. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used to determine the location of the UFLS relays, the activation threshold of each stage, the delay time and the percentage of load shedding at each stage. It was found that the virtual inertia causes the nadir to delay and sometimes reach a greater depth. Furthermore, the implemented GA approximates the frequency response to the limits set with the constraints, reducing the load shedding but achieving a steeper nadir and a lower steady-state frequency level than traditional UFLS. The Isothermal Relaxation Current (IRC) method, as a non-destructive condition evaluation method based on insulation dielectric response, has been applied in the maintenance of power cables. However, the relaxation current is usually conducted through the outer shield of the high-voltage wire, which will introduce the extra depolarization current into the test circuit, affecting the accuracy of the test results. Furthermore, most IRC cable measurements are single-phase, which means depolarization currents are measured for each cable separately. In order to improve the measurement accuracy and efficiency of the IRC test, this paper proposes an improved IRC measurement method based on an isolated circuit, which discharges the interference current from the high-voltage insulated wire back to the earth and reduces the measurement error of depolarization current. At the same time, a three-phase IRC simultaneous test system is designed, and the control software is developed. Furthermore, by verifying the accuracy of the test system, the independence of the single-phase circuit and the consistency of the three-phase circuit is achieved. The effect of depolarization time and temperature on the relaxation current is then explored to determine the suitable parameter of the IRC test. Finally, the IRC system is used to evaluate the aging state of 10 kV cables with various aging conditions in the air and water for the longest 12 months. Critical parameters such as aging factor and time constants are compared to investigate the aging characteristics of tested cables with various aging conditions in the air and water. This study aimed to overcome the difficulty of conducting the horizontal-well cavity leaching test in the field and to investigate the long-term stability of the horizontal-well salt-cavity natural gas storage. The simulation test design is combined with the similarity theory to study the cavity expansion characteristics and the influence law of cavity leaching parameters. Through the design of a rubber hose connection, an integrated closed test system for multi-stage horizontal-well cavity leaching and brine drainage was built. The test system also realises the repeatable backward movement of the injection well during the test. A similarity simulation of the test design was carried out, and the test platform was constructed to carry out multi-stage horizontal-well leaching tests with a nitrogen cushion. In the horizontal-well leaching tests with a nitrogen cushion, the influence laws of the well spacing, flow rate and liquid level position on cavity expansion were investigated. Based on the morphological characteristics of the horizontal-well cavity, a numerical model of the horizontal-well salt cavity was developed, which reflects the real cavity morphology leached in the test. Conventional generation maintenance scheduling (GMS) is a solution to increase the reliability of power systems and minimize the operation and maintenance costs paid by generation companies (GenCos). Nonetheless, environmental aspects, such as zero carbon emissions, have attracted global attention, leading to emission costs being paid by electricity generators. Therefore, to obtain GMS plans that consider these factors, this paper proposes multi-objective GMS models to minimize operation, maintenance, and emission costs by using lexicographic optimization as a mathematical tool. A demand response program (DRP) is also adapted to decrease emission generation and operational expenditures. The probability that no generation unit (GU) fails unexpectedly and the average net reserve value, comprising the system reliability with and without considering the GU failure rate, are demonstrated. Numerical examples are implemented for the IEEE 24-bus reliability test system. A GMS algorithm presented in a published work is run and compared to verify the robustness of the proposed GMS models. Our results indicate that this paper provides comprehensive approaches to the multi-objective GMS problem focusing on operation, maintenance, carbon, and DRP costs in consideration of technical and environmental aspects. The randomness of the power supply side and the load side of comprehensive energy systems is increasingly prominent. It is very difficult to meet demand through traditional planning methods. To solve this problem, this paper explores the coordinated planning of a power system under uncertain characteristics using the multilinear Monte Carlo method. The uncertain characteristic model and probability density function of the system's power supply side and load side are established. Taking the optimal operating cost and the maximum wind power consumption as the system planning objectives, a system coordination planning scheme is established, and it is solved by multilinear Monte Carlo simulation. To alleviate the hassle of false data injection (FDI) attacks on distributed generators (DGs) in microgrids, a communication encryption-based distributed cooperative control is proposed in this paper. Compared to the conventional distributed control strategies, the proposed control scheme is simpler with much less complex evaluation mechanism by upgrading the secondary control to a second-order control based on the finite-time control theory while combining an encryption strategy. The proposed algorithm provides constant injections to eliminate the impact of FDI attacks based on a robust communication system. The effectiveness and high efficiency of the proposed control scheme is validated in an IEEE 34 Node Test Feeder system with six DGs as a microgrid cyber-physical system (CPS) under different FDI attacks. Power system transient stability simulation is of critical importance for utilities to assess dynamic security. Most of the commercially available tools use the traditional numerical integration method to simulate power system transient stability, which is computationally intensive and has low simulation speed. This makes it difficult to identify any insecure contingency before it happens. It is already proven that power system transient stability simulation achieved using the differential transformation method (DTM) requires less computational effort and has improved simulation speed, but it still requires further improvement regarding its accuracy and performance efficiency. This paper introduces a novel power system transient stability simulation method based on the adaptive step-size differential transformation method. Using the proposed method, the step size is varied based on the estimated local solution error at each time step. The accuracy and speed of the proposed simulation approach are investigated in comparison with the classical differential transformation method and the traditional numerical integration method using the IEEE 9 bus and 39 bus test systems. The simulation results reveal that the proposed method increases the simulation speed by 20–44.57% and 83–92% when compared with the classical DTM and traditional numerical-integration-based simulation methods, respectively. It is also proved that compared with the DTM-based simulation, the proposed method provides 45.27% to 58.85% and more than 90% accurate simulation results for IEEE 9 and IEEE 39 test systems, respectively. Therefore the proposed power system transient stability simulation method is faster and relatively more accurate and can be applied for online transient stability monitoring of power system networks. With the growing cyber-infrastructure of smart grids, the threat of cyber-attacks has intensified, posing an increased risk of compromised communication links. Of particular concern is the false data injection (FDI) attack, which has emerged as a highly dangerous cyber-attack targeting smart grids. This paper addresses the limitations of the variable dummy value model proposed in the authors previous work and presents a novel defense methodology called the nonlinear function-based variable dummy value model for the AC power flow network. The proposed model is evaluated using the IEEE 14-bus test system, demonstrating its effectiveness in detecting FDI attacks. It has been shown that previous detection techniques are unable to detect FDI attacks, whereas the proposed method is shown to be successful in the detection of such attacks, guaranteeing the security of the smart grid's measurement infrastructure. The pursuit of achieving total power network observability in smart grids using Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) carries a significant promise of real-time Wide-Area Monitoring, Protection, and Control (WAMPAC). PMU applications eliminate periodical measurements, thereby increasing accuracy through a high sampling rate of the measured power systems quantities. The high costs of installation of PMUs for total power system observability presents a challenge in the implementation of PMUs. This is due to the expensive costs of PMU devices. This has led to a prominent optimal PMU placement (OPP) problem that researchers tirelessly aim to solve by ensuring a complete power network observability while using the least installed PMU devices possible. In this paper, a novel Binary Firefly Algorithm (BFA) based on the node degree centrality scores of each bus is proposed to minimize PMU installations. The BFA solves the OPP problem in consideration of the effect of Zero Injection Buses (ZIBs) under normal operation and single PMU outage (SPO). The robustness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm is tested on IEEE-approved test systems and visualized with a force-directed technique on an undirected power network graph. The proposed BFA yields the same but better optimal PMU numbers, obtained by existing meta-heuristic optimization techniques found in the literature for each of the IEEE test cases, as well as highlighting the cost–benefit of having a robust system against single PMU loss while considering the ZIB effect for an improved system measurement availability. The importance of voltage quality is continuously increasing in electrical networks due to the rising manufacturing costs resulting from system faults and disturbances in utility dynamics. Researchers generally prefer reference-frame transformation-based methods to detect and mitigate these disturbances. However, these methods are adversely affected during unbalanced loading and disturbances due to their direct dependence on system dynamics (currents and voltages). In this study, a new and simple method based on Clarke transformation is proposed to detect disturbances and generate compensation signals for Power Quality Mitigation Devices. The aim is to address the deficiencies of existing approaches. Firstly, the Clarke transformation is introduced through the vector presentation. Then, the mathematical derivation of the proposed method is provided to enhance readers' understanding. The voltage sag detection and compensation signal extraction of its control algorithm for a Dynamic Voltage Restorer is illustrated graphically. Subsequently, a simple power system is created using a simulation program. Balanced and unbalanced voltage disturbances are applied to the test system to demonstrate the validation of the proposed method under distorted system conditions. This paper presents an alternative methodology to obtain the precise amount of shunt reactive power compensation in order to simultaneously reduce the total reactive power losses, improve the voltage profile and increase the loading margin of power systems. The amount of shunt reactive power compensation to be allocated is determined based on the curve of the total reactive power losses versus the voltage magnitude of a chosen bus. The best places for shunt reactive compensation are defined by the load bus participation factors of the critical mode provided by the static modal analysis. Simulation results employing shunt capacitors obtained with the new approach for the IEEE test systems (14, 57 and 300 buses) show that the procedure leads to a reduction in total reactive and active power losses and simultaneously improves the voltage profile and loading margin. DC electronic current transformer is the data source of the system control and protection device, so its measurement delay has always been concerned. In this paper, the DC current transformer is modelled equivalently and the key factors affecting the delay of shunt and the remote module are analyzed. A field test method for the delay characteristics of the DC electronic current transformer is proposed. Moreover, a complex multi-state large current generator and integrated test system are developed. On the basis of the IEC 60044-8 standard transmission protocol, the accuracy of standard signal acquisition with the shunt is better than 0.2%. The maximum output current of the established testing system is 600 A. The HCPB TBS (Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed Test Blanket System) is one of the two European TBSs that will be installed and tested in the ITER reactor. The use of flanged connections in the Helium Coolant System and the Tritium Extraction System of the HCPB TBS would make the remote maintenance operations easier and faster. Therefore, investigating the helium leakage from flanges becomes a fundamental step toward the control of the tritium activity in the Port Cell, as the helium flow will contain a variable but not negligible amount of tritium. The first set of experiments on helium leakages from flanged connections is described in this paper. The experiments were performed in a HeFUS3 facility, an eight-shaped helium loop designed to work at HCPB-TBS-relevant conditions. The facility can provide a helium mass flow rate in the range of 0.27–1.4 kg/s and can reach a pressure as high as 80 bar and a temperature up to 530 °C. Two types of gaskets were tested in this campaign: a spiral-wound gasket and an oval ring joint. The gasket/flange assemblies are described in detail in this paper, together with the test section that hosts them and the performed commissioning tests. The tests were carried out at 500 °C and 80 bar. In these conditions, the leak rate from the flange with the oval ring joint resulted in being, on average, 1.42·10−6 mbar∙L/s, while the leak rate from the flange with the spiral-wound gasket resulted in being, on average, 3.73·10−3 mbar∙L/s. The current study is focused on how varying injection pressure in the fuel supply system of multi-point injection systems can improve fuel atomization and injection jet range. The aim is to achieve a more efficient mix dosage, thus improving combustion and reducing exhaust emissions. In addition, it is intended to develop a characterization of the injection actuators, specifically the injectors, through a series of tests in which the injector pressure, engine speed and injection pulse are modified. To carry out these tests, a heuristic testing technique, like the empirical approach, was implemented, and a mobile device was used to capture the spray frames of the injectors. These data were then used to generate a correlation model between injection and spray angles, considering 0.5 bar pressure variation intervals within the established ranges. This approach made it possible to visualize and record the behavior of the spray in the injector, including the spray angle, the injected fuel flow rate and the working pressure during the operation process. Following the guidelines established in the proposed methodology, a significant result was obtained by varying the pressure at 5 bar and with an injection pulse of 2 ms. In this case, a flow reduction of 66 mL of the injected fluid was achieved, which corresponds to a significant reduction in fuel consumption. Additionally, a spray angle of 10.48° was observed with optimized atomization. These results were verified on vehicles with similar injection systems by testing on the GT-600-PRO injection test bench. In summary, this study shows that by varying the injection pressure and optimizing other parameters, it is possible to achieve a significant reduction in fuel consumption and improve fuel atomization in multipoint injection systems. This paper proposes a homotopy-based approach to solve the power flow problem (PFP) in islanded microgrid networks with droop-controlled distributed generation (DG) units. The technique is based on modifying an "easy" problem solution that evolves with the computation of intermediate results to the PFP solution of interest. These intermediate results require the solution of nonlinear equations through Newton–Raphson (NR) method. In favor of convergence, the intermediate solutions are close to each other, strengthening the convergence qualities of the technique for the solution of interest. The DG units are modeled with operational power limits and three types of droop-control strategies, while the loads are both magnitude voltage- and frequency-dependent. To evaluate the method performance, simulations are performed considering the proposed and classical NR methods, both departing from a flat start estimation. Tests are carried out in three test systems. Different load and DG unit scenarios are implemented for a 6-, 38-, and 69-bus test system. A base case is studied for all systems, while for the two larger models, a loading factor is used to simulate the load augmenting up to the maximum value. The results demonstrated that for the largest-size model system, only the homotopy-based approach could solve the PFP for stringent requirements such as the diversification of the load profile and hard loading operation point. Due to the lack of a standard nanosecond high-voltage pulse generator for sensor calibration, a high-stability nanosecond high-voltage pulse test system was developed in terms of circuit analysis, structural design, and performance test. By establishing the equivalent circuit model of the nanosecond pulse generator, the circuit component parameters of the five-stage Marx loop and the one-stage compression steepening unit were simulated. The influence of the action performance of the steepening gap on the characteristics of output nanosecond pulse was analyzed. The nanosecond pulse test system was established through the structural design of the nanosecond pulse-generating circuit, the development of a high-performance corona-stabilized switch, and the measurement of a fast-response resistance divider made of metal oxide thin-film resistors. The nanosecond pulse test system has the capability to output a double exponential nanosecond pulse voltages in the amplitude range of 10–60 kV with a rise time of 2.3 ± 0.5 ns and a half-peak time of 23 ± 5 ns. In addition, the output pulse voltage has a high consistency and stability in the full amplitude range. The maximum relative standard deviation of the peak value is 1.517%, and the relative standard uncertainty is less than 5‰. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent trend in hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) has increased the need for vehicle charging stations (VCS) in the distribution system. In this condition, the additional load in the system leads to an increase in power loss, reduction in voltage and reliability of the system. The drawbacks of introducing this additional load can be rectified by integrating distributed generation (DG) into the distribution system. In this paper, the ideal location for placing DG is identified through the voltage stability index. The power loss minimization objective function is formulated with all the required constraints to estimate the size of DG required for the distribution system. Moreover, loss of load probability is used as a reliability assessment technique, through which the system reliability is analyzed after assessing the impact of integrating VCS and DG. Simulations are carried out to compare the following cases: a system without VCS and DG, a system that has only VCS and a system that has both VCS and DG. The IEEE 12-bus and 33-bus test systems are considered. In the 12-bus system with both VCS and DG, the power loss is reduced by 56% when compared with the system with only VCS, while the net reliability is also improved. The reliability of the system is evaluated for a 24 h load variation. The proposed work provides an efficient tool to improve the reliability of the system with support from DG. This paper deals with the simulation and the experimental confirmation of electromagnetic events that could interfere with the successful formation of the restoration path during the power system restoration procedure. The studied phenomena are more relevant for bulk power systems characterized by a low short circuit power as the restoration backbone. In particular, two case studies have been simulated and analyzed: one related to a transformer energization during the formation of the restoration path, and the other one occurred after the de-energization of some transmission lines and one autotransformer belonging to the restoration path. From the simulation results, it emerged that such events are related to the resonant effects between the supplying transformer and the restored network. Such resonances could have negative effects on the restoration if they are not effectively managed. In order to evaluate the impact of such phenomena in real networks, the measurement recordings of on-field tests were compared with the simulation results. It is worth noting that the performed analyses require the knowledge of several parameters that were not always available in practice. Hence, the exact magnitude of the described resonant phenomena was not easy to foresee for the restoration of real networks. The performed comparison confirms the preliminary simulation results and highlights that detailed electromagnetic models are particularly important to support the power system restoration management, in particular the planning of recovery procedures. Based on the key module-lifting arm system, based on the principle of similarity and the hydrodynamic experimental method of a multi-dimension vibration test platform, an experimental platform for dismantling equipment is designed and built. Subsequently, the motion control model of the six-degrees-of-freedom platform is established. The three-ring control model of a servo electric cylinder is established, and the active heave compensation control of a servo electric cylinder is realized by combining position control theory. Based on the co-simulation of ADAMS and Simulink, the co-simulation system of the integrated dismantling equipment experimental platform is designed and built, and the simulation system is tested and verified. Finally, simulation and experimental verification are carried out based on the experimental platform and co-simulation system. The results show that the heave compensation rate reaches 58.3% in third-class sea conditions, 61.2% in fourth-class sea conditions, and 62.4% in fifth-class sea conditions. The integrated dismantling scheme of super large offshore oilfield facilities is feasible but, in order to ensure the safety and reliability of the operation, a heave compensation system needs to be added. The error between the simulation results and the experimental results is about 15%. Based on the analysis of external interference factors in the experiment, the error results are within a reasonable range, which proves that the experimental platform, the co-simulation system of the experimental platform, and the heave compensation strategy are accurate and effective. This study, for the first time in China, provides an effective experimental platform and co-simulation platform for the design and optimization of the integrated dismantling equipment of super large offshore oilfield facilities and lays a good research foundation for the construction and engineering demonstration of subsequent equipment. The integration of distributed energy resources, such as wind farms (WFs) and energy storage systems (ESSs), into distribution networks can lower the economic cost of power generation. However, it is essential to consider operational constraints, including loading margin, which ensures the security line contingency. This study aims to develop a comprehensive hourly distribution network reconfiguration (HDNR) model to minimize the economic cost for the power generation company. The model considers the optimal allocation of WFs and ESSs in terms of capacity and location, as well as the hourly status of the distribution network switches, based on security constraints. The proposed model is applied to an IEEE 33-bus distribution test system, and the capacities and locations of WFs and ESSs are determined. The impacts of security constraints on the optimal capacities and locations of WFs and ESSs, and the hourly configuration of the distribution network, are analyzed based on two case studies. In Case Study I, the model is solved with HDNR conditions, while Case Study II is solved without these restrictions, for comparison purposes. The results show that the optimal allocation of WFs and ESSs is affected by security constraints when HDNR is considered and highlight the crucial role of security constraints under contingency conditions, such as line outages. Load flow solutions refer to the steady-state stability of power systems and have a crucial role in the design and planning of slow-changing elements; e.g., in online tab changing actions, automatic generation control, over-excitation limiters and the power recovery characteristics of a load. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to show the connectivity between load flow analysis and long-term voltage stability using a generator model by introducing a novel voltage stability assessment based on the multi-machine dynamic model along with the load flow study for a power grid. The Euclidean distance (ED) was used to introduce a new voltage stability index based on the voltage phasor profile for real-time monitoring purposes. The effects of reactive power compensation, in addition to load-generation patterns and network topology changes in the system behavior, could be seen clearly on the voltage profiles of the buses. Thus, the increased values for the EDs of the buses' voltage amplitudes—from 0 to around 1.5 (p.u.)—implied that the system was approaching the voltage collapse point, corresponding to the Jacobian matrix singularity of the load flow equation. Moreover, the weakest load bus with respect to any system change was also identified. Indeed, the criticality of any network interruption was in direct proportion to this voltage stability index. This study performed a comparative analysis of five new meta-heuristic algorithms specifically adopted based on two general classifications; namely, nature-inspired, which includes artificial eco-system optimization (AEO), African vulture optimization algorithm (AVOA), gorilla troop optimization (GTO), and non-nature-inspired or based on mathematical and physics concepts, which includes gradient-based optimization (GBO) and Runge Kutta optimization (RUN) for optimal tuning of multi-machine power system stabilizers (PSSs). To achieve this aim, the algorithms were applied in the PSS design for a multi-machine smart power system. The PSS design was formulated as an optimization problem, and the eigenvalue-based objective function was adopted to improve the damping of electromechanical modes. The expressed objective function helped to determine the stabilizer parameters and enhanced the dynamic performance of the multi-machine power system. The performance of the algorithms in the PSS's design was evaluated using the Western System Coordinating Council (WSCC) multi-machine power test system. The results obtained were compared with each other. When compared to nature-inspired algorithms (AEO, AVOA, and GTO), non-nature-inspired algorithms (GBO and RUN) reduced low-frequency oscillations faster by improving the damping of electromechanical modes and providing a better convergence ratio and statistical performance. Utilization of active power filters (APFs) is the most efficient method to reduce harmonic pollution in distribution networks. Previous approaches utilized APFs in integrated control schemes based on broad data-gathering systems. Since a broad data-gathering system is not available in most practical distribution networks, previously proposed approaches may not readily be implemented. This paper presents the utilization of stand-alone controlled APFs (SACAPFs) in radial distribution networks. Utilizing APFs with a stand-alone control system decreases implementation costs and complexity by making them autonomous and independent of integrated control systems, which are complicated and expensive in practical applications. In this paper, a single SACAPF is modeled as a dependent current source where its injection current is equal in amplitude but opposite in phase compared to the harmonic content of the current passing through the point of common coupling (reference current). Due to the presence of both linear and nonlinear loads in the distribution network, the reference current changes after injection by SACAPF, so it is necessary to modify the injection current until reaching a constant value in the reference current. This is considered via an iterative procedure in the modeling scheme. Operation of multiple SACAPFs is handled using a backward procedure based on a priority list. Simulation results on an IEEE 18-bus test system show the proper operation of the stand-alone control systems for both single and multiple SACAPF implementation. Furthermore, optimal allocation of the proposed SACAPFs is performed in an IEEE 33-bus test network and a 9-bus test network, and the results are discussed and compared with the allocation of integrated control system APFs. Particle swarm optimisation (PSO) is one of the widely adopted meta-heuristic methods for solving real-life problems. Its practical utility can be further enhanced by improving its performance. In order to acheive this, academics have presented several variants of the original PSO over the past few years, including the quantum PSO (QPSO), bare-bones PSO (BB-PSO), hybrid PSO, fuzzy PSO, etc. In this paper, the performance of PSO is improved by proposing a fragmented swarm optimisation approach known as the PSOα. The PSOα is tested and compared with PSOs over 14 different benchmarking cost functions to validate its efficacy. The analysis is also carried out to see the impact of α on its performance. It is observed that the average value of the cost function over 50 simulations obtained using the fragmented swarm approach is lower than that obtained using the standard PSO in 12 out of 14 benchmark functions. Similarly, the fragmented approach outperforms the standard PSO in 13 out of 14 benchmark functions when compared with the best fitness value achieved out of 50 simulations. Finally, the proposed approach is applied to solve the well-known real-life optimisation problem of load frequency control (LFC) in power systems. A test system comprising both renewable and traditional power sources is considered to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed technique. A fractional order proportional-integral-differential (FOPID) controller is used, whose parameters are optimised using the proposed PSO for achieving the LFC. In this paper, we propose a photovoltaic emulator (PVE) composed of a series of connected power diodes with a single constant current source, rather than a power converter-based PVE. Accordingly, this enables readily verifying the operation because a the simple hardware structure and lack of a complex control algorithm. The proposed PVE can be intuitively implemented using the proposed selection criteria for the power diode and equivalent resistances. Since there is no feedback control based on complex analog/digital controls and sensors, the control response can be very fast. In addition, the proposed PVE can be easily integrated with a PV power system such as a power optimizer, to allow testing in a simple and flexible manner. Spice simulation was performed based on the electrical characteristics provided by the solar panel manufacturer, and this was utilized to validate the applied emulator circuit model, the Norton Equivalent Circuit. During the design process, the simulation helped to manufacture the PVE within error ranges satisfying the desired I–V and P–V curves, as well as the maximum power point (MPP). Partial shading could be easily implemented through use of the multiple series connection of individual PVEs, demonstrating local MPP and global MPP. A 400 W class PVE was built through appropriate power diode selection, with a thermal design to increase the output power. Moreover, its performance and feasibility were verified through intensive experiments. The measured efficiency, transient response time, and maximum transient error of the partial shading tests were 91%, 22 μs, and 5.8%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Longwall shearers' haulage system of the Eicotrack type, used most often nowadays, is presented in this article. Its disadvantages, causing problems with a correct operation of mechanized longwall shearer systems, are discussed. The concept of the innovative Flextrack, which should reduce the occurrence of the disadvantages mentioned above, is described. A course and research results, connected with rig tests of the Flextrack haulage system functionality, are presented. Measurement results of wear and stresses, obtained for the Eicotrack and Flextrack haulage systems, are compared and presented. Based on an analysis of the obtained results, a modified version of the Komtrack haulage system was suggested and manufactured. This haulage system was tested in the field conditions, similar to underground conditions in a mine coal longwall. The obtained results confirmed its full functionality and lack of problems experienced in the case of the Eicotrack and Flextrack systems. At present, the Komtrack system is tested in a coal longwall in Piast coal mine, where comparative tests with the Eicotrack system are conducted. Part of the widely discussed problem in electrical power systems is the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) due to its reliability and economical operation of electrical power systems. The ORPD is a complex and nonlinear optimization problem. The pathfinder algorithm (PFA) is a newly developed algorithm that inspires the group movement of prey with a leader called a pathfinder when hunting for food. The inertia weight is added to the PFA and is called an improved pathfinder algorithm (IPFA) to support the proper random work of the swarm to avoid the decrease in searchability of the PFA. The IPFA was proposed in this work to diminish the active power loss while improving the voltage profile. The IPFA was validated on the IEEE 30 and 118 bus systems along with particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the teaching–learning-based optimizer (TLBO). The proposed IPFA provides the best result as the losses of the IEEE 30 and 118 test systems were reduced to 16.035 and 115.048 MW from the initial base of 17.89 and 132.86 MW, respectively. The losses of PSO and the TLBO were 16.1568 and 16.1607 MW for the IEEE 30 bus system, respectively, while for the IEEE 118 bus system, the PSO provided 117.9129 MW and the TLBO provided 118.0524 MW. The two test systems' reduction percentages (%) were 10.37% and 13.41%, respectively. The results were compared with those of other algorithms in the literature, and the IPFA provided a superior result, thereby suggesting the superiority of IPFA methods in diminishing the power loss and improving the system's voltage profile. For data-driven dynamic stability assessment (DSA) in modern power grids, DSA models generally have to be learned from scratch when faced with new grids, resulting in high offline computational costs. To tackle this undesirable yet often overlooked problem, this work develops a light-weight framework for DSA-oriented stability knowledge transfer from off-the-shelf test systems to practical power grids. A scale-free system feature learner is proposed to characterize system-wide features of various systems in a unified manner. Given a real-world power grid for DSA, selective stability knowledge transfer is intelligently carried out by comparing system similarities between it and the available test systems. Afterward, DSA model fine-tuning is performed to make the transferred knowledge adapt well to practical DSA contexts. Distributed energy resources (DERs) based on renewable power, such as photovoltaic (PV), have been increasing worldwide. To support this growth, some technologies have been developed to increase the hosting capacity (HC) of distribution networks (DNs), such as the Soft Open Point (SOP), which can replace normally open switches in DNs with the advantage of allowing power and voltage control. The benefits of SOPs in terms of increasing distributed generation (DG) hosting capacity can be enhanced by network reconfiguration (NR). In this work, an optimization-based approach is proposed for placing SOP in DN with simultaneous NR; that is, the proposed algorithm consists of a promising alternative to previous works in the literature that deal with SOP placement and NR in an iteratively way or in a two-step procedure, considering that better results can be obtained by simultaneously handling both options, as shown in the introduced case studies. The optimization problem is modeled as nonlinear mixed-integer programming, and solved by a Multi-objective Artificial Immune System (MOAIS). The proposed algorithm is applied to a well-known medium-voltage (MV) test system that is widely used for the problem at hand, and the results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach to maximize the HC by optimizing the SOP installation site in the tested system. An important outcome is that the association of SOP planning and NR in a simultaneous manner tends to provide better quality solutions, where HC can overcome 400% for multiple SOPs. A comprehensive test system for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is designed and developed for monitoring and controlling the inlet and outlet parameters and safety issues of fuel cells. The data acquisition and output instruction rely on the connection between PLC (programmable logic controller) and OPC (object linking and embedding for process control). Based on Siemens S7-200 series PLC and PID (proportion integration differentiation) technology, the margin of error in relative humidity of inlet air is controlled at less than 0.7%. Furthermore, a hydrogen recycling system and an alarm module are introduced, considering the hydrogen or nitrogen solenoid valve power failure, cooling fan power failure, temperature anomaly, and hydrogen leakage. This developed test system is evaluated by the experimental investigation of PEMFC performance. The results show that the test system has very good test and control performances. At a cell temperature of 40 °C, enhanced performance in the polarization tests is depicted at a high humidification temperature of 60 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The battery management system (BMS) is a core component to ensure the efficient and safe operation of electric vehicles, and the practical evaluation of key BMS functions is thus of great importance. However, the testing of a BMS with actual battery packs suffers from a poor testing repeatability and a long status transition time due to the uncontrollable degradation of battery systems and testing environment variations. In this paper, to overcome this challenge, we propose an efficient BMS testing framework that uses virtual battery packs rather than actual ones, thus enabling a rapid and accurate evaluation of a BMSs key functions. A series-connected virtual battery pack model through leveraging Copula's method is formulated to capture the dynamics and inconsistency of individual batteries in the pack. The developed lithium iron phosphate model features low computational efforts and is experimentally validated with different dynamical profiles, implying a high-precision virtual battery pack that is capable of reproducing the actual one. Furthermore, this framework includes a closed-loop testing platform, which can provide the state-of-charge/state-of-power references and thus automatically test and evaluate the states of the battery packs estimated from the BMS. Particularly, we consider the initial polarization that often exists in the batteries during the operation to accurately calibrate the available state-of-power benchmark of battery packs in the real world. The performed BMS testing results using the proposed framework illustrate that the tested BMS cannot adapt to the varied operation conditions, thus leading to high state estimation errors, which may result in the over-charge/discharge or over-temperature of the batteries. PEM fuel cell systems face highly dynamic load profiles in automotive application. This work showcases the impact of media supply adaption, system architecture and test rig restrictions on the transient voltage response of an automotive fuel cell stack. Current step and load profile experiments were conducted on a system test rig, featuring automotive balance of plant components, and a short stack test bench. A time scale analysis allowed us to identify the predominant effect for the voltage response in each test case. The voltage response measured in the test cases was dominated either by air supply, membrane humidification or coolant temperature dynamics. This systematic comparison of different types of test setups highlights the importance of application-like system level testing as, in contrast to common experiments, different phenomena shape the electrical stack behavior. In addition to active power generation, photovoltaic inverters can be used to provide ancillary services to grids, including reactive power compensation. This paper proposes a metaheuristic approach based on particle swarm optimization for the allocation and sizing of photovoltaic inverters that perform the complementary functions of static synchronous compensator (PV-STATCOM) units. The objective of the aforementioned approach is to reduce the initial investment cost in the acquisition of PV-STATCOM units. The proposed methodology considers both the daily load curve and generation and is applied to a 33-bus test system. The methodology is validated based on an exhaustive search algorithm and tested over 1000 consecutive simulations for the same problem; consequently, the methodology produces low standard deviations and errors, indicating its robustness. The methodology demonstrates an improved grid voltage profile throughout the day when applied to the 33-bus test system. Furthermore, the photovoltaic inverter efficiently performs its main function of active power generation. In this paper, the role of soft open point (SOP) is investigated with and without system re-configuration (SR) in reducing overall system power losses and improving voltage profile, as well as the effect of increasing the number of SOPs connected to distribution systems under different scenarios using a proposed hybrid water cycle algorithm (HWCA). The HWCA is formulated to enhance the water cycle algorithm (WCA) search performance based on the genetic algorithm (GA) for a complex nonlinear problem with discrete and continuous variables represented in this paper by SOP installation and SR. The WCA is one of the most effective optimization algorithms, however, it may have difficulty striking a balance between exploration and exploitation due to the nature of the proposed nonlinear optimization problem, which mostly causes slow convergence and poor robustness. Consequently, the HWCA proposed in this paper is an efficient solution to improve the balance between exploration and exploitation, which in turn leads to improving the WCA's overall performance without the possibility of getting trapped in local minima. Several cases are studied and conducted on an IEEE 33-node and the IEEE 69-node to investigate the real benefit gained from using SOPs alone or simultaneously with the SR. Based on the obtained results, the proposed HWCA succeeds in enhancing the performance of the proposed test systems considerably in terms of loss reduction (e.g., 31.1–63.3% for IEEE 33-node and 55.7–82.1% for IEEE 69-node compared to the base case) and voltage profile when compared to the base case while maintaining acceptable voltage magnitudes in most cases. Furthermore, the superiority of the proposed method based on the HWCA is validated when compared with the GA and WCA separately for both test systems. The optimum penetration of distributed generations into the distribution grid provides several technical and economic benefits. However, the computational time required to solve the constrained optimization problems increases with the increasing network scale and may be too long for online implementations. This paper presents a parallel solution of a multi-objective distributed generation (DG) allocation and sizing problem to handle a large number of computations. The aim is to find the optimum number of processors in addition to energy loss and DG cost minimization. The proposed formulation is applied to a 33-bus test system, and the results are compared with themselves and with the base case operating conditions using the optimal values and three popular multi-objective optimization metrics. This paper proposes a new artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA)-based framework to investigate the optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem which is a critical problem in the capacity of power systems. This paper aims to improve the performance of power systems by minimizing two distinct objective functions namely active power loss in the transmission network and total voltage deviation at the load buses subjected to various constraints within multiobjective framework. The proposed AHA-based framework maps the inherent flight and foraging capabilities exhibited by hummingbirds in nature to determine the best settings for the control variables (i.e., voltages at generation buses, the tap positions of on-load tap-changing transformers (OLTCs) and the size of switchable shunt VAR compensators) to minimize the overall objective functions. A multiobjective optimal reactive power dispatch framework (MO-ORPD) considering renewable energy sources (RES) and load uncertainties is also proposed to minimize the individual objectives simultaneously. The competency and robustness of the proposed AHA-based framework is validated and tested on IEEE 14 bus and IEEE 39 bus test systems to solve the ORPD problem. Eventually, the results are compared with other well-known optimization techniques in the literature. Thanks to technological advances, the number of large-scale ESS applications is increasing in power systems. Therefore, the need for an ESS model to analyze the effect through simulation has also increased. In this study, an ESS analysis model was developed for transmission-level power-system analysis. The developed model has a relatively uncomplicated configuration compared to the previous model. The ESS model was developed in a form that can be exploited in the PSS®E, commercial power-system analysis program. The programming language FORTRAN was used for model development. A detailed process and necessary data for the model development are described. The operation of the developed ESS model was verified through simulation using two test systems. Improving the stability of power systems using FACT devices is an important and effective method. This paper uses a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) installed in a power system to smooth out inter-area oscillations. A meta-heuristic optimization method is proposed to design the supplementary damping controller and its installation control channel within the SSSC. In this method, two control channels, phase and magnitude have been investigated for installing a damping controller to improve maximum stability and resistance in different operating conditions. An effective control channel has been selected. The objective function considered in this optimization method is multi-objective, using the sum of weighted coefficients method. The first function aims to minimize the control gain of the damping controller to the reduction of control cost, and the second objective function moves the critical modes to improve stability. It is defined as the minimum phase within the design constraints of the controller. A hybrid of two well-known meta-heuristic methods, the genetic algorithm (GA) and grey wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm have been used to design this controller. The proposed method in this paper has been applied to develop a robust damping controller with an optimal control channel based on SSSC for two standard test systems of 4 and 50 IEEE machines. The results obtained from the analysis of eigenvalues and nonlinear simulation of the power system study show the improvement in the stability of the power system as well as the robust performance of the damping in the phase control channel.
