This research uses data analysis and mining techniques to determine the technological expansion of measurement systems in a public service company. It integrates technical, economic, geographic, and social variables into the analysis using machine learning techniques to discover patterns and relationships in large data sets. The fuzzy logic methodology is applied using the MATLAB programming tool "Fuzzy Logic" to build algorithms that allow for the correct selection of measurement, achieving greater efficiency and precision in the assignment of meter types. The results show that 98% of the metering systems in the significant part are electronic meters, with the "Residential BT" rate being the most extensive data set. Implementing the "fuzzy logic" technique recognizes that more than 60% of the meters are electronic, with the registration of active energy, reactive energy, and demand, allowing for greater control over the marketing variables of the distribution system operator. This research suggests that a future restructuring of electrical metering systems benefits the company and its users. By applying the analysis, a portfolio of viable projects for the replacement of measurement systems is obtained, and they are grouped into two clusters based on the total cost of the technological change. The increasing utilisation of the distribution grid caused by the ramp-up of electromobility and additional electrification can be eased with flexibility through smart and bidirectional charging use cases. Implementing market-oriented, grid-, and system-serving use cases must be tailored to the different national framework conditions, both in technical and regulatory terms. This paper sets out an evaluation methodology for assessing the implementation of smart and bidirectional charging use cases in different countries. Nine use cases are considered, and influencing factors are identified. The evaluation methodology and detailed analysis are applied to Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden. In every country, the implementation of vehicle-to-home use cases is possible. Realising market-oriented use cases is feasible in countries with a completed smart meter rollout and availability of tariffs with real-time pricing. Grid-serving and ancillary service use cases depend most on country-specific regulation, which is why no clear trend can be identified. Use cases that require direct remote controllability are the most distant from implementation. The transactive energy market (TEM) is a recent development in energy management that enables prosumers to trade directly, promising many environmental and economic benefits. Prosumer trading necessitates sharing information to facilitate transactions. Additionally, many TEMs propose using blockchains to manage auctions and store transactions. These facts introduce privacy concerns: consumption data, trading history, and other identifying information pose risks to users if leaked. Anonymity by trading under a pseudonym is commonly presented as a solution; however, this creates risks for market participants: scammed users will not have recourse, and users with innocent malfunctions may be banned from trading. We propose the Individually Linkable Pseudonymous Trading Scheme (ILPTS), which enables users to trade under a pseudonym, protecting their identity, while a smart contract monitors reputations and can temporarily deanonymize a user, ensuring market integrity. ILPTS was developed in stages. Examination of existing TEM literature was performed to identify desirable features. Analysis of cryptography literature was performed to identify techniques that may confer certain features. It was found through formal analysis that ILPTS adheres to identified design goals, improves upon existing solutions, and resists common attacks against TEMs. Future work includes software simulation and on-device implementation to further verify security and feasibility. Recent advancements in network-connected devices have led to a rapid increase in the deployment of smart devices and enhanced grid connectivity, resulting in a surge in data generation and expanded deployment to the edge of systems. Classic cloud computing infrastructures are increasingly challenged by the demands for large bandwidth, low latency, fast response speed, and strong security. Therefore, edge computing has emerged as a critical technology to address these challenges, gaining widespread adoption across various sectors. This paper introduces the advent and capabilities of edge computing, reviews its state-of-the-art architectural advancements, and explores its communication techniques. A comprehensive analysis of edge computing technologies is also presented. Furthermore, this paper highlights the transformative role of edge computing in various areas, particularly emphasizing its role in power systems. The transition to smart grids has served to transform traditional power systems into data-driven power systems. The purpose of this transition is to enable effective energy management and system reliability through an analysis that is centered on energy information. However, energy theft caused by vulnerabilities in the data collected from smart meters is emerging as a primary threat to the stability and profitability of power systems. Therefore, various methodologies have been proposed for energy theft detection (ETD), but many of them are challenging to use effectively due to the limitations of energy theft datasets. This paper provides a comprehensive review of ETD methods, highlighting the limitations of current datasets and technical approaches to improve training datasets and the ETD in smart grids. Furthermore, future research directions and open issues from the perspective of generative AI-based ETD are discussed, and the potential of generative AI in addressing dataset limitations and enhancing ETD robustness is emphasized. Dynamic energy contracts, offering hourly varying day-ahead prices for electricity, create opportunities for a residential Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to not just optimize the self-consumption of solar energy but also capitalize on price differences. This work examines the financial potential and impact on the self-consumption of a residential BESS that is controlled based on these dynamic energy prices for PV-equipped households in the Netherlands, where this novel type of contract is available. Currently, due to the Dutch Net Metering arrangement (NM) for PV panels, there is no financial incentive to increase self-consumption, but policy shifts are debated, affecting the potential profitability of a BESS. In the current situation, the recently proposed NM phase-out and the general case without NM are studied using linear programming to derive optimal control strategies for these scenarios. These are used to assess BESS profitability in the latter cases combined with 15 min smart meter data of 225 Dutch households to study variations in profitability between households. It follows that these variations are linked to annual electricity demand and feed-in pre-BESS-installation. A residential BESS that is controlled based on day-ahead prices is currently not generally profitable under any of these circumstances: Under NM, the maximum possible annual yield for a 5 kWh/3.68 kW BESS with day-ahead prices as in 2023 is EUR 190, while in the absence of NM, the annual yield per household ranges from EUR 93 to EUR 300. With the surge in population growth, the demand for electricity has escalated, necessitating efficient solutions to enhance the reliability and security of electrical systems. Smart grids, functioning as self-sufficient systems, offer a promising avenue by facilitating bi-directional communication between producers and consumers. Ensuring the stability and predictability of smart grid operations is paramount to evaluating their efficacy and usability. Machine learning emerges as a crucial tool for decision-making amidst fluctuating consumer demand and power supplies, thereby bolstering the stability and reliability of smart grids. This study explores the performance of various machine learning classifiers in predicting the stability of smart grid systems. Utilizing a smart grid dataset obtained from the University of California's machine learning repository, classifiers such as logistic regression (LR), XGBoost, linear support vector machine (Linear SVM), and SVM with radial basis function (SVM-RBF) were evaluated. Evaluation metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, were employed to assess classifier performance. The results demonstrate high accuracy across all models, with the Deep Neural Network (DNN) model achieving the highest accuracy of 99.5%. Additionally, LR, linear SVM, and SVM-RBF exhibited comparable accuracy levels of 98.9%, highlighting their efficacy in smart grid stability prediction. Behind the meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DERs), such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery energy storage systems (BESSs), and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructures, have experienced significant growth in residential locations. Accurate load forecasting is crucial for the efficient operation and management of these resources. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art technologies and models employed in the load forecasting process of BTM DERs in recent years. The review covers a wide range of models, from traditional approaches to machine learning (ML) algorithms, discussing their applicability. A rigorous validation process is essential to ensure the model's precision and reliability. Cross-validation techniques can be utilized to reduce overfitting risks, while using multiple evaluation metrics offers a comprehensive assessment of the model's predictive capabilities. Comparing the model's predictions with real-world data helps identify areas for improvement and further refinement. Additionally, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has recently announced its plan to collect electricity consumption data from identified U.S.-based crypto mining companies, which can exhibit abnormal energy consumption patterns due to rapid fluctuations. Hence, some real-world case studies have been presented that focus on irregular energy consumption patterns in residential buildings equipped with BTM DERs. These abnormal activities underscore the importance of implementing robust anomaly detection techniques to identify and address such deviations from typical energy usage profiles. One of the most important developments in the energy industry is the evolution of smart grids, which record minute details of voltage levels, energy usage, and other critical electrical variables through General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)-enabled meters. This phenomenon creates an extensive dataset for the optimization of the grid system. However, the minute-by-minute energy details recorded by GPRS meters are challenging to store and manage in physical storage resources (old techniques lead to a memory shortage). This study investigates using the distributed file system, replicated Gluster, as a reliable storage option for handling and protecting the enormous volumes of data produced by smart grid components. This study performs two essential tasks. (1) The storage of virtual data received from GPRS meters and load flow analysis of SynerGee Electric 4.0 software from the smart grid (we have extracted electrical data from 16 outgoing feeders, distributed lines, in this manuscript). (2) Tele-trafficking is performed to check the performance of replicated Gluster (RG) for virtual data (electrical data received from the smart grid) storage in terms of User Datagram Protocol (UDP), Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), data flow, and jitter delays. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve global decarbonisation, it is essential to find sustainable and renewable alternatives for electricity production. In this context, the development of distributed generation systems, with the use of thermodynamic and photovoltaic solar energy, wind energy and smart grids, is fundamental. ORC power plants are the most appropriate systems for low-grade thermal energy recovery and power conversion, combining solar energy with electricity production. The application of a micro-scale ORC plant, coupled with Parabolic Trough Collectors as a thermal source, can satisfy domestic user demand in terms of electrical and thermal power. In order to develop a micro-scale ORC plant, a commercial hermetic scroll compressor was tested as an expander with HFC-245fa working fluid. The tests required the construction of an experimental bench with monitoring and control sensors. The aim of this study is the description of the scroll performances to evaluate the application and develop optimization strategies. The maximum isentropic effectiveness is reached for an expansion ratio close to the volumetric expansion ratio of the scroll, and machine isentropic effectiveness presents small variations in a wide range of working conditions. The filling factor is always higher than one, due to leakage in the mechanical seals of the scroll or other inefficiencies. This study demonstrates that using a commercial scroll compressor as an expander within an ORC system represents a valid option for such applications, but it is necessary to improve the mechanical seals of the machine and utilize a dedicated control strategy to obtain the maximum isentropic effectiveness. Wi-Fi networks within the smart grid play a vital role in enabling communication between smart meters and data collectors. They are also frequently used in automation and metering, distribution control and monitoring, and distribution protection. However, a significant challenge arises from the uncertainty surrounding the genuine identity of data recipients. In this paper, we propose an efficient and novel covert channel that leverages the IEEE 802.11 DCF to transmit data requiring a high level of security. It is also the world's first covert channel supporting quality of service (QoS). Our protocol was implemented and tested in the ns-3 simulator, achieving very high-performance results. Its performance remains robust even under saturated network conditions with additional background traffic generated by other stations. The digitization of distribution power systems has revolutionized the way data are collected and analyzed. In this paper, the critical task of harnessing this information to identify irregularities and anomalies in electricity consumption is tackled. The focus is on detecting non-technical losses (NTLs) and energy theft within distribution networks. A comprehensive overview of the methodologies employed to uncover NTLs and energy theft is presented, leveraging measurements of electricity consumption. The most common scenarios and prevalent cases of anomalies and theft among consumers are identified. Additionally, statistical indicators tailored to specific anomalies are proposed. In this research paper, the practical implementation of numerous artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, including the artificial neural network (ANN), ANFIS, autoencoder neural network, and K-mean clustering, is highlighted. These algorithms play a central role in our research, and our primary objective is to showcase their effectiveness in identifying NTLs. Real-world data sourced directly from distribution networks are utilized. Additionally, we carefully assess how well statistical methods work and compare them to AI techniques by testing them with real data. The artificial neural network (ANN) accurately identifies various consumer types, exhibiting a frequency error of 7.62%. In contrast, the K-means algorithm shows a slightly higher frequency error of 9.26%, while the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) fails to detect the initial anomaly type, resulting in a frequency error of 11.11%. Our research suggests that AI can make finding irregularities in electricity consumption even more effective. The power system has undergone significant growth and faced considerable challenges in recent decades, marked by the surge in energy demand and advancements in smart grid technologies, including solar and wind energies, as well as the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. In response to these intricate challenges, this research focused on the development of a robust forecasting model for load generation. This precision forecasting is crucial for optimal planning, mitigating the adverse effects of PV systems, and reducing operational and maintenance costs. By addressing these key aspects, the goal is to enhance the overall resilience and efficiency of the power grid amidst the evolving landscape of energy and technological advancements. The authors propose a solution leveraging LSTM (long short-term memory) model for a forecasting horizon up to 168 hours. This approach incorporates combinations of K-means clustering, automated meter infrastructure (AMI) real-world PV load generation, weather data, and calculated solar positions to forecast the generation load at customer locations to achieve a 5.7% mean absolute error between the actual and the predicted generation load. Microgrids are local energy production and distribution networks that can operate independently when disconnected from the main power grid thanks to the integration of power generation systems, energy storage units and intelligent control systems. However, despite their advantages, the optimal energy management of real microgrids remains a subject that requires further investigation. Specifically, an effective management of microgrids requires managing a large number of electrical variables related to the power generated by the microgrid's power supplies, the power consumed by the loads and the aspects of power quality. This study analyzes how we can monitor different variables, such as the active power, reactive power, power factor, total harmonic distortion and frequency in the loads of a microgrid, using high-precision power meters. Our empirical study, conducted using a functional microgrid comprising a hybrid wind–solar power system and several household appliances, demonstrates the feasibility of using low-cost and high-performance power meters with IoT functionality to collect valuable power quality and energy consumption data that can be used to control the microgrid operation. Metering anomalies not only mean huge economic losses but also indicate the faults of equipment and power lines, especially within the substation. As a result, metering anomaly diagnosis is becoming one of the most important missions in smart grids. However, due to the insufficient and imbalanced anomaly cases, identifying the anomalies in smart meter data accurately and efficiently remains challenging. Existing methods usually employ few-shot learning models in computer vision directly, which requires the rich experience of human experts and sufficient abnormal cases for training. It blocks model generalizing to various application scenarios. To address these shortcomings, we propose a novel framework for metering anomaly diagnosis based on few-shot learning, named FSMAD. Firstly, we design a fault data injection model to emulate anomalies, so that no abnormal samples are required in the training phase. Secondly, we provide a learnable variable transformation to reveal inherent relationships among various smart meter data and help FSMAD extract more efficient features. Finally, the deeper metric network is equipped to support FSMAD in obtaining powerful comparison capability. The transactive energy market is an emerging development in energy economics built on advanced metering infrastructure. Data generated in this context is often required for market operations, while also being privacy sensitive. This dual concern has necessitated the development of various methods of obfuscation in order to maintain privacy while still facilitating operations. While data aggregation is a common approach in this context, many of the existing aggregation methods rely on additional network components or lack flexibility. In this paper, we introduce Cyclic Homomorphic Encryption Aggregation (CHEA), a secure aggregation protocol that eliminates the need for additional network components or complicated key distribution schemes, while providing additional capabilities compared to similar protocols. We validate our scheme with formal security analysis as well as a software simulation of a transactive energy network running the scheme. Results indicate that CHEA performs well in comparison to similar works, with minimal communication overheads. Additionally, CHEA retains all standard security properties held by other aggregation schemes, while improving flexibility and reducing infrastructural requirements. Our scheme operates on similar assumptions as other works, but current smart metering hardware lags in terms of processing power, making the scheme infeasible on the current generation of hardware. However, these capabilities should quickly advance to an accommodating state. With this in mind, and given the results, we believe CHEA is a strong candidate for aggregating transactive energy data. The increasing concern for environmental conservation has spurred government initiatives towards energy efficiency. One of the key research areas in this regard is demand response, particularly focusing on differential pricing initiatives such as Time-of-Use (ToU). Differential tariffs are typically designed based on mathematical or statistical models analyzing historical electricity price and consumption data. This study proposes a methodology for identifying time intervals suitable for implementing ToU energy tariffs, achieved by analyzing electric power demand variability to estimate demand flexibility potential. The methodology transforms consumption data into variation via the coefficient of variation and, then, employs k-means data analysis techniques and the a priori algorithm. Tested with real data from smart meters in the Colombian electrical system, the methodology successfully identified time intervals with potential for establishing ToU tariffs. Additionally, no direct relationship was found between external variables such as socioeconomic level, user type, climate, and consumption variability. Accurate line parameters are the basis for the optimal control and safety analysis of distribution networks. The lack of real-time monitoring equipment in grids has meant that data-driven identification methods have become the main tool to estimate line parameters. However, frequent network reconfigurations increase the uncertainty of distribution network topologies, creating challenges in the data-driven identification of line parameters. In this paper, a line parameter identification method compatible with an uncertain topology is proposed, which simplifies the model complexity of the joint identification of topology and line parameters by removing the unconnected branches through noise reduction. In order to improve the solving accuracy and efficiency of the identification model, a two-stage identification method is proposed. First, the initial values of the topology and line parameters are quickly obtained using a linear power flow model. Then, the identification results are modified iteratively based on the classical power flow model to achieve a more accurate estimation of the grid topology and line parameters. Finally, a simulation analysis based on IEEE 33- and 118-bus distribution systems demonstrated that the proposed method can effectively realize the estimation of topology and line parameters, and is robust with regard to both measurement errors and grid structures. A smart grid constitutes an electrical infrastructure that integrates communication technologies to optimize electricity production, distribution, and consumption. Within the smart grid, IEEE 802.11 networks play a crucial role in facilitating communication between smart meters and data collectors, operating within a shared transmission medium. However, a notable challenge arises due to the lack of certainty regarding the genuine identity of data recipients. In response, we present a solution—a novel covert channel leveraging the IEEE 802.11 backoff procedure—to transmit data that requires special protection. Implemented using the ns-3 simulator, our covert channel achieved a throughput of 140,000 bps when single covert station realized transmission in the wireless channel, and 880 bps in a populated environment characterized by high traffic volumes. This performance metric shows that our mechanism is better than other covert channels, where the performance in saturated conditions usually does not exceed several hundred bps. The objective of the presented paper is to verify economically justified levels of reactive energy compensation in the distribution network in the new market conditions, including the extensive use of smart metering systems, new types of load, or distributed generation. The proposed methodology is based on the minimization of annual costs of losses caused by the flow of reactive energy to the supplied loads through the equivalent resistance of the distribution system determined on the basis of statistical energy losses in this network. The costs of losses are compared to the costs of using compensating devices expressed by the levelized costs of reactive energy generation. The results are the relations describing the optimal annual average value of the tgφ factor to be maintained by customers to optimize the cost of loss of the distribution network caused by reactive energy flows. The dependence of the optimal tgφ value on the analyzed load and network parameters is also discussed. The resulting optimal tgφ levels should be considered in the tariffication process of services offered by distribution system operators to improve capacity and limit the costs of power network operation due to reactive energy transmission. Uncertainties related to the energy produced and consumed in smart grids, especially in microgrids, are among the major issues for both their design and optimal management. In that context, it is essential to have representative probabilistic scenarios of these environmental uncertainties. The intensive development and massive installation of smart meters will help to better characterize local energy consumption and production in the following years. However, models representing these variables over large timescales are essential for microgrid design. In this paper, we explore a simple method based on Markov chains capable of generating a large number of probabilistic production or consumption profiles from available historical measurements. We show that the developed approach can capture the main characteristics and statistical variability of real data on both short-term and long-term scales. Modern solutions for precise fault localisation in Low Voltage (LV) Distribution Networks (DNs) often rely on costly tools such as the micro-Phasor Measurement Unit (μ PMU), which is potentially impractical for the large number of nodes in LVDNs. This paper introduces a novel fault detection technique using a distribution network digital twin without the use of μ PMUs. The Digital Twin (DT) integrates data from Smart Meters (SMs) and network topology to create an accurate replica. In using SM voltage-magnitude readings, the pre-built twin compiles a database of fault scenarios and matches them with their unique voltage fingerprints. However, this SM-based voltage-only approach shows only a 70.7% accuracy in classifying fault type and location. Therefore, this research suggests using the cables' Currents Symmetrical Component (CSC). Since SMs do not provide direct current data, a Machine Learning (ML)-based regression method is proposed to estimate the cables' currents in the DT. Validation is performed on a 41-node LV distribution feeder in the Scottish network provided by the industry partner Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN). The results show that the current estimation regressor significantly improves fault localisation and identification accuracy to 95.77%. This validates the crucial role of a DT in distribution networks, thus enabling highly accurate fault detection when using SM voltage-only data, with further refinements being conducted through estimations of CSC. The proposed DT offers automated fault detection, thus enhancing customer connectivity and maintenance team dispatch efficiency without the need for additional expensive μ PMU on a densely-noded distribution network. Sustainable and smart manufacturing involves improving the efficiency and environmental sustainability of various manufacturing operations such as resource allocation, data collecting and monitoring, and process control. Recently, a lot of artificial intelligence and optimization applications based on smart grid systems have improved the energy usage efficiency in various manufacturing operations. Therefore, this survey collects recent works on applications of artificial intelligence and optimization for smart grids in smart manufacturing and analyzes their features, requirements, and challenges. In addition, potential trends and further challenges for the integration of smart grids with renewable energies for smart manufacturing, applications of 5G and B5G (beyond 5G) technologies in the SG system, and next-generation smart manufacturing systems are discussed to provide references for further research. The recent literature emphasizes the significance of occupants' behavior in shaping home energy demand. Several policies have been defined and tools and technologies have been developed to raise people's awareness and encourage energy-saving practices at home, but households' energy demand keeps rising. The thesis is that the fundamentals on this topic are still unclear and that available tools, strategies and measures should be approached in a more integrated way, as they are not now effective enough to encourage energy savings. How these could be successfully combined is still a major knowledge gap. Thus, this article proposes a critical review of the literature to discuss the potential role of end users in energy conservation at home, preparing the ground for truly effective engagement strategies and tools to encourage behavioral change. To that end, a systematic literature review is performed, including over 130 relevant articles. According to the critical interpretation of their content, after years of technologically driven strategies, the most promising approaches capable of overcoming the intention–action gap are those more user-centered. Energy is consumed in buildings through the use of various types of energy systems, which are controlled by the occupants via provided interfaces. The quality of this control should be verified to improve the efficiency of the systems and for the comfort of the occupants. In the case of residential buildings, due to privacy reasons, it is problematic to directly monitor human–building interactions using sensors installed in dwellings. However, data from increasingly common smart meters are easily available. In this paper, the potential use of data from heat meters is explored for the analysis of occupant interactions with space-heating (SH) systems. A pilot study is conducted based on a one-year set of daily data from 101 dwellings. First, the identification of an indoor temperature and a strategy for thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) adjustments for all the investigated dwellings is presented. Second, the performed analysis suggests that 96% of the households did not use the automatic adjustment function of the TRVs since adjustments using the on–off mode were the most common, which could be empirical evidence for Kempton's theory on mental models of home heating controls. The reasons for this could be the weakness of the TRV as an SH interface and the technical specificity of the analyzed SH (its supply temperature). Energy behaviours will play a key role in decarbonising the building sector but require the provision of tailored insights to assist occupants to reduce their energy use. Energy disaggregation has been proposed to provide such information on the appliance level without needing a smart meter plugged in to each load. However, the use of public datasets with pre-collected data employed for energy disaggregation is associated with limitations regarding its compatibility with random households, while gathering data on the ground still requires extensive, and hitherto under-deployed, equipment and time commitments. Going beyond these two approaches, here, we propose a novel data acquisition protocol based on multiplexing appliances' signals to create an artificial database for energy disaggregation implementations tailored to each household and dedicated to performing under conditions of time and equipment constraints, requiring that only one smart meter be used and for less than a day. In a case study of a Greek household, we train and compare four common algorithms based on the data gathered through this protocol and perform two tests: an out-of-sample test in the artificially multiplexed signal, and an external test to predict the household's appliances' operation based on the time series of a real total consumption signal. We find accurate monitoring of the operation and the power consumption level of high-power appliances, while in low-power appliances the operation is still found to be followed accurately but is also associated with some incorrect triggers. These insights attest to the efficacy of the protocol and its ability to produce meaningful tips for changing energy behaviours even under constraints, while in said conditions, we also find that long short-term memory neural networks consistently outperform all other algorithms, with decision trees closely following. State estimation for distribution systems faces the challenge of dealing with limited real-time measurements and historical data. This work describes a Bayesian state estimation approach tailored for practical implementation in different data availability scenarios, especially when both real-time and historical data are scarce. The approach leverages statistical correlations of the state variables from a twofold origin: (1) from the physical coupling through the grid and (2) from similar behavioral patterns of customers. We show how these correlations can be parameterized, especially when no historical time series data are available, and that accounting for these correlations yields substantial accuracy gains for state estimation and for the recognition of critical system states, i.e., states with voltage or current limit violations. In a case study, the approach is tested in a realistic European-type, medium-voltage grid. The method accurately recognizes critical system states with an aggregated true positive rate of 98%. Compared to widely used approaches that do not consider these correlations, the number of undetected true critical cases can be reduced by a factor of up to 9. Particularly in the case where no historical smart meter time series data is available, the recognition accuracy of critical system states is nearly as high as with full smart meter coverage. Smart microgrids are being increasingly deployed within the Department of Defense. The microgrid at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar is one such deployment that has fostered the integration of different technologies, including 5G and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). The objective of this paper is to develop an anomaly detection framework for the smart microgrid system at MCAS Miramar to enhance its cyber-resilience. We implement predictive analytics using machine learning to deal with cyber-uncertainties and threats within the microgrid environment. An autoencoder neural network is implemented to classify and identify specific cyber-attacks against this infrastructure. Both network traffic in the form of packet captures (PCAP) and time series data (from the AMI sensors) are considered. We train the autoencoder model on three traffic data sets: (1) Modbus TCP/IP PCAP data from the hardwired network apparatus of the smart microgrid, (2) experimentally generated 5G PCAP data that mimic traffic on the smart microgrid and (3) AMI smart meter sensor data provided by the Naval Facilities (NAVFAC) Engineering Systems Command. Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) and false data injection attacks (FDIA) are synthetically generated. In the smart grid, malicious consumers can hack their smart meters to report false power consumption readings to steal electricity. Developing a machine-learning based detector for identifying these readings is a challenge due to the unavailability of malicious datasets. Most of the existing works in the literature assume attacks to compute malicious data. These detectors are trained to identify these attacks, but they cannot identify new attacks, which creates a vulnerability. Very few papers in the literature tried to address this problem by investigating anomaly detectors trained solely on benign data, but they suffer from these limitations: (1) low detection accuracy and high false alarm; (2) the need for knowledge on the malicious data to compute good detection thresholds; and (3) they cannot capture the temporal correlations of the readings and do not address the class overlapping issue caused by some deceptive attacks. To address these limitations, this paper presents a deep support vector data description (DSVDD) based unsupervised detector for false data in smart grid. Time-series readings are transformed into images, and the detector is exclusively trained on benign images. Our experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of our detectors compared to existing approaches in the literature. Specifically, our proposed DSVDD-based schemes have exhibited improvements of 0.5% to 3% in terms of recall and 3% to 9% in terms of the Area Under the Curve (AUC) when compared to existing state-of-the-art detectors. Synchrophasor-driven smart grid applications aiming to orchestrate a diverse set of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) require extensive infrastructure including substantial instrumentation hardware, communication network extensions and controller installations for coordinated operation. This can make the overall installation expensive. Additionally, due to the computational complexity and data-intensive nature of the PDC functionality, most of the existing PDC implementations are on a purely software level, making them unsuitable for the real-time applications. To address this, the current paper proposes an alternate architecture for the real-time synchrophasor-based control of DER applications (e.g., microgrids) incorporating a centralized synchronization hardware designed to replace aggregation Phasor Data Concentrators (PDCs) and supplementary control algorithms into a singular reconfigurable hardware. This particular hardware is termed a Synchrophasor Synchronization Gateway and Controller (SSGC). The robustness of the proposed architecture is tested by using real-time (RT) Controller Hardware-In-the-Loop (CHIL) simulation-based experiments by manipulating the communication network that connects the SSGC with multiple Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) streams broadcasting data through the IEEE C37.118.2 protocol in real time. These PMU streams were generated by using a real-time microgrid model running on a Typhoon HIL 604 simulator. To manipulate the communication interface between the proposed SSGC hardware and the PMU streams, a configurable Wide Area Network (WAN) emulator and communication network impairment appliance deployed in the Candela Technologies CT910 external hardware was utilized. The real-time control system was expanded by incorporating a low-pass filter to eliminate the potential overswitching of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The proposed architecture demonstrated a reliable performance under ideal to moderately tampered communication networks. In the context of the growing emphasis on energy conservation and carbon reduction, the widespread deployment of smart meters in residential and commercial buildings is instrumental in promoting electricity savings. In Taiwan, local governments are actively promoting the installation of smart meters, empowering residents to monitor their electricity consumption and detect abnormal usage patterns, thus mitigating the risk of electrical fires. This safety-oriented approach is a significant driver behind the adoption of smart meters. However, the analysis of the substantial data generated by these meters necessitates pre-processing to address anomalies. Presently, these data primarily serve billing calculations or the extraction of power-saving patterns through big data analytics. To address these challenges, this study proposes a comprehensive approach that integrates a relational database for storing electricity consumption data with knowledge graphs. This integrated method effectively addresses data scarcity at various time scales and identifies prolonged periods of excessive electricity consumption, enabling timely alerts to residents for specific appliance shutdowns. Deep learning techniques are employed to analyze historical consumption data and real-time smart meter readings, with the goal of identifying and mitigating hazardous usage behavior, consequently reducing the risk of electrical fires. Nearly 60% of commercial customers are connected to a low-voltage network in Poland with a contractual capacity of more than 40 kW and are assigned a fixed tariff with flat prices for the whole year, no matter the usage volume. With smart meters, more data about how businesses use energy are becoming available to both energy providers and customers. This enables innovation in the structure and type of tariffs on offer in the energy market. Customers can explore their usage patterns to choose the most suitable tariff to benefit from lower prices and thus generate savings. In this paper, we analyzed whether customers' electricity usage matched their optimal tariff and further investigated which of them could benefit or lose from switching the tariff based on the real dataset with the hourly energy readings of 1212 commercial entities in Poland recorded between 2016 and 2019. Three modelling approaches, i.e., the k-nearest neighbors, classification tree and random forest, were tested for optimal tariff classification, while for the benchmark, we used a simple approach, in which the tariff was proposed based on the customers' previous electricity usage. The main findings from the research are threefold: (1) out of all the analyzed entities, on average, 76% of them could have benefited from the tariff switching, which suggests that customers may not be aware of the tariff change benefits, or they had chosen a tariff plan that was not tailored to them; (2) a random forest model offers a viable approach to accurate tariff classification; (3) the policy implication from the research is the need to increase the customers' awareness about the tariffs and propose reliable tools for selecting the optimal tariff. This paper presents an integrated methodology for decision making in smart grid investments that assesses the investment plans of stakeholders in local energy communities (LECs). Considering the energy flow exchanges of the LECs and interpreting them in terms of technical benefits and costs, this methodology indicates the most sustainable and profitable solution covering the LEC energy transition plans. A set of specialized tools capturing the energy, environmental, financial, and social impacts are integrated under a common platform called the IANOS Energy Planning and Transition (IEPT) suite. The tools evaluate a set of well-defined key performance indicators that are gathered using a cost–benefit analysis (CBA) module offering multilateral assessment. By upgrading the functionalities of specialized tools, i.e., the energy modeler INTEMA, the life cycle assessment and costing tool VERIFY, and the smart grid-oriented CBA tool, the IEPT suite evaluates the viability of different smart grid investment scenarios from a multi-dimensional perspective at the LEC level. The functionalities of the proposed suite are validated in the LEC of Nisyros island, Greece, where three smart grid-based investment scenarios of different self-consumption levels are evaluated and ranked in terms of benefits and profitability. The results highlight that for a 20-year horizon of analysis, the investment scenario where a 50% self-consumption target is achieved was more financially viable compared to the 80% and 95% scenarios, achieving values of BCR and NPV equal to EUR 2.12 and EUR 4,400,000, respectively. Mini-grids need to imitate the transition path of a traditional grid to maintain their position as a sustainable energy access alternative, while aligning with the objectives of the seventh Sustainable Development Goal. One such strategy is implementing smart-metering solutions to improve business viability and remote monitoring of distributed mini-grid assets. However, selecting smart meters presents a significant challenge for mini-grid operators, primarily due to the installation costs involved and the complexities associated with operating mini-grids in rural areas. Against this backdrop, the current case study' demonstrates the utility of multi-criteria decision aids, such as stochastic multi-criteria acceptability analysis (SMAA), to assist mini-grid operators in making informed decisions concerning smart-meter selection. In addition, practitioners' narratives elucidate how implementing smart metering can function as part of mini-grid operations in rural areas. The availability of empirical energy data from Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)—which includes household smart meters—has enabled residential energy demand to be characterised in different forms. This paper first presents a literature review of applications of measured electricity, gas, and heat consumption data at a range of temporal resolutions, which have been used to characterise and develop an understanding of residential energy demand. User groups, sectors, and policy areas that can benefit from the research are identified. Multiple residential energy demand datasets have been collected in the UK that enable this characterisation. This paper has identified twenty-three UK datasets that are accessible for use by researchers, either through open access or defined processes, and presents them in an inventory containing details about the energy data type, temporal and spatial resolution, and presence of contextual physical and socio-demographic information. Thirteen applications of data relating to characterising residential energy demand have been outlined in the literature review, and the suitability of each of the twenty-three datasets was mapped to the thirteen applications. It is found that many datasets contain complementary contextual data that broaden their usefulness and that multiple datasets are suitable for several applications beyond their original project objectives, adding value to the original data collection. The smart grid (SG) ensures the flow of electricity and data between suppliers and consumers. The reliability and security of data also play an important role in the overall management. This can be achieved with the help of adaptive energy management (AEM). This research aims to highlight the big data issues and challenges faced by AEM employed in SG networks. In this paper, we will discuss the most commonly used data processing methods and will give a detailed comparison between the outputs of some of these methods. We consider a dataset of 50,000 instances from consumer smart meters and 10,000 attributes from previous fault data and 12 attributes. The comparison will tell us about the reliability, stability, and accuracy of the system by comparing the output of the various graphical plots of these methods. The accuracy percentage of the linear regression method is 98%; for the logistic regression method, it is 96%; and for K-Nearest Neighbors, it is 92%. The results show that the linear regression method applied gives the highest accuracy compared to logistic regression and K-Nearest Neighbors methods for prediction analysis of big data in SGs. Greater variation in electrical load should be expected in the future due to the increasing penetration of electric vehicles, photovoltaics, storage, and other technologies. The adoption of these technologies will vary by area and time, and if not identified early and managed by electric utilities, these new customer needs could result in power quality, reliability, and protection issues. Furthermore, comprehensively studying the uncertainty and variation in the load on circuit elements over periods of several months has the potential to increase the efficient use of traditional resources, non-wires alternatives, and microgrids to better serve customers. To increase the understanding of electrical load, the authors propose a multistep, attention-focused, and efficient machine learning process to provide probabilistic forecasts of distribution transformer load for several months into the future. A distribution grid is the dispatching part of the power grid where electricity is finally utilized by the end users. In the electricity industry, automation habitually means the smart grid. The SG is a broad topic with different elements working towards grid optimization. One best way of optimizing a power grid is to balance the electricity supply and usage. This paper proposes an automated approach and presents a coordinative concept to develop a real-time interfacing network for demand-side management mitigations. The SDNS network concept uses a master–slave metering hierarchy to coordinate the devices between the utility and the end users by regulating the electrons' movement from the utility to the consumer's side. This concept was tested on MATLAB and a prototype. The results proved the efficiency of this design in demand-side management. The most common methods to detect non-technical losses involve Deep Learning-based classifiers and samples of consumption remotely collected several times a day through Smart Meters (SMs) and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). This approach requires a huge amount of data, and training is computationally expensive. However, most energy meters in emerging countries such as Brazil are technologically limited. These devices can measure only the accumulated energy consumption monthly. This work focuses on detecting energy theft in scenarios without AMI and SM. We propose a strategy called HyMOTree intended for the hyperparameter tuning of tree-based algorithms using different multiobjective optimization strategies. Our main contributions are associating different multiobjective optimization strategies to improve the classifier performance and analyzing the model's performance given different probability cutoff operations. HyMOTree combines NSGA-II and GDE-3 with Decision Tree, Random Forest, and XGboost. A dataset provided by a Brazilian power distribution company CPFL ENERGIA™ was used, and the SMOTE technique was applied to balance the data. The results show that HyMOTree performed better than the random search method, and then, the combination between Random Forest and NSGA-II achieved 0.95 and 0.93 for Precision and F1-Score, respectively. The rising interest in the security of network infrastructure, including edge devices, the Internet of Things, and smart grids, has led to the development of numerous machine learning-based approaches that promise improvement to existing threat detection solutions. Among the popular methods to ensuring cybersecurity is the use of data science techniques and big data to analyse online threats and current trends. One important factor is that these techniques can identify trends, attacks, and events that are invisible or not easily detectable even to a network administrator. The goal of this paper is to suggest the optimal method for feature selection and to find the most suitable method to compare results between different studies in the context of imbalance datasets and threat detection in ICT. Furthermore, as part of this paper, the authors present the state of the data science discipline in the context of the ICT industry, in particular, its applications and the most frequently employed methods of data analysis. Based on these observations, the most common errors and shortcomings in adopting best practices in data analysis have been identified. The improper usage of imbalanced datasets is one of the most frequently occurring issues. This characteristic of data is an indispensable aspect in the case of the detection of infrequent events. Even though eco-efficiency (EE) is already applied to various energy systems, so far, no study investigates in detail the hourly, marginal and seasonal impacts of a decentralized energy system. This study assesses the hourly EE of the Research Park Zellik (RPZ), located in the Brussels metropolitan area for 2022 composed of photovoltaic installations, wind turbines and batteries. A cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment (LCA) to identify the carbon footprint (CF) and a levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) calculation is conducted. An existing design optimization framework is applied to the RPZ. Consumption data are obtained from smart meters of five consumers at the RPZ on a one-hour time resolution for 2022 and upscaled based on the annual consumption of the RPZ. As the EE is presented as the sum of the CF and the LCOE, a lower EE corresponds to an economically and environmentally preferable energy system. In a comparative framework, the developed method is applied to two different case studies, namely, (i) to an energy system in Vega de Valcerce in Spain and (ii) to an energy system in Bèli Bartoka in Poland. The average EE of the RPZ energy system in 2022 is 0.15 per kWh, while the average EE of the Polish and Spanish energy systems are 1.48 and 0.36 per kWh, respectively. When analyzing four selected weeks, both the LCOE and CF of the RPZ energy system are driven by the consumption of the Belgian electricity grid mix. In contrast, due to the very low LCOE and CF of the renewable energy sources, in particular wind turbines, the RPZ energy system's EE benefits and lies below the EE of the Belgium electricity grid mix. The smart grid is the modern electricity grid, which significantly improves the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of electricity transmission systems. The advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system, which is the essential system in the smart grid, enables real-time data collection and data analysis obtained from smart meters (SMs) and other devices through last-mile communication networks. In this paper, the hardware-based link quality estimation (LQE) was modeled, namely an SNR-based model, a mapping model, and an RSSI- and PRR-based logistic regression model, and their performance was then evaluated by the root mean-squared error (RMSE) with the empirical data. The SNR-based and mapping models were formulated by the packet error probability, whereas the RSSI- and PRR-based logistic regression model was formulated by the empirical data fitting. The RSSI- and PRR-based logistic regression model outperformed the other two models, with an RMSE difference of 111–122%. The introduction of smart meters and time-use survey data is helping decision makers to understand the residential electricity consumption behaviour behind load profiles. However, it can be difficult to obtain the actual detailed consumption data due to privacy issues. Synthesising residential electricity consumption profiles may be an alternative way to develop synthetic load profiles that initially starts by reviewing the existing synthetic load profile methods. The purpose of this review is to identify the recent methods for synthesising residential electricity load profiles by conducting a rigorous standalone literature review. This review study has been applied and presented transparently and is replicable by other researchers. The review has answered the following research questions: the definition, concept and roles of residential electricity load profile and synthesised data; recent approaches and methods; research purposes; applicable simulations and validation methods of the final selected studies. The results show that the most applied approach in modelling residential electricity load profiles is the bottom-up approach. As it is detailed, it suitable to reflect the local residential behaviour in electricity consumption. Consequently, it is more complex to develop and calibrate the model as identified in the results. The transition towards climate neutrality will result in an increase in electrical vehicles, as well as other electric loads, leading to higher loads on electrical distribution grids. This paper presents an optimisation algorithm that enables the integration of more loads into distribution grid infrastructure using information from smart meters and/or smart meter gateways. To achieve this, a mathematical programming formulation was developed and implemented. The algorithm determines the optimal charging schedule for all electric vehicles connected to the distribution grid, taking into account various criteria to avoid violating physical grid limitations and ensuring non-discriminatory charging of all electric vehicles on the grid while also optimising grid operation. Additionally, the expandability of the infrastructure and fail-safe operation are considered through the decentralisation of all components. Various scenarios are modelled and evaluated in a simulation environment. The results demonstrate that the developed optimisation algorithm allows for higher transformer loads compared to a P(U) control approach, without causing grid overload as observed in scenarios without optimisation or P(U) control. In 2022, Thailand's Demand Response (DR) business model was shifting from the Traditional Utility (TU) model to the Load Aggregator (LA) model in accordance with Thailand's smart grid master plan. This research studied the current demand response model and mechanism to draw possible gaps in operations. This research deals with the data system owned by the individual load aggregator. The load aggregators collect meter data and evaluate demand adaptations before sending the results to claim compensation on behalf of their customers. This approach lacks transparency and facilitates distortion of the facts. Hence, this research introduces the data execution by smart contracts and data records on the blockchain that enhance transparent data sharing among multiple parties and maintain data integrity. Moreover, the proposed bidding algorithm allows customers to offer an expected price under the maximum incentive payment determined by the avoided costs of running the peaking power plants. Hence, the bidding helps reflect the DR operation costs on the customer side and control the budget for incentive payments. This study emphasized the smart contracts and decentralized application layer, so the public blockchain is a reasonable network for the test. However, implementation in real cases using the public blockchain requires careful considerations, such as network fees, transaction speeds, and the security of smart contract codes. This study analyses the expected utilization of an urban distribution grid under high penetration of photovoltaic and e-mobility with charging infrastructure on a residential level. The grid utilization and the corresponding power flow are evaluated, while varying the control strategies and photovoltaic installed capacity in different scenarios. Four scenarios are used to analyze the impact of e-mobility. The individual mobility demand is modelled based on the largest German studies on mobility "Mobilität in Deutschland", which is carried out every 5 years. To estimate the ramp-up of photovoltaic generation, a potential analysis of the roof surfaces in the supply area is carried out via an evaluation of an open solar potential study. The photovoltaic feed-in time series is derived individually for each installed system in a resolution of 15 min. The residential consumption is estimated using historical smart meter data, which are collected in London between 2012 and 2014. For a realistic charging demand, each residential household decides daily on the state of charge if their vehicle requires to be charged. The resulting charging time series depends on the underlying behavior scenario. Market prices and mobility demand are therefore used as scenario input parameters for a utility function based on the current state of charge to model individual behavior. The aggregated electricity demand is the starting point of the power flow calculation. The evaluation is carried out for an urban region with approximately 3100 residents. The analysis shows that increased penetration of photovoltaics combined with a flexible and adaptive charging strategy can maximize PV usage and reduce the need for congestion-related intervention by the grid operator by reducing the amount of kWh charged from the grid by 30% which reduces the average price of a charged kWh by 35% to 14 ct/kWh from 21.8 ct/kWh without PV optimization. The resulting grid congestions are managed by implementing an intelligent price or control signal. The analysis took place using data from a real German grid with 10 subgrids. A non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) process is intended to allow for the separation of individual appliances from an aggregated energy reading in order to estimate the operation of individual loads. In the past, electricity meters specified only active power readings, for billing purposes, thus limiting NILM capabilities. Recent progress in smart metering technology has introduced cost-effective, household-consumer-grade metering products, which can produce multiple features with high accuracy. In this paper, a new method is proposed for applying a BIRCH (balanced iterative reducing and clustering using hierarchies) algorithm as part of a multi-dimensional load disaggregation solution based on the extraction of multiple features from a smart meter. The method uses low-frequency meter reading and constructs a multi-dimensional feature space with adaption to smart meter parameters and is useful for type I as well as type II loads with the addition of timers. This new method is described as energy disaggregation in NILM by means of multi-dimensional BIRCH clustering (DNB). It is simple, fast, uses raw meter sampling, and does not require preliminary training or powerful hardware. The algorithm is tested using a private dataset and a public dataset. In smart grids, homes are equipped with smart meters (SMs) to monitor electricity consumption and report fine-grained readings to electric utility companies for billing and energy management. However, malicious consumers tamper with their SMs to report low readings to reduce their bills. This problem, known as electricity fraud, causes tremendous financial losses to electric utility companies worldwide and threatens the power grid's stability. To detect electricity fraud, several methods have been proposed in the literature. Among the existing methods, the data-driven methods achieve state-of-art performance. Therefore, in this paper, we study the main existing data-driven electricity fraud detection methods, with emphasis on their pros and cons. We study supervised methods, including wide and deep neural networks and multi-data-source deep learning models, and unsupervised methods, including clustering. Then, we investigate how to preserve the consumers' privacy, using encryption and federated learning, while enabling electricity fraud detection because it has been shown that fine-grained readings can reveal sensitive information about the consumers' activities. After that, we investigate how to design robust electricity fraud detectors against adversarial attacks using ensemble learning and model distillation because they enable malicious consumers to evade detection while stealing electricity. Finally, we provide a comprehensive comparison of the existing works, followed by our recommendations for future research directions to enhance electricity fraud detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The implementation of the smart grid (SG) and cyber-physical systems (CPS) greatly enhances the safety, reliability, and efficiency of energy production and distribution. Smart grids rely on smart meters (SMs) in converting the power grids (PGs) in a smart and reliable way. However, the proper operation of these systems needs to protect them against attack attempts and unauthorized entities. In this regard, key-management and authentication mechanisms can play a significant role. In this paper, we shed light on the importance of these mechanisms, clarifying the main efforts presented in the context of the literature. First, we address the main intelligent attacks affecting the SGs. Secondly, the main terms of cryptography are addressed. Thirdly, we summarize the common proposed key-management techniques with a suitable critique showing their pros and cons. Fourth, we introduce the effective paradigms of authentication in the state of the art. Fifth, the common two tools for verifying the security and integrity of protocols are presented. Sixth, the relevant research challenges are addressed to achieve trusted smart grids and protect their SMs against attack manipulations and unauthorized entities with a future vision.
