The two-phase ejector is a simple and compact pressure boosting device and widely used in ejector steam-generator water feeding systems and core emergency cooling systems. The direct contact condensation of water and steam is the key process of a two-phase ejector. Usually, the high-temperature and high-pressure steam will inevitably induce non-condensable gases. The existence of non-condensable gases will reduce the condensation heat transfer rate between steam and water, and harm the equipment. This study carried out 3D numerical simulations of a two-phase ejector based on an inhomogeneous multiphase model. The steam inlet pressure and the non-condensable gas mass fraction rang in 0.6–2.9 MPa and 1–10%, respectively. The heat and mass transfer characteristics were analyzed under different conditions. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient and plume penetration length increased with the steam inlet pressure. Non-condensable gas prevents direct contact condensation between the steam and water. The non-condensable gas mass fraction rises from 1% to 10%, the heat transfer between steam and water deteriorates, and leads to a lower heat transfer coefficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a typical unconventional energy reservoir, natural gas hydrate is believed to be the most promising alternative for conventional resources in future energy patterns. The exploitation process of natural gas hydrate comprises a hydrate phase state, heat and mass transfer, and multi-phase seepage. Therefore, the study of heat transfer characteristics of gas hydrate is of great significance for an efficient exploitation of gas hydrate. In this paper, the research methods and research progress of gas hydrate heat transfer are reviewed from four aspects: measurement methods of heat transfer characteristics, influencing factors of heat transfer in a hydrate system and hydrate-containing porous media systems, predictive models for effective thermal conductivity, and heat transfer mechanisms of hydrate. Adsorption refrigerators are a compelling ecological alternative to compressor refrigerators; global warming forces us to constantly look for alternative sources of energy and cold. Cold production in adsorption chillers is based on the use of heat generated by other processes running in the company. Waste heat from production processes, which has, until now, been irretrievably lost, is a potential source of energy for generating cold via an adsorption unit producing chilled water. Cooling optimizes the use of the heating network in summer and can lead to increased electricity production while reducing heat supply losses. Thus far, attempts to implement adsorption refrigerators for widespread use have not been successful as a result of the low efficiency of these devices; this is directly related to the poor heat and mass transfer conditions in the beds and heat exchangers of adsorption refrigerators. The solutions used so far, such as new working pairs, glued beds or modifications to the structure or cycle length, are still not strong enough for these devices. Therefore, it is necessary to look for new solutions. Using micro- and nanobubbles as media to increase mass and heat transfer in refrigerators is an innovative and pioneering solution. Thus, this document describes the most important features of micro- and nanobubble technology applications in adsorption refrigerators. The humidifier plays a key role in a humidification–dehumidification (HDH) desalination system; it directly affects both the freshwater production efficiency and energy consumption ratio of the system. In this study, for a humidifier in an HDH system, a heat–mass coupled differential equation model of spray water and air on the surface of the packing material was established, and the effects of parameters such as the spray water temperature (tw), mass flow rate of spray water (mw), air temperature (ta), and air mass flow rate (ma) on the humidification performance of humidifiers composed of eight different types of packing materials were investigated. The results show the following: (1) Under the same inlet spray water and air conditions, the humidification performance of different packing materials from good to bad is as follows: cellulose paper, polypropylene, hackettes, saddles, snowflakes, wooden slats, polyvinyl chloride, gunny bag cloth. (2) Increasing the tw can significantly improve the humidification performance. To achieve higher humidification energy efficiency, it is recommended to increase the tw to above 80 °C. (3) With the increase in the mw, although the humidification efficiency (εhum) decreases slightly, the humidification rate (mhum) increases, and the specific humidification energy ratio (ηhum) decreases accordingly. To maintain a high mhum and a low ηhum, it is advisable to control the mw at not less than 0.5 kg/s. (4) Increasing the humidifier inlet ta can improve the mhum, εhum, and ηhum, although not as effectively as increasing tw. (5) Increasing the ma can improve mhum and εhum. However, it simultaneously increases the ηhum. The results of this study can provide theoretical guidance for the selection of efficient packing materials and the optimization of humidifier operating conditions in HDH desalination systems. The characteristics of water droplet heating and evaporation on structured hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces in the range of static contact angles from 73° to 155° were studied experimentally using high-speed video recording. Two fundamentally different technologies for applying coatings on a metal surface were used in comparison with the results on a polished surface. Microscopic studies were conducted to identify the features of the formed coatings. The wetting properties were characterized by means of the static contact angle and the contact angle hysteresis: on polished surface No. 1 (contact angle—73°, hysteresis—11°), on structured surface No. 2 (contact angle—125°, hysteresis—9°), and on structured surface No 3 (contact angle—155°, hysteresis—7°). The experimental dependences of the droplet evaporation rate on the different surfaces under normal conditions (ambient air temperature—293 K, atmospheric pressure, humidity—35%) were obtained. The evaporation regimes of droplets on the surfaces under study were identified. Water droplets evaporated in the pinning mode on surfaces No. 1 and No. 2. When a water droplet evaporated on surface No 3, the droplet was in the constant contact angle regime for ≈90% of its lifetime. Based on the experimental data obtained, a two-dimensional model of conjugate heat and mass transfer was developed, which describes the heating and evaporation of a liquid droplet on structured hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces at a wide range of contact angles. Satisfactory agreement was obtained between the numerical simulation results and experimental data. Using the model, the fields of temperature, concentration and other key characteristics were established at different points in time. To study the heat and mass transfer characteristics of an evaporative cooler for cooling high-temperature working fluids, an experimental device of the evaporative cooler was built, and a corresponding test system was constructed. Then, the experimental study was carried out based on an orthogonal experimental design, and the law and extent of the influence of water flow in the tube, the spray water flow rate, the inlet water temperature in the tube, and the air flow rate on the heat dissipation, cooling efficiency, and heat and mass transfer coefficients were obtained. The correlation equations of the heat and mass transfer coefficients were obtained by fitting the orthogonal experimental data, and the validity of the correlation equations was confirmed by the verification experiment. Adsorption technology utilizes low-temperature renewable and waste heat sources for cost-effective and environmentally friendly cooling and water desalination systems. However, the problem with existing adsorption refrigerators is the low COP. This is caused by poor heat and mass transfer in existing packed bed designs. The solution to this problem lies in the use of fluidized bed technology, which enhances heat and mass transfer mechanisms. Various approaches to the construction and operation of adsorption systems with a fluidized bed of adsorbent can be found in the literature; hence, the aim of the work is to analyze the existing applications of a fluidized bed in adsorption refrigerators and other systems utilizing sorption beds. There are many methods for improving the energy efficiency of adsorption refrigerators. However, the literature suggests that fluidized bed systems have the potential to significantly improve the energy efficiency of adsorption cooling and desalination systems. Based on the review, it was concluded that using fluidization technology in adsorption cooling and desalination systems can be beneficial and represents significant potential for future research. This study investigates the heat and mass transfer characteristics of a binary mixture (R134a/R245fa) evaporated in a porous medium. The Eulerian model coupled with the multiphase VOF model and species transport equations is employed to establish a multi-component evaporation model. The effects of heat flux ranging from 200 kW/m2 to 500 kW/m2, porosity ranging from 0.4 to 0.6, and mass fraction ratios (R134a/R245fa) of 3:7, 5:5, and 7:3 are explored. The results indicate that an increase in heat flux contributes to an increase in the evaporation rate. For the overall evaporation rate, the evaporation rates of R134a and R245fa improve by 11.3%, 6.9%, and 16.3%, respectively, while the maximum improvement in heat transfer coefficient is only 1.4%. The maximum evaporation rate is achieved at intermediate porosity in the porous medium, and the highest heat transfer coefficient is obtained at a porosity of 0.4. With the increase in mass fraction, the evaporation rate of the corresponding species also increases, while the overall evaporation rate and heat transfer coefficient remain almost unchanged. Therefore, heat transfer during flow with a change of phase in mini-channels turned out to be a necessary solution to achieve high heat fluxes with reasonably miniature geometrical dimensions and a temperature at a not very high level within the heat exchanger device. Adsorption systems are alternatives to compressor cooling systems. Apart from many advantages, these systems are characterized by low COP and SCP parameters. One of the most promising options to improve the performance of adsorption chillers is the replacement of the stationary bed with a fluidized one. A fluidized bed significantly increases the heat and mass transfer within the bed, enables better contact between gas and solid phases, and results in the proper mixing of adsorbent particles. This paper presents the possibility of using fluidized beds in adsorption chillers. This paper shows the results of CFD numerical modelling of the operation of a fluidized bed for an adsorption chiller and simulations of the bed temperature profiles during the adsorption and desorption processes of sorbent in a fluidized bed. Shrinkage is an obvious phenomenon that occurs when drying plant-based food materials, and it has a crucial influence on heat–mass transfer mechanisms, energy consumption in drying, and dried product quality. The present study aims to develop a theoretical shrinkage model considering the drying kinetics and shrinkage velocity approach during the convective drying of jackfruit. Since there is no theoretical model in the literature that considers the transfer process along with shrinkage phenomena for jackfruit drying, this work focuses on presenting the drying and shrinkage kinetics behaviour through the development of a mathematical model. Two distinct models were developed, each considering the presence or absence of shrinkage phenomena. Model validation was carried out by comparing the predicted results with experimental data from drying tests conducted at 60 °C, and model accuracy was evaluated through statistical error analysis. In the shrinkage-induced model, the shrinkage exhibited a linear relationship with drying time, as the moisture content decreased from 5.25 to 0.47 kg/kg on a dry basis when the temperature increased to 54 °C. Notably, the shrinkage-induced model demonstrated superior performance, displaying low mean absolute error (MAE) values—0.27 kg/kg on a dry basis for moisture content, 2.07 °C for temperature variation, and 0.04 for shrinkage, when compared to the model without shrinkage. Furthermore, the mean relative error (MRE) values for the shrinkage-induced model were 45.71% and 33.33% lower than those of the model without shrinkage for average moisture content and temperature, respectively. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for the food drying industry, offering new knowledge about drying kinetics and shrinkage characteristics that can contribute to the development of energy-efficient drying systems. The development of efficient and compact reactors is an urgent need in the field of distributed hydrogen production. Steam reforming of methane is the main method to produce hydrogen. Aiming at the problems of high heat and mass transfer resistance of the existing fixed bed reactors, and the difficulty of replacing the wall-coated catalyst in the microreactors, a composite packed bed was proposed to meet the demand of small-scale hydrogen production. The structure consists of a multi-channel framework with high thermal conductivity, which is filled with Ni/Al2O3 catalyst particles in each channel. A three-dimensional numerical model of the steam methane reforming process in the novel reactor was established using ANSYS FLUENT software. The heat transfer and reaction characteristics in the reactor were studied. Firstly, the advantages of the multi-channel skeleton in enhancing the radial heat transfer performance were verified by comparing it with the traditional randomly packed bed without the channel skeleton. Secondly, the influences of inlet velocity, inlet temperature, and heating wall temperature on the heat transfer and reaction performances in the reactor were studied, and a sensitivity factor was adopted to do the sensitivity analysis. The results show that the methane conversion rate is most sensitive to the wall temperature, while the inlet velocity and inlet temperature have less effect. Finally, the effects of two skeleton materials were studied. The results show that when the wall temperature is higher than 1200 K, there is no significant difference between these two reactors, which indicates that the use of cordierite with a lower price, but also with a lower thermal conductivity can significantly reduce the reactor's cost. Determination of the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) distribution is important during the design and operation of many devices in microelectronics, construction, the car industry, drilling, the power industry and research on nuclear fusion. The first part of the manuscript shows works describing how a change in the coefficient affects the operation of devices. Next, various methods of determining the coefficient are presented. The most common method to determine the HTC is the use of Newton's law of cooling. If this method cannot be applied directly, there are other methods that can be found in the open literature. They use analytical formulations, the lumped thermal capacity assumption, the 1D unsteady heat conduction equation for a semi-infinite wall, the fin model, energy conservation and the analogy between heat and mass transfer. The HTC distribution can also be calculated by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling if all boundary conditions with fluid and solid properties are known. Often, the surface on which the HTC is to be determined is not accessible for any measuring sensors, or their installation might disturb the analysed phenomenon. It also happens that calculations using direct or CFD methods cannot be performed due to the lack of required boundary conditions or sufficiently proven models to analyse the considered physical phenomena. Too long a calculation time needed by CFD tools may also be problematic if the method should be used in the online mode. One way to solve the above problem is to assume an unknown boundary condition and include additional information from the sensors located at a certain distance from the investigated surface. The problem defined in this way can be solved by inverse methods. In this paper, we propose a concise but general two-dimensional model based on the penetration model in order to simulate the heat and mass transfer and drying kinetics of sludge in the paddle dryer. The sludge control equations were developed to simulate the heat and mass transfer of sludge and the penetration model was introduced to describe the mixing of sludge. Compared to the experimental results in the existing literature, the drying kinetics simulated simulated by the present model were in good agreement with the experimental data under various operation conditions. The effects of four key parameters on drying kinetics in the paddle dryer were studied. The results showed that the water content increased with the increase of sludge flowrate and the decrease of wall temperature and sludge density. Furthermore, the stirring velocity had little effect on the drying kinetics of the sludge. A plate-type Al/Fe–Cr alloy/Al-clad substrate was used to prepare a sandwich-structured plate-type anodic alumina catalyst by anodization, post-modification treatment, and metal loading. The as-prepared plate-type catalyst was utilized in the design of a catalytic plate reactor for a methane steam reforming reaction, and a 3D model was developed to simulate the performance of tube-type and box-type reformers. The experimental results of the preparation of the clad materials showed that the hydrothermal treatment and subsequent high-temperature calcination transformed the amorphous skeletal alumina in the conventional anodic alumina layer into γ-alumina, and significantly increased its specific surface area. Simulation results showed that the temperature difference between the channel wall and the center of the gas phase of the thin-walled catalyst was only 30% of that of the particulate catalyst, indicating the potential advantages of the catalytic plate reactor in terms of heat transfer and energy saving. When the length-to-diameter ratio (or length-to-width ratio) of the reaction channel is small and the channel height is large, insufficient transverse mass transfer and backmixing are two major factors affecting reformer performance. For the tube-type channels, a length-to-diameter ratio of 10~35, and a diameter of 5~20 represent favorable choices. In contrast, for the box-type channel, the length-to-width ratio and the height should be set to 2~4 and 2~5 mm, respectively. Additionally, for box-type channels, the number of gas inlet ports has a significant effect on the reformer performance, and the distribution state provided by two inlet ports is close to the ideal distribution state. In this research, the authors built a 3D model of the sprayed drop film with salty effluents on a horizontal tube heat exchanger, and they studied the heat transfer characteristics of the salty effluent flowing outside the tube in an MVRC system. Serious gas blockage problems often arise during the commissioning process of pipelines with large elevation differences due to the gas/air accumulation at the high point of the pipe, which causes overpressuring and vibrations of the pipeline and even accidents such as bursting. Heat and mass transfer, widely involved in various energy systems, has great impacts on the safety, efficiency, as well as performance of these systems. This paper reviews molecular dynamics (MD) concepts on heat transfer analysis of supercritical CO2, and highlights the major parameters that can affect the accuracy of respective thermal coefficients. Subsequently, the prime aspects of construction, transfer identification, and thermal performance are organized according to their challenges and prospective solutions associated with the mutability of supercritical CO2 properties. Likewise, the characteristics of bound force field schemes and thermal relaxation approaches are discussed on a case-by-case basis. Both convective and diffusive states of trans- and supercritical CO2 are debated, given their magnitude effects on molecular interactions. Following the scarcity of literature on similar enquiries, this paper recommended a future series of studies on molecular dynamics models in a large region of supercriticality and phase-interactions for coupled heat and mass transfer systems. The heat transfer performance of the evaporator significantly affects the heat transfer capacity of the loop heat pipe (LHP). The vapor blanket can be formed once the vapor penetrates the wick especially at high heat flux, resulting in an unsaturated state of the wick and deteriorating the evaporator performance. It is crucial to understand the liquid–vapor behavior for enhancing the LHP performance by investigating the fundamental heat and mass transfer in the wick with phase-change. However, previous modeling studies only considered a single-phase flow or complete saturation in the wick, and the capillary effect on the fluid states was rarely taken into account. The present work developed two mathematical models based on the assumptions of saturated and unsaturated wicks. The fluid states were analyzed at the liquid–vapor interface under the consideration of the capillary effect, and a pore-scale evaporation model was applied to study the phase change behavior and interfacial heat and mass transfer. The relative permeability was introduced to describe the two-phase flow in the porous wick, and the capillary force was modeled as a function of the local saturation in the two-phase region. The temperature results calculated by the models were compared with the experimental results, and the assumption that the vapor penetration leads to deterioration of evaporator performance at high heat flux was validated. Vapor blanket thickness can be estimated through the saturation profile, which provides a simple and effective method. It was also found that the capillary number ω was the key factor affecting the thickness of the vapor blanket. The greater the ω , the faster the vapor blanket thickness increases. This research investigated the flow and heat mass transmission of a thermal Buongiorno nanofluid film caused by an unsteady stretched sheet. The movement of the nanoparticles through the thin film layer is caused by the strength of the heat flow and the stretching force of the sheet working together. The thermal thin-film flow and heat mechanism, and the properties of mass transfer along the film layer, were comprehensively investigated. The consequences of the heat generation, magnetic field, and dissipation phenomenon were also thoroughly examined. Using appropriate dimensionless variables, the fundamental time-dependent equations of thin film nanofluid flow and heat mass transfer were modeled and converted to the ordinary differential equations system. Mathematica version 12 is the software that was used to build the numerical code here. Next, the shooting technique was applied to numerically solve the transformed equations. The elegance of the shooting technique and evidence of the consistency, dependability, and precision of our acquired results is that the results are more effective than those for the thin film nanofluid equations that are now available. There is a significant degree of consistency between the recently calculated results and the results that have been published for a limiting condition. Investigations were conducted into the effects of a variety of parameters on the flow of nanoliquid films, including the Nusselt number, skin friction, and Sherwood number. In addition, a detailed overview of the physical embedded parameters is provided through graphs and tables. However, the important features of the most relevant outcomes are the effects of higher porous and unsteadiness parameters on minimizing the thickness of the thin film; and the viscoelastic parameter has the reverse effect. In many applications, such as the miniaturization and cooling of high-power electronics in aerospace, a new thermal management solution is needed, and metal foam radiators may be a valuable solution. In this work, X-ray scanning was applied to obtain the original structure of the metal foam. The real structure calculation model of the metal foam was obtained through a series of modeling, and high-precision numerical simulation was built to study heat and mass transfer in the original structure and homogeneous substitution model for three-dimensional porous metal foam. The distribution of velocity, pressure and temperature field is investigated. The results show that the heat transfer characteristics increase and flow resistance decreases with an increase in the Reynolds number. The heat transfer performance and flow resistance increase with the decrease of porosity. The porous media homogenization model can be consistent with the original real calculation results of metal foam by using appropriate values of resistance coefficient and porosity. This particular study focuses on investigating the heat and mass transport characteristics of a liquid flow across the conical gap (CG) of a cone-disk apparatus (CDA). The cone and disk may be taken as stationary or rotating at varying angular velocities. Consideration is given to heat transport affected by solar radiation. The Rosseland approximation is used for heat radiation calculations in the current work. To observe the mass deposition variation on the surface, the effect of thermophoresis is taken into account. Appropriate similarity transformations are used to convert the three-dimensional boundary-layer governing partial differential equations (PDEs) into a nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) system. Particularly for the flow, thermal and concentration profiles, plots are provided and examined. Results reveal that the flow field upsurges significantly with upward values of Reynolds numbers for both cone and disk rotations. The increase in values of the radiation parameter improves heat transport. Drying is a complex process of simultaneous heat, mass, and momentum transport phenomena with continuous phase changes. Numerical modelling is one of the most effective tools to mechanistically express the different physics of drying processes for accurately predicting the drying kinetics and understanding the morphological changes during drying. However, the mathematical modelling of drying processes is complex and computationally very expensive due to multiphysics and the multiscale nature of heat and mass transfer during drying. Physics-informed machine learning (PIML)-based modelling has the potential to overcome these drawbacks and could be an exciting new addition to drying research for describing drying processes by embedding fundamental transport laws and constraints in machine learning models. To develop such a novel PIML-based model for drying applications, it is necessary to have a fundamental understanding of heat, mass, and momentum transfer processes and their mathematical formulation of drying processes, in addition to data-driven modelling knowledge. Based on a comprehensive literature review, this paper presents two types of information: fundamental physics-based information about drying processes and data-driven modelling strategies to develop PIML-based models for drying applications. The current status of physics-based models and PIML-based models and their limitations are discussed. A sample PIML-based modelling framework for drying application is presented. Finally, the challenges of addressing simultaneous heat, mass, and momentum transport phenomena in PIML modelling for optimizing the drying process are presented at the end of this paper. Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) have shown better mechanical performance, mass transfer, and thermal conductivity than conventional and strut-based structures, which have been employed in different disciplines. Most of the literature investigates different TPMS topologies in cooling channels to enhance thermal performance due to the smooth curvature and large surface area. However, a deeper investigation of the effects of TPMS design variables and the thermal performance advantages of cooling channels is required. This review details the effects of TPMS design variables, i.e., porosity, wall thickness, and unit cell size, on flow and heat transfer enhancement. It is found that varying the design variables significantly changes the flow and heat transfer characteristics. Also, by comparing TPMS and conventional cooling structures, it is found that most TPMS structures show better thermal performance than other strategies. Moreover, different fabrication methods for TPMS-based cooling channels in recent investigations are collected and discussed. In light of the reviewed literature, recommendations for future research suggest that more experimental and numerical studies on the flow and heat transfer for different cooling applications are needed. These temperatures are affected by different factors at different scales, including the shape and thermal properties of the horticultural products, package design, pallet arrangement, or characteristics of the cold chain unit of operation. Therefore, airflow and heat transfer studies are valuable in evaluating these factors to optimize the cold chain and achieve and maintain an optimal product temperature. This paper provides an overview of the different scales of the numerical model and experimental setup used to assess the influence of the different factors on the cooling performance, as well as any challenges and limitations of each scale. The importance of considering other aspects in the cold chain studies, such as product quality, energy consumption, and package mechanical strength, will be discussed through an integrative approach. Finally, we propose new perspectives on how multi-scale modelling approaches can be helpful in tackling different challenges and how to investigate the effects of different factors on the cooling efficiency. To accurately study the drying characteristics of tobacco strips in the process of redrying, a discrete heaped physical model of tobacco strips is built. Based on this model, a convective drying multiphase porous media model of the heaped tobacco strips is established, which considers the binary diffusion and transport of vapor inside and outside the tobacco leaf. The model is solved using COMSOL Multiphysics, and the accuracy of the model is verified by experiments. The changes in hot air velocity, vapor and moisture content, and evaporation rate in heaped tobacco strips with different thicknesses are analyzed. The results show that: it is feasible to study the drying characteristics of tobacco strips in redrying using a discrete heaped model; there were significant differences in water content, evaporation rate, and temperature in different regions of heaped tobacco strips; the increase in heaping thickness will significantly reduce the uniformity of heat and mass transfer of tobacco strips in the process of convection drying. In the direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) system, the temperature polarization due to boundary layer formation limits the system performance. This study presents the experimental results and heat transfer analysis of a DCMD module coupled with a salinity gradient solar pond (SGSP) under three different flow channel configurations. In the first case, the feed and permeate channels were both empty, while in the next two cases, the feed and permeate channels were filled with a porous spacer material. Two different spacer geometries are examined: 1.5 mm thick with a filament angle of 65°, and 2 mm thick with a filament angle of 90°. The study considers only the heat transfer due to conduction by replacing the hydrophobic membrane normally used in a DCMD module with a thin polypropylene sheet so that no mass transfer can occur between the feed and permeate channels. The Reynolds number for all three configurations was found to be between 1000 and 2000, indicating the flow regime was laminar. The flow rate through both the feed and permeate sides was the same, and experiments were conducted for flow rates of 5 L/min and 3 L/min. China is a large agricultural country that is leading worldwide in the annual number of agricultural products and exports. However, the growth and harvest of fruits and vegetables are greatly affected by geographical conditions, climate and other factors, which will lead to their rotting in peak season and shortages in the off-season. The explosion puffing technology at low temperature and high pressure is a kind of compound drying technology which can enable the puffed product to obtain the advantages of honeycomb, good rehydration, a short running time, etc. With the guidance of the theory of heat and mass transfer and relevant thermodynamics laws, this study has established high-pressure extruding technology in low-temperature heating; expanded the two-phase theoretical model, using mass conservation and the law of the conservation of energy to analyze the coupled heat and mass transfer process and influencing factors; and researched the influence of the operation temperature, pressure and time on the properties of dried fruit. In recent years, growing energy demands and environmental pollution caused by the extensive use of fossil fuels have inspired considerable research interest in adsorptive heat transformation (AHT). This technology offers effective utilization of low-grade solar or waste thermal energy for cooling and heating with low environmental impact. Increasing the AHT power is a keystone for further development and dissemination of this emerging technology. The AHT power is mainly determined by ad/desorption dynamics, which is significantly hindered by slow heat transfer between the adsorbent and heat exchanger. Shaping the adsorbent bed as a coating on the heat exchanger surface is considered an effective route to enhance heat transfer and increase the AHT power. In this review, the technology of adsorbent coating for AHT is comprehensively surveyed, including coating synthesis, adsorption dynamics, and use in real AHT devices. The advantages of the coated bed configuration are considered, and its challenges are outlined. A brief review of the development of ideas on extremal principles in the theory of heat and mass transfer processes (including those in reacting media) is given. The extremal principles of non-equilibrium thermodynamics are critically examined. Examples are shown in which the mechanical use of entropy production-based principles turns out to be inefficient and even contradictory. The main problem of extremal principles in the theory of irreversible processes is the impossibility of their generalization, often even within the framework of a class of problems. Alternative extremal formulations are considered: variational principles for heat and mass transfer equations and other dissipative systems. Several extremal principles are singled out, which make it possible to simplify the numerical solution of the initial equations. Criteria are proposed that allow one to classify extremal principles according to their areas of applicability. The ceramic industry is one of the pillars of the Brazilian economy, characterized by making low-cost products and an obsolete manufacturing process from a technological point of view. Among the various stages of production of ceramic materials, drying is one of the most energy-consuming and, in general, causes structural damage to the product, compromising its mechanical performance and final quality. Despite the relevance, studies on the drying of ceramic materials are mostly conducted at the experimental level and limited to some specific operational conditions. In this scenario, this research aims to theoretically study the heat and mass transfers in industrial ceramic blocks during drying. Based on the lumped analysis method, and considering the dimensional variations of the material, new phenomenological mathematical models and their respective analytical solutions are proposed to describe the kinetics of mass loss and heating of the material. The predicted results referring to the thermal and gravimetric behavior of the block during the oven drying process under different conditions are compared with the experimental data, obtaining excellent agreement between the results. Furthermore, the transport coefficients were estimated, proving the dependence of these parameters on the drying air conditions. The convective mass transfer coefficient ranged from 6.69 × 10–7 to 15.97 × 10–7 m/s on the outer surface of the block and from 0.70 × 10–7 to 1.03 × 10–7 m/s on the inner surface of the material when the drying air temperature ranged from 50 to 100 °C. The convective heat transfer coefficient ranged from 4.79 to 2.04 W/(m2.°C) on the outer surface of the block and from 1.00 to 0.94 W/(m2.°C) on the inner surface of the material when air temperature ranged from 50 to 100 °C. Film-cooling technology is used in high-temperature components of gas turbines to extend their service lives. Hot-gas path components are susceptible to damage or failure in the absence of film cooling. Much of the optimization research efforts have been focused on film hole shapes, heat/mass transfer measurement techniques, and film cooling performance under various mainstream and coolant side operating conditions. Due to recent rapid advancements in the areas of measurement techniques (e.g., pressure-sensitive paints and fast high-resolution imaging) and metal additive manufacturing (AM), film cooling technology has undergone significant changes and shows potential new development. In this review, a historical perspective is discussed covering over five decades of innovation: the geometrical effects from injection angle and hole shapes; flow effects from density ratio, momentum-flux ratio, blowing ratio, advective capacity ratio, and freestream conditions; and more items related to AM. The impact of AM on film hole design strategies, the challenges posed by state-of-the-art AM technology, and pathways for future research are discussed. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the non-Newtonian unsteady Williamson fluid on a stretching/shrinking surface along with thermophoresis and Brownian effects. Basically, the model consists of a time-dependent magnetic field. The fluid is considered to be electrically conducting due to the effect of the external magnetic field. The values of magnetic Reynolds number are so small that the induced magnetic field is assumed to be negligible. In the concentration equation, the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis are discussed. Employing the similarity transformations, the governing nonlinear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) are converted into the Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). The resulting ODEs are solved with the combined effects of the Successive Over Relaxation (SOR) method and Finite Difference Method (FDM). The impact of all the including parameters such as suction parameter, injection parameter, stretching/shrinking parameter, the ratio of viscosity, local Weissenberg number, unsteadiness parameter, Eckert number, Prandtl number, Lewis number, Nusselt number, Brownian motion parameter, shear stress, heat transfer rate, and mass transfer rate are analyzed using graphs and tables. Results show that the values of fluid velocity are better for S = 8 ,   − S = 0 ,   λ = 0.3 ,   β * = 0.9 ,   W i = 0.3 , and A a = 2.0 . It is also depicted from the results that the values of boundary layer thickness are better for S = 0 ,   − S = − 8 ,   λ = 0.3 ,     β * = 0.1 ,   W i = 1.5 , and A a = 0.25 . From the above numeric results, it is concluded that the fluid velocity is reduced and the thermal boundary layer thickness is enhanced by the enhancement of the stretching parameter. A mechanically pumped two-phase loop (MPTL) system used for the accurate and stable thermal control of orbital heat sources can show excellent characteristics. In order to study the dynamic behaviors of heat and mass transfer of MPTL systems, particularly in response to heat load variations, a transient numerical model was developed by using the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. A comparison between the simulation and test results indicated that the errors of mass flow rate were at around ±10%, of which the validity and accuracy were verified. The model was used to study the operating state, and flow and heat characteristics on the basis of the analyses of variations in mass flow rate, temperature, and quality under different operating conditions. Above all, the complex transient behaviors in response to heat load variations in an MPTL system were studied in this model, such as the mass transfer between the accumulator and loop. Results indicate that the phenomenon of mass exchange occurs between the main loop and the accumulator when the heating power increased or decreased. Variations in temperature and pressure in the accumulator were different for the cases of increasing and decreasing power. The slope of the exchange rate curve and the maximal value of the flow rate decreased with the increase in filling amount. In this analysis, we considered a comparative study of micropolar Casson nanofluid flow on a vertical nonlinear Riga stretching sheet. Effects of thermal and velocity slip are considered under thermophoresis and Brownian motions. Select nonlinear PDEs transformed into nonlinear coupled ODEs using the set of suitable transformations. The nonlinear coupled ODEs are solved through a numerical technique along with the Runge–Kutta 4th-order scheme. The impacts of pertinent flow parameters on skin friction, Nusselt number, temperature, and velocity distributions are depicted through tabular and graphical form. Brownian motion and the magnitude of the Sherwood number have opposite performances; likewise, the Nusselt number and Brownian motion also have opposite performances. The Sherwood number and Nusselt number succeeded with higher values. The increment of the Casson fluid parameter declined with fluid velocity, which shows that thickness is reduced due to the increment of the Casson fluid parameter. The recent study was concerned with employing the finite element method for heat and mass transfer of MHD Maxwell nanofluid flow over the stretching sheet under the effects of radiations and chemical reactions. Moreover, the effects of viscous dissipation and porous plate were considered. The mathematical model of the flow was described in the form of a set of partial differential equations (PDEs). Further, these PDEs were transformed into a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) using similarity transformations. Rather than analytical integrations, numerical integration was used to compute integrals obtained by applying the finite element method. The mesh-free analysis and comparison of the finite element method with the finite difference method are also provided to justify the calculated results. The effect of different parameters on velocity, temperature and concentration profile is shown in graphs, and numerical values for physical quantities of interest are also given in a tabular form. In addition, simulations were carried out by employing software that applies the finite element method for solving PDEs. The calculated results are also portrayed in graphs with varying sheet velocities. The results show that the second-order finite difference method is more accurate than the finite element method with linear interpolation polynomial. However, the finite element method requires less number of iterations than the finite difference method in a considered particular case. We had high hopes that this work would act as a roadmap for future researchers entrusted with resolving outstanding challenges in the realm of enclosures utilized in industry and engineering. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) have been frequently applied to model the growth conditions in photobioreactors, which are affected in a complex way by multiple, interacting physical processes. We review common photobioreactor types and discuss the processes occurring therein as well as how these processes have been considered in previous CFD models. The analysis reveals that CFD models of photobioreactors do often not consider state-of-the-art modeling approaches. As a comprehensive photobioreactor model consists of several sub-models, we review the most relevant models for the simulation of fluid flows, light propagation, heat and mass transfer and growth kinetics as well as state-of-the-art models for turbulence and interphase forces, revealing their strength and deficiencies. In addition, we review the population balance equation, breakage and coalescence models and discretization methods since the predicted bubble size distribution critically depends on them. This comprehensive overview of the available models provides a unique toolbox for generating CFD models of photobioreactors. Directions future research should take are also discussed, mainly consisting of an extensive experimental validation of the single models for specific photobioreactor geometries, as well as more complete and sophisticated integrated models by virtue of the constant increase of the computational capacity. Producing ice using adsorption systems can represent a sustainable solution and meet the recent global environmental regulations as they use natural refrigerants and can be driven by solar energy. However, the beds used in these systems still have low thermal and adsorption characteristics. This study investigates numerically the use of an emerging aluminum foamed bed packed with advanced Maxsorb adsorbent in a two-bed adsorption system and reports cases of performance improvements compared to the classical finned-tube based system used to produce ice. A comprehensive 2-D transient pressure distribution model for the two beds was developed and validated. The model considers the temporal and spatial variations of the two beds' parameters, while the effect of the thermal mass and heat transfer effectiveness of the condenser and evaporator components are imitated at the boundary conditions for bed openings using two zero-dimensional models. The results show the interrelated effects of varying the cycle times from 400 s to 1200 s with 2, 5, and 10 mm foam thicknesses/fin heights on the overall performance of both systems. The Al-foam based system demonstrated the performance superiority at a 2 mm foam thickness with maximum ice production of 49 kgice/kgads in 8 h, an increase of 26.6% over the counterpart finned-tube based system at a 400 s cycle time. The best COP of 0.366 was attained at a 5 mm foam thickness and 1200 s with an increase of 26.7%. The effective uptake of the Al-foam based system was reduced dramatically at a 10 mm foam thickness, which deteriorated the system performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evaporative cooling is a promising concept to improve proton exchange membrane fuel cells. While the particular concept based on gas diffusion layers (GDLs) modified with hydrophilic lines (HPILs) has recently been demonstrated, there is a lack in the understanding of the mass and heat transport processes. We have developed a 3-D, non-isothermal, macro-homogeneous numerical model focusing on one interface between a HPIL and an anode gas flow channel (AGFC). In the base case model, water evaporates within a thin film adjacent to the interfaces of the HPIL with the AGFC and with the hydrophobic anode GDL. The largest part of the generated water vapor leaves the cell via the AGFC. The transport to the cathode side is shown to be partly limited by the ab-/desorption into/from the membrane. The cooling due to the latent heat has a strong effect on the local evaporation rate. An increase of the mass transfer coefficient for evaporation leads to a transport limited regime inside the MEA while the transport via the AGFC is limited by evaporation kinetics. In this paper, a plate counter-flow dew-point evaporative cooling system was designed with a nanoporous membrane covered on the surface of the wet channel for enhancement of heat and mass transfer. First, the operating principle of this device and theoretical analysis of nanoporous membrane evaporation were discussed in detail. Then, the impacts of several operating parameters on cooling performance, mainly including inlet air temperature, humidity, velocity, and the effect of utilizing the membrane, were investigated in trials. It was found that the cooling performance can be improved by using membrane significantly. In the dry channel, the maximum temperature decrease can reach 12.5 °C. At a high inlet air temperature, the product air can be dropped to a lower temperature, contributing to a more significant heat transfer process. Lower humidity, on the other hand, resulted in a reduced product air temperature and a lower cooling efficiency. Under the condition of 50% humidity, the wet-bulb efficiency and dew-point efficiency were 1.09 and 0.79, respectively. With the inlet air velocity increasing from 1.5 m/s to 2 m/s, the outlet air temperature would rise, and the wet-bulb efficiency and dew-point efficiency would decrease. We investigated the effect of electrolyte thickness and operating temperature on the heat and mass transfer characteristics of solid oxide fuel cells. We conducted extensive numerical simulations to analyze single cell performance of a planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with electrolyte thicknesses from 80 to 100 µm and operating temperatures between 700 °C and 800 °C. The commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code was utilized to simulate the transport behavior and electrochemical reactions. As expected, the maximum power density increased with decreasing electrolyte thickness, and the difference became significant when the current density increased among different electrolyte thicknesses at a fixed temperature. Thinner electrolytes are beneficial for volumetric power density due to lower ohmic loss. Moreover, the SOFC performance enhanced with increasing operating temperature, which substantially changed the reaction rate along the channel direction. Thermally-driven heat pumps can help to mitigate CO2 emissions by enhancing the efficiency of heating systems or by driving cooling systems with waste or solar heat. In order to make the thermally-driven systems more attractive for the end consumer, these systems need a higher power density. A higher power density can be achieved by intensifying the heat and mass transfer processes within the adsorption heat exchanger. For the optimization of this key component, a numerical model of the non-isothermal adsorption dynamics can be applied. The calibration of such a model can be difficult, since heat and mass transfer processes are strongly coupled. We present a measurement and simulation procedure that makes it possible to calibrate the heat transfer part of the numerical model separately from the mass transfer part. Furthermore, it is possible to identify the parts of the model that need to be improved. For this purpose, a modification of the well-known large temperature jump method is developed. The newly-introduced measurements are conducted under an inert N2 atmosphere, and the surface temperature of the sample is measured with an infrared sensor. We show that the procedure is applicable for two completely different types of samples: a loose grains configuration and a fibrous structure that is directly crystallized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A district heating (DH) system is one of the most important components of infrastructures in cold areas. Proper DH network design should balance the initial investment and the heat distribution cost of the DH network. Currently, this design is often based on a recommended value for specific pressure loss (R = ΔP/L) in the main lines. This will result in a feasible network design, but probably not be optimal in most cases. The paper develops a novel optimization model to facilitate the design by considering the initial investment in the pipes and the heat distribution costs. The model will generate all possible network scenarios consisting of different series of diameters for each pipe in the flow direction of the network. Then, the annuity on the initial investment, the heat distribution cost, and the total annual cost will be calculated for each network scenario, taking into account the uncertainties of the material prices and the yearly operating time levels. The model is applied to a sample DH network and the results indicate that the model works quite well, clearly identifying the optimal network design and demonstrating that the heat distribution cost is more important than the initial investment in DH network design. Electrothermal energy storage (ETES) provides bulk electricity storage based on heat pump and heat engine technologies. A subcritical ETES is described in this paper. Based on the extremum principle of entransy dissipation, a geometry model is developed for heat transfer optimization for subcritical ETES. The exergy during the heat transfer process is deduced in terms of entropy production. The geometry model is validated by the extremum principle of entropy production. The theoretical analysis results show that the extremum principle of entransy dissipation is an effective criterion for the optimization, and the optimum heat transfer for different cases with the same mass flux or pressure has been discussed. The optimum heat transfer can be achieved by adjusting the mass flux and pressure of the working fluid. It also reveals that with the increase of mass flux, there is a minimum exergy in the range under consideration, and the exergy decreases with the increase of the pressure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge concerning the complicated changes of mass and heat transfer is desired to improve the performance and durability of unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFCs). In this study, a transient, non-isothermal, single-phase, and multi-physics mathematical model for a URFC based on the proton exchange membrane is generated to investigate transient responses in the process of operation mode switching from fuel cell (FC) to electrolysis cell (EC). Various heat generation mechanisms, including Joule heat, reaction heat, and the heat attributed to activation polarizations, have been considered in the transient model coupled with electrochemical reaction and mass transfer in porous electrodes. The polarization curves of the steady-state models are validated by experimental data in the literatures. Numerical results reveal that current density, gas mass fractions, and temperature suddenly change with the sudden change of operating voltage in the mode switching process. The response time of temperature is longer than that of current density and gas mass fractions. In both FC and EC modes, the cell temperature and gradient of gas mass fraction in the oxygen side are larger than that in the hydrogen side. The temperature difference of the entire cell is less than 1.5 K. The highest temperature appears at oxygen-side catalyst layer under the FC mode and at membrane under a more stable EC mode. The cell is exothermic all the time. These dynamic responses and phenomena have important implications for heat analysis and provide proven guidelines for the improvement of URFCs mode switching. Vapour mass transfer is often underestimated when designing the bases for structures in frost susceptible soils. Intensive and long-term vapour transport may lead to excessive frost heaving and associated issues. A vapour transport model and the algorithm of its calculation is presented in this study based on the results of experimental freeze–thaw cycles of nine soil samples with varied density. The temperature field distribution, air voids volume and the energy comprising latent heat for the phase transition and heat extracted during the temperature drop are the main parameters for determining the vapour velocity and the amount of ice formed. According to the results, the average speed of vapour transport in frozen soils was about 0.4 m/h. The amount of ice built in 1 h during uniaxial freezing due to the saturated vapour pressure difference was 1.64 × 10−5–3.6 × 10−⁵ g/h in loose samples and 1.41 × 10−⁶ g/h to 5.61 × 10−⁷ g/h in dense samples of 10 cm diameter and 10 cm high sections. Power transmission covering long-distances has shifted from overhead high voltage cables to underground power cable systems due to numerous failures under severe weather conditions and electromagnetic pollution. The underground power cable systems are limited by the melting point of the insulator around the conductor, which depends on the surrounding soils' heat transfer capacity or the thermal conductivity. In the past, numerical and theoretical studies have been conducted based on the mechanistic heat and mass transfer model. However, limited experimental evidence has been provided. Therefore, in this study, we performed a series of experiments for static and cyclic thermal loads with a cylindrical heater embedded in the sand. The results suggest thermal charging of the surrounding dry sand and natural convection within the wet sand. A comparison of heat transfer for dry, unsaturated and fully saturated sand is presented with graphs and colour maps which provide valuable information and insight of heat and mass transfer around an underground power cable. In the face of increasing demands with regard to the share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix, adsorption chillers are becoming a potentially important part of the energy transition. A key component of this type of equipment is the heat exchanger in the adsorption bed, the design of which affects both heat and mass transfer. This study includes an analysis of the geometry and materials used to manufacture such heat exchangers. The geometry analysis is mainly based on the evaluation of the impact of the different dimensions of the exchanger components on heat and mass transfer in the bed. The second part of the study focuses on material-related issues where the main emphasis is on the analysis of the thermal inertia of the exchanger. The paper analyses the latest research on the design of exchangers in adsorption beds, mainly from 2015–2021. In this paper, the authors consider the processes of dynamic interaction between the boiling particles of the dispersed phase of the emulsion leading to the large droplet breakup. Differences in the consideration of forces that determine the breaking of non-boiling and boiling droplets have been indicated in the study. They have been determined by the possibility of using the model to define the processes of displacement, deformation, or fragmentation of the inclusion of the dispersed phase under the influence of a set of neighboring particles. The dynamics of bubbles in a compressible liquid with consideration for interfacial heat and mass transfer has also been analyzed in the paper. The effect of standard and system parameters on the intensity of cavitation processes is considered. Physical transformations during the cavitation treatment of liquid are caused not only by shock waves and radiated pressure pulses but also by extreme thermal effects. At the stage of ultimate bubble compression, vapor inside the bubble and the liquid in its vicinity transform into the supercritical fluid state. In this work, the problem of hydrodynamic, heat and mass transfer and stability in a salt gradient solar pond has been numerically studied by means of computational fluid dynamics in transient regime. The body of the simulated pond is an enclosure of height H and length L wherein an artificial salinity gradient is created in order to suppress convective motions induced by solar radiation absorption and to stabilize the solar pond during the period of operation. Here we show the distribution of velocity, temperature and salt concentration fields during energy collection and storage in a solar pond filled with water and constituted by three different salinity zones. The bottom of the pond is blackened and the free-surface is subjected to heat losses by convection, evaporation and radiation while the vertical walls are adiabatic and impermeable. The governing equations of continuity, momentum, thermal energy and mass transfer are discretized by finite-volume method in transient regime. Velocity vector fields show the presence of thin convective cells in the upper convective zone (UCZ) and large convective cells in the lower convective zone (LCZ). This study shows the importance of buoyancy ratio in the decrease of temperature in the UCZ and in the preservation of high temperature in the LCZ. It shows also the importance of the thickness of Non-Convective Zone (NCZ) in the reduction of the upwards heat losses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
