An air-based photovoltaic thermal collector (PVTC) is a system that generates both electricity and heat using air flowing over a photovoltaic (PV) module. This system offers the advantage of easy maintenance; however, it suffers from lower thermal efficiency compared to other PVTCs, mostly owing to the low heat capacity of air. Thus, this study introduces a novel PVTC incorporating dual ducts and semicircular turbulators, which were experimentally evaluated under actual weather conditions in the Republic of Korea. The proposed PVTC was compared with two other types of PVTC: one is a single-duct PVTC with semicircular turbulators, and the other is a dual-duct PVTC without turbulators. The results showed that the thermal efficiency of the proposed PVTC increased by approximately 88.7% compared to the single-duct PVTC with a turbulator and by 9.3% compared to the dual-duct PVTC without a turbulator. The electrical efficiency showed a slight decrease of about 7.2% compared to the single-duct PVTC but an increase of 1.4% compared to the dual-duct PVTC without a turbulator. Overall, the total efficiency of the proposed PVTC increased by 54.2% and 7.7% compared to the single-duct PVTC and the dual-duct PVTC without a turbulator, respectively. These experimental results demonstrate that attaching dual ducts and semicircular turbulators to an existing PVTC increases the daily thermal energy output, which ultimately enhances the total daily energy output. Achieving a quick temperature increase is a burning issue for biophysical applications, like germ inactivation and tumor ablation, and for energy performances, like solar collectors and steam generators. Based on the plasmon resonance phenomenon, noble metallic nanoparticles have emerged as promising weapons due to their very high biocompatibility, optical properties, and high surface-to-volume ratio, increasing energy conversion and allowing the maximum temperature to be reached faster. This work examines the energy conversion in sandwiched glassy platforms with gold nanorods. The platforms are kept vertically in the air and illuminated by a 0.5 W near-infrared laser (808 nm). To describe this aspect theoretically, the size and conversion efficiency of the electromagnetic properties are compromised between the proposed model and the stability of the nanorods. As a research approach, our model of cross-sections and polarizability for the surface effect is proposed, coupled with classical CFD numerical calculations. The results of the proposed model, validated by a thermal camera and spectroscopy measurements, indicate that as long as the energy conversion is visible with relatively low-power lasers (ΔT = 18.5 °C), the platforms do not offer fast heat dissipation. The results indicate that, despite the flow forcing by the air inflow, the entropy generation due to heat conduction is more than three orders higher than the dynamic entropy production. Flow forcing corresponds to the value of the velocity for classical convective motions. The two-phase countercurrent flow limitation (CCFL) in horizontal channels is important in relation to nuclear reactor safety. In this study, we aim to investigate the CCFL characteristics and the flow behaviors in horizontal circular pipes with small diameters. The effects of pipe diameter and the water head in the upper plenum on CCFL characteristics are experimentally studied. An image-processing technique and statistical treatments are implemented to analyze the horizontal countercurrent flow. The results show that the CCFL characteristics for the horizontal circular pipes with small diameters can be well correlated using the dimensionless parameters, which are based on adding fluid viscosity to the Wallis parameters. The CCFL characteristics are significantly affected by the pipe diameter and are slightly affected by the water head above the horizontal pipe. The gas–liquid interface fluctuates with certain periods, and flow pattern transitions happen in the horizontal air–water countercurrent flow. As the air flow rate increases, the occurrence location of the liquid slug appears to shift towards the water entrance. The energy harnessing from flow-induced vibrations (FIV) by an oscillating foil placed tandemly behind a circular cylinder (which serves as a vortex generator) is investigated. The foil is submerged in the wake produced by the fixed cylinder and could oscillate in the direction perpendicular to the incoming flow with single-degree freedom. The spacing ratio ranges from 1.0 to 5.0. The oncoming fluid velocity is U = 1–10 m/s, corresponding to the reduced velocity Ur = 3.81–38.08 and the Reynolds number Re = 9.58 × 103–9.58 × 104. Four harnessing damping ratios (ζharness = 0.0054–0.0216) are used to simulate the energy conversion conditions. The main conclusions are: (1) The optimal oscillation pattern related to the highest harnessed energy emerges as the spacing ratio close to 1.0. (2) The airflow energy converted by the foil is positively correlated with the harnessing damping ratio because the amplitude responses are similar at various harnessing damping ratios. A high velocity yields the highest harnessed power. (3) The harnessing efficiency of the foil could reach 48.89%, which is much more than that of an isolated flapping foil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) powered by a compressed air power system is proposed to address challenges for battery/motor-powered vehicles under high-speed navigation, long endurance, and high mobility. These vehicles actively utilize supercavitation drag reduction by the exhausted gas from the compressed air power system. MATLAB/Simulink and FLUENT are used to establish theoretical models of the compressed air power system and ventilation supercavitation. The relationship between system power and navigation resistance is examined with different air flows, along with a comparison of endurance of different power vehicles at various speeds. The issue of the endurance-enhancing effect of supercavitation at high speed is investigated. The results demonstrate that increasing the air flow leads to higher power and reduced navigation resistance, and there is a balance between them. Furthermore, compared to the battery-powered vehicles with equal energy storage capacity, the compressed air power system shows 210.08% to 458.20% longer endurance times at speeds of 30 kn to 60 kn. Similarly, considering equal energy storage mass, it achieves 42.02% to 148.96% longer endurance times at high speeds (30 kn to 60 kn). The integration of supercavitation and air-powered systems can greatly enhance the endurance and maneuverability of the vehicle at high speeds while ensuring a compact system structure. Air compressors are widely used in industrial fields. Compressed air systems aggregate air flows and then supply them to places of demand. These huge systems consume a significant amount of energy and generate heat internally. Machine components in compressed air systems are vulnerable to heat, and, in particular, a radiator to cool the heat of the overall air compressor is the core component. Dirty radiators increase energy consumption due to anomalous cooling. To reduce the energy consumption of air compressors, this mechanism emphasizes a machine learning-based radiator fault detection, using features such as RPM, motor power, outlet pressure, air flow, water pump power, and outlet temperature with slight true fault labels. Moreover, the proposed system adds an LSTM-based motor power prediction model to point out the initial judgment of radiator fault possibility. Via the rigorous analysis and the comparison among machine learning models, this meticulous approach improves the performance of radiator fault prediction up to 93.0%, and decreases the mean power consumption of the air compressor around 2.24%. Air velocity is one of the key parameters affecting the sensation of thermal comfort. In mixing ventilation, the air is most often supplied above the occupied zone, and the air movement in a room is caused by jets that generate recirculating flows. An effective tool for predicting airflow in a room is CFD numerical modeling. In order to reproduce the air velocity distribution, it is essential to select a proper turbulence model. In this paper, seven Eddy–Viscosity RANS turbulence models were used to carry out CFD simulations of a sidewall air jet supplied into a room through a wall diffuser. The goal was to determine which model was the most suitable to adopt in this type of airflow. The CFD results were validated using experimental data by comparing the gross and integral parameters, along with the parameters of the quasi-free jet model. The numerical results obtained for Std k-ε and EVTM models were most consistent with the measurements. Their error values slightly exceeded 15%. On the contrary, the k-ω and RNG k-ε models did not reproduce the quasi-free jet parameters correctly. The research findings can prove beneficial for simulating air distribution in supplied air jets during the initial conceptual phases of HVAC system design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aerodynamic shapes of the blades are of great importance in wind turbine design to achieve better overall turbine performance. Fluid–structure interaction (FSI) analyses are normally carried out to take into consideration the effects due to the loads between the air flow and the turbine structures. A structural integrity check can then be performed, and the structural/material design can be optimized accordingly. In this study, three different tip shapes are investigated based on the original blade of the test wind turbine (Phase VI) from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). A one-way coupled simulation of FSI is conducted, and results with a focus on stresses and deformations along the span of the blade are investigated. The results show that tip modifications of the blade have the potential to effectively increase the power generation of wind turbines while ensuring adequate structural strength. Furthermore, instead of using more complicated but computationally expensive techniques, this study demonstrates an effective approach to making quality observations of this highly nonlinear phenomenon for wind turbine blade design. In this article, the control of a DC/DC converter was carried out using the proposed methods of conventional PI, PSO-based PI, PSO-based FOPI, GA-based PI, and GA-based FOPI controllers in order to improve the performance of PEMFCs. Simulink models of a PEMFC model with two inputs—hydrogen consumption and oxygen air flow—and with controllers were developed. Then, the outputs of a system based on conventional PI were compared with the proposed methods. IAE, ISTE, and ITAE were employed as fitness functions in optimization algorithms such as PSO and GA. Fitness function value, maximum overshoot, and rising time were utilized as metrics to compare the performance of the methods. PI and FOPI parameters were optimized with the proposed methods and the results were compared with traditional PI in which the optimum parameters were determined by an empirical approach. This research study indicates that the proposed methods perform better than the conventional PI method. However, it becomes apparent that the GA-FOPI approach outperforms the others. The simulation result also shows that the PEMFC model with conventional PI and FOPI controllers in which the controller parameters are tuned using PSO and GA has an acceptable control performance. This paper presents methodologies and equipment for SI-traceable inline measurements of water content (a critical quality parameter) in solid biofuels. Inline measurement systems for water content are commonly used at CHP plants, providing continuous real-time data. However, the accuracy of these systems is in most cases unsatisfactory, mainly because the systems are not calibrated representatively for the relevant material, and until now, calibrations traceable to the SI system have not been available. To provide reliable and accurate inline water content data, new procedures and equipment for calibrating measurement systems were developed. Two reference methods for the determination of water content were developed; one measures the airflow and dewpoint of desorbed water in the air passing a test sample, while the other uses a P2O₅-sensor. Additionally, a transfer standard based on a cavity resonance sensor was developed for fast onsite calibration of the inline sensor at the power plant. This new instrument allows for quick and accurate measurements. The transfer standard is made metrologically traceable to the primary measurement standards. The entire system was demonstrated by calibrating an inline microwave-based (MW) sensor at the CHP plant of VERDO in Randers, Denmark. With the increasing popularity of yachting sports and races comes the need to develop a more advanced and efficient propulsion device. Significant improvement can be made when using a mainly lift-driven propulsion source, known as a wing sail. This idea, dating back as far as the mid-70s, is nowadays regaining interest as a propulsion system in multihull, high-performance racing vessels (for instance, the AC50 and AC72 America's Cup yacht classes). This article documents 2D and 3D numerical analyses of wing sail systems imitating those of an AC72 racing yacht class. It depicts methods employed in two- and three-dimensional steady-state flow simulations, compares systems equipped with various geometries of mainsails, and details a comprehensive examination of the airflow around the vessel using spatial analyses. Numerical calculations were carried out using ANSYS CFX and ANSYS Fluent (with overset feature) for 2D and 3D models, respectively. All simulations were conducted under conditions similar to those acting on the real system, i.e., high Reynolds number (order of magnitude 106 to 107) and atmospheric boundary layer (in the 3D model). Passive solar systems are one of most important strategies to reduce the heating loads of buildings. The Trombe–Michel (TM) wall and its variants are some of the better-known structures in the field of solar systems. An alternative to the TM wall is the Barra–Costantini (BC) system. In the present paper, CFD numerical simulations, both in steady and transient states, of modified BC and TM walls were carried out in the winter season. Different interspace thicknesses were simulated in order to evaluate their effects on the temperature field and air velocity, and the numerical results were compared among them. It was found that the BC system offers greater hot air flow compared with the TM wall; the mass flow rate increased up to 43% in the BC system and up 28% in the TM system when the interlayer thickness was increased by 500%. The transient simulations (100 h simulated) demonstrated that the dynamic response of the BC wall was shorter than that of the TM wall, even when the TM wall was simulated with initial thermal conditions that were more advantageous than those for the BC wall. The BC system reached a periodic stabilized regime within 24 h, whereas the TM system failed to stabilize in 100 h. The results show that for both TM and BC structures, the interlayer thickness scarcely influenced the temperature of the environment reached (the temperature peak increased up to 3–4% as the interlayer thickness was increased by 500%), while larger air speed changes were observed in the BC system in the transient state compared with the TM system. Thus, in the TM system, the outlet air velocity was practically constant as the interlayer thickness was increased; in contrast, the outlet velocity peak increased up to 50% in the BC system. The air compressor holds paramount importance due to its significant energy consumption when compared to other Balance of Plant components of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The air supply system, in turn, plays a critical role in ensuring the stable and efficient operation of the entire fuel cell system. To enhance system efficiency, the impact of varying the stoichiometric ratio of air and air pressure was observed. This investigation was carried out under real loading conditions, replicating the conditions experienced by the power module when fuel cells are in use within a forklift. The air compressor can be operated at different pressure and excess air ratios, which in turn influence both the fuel cell's performance and the overall efficiency of the power module system. Our research focused on assessing the performance of PEM fuel cells under different load cycles, adhering to the VDI60 requirements for forklift applications. This comprehensive examination encompassed the system's minimum and maximum load scenarios, with the primary goal of optimizing excess air and pressure ratio parameters, especially under dynamic load conditions. The results revealed that higher air pressures and lower excess air ratios were conducive to increasing system efficiency, shedding light on potential avenues for enhancing the performance of PEM fuel cell systems in forklift applications. In this paper, a three-dimensional turbulent fluid dynamics numerical model of a 311 MVA full hydroelectric power plant unit is made, using the finite element method, to study and understand the ozone transport mechanisms inside the enclosured electric machine structure. In the real world, ozone is produced by partial discharges related to faults on stator bars. In order to analyse ozone transport from localised sources, a 3D fluid dynamic model of a complete hydrogenerator in operation is developed and presented for the first time. The model has a high level of geometric detail. Furthermore, a new proposal to simplify the modelling of radiators is implemented and validated. The modelled structure is based on a Campos Novos hydrogenerator electric machine and it consists of 378 coil-type stator bars made of copper covered by mica and, more externally, by a semiconductor coating layer. Other parts are also represented, including the stator core and air directors made of stainless steel, copper radiators, the rotor with its epoxy surface, and the concrete floor and concrete external walls. In the fluid dynamics model, a finite element mesh was designed to represent the air regions inside the hydrogenerator and the material surfaces that react with ozone (with their respective reaction rates), where the airflow and ozone transport are modelled using the Navier–Stokes equations and the mass conservation law. Partial discharge sources are represented by ozone sources with prismatic shapes, placed on surfaces of stator bars. Ozone concentrations have been calculated inside and around the generator machine. The rotor radius is 3.8075 m and its rotation frequency is 200 RPM. Radial air velocity due to interpole ventilation is also considered (2.2 m/s, as experimentally verified in loco. The radial velocity in the vicinity of the radiators is 3 m/s. It has been concluded that the ozone transport profile is influenced by the source positioning on the stator bars in such a way that source pinpointing is possible and it depends on determining the local and global maxima areas of ozone concentration at the radiators. R134a, a vehicle refrigerant used in the vehicle heat pump system, is regulated according to the Montreal Protocol. Refrigerants such as R1234yf, R744, and R290 in vehicle heat pump systems are being investigated to identify their alternatives. Because developing a new system exclusively for new refrigerants is costly, an empirical test was conducted on the R1234yf refrigerant in a heat pump system designed for the R134a refrigerant in an actual vehicle system. The heating, cooling, and battery-cooling modes were tested for the amount of refrigerant charge, and operability tests were conducted for the compressor load; heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) air flow rate; coolant temperature; and flow rate of each mode. The optimal refrigerant charge in heating mode was 0.7 kg, and the optimal refrigerant charge in the cooling and battery-cooling modes was 0.9 kg. To yield the highest coefficient of performance of the system, the compressor load was 50%, the HVAC fan was 12 V, and the coolant flow rate was 10 LPM. The most efficient system operation was possible at a coolant temperature of 30 °C in the cooling and heating modes and at 20 °C in battery-cooling mode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The thermal performance of a lithium-ion battery module comprising three cells contained within a casing was investigated at discharge rates of 3C and 5C with three different cooling strategies: forced air, phase-change material (PCM), and a hybrid system using a combination of forced air and the PCM. Three levels of fan speed (5000 rpm; 7000 rpm; and 9000 rpm) for cooling air flow were considered. A numerical simulation of heat transfer was performed using the ANSYS Fluent software. The electrochemical modelling of a battery was developed based on the NTGK approach, and the phase-change phenomenon was treated as an enthesis–porosity problem. The composite PCM, aluminum metal foam embedded in n-octadecane, had better heat dissipation performance than forced air convection. The PCM is significantly more effective at heat dissipation than forced air. Interestingly, when using a hybrid cooling system that combines forced air and a PCM, although it meets the operational requirements for Li-ion batteries in regard to maximum temperature and temperature uniformity at a 3C discharge rate, the airflow appears to have a negligible effect on thermal management and yields an indiscernible change in temperature. This can be attributed to a complex flow pattern that developed in a casing as a result of the suboptimal design of the inlet and outlet. This paper presents an application of the Simulink stvmgain S-function for the thermal modelling of a building zone based on the resistance–capacitance scheme of EN ISO 13790. That model in the form of the state-space matrix with time-varying elements was used in simulations of a building with hourly and, suggested in that standard, daily averaged ventilation airflow in five European cities. The following two ventilation schedules were used: occupancy-based; and wind-dependent. Comparative simulations were conducted in EnergyPlus. In general, the results obtained for the annual heating and cooling demand were better for hourly than daily averaged ventilation with an error below 10%. However, in several cases of cooling, the error was above 30%. When considering hourly indoor air temperatures, the proposed method provided very good results with MAE of up to 0.52 °C and 0.46 °C, RMSE < 0.69 °C and 0.62 °C, and CV(RMSE) < 3.09% and 2.75% for the daily averaged and hourly ventilation flow, respectively. For wind-driven ventilation, the temperatures were as follows: MAE < 0.49 °C and 0.48 °C; RMSE < 0.69 °C and 0.68 °C; and CV(RMSE) < 3.01% and 2.97%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the crucial role of ventilation systems in mitigating cross-infections, especially in infectious-disease hospitals. This study introduces a dual-design operation ventilation system that can operate under two sets of ventilation conditions for normal and epidemic times. A challenge is optimizing duct diameters for required airflow while maintaining hydraulic balance. We designed an improved genetic algorithm with an adaptive penalty factor and velocity constraint, as well as the improved crossover probability and mutation probability. The improved genetic algorithm is suitable for ventilation system networks, which can find a better combination of air duct diameters to improve the hydraulic balance rate and reduce the usage of air valves, resulting in efficient hydraulic balancing commissioning. A supply air ventilation system of an actual hospital in China was selected as a case study, and the number of imbalanced air ducts was reduced from 14 to 4. Compared with the traditional genetic algorithm, it has a faster search speed and a better global search ability, which is effective for the optimal design of ventilation system networks. To study the heat and mass transfer characteristics of an evaporative cooler for cooling high-temperature working fluids, an experimental device of the evaporative cooler was built, and a corresponding test system was constructed. Then, the experimental study was carried out based on an orthogonal experimental design, and the law and extent of the influence of water flow in the tube, the spray water flow rate, the inlet water temperature in the tube, and the air flow rate on the heat dissipation, cooling efficiency, and heat and mass transfer coefficients were obtained. The correlation equations of the heat and mass transfer coefficients were obtained by fitting the orthogonal experimental data, and the validity of the correlation equations was confirmed by the verification experiment. The improved delayed detached Eddy simulation (IDDES) approach used in the part I of this investigation to study the self-ignition and combustion of hydrogen jets in a high-speed transverse flow of hot vitiated air in a duct is extended in the following directions: (i) the wall boundary conditions are modified to take into account the optical windows employed in the experiments; (ii) the detailed chemical kinetic model with 19 reactions is used; (iii) a nonlinear turbulence model is implemented in the code to capture the secondary flows in the duct corners; (iv) the wall roughness model is adapted; (v) the synthetic turbulence generator is imposed upstream of the fuel injection. As a result of improving the mathematical and physical problem statements, a good agreement between the simulation and the experimental database obtained at the LAERTE workbench (ONERA) is achieved. The airtightness of a building has a significant impact on energy savings, structural longevity, and indoor air quality for occupants. Therefore, it is essential to accurately measure the airtightness of buildings, though the widely used fan pressurization method suffers from several shortcomings. For this reason, transient methods have recently emerged to assess airtightness by monitoring pressure changes over time, but studies using transient methods in this field are rare. In this study, we selected three representative buildings to conduct field tests to verify the practical applicability of the improved transient method. To verify the results of the transient method, we conducted a comparison experiment with the blower door test: a widely used measurement method. When measuring the effective leakage area, the average standard deviation of the transient method was 0.903 cm2, which was much smaller than the blower door test result of 1.488 cm2. In addition, the recorded standard errors ranged from 0.197 cm2 to 0.816 cm2 for the transient method and from 0.269 cm2 to 1.801 cm2 for the blower door test. Notably, the transitional method was more reproducible than the blower door test while showing similar accuracy. For many years, technological progress has been observed in the field of minimizing energy consumption by devices and increasing the efficiency of energy generation from freely available sources. Energy harvesting (EH) is one of the ways to increase the energy available in vehicles. The manuscript presents the results of a series of laboratory tests carried out in a wind tunnel using a 1:10 scale model of an SUV. The aim of the tests was to measure the air velocity in the footsteps of the car. The speed field has been identified at more than 188,000 points in the space behind or next to the car, considering the symmetry of the vehicle. The total energy was aggregated for 2760 points in a vertical plane perpendicular to the plane of symmetry. From the tests carried out, it was found that the highest speed was achieved just behind the trunk of the car, at a distance of about 20% of the length of the car. The thermal performance of building envelopes is significantly affected by building insulation and airtightness. However, most studies have focused on improving thermal performance in building envelopes, while few studies on improving airtightness in buildings have been conducted. The present study measured airtightness and infiltration in non-residential buildings using fan pressurization and tracer gas methods. By analyzing the results obtained from both methods, the distribution of the correlation factors was identified, which can be used for the air leakage rates obtained from the blower door test to estimate the infiltration rates under natural airflow conditions. Since it is difficult to get the values of ACH50 through the blower door test in buildings of large volume or where large air leakages occur, the study proposed a method to convert the values of airtightness under several low-pressure differences of 20 Pa, 25 Pa, 30 Pa and 35 Pa into ACH50 using conversion coefficient. By dividing the air leakage rate under 20 Pa pressure difference by the conversion coefficient of 0.60, the values of ACH50 can be estimated. Results converted to ACH50 using conversion coefficient for various pressure differences of 20 Pa, 25 Pa, 30 Pa, and 35 Pa showed an error of 0.1–4.4%, respectively, compared to actual ACH50 measurement results. Data centers must implement green low-carbon energy efficiency management to improve energy efficiency, reduce energy waste and carbon emissions, and achieve sustainable development. As a result, an intelligent management strategy for dynamic energy efficiency of data center networks with Artificial Intelligence (AI) fitting control is proposed. Firstly, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network is used for long sequence trend prediction to predict the temperature of the data center in the next sequence using the temperature of the past 15 sequences and the power consumption of the equipment as parameters. Then, based on the prediction results, the intelligent air conditioning controller based on Deep Q-Network (DQN) is designed to update the parameters by using the gradient of double-Q network and error backpropagation, and the optimal control action is selected by using the ε-greedy strategy to ensure that the prediction of the hotspot does not occur. Experiments show that the average absolute errors of temperature prediction for supply air, return air, cold aisle as well as hot aisle are 0.32 °C, 0.21 °C, 0.36 °C and 0.19 °C, respectively. The Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) decreased by an average of 2.6% and 2.5%, respectively. In the context of the energy crisis and global warming, improving thermal efficiency is the most important issue in research on gasoline engines, and lean mixture combustion strategy is becoming the most promising method. Thus, a high compression ratio, a high-power interval ignition system, and a stratified combustion scheme achieved via dual injection were novelly adopted in a single cylinder gasoline engine in this study. The results show that the lean combustion limit could be literally extended and improved thermal efficiency was observed under the ultra-lean condition. Meanwhile, reverse combustion performance trends were observed by altering the second injection proportion from 30% to 45% under the lean condition (λ = 1.6) and ultra-lean condition (λ = 1.9). This was related to a combustion velocity change caused by great concentration gradient at the middle and end combustion stage. Finally, according to research on the effects of altering the timing of the second injection, it is clear that the dual injection strategy is an ideal method for realizing operation under the lean condition (λ = 1.6). But for the operation under the ultra-lean condition (λ = 1.9), more injection times and suitable air flow organization are needed to enhance the robustness of mixture distribution. In the present study, experimental investigation is carried out on two different kinds of packing materials (fills). PVC fills that are traditionally used in the industry are compared and analyzed against the cellulose-based paper fills. Different mass flow rates of air are used to study the effect of the flow rate of air on the forced draft cooling tower. The volume flow rate of water also varied, and the range of the cooling tower, along with efficiency, was analyzed. Along with these two parameters, the effect of inlet water temperature on the performance of the tower was studied. Cooling tower efficiency was plotted against different L/G ratios ranging from 0.95 to 7.67. Results showed that the type of packing has a significant impact on the cooling tower performance. Paper fills gave a maximum cooling tower efficiency and range equal to 93.12% and 16.5 °C, respectively. The optimal L/G ratio range of 0.96 to 1.44 was identified as the point at which the cooling tower demonstrated its highest performance. The effect of the mass flow rate of water on the performance of the tower was far greater compared to the volume flow rate of water and inlet water temperature. The paper fills are found to be most effective under current experimental conditions, and the same can be implemented in the industrial towers under a wide spectrum of inlet water temperatures, mass flow rates of air, and volume flow rates of water. This review addresses the current state of research into active control and suppression of vortex rope in hydroturbines under off-design operating conditions. Only active control methods that can be "switched on" when required under off-design operating conditions are considered in this work. The review focuses on air addition into the flow, as well as various auxiliary fluid jets. It includes all the best practices for vortex rope suppression in numerical and experimental studies. It can be inferred from the review that a modern flow control system should be comprehensive, designed for a specific hydroturbine geometry, and obtain feedback from the flow. Injecting ~2% of air from the impeller fairing cone appears optimal for suppressing pressure pulsations without significant efficiency loss. The cost of air injection is rarely estimated, but the use of an automatic venting system can minimize overheads and potentially improve efficiencies at low gas contents. Fluid jets ranging from 3% to 12% of the main flow rate can efficiently suppress pressure pulsations, but their high energy requirements limit their use. Azimuthal perturbation of the flow appears promising as it does not require significant energy loss, but practical implementation remains challenging as one needs to accurately know the system dynamics and be capable of real-time manipulation of the flow. A non-tubular prototype cavity receiver absorber with extended internal surfaces (fins) is proposed to enhance heat transfer in Stirling engine-based Concentrated Solar Power systems. There is limited research on the realization of downsized absorbers in terms of their design and manufacturing. The objective of the absorber solution proposed in this paper is to address the issue of inadequate comprehension regarding the impacts of the geometric and flow parameters on thermohydraulic efficiency. These impacts are numerically investigated in a 100 mm long heat transfer channel with a 10 mm × 10 mm section. The prototype absorber is fabricated using a wire electrode-discharging manufacturing approach, and is experimentally investigated using the enthalpy method. Numerical results indicate that heat transfer to the working fluid in the novel absorber can reach 482 W at the reasonable cost of 0.391% pressure drop per 100 mm (air flow at 0.0015 kg/s and 5 bar). In the experimental investigation, the prototype realizes a 1113.033 W heat transfer rate at 8 bar and 12 kg/h. This implies that a non-tubular design with extended internal surfaces can increase the internal surface area to enhance heat transfer while downsizing the volume to reduce heat loss. The resistance of solid-separated solid wastes (SSDWs) to moderate airflow ranging from 0.05 to 0.30 m3/s-m2 was measured at various bed depths and moisture levels. The pressure drop across a loose-fill fixed bed column was observed to increase more rapidly with increasing airflow rates than with increasing bed depths. An increase in the moisture content (10 percentage points) caused a decrease in the pressure drop by an average of 13.2–17.0%, evaluated within a 10–40% moisture content (MC) range. A full-factorial model analysis using standard least squares was used to describe the main effects and interactions of the test parameters in predicting the pressure drop. The Hukill and Ives nonlinear model was able to accurately describe the airflow resistance data of SSDWs at various MCs. Heat storage in systems integrated with renewable energy sources in facilities can reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, cut maintenance costs, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions from buildings and other objects. One of the possible solutions is the use of a stone heat accumulator for short-term heat storage and the use of this deposit in the ventilation process of the facility. During short-term air flow through the porous material from which an accumulator bed is made, there is an exchange of heat and mass between the flowing air and the bed particles. In the long term, the use of an accumulator can lead to an increase in dust and the development of pathogenic microorganisms, endangering human life and health. Therefore, understanding the factors influencing the efficient use of a stone deposit is very important. The aim of this study is to calculate the changes in thermal-mass parameters in the air flowing out of the stone accumulator and to assess the effect of long-term stone accumulator use on the content of microorganisms and dust concentration in bioaerosol. The application of the heat storage system in the stone bed leads to the formation of strictly controlled microclimatic conditions, and the tested air does not constitute a threat to the people staying in the object. The concentration standards of PM10 and PM2.5 exceeded the limit values (PM2.5 = 20 μg∙m−3 and PM10 = 40 μg∙m−3), and, thus, the air in the studied greenhouse was classified as polluted. The analysis also showed that, for the analyzed conditions, a 20% increase in the initial temperature of the accumulator bed results in a nearly 20% increase in the outlet air temperature. Keeping a certain constant airflow in a lot of applications is critical, such as certain airflow volumes in the cabin of an aircraft, submarines, tunnels, and buildings. All fans change their output airflow and air pressure by changing motor speed in real applications. In order to achieve the target airflow volume, normal operation detects the data first, then provides orders to engineers to adjust manually. Extra airflow volume sensors are equipped to measure the airflow so that people know what the current airflow is and how much needs to be adjusted. Based on normal technology, airflow volume sensors and motor speed inverters are necessary parts of a whole air supply system. This research tries to integrate a fuzzy control algorithm into a motor control technology to build a new kind of fan that can not only self-detect the airflow volume changes but also can self-adjust the airflow volumes automatically. This self-detecting and adjusting fan can lead air supply systems in devices and buildings to need no airflow volume sensors, make the air supply system building cost lower, and make the maintaining and operating cost lower. This research investigates the fluid flow characterization and thermohydraulic performances (THP) of rib surfaces, using computational and experimental methods. ANSYS computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software was used to predict and validate the findings in the experimental setup. Artificial rib surfaces, including polygonal and forward trapezoidal-shaped ribs, were placed in the absorber plate at different relative pitch distances (p/e) = 6.7, 10, 13.4 and relative height (e/d) = 20, and the mass flow rate of air (working fluid) varied at Reynolds numbers ranging from 2000 to 20,000. According to the validation results, the RNG renormalization k-ε model was selected for the investigation. The results show that strong turbulence occured closer to the wall surface and behind the rib surface, enhancing thermal performances due to the sharp edge shape of the rib. A polygonal rib with a pitch distance of p/e = 6.7 achieved a higher Nusselt number (Nu) and thermohydraulic performance of 2.95 at Re 4000. An empirical correlation between the Nusselt number (Nu) and friction factor (f) was developed using linear regression analysis and was compared with the predicted values. A compact off-road machine tends to have a compact engine structure, which may result in small clearances between the main engine, the cooling system, and the radiator. In the design of its cooling system, the heat exchanger, fan, and conveyor are normally chosen based on their fixed operating point. Unfortunately, these machines work in variable conditions and the performance of each component is different when they are working as a whole under the hood. The aim of this work is to optimize the position of these components through a parametric analysis of some variables, using the Computational Fluid Dynamics technique. The air flows are analyzed in order to show the pressure waves created by the air moved by the fan blades, showing how the fluid interacts with the engine. The results show that optimizing this installation can increase the efficiency of the fan by 10% and reduce the noise emitted by 13 dB. These results should sensitize designers to use CFD analyses, not for a single component, but for the entire system. The solar collector is used to convert solar energy into thermal energy. First, the internal energy of the absorber increases, which is reflected in the increase in its temperature. This energy is transferred to the working fluid in direct contact with the absorber. Depending on the type of fluid, liquid or air solar collectors are distinguished. When the flow of the working medium takes place naturally, without the support of pumps or fans, the solar collector is treated as a passive device. The gravitational movement of air in the inner space of an air solar collector depends on its construction and its spatial orientation in relation to both the source of radiation and the direction of the force of gravity. This paper describes the results of laboratory experimental tests of a prototype passive air solar collector, including: the influence of radiation intensity and the deflection of the solar collector from the vertical on the increase in the temperature of the air flowing through the collector, the mass flow rate of the air and the efficiency of the device. The tests were carried out using an air solar collector with the dimensions 2080 × 1040 × 180 (height × width × thickness) and radiation intensity in the range of I = 0 ÷ 550 W/m2. The objective of this article is to address the challenges associated with visualizing air flow over a heating source in an open laboratory environment. The study uses a combination of experimental visualization and numerical simulation techniques to generate a 3D model of the air flow and heat transfer between the heating source and the environment via natural convection. The Particle Image Velocimetry method is used to experimentally visualize the air flow, which is known for its benefits of high speed and accuracy, and for its ability to avoid disturbing the flow of the fluid being investigated. The data obtained from this experimental method are used as input for numerical simulations using the Ansys Fluent program. The numerical simulations identify air vortices and other elements that disrupt the airflow in the laboratory environment. The resulting 3D model accurately represents the actual situation in the laboratory and could be further optimized by adjusting parameters such as the output of the heater and the heating source temperature. These parameters play a crucial role in ensuring thermal comfort in the laboratory environment, which is of utmost importance for user comfort. The exploitation of natural resources is associated with many natural hazards. Currently, the copper ore deposits exploited in Polish mines are located at a depth of about 1200 m below the surface. The primary temperature of the rocks in the exploited areas reaches 48  ∘ C, which constitutes a major source of heat flux to the mine air. However, another important source of heat is the machine plant, which mainly consists of machines powered by diesel engines. Following the results of in situ measurements, boundary conditions for a simulation were determined and a geometric model of the cabin was created. Furthermore, an average human model was created, whose radiative heat transfer was included in the analysis. Three cases were studied: the first covering the current state of thermal conditions, based on the measurement results, and two cases of forecast conditions. In the second case, the temperature of the conditioned air was determined, and in the third, the flow velocity required to ensure thermal comfort was found. The results of the simulation indicated that for the microclimatic conditions established based on the measurements (ambient air temperature in the excavation 35.0  ∘ C, air-conditioned airflow 2.4 × 10 − 2  m 3 /s, and temperature 10.0  ∘ C), the temperature of the air inside the air-conditioned operator's cabin would be 20.4  ∘ C. Based on the personal mean vote (PMV) index, it was concluded that the thermal sensation would range from neutral to slightly cool, which confirmed the legitimacy of the actions taken to reduce the adverse impact of the microclimatic conditions on workers in the workplace. However, for the case of predicted conditions of enhanced heat flux from strata and machinery, resulting in an average ambient temperature increased to 38.0  ∘ C, it would be necessary to lower the temperature of air from the air conditioner to 8.00  ∘ C or increase the flow rate to 3.14 × 10 − 2  m 3 /s to maintain thermal comfort at the same level of PMV index. This study discusses the influence of natural wind on the air flow of air-cooled condensers (ACCs) and then proposes a partition speed-regulation strategy for a fan group with enhanced generalized capability, which is of great practical significance for optimizing energy-saving operations. The stochastic time-varying features of natural wind are characterized by sine–Gaussian, Weibull, and composed winds. In a natural wind disturbance, using the Sugon Supercomputing Center, the transient numerical simulation of the dynamic evolution of the ACC flow field was found: the dynamic system of air flow is a typical time-varying nonlinear process. Cluster analysis was used to extract the nonlinear features of air flow, divide the fan group into four subregions with generalization capability, and implement a partitioned speed operation. It was found that giving priority to increasing the fan speed in the headwind partition can suppress the natural wind disturbance and improve the overall air flow, thus reducing the fan speed in the leeward partition, which reduces the overall air flow loss. The dynamic characteristics of the fan group obtained from the simulation and the proposed fan partition method can guide the optimized energy-saving operation of ACCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this research sustainable refrigerants are tested as filler gases in Transparent Thermal Insulation (TTI) for the first time. These are compared with pig fat, a readily available material with good thermal inertia that is proposed as an organic phase change material (PCM). The aim of this paper is to compare the thermal behaviour of a Hybrid Air Conditioning System (HACS) with TTI filled with R134a, R1233zd and a pig-fat-based PCM. Numerical simulations using the OPAQUE 3 program and two online platforms are used to evaluate the possible application of TTI and PCM as passive systems. Additionally, three TTI models are used to simulate the heat transfer processes of TTI, PCM and R134a. The velocity of the flow in the air gap is also analysed numerically in both laminar and turbulent states. For the assessment, infrared thermographic imagery is used to measure the temperatures in the HACS, giving values of 46.17 °C by day and 38.05 °C at night. The results show that the heat loss and heat gain in the combination TTI filled with refrigerants and pig-fat-based PCM are between 2.22 and 1.51 W/m2. In addition, the HACS was able to keep a small box warm during the night. The flow in the air gap of the HACS can be controlled by installing Ni-Ti wire actuators with a cooling temperature of 23 °C and a heating temperature of 70 °C. The Ni-Ti wire actuators can open and close the dampers at 23 °C and 51 °C, respectively. By installing a 5-watt solar-power fan, the velocity of the flow in the air gap in the HACS can be increased, thus improving the efficiency of the system. Similar to parafoils, ram-air kites are flexible membrane wings inflated by the apparent wind and supported by a bridle line system. A major challenge in estimating the performance of these wings using a computer model is the strong coupling between the airflow around the wing and the deformation of the membrane structure. In this paper, we introduce a staggered coupling scheme combining a structural finite element solver using a dynamic relaxation technique with a potential flow solver. The developed method proved numerically stable for determining the equilibrium shape of the wing under aerodynamic load and is thus suitable for performance measurement and load estimation. The method was validated with flight data provided by SkySails Power. Measured forces on the tether and steering belt of the robotic kite control pod showed good resemblance with the simulation results. As expected for a potential flow solver, the kite's glide ratio was overestimated by 10–15%, and the measured tether elevation angle in a neutral flight scenario matched the simulations within 2 degrees. Based on the obtained results, it can be concluded that the proposed aero-structural model can be used for initial designs of ram-air kites with application to airborne wind energy. Various external-recycle configurations of multi-pass flat-plate solar air collectors were studied theoretically to examine the optimal thermal performance under the same working dimension and operation conditions. An absorber plate and insulation sheet were implemented horizontally and vertically, respectively, into an open rectangular conduit to conduct a recycling four-pass operation, which the device lengthens the air flow channel and increases the air mass flow rate within the collector, and thus, a more heat transfer efficiency is obtained. Four recycling types with different external-recycle patterns were introduced and expected to augment the heat transfer rate due to the turbulent convective intensity through four subchannels in the present study. Coupling energy balances into one-dimensional modeling equations were derived by making the energy-flow diagram within a finite element, which the longitudinal temperature distributions for each subchannel were obtained. The theoretical predictions show that the improved four-pass device is accomplished due to the multiple heating pathways over and under the absorber plate, from which the turbulence intensity augmentation results in the heat transfer rate as compared to that in the device without inserting the absorber plate and insulation sheet (say a downward-type single-pass solar air collector). The theoretical results also show that the external-recycle configuration (say Type C in the present study) acts as an optimal collector thermal efficiency and leading to a beneficial design in multi-pass solar air collectors for improving heat-transfer rate and increasing resident time under the same operation conditions. Theoretical predictions show a higher heat-transfer efficiency for the present recycling configurations up to a maximum 115% device enhancement in comparison to that of a single-pass device. Examination of implementing the absorber plate and insulation sheet on the heat-transfer efficiency enhancement as well as the hydraulic dissipated power increment were also delineated, and deliberated the suitable external-recycle configuration with respect to an economic consideration. The paper presents the notion of high dimensionality—in the results—that could change the exergy and energy characteristics of the two-pass solar collector. To examine the energetic aspect of the collector, two different types of absorber plate surfaces were chosen: one that is smooth and one with triangular fins. Both designs have two-pass and wooden baffles underneath their absorber plates. The induced air blower was used for the forced convection of air. To examine the attribute of the data, the least angle regression (LARS) algorithm was used to find a new exergy model without overfitting the data. The second law efficiency dropped by 18.92% for the given models of the solar collector when the air flow rate surged further from 10.10 g·s−1 to 12.10 g·s−1, whereas the energy efficiency showed contradictory behaviour for the given range of air flow rate. It increased by 3% in the first half of the rise in the air flow rate, and on the other hand, a jump of 8% was recorded in the energy efficiency with a rise in the air flow rate by 19.80%. The addition of wooden baffles in the second passage of the flat plate two-pass collector increased the entropy generation due to air friction by 200%, albeit it dropped by 50% at 12.10 g·s−1. Upon increasing the air stream rate from 8.10 g·s−1 to 12.10 g·s−1, the exergy destruction rate at the front finned surface of the two-pass solar air collector receded by 5.49–8.76%, and at the same time, it elevated for the rear passage provided with the wooden baffles. In this paper, a new R744 heat pump system is studied. The gas cooler, evaporator, indoor heat core, and indoor gas cooler are all micro-channel heat exchangers. The R744 high pressure system adopts a combination of an accumulator and internal heat exchanger (ACCU/IHX). In addition, an electronic reversible regulating valve is added before the outdoor gas cooler, making the outdoor heat exchanger able to be used as a gas cooler or evaporator. The water-cooled condenser can improve the performance in the cooling or heating mode. The research contents contain the performance and optimal pressure under extreme conditions as a result of the experiments. The results show that the cooling capacity can reach 8.2 kW with a COP of 1.87, under a 40 °C external circulation intake. The cooling capacity on the battery side can reach 11 kW under an ambient temperature of 40 °C, which can provide a sufficient cooling capacity. Under an ambient temperature of −20 °C, the maximum heating capacity can reach 6.86 kW with a COP of 1.67. Under an ambient temperature of −15 °C, the heating capacity reaches 5.07 kW with a COP of 1.78, when the indoor air volume flow rate is 200 m3/h. Obviously, R744 heat pumps show a huge advantage, compared with the traditional PTC heating or R134a heat pumps at extremely low temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to predict the airflow and heat transfer in half of a pallet layer of tomatoes. The numerical and experimental results were compared, and a good agreement was obtained between both results using the root-mean-square error (RMSE) and absolute relative deviation (ARD) values as criteria. The validated CFD model was then used to minimise the product temperature heterogeneity by optimising the airflow rate and the crate design. A downward flow of the air along the central parts of the crates and an upward flow close to the lateral walls of the crates were observed. Three different total ventilated areas (TVAs) were tested to study their influence on the product temperature uniformity and cooling rate. The MTD and ATD decreased from 6.8 to 3.5 °C and from 1.5 to 0.7 °C, respectively, when the TVA was increased from 11 to 15%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recovery of vegetal waste for energy purposes is one of the ways to increase the amount of energy obtained from renewable sources. The Top-Lit Updraft (TLUD) gasification and combustion process is recognized as the least polluting of all other combustion processes, resulting in a sterile charcoal called biochar, which can be used as an amendment in agricultural soils. The purpose of this research was to determine the influence of excess air in the combustion area compared to the (theoretical) calculated requirement for a TLUD energy module. Most scientific publications on this topic recommend primary/secondary air flow rate ratios of 1/3 or 1/4. In this study, the two recommended ratios were tested, and it was found that better energy results correspond to the ratio of 1/3. For this 1/3 ratio, the investigations continued in order to optimize the combustion process. The results achieved demonstrate that the excess combustion air flow of 30% improves the performance of the energy module due to the increase in oxygen supply and the increase in air speed in the combustion area of the syngas resulting from gasification. Increasing the excess combustion air flow rate by +50% had the effect of lowering the temperature in the flame due to the cooling of the combustion gases caused by a too high rate of excess cold air flow. The frequent appearance of sandy and dusty weather in Northwest China impacts the wind turbine. Meanwhile, the non-constant phenomena, dynamic stall speed during the wind turbine operation, will lead to large load fluctuations and unsafe operation. However, few studies have been conducted at home and abroad on the effect of particle parameters on the dynamic stall of airfoils. This paper investigates the impact of particle parameters on the airfoil dynamic stall through numerical simulation of the coupling between the continuous phase and discrete phase by using the SST k-ω turbulence model for a two-dimensional NACA 0012 airfoil. The effect of particle parameters on the airfoil dynamic stall aerodynamic performance, the impact of the flow field around the airfoil, and the particles motion were studied, respectively. The investigation shows a reduction in the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil, due to the addition of particles. The effect is more prominent under a large angle of attack and less under a small angle of attack. When the angle of attack increases, the loss rate of lift coefficient in the windy and sandy environment gradually decreases, while irregular fluctuations emerge when the angle of attack decreases, and the overall rate of change increases more significantly, compared to the stage of the increasing angle of attack. For the particle diameter under 50 μm, the larger the particle diameter, the more significant the change of lift coefficient becomes, as well as the larger the vortex volume near the airfoil's leading edge, and a large number of particles gather at the suction surface of the airfoil. For the particle diameter of 50 μm, the lift coefficient decreases at any angle of attack of the airfoil movement to the oscillation cycle, the vortex volume decreases, and a large number of particles gather at the pressure surface of the airfoil. However, for particle diameters above 50 μm, the lift coefficient gets reduced, followed by a decrease in the vortex volume near the airfoil leading edge with the increase of particle diameter, so that plenty of particles gather on the pressure surface of that airfoil. At the stage of increasing the airfoil angle of attack, with the increase of particle concentration, there is a gradual decrease of the peak lift coefficient and stall angle of attack of the airfoil, as well as a corresponding decrease of the drag coefficient divergence angle of attack and peak value. In contrast, when the airfoil angle of attack is decreased, the airflow reattachment process obviously lags behind that of the clean air. As the particle concentration increases, the airfoil separation point occurs earlier, and the higher the concentration, the earlier the separation point. This paper investigates a novel controlled-temperature double-skin façade (DSF) building element. A three-dimensional time-dependent numerical model was developed for six different geometries for the investigation of thermal performance under different orientations (azimuth 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°). The boundary conditions of the numerical model were determined with the PVGIS tool and adjusted with the sol-air temperature equation. The results of the numerical simulation were validated with the use of measurements from an experimental test cell. The numerical results indicated an improved thermal performance when temperature-controlled air and flow were supplied through the building envelope with annual total energy savings in kWh/m2 of 1.99, 1.38, 2.13 and 2.06 for azimuth 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°, respectively. In regard to the total energy savings in %, the maximum benefit was considered to be in the winter season, with values of 65, 29, 80 and 28 for azimuth 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°, respectively. The experimental measurements revealed the test cell's ability to maintain a relatively constant internal surface temperature and to not be significantly affected by the orientation and diverse ambient conditions. The paper deals with the self-ignition and combustion of hydrogen jets in a high-speed transverse flow of hot vitiated air in a duct. The Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES) approach based on the Shear Stress Transport (SST) model is used, which in this paper is applied to a turbulent reacting flow with finite rate chemical reactions. An original Adaptive Implicit Scheme for unsteady simulations of turbulent flows with combustion, which was successfully used in IDDES simulation, is described. The simulation results are compared with the experimental database obtained at the LAERTE experimental workbench of the ONERA—The French Aerospace Laboratory. Comparison of IDDES with experimental results shows a strong sensitivity of the simulation results to the surface roughness and temperature of the duct walls. The results of IDDES modeling are in good agreement with experimental pressure distributions along the wall and with the results of videoregistration of the excited radical chemiluminescence. Coughing and sneezing are the main ways of spreading coronavirus-2019 (SARS-CoV-2). People sometimes need to work together at close distances. This study presents the results of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the dispersion and transport of respiratory droplets emitted by an infected person who coughs in an indoor space with an air ventilation system. The resulting information is expected to help in risk assessment and development of mitigation measures to prevent the infection spread. The turbulent flow of air in the indoor space is simulated using the k-ε model. The particle equation of motion included the drag, the Saffman lift, the Brownian force and gravity/buoyancy forces. The innovation of this study includes A: Using the Eulerian–Lagrangian CFD model for the simulation of the cough droplet dispersion. B: Assessing the infection risk by the Wells–Riley equation. C: A safer design for the ventilation system (changing the ventilation supplies and exhausts in the indoor space and choosing the right location for air ventilation). The droplet distribution in the indoor space is strongly influenced by the air ventilation layout. The air-curtain flow pattern significantly reduces the dispersion and spreading of virus-infected cough droplets. When the ventilation air flow occurs along the room length, it takes about 115 s for the cough droplets to leave the space. However, when the ventilation air flow is across the width of the indoor space and there are air curtain-type air flow patterns in the room, it takes about 75 s for the cough droplets to leave the space. The performance of a hybrid solar desalination system is predicted in this work using an enhanced prediction method based on a supervised machine-learning algorithm. A humidification–dehumidification (HDH) unit and a single-stage flashing evaporation (SSF) unit make up the hybrid solar desalination system. The Al-Biruni Earth Radius (BER) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms serve as the foundation for the suggested algorithm. Using experimental data, the BER–PSO algorithm is trained and evaluated. The cold fluid and injected air volume flow rates were the algorithms' inputs, and their outputs were the hot and cold fluids' outlet temperatures as well as the pressure drop across the heat exchanger. Both the volume mass flow rate of hot fluid and the input temperatures of hot and cold fluids are regarded as constants. The results obtained show the great ability of the proposed BER–PSO method to identify the nonlinear link between operating circumstances and process responses. In addition, compared to the other analyzed models, it offers better statistical performance measures for the prediction of the outlet temperature of hot and cold fluids and pressure drop values. In practice, the outflow from a diffuser is highly non-uniform due to many reasons. However, the air outflow velocity from a diffuser is uniform in most current studies. Little research has been conducted to determine under what conditions uniform velocity can be used. Therefore, based on the non-uniformity of velocity, airflow characteristics of grille and ceiling diffusers were investigated experimentally and numerically. Two generic CFD cases (non-uniform and uniform velocity) are presented. The velocity field near the diffuser is investigated with measurements in order to determine velocity-inlet boundary conditions. The study shows that the uniform velocity-inlet boundary condition can be considered accurate only under certain conditions. For the grille diffuser, the aspect ratio affects the distribution of the outflow velocity. Using uniform velocity as the velocity-inlet boundary condition for the grille diffuser would result in at least a 14.2% error in the jet region, except when the outflow aspect ratio is 1 and the average velocity is greater than 1.83 m/s. However, when the average velocity of the ceiling diffuser is 3.64 m/s, the error of using uniform velocity as the velocity-inlet boundary condition reaches 58.3%.
