Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) could facilitate the green energy transition as they can produce high-temperature heat and electricity while emitting only water when supplied with hydrogen. Additionally, when operated with natural gas, these systems demonstrate higher thermoelectric efficiency compared to traditional microturbines or alternative engines. Within this context, although digitalisation has facilitated the acquisition of extensive data for precise modelling and optimal management of fuel cells, there remains a significant gap in developing digital twins that effectively achieve these objectives in real-world applications. Existing research predominantly focuses on the use of machine learning algorithms to predict the degradation of fuel cell components and to optimally design and theoretically operate these systems. In light of this, the presented study focuses on developing digital twin-oriented models that predict the efficiency of a commercial gas-fed solid oxide fuel cell under various operational conditions. This study uses data gathered from an experimental setup, which was employed to train various machine learning models, including artificial neural networks, random forests, and gradient boosting regressors. Preliminary findings demonstrate that the random forest model excels, achieving an R2 score exceeding 0.98 and a mean squared error of 0.14 in estimating electric efficiency. These outcomes could validate the potential of machine learning algorithms to support fuel cell integration into energy management systems capable of improving efficiency, pushing the transition towards sustainable energy solutions. Microgrids (MGs) are the new paradigm of decentralized networks of renewable energy sources, loads, and storage devices that can operate independently or in coordination with the primary grid, incorporating significant flexibility and supply reliability. To increase reliability, traditional individual MGs can be replaced by networked microgrids (NMGs), which are more dependable. However, when it comes to operation and control, they also pose challenges for cyber security and communication reliability. Denial of service (DoS) is a common danger to DC microgrids with advanced controllers that rely on active information exchanges and has been recorded as the most frequent cause of cyber incidents. It can disrupt data transmission, leading to ineffective control and system instability. This paper proposes digital twin (DT) technology as an integrated solution, with new, advanced analytics technology using machine learning and artificial intelligence to provide simulation capabilities to predict and estimate future states. By twinning the cyber-physical dynamics of NMGs using data-driven models, DoS attacks targeting cyber-layer agents will be detected and mitigated. Magnetic field is one of the basic data for constructing a transformer digital twin. The finite element transient simulation takes a long time and cannot meet the real-time requirements of a digital twin. According to the nonlinear characteristics of the core and the timing characteristics of the magnetic field, this paper proposes a fast calculation method of the spatial magnetic field of the transformer, considering the nonlinear characteristics of the core. Firstly, based on the geometric and electrical parameters of the single-phase double-winding test transformer, the corresponding finite element simulation model is built. Secondly, the key parameters of the finite element model are parametrically scanned to obtain the nonlinear working condition data set of the test transformer. Finally, a deep learning network integrating a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short-term memory network (LSTM) is built to train the mapping relationship between winding voltage, current, and the spatial magnetic field so as to realize the rapid calculation of the transformer magnetic field. The results show that the calculation time of the deep learning model is greatly shortened compared with the finite element model, and the model calculation results are consistent with the experimental measurement results. Implementing the IIoT concept in industry involves the development and implementation of online systems monitoring the technical state of electromechanical equipment. This is achieved through the use of digital twins and digital shadows (object state observers). The tasks of mastering new rolling profiles and optimizing plate mill rolling programs require improved methods for calculating equivalent motor currents and torques. Known methods are generally based on calculations using smoothed load diagrams, which are assumed to be identical for the upper and lower main drive (UMD and LMD) rolls. These methods do not consider the differences in actual loads (currents or torques) in steady rolling states. Experiments performed on the 5000 plate mill have shown that due to speed mismatches, the UMD and LMD torques differ three times or more. This causes overheating of the more heavily loaded motor, insulation life reduction, and premature failure. Therefore, the problem of developing and implementing techniques for monitoring the load and thermal regimes of motors using digital observers is relevant. The paper's contribution is the first justification of the concept of object-oriented digital shadows. They are developed for specific classes of industrial units using open-source software. This research justifies a methodology for assessing motor load and temperature by processing arrays of motor currents or torques generated during rolling. An equivalent load observer and a temperature observer were proposed and implemented using Matlab-Simulink resources. The algorithm was implemented on the mill 5000 and tuned using an earlier-developed virtual commissioning methodology with digital twins. Thermal regimes were studied, proving that torque alignment ensures equal motor temperatures. The proposed considerations contribute to the development of the theory and practice for creating digital systems to monitor the technical condition of electromechanical and mechatronic systems and implementing the Industry 4.0 concept at industrial enterprises. Colleges and universities are large consumers of energy, with a huge potential for building energy efficiency, and need to reduce energy consumption to build a low-carbon, energy-saving campus. Predicting the energy consumption of campus buildings can help to accurately manage the electricity consumption of buildings and reduce the energy consumption of buildings. However, the electricity consumption of a building's operation is affected by many factors, and it is difficult to establish a model for analysis and prediction. Therefore, in this study, the training building of the BIM education center on campus was selected as the research object, and a digital twin O&M platform was established by integrating IoT, digital twin technology (DDT), smart meter monitoring devices, and indoor environment monitoring devices. The O&M management platform can monitor real-time changes in indoor power consumption data and environmental parameters, and organize data on multiple influencing factors and power consumption. Following training, validation, and testing, the machine learning models (back propagation neural network, support vector model, and multiple linear regression model) were assessed and compared for accuracy. Following the multiple linear regression and support vector models, the backpropagation neural network model exhibited the highest accuracy. Consistent with the actual power consumption detection results in the BIM education center, the backpropagation neural network model produced results. Consequently, the BP model created in this study demonstrated its dependability and ability to forecast campus building power usage, assisting the university in organizing its energy supply and creating a campus that prioritizes conservation. The pre-cooling of a large LNG storage tank involves complex phenomena such as heat transfer, low-temperature flow, gas displacement, and vaporization. The whole pre-cooling process could take up to 50 h. For large-scale, full-capacity storage tanks, it is particularly important to accurately control the pre-cooling temperature. Digital twin technology can characterize and predict the full life cycle parameters from the beginning of pre-cooling development to the end and even the appearance of damage in real time. The construction of a digital twin platform requires a large number of data samples in order to predict the operating state of the device. Therefore, a simulation method with high computational efficiency for the pre-cooling process of LNG tanks is of great importance. In this paper, the mixture model and discrete phase model (DPM) are applied to simulate the pre-cooling process of a large LNG full-capacity tank. Following Euler–Lagrange, the DPM greatly simplifies the solution process. Compared with the experimental results, the maximum error of the DPM simulation results is less than 11%. Such a highly efficient simulation method for the large LNG full-capacity storage tank can make it possible to build the digital twin platform that needs hundreds of data model samples. Energy performance-based contracts (EPCs) offer a promising solution for enhancing the energy performance of buildings, which is an overarching step towards achieving Net Zero Carbon Buildings, addressing climate change and improving occupants' comfort. Despite their potential, their execution is constrained by difficulties that hinder their diffusion in the architecture, engineering, construction, and operation industry. Notably, the Measurement and Verification process is considered a significant impediment due to data sharing, storage, and security challenges. Nevertheless, there have been minimal efforts to analyze research conducted in this field systematically. A systematic analysis of 113 identified journal articles was conducted to fill this gap. A paucity of research tackling the utilization of digital technologies to enhance the implementation of EPCs was found. Consequently, this article proposes a framework integrating Digital Twin and Blockchain technologies to provide an enhanced EPC execution environment. Digital Twin technology leverages the system by monitoring and evaluating energy performance in real-time, predicting future performance, and facilitating informed decisions. Blockchain technology ensures the integrity, transparency, and accountability of information. Nuclear power plants (NPPs) require continuous monitoring of various systems, structures, and components to ensure safe and efficient operations. The critical safety testing of new fuel compositions and the analysis of the effects of power transients on core temperatures can be achieved through modeling and simulations. They capture the dynamics of the physical phenomenon associated with failure modes and facilitate the creation of digital twins (DTs). Accurate reconstruction of fields of interest (e.g., temperature, pressure, velocity) from sensor measurements is crucial to establish a two-way communication between physical experiments and models. Sensor placement is highly constrained in most nuclear subsystems due to challenging operating conditions and inherent spatial limitations. This study develops optimized data-driven sensor placements for full-field reconstruction within reactor and steam generator subsystems of NPPs. Optimized constrained sensors reconstruct field of interest within a tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) fuel irradiation experiment, a lumped parameter model of a nuclear fuel test rod and a steam generator. The optimization procedure leverages reduced-order models of flow physics to provide a highly accurate full-field reconstruction of responses of interest, noise-induced uncertainty quantification and physically feasible sensor locations. As the adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs) grows, the future of electricity distribution systems is confronted with significant challenges. These challenges arise from the transformation of consumers into prosumers and the resulting increased system complexity, leading to more pressure on the distribution grids. To address this complexity, a Digital Twin framework is designed to simulate DERs within distribution grids effectively. This framework is structured around four key modules: DERs, the electricity distribution grid, the energy management system, and the consumers. It incorporates a communication interface to facilitate interactions among these modules and includes considerations for grid topologies and demand-side configurations. The framework allows for the exploration of various DER adoption rates and capacities. The validation of this framework involves case studies on two Danish distribution grids with scenarios incorporating rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems, batteries, and electric vehicles, considering different combinations of these technologies. The findings demonstrate the framework's ability to depict the states of the grid, PV systems, electric vehicles, and battery systems with a 10 min resolution over periods ranging from a day to over a decade. As the demand for sustainable energy solutions grows, there is a critical requirement for continuous innovation to optimize the performance and safety of renewable energy systems (RESs). Closed-loop digital twins (CLDTs)—synchronized virtual replicas embedded with real-time data and control loops to mirror the behavior of physical systems—have emerged as a promising tool for achieving this goal. This paper presents a systematic literature review on the application of digital twin (DT) technology in the context of RESs with an emphasis on the impact of DTs on the efficiency, performance, and safety assurance of RESs. It explores the concept of CLDTs, highlighting their key functionalities and potential benefits for various renewable energy technologies. However, their effective implementation requires a structured approach to integrate observation, orientation, decision, and action (OODA) processes. This study presents a novel OODA framework specifically designed for CLDTs to systematically identify and manage their key components. These components include real-time monitoring, decision-making, and actuation. The comparison is carried out against the capabilities of DT utilizing the OODA framework. Analysing the existing scholarly literature, the review encompasses insights into the historical reliability landscape, DT deployment methodologies, and their influence on FOWT structures. Findings underscore the pivotal role of DT technology in enhancing FOWT reliability through real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance strategies, resulting in improved operational efficiency and reduced downtime. Highlighting the significance of DT technology as a potent mechanism for fortifying FOWT reliability, the review emphasises its potential to foster a robust operational framework while acknowledging the necessity for continued research to address technical intricacies and regulatory considerations in its integration within offshore wind energy systems. The development of monitoring and diagnostic methods for electrical machines requires the use of transient models capable of operating in real time and producing signal signatures with high precision. In this context, coupled-circuit models offer numerous advantages due to their speed of execution and accuracy. They have been successfully employed to create real-time digital twins of electrical machines. The main challenge of this modeling method lies in the preparation of the model, which involves numerous preliminary calculations and takes time to identify all its parameters. This is particularly due to the variation in inductances based on the rotor position. To determine these inductance values with great precision, the classical approach involves using finite-element field calculation software. However, the computation time quickly becomes an issue due to the large number of values to calculate and simulations to perform. This article introduces an innovative experimental approach to identify a coupled-circuit model and develop a digital twin of a wound-rotor induction machine. This method relies solely on simple electrical measurements and tests conducted at extremely low rotation speeds (1 rpm) to obtain inductance variations as a function of the rotor position. By employing this technique, the need for analytical models or finite-element field calculation simulations, which typically require precise knowledge of the machine's geometry and materials, is circumvented. The measurement processing employs optimization methods to extract the inductances as a function of the rotor position, which are then used as input data for the coupled-circuit model. The final parameters are specific to each machine and replicate all its manufacturing imperfections such as eccentricity and geometric or winding defects. This experimental identification method significantly enhances the model's accuracy and reduces the usually required preliminary calculation time in a finite-element-based identification process. Despite the pressure of carbon emissions and clean energy, coal remains the economic backbone of many developing countries due to its abundant resources and widespread distribution. The stable supply of coal is also vital for the global economy and remains irreplaceable in the future global energy structure. China has been a major contributor to annual coal output, accounting for nearly 50% worldwide since 2014. However, despite implementing intelligent coal mining technology, China's coal mining industry still employs over 1.5 million underground miners, posing significant safety risks associated with underground mining operations. Therefore, the introduction of coal mining robots in underground mines is an urgently needed scientific and technological solution for upgrading China's and even the world's coal energy industry. The working face needs a shearer, hydraulic support, a scraper conveyor, and other equipment for coordination. The deep integration of intelligent technology with factors such as "humans, machines, the environment, and management" in the workplace is the core content of intelligent coal mines. This paper puts forward an advanced framework for robot technology systems in coal mining, including single robots, robotized equipment, robot crowds, and unmanned systems. The framework clarifies the common key technologies of coal mining robot research and development and the cross-integration with new technologies such as 5G, the industrial internet, big data, artificial intelligence, and digital twins to improve the autonomous and intelligent application of coal mining robots. By establishing a scientific and complete standard system for coal mining robots, we aim to achieve the customized research and development and standardized production of various types of robot. A specific analysis is conducted on the research progress of common key technologies such as the explosion-proof design, mechanical system innovation, power drive, intelligent sensing, positioning and navigation, and underground communication of coal mining robots. The current research and application status of various types of coal mining robots in China are summarized. A new direction for future coal mining robot research and development is proposed. Robotic mining systems should be promoted to enhance the overall intelligence level and efficiency of mining equipment. To develop human–machine environment-integrated robots to improve the autonomy and collaboration level of coal mining robots, the digital twinning of the entire mine robot system should be accelerated; the normalized operation level of coal mine robots should be improved; research on coal mining robots, shield support robots, and transportation robots should be performed; intelligence should be achieved in fully mechanized mining faces; and equipment shield support for fully mechanized mining faces should be provided. The practical process of implementing coal mining robotization is summarized in this paper, and the technical and engineering feasibility of the coal mining machine population is verified. This article introduces a new approach for validating directional overcurrent protection schemes in ring-topology electrical distribution systems with distributed energy resources (DERs). The proposed protection scheme incorporates overcurrent and directional functions and addresses DER-induced challenges such as variable short circuit levels. This study employs real-time and offline simulations to evaluate the performance of the protection coordination scheme using a digital twin under DER-supplied loads. The utilization of digital twins offers the possibility to simulate different scenarios, providing real-time responses to dynamic changes and allowing for informed decision-making in response to disturbances or faults. This study aims to present a new approach to validate the performance of the proposed protection scheme when the load is entirely supplied by DERs, highlighting issues such as false trips and protection system blindness resulting from changes in short circuit currents. The results show a breakdown in the coordination of the protection scheme during the fault conditions, demonstrating the effectiveness of digital twins in validating the protection scheme's performance. A digital twin is recognized as a pivotal technology in a new type of power system monitoring as it provides an effective method for monitoring the vibration caused by ice shedding in overhead transmission lines. The digital twin model differs from traditional models in that it has the characteristics of precise mapping and real-time simulation. These emerging characteristics lead to urgent updating of the existing modeling approaches. Therefore, the current study proposes a dynamic digital twin modeling method for transmission line ice-shedding systems. In this approach, an analytical solution for conductor deicing oscillation is proposed to describe the span and tension unchanged in any time period and then segmented and iteratively corrected with measured time-varying parameters to implement real-time simulation functionality. A dynamic geometric model for transmission lines is proposed based on the Unity3D platform. In addition, a human-computer interaction visualization platform is proposed to display twin data, with the objective of realizing precise mapping of real transmission lines. This article reviews the Digital Twin (DT) concept and the interest of its application in photovoltaic installations. It compares how other authors use the DT approach in photovoltaic installations to improve the efficiency of the renewable energy generated and consumed, energy prediction and the reduction of the operation and maintenance costs of the photovoltaic installation. It reviews how, by providing real-time data and analysis, DTs enable more informed decision-making in the solar energy sector. This study is a numerical study to predict the temperature of the heat exchange tubes inside the pulverized coal-fired boiler through the conjugate heat transfer analysis. Due to the aspect ratio and number of tubes inside the pulverized coal-fired boiler, actual tube modeling analysis has rarely been conducted. Most of the research has been conducted through the porous media method, resulting in limited information on the temperature distribution of each tube. However, for the development of a digital twin model for improving the performance of the boiler and reducing maintenance costs, information on the local temperature of the tubes is required. In this study, all the tubes inside the boiler were modeled, and conjugate heat transfer analysis was performed to confirm the local temperature distribution. For this purpose, the analysis was conducted using Fluent 2020 r2, and the analysis model was constructed using more than 300 million structured grids. The calculation was performed considering conjugate heat transfer in the pulverized coal-fired boiler, heat exchange by steam inside the tubes, and conductive heat transfer of the tubes. As a result, it was confirmed that there is a significant deviation in the local temperature for each tube position. Furthermore, the maximum temperature of the PrSH tube ranges widely, between 492 and 532 degrees, depending on the tube's position. It was observed that the point of the highest temperature inside the tubes also varies for each tube due to the flow of external combustion gas. Based on these results, it is expected that strategic approaches to boiler design and maintenance can be achieved. Furthermore, it is anticipated to contribute to the high efficiency of power facilities by being utilized as basic data for the development of a digital twin model for the boiler. Hydrogen is a promising energy carrier in all fields of transportation, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and manned vehicles for urban air mobility (UAM). In these applications, one of the biggest challenges is to overcome the limitations of lithium battery technologies, while keeping the advantage of clean energy, at least in terms of direct emissions. For these reasons, there is an ever-increasing interest in the development, simulation, and testing of propulsion systems adopting air-cooled proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Fuel cells for aerospace must be designed for power-to-weight maximization. For this reason, auxiliary systems are simplified, and the adoption of air-cooling and passive cooling techniques is favored. However, the performance and dynamic behavior of PEMFCs are affected by the operating conditions, which, in applications like UAVs and UAM, are continuously changing due to the variation of speed and altitude during the flight. This investigation analyzes semi-empirical and control-oriented models of fuel cell systems proposed in the scientific literature. Technological improvements are crucial for achieving decarbonisation targets and addressing the impacts of climate change in the built environment via mitigation and adaptation measures. Data-driven methods for building performance prediction are particularly important in this regard. Nevertheless, the deployment of these technologies faces challenges, particularly in the domains of artificial intelligence (AI) ethics, interpretability and explainability of machine learning (ML) algorithms. The challenges encountered in applications for the built environment are amplified, particularly when data-driven solutions need to be applied throughout all the stages of the building life cycle and to address problems from a socio-technical perspective, where human behaviour needs to be considered. This requires a consistent use of analytics to assess the performance of a building, ideally by employing a digital twin (DT) approach, which involves the creation of a digital counterpart of the building for continuous analysis and improvement. This paper presents an in-depth review of the critical connections between data-driven methods, AI ethics, interpretability and their implementation in the built environment, acknowledging the complex and interconnected nature of these topics. The review is organised into three distinct analytical levels: The first level explores key issues of the current research on the interpretability of machine learning methods. The second level considers the adoption of interpretable data-driven methods for building energy modelling and the problem of establishing a link with the third level, which examines physics-driven grey-box modelling techniques, in order to provide integrated modelling solutions. The review's findings highlight how the interpretability concept is relevant in multiple contexts pertaining to energy and the built environment and how some of the current knowledge gaps can be addressed by further research in the broad area of data-driven methods. Cloud infrastructures operate in highly dynamic environments, and today, energy-focused optimization become crucial. Moreover, the concept of extended cloud infrastructure, which, among others, uses green energy, started to gain traction. This introduces a new level of dynamicity to the ecosystem, as "processing components" may "disappear" and "come back", specifically in scenarios where the lack/return of green energy leads to shutting down/booting back servers at a given location. Considered use cases may involve introducing new types of resources (e.g., adding containers with server racks with "next-generation processors"). All such situations require the dynamic adaptation of "system knowledge", i.e., runtime system adaptation. In this context, an agent-based digital twin of the extended green cloud infrastructure is proposed. Here, knowledge management is facilitated with an explainable Rule-Based Expert System, combined with Expression Languages. The tests were run using Extended Green Cloud Simulator, which allows the modelling of cloud infrastructures powered (partially) by renewable energy sources. Specifically, the work describes scenarios in which: (1) a new hardware resource is introduced in the system; (2) the system component changes its resource; and (3) system user changes energy-related preferences. The emergence of Digital Twin (DT) technology presents unique opportunities for society by facilitating real-time data transfer from the physical environment to its digital counterpart. Although progress has been made in various industry sectors such as aerospace, the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operation (AECO) sector still requires further advancements, like the adoption of these technologies over traditional approaches. The use of these technologies should become standard practice rather than an advanced operation. The framework is designed to provide best practices for the AECO sector. Moreover, it aims to underscores the potential of DT for optimization through overseeing and digital management of the built environment across the entire life cycle of facilities, encompassing design, construction, operation, and maintenance. It is based on an extensive literature review and presents a holistic approach to outlining the roles of Building Information Modelling (BIM), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Internet of Things (IoT), and other key enablers within the DT environment. The use of renewable energy sources is becoming increasingly widespread around the world due to various factors, the most relevant of which is the high environmental friendliness of these types of energy resources. However, the large-scale involvement of green energy leads to the creation of distributed energy networks that combine several different generation methods, each of which has its own specific features, and as a result, the data collection and processing necessary to optimize the operation of such energy systems become more relevant. Development of new technologies for the more optimal use of RES is one of the main tasks of modern research in the field of energy, where an important place is assigned to the use of technologies based on artificial intelligence, allowing researchers to significantly increase the efficiency of the use of all types of RES within energy systems. This paper proposes to consider the methodology of application of modern approaches to the assessment of the amount of energy obtained from renewable energy sources based on artificial intelligence technologies, approaches used for data processing and for optimization of the control processes for operating energy systems with the integration of renewable energy sources. The relevance of the work lies in the formation of a general approach applied to the evaluation of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy based on the use of artificial intelligence technologies. As a verification of the approach considered by the authors, a number of models for predicting the amount of solar power generation using photovoltaic panels have been implemented, for which modern machine-learning methods have been used. As a result of testing for quality and accuracy, the best results were obtained using a hybrid forecasting model, which combines the joint use of a random forest model applied at the stage of the normalization of the input data, exponential smoothing model, and LSTM model. This review paper provides a summary of methods in which artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been applied in the management of variable renewable energy (VRE) systems, and an outlook to future directions of research in the field. The VRE types included are namely solar, wind and marine varieties. AI techniques, and particularly machine learning (ML), have gained traction as a result of data explosion, and offer a method for integration of multimodal data for more accurate forecasting in energy applications. The VRE management aspects in which AI techniques have been applied include optimized power generation forecasting and integration of VRE into power grids, including the aspects of demand forecasting, energy storage, system optimization, performance monitoring, and cost management. Modern solutions for precise fault localisation in Low Voltage (LV) Distribution Networks (DNs) often rely on costly tools such as the micro-Phasor Measurement Unit (μ PMU), which is potentially impractical for the large number of nodes in LVDNs. This paper introduces a novel fault detection technique using a distribution network digital twin without the use of μ PMUs. The Digital Twin (DT) integrates data from Smart Meters (SMs) and network topology to create an accurate replica. In using SM voltage-magnitude readings, the pre-built twin compiles a database of fault scenarios and matches them with their unique voltage fingerprints. However, this SM-based voltage-only approach shows only a 70.7% accuracy in classifying fault type and location. Therefore, this research suggests using the cables' Currents Symmetrical Component (CSC). Since SMs do not provide direct current data, a Machine Learning (ML)-based regression method is proposed to estimate the cables' currents in the DT. Validation is performed on a 41-node LV distribution feeder in the Scottish network provided by the industry partner Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN). The results show that the current estimation regressor significantly improves fault localisation and identification accuracy to 95.77%. This validates the crucial role of a DT in distribution networks, thus enabling highly accurate fault detection when using SM voltage-only data, with further refinements being conducted through estimations of CSC. The proposed DT offers automated fault detection, thus enhancing customer connectivity and maintenance team dispatch efficiency without the need for additional expensive μ PMU on a densely-noded distribution network. Smart grids play an important role for energy management by directly supporting the socio-ecological transition of neighbourhoods. This research provides the design of a coordination model to enable the management and exchange of electrical energy between producers and consumers at a micro-grid level. This model, which derives from the SAPERE coordination model, allows the intelligent digital twins to interact and generate services on the fly to meet different needs in real time. We have designed producer and consumer digital twins, which autonomously generate supply contracts in the form of a transaction, and supervisor digital twins, which regulate energy at the node level, managing threshold violations and proactively avoiding future threshold violations by using predictions. This coordination model allows energy exchanges in a single node and in a micro-grid structure that contains several neighbouring nodes. We have implemented and tested the platform with realistic data, based on the consumption statistics of a real household, and with real data, collected in the living-lab of "Les Vergers" located near Geneva. The results show that the combination of a coordination model and intelligent digital twins actually supports self-adaptive energy management in a smart grid. Digital twins have provided valuable information for making effective decisions to ensure high efficiency in the manufacturing process using virtual models. Consequently, AC electric motors play a pivotal role in this framework, commonly employed as the primary electric actuators within Industry 4.0. In addition, classification systems could be implemented to identify normal and abnormal operating conditions in electric machines. Moreover, the execution of such classification systems in low-cost digital embedded systems is crucial, enabling continuous monitoring of AC electric machines. Self-Organized Maps (SOMs) offer a promising solution for implementing classification systems in low-cost embedded systems due to their ability to reduce system dimensionality and visually represent the model's features, so local digital systems can be used as classification systems. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the utilization of SOMs for classifying operating conditions in AC electric machines. Furthermore, when integrated into an embedded system, SOMs detect abnormal conditions in AC electric machines. A trained SOM is deployed on a C2000 microcontroller to exemplify the proposed approach. Confronted with the climate crisis, the world is making tremendous efforts in energy transition, such as expanding renewable energy that does not emit carbon. The importance of virtual power plant (VPP) operation technology has emerged to secure grid flexibility in response to the expanding renewable energy implemented due to these efforts. Accordingly, VPPs, which include photovoltaics, wind turbines, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), load, and EV, have been constructed. HVAC, one of the component resources, is a system that controls and regulates temperature, humidity, and airflow. Since it responds sensitively to the building's heat capacity and changes in the external environment, it requires continuous and stable control. In this paper, we used data-based modeling to implement the HVAC required for the optimal operation of VPP. Since accurately creating an equation-based HVAC model was difficult considering building information modeling and external environment variables, we used historical HVAC operation data to perform data-based modeling. The model was implemented using nonlinear regression and machine learning, such as a support vector machine and artificial neural network. Then, the data-based HVAC and the actual HVAC operation results were comparatively analyzed based on a case study, and the model's goodness-of-fit was evaluated based on performance metrics. The automotive production sector plays a significant role in the energy consumption of all the industrial sphere, which currently represents approximately 38% of the total global energy use. Especially in production sites with several manufacturing lines working in parallel, the occurrence of failures and anomalies or sudden changes in the production volume may require a re-scheduling of the entire production process. In this regard, a digital twin of each phase of the process would give several indications about the new re-scheduled manufacture in terms of energy consumption and the control strategy to adopt. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to propose different modeling approaches to a degreasing tank process, which is a preliminary phase at automotive production sites before the application of paint to car bodies. In detail, two different approaches have been developed: the first is a physics-based thermodynamic approach, which relies on the mass and energy balances of the system analyzed, and the second is machine learning-based, with the calibration of several artificial neural networks (ANNs). All the investigated approaches were assessed and compared, and it was determined that, for this application and with the data at our disposal, the thermodynamic approach has better prediction accuracy, with an overall mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.30 °C. Moreover, the model can be used to optimize the heat source policy of the tank, for which it has demonstrated, with historical data, an energy saving potentiality of up to 30%, and to simulate future scenarios in which, due to company constraints, a re-scheduling of the production of more work shifts is required. With the development and popularization of the Internet of Things, big data, cloud computing, and other technologies, Digital twin technology (DTT) is increasingly applied to building operation and maintenance (O&M). However, most of the research focuses on building energy consumption, safety, and other management, and relatively little research on the monitoring of building terminal energy using information. The information is closely related to occupants' behavior, such as air conditioning, lighting, shading, window status information, as well as personnel number and location, and it has a great impact on building energy consumption. Due to different occupants' behaviors, the level of building energy consumption varies several times or even more. Take an office building as an example. Based on digital twin technology, the framework of building energy using intelligent monitoring is constructed. It mainly includes four parts, namely building physical space, virtual twin space, predictive control simulation engine, and twin big data. For each part, functions are realized through building Information Modelling (BIM), smart sensors, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. Based on the standard framework and every function realization method, the DTT can used for building O&M effectually. The application of building an intelligent control system based on the occupants' characteristics is simulated and analyzed in Designbuilder software 6.1.2. In stationary power generation units such as distributed remote site power systems and ship power systems, diesel engine generator systems are essential for supplying electricity. This paper proposes a digital twin diesel generator system for teaching and research purposes. A five-layer resilient architecture, including a web interface layer, server cluster layer, real-time data layer, controller layer, and equipment layer, is proposed in this paper. Based on the resilient architecture, users are able to build, implement and monitor the digital twin through web interfaces. Apart from MATLAB/Simulink, a modeling tool called M2PLink is developed to allow users to create mathematical models using a block diagram editor similar to Simulink. Various basic blocks for control systems are provided for users to form sophisticated models. These models are converted into executable codes which are downloaded to the simulator in the controller layer, where the real-time simulations are implemented. A web-based real-time monitoring interface with many widgets such as charts, oscilloscopes, and three-dimensional (3D) animation is also provided for users to customize their monitoring interface. All the signals can be traced and all the parameters can be tuned in the monitoring interface. The users are able to interact with the digital twin just like they do with the real system. Digital twins (DTs) have been implemented in various applications, including wind turbine generators (WTGs). They are used to create virtual replicas of physical turbines, which can be used to monitor and optimize their performance. By simulating the behavior of physical turbines in real time, DTs enable operators to predict potential failures and optimize maintenance schedules, resulting in increased reliability, safety, and efficiency. WTGs rely on accurate wind speed measurements for safe and efficient operation. However, physical wind speed sensors are prone to inaccuracies and failures due to environmental factors or inherent issues, resulting in partial or missing measurements that can affect the turbine's performance. This paper proposes a DT-based sensing methodology to overcome these limitations by augmenting the physical sensor platform with virtual sensor arrays. A test bench of a direct drive WTG based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) was prepared, and its mathematical model was derived. MATLAB/Simulink was used to develop the WTG virtual model based on its mathematical model. A data acquisition system (DAS) equipped with an ActiveX server was used to facilitate real-time data exchange between the virtual and physical models. The virtual sensor was then validated and tuned using real sensory data from the physical turbine model. Fouling in heat exchanger tubes is a common problem in the operation of condensers. The deposition of fouling can affect the thermal efficiency and safety of the condenser. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the impact of fouling on time and carry out scientific treatment. Firstly, fault prognosis methods require a significant amount of historical fault data, which is often lacking in practical applications. This paper proposes a method based on dynamically adjusting parameters of the fouling thermal resistance empirical equation to establish a fouling thermal resistance digital twin model. It is combined with simulation tools to rapidly generate a large amount of fault data for the research of prognosis methods. Secondly, in the research of fault prognosis methods, prognosis accuracy relies on establishing a reliable and accurate model that describes the behavior of faults. The uncertainty in the modeling process significantly affects the results. Classic modeling methods do not effectively quantify uncertainty. Therefore, this paper proposes a method that applies differential modeling to predict fouling faults in condensers, automatically obtaining uncertain parameters while establishing a reliable model. By calculating the performance evaluation indicator, the accuracy error indicator of the differential modeling-based prognosis method is further reduced to 0.35. Obtaining wind energy for the production of electric energy plays a key role in overcoming the problems associated with climate change and the dwindling reserves of traditional types of energy resources. The purpose of this work is to analyze current methods of energy estimation and forecasting, to consider the main classifications of forecasts and methods used in their construction and to review the main types of mathematical distributions used to calculate the speed and power of wind flow, depending on specific geographical conditions. In recent years, there has been an increase in the capacity of modern wind generators, which has significantly improved the efficiency of wind energy parks. The initial stage in determining the feasibility of involving a particular energy source in the overall energy system of the region is a preliminary assessment of the energy potential, allowing one to determine the possible percentage of substitution of traditional energy. To solve such a problem, it is necessary to use models of energy supply. Evaluation of wind as a resource creates certain difficulties in modeling because this resource is stochastic and variable. In this regard, this paper proposes to consider various models for estimating wind energy potential, which can be classified into empirical models and models based on the application of modern intelligent data analysis technologies. The paper presents an analysis of the existing models for estimating the amount of energy, which can be used in a system designed to determine the most optimal configuration of the energy system based on the use of different conversion technologies most relevant to the case under study, and it also serves as the basis for creating digital twins designed to model and optimize the operation of the projected energy complex. Due to their significant performance, Phase-Shifted Full-Bridge Converters (PSFBCs) have gained widespread adoption in medium- and high-power applications. The performance of a PSFBC is greatly influenced by its magnetic components, namely the transformer and resonance inductor. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a parameter optimization of magnetic components for PSFBCs, specifically the transformer turns ratio and resonance inductor value, to enhance conversion efficiency and minimize operational loss. A digital twin of PSFBCs enabling a more accurate loss estimation is proposed to achieve this objective. The proposed loss estimation method precisely calculates the effective and circulation intervals and the corresponding current points of the primary-side transformer current, resulting in improved accuracy. By leveraging the digital twin, the effects of transformer turns ratio and resonant inductor value on the conversion efficiency of a PSFBC can be efficiently simulated. This facilitates the parameter optimization of magnetic components, thereby minimizing operational losses across different application scenarios. This paper also designs and implements a PSFBC prototype with a rated input voltage of 380 V, output voltage of 24 V, and output current of 20 A. The experimental results show the influences of transformer turns ratio and resonant inductor value on the PSFBC and validate the proposed digital twin. The proposed parameter optimization of magnetic components is further evaluated across two application scenarios with varying utilization rates. The simulation results indicate a reduction of approximately 14% in operational loss per hour after applying the parameter optimization of magnetic components for the PSFBC used as a battery charger. Offshore Wind Power Systems (OWPS) offer great energy and environmental advantages, but also pose significant Operation and Maintenance (O&M) challenges. In this survey, we analyze these challenges and propose some optimization strategies and technologies for OWPS comprehensively. The existing literature review mainly focuses on a certain field of offshore wind power O&M, but lacks a comprehensive introduction to offshore wind power. We consider the energy efficiency, reliability, safety, and economy of OWPS from various aspects, such as offshore wind and wave energy utilization, offshore wind turbine components, and wind power operation parameters, and compare them with onshore wind power systems. We suggest that OWPS can benefit from advanced design optimization, digital twin, monitoring and forecasting, fault diagnosis, and other technologies to enhance their O&M performance. This paper presents a novel overcurrent protection scheme based on digital twins for a distribution network with distributed energy resources. A coordination protection standard is employed to perform settings and coordinate intelligent electronic devices, evaluating the effects of distributed energy resources. In addition, some integration criteria for distributed energy resources are proposed to identify the impact on overcurrent protections. The power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) scheme is designed to develop digital twins (DT) that connect the real relays to the simulated network. Moreover, a standard for substation automation is employed to define the communication protocol for reading Generic Object-Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE) messages. Furthermore, the IEEE 13-node test feeder is employed to validate the method and model in the real-time simulation software. The concept of the digital twin has been adopted as an important aspect in digital transformation of power systems. Although the notion of the digital twin is not new, its adoption into the energy sector has been recent and has targeted increased operational efficiency. This paper is focused on addressing an important gap in the research literature reviewing the state of the art in utilization of digital twin technology in microgrids, an important component of power systems. A microgrid is a local power network that acts as a dependable island within bigger regional and national electricity networks, providing power without interruption even when the main grid is down. Microgrids are essential components of smart cities that are both resilient and sustainable, providing smart cities the opportunity to develop sustainable energy delivery systems. Due to the complexity of design, development and maintenance of a microgrid, an efficient simulation model with ability to handle the complexity and spatio-temporal nature is important. The digital twin technologies have the potential to address the above-mentioned requirements, providing an exact virtual model of the physical entity of the power system. The parameter identification of a PEMFC is the process of using optimization algorithms to determine the ideal unknown variables suitable for the development of an accurate fuel-cell-performance prediction model. These parameters are not always available from the manufacturer's datasheet, so they need to be determined to accurately model and predict the fuel cell's performance. Five optimization methods—bald eagle search (BES) algorithm, equilibrium optimizer (EO), coot (COOT) algorithm, antlion optimizer (ALO), and heap-based optimizer (HBO)—are used to compute seven unknown parameters of a PEMFC. During optimization, these seven parameters are used as decision variables, and the fitness function to be minimized is the sum square error (SSE) between the estimated cell voltage and the actual measured cell voltage. The SSE obtained for the BES algorithm was noted to be 0.035102. The COOT algorithm recorded an SSE of 0.04155, followed by ALO with an SSE of 0.04022 and HBO with an SSE of 0.056021. BES predicted the performance of the fuel cell accurately; hence, it is suitable for the development of a digital twin for fuel-cell applications and control systems for the automotive industry. Furthermore, it was deduced that the convergence speed for BES was faster compared to the other algorithms investigated. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is a cutting-edge project that aims to develop a sustainable energy source by harnessing the power of nuclear fusion. One of the key challenges in the development of the ITER is the complex electrical grid that is required to support its operations. To address this challenge, a digital twin (DT) of the Central Solenoid (CS) Converter Power Supply grid has to be developed, and real-time simulation strategies have been proposed to monitor and study the performance of the ITER grid. Real-time simulation strategies allow for continuous feedback on the performance of the grid, enabling the quick identification and resolution of issues. However, it is not always possible to perform real-time simulation easily in a real-time simulator; therefore, specific strategies have to be implemented in the DT. This paper focuses on decoupling lines and explicit partitioning as solutions to allow the real-time simulation of the CS Converter Power Supply grid with two converter units (CUs), as required by the ITER Organization (IO). As will be shown later in this article, the proposed approach is progressive and applicable to a more complex grid with multiple CUs. The rapid development of digital technologies and solutions is disrupting the energy sector. In this regard, digitalization is a facilitator and enabler for integrating renewable energies, management and operation. This paper proposes a Digital Twin DT concept, mainly focused on O&M, to obtain more information about the system by using several artificial intelligence boxes. Digital twin is often viewed as a technology that can assist engineers and researchers make data-driven system and network-level decisions. Across the scientific literature, digital twins have been consistently theorized as a strong solution to facilitate proactive discovery of system failures, system and network efficiency improvement, system and network operation optimization, among others. With their strong affinity to the industrial metaverse concept, digital twins have the potential to offer high-value propositions that are unique to the energy sector stakeholders to realize the true potential of physical and digital convergence and pertinent sustainability goals. Although the technology has been known for a long time in theory, its practical real-world applications have been so far limited, nevertheless with tremendous growth projections. In the energy sector, there have been theoretical and lab-level experimental analysis of digital twins but few of those experiments resulted in real-world deployments. There may be many contributing factors to any friction associated with real-world scalable deployment in the energy sector such as cost, regulatory, and compliance requirements, and measurable and comparable methods to evaluate performance and return on investment. Those factors can be potentially addressed if the digital twin applications are built on the foundations of a scalable and interoperable framework that can drive a digital twin application across the project lifecycle: from ideation to theoretical deep dive to proof of concept to large-scale experiment to real-world deployment at scale. This paper is an attempt to define a digital twin open architecture framework that comprises a digital twin technology stack (D-Arc) coupled with information flow, sequence, and object diagrams. This paper presents an analysis of the instability of the electricity generation of renewable energy sources (RESs), specifically Digital Twins of RESs. The first part deals with the analysis of RES electricity generation around the world and Ukraine. The following chapter describes features of functioning power grids in modern conditions in Ukraine and ways to ensure the balance reliability in the power system for conditions of high-grade RES integration. The rapid increase in electricity generation RESs causes control problems of distributed power supply in the power grid. A mathematical model of the parameter controls in normal mode electric power systems for conditions with high integration of RESs is proposed in the second part. The study investigates components of the optimality criterion at the control of normal mode parameters of the electric power system with RESs. In general, digital transformation helps decarbonize the energy supply, decrease dependency on fossil fuels, and integrate renewables into power systems. A model Digital Twin (DT) of a photovoltaic system, or an exact 3D visualization, analyzing the accumulator system depending on load and generation, are presented. The problems of Digital Twin are very widely discussed, but many papers and studies are general without any practical implementations. The main part of this paper focuses on research and deals with daily electricity generation from different kinds of RESs, namely mini-hydropower stations, photovoltaic power stations, and wind power stations. Measured data of electricity generation from photovoltaic power plants, wind power plants, and mini-hydropower plants and obtained meteorological factors were used for the calculation of Spearman's, Kendall's, and Pearson's correlation rank coefficients. The main contribution of this research is to determine the main metrological factors for each kind of studied RES. In the future, it will help to decide the task of forecasting power generation more presciently. Additionally, the presented model of DT RESs allows the installation and operation of grids with higher efficiency, because it can help to predict all influences, from shading up to the optimization of the battery storage system. The main target is the maximization of the output power of PEM "proton exchange membrane" fuel cell via fuzzy modelling and optimization. In the beginning, using the experimental data, a robust fuzzy model is designed for simulating the PEM fuel cell using the relative humidity (%) and stoichiometric ratio at the anode and cathode. Then, the artificial ecosystem optimiser (AEO) is applied to determine the best values of the controlling input parameters. During the optimization process, the four controlling input parameters of the PEMFC are used as the decision variables, whereas as the cost function is required to be at the maximum of the output power density of the PEMFC. For the fuzzy model of the power, the RMSE values are 1.5588 and 3.1906, respectively, for training and testing data. The coefficient of determination values are 0.9826 and 0.8743 for training and testing, respectively. This confirms a successful modelling phase. Finally, the integration between fuzzy and AEO boosted the power of the PEMFC from 57.95 W to 78.44 W (by around 35%). Under this optimal condition, the controlling input parameters values are 26.65%, 56.77%, 1.14, and 1.68, respectively, for anode relative humidity, cathode relative humidity, anode stoichiometric ratio and cathode stoichiometric ratio. The present study, however, intends to highlight the importance of fuzzy modelling and metaheuristic algorithms in the development of digital twins to accelerate the commercialization of fuel cells as well as its applicability in diverse global economic sectors where a higher power requirement is needed. It is also aimed at informing the fuel cell research community and policy makers on strategies that could be adopted in boosting fuel cell performance and therefore could be a good reference source in decision-making for fuel cell commercialization and its practical implementation. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the future digitalization of microgrids to meet the increasing energy demand. It begins with an overview of the background of microgrids, including their components and configurations, control and management strategies, and optimization techniques. It then discusses the key digital technologies that can be used to improve the performance of microgrids, including distributed energy resources management systems, the Internet of Things, big data analytics, blockchain technology, artificial intelligence, digital twin technology, cloud computing, and augmented reality. The paper also highlights the importance of cybersecurity in microgrids, identifying the potential security vulnerabilities and threats to microgrid cybersecurity, as well as strategies for addressing these challenges. Finally, the paper discusses the barriers and challenges regarding the digitalization of microgrids, including technical complexity, high implementation costs, regulatory barriers, data privacy and security concerns, lack of standardization, interoperability issues, limited technical expertise, and integration with the main grid. Overall, this paper demonstrates the significant potential for digital technologies to transform the future of microgrids. By leveraging advanced technologies and implementing effective cybersecurity measures, microgrids can become more efficient, reliable, and resilient, enabling them to meet the growing demand for energy and contribute to a sustainable energy future. Globally, renewable energy-based power generation is experiencing exponential growth due to concerns over the environmental impacts of traditional power generation methods. Microgrids (MGs) are commonly employed to integrate renewable sources due to their distributed nature, with batteries often used to compensate for power fluctuations caused by the intermittency of renewable energy sources. However, sudden fluctuations in the power supply can negatively impact battery performance, making it challenging to select an appropriate battery energy storage system (BESS) at the design stage of an MG. The cycle count of a battery in relation to battery stress is a useful measure for determining the general health of a battery and can aid in BESS selection. An accurate digital replica of an MG is required to determine the required cycle count and stress levels of a BESS. The Digital Twin (DT) concept can be used to replicate the dynamics of the MG in a virtual environment, allowing for the estimation of required cycle numbers and applied stress levels to a BESS. This paper presents a Microgrid Digital Twin (MGDT) model that can estimate the required cycle count and stress levels of a BESS without considering any unique battery type. Based on the results, designers can select an appropriate BESS for the MG, and the MGDT can also be used to roughly estimate the health of the currently operating BESS, allowing for cost-effective predictive maintenance scheduling for MGs. In microgrids (MGs), energy management systems (EMSs) have been using increasingly detailed models of generation units, loads, and networks to make decisions on the power/energy contribution of each available unit to meet the electrical energy demand. This work aims to investigate the use of digital twins (DT) of small productive processes (SPPs) to regulate endogenous process variables to ensure final product quality, while the expected power consumption is estimated and communicated to the EMS so that it can make its decisions on the participation of each power source in meeting the electrical energy demand. The literature review reveals that this is one of the first attempts, in the context of MGs, to generate DT for SPPs that combine not only the electrical energy consumption, but also link it with the energy/mass balances taking place in the SPPs, highlighting the complexity that SPPs have as electrical loads. The results demonstrate that environmental conditions significantly influence the final electrical consumption of the SPPs. Additionally, the MG exhibits better economic performance when the SPP DT supports EMS decision-making, which is of great importance in MGs due to the special conditions they have for electric power generation, being more challenging in isolated MGs. Logistics and transport are major sources of energy consumption that still rely heavily on fossil fuels. Especially in the freight sector, finding means to optimise fuel consumption and energy efficiency are increasingly important. Digital twins' adaptation in logistics and transport is not as frequent as in production, but their implementation potential is immense. This technology can replicate real environments, allowing verification of various scenarios without real-life application, leading to optimal implementation outcome faster and more efficiently. This paper aims to research digital twins' use in logistics and transport, focusing on digital twins' potential and effects to optimise energy consumption. Firstly, previous research on digital twins in specified fields was identified, followed by a quantitative literature review. The latter focused on codifying the selected publications based on criteria such as modality, specific environment, energy consumption, etc. Furthermore, a qualitative overview of 57 relevant publications on digital twins' use in logistics and transport was made. The main contribution of this paper is the systematic overview of digital twins from the viewpoint of energy optimisation in one of the most energy-dependent sectors.
