Cement-based materials encompass a broad spectrum of construction materials that utilize cement as the primary binding agent. Among these materials, concrete stands out as the most commonly employed. The cement, which is the principal constituent of these materials, undergoes a hydration reaction with water, playing a crucial role in the formation of the hardened composite. However, the exothermic nature of this reaction leads to significant temperature rise within the concrete elements, particularly during the early stages of hardening and in structures of substantial thickness. This temperature rise underscores the critical importance of predictive modeling in this domain. This paper presents a review of modeling approaches designed to predict temperature and accompanying moisture fields during concrete hardening, examining different levels of modeling accuracy and essential input parameters. While modern commercial finite element method (FEM) software programs are available for simulating thermal and moisture fields in concrete, they are accompanied by inherent limitations that engineers must know. The authors further evaluate effective commercial software tools tailored for predicting these effects, intending to provide construction engineers and stakeholders with guidance on managing temperature and moisture impacts in early-age concrete. The composite of a phase change material (PCM) and bitumen or asphalt as a matrix is expected as a new, advanced material for road construction. The main motivation for this article was to show the new possibilities and perspectives of developing the pavement with the usage of PCMs. Incorporating PCMs into paving materials can improve their properties, including allowing the regulation of the pavement temperature, enhancement of the pavement durability, and avoiding the phenomenon of a heat-island on the road. The main purpose of this article was to evaluate contemporary investigations in the area of the application of PCMs in pavement materials, especially asphalt and bitumen; to summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of PCM for road construction; and to discuss further trends in this area. This manuscript explored the state of the art in this area based on research in the literature. It shows the possible material solutions, presenting their composition and discussing their key properties and the manufacturing technologies used. It is of meaningful importance to evaluate the performance of all the nuclear facilities, and particularly those part of such buildings where spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is stored to assess what kinds of consequences are anomalous/abnormal or to determine what types of accident events may occur. In this preliminary study, the strategies adopted for the management of SNF, and the risk related to them are discussed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the total radioactivity inventory characterising Ukrainian nuclear facilities, including storage facilities. The dataset used to calculate the total activity associated with nuclear fuel is provided and discussed. For the evaluation, it is considered that a SNF pool in VVER-1000 is designed to store 687 fuel assemblies, and 670 are in VVER-440. When it is half full, which is the case for 15 Ukrainian units, it will store about 2200 tU containing up to 1·1019 Bq of 137Cs, 7·1018 Bq of 90Sr, and 1·1019 Bq of TUE. This study focuses particularly on the total activity of the SNF stored at the Zaporozhye plant, the biggest nuclear plant in Europe, and the risk posed by the potential loss that cooling the plant could incur because of pond water level variation. The results of the analysis of the Zaporozhye NPP behaviour suggest that the water flow rate which keeps the SNF pool temperature constant is about 200,000 m3·day−1. Therefore, the water level in the pond should not be lower than 1.5–2 m; otherwise, the plant will need an additional source of water of more than 200,000 m3 per day to guarantee safe storage of SNF. The search for environmentally friendly and low-carbon-footprint construction materials continues progressively. Researchers are now interested in innovative materials that connect with the principles of sustainable construction, and materials such as hemp concrete prove to be promising. This article presents the results of a study that aimed to evaluate the hygrothermal performance of hemp concrete integrated into the building envelope using the hygrothermal tool WUFI Pro 6.2. The simulation model was compared and verified with existing models before its utilization for this study. The results of this verification were in good agreement, which gave us more confidence in its application for further parametric studies of building envelopes in hot climate zones. Three wall systems were simulated: (i) a wall system with hemp concrete, (ii) a compressed earth block wall, and (iii) a cement block wall. The most important variables used in the simulations were the hygrothermal properties of the materials or wall components and the incident solar radiation. The simulation results showed that hemp concrete has good thermal performance and temperature and humidity regulation capabilities of the building envelope. The interior surface temperatures of the hemp concrete walls were between 22.1 °C and 24.6 °C compared to the compressed earth block and cement block walls, where the surface temperatures were between 22.0 °C and 27 °C and between 21.2 °C and 28.7 °C, respectively, and between 23 °C and 45 °C for the exterior temperatures. These values remain the same with the increase in exterior temperatures for hemp concrete walls. Technologies that can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases are mandatory, and those based on solar energy are good candidates to achieve this. In this sense, massive solar thermal collectors are suitable technologies for supplying the primary energy demand of buildings. To design these devices, it is necessary to fully understand the physics of the problem before proposing any new optimized solution. This review aims to briefly summarize significant aspects regarding the current state of development of these solar technologies. Attention is paid to works devoted to experimental studies to analyze the behavior of these systems, as well as numerical models to predict the physics of the problem. Furthermore, the future directions and prospects in the field of massive collectors are briefly described. The main novelty of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview that summarizes the works done so far in the field over the past 30 years, which allows the reader to delve deeper into the topic. According to the reviewed works, it can be concluded that these technologies can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases while at the same time being excellent examples of the integration of solar energy devices with buildings. Radiation cooling, as a new terminal mode that has been gradually emerging in recent years, has attracted more and more attention. However, the problem of condensation has become a vital bottleneck restricting the broad application of radiation-cooling technology. This paper used the numerical simulation method of Ansys Fluent to study the effect of different water supply parameters on the concrete radiant roof's heat transfer performance, temperature uniformity analysis, and anti-condensation temperature control strategy. The accuracy of the simulation model was verified by comparing the numerical simulation values and measured values of temperature monitoring points. In thermal performance research, the inlet temperature significantly impacted the cooling capacity and radiant surface temperature compared with the inlet flow velocity. In the uniformity study, the distance between the serpentine pipes area and the concrete edge was easily neglected, which was also an important factor affecting the distribution of temperature uniformity. Regarding anti-condensation and performance improvement research, first supplying water at low temperatures and then dynamically adjusting high-temperature water could effectively avoid condensation and improve the radiant roof's heat transfer performance. Rapid construction with an energy-efficient approach is a major challenge in the present construction industry. Cement, a carbon-intensive material, is mainly used in the construction industry and hence increases the sector's carbon footprint on the environment. The current review focuses on the study of 3D concrete printing (3DCP), in which cement is partially replaced with industrial byproducts such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), fly ash, and silica fume. Walling material is primarily targeted in 3DCP. There is a need to include energy efficiency to achieve a thermally comfortable environment. The life cycle assessment (LCA) of concrete is studied to discover the potential conflicts affecting the environment. The sand-to-binder ratio is pivotal in determining the performance of concrete. The content of the supplements is decided based on this factor. The rheological, physical, and mechanical properties of 3DCP are studied further and analysed. GGBS demonstrates better performance in the compressive and flexure strength of concrete. The usage of fly ash and silica fume has reduced the thermal conductivity of the material, whereas GGBS has increased it. The construction world has changed day by day and is becoming more digitalized by introducing new technologies. Three-dimensional concrete printing (3DCP) is one such technology that has automated building process along with several benefits such as reduced material waste, reduced human hazard, and time savings. Traditionally, this technique utilizes cement to construct numerous structures, resulting in a significant carbon footprint and negative environmental impact. There is a need to find alternate solutions to reduce cement consumption. Alkali activation technology has replaced cement completely. The scope of development of alkali-activated 3D printable concrete utilizing agro-industrial byproducts is presented in this study. A review of the fresh and hardened properties of alkali-activated 3D printable concrete was the primary objective. The change in properties of 3D concrete mixes with the variation of additives that influence the ultimate strength parameters is presented. This study explores the curing conditions and in-depth behavior of uses of 3DCP in the construction industry. The environmental benefits over conventional concreting technology are presented. As per previous studies, the optimum mix composition per cubic meter concrete is 600–700 kg/m3 of binder content, 450 kg/m3 of alkali activator solution, and 600–800 kg/m3 of fine aggregate content. Studies have reported the incorporation of microorganisms into cement to promote the formation of calcium carbonate in cracks of concrete, a process known as biomineralization. The paper aims to improve the process of the cascade system for biomineralization in cement by identifying the best hydrodynamic conditions in a reaction cell in order to increase the useful life of concrete structures and, therefore, bring energy and environmental benefits. Two central composite rotatable designs were used to establish the positioning of the air inlet and outlet in the lateral or upper region of the geometry of the reaction cell. The geometries of the reaction cell were constructed in SOLIDWORKS®, and computational fluid dynamics was performed using the Flow Simulation tool of the same software. The results were submitted to statistical analysis. The best combination of meshes for the simulation was global mesh 4 and local mesh 5. The statistical analysis applied to gas velocity and pressure revealed that air flow rate was the factor with the greatest sensitivity, with R 2 values up to 99.9%. The nuclear industry is exploring applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including autonomous control and management of reactors and components. A condition assessment framework that utilizes AI and sensor data is an important part of such an autonomous control system. A nuclear power plant has various structures, systems, and components (SSCs) such as piping-equipment that carries coolant to the reactor. Piping systems can degrade over time because of flow-accelerated corrosion and erosion. Any cracks and leakages can cause loss of coolant accident (LOCA). The current industry standards for conducting maintenance of vital SSCs can be time and cost-intensive. AI can play a greater role in the condition assessment and can be extended to recognize concrete degradation (chloride-induced damage and alkali–silica reaction) before cracks develop. This paper reviews developments in condition assessment and AI applications of structural and mechanical systems. The applicability of existing techniques to nuclear systems is somewhat limited because its response requires characterization of high and low-frequency vibration modes, whereas previous studies focus on systems where a single vibration mode can define the degraded state. The production of cement accounts for 5 to 7% of carbon dioxide emissions in the world, and its broad-scale use contributes to climate imbalance. As a solution, biotechnology enables the cultivation of bacteria and fungi for the synthesis of calcium carbonate as one of the main constituents of cement. Through biomineralization, which is the initial driving force for the synthesis of compounds compatible with concrete, and crystallization, these compounds can be delivered to cracks in concrete. Microencapsulation is a method that serves as a clock to determine when crystallization is needed, which is assisted by control factors such as pH and aeration. The present review addresses possibilities of working with bioconcrete, describing the composition of Portland cement, analysis methods, deterioration, as well as environmental and energetic benefits of using such an alternative material. A discussion on carbon credits is also offered. The contents of this paper could strengthen the prospects for the use of self-healing concrete as a way to meet the high demand for concrete, contributing to the building of a sustainable society. This work assesses the energy requirements and CO2 emissions of a building made of Lime Hemp Concrete (LHC) with alternative unfired binders as lime replacement, compared to buildings made of standard LHC, and several conventional building materials. The assessment is based on ISO 14040, which deals with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and examines two aspects: energy, including pre-use phase Embodied Energy (EE), and use phase Operational Energy (OE); and CO2 emissions, including pre-use phase Embodied Carbon (EC), and use phase Operational Carbon (OC). The EE and EC calculations are based on published databases, while OE and OC were obtained with EnergyPlus simulations. The assessment refers to a specific case study in an arid region, with extreme diurnal and seasonal fluctuations of temperature and relative humidity. Using LHC with 100% unfired binder as lime replacement was shown to save up to 90% of the total energy consumption and CO2 emissions, as compared to conventional building materials. The findings of this research clearly demonstrate the high potential of LHC with unfired binders as lime replacement, which possesses the lowest energy requirements and CO2 emissions, illustrating the potential for a building with significantly low environmental impact over its life cycle, i.e., when calculating both EE and EC, and OE and OC. Over the past several decades, the international community has been actively engaged in developing a safe method for isolating spent nuclear fuel, high and intermediate level radioactive wase of different degrees of heat generation in deep geological formations on the basis of regulatory requirements existing in each individual country (for example, in the Russian Federation-NP-055-14). Such a storage facility should be equipped with an engineered safety barrier system that combines a range of materials capable of ensuring the safe localization of environmentally and health-threatening nuclear power generation industry and the nuclear industry waste products, in particular. On the basis of the international experience discussed in this article on the design and operation of such facilities, the most universal material in terms of the functions performed as a component of the engineered barrier system is cement and the cement-based product mixed with various components—concrete. Furthermore, due to the possible mutual influence of buffer materials and their transformation over time at interfaces, this work considers the impact of cement-based barriers on other components of engineered barrier systems, the information on which has been accumulated as a result of both analytical laboratory tests and in situ radioactive waste disposal facilities under construction. Disposal of the coal fly ash (CFA) generated from thermal power plants in huge quantities is one of the major concerns for the industry, as well as the natural environment. On the other hand, CFA can be used within a certain percentage range in the cement concrete mix as a replacement for cement. Nanomaterials can also be used to improve the properties of concrete. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of nanosilica (nS) on the mechanical parameters and microstructure of CFA cement concretes. This study utilized an nS content of 5%, along with three CFA contents, i.e., of 0, 15, and 25% by volume. Mechanical property tests and a thorough overview of changes in the structure of modified concrete were carried out to study the effect of the CFA content on the analyzed parameters of concrete containing nS. This study had the goal of elucidating the reinforcing mechanisms of CFA concrete by nS and providing design guidance for the practical engineering applications of CFA-nS composites. Based on the conducted studies, it was found that the combined usage of nS and CFA has synergistic and positive effects on improving mechanical parameters and microstructure in such concretes. The combined strengthening of a cement matrix by nS and CFA can fill the pores and microcracks in concrete composites and effectively improve the mechanical properties and microstructure of such materials. In this study, the optimal improvement was achieved when the concentration of additions was 5% nS and 15% CFA. The 28-day compressive strength and splitting tensile strength were increased by 37.68 and 36.21%, respectively, in comparison to control concrete. Tailored blended cements composed of nS and CFA content (up to 30% replacement level) can significantly improve the parameters of concrete composites, as well as reduce the carbon footprint of cement-based materials—constituting a step toward the production of eco-friendly concretes. Concrete, an integral part of a nuclear power plant (NPP), experiences degradation during their operational lifetime of the plant. In this review, the major causes of concrete degradation are extensively discussed including mechanisms that are specific to NPPs. The damage mechanism could be chemical or physical. The major causes of chemical degradation include alkali–aggregate reactions, leaching, sulfate attack, bases and acids attack, and carbonation. Physical degradation is a consequence of both environmental and mechanical factors combined. These factors are mainly elevated temperature, radiation, abrasion and erosion, salt crystallization, freeze–thaw distortions, fatigue and vibration. Additionally, steel reinforcements, prestressing steels, liner plates, and structural steel also experience degradation. The prospective areas in the structural components of the NPP where the degradation could occur are mentioned and the effective solutions to the causes of degradation are highlighted. These solutions are designed to enhance the physical and chemical characteristics of concrete. Some of the major recommendations include addition of mineral substitutes, use of low water-to-cement ratio as well as low water-to-binder ratio, use of low alkali cement, use of special aggregates and fibers, use of corrosion inhibitors, use of cathodic protection, etc. The review concludes with an overview of present methods and possible recommendations used to enhance the quality of concrete towards preventing concrete degradation and increasing the lifetime of NPPs. In recent years, concrete has been accessible and economical in the construction industry, resulting in high demand for its components. Cement is known for its negative impact on the environment, which has led researchers to investigate alternative supplementary materials. Recently, biochar has been proposed as a replacement to cement in small amounts, with an optimum amount of 0.08–5, resulting in increased strength and enhancement of other properties of concrete composites. The biochar production process and its components are more economical and environmentally friendly than that of cement. In this review, we focus on research highlighting the properties of biochar that aid in the enhancement of biochar mortar and concrete composite properties. We explore properties of biochar such as water absorption, as well as compressive, flexural and tensile strength. Progress has been made in research on biochar concrete composites; however, additional investigations are required with respect to its carbon-sequestering abilities and life cycle assessment for its production process. The pore space of autoclaved aerated concretes (ACCs), regardless of their apparent density, is represented by large pores formed as a result of gas formation and fine capillary pores. With the free absorption of liquid moisture, only the capillary pores are filled. Large pores contain vapor-air mixture. Considering such a bimodal pore size distribution, it is proposed to determine the thermal conductivity of moist ACC in two stages. First, an inhomogeneous ternary system that consists of a solid skeleton with a fine porous structure containing gas and liquid moisture should be considered. Then a binary system is taken into account, the first component of which is the mentioned ternary system, and the other component of which consists of isolated gas inclusions in large pores. To determine the thermal conductivity of the ternary system, the dependences constructed using the theory of generalized conductivity were used. The thermal conductivity of the binary system was calculated using well-known formulas. It was found that the results of thermal conductivity calculations based on the proposed two-step method deviate from the experimental data in the range from −7.29 to +5.75%, with an average deviation of −0.71%. With the one-step calculation method (assuming a unimodal pore distribution), the spread of analogous data ranges from −30.72 to −21.98%, with an average deviation of −26%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tower foundations have been used as grounding electrodes to reduce the area of the grounding devices. However, it is difficult to calculate the grounding resistance due to the complex structure of the reinforced concrete foundation. A method for calculating grounding resistance of reinforced concrete foundations is proposed in this paper. The method equates the complex foundation structure into a cylindrical conductor and then calculates the grounding resistance with the help of the method of moments, which simplifies establishment of the simulation model and reduces the extensive computation. In addition, the applicability of the equal cross-sectional area method and the equal cross-sectional perimeter method is analyzed. It shows that both methods are applicable only when the concrete resistivity is close to the soil resistivity. The equal cross-sectional area method is applicable when the concrete resistivity is within twice the soil resistivity, while the equal cross-sectional perimeter method is applicable when the concrete resistivity is approximately same or less than the resistivity of the soil. The article presents a set of experimental-static models of the properties of fine-grained concretes on a cement–slag binder and quartz sand with the addition of a hardening accelerator made on a 3D printer. The influence of the factors of the composition of the mixture and the effects of their interaction on the studied properties of concrete was established. By analyzing the models, the influence of the factors of mixture composition on the studied properties was ranked. The nature and degree of interrelation of individual properties of concrete are shown. A method for calculating the optimal compositions of concrete for a 3D printer, providing the specified properties at a minimum cost, is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermal energy storage (TES) allows the existing mismatch between supply and demand in energy systems to be overcome. Considering temperatures above 150 °C, there are major potential benefits for applications, such as process heat and electricity production, where TES coupled with concentrating solar power (CSP) plants can increase the penetration of renewable energies. To this end, this paper performs a critical analysis of the literature on the current and most promising concrete energy storage technologies, identifying five challenges that must be overcome for the successful exploitation of this technology. With these five challenges in mind, this paper proposes an approach that uses a new modular design of concrete-based TES. Currently, waste generation is a huge problem all over the world. The largest source of generated waste is plastics from plastic packaging made of polyethylene and polypropylene, including PET bottles. Modern ecology aims to reduce the carbon footprint by recycling plastics or by producing biodegradable plastics that are completely broken down by microorganisms into simple particles that occur naturally in nature. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has good mechanical properties but is resistant to microorganisms. As a result, it cannot be classified as a biodegradable plastic, but when it is reused for the production of utility products, it becomes a bioplastic. A good way to dispose of PET is to use it for the production of utility products, in which its good mechanical properties can be used. Concrete is a basic material, the consumption of which in the construction industry is enormous. One of the negative features of concrete is its low tensile strength, which can be improved with continuous or dispersed reinforcement. This paper presents the results of compressive and tensile-bending tests of concrete reinforced with dispersed "fibres" of a different length and width, which were produced by a prototype device from PET beverage bottles. The prototype device enables repeatable fibres with a width of 2 mm, and lengths of 38 mm, 62 mm, and 93 mm to be obtained. The highest flexural tensile strength of the concrete was achieved in the case of the PET fibres with a length of 62 mm. It turned out that concrete with such reinforcement has a higher bending tensile strength by 15 % in relation to the tensile bending strength of the concrete without the dispersed reinforcement. The PET fibres also improve compressive strength. PET fibres, in order not to deteriorate in the alkaline environment of concrete, must be secured with an appropriate chemical agent. The effect of concrete reinforcement with the recycled PET fibres was compared to the effect of dispersed reinforcement made of polypropylene and steel fibres. The highest bending tensile strength was obtained in the case of the concretes with the scattered PET reinforcement. However, the differences in the bending tensile strength of concrete are not big and are equal to 0.64 MPa for polypropylene fibres and only 0.09 MPa for steel fibres. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated an indirect evaporative cooling system (IECS) to control latent heat loss on roof ponds by increasing the evaporation rates on wet fabric membranes. The cooling potential of the proposed system was experimentally tested in a real environment and it was compared against a roof pond and a floating fiber (gunny bags) to provide an efficient model for buildings in hot and humid climates. Dry bulb temperatures (DBT) are presented for four experimental models. Solar irradiance, ambient and indoor dry bulb temperatures, and relative humidity (RH) were measured for seven days in each of the following climate conditions: hot sub-humid (mean DBT 27.3 °C and mean RH 72%), hot humid (mean DBT 27.1 °C and mean RH 81%), and warm sub-humid (mean DBT 25.2 °C and mean RH 68%). There were no significant variations in thermal performance between the examined devices under hot humid conditions; however, the wet fabric device had superior thermal performance under sub-humid conditions when compared to the other IECSs. In the three climatic scenarios where the proposed system was tested, the wet fabric managed to reduce the indoor air temperature by 6.6 °C, 5.3 °C, and 5.1 °C, respectively, as compared to the outdoor air temperatures. Climate change and fossil fuel depletion foster interest in improving energy efficiency in buildings. There are different methods to achieve improved efficiency; one of them is the use of additives, such as phase change materials (PCMs). To prove this method's effectiveness, a building's behaviour should be monitored and analysed. This paper describes an acquisition system developed for monitoring buildings based on Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and with a 1-wire bus network as the communication system. The system is empirically tested to prove that it works properly. With this purpose, two experimental cubicles are made of self-compacting concrete panels, one of which has a PCM as an additive to improve its energy storage properties. Both cubicles have the same dimensions and orientation, and they are separated by six feet to avoid shadows. The behaviour of the PCM was observed with the acquisition system, achieving results that illustrate the differences between the cubicles directly related to the PCM's characteristics. Data collection devices included in the system were temperature sensors, some of which were embedded in the walls, as well as humidity sensors, heat flux density sensors, a weather station and energy counters. The analysis of the results shows agreement with previous studies of PCM addition; therefore, the acquisition system is suitable for this application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using concrete as a thermal energy storage (TES) material is a promising option for large-scale solar-thermal resource development and utilization. Specific heat is one of the most important characteristics for TES performance. In this paper, the half-open dynamic method based on the mixing principle is proposed and applied to measure concrete-specific heat at temperatures up to 600 °C. Measurement of the specific heat of corundum ceramic (99% Al2O3) is first performed, and the test results illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed test method. Furthermore, concrete-specific heat tests are carried out at high temperatures. It found that the specific heat increases as the temperature rises, especially, linearly in the range of 300-600 °C, in which the concrete TES module is expected to be in operation. Several techniques for cooling mass concrete structures were developed in order to increase structural integrity and reduce the influence of cement hydration, which sometimes causes cracking in concrete structures, negatively affecting their durability. This research focuses on cooling system design, initial investment, and the influence of different refrigerants on cooling system performance aims in producing higher quality massive concrete. Cooling aggregates in massive concrete structures such as desert dams can be performed by employing cooled air from an air conditioning duct system or chilled water. The experimental study illustrates the relationship between the coefficient of performance COP, the evaporator temperature, cooling capacity, and refrigerant mass flow rate as a function of the evaporator temperature, cooling capacity, and refrigerant mass flow rate. The findings of the experiments were utilized to verify a numerical model developed utilizing engineering equation solver (EES) software. The performance of the vapor compression of the cooling systems was compared using alternative refrigerants, including R22, R32, and R410a at different operating conditions. 3D concrete printing has gained tremendous popularity as a promising technique with the potential to remarkably push the boundaries of conventional concrete technology. Enormous research efforts have been directed towards improving the material properties and structural safety of 3D printed concrete (3DPC) over the last decade. In contrast, little attention has been accorded to its sustainability performance in the built environment. This study compares the energy efficiency, operational carbon emission, and thermal comfort of air cavity 3DPC building envelopes against insulated models. Four insulations, namely expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS), polyurethane foam (PUF), and fiberglass (FG), are iteratively paired with three different 3DPC mix designs, and their resulting performances are reported. A numerical optimization analysis is performed to obtain combinations of 3DPC building models and insulation with the least energy expenditure, carbon production, and thermal efficiency. The results indicate that insulation considerably enhances the overall environmental performance of 3DPC structures. The optimization process also demonstrates the potential of using 3D printable fiber reinforced engineered cementitious concrete (3DPFRECC) with polyurethane infill for amplified sustainable performance in modern construction. This state of the art review paper aims to discuss the results of a literature survey on possible ways to reinforce printed concrete based on existing reinforcement strategies. Just as conventional concrete, for 3D printed concrete to be suitable for large-scale construction, reinforcement is needed to increase the tensile capacity of concrete members and reduce temperature and shrinkage cracking. Despite efforts that are currently underway, the development of proper reinforcement suitable for printed concrete is still very active on the research agenda. As an initial step for designing suitable reinforcement for printed concrete, the existing reinforcement methods for printed concrete as well as conventional cast concrete from the literature are reviewed and summarized. Through the preliminary evaluation of the suitability and effectiveness of various reinforcement methods, guidelines are proposed to better understand possible solutions to reinforce printed concrete and inspire new practical ideas to fill the current technology void. Six supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) were identified to be incorporated in concrete exposed to high-temperature cycling conditions within the thermal energy storage literature. The selected SCMs are bauxite, chamotte, ground granulated blast furnace slag, iron silicate, silica fume, and steel slag. A microstructural characterization was carried out through an optical microscope, X-ray diffraction analysis, and FT-IR. Also, a pozzolanic test was performed to study the reaction of SCMs silico-aluminous components. The formation of calcium silica hydrate was observed in all SCMs pozzolanic test. Steel slag, iron silicate, and ground granulated blast furnace slag required further milling to enhance cement reaction. Moreover, the tensile strength of three fibers (polypropylene, steel, and glass fibers) was tested after exposure to an alkalinity environment at ambient temperature during one and three months. Large-scale water infrastructure such as immersed tunnels remain in a seawater environment for a long time, and gradually deteriorate under the action of high water head, soil pressure and corrosive ions in seawater solution. In order to simulate the corrosion damage and deterioration of concrete in seawater environment, 10% Na2SO4 solution was used to conduct indoor corrosion tests on concrete samples under different water heads and for different durations. The corrosion damage and micro-mechanical properties of concrete under the coupled action of high water head and sulfate are studied by micro-indentation tests. The effect of sulfate ion corrosion and complex mechanical loading was studied. The effect of micro-mechanical properties of concrete is studied on time and space. Numerical simulation and test results show that the results of micro-indentation are in good agreement with the fitting curves. The chemical damage rate and the corrosion depth increase with the increase of water head; the numerical simulation analysis shows that the sulfate concentration is high in the area where the mechanical damage variable is large, which indicates that the two kinds of corrosion occur in concrete and interact with each other. This paper aimed at evaluating the influence of different site conditions on the impact response of the structure of nuclear power plants (NPPs) against a large commercial aircraft. The lumped parameter site dynamic model recommended by the code of ASCE 4-98 was used to consider the different homogeneous sites. With respect to the excellent impact resistant performance of steel-plate concrete (SC) structure, the full SC containment is selected as the research object. The impact analysis of the full SC containment against a large commercial aircraft under different site conditions was carried out, based on the force time-history analysis method. The numerical results in terms of the displacement, plastic strain, local concrete damage, and different values of energy were evaluated. The results showed that: (1) For the relatively thin full SC containment, the impact response under the fixed boundary is the largest, while that calculated by other, different sites varies greatly, and there is no consistent rule, the boundary condition which is assumed to be fixed is relatively conservative. (2) For the thicker full SC containment, the displacement response decreased with the increasing of the site shear wave velocity, which is the smallest when the fixed boundary is considered. When the shear wave velocity of the site is large enough, its boundary condition which is assumed to be the fixed constraint is reasonable. (3) For the relatively thin full SC containment, the site damping effect has a significant effect on the structural impact response. Nevertheless, the impact response of the thicker containment is slightly influenced by the site damping effect. (4) For the impact analysis of the structures of NPPs against a large commercial aircraft, it is suggested that both the specific site condition and fixed boundary should be considered. The article presents studies of plain concretes prepared based on a quaternary binder containing various percentages of selected supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). The possibilities of nanotechnology in concrete technology were also used. An additional important environmental goal of the proposed solution was to create the possibility of reducing CO2 emissions and the carbon footprint generated during the production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). As the main substitute for the OPC, siliceous fly ash (FA) was used. Moreover, silica fume (SF) and nanosilica (nS) were also used. During examinations, the main mechanical properties of composites, i.e., compressive strength (fcm) and splitting tensile strength (fctm), were assessed. The microstructure of these materials was also analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). In addition to the experimental research, simulations of the possible reduction of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, as a result of the proposed solutions, were also carried out. It was found that the quaternary concrete is characterized by a well-developed structure and has high values of mechanical parameters. Furthermore, the use of green concrete based on quaternary binders enables a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. Therefore quaternary green concrete containing SCMs could be a useful alternative to plain concretes covering both the technical and environmental aspects. The present study indicates that quaternary binders can perform better than OPC as far as mechanical properties and microstructures are concerned. Thermal energy storage (TES) systems for concentrated solar power plants are essential for the convenience of renewable energy sources in terms of energy dispatchability, economical aspects and their larger use. TES systems based on the use of concrete have been demonstrated to possess good heat exchange characteristics, wide availability of the heat storage medium and low cost. Therefore, the purpose of this work was the development and characterization of a new concrete-based heat storage material containing a concrete mix capable of operating at medium–high temperatures with improved performance. In this work, a small amount of shape-stabilized phase change material (PCM) was included, thus developing a new material capable of storing energy both as sensible and latent heat. This material was therefore characterized thermally and mechanically and showed increased thermal properties such as stored energy density (up to +7%, with a temperature difference of 100 °C at an average operating temperature of 250 °C) when 5 wt% of PCM was added. By taking advantage of these characteristics, particularly the higher energy density, thermal energy storage systems that are more compact and economically feasible can be built to operate within a temperature range of approximately 150–350 °C with a reduction, compared to a concrete-only based thermal energy storage system, of approximately 7% for the required volume and cost. Steam accumulation is one of the most effective ways of thermal energy storage (TES) for the solar thermal energy (STE) industry. However, the steam accumulator concept is penalized by a bad relationship between the volume and the energy stored; moreover, its discharge process shows a decline in pressure, failing to reach nominal conditions in the turbine. From the economic point of view, between 60% and 70% of the cost of a steam accumulator TES is that of the pressure vessel tanks (defined as US$/kWhth). Since the current trend is based on increasing hours of storage in order to improve dispatchability levels in solar plants, the possibility of cost reduction is directly related to the cost of the material of pressure vessels, which is a market price. Therefore, in the present paper, a new design for steam accumulation is presented, focusing on innovative materials developed specifically for this purpose: two special concretes that compose the accumulation tank wall. Study of dosages, selection of materials and, finally, scale up on-field tests for their proper integration, fabrication and construction in prototype are the pillars of this new steam accumulation tank. Establishing clear and precise requirements and instructions for successful tank construction is necessary due to the highly sensitive and variable nature of those new concrete formulations. The characterization of materials, stress and fatigue state monitoring based on the acoustoelastic principle are gaining widespread attention in recent years, mainly due to their advantages such as high sensitivity and non-destructive character. This article presents the application of a non-destructive acoustic method to test the degree of degradation of materials with which the heating boiler is coated. The combustion chamber is covered in materials when the temperature of the process itself increases, and has a very positive effect on fuel combustion. Unfortunately, with the passage of time, such materials undergo gradation. This article describes an innovative measuring system that has been successfully applied to monitor changes in resonance frequency under uniaxial compression in refractory grade material, which by definition is characterized by a high level of heterogeneity with a network of pre-existing cracks. The paper indicates that both stress and elasticity coefficients have an impact on the vibration frequency of the measuring system. Today's offshore wind turbine support structures market is largely dominated by steel structures, since steel monopiles account for the vast majority of installations in the last decade and new types of multi-leg steel structures have been developed in recent years. However, as wind turbines become bigger, and potential sites for offshore wind farms are located in ever deeper waters and ever further from the shore, the conditions for the design, transport, and installation of support structures are changing. In light of these facts, this paper identifies and categorizes the challenges and future trends related to the use of concrete for support structures of future offshore wind projects. To do so, recent advances and technologies still under development for both bottom-fixed and floating concrete support structures have been reviewed. It was found that these new developments meet the challenges associated with the use of concrete support structures, as they will allow the production costs to be lowered and transport and installation to be facilitated. New technologies for concrete support structures used at medium and great water depths are also being developed and are expected to become more common in future offshore wind installations. Therefore, the new developments identified in this paper show the likelihood of an increase in the use of concrete support structures in future offshore wind farms. These developments also indicate that the complexity of future support structures will increase due to the development of hybrid structures combining steel and concrete. These evolutions call for new knowledge and technical know-how in order to allow reliable structures to be built and risk-free offshore installation to be executed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents results of tests on the effect of the addition of fly ash (FA) in the amounts of 0%, 20%, and 30% by weight of cement on the interfacial microcracks in concrete composites subjected to dynamic loads. The analyses were carried out based on the results of the microstructural tests using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The average width of the microcracks (Wc) in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) of coarse aggregate with cement matrix was evaluated. During the studies beneficial effect of the addition of FA on reduction of the size of Wc in the ITZ of concrete composites under dynamic loading were observed. Based on obtained test results, it was found that using the 20% FA additive causes favorable changes in the microstructure of mature concrete. In this composite, the average value of Wc was lower by more than 40% compared to the result obtained for the reference concrete. In contrast, concrete containing 30% FA additive had greater microcracks in the ITZ area by over 60% compared to the material without additive. In all analyzed composites, an increase in the Wc value by almost 70% to over 110% in the case of occurrence of dynamic loads was also observed. The construction industry is responsible for a large amount of both embodied carbon and emissions. Especially with concrete, there is still a lot of potential for designing recipes in a more ecological way. Approaches to reduce the environmental impact of concrete include the use of industrial and agricultural by-products. This study combines the approaches of replacing cement with granulated blast furnace slag and the use of NaOH-treated rice straw fibers. The research objective comprises the design of an ecologically optimized concrete as well as the question of whether a pretreatment of rice straw fibers with NaOH improves the performance of the designed concrete. The method includes mechanical and physical testing of the of the designed concrete as well as an optical analysis with a scanning electron microscope. The results indicated that treating rice straw with 1% NaOH indicates a better bond between fibers and the surrounding matrix. The tests in which the rice straw was treated with NaOH achieved a higher density, splitting strength, tensile strength and compressive strength. The study contributes an ecologically optimized concrete with granulated blast furnace slag and NaOH-treated rice straw concrete, which shows a great potential as an environmentally friendly, low-cost construction material. In order to use secondary waste from an incineration plant, it is necessary to process or treat it. Valorization of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (MSWIBA) is a popular treatment method. Moreover, there are other possibilities, such as alkaline pre-treatment, which can be used for the rest of the secondary waste from incineration plants, especially hazardous fly ash. The purpose of this study is to show the problem of secondary waste in Poland in relation to the rest of Europe. Due to the physicochemical research of secondary waste, the possibilities of the procedure and its management are indicated. By analyzing the literature and the market, the latest possibilities for improving the physicochemical properties of secondary waste are proposed. Searching for new methods for waste management is essential to the environment. This manuscript presents the problem of the increasing amount of waste, as well as possibilities to close the loop, and minimize the negative impact on the environment. Durability of concrete designed for radiation shielding structures is an important issue in nuclear power plant safety. An investigation of the permeability of concrete containing heavyweight aggregates and water-bearing aggregates was performed with respect to gaseous and liquid media. Mix design was developed using Portland and slag cement, crushed magnetite and serpentine aggregate. The use of slag cement in concrete containing magnetite and serpentine aggregates resulted in the substantial improvement of the compressive strength in comparison with Portland cement concrete. The application of slag cement was found to reduce the chloride ingress, regardless of the special aggregate use. The coefficient of chloride migration was within the range 5 ÷ 8 × 10−12 m2/s and 17 ÷ 25 × 10−12 m2/s for slag cement concrete and Portland cement concrete, respectively. At the same time, the carbonation depth was increased twice for slag cement concrete in comparison to Portland cement concrete. However, the maximum carbonation depth after one year of exposure to 1% CO2 was only 14 mm for slag cement concrete, and 7 mm for reference concrete. The total pore volume evaluated using mercury intrusion porosimetry was influenced by the type of special aggregate used. It was shown that concrete with various contents of magnetite aggregate and slag cement achieved the smallest total pore volume. While serpentine coarse aggregate caused an increase in total pore volume in comparison to concrete with magnetite aggregate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The broader use of cements with a higher content of the main non-clinker components in construction industry is one of the directions leading to the decarbonization in cement production. This contribution analyzes the properties of low-emission cements containing from 44% to 56% of Portland clinker in their composition and indicates the possibilities of wider use in the construction. The obtained results confirmed that following the appropriate technological regimes, low-emission cements can be implemented into the production of concrete exposed to carbonation-induced corrosion (exposure class XC4 according to EN 206), frost-resistant concrete (exposure class XF4 according to EN 206), self-compacting concrete (SCC) and high-performance concrete (HPC). In view of the serious threat of gas accumulation in the coal mine goaf and the limitations of the existing gas sealing materials, the orthogonal experiment was developed to study a new type of foamed concrete for mine gas sealing. Dry density, gas permeability, and compressive strength were studied as the material indicators according to the demands of the gas isolation material in the coal mine goaf, and the experimental results showed that foam content was the most important factor. Meanwhile, the optimum mix was selected according to the influence of foam content as well as the engineering requirement. Then two application modes of this foamed concrete for goaf gas isolation were put forward, after which the convection-diffusion model of gas was built by COMSOL Multiphysics (COMSOL Inc., Stockholm, Sweden) to reveal the mechanism of different application modes using the parameters of the new foamed concrete. Simulation results showed that this foamed concrete used as isolating material for goaf gas could significantly decrease the gas concentration in workface, which can provide a reference for similar engineering. One of the basic criteria for the representativeness of composite material samples is the similarity of the quantitative and qualitative composition of the material in the sample to that of the material it represents. The article presents the results of experimental research concerning the impact of the ratio of the minimum size of cubic concrete samples (lmin) to the maximum size of aggregate grain (Dmax). The content of the basic components of concrete, i.e., coarse aggregate, mortar, sand and cement paste, was analysed. The content of these components in the concrete sample was identified by means of analysis of the sample cross-sectional image, and then, compared with the contents resulting from the concrete mixture proportion. Cases where lmin/Dmax was between 2.38 and 12.5 were analysed. The results of the study indicate a moderate correlation between these two parameters. The largest discrepancies between the component contents of the sample and the controlled concrete were usually recorded at the extreme values of the lmin/Dmax ratio. These discrepancies, depending on the component in question, range from approx. −15 to approx. +15%. Acceptable deviations (≤ ±5%) result in the value of this ratio within the estimated range between approximately 5.0 and approximately 10.0. In existing standards, the use of samples that meet the requirement lmin/Dmax ≥ 3.0 or 3.5 is recommended. In light of the presented test results, this requirement is sufficient for the material properties that are not sensitive to slight variation in concrete composition, i.e., compressive and tensile strength. The presented results are useful in the case of sample size selection for the study of concrete properties which are most sensitive to concrete composition changes. The article presents the recipe for ultra-lightweight cement slurry for wellbore sealing. In ordinary lightweight cement slurries, the addition of microspheres and a large amount of water are used to maintain rheological parameters. This is a problem because the light particles of microspheres segregate. The cement sheath from such a cement slurry has an anisotropic microstructure and does not stabilize the casing column. In the new ultra-light cement slurry, 60% aluminosilicate microspheres and a large amount of water were used. The ultra-light weight slurry has a density below 1.2 g/cm3. This cement slurry does not segregates and in the sedimentation stability test has the same density at all measuring points. The cement slurry, despite the larger amount of water, has the same filtration as the control sample. The technological parameters of the slurry are adapted to the borehole conditions. Cement slurry is a ready-made application to seal a borehole with poor wellbore stability under conditions of 40 °C and 10 MPa pressure. The cement sheath structure in the wellbore after binding is homogeneous. The use of such slurry allows to reduce the risk of wall damage in wellbores of poor stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The intersection of cracks has an important role in the key technology of hydraulic fracturing for enhancing the recovery of tight hydrocarbon reservoirs. On the basis of digital image correlation technology, three-point bending tests of concrete beams with an edge crack and a central preset crack were conducted to investigate the propagation of cracks after intersection in concretes. Concrete beams with cracks of different positions, lengths, and approach angles were tested, and results were analyzed. In conclusion, the crack positions, crack lengths, and approach angles significantly influence the crack propagation in naturally cracked concrete. A large distance between the crack tip and central point at the preset transverse crack and crack length indicate a high possibility of the edge crack vertically crossing the preset crack. In particular, the crack restarts from the preset crack tip after intersection when the distance between two cracks is smaller than 30 mm and when the preset crack length is smaller than 40 mm. A large approach angle corresponds to a large carrying capacity of the beam and a high possibility of the crack propagating perpendicularly. An improved criterion of restart cracking after interaction is proposed, and the restart points of all tested beams are predicted and compared with the experimental results. As an important infrastructure project, the concrete gravity dam plays an extremely important role in hydropower generation, irrigation, flood control, and other aspects. Seepage is an important factor affecting the stability of concrete gravity dams. Seepage safety assessment is of great significance to the safe operation of the dams. However, the existing seepage safety assessment models are not dynamic, and the correlation among indicators is often neglected and the overall seepage safety of the concrete gravity dams has not been considered. To solve these problems, this research proposes a dynamic matter-element extension (D-MEE) model. First, the D-MEE model is established through adroit integration of the matter-element extension (MEE) model and functional data analysis (FDA). Second, a dynamic criteria importance through the intercriteria correlation (D-CRITIC) method that can effectively consider the correlation among indicators is proposed to determine the weights. Third, the influence of different dam blocks on the overall seepage safety status is considered by constructing a spatial weight matrix. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the concrete gravity dam X in southwest China.
