A large input delay, parametric uncertainties, matched disturbances and mismatched disturbances exist extensively in variable air volume air-conditioning systems, which can deteriorate the control performance of the room temperature and even destabilize the system. To address this problem, an adaptive-gain command filter control framework for the room temperature of variable air volume air-conditioning systems is exploited. Through skillfully designing an auxiliary system, both the filtered error and the input delay can be compensated concurrently, which can attenuate the effect of the filtered error and the input delay on the control performance of the room temperature. Then, a smooth nonlinear term with an adjusted gain is introduced into the control framework to compensate for parametric uncertainties, matched disturbances and mismatched disturbances, which relieves the conservatism of the controller gain selection. With the help of the Lyapunov theory, both the boundedness of all the system signals and the asymptotic tracking performance for the room temperature can be assured with the presented controller. Even though the streamer process can be identified in nanoseconds and microseconds through experimental measurements, the breakdown time of air discharge is still unknown. The instability of electrons is suspected to be an attachment-instability phenomenon of the channel conductivity. We investigated breakdown time across milliseconds to better understand how the oxygen excitations of the 200–400 nm range influence a high-conductivity channel even with a weaker applied voltage. Experiments were performed with positive impulse voltages ranging from +42 to +75 kV in the step of +6 kV at a 3 cm gap between needle-to-plane electrodes in a horizontal configuration. A spectrometer with an integration time of 70 ms was used to capture the spectra during voltage discharge. The shortest breakdown time was found at +60 kV with 77 ns compared to +66, +72, and +75 kV. We conclude that the shorter breakdown time at +60 kV is primarily due to the oxygen-excited state in O IV at 262.999 nm. This state helps maintain electron flow by preventing electron loss, with a decay time of 2.5 µs, while releasing Joule heat at a temperature of 26,003 K, which optimizes conductivity. This process occurs before the recombination of the O I line at 777.417 nm, which has a significantly shorter decay time of 27 ns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents modeling results and a comprehensive analysis of evaporative cooling systems designed for electric motors using the refrigerants R744 (trans-critical), R134a, R600a, and R290. This study aims to determine the most suitable refrigerant for use in a cooling system, optimize the system design, and calculate the maximum achievable motor power while adhering to specified temperature constraints. The modeling was validated by an experimental setup, which had the cooling system's configuration featuring three circuits for motor housing, stator, and rotor cooling, respectively. The modeling of an evaporative system was used to present the cooling efficiency under varying loads and external temperature conditions. Mathematical modeling encompasses complex algorithms to simulate heat transfer phenomena, accounting for fluid dynamics and refrigeration cycle dynamics. The analyses revealed trends in winding temperature, rotor temperature, air temperature inside the motor, heat transfer coefficient, coefficient of performance (COP), and motor power across different operating conditions while using different cooling refrigerants. The maximal heat transfer coefficients were calculated for all the refrigerants for winding temperatures in the range from 32 to 82 °C, while air temperature and rotor temperatures were between 42 and 105 °C and 76 and 185 °C, respectively. Lowering the evaporation temperature of the coolant to −35 °C resulted in a significant decrease in the winding temperature to 15 °C, air temperature to 38 °C, and maximum rotor temperature to 118 °C at a motor power of 90 kW. Refrigerant R744 emerged as a promising option, offering high heat transfer coefficients and achieving high motor power within temperature limits. This article proposes new values and geospatial models of winter and summer external design temperatures for designing buildings' heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. The climatic design parameters applicable in Poland for the sizing of these installations are approximately 50 years old and do not correspond to Poland's current climate. New values of climatic design parameters were determined following the methods described in European standards and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Handbook of Fundamentals. The determined climatic design parameters, particularly the winter and summer external design temperatures, were compared with those currently in force by law in Poland. The external air design dry-bulb temperatures presented in the article were developed based on meteorological and climatic data from the years 1991–2020 from two data sources: synoptic data from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMWM) in Poland and reanalysis models of the ERA5 database of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). According to ASHRAE, with 99.6% and 0.4% frequency of occurrence, external air design dry-bulb temperatures for winter and summer were used to develop mathematical geospatial models of external design temperatures for the Central Europe area with Poland's territory in the centre part. Scattered data from 667 meteorological stations were interpolated to 40,000 uniform mesh points using a biharmonic spline interpolation method to develop these models. Linear regression and ANOVA analysis for the ERA5-generated data from 900 checkpoint data items were used to estimate the correctness of these models. Verified models were used to calculate winter and summer external design temperature isolines presented together with colour space representation on Mercator projected maps of Central Europe. Heating in the winter is one of the human activities that consumes the most energy, thereby affecting the environment and leaving a carbon footprint. An increase in heating efficiency results in a reduction in the energy demand of the process and environmental protection. This contribution aimed to determine and experimentally verify the possibility of obtaining and effectively using the heat from the chimney of a gas boiler generated during the heating of a family house. For this purpose, we used a simple heat exchanger and measured the relevant temperatures on an exchange unit for almost five months during the heating season. The air temperatures measured at the inlet and outlet of the exchanger unit together with the outside temperatures were statistically analyzed to determine the effect of using the exchanger unit to obtain additional heat that could be used for other purposes. In addition, this study investigated whether there was a statistically significant difference in the temperature of the air entering the heating system with different outdoor temperature values. Using the mass of a building to store or dissipate heat can reduce the demand on auxiliary heating and/or cooling systems. There is a scarcity of full-scale and full-year studies in the literature, which this study seeks to address, as it is critical to assess the performance of real phase change material (PCM) composites throughout all seasons. This study involved the design and manufacture of precast cladding sandwich panels with a PCM–concrete inner leaf used in three full-scale huts which were instrumented to record thermal data over 18 months. Analysis of these data showed that when the internal air temperature fluctuated through the phase change temperature, the PCM–concrete composite was effective at reducing the internal air temperatures by up to 16% if overnight ventilation was provided and 12% without overnight ventilation in a temperate climate. Furthermore, the PCM located deeper than 60 mm from the internal surface of the wall is ineffective at reducing internal air temperatures. The data also highlighted that the thermal conditions required to activate the PCM only occurred during 30% of the year. The thermal data were used to validate a simulation model which can be used to derive bespoke solutions for this form of technology in real scenarios in any geographical location. Despite efforts to mitigate climate change, annual greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, which may lead to the global warming of our planet. Buildings' thermal energy needs are inherently linked to climate conditions. Consequently, it is crucial to evaluate how climate change affects these energy demands. Despite extensive analysis, a comprehensive assessment involving a diverse range of building types has not been consistently conducted. The primary objective of this research is to perform a coherent evaluation of the influence of climate changes, construction element properties, and the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system type of control on the energy requirements of six buildings (residential, services, and commercial). The buildings are considered to be located in a temperate Mediterranean climate. Our focus is on the year 2070, considering three distinct climatic scenarios: (i) maintaining the current climate without further changes, (ii) moderate climate changes, and (iii) extreme climate changes. The buildings are distributed across three different locations, each characterized by unique climatic conditions. Buildings' envelope features a traditional External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) serves as thermal insulation material. Two critical design factors are explored: EPS thickness ranging from 0 (no insulation) to 12 cm; and horizontal external fixed shading elements varying lengths from 0 (absence) to 150 cm. Six alternative setpoint ranges are assessed for the HVAC system control: three based on the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and three based on indoor air temperature (Tair). Results were obtained with a validated in-home software tool. They show that, even under extreme climate conditions, the application of thermal insulation remains energetically favorable; however, its relative importance diminishes as climate severity increases. Then, proper insulation design remains important for energy efficiency. The use of external shading elements for glazing (e.g., overhangs, louvers) proves beneficial in specific cases. As climate changes intensify, the significance of shading elements grows. Thus, strategic placement and design are necessary for good results. The HVAC system's energy consumption depends on the level of thermal comfort requirements, on the climate characteristics, and on the building's type of use. As climate change severity intensifies, energy demands for cooling increase, whereas energy needs for heating decrease. With half-cut photovoltaic (PV) modules being the dominant technology on the market, there is an increasing necessity for accurate modeling of this module type. Circuit simulators such as Simulink are widely used to study different topics regarding photovoltaics, often employing a solar cell block available from the Simcape library. The purpose of this work is to validate this model against measurements for a partially shaded half-cut PV module. Diverse shading scenarios are created by varying the number of shaded substrings, the number of shaded solar cells in the substring, and the shading level. For every shading scenario, the PV module's I-V curve is measured, along with in-plane irradiance, air temperature, and module temperature. A comprehensive evaluation of simulation accuracy is presented. The results confirm a high accuracy of the model with mean nRMSE values of 2.2% for I-V curves and 2.8% when P-V curves are considered. It is found that the simulation errors tend to increase when increasing the number of shaded substrings. At the same time, no obvious dependency of simulation accuracy on the shading level or the number of shaded solar cells in the substring is found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The combined heating method of seat heating and air conditioning (A/C) was applied in the passenger compartment under different experiment conditions, using thermocouples to continuously measure the wall surfaces and air temperatures in the passenger compartment and the passengers' skin temperatures of 17 segments. Meanwhile, a subjective evaluation questionnaire survey was conducted using a nine-point evaluation scale on the local and overall thermal sensation and thermal comfort of the passengers, and the data from the questionnaire were analyzed with the ANOVA method. The results showed that the use of the heating pad directly affected the changes in human skin temperature, which in turn affected the local and overall thermal sensation and thermal comfort. For the two thermally stimulated segments of the back and under the thighs, the skin temperature of the back was higher than that of the thighs. Using the heating pad resulted in a rapid increase in the mean skin temperature in the early period of the experiment. Thermal sensation of the back and under-thighs shifted rapidly towards the hot zone in the first 10 min, and then settled around +3, with even more significant differences between the groups. Thermal sensations in non-thermally stimulated segments changed in relation to their position on the heating pad, with slower changes in those at the "distal" end of the body, the head and the feet. Continued use of the heating pads at lower ambient temperatures maintained overall thermal comfort at a neutral level in the range of 0–1, whereas at higher ambient temperatures there was a gradual deterioration of local and overall thermal comfort. This research was carried out to compare selected forecasting methods, such as the following: Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Classification and Regression Trees (CARTs), Chi-squared Automatic Interaction Detector (CHAID), Fuzzy Logic Toolbox (FUZZY), Multivariant Adaptive Regression Splines (MARSs), Regression Trees (RTs), Rough Set Theory (RST), and Support Regression Trees (SRTs), in the context of determining the temperature of brine from vertical ground heat exchangers used by a heat pump heating system. The subject of the analysis was a public building located in Poland, in a temperate continental climate zone. The results of this study indicate that the models based on Rough Set Theory (RST) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) achieved the highest accuracy in predicting brine temperature, with the choice of the preferred method depending on the input variables used for modeling. Using three independent variables (mean outdoor air temperature, month of the heating season, mean solar irradiance), Rough Set Theory (RST) was one of the best models, for which the evaluation rates were as follows: CV RMSE 21.6%, MAE 0.3 °C, MAPE 14.3%, MBE 3.1%, and R2 0.96. By including an additional variable (brine flow rate), Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) achieved the most accurate predictions. Many studies have sought to overcome the two main limitations of the average method of ISO 9869-1—its long test duration and low accuracy. These studies reported that the reliability of the results is dependent on the temperature differences. This consensus was based on the results of studies that measured a few cases with specific temperature differences, and the convergence criteria utilized for the representative thermal transmittance (U-value) were rarely examined. This study analyzed the influence of the average temperature difference and test duration on the convergence characteristics and accuracy of U-value estimation using the average method. Data from a north-facing exterior wall with a theoretical U-value of 0.145 W/m2·K were measured between June 2022 and May 2023. The influences of different measurement conditions were analyzed for cases divided based on four measurement periods and 11 average air temperature differences. The findings show that an accurate U-value can be obtained from 7 days' worth of measurement data with an average temperature difference of 10 °C or higher and that the improvement in accuracy is minimal under stricter conditions. To achieve a convergence probability of over 90% for temperature differences of 10 °C or greater, the second and third criteria required measurement periods of 7 and 15 days respectively. There have been fruitful publications on thermal comfort of urban residential buildings in China. However, there is a lack of reviews on this topic to perform a comprehensive analysis and find opportunities to meet occupants' thermal comfort needs while improving building energy efficiencies. This paper addresses this issue by presenting a systematic review on the advancements in research on thermal comfort in urban residential buildings in China. Firstly, two common thermal comfort research approaches, i.e., field studies and laboratory studies, are discussed. Secondly, eleven main thermal comfort evaluation indicators are summarized. Finally, this paper analyzes the thermal comfort survey data from different researchers, discusses the impacts of adaptive behaviors on human thermal comfort, and provides recommendations for future research on urban residential thermal comfort. It was found that people have higher and higher requirements for their indoor thermal environment as time goes by, especially in the winter; the thermoneutral temperature is higher in warmer climate regions in the summer but lower in the winter than in colder climate regions; the thermoneutral temperature tends to increase with the indoor air temperature due to an adaptation to the indoor thermal environment. The outcomes of this paper provide valuable information on thermal comfort behaviors of urban residents in different climate zones in China, which can serve as a resource for the academic community conducting future research on thermal comfort and assist policymakers in enhancing building energy efficiencies without compromising the occupants' comfort. In order to explore the law of gas–solid countercurrent cooling heat transfer in a vertical sinter cooling furnace at a high temperature, based on the Euler model and the local non-thermodynamic equilibrium theory, an exergy efficiency model was built to evaluate the heat transfer process in the vertical sinter cooling furnace with different parameter changes. It was found that the inlet temperature of cooling air and sinter inlet temperature are the main factors affecting the temperature field and gas–solid heat transfer characteristics in the furnace. Under the conditions of each parameter, the cooling air temperature presents a radial "M" shape distribution. The axial cooling section is the most intense area of gas–solid heat transfer, and this part has the best heat transfer effect. When the inlet temperature of cooling air and the inlet temperature of sinter increase, the outlet temperature of sinter and the outlet temperature of cooling air increase. When the sinter equivalent diameter increases, the cooling air outlet temperature decreases gradually, while the sinter outlet temperature increases gradually. When the diameter and height of the cooling section increase, respectively, the outlet temperature of the sinter decreases and the outlet temperature of the cooling air increases. This paper experimentally analyses an indoor environment assessment of a large group of respondents regarding their subjective perception of overall comfort, indoor air quality and humidity. The questionnaire survey was applied as a testing method together with measurements of the physical parameters conducted with a microclimate meter. Two types of environment were analysed: educational rooms and the climate chamber. The comparative analysis of the sensations experienced within them indicates that they generate quite similar responses; however, some discrepancies have been identified. The overall comfort of the climate chamber was typically assessed as being higher than that of the educational rooms at the same air temperature. The most favourable air temperature in the climate chamber was ca. 20.7 °C, while in the educational rooms it was ca. 22.3 °C. The most preferable conditions in the climate chamber occurred at a thermal sensation vote of −0.4 ("pleasantly slightly cool"), while in the educational rooms it occurred at +0.2 ("neutral/pleasantly slightly warm"). Quite strong correlations between overall comfort and indoor air quality as well as between humidity assessment and humidity preference votes were observed, which did not seem to depend on the type of environment.
