Climate change is an important issue that affects energy consumption, causes health problems, such as heat stroke, and requires urgent countermeasures. Serious health problems, including cardiac arrest, often occur in winter in traditional residences in Japan. Cooling-heating energy is required to maintain a healthy thermal environment. Although energy efficiency standards for buildings have been introduced worldwide to reduce energy consumption and various passive energy-saving methods are being investigated, traditional residences still face difficulties in conducting renovations because of various restrictions, such as the conservation of historical or aesthetic values. In this study, these issues and their appropriate countermeasures were investigated for a traditional townhouse in Kyoto, Japan, "Kyo-machiya" (including its new form "Heisei-no-Kyo-machiya"). The potential of reducing heating and cooling loads was examined by conducting numerical analysis considering residents' lifestyles. Field surveys of the indoor environment were conducted in both summer and winter. It was revealed that by optimizing the times and positions of opening and closing the windows and indoor partitions, the indoor air flow could be adjusted from both thermal comfort (cooling in summer) and discomfort (cold drafts in winter) perspectives, leading to improving the indoor environment without using energy. This paper suggests a heat recovery concept that is based on preheating/precooling the cold/hot fresh outside air by means of the relatively hot/cold exhaust air in winter/summer weather conditions. To investigate the feasibility of such a concept, an experimental setup is established to simulate conditions similar to an All-Air HVAC system. The prototype consists of a 6.7-m3 air-conditioned chamber by means of a split unit of 5.3-kW capacity. The heat recovery module consists of a duct system that is used to reroute the exhaust air from a conditioned chamber to flow through the fin side of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger of crossflow type. At the same time, outside, fresh air is flowing through the tube side of the fin-and-tube heat exchanger. A parametric study is performed to assess the amount of heat that can be recovered by varying the mass flow rates on both the duct and heat exchanger sides. The results show that up to 200 W of power can be saved for an exhaust flow rate of 0.1 kg/s and a fresh, outdoor air flow rate of 0.05 kg/s. Environmentally speaking, this leads to a reduction in production of about 1 tons of CO2 per year when the system operates 24 h/day. From an economic point of view, the system is able to return its price after 1.5 years when it is used 24 h per day during hot days at 196-W thermal recovery, whereas it requires at least 6.3 years when it is used during cold days at a 60-W thermal recovery rate, which, in both cases, represents a duration less than the lifespan of an air conditioner. High-temperature particle receivers are being developed to achieve temperatures in excess of 700 °C for advanced power cycles and solar thermochemical processes. This paper describes designs and features of a falling particle receiver system that has been evaluated and tested at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility at Sandia National Laboratories. These advanced designs are intended to reduce heat losses and increase the thermal efficiency. Novel features include aperture covers, active air flow, particle flow obstructions, and optimized receiver shapes that minimize advective heat losses, increase particle curtain opacity and uniformity, and reduce cavity wall temperatures. Control systems are implemented in recent on-sun tests to maintain a desired particle outlet temperature using an automated closed-loop proportional–integral–derivative controller. These tests demonstrate the ability to achieve and maintain particle outlet temperatures approaching 800 °C with efficiencies between 60 and 90%, depending on incident power, mass flow, and environmental conditions. In this study, confluent jets ventilation (CJV) supply devices with three different nozzle arrays (1 × 19, 2 × 19, 3 × 19) were investigated both numerically and experimentally at two different airflow and supply air temperature set-ups. The performance of the CJV supply devices was investigated concerning thermal comfort, indoor air quality (IAQ), and heat removal effectiveness in a conference room environment. A comparison between the experimental and numerical results showed that the   ϑ 2 ¯ − f model had the best agreement out of the investigated turbulence models. The numerical results showed that the size of the array had a great impact both on near-field development and on the conditions in the occupied zone. A larger array with multiple rows and a lower momentum conserved the inlet temperature and the mean age of the air better than a single-row array with a higher momentum. A larger array with multiple rows had a higher IAQ and a greater heat removal effectiveness in the occupied zone because the larger array conserved the mean age of air better and the buoyancy driven flow was slightly better at removing the heat. Because of the lower inlet velocities, they also had lower velocities at ankle level, which decreased the risk of draft and thermal discomfort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of a low-cost solar collector to pre-heat ventilation air in commercial broiler buildings on supplemental heating demand and air quality during the cold season. Six black fabric-based solar collectors of 36 m2 each were installed on the south-facing rooftop of a broiler house. The solar collectors provided fresh warm air into the house during the ON cycle of minimum ventilation and during the OFF cycle of minimum ventilation when the temperature under the collectors met certain criteria. The daily cumulative duration of solar collectors in operation averaged 125 and 133 min during the first two or four weeks of brooding in the fall and winter flocks, respectively. When in operation, the solar collectors were able to raise up to 20 K above the ambient temperature, reducing fuel usage by 7% in the fall and winter flocks. The greatest challenge of solar collector utilization was the collectors providing less than half of ventilation air during daytime due to not enclosing the fresh air inlets. The limited airflow capacity and limited activation of the solar collectors due to the existing minimum ventilation scheme is another reason for low heating fuel savings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents the sweeping gas membrane distillation realised by using the capillary module (length 1.1 m and area 0.1 m2) without housing (module shell). During the tests, the feed was flowing inside the hydrophobic polypropylene membranes. The studies were performed for two variants of process: with pre-heating (313–330 K) and without heating of the feed (brines). Under low gas flow (0.005 m/s) the evaporation performance varied in the range of 0.15–0.25 L/m2h, depending on the relative humidity (42–63%) and the air temperature (293–300 K). The application of feed pre-heating to 330 K led to an increase in the evaporation performance to 2.4 L/m2h. The permeate flux increased by 60% when the air flow velocities between the capillaries increased to 1.8–2.5 m/s. Increasing the feed flow rate from 0.1 to 0.59 m/s led to increase the permeate flux about 20% for feed temperature 293–310 K, and over 55% for feed temperature higher than 323 K. A variable refrigerant flow integrated stratum ventilation (VRF-SV) system was proposed as an energy efficient substitute for conventional central cooling systems for buildings. The novel system provided conditioned air to enclosed spaces with high indoor air quality and thermal comfort. This study investigated the effects of different types of ASTDs on the performance of the VRF-SV hybrid system. The performance was experimentally evaluated with five air terminal types, including bar grille, double deflection grille, jet slot, perforated and drum louver diffusers. The evaluation was carried out using standard indices: temperature and velocity distribution, airflow pattern, effective draft temperature (EDT), air distribution performance index (ADPI), thermal sensation vote and comfort feedback survey. The results indicated that the ASTD type had a significant impact on airflow pattern. Furthermore, the bar grille diffuser provided the occupants with greater thermal comfort and acceptable indoor environment. Almost all the EDT values determined in the breathing zone in the case with bar grille diffuser found under the satisfactory range, i.e., −1.2 < K < 1.2. Based on these values, the ADPI for bar grille diffuser was calculated as 92.8%. Thus, the bar grille diffuser is recommended to be installed with the VRF-SV hybrid system in buildings. This study conducted a radial flow experiment to investigate the existence of non-Darcy flow and calculate the non-Darcy "inertia" coefficient; the experiment was performed on seven cylindrical perforated artificial porous media samples. Two hundred thirty-one runs were performed, and the pressure drop was reported. The non-Darcy coefficient β was calculated and compared with available in the literature. The results showed that the non-Darcy coefficient decreased nonlinearly and converged on a value within a specific range as the permeability increased. Nonetheless, it was found that the non-Darcy flow exists even in the very low flow rate deployed in this study. In addition, it has been found that the non-Darcy effect is not due to turbulence but also the inertial effect. The existence of a non-Darcy flow was confirmed for all the investigated samples. In order to solve the problem of uneven air inlet flow in the guide channel of autoclave, three optimization schemes for the guide plate were proposed. The flow field in the guide channels of autoclave was simulated and analyzed by the realizable k-epsilon turbulence model and dynamic boundary method. The results show that the three optimization schemes have a certain effect on solving the problem of uneven air inlet flow in each guide channel, but some of them also have some negative effects. The integration of the three optimization schemes effectively increases the total air inlet flow of the guide channels; the increase ratio reaches 4.15%, improves the flow-field characteristics at the outlet of the guide channels and greatly reduces the difference in the air inlet flow in the left and right guide channels; the difference ratio drops from 62.61% to 5.37%. The nozzle which is applied in industrial pneumatic pulsators is studied. It is a part of the system for unclogging the drains and outlets of silos and hoppers for loose materials. The nozzle is required to achieve the lowest level of energy losses while directing the airflow, which impacts the loose material bed. The energy rate transferred into the bed depends on the temperature and pressure differences between the inlet and outlet of the nozzle. In this study, the available energy is determined assuming compressible and transient airflow through the nozzle, which is a part of the industrial pneumatic pulsator. Numerical simulations are performed using the OpenFOAM CFD toolbox. Energy analysis is carried out by using Reynolds Transport Theorem for specific energy for the variable temperature inside the silo on the basis of CFD results. In fact, the air parameters at the outlet of the nozzle are the ones inside the silo. The study showed that the design of the nozzle is not very sufficient from an energetic point of view. With increasing urbanization, urban air pollutants are becoming more and more relevant to human health. Here, combined with meteorological observation data, a numerical simulation of typical urban blocks in Shanghai was carried out to understand the spread of air pollutants caused by road traffic sources (ground–level and viaduct–level). Firstly, we analyzed the wind environment characteristics. Then, we quantitatively analyzed the pollutant distribution profiles and the contributions of two pollutant sources (PSV). Finally, we analyzed seven urban morphological parameters based on ventilation efficiency indices. Results revealed the following. (1) Ventilation patterns within the architectural complex are determined by local geometry; (2) Pollutants released at ground level were dominant when the Z–plane < 8 m high, and pollutants released from the viaduct source were 0.8–6.1% higher when the Z–plane ≥ 8 m high; (3) From ground level to a height of 60 m, the spatially–averaged normalized concentration (C*) tended to decrease gradually with distance from the source. C* increased irregularly with an increase in distance between 60 m and 86 m. Above 86 m, C* tended to increase linearly; (4) Vertical profiles of C* around buildings were building–specific, and their rate of change was inconsistent with height increases. In general, the correlations between C* and VRw, and between C* and KEturb were larger on the windward side of PSV upstream buildings than on the leeward side. Buildings downstream of the PSV showed the opposite situation; (5) At pedestrian level, the seven urban morphological parameters had no significant correlation with VRw, Cir*, and Czs*. A pumped two-phase thermosyphon loop is broadly utilized to intensify the cooling duties of electronic chipsets/systems and the effectiveness for harvesting thermal energy. The configuration of a condenser not only affects the heat transfer in the condenser, but also has an effect on the saturation pressures during the boiling and condensation processes to alter the hydrothermal performance of a pumped thermosyphon loop. The influence of the condenser configuration on the hydrothermal performance of a pumped thermosyphon loop is rarely studied. The present study comparatively examined the thermal performances of two pumped thermosyphon loops with a conventional tube-fin condenser and the expansion-tank condenser. The thermodynamic cycles in pressure-temperature and pressure-enthalpy diagrams, Nusselt numbers of evaporator and condenser, thermal resistances and various performance indexes evaluated at constant pumping powers at the controlled through-flow Reynolds numbers, boiling numbers and condenser thermal resistances were measured. At the similar thermal loads, flow rates, and fluid entry temperatures of condenser, the operating pressure of the thermosyphon loop with expansion tank condenser was considerably reduced from that with tube fin condenser, leading to the lower saturation temperature for reducing the thermal resistance and the lesser pressure drop across the loop with a noticeable hydrothermal performance improvement. At the parametric conditions tested, the ratio of dimensionless overall thermal resistances between the loops with expansion tank condenser and tube fin condenser fell in the range of 0.81–0.99. When the loop performance was compared at a constant cooling airflow rate without considering the more pumping power consumption for the loop with tube fin condenser, the ranges of thermal resistance for the loops with expansion tank condenser and tube fin condenser were 0.13–0.21 (KW−1) and 0.15–0.23 (KW−1). The merit indices evaluating the comparative hydrothermal performances of evaporator, condenser and loop between the two looped thermosyphons highlighted the significance of condenser design and affirmed the performance improvement by changing tube fin condenser into expansion tank condenser. The empirical correlations of evaporator Nusselt number, condenser Nusselt number, and overall thermal resistance using Reynolds number, boiling number, and condenser thermal resistance as the controlling parameters were generated for relevant applications. This paper focuses on a detailed numerical investigation combined with experimental research for a non-premixed swirl combustor, which aims to analyze the effects of the blade angle of the outer swirler and equivalence ratio on flow and combustion characteristics. In the experiment, the temperature in the furnace was obtained with a thermocouple, while a realizable k-ε turbulence model and two-step reaction mechanism of methane and air are used in the numerical method. The calculation results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The results reveal that the air flow rate through the swirler accounts for a small amount of the total air due to the influence of the draft fan, and there is no central recirculation zone (CRZ) despite the presence of the swirler. It was also found that NO emissions gradually decrease as the blade angle of the outer swirler increases. It was also indicated that the average temperature is 100 K higher than the general combustor with a 58° blade angle in the furnace by increasing the equivalent ratio of the tertiary air area, and the NO emissions reduced by approximately 25%. Multi-tube multi-fin heat exchangers are extensively used in various industries. In the current work, detailed experimental investigations were carried out to establish the flow/heat transfer characteristics in three distinct heat exchanger geometries. A novel perforated plain fin design was developed, and its performance was evaluated against standard plain and louvred fins designs. Experimental setups were designed, and the tests were carefully carried out which enabled quantification of the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics. In the experiments the average velocity of air was varied in the range of 0.7 m/s to 4 m/s corresponding to Reynolds numbers of 600 to 2650. The water side flow rates in the tubes were kept at 0.12, 0.18, 0.24, 0.3, and 0.36 m3/h corresponding to Reynolds numbers between 6000 and 30,000. It was found that the louvred fins produced the highest heat transfer rate due to the availability of higher surface area, but it also produced the highest pressure drops. Conversely, while the new perforated design produced a slightly higher pressure drop than the plain fin design, it gave a higher value of heat transfer rate than the plain fin especially at the lower liquid flow rates. Specifically, the louvred fin gave consistently high pressure drops, up to 3 to 4 times more than the plain and perforated models at 4 m/s air flow, however, the heat transfer enhancement was only about 11% and 13% over the perforated and plain fin models, respectively. The mean heat transfer rate and pressure drops were used to calculate the Colburn and Fanning friction factors. Two novel semiempirical relationships were derived for the heat exchanger's Fanning and Colburn factors as functions of the non-dimensional fin surface area and the Reynolds number. In order to deepen the understanding of rotating effects on internal cooling, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of 2-pass rotating rectangular smooth/ribbed channels are investigated by Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulation. Three rotating numbers (Ro = 0.10, 0.25, and 0.40) are simulated, and the maximum buoyancy parameter (Bo) reaches 5.0. The results show that the rotating buoyancy has significant effects on the flow and heat transfer under high Bo conditions. When Bo > 1.0, rotating buoyancy inducts flow separation near the leading edge (LE) in the first passage, while the air flow in the second passage shows a double-peak profile. With increased Bo, the heat transfer in the first passage is greatly increased, and the maximum growth rate occurs at Bo = 0.6~1.0. However, the heat transfer in the second passage has no obvious changes due to a strong turn effect. In the ribbed channel, rotating effects are much weaker than those in the smooth channel. This paper presents a mathematical model of the heat and mass transfer processes for a rotary-spray honey dehydrator with a heat pump and a closed air circuit. An analytical calculation model, based on the energy balance equations of the dehydrator and heat pump, was used to model the transient dehydration process of honey in a dehydrator. The presented article includes a different approach to modelling both the dryer and the heat pump assisting the drying process. The novel quality of this study lies in the use of original equations to determine the heat and mass transfer coefficients between honey and air and using an actual model of a cooling unit to model the honey dehydration process. The experimentally verified calculation algorithm enables an analysis of the effects of air flow rate, mixer rotation speed, and cooling unit power on the efficiency of the drying process. The dehydrator calculation model was used to minimize the drying time by selecting the optimal evaporative temperature values of the cooling unit. For fixed mixer speed and air flow rates, optimal values of evaporation temperatures allow for 8–13% reduction in honey drying time and an increase in the specific moisture extraction rate (SMER) by 4–32%. The paper discusses two mathematical models for the air flow through a plate heat exchanger with parallel plates. The first exhausts the used air and then supplies the fresh air. The second exhausts the used air above the plate and simultaneously supplies fresh air under it (counter-flow exchanger). In both cases, the exhaust air heat is used to heat the supply air. The purpose of the research is to verify which exchanger uses the exhaust air heat more efficiently. The method of the Trefftz function was used to determine approximate solutions of the analysed problems. The results obtained for 1.2 mm thick steel, aluminium, and copper plates and for external winter, summer, and spring–autumn temperatures are discussed. The results indicate that steel is the best material for a plate heat exchanger, and the counter-flow exchanger is more efficient of the two. Thanks to the use of thin steel plates and the reduction of the air exchange time to a few minutes, cheap and efficient counter-flow exchangers can be obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to achieve uniform and effective impingement cooling, a swirling jet with a swirling angle of 45° (SIJ 45°) is put forward in this paper. Namely, there are four 45° spiral grooves equipped on the inner wall of the circular hole. The difference in the flow field and heat transfer characteristics between the conventional impinging jet (CIJ) and SIJ 45 ° is compared and analyzed. The spiral channels can increase the heat transfer rate and cooling uniformity because of the action of superimposed airflow. In addition, the thread nozzle brings lower pressure loss, which can reduce the airflow friction while effectively ensuring high heat transfer in the center area of the jet. An experimental system is built to investigate the heat transfer and flow characteristics of the impingement surface. Smoke flow visualization technology is used to explore the complex flow field of the CIJ and SIJ 45 ° , and the heat transfer rate of the target surface is analyzed based on thermocouple data. When 6000 ≤ R e ≤ 30,000 , and 1 ≤ h / d j ≤ 8 , the averaged Nusselt number (Nu) correlation for SIJ 45° is established, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. In this paper, the uneven air stream distribution problem of individual cyclones is studied in the multi-cyclones of intake air filters in special vehicles' engines. This problem increases in multi-cyclones, in which several dozen cyclones have a common dust trap from which the collected dust is continuously removed by ejection suction. The aim of this study is the recognition of the theoretical and experimental possibility of reducing the streams' unevenness, which should result in an efficiency increase in multi-cyclone separation. The methods that led to obtaining a relative stream uniformity from the suction of individual cyclones was analyzed. The method for creating equal pressure drops between the suction streams in the channels was used to achieve this goal. For this purpose, the internal structure of the multi-cyclone settler was changed. The multi-cyclone settling tank space was divided by vertical partitions into independent segments. The settling tank segment was then divided with horizontal shelves into suction channels of different heights, which were assigned a specific number of individual cyclones. The suction channels' height was theoretically selected in terms of the equal resistance to air stream flow through the channels. For this purpose, the multi-cyclone dust settler segment model was developed. The theoretically determined suction channel's height was verified by performing experimental flow tests in four (A, B, C, D) dust settler variants. Suction streams of satisfactory uniformity from the cyclones of the variant D settling tank were obtained at a level of 5%. In the next stage, experimental tests of the segment cyclones were carried out with dust before and after the division into suction channels of variant D for the settling tank. A significant increase was achieved from 93.73% to 96.08% in the cyclones' separation efficiency, which were located as far away from the suction stub as possible and led to a reduction in the non-uniformity of cyclone efficiency in the segment. Given the substantial energy use for space cooling in buildings, integrating energy-efficient and sustainable cooling systems into buildings has become increasingly more important. Even though the cooling potential of a near-surface earth-to-air heat exchanger (EAHE) with grass cover was demonstrated in previous studies, the energy savings and environmental benefits resulting from using the EAHE have not yet been quantified. Therefore, in this study, we quantify the energy savings resulting from using a near-surface earth-to-air heat exchanger (EAHE) with grass-covered ground as a precooling unit in hot desert climates. The outlet air conditions of the EAHE during 9 months of the year (March to November), where space cooling is required, are predicted using a 3D transient CFD model, which is validated against field measurements. The EAHE is fabricated from a 1 mm thick aluminum tube with a diameter of 0.15 m and a length of 21.5 m, buried 0.4 m deep. The results showed that the EAHE can cool ambient air by up to 8.5 °C at an air flow rate of 607 m3/h, corresponding to a cooling capacity of 1700 W and a COP of 17. The daily average cooling capacity of the EAHE is about 560 W for an average operation period of 15.1 h per day. When used as a precooling unit for conventional cooling systems, the highest estimated monthly energy savings is 115 kWh, and the estimated annual savings is 741 kWh. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fluidized particle-in-tube solar receiver concept is promoted as an attractive solution for heating particles at high temperature in the context of the next generation of solar power tower. Similar to most existing central solar receivers, the irradiated part of the system, the absorber, is composed of tubes in which circulate the fluidized particles. In this concept, the bottom tip of the tubes is immersed in a fluidized bed generated in a vessel named the dispenser. A secondary air injection, called aeration, is added at the bottom of the tube to stabilize the flow. Contrary to risers, the particle mass flow rate is controlled by a combination of the overpressure in the dispenser and the aeration air velocity in the tube. This is an originality of the system that justifies a specific study of the fluidization regimes in a wide range of operating parameters. Moreover, due to the high value of the aspect ratio, the particle flow structure varies along the tube. Experiments were conducted with Geldart Group A particles at ambient temperature with a 0.045 m internal diameter and 3 m long tube. Various temporal pressure signal processing methods, applied in the case of classical risers, are applied. Over a short acquisition time, a cross-reference of the results is necessary to identify and characterize the fluidization regimes. This work presents an active thermal management system (TMS) for building a safer module of lithium-ion capacitor (LiC) technology, in which 10 LiCs are connected in series. The proposed TMS is a forced air-cooled TMS (ACTMS) that uses four axial DC 12 V fans: two fans are responsible for blowing the air from the environment into the container while two other fans suck the air from the container to the environment. An experimental investigation is conducted to study the thermal behavior of the module, and numerical simulations are carried out to be validated against the experiments. The main aim of the model development is the optimization of the proposed design. Therefore, the ACTMS has been optimized by investigating the impact of inlet air velocity, inlet and outlet positions, module rotation by 90° towards the airflow direction, gap spacing between neighboring cells, and uneven gap spacing between neighboring cells. The 3D thermal model is accurate, so the validation error between the simulation and experimental results is less than 1%. It is proven that the ACTMS is an excellent solution to keep the temperature of the LiC module in the desired range by air inlet velocity of 3 m/s when all the fans are blowing the air from both sides, the outlet is designed on top of the module, the module is rotated, and uneven gap space between neighboring cells is set to 2 mm for the first distance between the cells (d1) and 3 mm for the second distance (d2). In this paper, a triple-pass solar air heater with three inlets is analytically investigated. The effects of airflow ratios of the second and third passes (ranging from 0 to 0.4), and the Reynolds number of the third pass (ranging from 8000 to 18,000) on the thermohydraulic efficiency and entropy generation are assessed. An absorber plate equipped with rectangular fins on both sides is used to enhance heat transfer. The air temperature change in the passes is represented by ordinary differential equations and solved by numerical integration. The results demonstrate that the effect of the third pass airflow ratio on the thermohydraulic efficiency and entropy generation is more significant than that of the second pass airflow ratio. The difference in air temperature through the collector shows an insignificant reduction, but the air pressure loss is only 50% compared with that of a traditional triple-pass solar air heater. Increasing the air flow ratios dramatically reduces entropy generation. Multi-objective optimization found a Reynolds number of 11,156 for both the airflow ratio of the second pass of 0.258 and airflow ratio of the third pass of 0.036 to be the an optimal value to achieve maximum thermohydraulic efficiency and minimum entropy generation. A tridimensional turbulent flow model is established for a closed heat pump drying system with waste heat recovery to improve the drying air flow characteristics and reduce the energy consumption of air circulation. The active flow distribution mode is introduced to guide air flowing in the system's drying cabinet, top air duct, mixing zone, and heat pump. It is found that the wind velocity in the cabinet's supply channel is greater than that in the return channel, the velocity distribution in the top duct is uneven, and the outlet velocity of the bypass fan is high and a vortex forms. A partition panel added in the top duct and modulating fans in the drying cabinet are proposed to solve these problems. The simulation results show that removing the circulating fan, changing the volume flow of the bypass fan, adopting the alternative operation mode of the bypass fans, reducing the air volume flow of the supply fan, and reducing the total pressure of the fans can improve the dry air velocity uniformity in the drying cabinet and reduce the energy consumption of the fans. Since conventional lightning protection measures do not effectively extinguish subsequent arcs of electrical frequency after the passage of lightning, it is impossible to prevent lightning-related accidents on the distribution lines. To solve this problem, a 10 kV multi-chamber arc-quenching arrester (MCAA) applicable to transmission lines of different voltage levels is developed. In order to research the arc-quenching characteristics of the MCAA, COMSOL software was used to simulate and analyze the high-speed airflow coupled arc process. Under the action of a strong airflow at high speed, the arc is segmented, the temperature of the arc falls sharply, and eventually, the arc is extinguished. In the simulation process, the conductivity of the arc and the clouds of change of air speed were achieved. It may be concluded that arc segmentation time and airflow generation time are at a subtle level. Meanwhile, an experimental circuit was established to conduct the arc-quenching experiment. A high-speed camera was used to observe the experimental process and the oscilloscope was used to record the arc-quenching waveform. The experimental results show that the MCAA had a good arc-extinguishing effect and that the arc was extinguished within 0.35 ms. The current amplitude of the frequency arc was 1.2 kA. The performance gap, defined as the difference between the measured and the calculated performance of energy-efficient buildings, has long been identified as a major issue in the building domain. The present study aims to better understand the performance gap in high-energy performance buildings in Switzerland, in an ex-post evaluation. For an energy-efficient building, the measured heating demand, collected through a four-year measurement campaign was compared to the calculated one and the results showed that the latter underestimates the real heating demand by a factor of two. As a way to reduce the performance gap, a probabilistic framework was proposed so that the different uncertainties of the model could be considered. By comparing the mean of the probabilistic heating demand to the measured one, it was shown that the performance gap was between 20–30% for the examined period. Through a sensitivity analysis, the active air flow and the shading factor were identified as the most influential parameters on the uncertainty of the heating demand, meaning that their wrong adjustment, in reality, or in the simulations, would increase the performance gap. The article presents the results of theoretical and experimental studies of coalescence, disruption, and fragmentation of liquid droplets in multiphase and multicomponent gas-vapor-droplet media. Highly promising approaches are considered to studying the interaction of liquid droplets in gaseous media with different compositions and parameters. A comparative analysis of promising technologies is carried out for the primary and secondary atomization of liquid droplets using schemes of their collision with each other. The influence of a range of factors and parameters on the collision processes of drops is analyzed, in particular, viscosity, density, surface, and interfacial tension of a liquid, trajectories of droplets in a gaseous medium, droplet velocities and sizes. The processes involved in the interaction of dissimilar droplets with a variable component composition and temperature are described. Fundamental differences are shown in the number and size of droplets formed due to binary collisions and collisions between droplets and particles at different Weber numbers. The conditions are analyzed for the several-fold increase in the number of droplets in the air flow due to their collisions in the disruption mode. A technique is described for generalizing and presenting the research findings on the interaction of drops in the form of theoretical collision regime maps using various approaches. The overall building performance depends mainly on the energy performance, indoor air quality, and moisture performance. In order to accurately calculate the building performance, the development of a model with the ability to integrate all three performances is required. In this research, a combination of three models namely EnergyPlus for energy, CONTAM for indoor air quality, and WUFI for moisture transport are used to develop an integrated model. The mechanism of this combination is based on the exchange of temperatures, airflows, and heating-cooling flows control variables between all three sub-models. By using the paired sample t-test, an integrated model is verified and its accuracy is validated. The accuracy of the integrated model is verified by the paired sample t-test. In order to analyze the accuracy of the integrated model in comparison with single models, four scenarios of airtight fan off, airtight fan on, leaky fan off, and leaky fan on are defined for a three-story-house subjected to three different climate cities of Montreal, Vancouver, and Miami. Percentage differences of simulated measures with the ASHRAE Standard are considered as the performance criteria. The simulated results by single and integrated models are compared and analyzed. Finally, the scenarios with the high performances are evaluated in terms of energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and moisture for Montreal, Vancouver, and Miami. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of valve mechanisms on the exhaust residual gas (ERG) and effective release energy (ERE) of a motorcycle engine. Here, a simulation model and the estimation a new valve mechanism design is presented. An AVL-Boost simulation model and an experiment system were established. The classical spline approximation method was used to design a new cam profile for various valve lifts. The simulation model was used to estimate the effect of the new valve mechanism designs on engine performance. A new camshaft was produced based on the research data. The results show that the engine obtained a maximum engine brake torque of 21.53 Nm at 7000 rpm, which is an increase of 3.2% compared to the engine using the original valve mechanism. In addition, the residual gas was improved, the maximum engine effective release energy was 0.83 kJ, the maximum engine power was 18.1 kW, representing an improvement of 7.2%, and the air mass flow was improved by 4.97%. With the increase in the voltage level and number of transmission lines, the probability of lightning strikes on transmission lines is significantly increased, while lightning breakage accidents occur frequently. Therefore, an explosion airflow arc-quenching gap for 110 kV transmission lines was developed based on the idea of rapid extinction. A mathematical model of the detonation wave based on the CJ (Chapman–Jouget) detonation wave theory was developed to calculate the detonation air pressure and analyze its influencing factors. ANSYS software and the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model were used to simulate the process of detonation airflow coupled with an arc, and the simulation results indicated that the power frequency arc was evidently suppressed with the influence of airflow, which can effectively prevent arcing. A combined impulse and power frequency test and arc-quenching tests were performed to verify the effectiveness of the arc-quenching gap. The results of the combined test indicated that the arc burn time was 0.1 ms and that no power frequency continuous current was displayed. The results ensured the accuracy of the simulation model. The results of the arc-quenching tests proved that the explosion airflow can extinguish a power frequency arc with an amplitude of 40 kA in half of a power frequency arc cycle. Uneven air distribution in chamber dryers is a common and serious technological challenge. A study using CFD (Computer Fluid Dynamics) simulation, supported by measurements in a heat pump chamber dryer, confirmed irregular airflows. Performing simulations with modified settings and additional chamber modifications enabled the airflows to be visualized and optimized. It was shown that a modification of the chamber where a rotating disc had been used had a positive effect on the uniform distribution of air flows in the drying chamber. The modification significantly improves the energy balance of the beef drying process. Optimization of the process resulted in obtaining a high quality final product-beef jerky. This investigation proves that appropriate drying process control and introduced modifications enable high product quality and a safe level of water activity without the preservatives supplementation. Research work on the air flow in mine workings frequently utilises computer techniques in the form of numeric simulations. However, it is very often necessary to apply simplifications when building a geometrical model. The assumption of constant model geometry on its entire length is one of the most frequent simplifications. This results in a substantial shortening of the geometrical model building process, and a concomitant shortening of the time of numerical computations; however, it is not known to what extent such simplifications worsen the accuracy of simulation results. The paper presents a new methodology that enables precise reproduction of the studied mine gallery and the obtaining of a satisfactory match between simulation results and in-situ measurements. It utilises the processing of data from laser scanning of a mine gallery, simultaneous multi-point measurements of the velocity field at selected gallery cross-sections, unique for mine conditions, and the SAS turbulence model, recently introduced to engineering analyses of flow issues. The Haida plank house is one of the most important models built by the native American Indians. Built on the southwest coast of Canada, it adapts the tradition of the ancient pit houses to the requirements of the humid and cold climate characteristic of the Haida Gwaii Islands. This construction is composed by two main pieces: the central pit covered by a wooden envelope. Both protect its dwellers and their hearths. The ventilation system is based on two solutions: the gaps between the wall planks and a smoke hole that can be opened or closed in the roof at will. The aim of the present research is to analyze the way these two elements arrange the indoor airflow in order to ensure the comfortability of the house. Four cases have been proposed, according to four different dimensions for the gaps: 1, 2, 3 and 4 cm. Each case has been doubled in order to determine how the state of the smoke hole affected the corresponding results. This way, it has been concluded that if the gaps' width becomes higher than 4 cm, the airflow velocity comfort level would be exceeded. In buildings, the HVAC systems are responsible for a major part of the energy consumption. Incorrect design or selection of the system and improper installation, operation, and maintenance of the systems' elements may result in increased energy consumption. It is worth remembering that the main aim of the appropriate system is to maintain the high quality of the indoor environment. Appropriate selection of the HVAC solution ensures both thermal and quality parameters of the air, independently of the internal and external heat loads. The microclimate of a room is affected not only by air temperature, humidity, and purity, but also by air velocity in the occupied zone. The proper air velocity distribution prevents discomfort, particularly at workstations. Based on the measurements in the office building, an analysis of velocity profiles of air supplying two different types of linear diffusers was carried out. The analysis was made based on the results of measurements performed with thermoanemometers in the actual facility. During the study, temperature of the supply air was lower that the air in the room. Analysis was focused on the airflow fluctuation and its impact on the users' comfort. This is an obvious topic but extremely rarely mentioned in publications related to air diffusers. The results show the importance of air fluctuation and its influence on the users' comfort. During the measurements, the instantaneous air velocity for one of the analyzed types of the diffuser was up to 0.34 m/s, while the average value from the period of 240 s for the same measuring point was relatively low: it was 0.19 m/s. Only including the airflow variability over time allowed for choosing the type of diffuser, which ensures the comfort of users. The measurements carried out for two linear diffusers showed differences in the operation of these diffusers. The velocity in the occupied zone was much higher for one type (0.36 m/s, 3.00 m from diffusers) than for another one (0.22 m/s, 5.00 m from diffusers). The paper presents the results of experimental and model tests of transport of dispersed fluid droplets forming a cloud of aerosol in a stream of air ventilating a selected section of the underground excavation. The excavation selected for testing is part of the ventilation network of the Experimental Mine Barbara of the Central Mining Institute. For given environmental conditions, such as temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and velocity of air, the distribution of aerosol droplet changes in the mixture of air and water vapor along the excavation at a distance was measured at 10 m, 25 m, and 50 m from the source of its emission. The source of aerosol emission in the excavation space was a water nozzle that was located 25 m from the inlet (inlet) of the excavation. The obtained results of in situ tests were related to the results of numerical calculations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Numerical calculations were performed using Ansys-Fluent and Ansys-CFX software. The dimensions and geometry of the excavation under investigation are presented. Deep mining results in an increasingly serious hazard. Based on the principle of heat transfer and radiant cooling, a three-dimensional heat transfer model of the working face was established. The influence of the inlet airflow parameter, the surrounding wall temperature and other parameters on the temperature distribution of airflow along the working face were analyzed under the radiation cooling mode. The results show that the increment of airflow temperature in several sections along the working face decreases by 0.67 °C, 0.48 °C, 0.40 °C, 0.36 °C, 0.33 °C, 0.29 °C respectively. The farther away from the airflow inlet, the more obvious the cooling effect was. The airflow temperature of the working face is positively correlated with the airflow inlet temperature and the surrounding wall temperature, and is negatively correlated with the airflow velocity. The research provides a good solution for the working face cooling of deep mines, and also provides a theoretical reference for the research on the radiation cooling technology of the working face. Airflow occurring in a ventilation duct is characterized by low velocity and hence low Reynolds number. In these conditions, either a laminar, transitional or turbulent flow will occur. Different flow conditions result in different values of the friction coefficient. To achieve the transitional flow in numerical simulation, a modified algebraic model for bypass transition (modified k − ω ) was used. Numerical simulation was validated using Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) in the circular channel. The modified algebraic model consists of only two partial differential equations, which leads to much faster calculation than the shear stress transport model. Results of the modified algebraic model are largely consistent with either the measurement and shear stress transport model considering laminar and transitional flow. The purpose of this study is to compare the load calculation results by a model using the air changes per hour (ACH) method and a model using an airflow network (AFN) and to ascertain what causes the difference between the two models. In the basic case study, the difference in the heat transfer distribution of the model in the interior space was investigated. The most significant difference between the two models is the heat transfer that results from infiltration. Parameter analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between the difference and the environmental variables. The result shows that the greater the difference is between the air temperature inside the balcony and the outdoor air temperature, and the greater the air flows from the balcony to the residential area, and the greater the heating and cooling load difference occurs. The analysis using the actual weather files of five domestic cities in South Korea rather than a virtual case shows that the differences are not so obvious when the wind blows at a constant speed throughout the year, but are dominant when the wind does not blow during the night and is stronger alongside the occurrence of sunlight during the day. The paper presents a comprehensive numerical and experimental analysis of the Tesla turbine. The turbine rotor had 5 discs with 160 mm in diameter and inter-disc gap equal to 0.75 mm. The nozzle apparatus consisted of 4 diverging nozzles with 2.85 mm in height of minimal cross-section. The investigations were carried out on air in subsonic flow regime for three pressure ratios: 1.4, 1.6 and 1.88. Maximal generated power was equal to 126 W and all power characteristics were in good agreement with numerical calculations. For each pressure ratio, maximal efficiency was approximately the same in the experiment, although numerical methods proved that efficiency slightly dropped with the increase of pressure ratio. Measurements included pressure distribution in the plenum chamber and tip clearance and temperature drop between the turbine's inlet and the outlet. For each pressure ratio, the lowest value of the total temperature marked the highest efficiency of the turbine, although the lowest static temperature was shifted towards higher rotational speeds. The turbine efficiency could surpass 20% assuming the elimination of the impact of the lateral gaps between the discs and the casing. This article presents a proposal for a wireless diagnostic system for checking the air tightness of the ventilation network. The solution is designed to increase crew safety in underground mining plants and increase the energy efficiency of the ventube ventilation system. The system is based on sensors measuring the pressure inside the ventilation duct in relation to the barometric pressure in the immediate vicinity of the duct. The flow of diagnostic data is based on a cascade transfer. The data from the first sensor are transferred successively to the last one. Based on the prior calibration of alarm thresholds in each device, the leakage or factor influencing the increase of air flow resistance is located. The article presents the genesis of the creation and discusses the principle and purpose of the system. In the following chapters, the progress of work related to testing the system in laboratory, industrial, and underground conditions at the Velenje Premogovnik mine (Slovenia) is presented. The authors analyze the test results and indicate the directions of possible further work on improving the system. The proposed leak detection system is based on a network of pressure sensors that communicate with each other to clearly pinpoint the leak location.
