The resistance of solid-separated solid wastes (SSDWs) to moderate airflow ranging from 0.05 to 0.30 m3/s-m2 was measured at various bed depths and moisture levels. The pressure drop across a loose-fill fixed bed column was observed to increase more rapidly with increasing airflow rates than with increasing bed depths. An increase in the moisture content (10 percentage points) caused a decrease in the pressure drop by an average of 13.2–17.0%, evaluated within a 10–40% moisture content (MC) range. A full-factorial model analysis using standard least squares was used to describe the main effects and interactions of the test parameters in predicting the pressure drop. The Hukill and Ives nonlinear model was able to accurately describe the airflow resistance data of SSDWs at various MCs. The performance of a hybrid solar desalination system is predicted in this work using an enhanced prediction method based on a supervised machine-learning algorithm. A humidification–dehumidification (HDH) unit and a single-stage flashing evaporation (SSF) unit make up the hybrid solar desalination system. The Al-Biruni Earth Radius (BER) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms serve as the foundation for the suggested algorithm. Using experimental data, the BER–PSO algorithm is trained and evaluated. The cold fluid and injected air volume flow rates were the algorithms' inputs, and their outputs were the hot and cold fluids' outlet temperatures as well as the pressure drop across the heat exchanger. Both the volume mass flow rate of hot fluid and the input temperatures of hot and cold fluids are regarded as constants. The results obtained show the great ability of the proposed BER–PSO method to identify the nonlinear link between operating circumstances and process responses. In addition, compared to the other analyzed models, it offers better statistical performance measures for the prediction of the outlet temperature of hot and cold fluids and pressure drop values. At present, China's high-speed rail is in a period of rapid development. Most of the refrigerants used in Chinese motor train units at this stage are still R134a and R407c, which have an impact on the environment. In response to the environmental protection concept of green travel, it is of great significance to study the air conditioning system of motor train units using CO2 refrigerant. Using CFD simulation analysis technology, the heat transfer performance of the air side of the CO2 finned tube evaporator used in the air conditioning system of the motor train unit is studied. We select the air outlet temperature, pressure drop, heat transfer factor, and resistance factor as the objective function, in addition, monitoring points are set up in the air flow channel to monitor the turbulent flow field and pipe wall pressure. Our research shows that the cooling capacity of the CO2 evaporator can reach up to 29.76 kW, which can meet the heat exchange required in the air conditioning system of the motor train unit. In order to obtain a better structure and the conditions of the heat transfer effect, structural optimization was conducted. The simulation results demonstrate several trends: (i) With the augment of the air inlet velocity, the cooling capacity of the evaporator increases and the heat exchange effect improves; when the air inlet ve > 2.2 m/s, the effect of continuing to augment ve on heat exchange is weak. (ii) Following appropriate reduction of the diameter of the heat exchange tube, the wind resistance is reduced and the cooling capacity of the evaporator is improved. (iii) With the enlargement of the fin spacing, the turbulent motion in the flow channel can be fully developed, there is a peak in the change in the heat exchange tube area optimization factor, and the optimal fin spacing is between 1.6 mm and 1.7 mm; at this time, the average turbulent kinetic energy of the air side is larger and the turbulent dissipation rate is smaller. The motivation behind solving the issue of estimating the flow parameters of the pneumatic system of a launcher was the need to obtain the take-off energy with a value exceeding 80 kJ. The take-off energy and the initial speed of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) depends on the pressure drop time in the launcher's pneumatic system. The aim of the research was to estimate the flow parameters of the trigger system of the UAV launchers in order to achieve the shortest time of its operation. Due to the lack of a description of the selection of pneumatic elements and their flow characteristics in the available literature, the article attempts to analytically describe the air flow through pneumatic units. The trigger system is described using the sonic conductivity and the critical pressure ratio. Due to the lack of numerical data on the flow parameters of pneumatic units, a test stand was designed and constructed to determine these parameters. The values of the sound conductivity and the critical pressure ratio were determined for each of the pneumatic units and for the entire system. The proposed method makes it possible to determine the relationship between the operating time and the values of the flow parameters of the pneumatic launch tube release system. In order to clearly understand the air flow resistance characteristics in vertical tanks for sinter waste heat recovery in the steel industry, experimental research on the air flow pressure drop (FPD) performance in a sinter bed layer (BL) was conducted. Based on a self-made experimental device, the measurement values of air FPD for different experimental conditions were determined firstly, and then the concept of Euler number (Eu) in heat exchangers was introduced into the study of air FPD in BL; the change rules of Eu under different particle diameters were analyzed. Finally, the air FPD correlation in sinter BL was obtained and described in the form of Eu, and the error analysis of obtained air FPD correlation was performed. The results show that, the air FPD increases as a second power relationship with the increase in air superficial velocity when the particle diameter is constant. The decrease amplitude of Eu gradually dwindles when increasing the Reynolds number (Re), and the decrease in the Eu shows a reciprocal relationship with the Re. As the bed geometry factor increases, the FPD coefficient, A, decreases as an exponential relationship, while the FPD coefficient, B, increases as a first power relationship. The obtained air FPD correlation in the form of Eu in the experiment is well compatible with the measurement values, and the mean deviation of obtained correlation is 4.67%, showing good originality. As the cooling requirement and the energy prices are increasing rapidly across the world, the need to develop highly efficient cooling equipment is rising as well. Adiabatic cooling employs evaporation to pre-cool the air flowing through a closed-loop coil. This study examines various adiabatic evaporative cooling pads in terms of their pre-cooling potential and advantages over currently available technological solutions through isolating three cross-sectional metal cooling pad shapes (W, Z and Z1). The results of the study suggest that the correlation between Δt↓ and RH↑ is somewhat close in all three cases; however, a slightly higher temperature drop is observed when using a W-shaped metal sheet. Pressure drop variability was negligible under current cooling pad configurations and experimental boundary conditions. It has been shown that tangential inlet return cyclones are commonly used for inlet air filtration of off-road vehicle engines. The wear of the engine elements, and thus their durability, is determined by the efficiency and accuracy of the inlet air filtration. It has been shown that the possibilities of increasing the separation efficiency or decreasing the pressure drop of a cyclone by changing the main dimensions of the cyclone are limited, because any arbitrary change in one of the dimensions of an already operating cyclone may cause the opposite effect. A literature analysis of the possibility of increasing the filtration efficiency of cyclones by modifying the design of selected cyclone components was conducted. In this paper, three modifications of the cyclone design with a tangential inlet of the inlet air filter of a military tracked vehicle were proposed and performed. The symmetrical inlet of the cyclone was replaced with an asymmetrical inlet. The cylindrical outlet tube was replaced with a conical tube, and the edges of the inlet opening were given an additional streamlined shape. The modification process was carried out on three specimens of the reversible cyclone with a tangential inlet. After each modification, an experimental evaluation of the modifications was carried out. The influence of the modifications on the cyclone's efficiency characteristics and pressure drop was examined. Subsequent modifications of the cyclone were performed on the same specimen without removing the previous modifications. Tests were performed in the air flow range QG = 5–30 m3/h. Polydisperse "fine" test dust with grain size dpmax = 80 µm was used for testing. The dust concentration at the cyclone inlet was set at 1 g/m2. The performed modifications caused a slight (about 1%) increase in separation efficiency in the range of small (up to QG = 22 m3/h) flux values and about 30% decrease in pressure drop in the whole range of the QG flux, which positively influences the increase in engine filling and its power. There was a noticeable increase in filtration accuracy in the range of low and high values of QG flux, which results in a decrease in the wear of engine components, especially the piston-piston ring-cylinder (P-PR-C) association, and an increase in their durability. This study conducted a radial flow experiment to investigate the existence of non-Darcy flow and calculate the non-Darcy "inertia" coefficient; the experiment was performed on seven cylindrical perforated artificial porous media samples. Two hundred thirty-one runs were performed, and the pressure drop was reported. The non-Darcy coefficient β was calculated and compared with available in the literature. The results showed that the non-Darcy coefficient decreased nonlinearly and converged on a value within a specific range as the permeability increased. Nonetheless, it was found that the non-Darcy flow exists even in the very low flow rate deployed in this study. In addition, it has been found that the non-Darcy effect is not due to turbulence but also the inertial effect. The existence of a non-Darcy flow was confirmed for all the investigated samples. Multi-tube multi-fin heat exchangers are extensively used in various industries. In the current work, detailed experimental investigations were carried out to establish the flow/heat transfer characteristics in three distinct heat exchanger geometries. A novel perforated plain fin design was developed, and its performance was evaluated against standard plain and louvred fins designs. Experimental setups were designed, and the tests were carefully carried out which enabled quantification of the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics. In the experiments the average velocity of air was varied in the range of 0.7 m/s to 4 m/s corresponding to Reynolds numbers of 600 to 2650. The water side flow rates in the tubes were kept at 0.12, 0.18, 0.24, 0.3, and 0.36 m3/h corresponding to Reynolds numbers between 6000 and 30,000. It was found that the louvred fins produced the highest heat transfer rate due to the availability of higher surface area, but it also produced the highest pressure drops. Conversely, while the new perforated design produced a slightly higher pressure drop than the plain fin design, it gave a higher value of heat transfer rate than the plain fin especially at the lower liquid flow rates. Specifically, the louvred fin gave consistently high pressure drops, up to 3 to 4 times more than the plain and perforated models at 4 m/s air flow, however, the heat transfer enhancement was only about 11% and 13% over the perforated and plain fin models, respectively. The mean heat transfer rate and pressure drops were used to calculate the Colburn and Fanning friction factors. Two novel semiempirical relationships were derived for the heat exchanger's Fanning and Colburn factors as functions of the non-dimensional fin surface area and the Reynolds number. It was demonstrated that the Colburn and Fanning factors were predicted by the new correlations to within ±15% of the experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the uneven air stream distribution problem of individual cyclones is studied in the multi-cyclones of intake air filters in special vehicles' engines. This problem increases in multi-cyclones, in which several dozen cyclones have a common dust trap from which the collected dust is continuously removed by ejection suction. The aim of this study is the recognition of the theoretical and experimental possibility of reducing the streams' unevenness, which should result in an efficiency increase in multi-cyclone separation. The methods that led to obtaining a relative stream uniformity from the suction of individual cyclones was analyzed. The method for creating equal pressure drops between the suction streams in the channels was used to achieve this goal. For this purpose, the internal structure of the multi-cyclone settler was changed. The multi-cyclone settling tank space was divided by vertical partitions into independent segments. The settling tank segment was then divided with horizontal shelves into suction channels of different heights, which were assigned a specific number of individual cyclones. The suction channels' height was theoretically selected in terms of the equal resistance to air stream flow through the channels. For this purpose, the multi-cyclone dust settler segment model was developed. The theoretically determined suction channel's height was verified by performing experimental flow tests in four (A, B, C, D) dust settler variants. Suction streams of satisfactory uniformity from the cyclones of the variant D settling tank were obtained at a level of 5%. In the next stage, experimental tests of the segment cyclones were carried out with dust before and after the division into suction channels of variant D for the settling tank. A significant increase was achieved from 93.73% to 96.08% in the cyclones' separation efficiency, which were located as far away from the suction stub as possible and led to a reduction in the non-uniformity of cyclone efficiency in the segment.
