To enhance the heat-transfer performance of scramjet engines, a numerical simulation was conducted on the heat-transfer process of RP-3 aviation kerosene under supercritical pressure within a horizontal micro-fine circular tube. The intrinsic mechanism of the heat-transfer process was analyzed, summarizing the impacts of mass flux, inlet temperature, and gravitational acceleration. Furthermore, four commonly used buoyancy criterion numbers were compared and evaluated. The results indicate that the heat-transfer process can be divided into five phases: heating inlet phase, normal heat-transfer phase, heat-transfer deterioration phase, heat-transfer enhancement phase, and high-temperature normal heat-transfer phase. The heating inlet phase is significantly influenced by the inlet temperature, while the heat-transfer deterioration is affected both by the thermal property variations of the aviation kerosene and the buoyancy effects. Lower mass flux and hypergravity conditions all exacerbate heat-transfer deterioration. Inlet temperature, however, does not affect the heat-transfer pattern. This study presents a one-dimensional mathematical model developed to simulate multi-zone thermal storage systems using phase change materials (PCMs). The model enables precise analysis of temperature distribution in the layered storage based on several PCM configurations and properties. It is distinguished by its adaptability to various tank geometries and the number of PCM capsules, enabling its application under diverse operating conditions. By simplifying the implementation of heat transfer processes that depend on the shape of the capsule and the thermal properties of the PCM, the computation time can be reduced to a level that makes simulations over longer periods feasible. Experimental validation confirmed the accuracy of the model, with deviations below 6%, underscoring its practical applicability. The study demonstrates that individual layering in the storage tank can be achieved by filling it with PCMs of different melting points without compromising the maximum storage capacity. It is shown that including a PCM layer can maintain the outlet temperature 20% longer while storing 14% more energy. The results point out the model's potential to improve the performance of thermal storage systems through targeted PCM layer configurations. The suspension of different nanoparticles into various conventional thermal fluids to synthesize nanofluids has been proven to possess superior thermal, optical, tribological, and convective properties, and the heat transfer performance over conventional thermal fluids. This task appears trivial but is complicated and significant to nanofluid synthesis and its subsequent utilization in diverse applications. The stability of mono and hybrid nanofluids is significantly related to stirring duration and speed; volume, density, and base fluid type; weight/volume concentration, density, nano-size, and type of mono or hybrid nanoparticles used; type and weight of surfactant used; and sonication time, frequency, mode, and amplitude. The effects of these parameters on stability consequently affect the thermal, optical, tribological, and convective properties, and the heat transfer performance of nanofluids in various applications, leading to divergent, inaccurate, and suspicious results. Disparities in results have inundated the public domain in this regard. Thus, this study utilized published works in the public domain to highlight the trend in mono or hybrid nanofluid formulation presently documented as the norm, with the possibility of changing the status quo. With the huge progress made in this research area in which a large quantum of different nanoparticles, base fluids, and surfactants have been deployed and more are still emerging in the application of these advanced thermal fluids in diverse areas, there is a need for conformity and better accuracy of results. Reproduction of results of stability, thermal, optical, tribological, anti-wear, and fuel properties; photothermal conversion; and supercooling, lubrication, engine, combustion, emission, thermo-hydraulic, and heat transfer performances of formulated mono or hybrid nanofluids are possible through the optimization and detailed documentation of applicable nanofluid preparation parameters (stirring time and speed, sonication duration, amplitude, mode, frequency, and surfactant concentration) employed in formulating mono or hybrid nanofluids. This study investigates the thermal-stress characteristics of a bi-metallic Ti-6Al-4V-Nitinol butt joints manufactured via laser welding. Particularly, the thermal profile along the weld interface and the deformation profile of the finished welded workpiece. A decoupled transient thermomechanical simulation model was constructed to recreate the welding process. This decoupled thermomechanical simulation model consisted of two transient simulation models. A transient thermal simulation model and a transient structural simulation model, with the thermal history of the transient thermal model being fed into the transient structural model. Both the thermal and structural portions of the model utilized temperature-dependent thermal and structural properties of Ti-6Al-4V and Nitinol. The temperature profile of the transient thermal-stress model aligns with the experimental thermal profile within 5% error. The deformation profile also matches the experimental results within 5% error. This approach to modeling laser welding can stand as a guide to predict both thermal and deformation profiles generated during the laser welding process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents the different properties of phase change material (PCM) and Microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) employed to cold storage/transportation system with a solar-driven cooling cycle. Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) tests have been performed to analyze the materials enthalpy, melting temperature range, and temperature range of solidification. KD2 Pro is used to test the thermal conductivities of phase change materials slurry and the results were used to compare the materials heat transfer performance. The slurry flow characteristics of MEPCM slurry also have been tested. Furthermore, in order to analyze the improvement effect on stability, the stability of MEPCM slurry with different surfactants have been tested. The researches of the PCM and MEPCM thermal properties revealed a more prospective application for phase change materials in energy storage/transportation systems. In this present study, numerical and theoretical analysis were both used to investigate the effect of the variable baffle spacing on the thermal characteristics of a small shell and tube heat exchanger. The numerical study was performed by using a three dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method and the computations were performed under steady-state conditions. We employed five different cases where the first had equal baffle spacing and the others had variable ones considering different configurations for balancing the pressure drop on the shell side. Theoretical calculations were run using the Bell-Delaware and Kern methods which are the most commonly used methods in the available literature. We show that the thermal performance of a shell and tube heat exchanger can be improved by evaluating together the results of the CFD and Bell-Delaware methods. From the numerical results, we can say that variable spacing with centered baffle spacing scheme can be proposed as an alternative shell side construction layout compared to an equal baffle spacing scheme. The thermal conductivity of soils is a fundamental parameter for the design of ground-source heat pump systems (GSHPs) and energy geostructures. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the physical, mineralogical, and thermal characteristics of typical coastal soils from Tabasco, Mexico. Twenty-five soil samples from four different strata were studied using the thermal needle probe method, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and standard geotechnical soil classification tests. The results showed a significant correlation between the dry density and porosity with the thermal conductivity of the studied samples, which ranged between 1.17 and 2.32 W m−1 K−1. The performed statistical analyses indicated that coarse-grained soils had larger thermal conductivities and higher variability than fine-grained soils. Additionally, the performance of six models to estimate the thermal conductivity of soils was validated against the experimental data. All models provided accurate estimations for fine-grained soils, but only the effective medium theory (EMT) showed an adequate fit for coarse-grained soils. The results represent one of the first datasets for the thermal properties of Mexican soils. They will contribute to the implementation of GSHPs and energy geostructures in the country and locations with similar subsoil conditions, especially where time and resources are not available for their experimental determination. The materials and the technology used to build the ground heat exchangers significantly affect the heat transfer performance of a geothermal system, in addition to the local geological and hydrogeological context. Among expense items such as the coupled heat pumps and the applied drilling technology, the heat exchangers play a key role in the shallow geothermal market. For this reason, they are usually made with plastic. Metal tubes are not widely used because of corrosion issues, which can compromise the reliability of the system over time. According to best practices, metal is an unfavorable choice if the pipes are not made of corrosion resistant alloys, such as stainless steel, but the overall performance is strongly related to the heat transfer efficiency. In this study, laser-flash technique is applied on carbon steel samples with anti-corrosion coatings and on corrosion resistant materials (stainless steel grades used for pipes), thus, allowing the comparison of their thermophysical properties. These properties are used to evaluate each solution in terms of thermal resistance. Ground thermal properties are the design basis of ground source heat pumps (GSHP). However, effective ground thermal properties cannot be obtained through the traditional thermal response test (TRT) method when it is used in the coaxial borehole heat exchanger (CBHE). In this paper, an improved TRT (ITRT) method for CBHE is proposed, and the field ITRT, based on the actual project, is carried out. The high accuracy of the new method is verified by laboratory experiments. Based on the results of the ITRT and laboratory experiment, the 3D numerical model for CBHE is established, in which the flow directions, sensitivity analysis of heat transfer characteristics, and optimization of circulation flow rate are studied, respectively. The results show that CBHE should adopt the anulus-in direction under the cooling condition, and the center-in direction under the heating condition. The influence of inlet temperature and flow rate on heat transfer rate is more significant than that of the backfill grout material, thermal conductivity of the inner pipe, and borehole depth. The circulating flow rate of CBHE between 0.3 m/s and 0.4 m/s can lead to better performance for the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermoacoustic refrigerators have huge potential to replace conventional refrigeration systems as an alternative clean refrigeration technology. These devices utilize conversion of acoustic power and heat energy to generate the desired cooling. The stack plays a pivotal role in the performance of Standing Wave Thermoacoustic Refrigerators (SWTARs), as the heat transfer takes place across it. Performance of stacks can be significantly improved by making an arrangement of different materials inside the stack, resulting in anisotropic thermal properties along the length. In the present numerical study, the effect of multi-layered stack on the refrigeration performance of a SWTAR has been evaluated in terms of temperature drop across the stack, acoustic power consumed and device Coefficient of Performance (COP). Two different aspects of multi-layered stack, namely, different material combinations and different lengths of stacked layers, have been investigated. The combinations of four stack materials and length ratios have been investigated. The numerical results showed that multi-layered stacks produce lower refrigeration temperatures, consume less energy and have higher COP value than their homogeneous counterparts. Among all the material combinations of multi-layered stack investigated, stacks composed of a material layer with low thermal conductivity at the ends, i.e., RVC, produced the best performance with an increase of 26.14% in temperature drop value, reduction in the acoustic power consumption by 4.55% and COP enhancement of 5.12%. The results also showed that, for a constant overall length, an increase in length of side stacked material layer results in an increase in values of both temperature drop and COP. We present more than one-year of monitoring results from a thermal energy storage system located in a very cold place with a long winter season. The studied house is in Palmer city, Alaska (~62° N, ~149° W). The house is equipped with solar PV for electricity production and solar thermal collectors which were linked to a sensible thermal energy storage system which is underneath the house's normally unoccupied garage and storage space. Sensors were installed in the thermal storage and solar thermal collector array to monitor system temperatures. In addition, TRNSYS was used for numerical simulation and the results were compared to experimental ones. The maximum observed garage ambient temperature was ~28 °C while the simulated maximum ambient garage temperature was found to be ~22 °C. Results indicate that seasonal solar thermal storages are viable options for reducing the cost of energy in a region with extended freezing periods. Light-emitting diodes are nowadays the most dynamically developing type of light sources. Considering that temperature is the main factor affecting the electrical and lighting parameters of these devices, thermal models are essential subcomponents of the multidomain models commonly used for simulation of their operation. The authors investigated white power light-emitting diodes soldered to Metal Core Printed Circuit Boards (MCPCBs). The tested devices were placed in a light-tight box on a cold plate and their cooling curves were registered for different diode heating current values and various preset cold plate temperatures. These data allowed the computation of optical and real heating power values and consequently the generation of compact thermal models in the form of Foster and Cauer RC ladders. This also rendered possible the analysis of the influence of the considered factors on the compact model element values and their parametrization. The resulting models yield accurate values of diode junction temperature in most realistic operating conditions and they can be easily included in multidomain compact models of power light emitting diodes. In the present paper, the effective thermal conductivities of Li4SiO4-packed beds with both ordered and random packing structures were investigated using thermal resistance network methods based on both an Ohm's law model and a Kirchhoff's law model. The calculation results were also validated and compared with the numerical and experimental results. Firstly, it is proved that the thermal resistance network method based on the Kirchhoff's law model proposed in the present study is reliable and accurate for prediction of effective thermal conductivities in a Li4SiO4-packed bed, while the results calculated with the Ohm's law model underestimate both ordered and random packings. Therefore, when establishing a thermal resistance network, the thermal resistances should be connected along the main heat transfer direction and other heat transfer directions as well in the packing unit. Otherwise, both the total heat flux and effective thermal conductivity in the packing unit will be underestimated. Secondly, it is found that the effect of the packing factor is remarkable. The effective thermal conductivity of a packed bed would increase as the packing factor increases. Multi-domain electro-thermal-optical models of LEDs are required so that their thermal and optical behavior may be predicted during a luminaire design process. Today, no standardized approach exists for the extraction of such models. Therefore, models are not readily provided by LED suppliers to end-users. This results in designers of LED-based luminaires wasting time on LED characterization and ad hoc model extraction themselves. The Delphi4LED project aims to address these deficiencies by identifying standardizable methodologies to extract both electro-optical and thermal compact models of LEDs that together can be used in a multi-domain simulation context. This article describes a methodology to extract compact thermal models of LEDs that are dynamic, in that they accommodate transient thermal effects, and are boundary condition-independent, in that their accuracy is independent of their thermal operating environment. Such models are achieved by first proposing an equivalent thermal nodal network topology. The thermal resistances and capacitances of that network are identified by means of optimization so that the transient thermal response of the network matches that of either an equivalent calibrated 3D thermal model or a transient thermal measurement of a physical sample. The accuracy of the thermal network is then verified by comparing the thermal compact model with a 3D detailed model, which predicts thermal responses within a 3D system-level model. We consider the disposal of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste in horizontal holes drilled into deep, low-permeable geologic formations using directional drilling technology. Residual decay heat emanating from these waste forms leads to temperature increases within the drillhole and the surrounding host rock. The spacing of waste canisters and the configuration of the various barrier components within the horizontal drillhole can be designed such that the maximum temperatures remain below limits that are set for each element of the engineered and natural repository system. We present design calculations that examine the thermal evolution around heat-generating waste for a wide range of material properties and disposal configurations. Moreover, we evaluate alternative layouts of a monitoring system to be part of an in situ heater test that helps determine the thermal properties of the as-built repository system. A data-worth analysis is performed to ensure that sufficient information will be collected during the heater test so that subsequent model predictions of the thermal evolution around horizontal deposition holes will reliably estimate the maximum temperatures in the drillhole. The simulations demonstrate that the proposed drillhole disposal strategy can be flexibly designed to ensure dissipation of the heat generated by decaying nuclear waste. Hydronic Heating Pavement (HHP) is an environmentally friendly method for anti-icing the roads. The HHP system harvests solar energy during summer, stores it in a Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage (STES) and releases the stored energy for anti-icing the road surface during winter. The aims of this study are to investigate: (i) the feasibility of HHP system with low fluid temperature for harvesting solar energy and anti-icing the road surface; and (ii) the long-term operation of the STES. In this study, a Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES) is considered to be the STES. The HHP system and the BTES are decoupled from each other and their performances are investigated separately. A hybrid 3D numerical simulation model is developed to analyze the operation of the HHP system. Moreover, a 3D numerical simulation model is made to calculate the temperature evolution at the borehole walls of the BTES. The climate data are obtained from Östersund, a city in the middle of Sweden with long and cold winter periods. Considering the HHP system with the inlet fluid temperature of 4 °C, the road area of 50 m × 3.5 m as well as the BTES with 20 boreholes and 200 m depth, the result showed that the harvested solar energy during summer is 352.1   kWh / (m 2 · year) , the required energy for anti-icing the road surface is 81.2   kWh / (m 2 · year) and the average temperature variation at the borehole walls after 50 years is +0.5 °C. Installing the HHP system in the road leads to a 1725 h shorter remaining number of hours of slippery condition on the road surface during winter and a 5.1 °C lower temperature on the road surface during summer, compared to a road without the HHP system. In order to analyze the composition of pyrolysis products of insulating oil at different thermal fault levels, this paper proposes a thermal fault simulator device for oil-filled equipment. This device simulates different thermal fault levels by changing the heat source temperature, provides the real pressure environment by using a closed container and analyzes the composition of the insulation products by chromatographic analysis methods. By analyzing the temperature and velocity of flow distributions, it is proved that the fault simulator results are consistent with the actual results. The influence of heat source energy on the pyrolysis reaction of insulating oil is also discussed. The obtained results show that the correlation coefficient between pyrolysis product and heat source energy reaches 0.978. As a result, a multivariate nonlinear energy calculation model is presented to establish the relationship between the complete reaction process and energy. By calculating the energy absorbed by different products during the reaction, it can be found that the decomposition of alkanes absorbs a large amount of energy at the initial stage of pyrolysis, which corresponds to low temperature overheating fault. When the pyrolysis reaction continues, dehydrogenation occupies the leading role, which corresponds to high temperature overheating fault. Biomass heating networks provide renewable heat using low carbon energy sources. They can be powerful tools for economy decarbonization. Heating networks can increase heating efficiency in districts and small size municipalities, using more efficient thermal generation technologies, with higher efficiencies and with more efficient emissions abatement technologies. This paper analyzes the application of a biomass fourth generation district heating, 4GDH (4th Generation Biomass District Heating), in a rural municipality. The heating network is designed to supply 77 residential buildings and eight public buildings, to replace the current individual diesel boilers and electrical heating systems. The development of the new fourth district heating generation implies the challenge of combining using low or very low temperatures in the distribution network pipes and delivery temperatures in existing facilities buildings. In this work biomass district heating designs based on third and fourth generation district heating network criteria are evaluated in terms of design conditions, operating ranges, effect of variable temperature operation, energy efficiency and investment and operating costs. The Internal Rate of Return of the different options ranges from 6.55% for a design based on the third generation network to 7.46% for a design based on the fourth generation network, with a 25 years investment horizon. The article discusses thermal properties of synthetic ester admixed with nanoparticles. The analyzed thermal properties were: thermal conductivity λ, kinematic viscosity υ, density ρ, specific heat cp, and the thermal expansion factor β- all obtained by means of measurements. On the basis of these, the authors calculated the heat transfer factor α, which determines the ability of the liquid to heat transport. The authors used nanoparticles of fullerene C60 and titanium oxide TiO2. The analysis of the thermal properties was done for the temperatures of 25, 40, 60 and 80 °C. The authors analyzed the impact of nanoparticles C60 and TiO2 on thermal properties of synthetic ester. They proved that fullerene C60 in principle had no influence on heat transfer factor α of the ester, while titanium oxide TiO2 had some positive influence on the factor, the value of which increased about 1–3%. In this study, thermal resistances of horizontal cylinders with triangular fins were measured in regard to fin numbers, fins heights, and temperature differences. Thereafter, an empirical correlation was proposed and validated for predicting the Nusselt numbers under the following conditions: Rayleigh number, 200,000–1,000,000; fin aspect ratio, 1.6–5.0; and fin number, 9–72. Finally, with the proposed correlation, the effects of fin numbers, fins heights, and fin thicknesses on the thermal resistances of the horizontal cylinders with triangular fins were investigated. It was shown that the thermal resistance generally increases as the fin number, fin height, and fin thickness increase.
