In this industrialized world, in which the daily consumption of fossil fuels occurs, companies seek to prioritize energy generation through renewable energy sources with minimal environmental impact to improve their energy efficiency. The research objective was to calculate CO2 emissions for the pyrolysis process (conventional low-temperature pyrolysis) in two types of reactors, electric and traditional, where solar panels power the electric reactor. In addition, the amount of polluting gases and the energy consumption necessary to convert biomass into biochar were compared. Residual lignocellulosic biomass (RLB) from various species present in the southern region of Ecuador (eucalyptus, capuli, and acacia) was used, with three replicates per reactor. The electrical reactor (ER) consumed 82.60% less energy than the primary forest biomass fuel “traditional reactor (TR)” and distributed heat better in each pyrolytic process. The TR generated more pollution than the ER; it generated 40.48% more CO, 50% more NO2, 66.67% more SO2, and 79.63% more CH4. Undoubtedly, the pyrolysis process in an ER reduces environmental pollution and creates new bioproducts that could replace fossil fuels. This study provides relevant information on the residual biomass pyrolysis of plant species. These species are traditionally grown in the southern Ecuadorian region. In addition, an analysis of polluting gases for the TR and ER is presented.

The purpose of this work is to present a convenient design approach for metal hydride reactors that meet the specific requirements for hydrogen storage. Three methods from the literature, the time scale, the acceptable envelope, and the reaction front, are used to estimate the maximum thickness of the bed allowing for sufficient heat transfer. Further heat transfer calculations are performed within the framework of standardized heat exchanger via the homemade design software, to generate the complete geometry and dimensions of the reactor. LaNi5 material packed in tubular units based on conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger is selected for analysis for an expected charging time of 500 s, 1000 s, and 1500 s. Apparently, the smaller the expected charging time, the smaller the bed thickness and hence the diameter of the tubular units. After comparison, the method of reaction front was adopted to output standard tube diameters and calculate the weight of the reactor. Significant weight differences were found to result from the varying wall thickness and number of tubes. In general, the shorter the expected charging time, the more tubular units with a small diameter will be built and the heavier the reactor. Fluent 2022 R2 was used to solve the reactor model with a tube diameter of 50 mm supposed to fulfill a charging time of 1500 s. The simulation results revealed that the reaction fraction reaches its maximum and the hydrogen storage process is completed at 500 s. However, because the calculation is conducted on meeting the heat exchange requirements, the average temperature of the bed layer is close to the initial temperature of 290 K and stops changing at 1500 s. The applicability of the method to the design of metal hydride reactors is thus confirmed by the temperature and reaction fraction judgment criteria.

In 2022, the physical start-up stage of the IVG.1M research reactor was successfully completed, initiated by reducing the fuel enrichment of 235U. This phase included the loading of nuclear fuel into the reactor core and conducting experiments to determine the neutron-physical characteristics of the reactor. Prior to the physical start-up, preliminary calculations were performed using the computational code MCNP6 and a full-scale model of the IVG.1M reactor with low-enriched uranium fuel (LEU). During the start-up series, the reactivity worth curves of the reactor control and protection system’s operating and compensating elements were determined. Additionally, experiments were performed to measure the reactivity effects of technological channel draining and to obtain activation reaction rates in the central experimental channel using nickel and gold activation indicators. The results of determining the neutron-physical characteristics of the IVG.1M reactor have confirmed the operability of the reactor core with LEU fuel.

Currently, biofuels represent a solution for the European Union in the transportation sector in order to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the dependency of fossil fuels. Biodiesel from vegetable oils is a solution for countries with low GDP per capita to strengthen the internal agriculture, provide jobs, and reduce the use of fossil fuels. In this study, we model and simulate a temperature regulator designed for the biodiesel transesterification process in a discontinuous batch reactor, using methanol and a homogenous basic catalyst. The simulation was based on the kinetical model of the transesterification reaction and the mathematical model of the reactor. We considered molar ratios of alcohol/oil of 6:1 and 9:1, respectively, to shift the reaction equilibrium towards the production of fatty acid methyl esters. In the design of the simulation, the methanol boiling point was considered a restriction, therefore, temperatures below 65 °C were imposed. The results demonstrate that the increase in temperature results in a decrease in the reaction time and a higher yield, especially for the 6:1 molar ratio reaction, and that the optimum temperature for the batch reactor is of 60 °C. Automatic control improves the performance and costs of production.

The depletion of fossil fuels has led to a search for new methods of fuel and chemical production from biomass. One of the methods of converting biomass into valuable products is the process of pyrolysis. This process has been extensively researched in recent years due to the rising prices of energy and chemicals. This work contains basic information on the pyrolysis process concerning the individual components present in the biomass and the types of biomass used in the pyrolysis process. Particular attention was paid to sewage sludge, the management of which is a big challenge. The influence of the most important process parameters (temperature, heating rate, residence time of the solid and vapor, reaction atmosphere) on the pyrolysis products (char, oil, and gas) was presented. The paper presents an overview of the reactors used in the pyrolysis process, from slow to fast pyrolysis, together with their efficiency, advantages, and disadvantages. The analysis of the application of other thermochemical processes for producing the energy used in the process of pyrolysis and in the drying of the biomass was carried out. Two industrial-scale installations for the pyrolysis of sewage sludge were presented.

Ecosystem destruction is one of today’s significant challenges due to fast industrialisation and an increasing population. It takes several years for solid trash, such as plastic bottles and super-market bags, to decompose in nature. In addition, plastic disposal techniques such as landfilling, reuse, and incineration pose significant threats to human health and the environment. In this paper, we investigated whether the impact of mixing biodiesel with waste oil from recycled plastic on the resulting fuel mixture’s yields better physical and chemical properties. Consequently, pyrolysis is one of the most advantageous and practical waste disposal methods as it is both environmentally benign and efficient. Pyrolysis is the high-temperature thermal breakdown of solid waste to produce pyrolytic oil. The pyrolytic (plastic) oil produced is converted to a hydrocarbon-rich pyrolytic fuel. Similar to diesel and gasoline, pyrolytic fuel has the same calorific value. Internal combustion engines may operate on pyrolytic fuel without suffering a performance reduction. Researchers examined engine performance and exhaust pollutants. The research discovered that the engine could operate on plastic pyrolysis fuel at full load, enhance brake thermal efficiency by 6–8%, and lower UBHC and CO emissions; however, nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions were noticeably higher. The findings demonstrated the possibility of using plastic pyrolysis fuel as a diesel substitute.

Thermochemical heat storage has attracted significant attention in recent years due to potential advantages associated with very high-energy density at the material scale and its suitability for long-duration energy storage because of almost zero loss during storage. Despite the potential, thermochemical heat storage technologies are still in the early stage of development and little has been reported on thermochemical reactors. In this paper, our recent work on the charging and discharging behavior of a fixed-bed thermochemical reactor is reported. Silica gels were used as the sorbent for the experimental work. An effective model was established to numerically study the effect of different charging conditions on the discharging behavior of the reactor, which was found to have a maximum deviation of 10.08% in terms of the root mean square error compared with the experimental results. The experimentally validated modelling also showed that the discharging temperature lift increased by 5.84 times by changing the flow direction of the air in the discharging process when the charging level was at 20%. At a charging termination temperature of 51.25 °C, the maximum discharging temperature was increased by 2.35 °C by reducing the charging flow velocity from 0.64 m/s to 0.21 m/s. An increase in the charging temperature and a decrease in the air humidity increased the maximum discharging outlet temperature lift by 3.37 and 1.89 times, respectively.

A scheme of a gas–liquid mixed jet is designed by installing gas distributor at the bottom of a stirred tank reactor to generate Taylor vortex. The eddy flow characteristics and mass transfer mechanism in the reactor are analyzed by numerical simulation and experiment. The results show that the evolution law of Taylor vortex in a stirred tank reactor with a rotating Reynolds number is similar to that in a conventional Taylor reactor. The Taylor vortex generated in the stirred tank reactor creates a partial plug flow region in the original complete mixing flow pattern, which reduces back mixing, the plug flow area expands with the increase of rotating Reynolds number. Under the condition of a critical rotating Reynolds number (Recr), the gas phase homogeneity of the reactor is increased by 28% and the dissolved oxygen rate is increased by about 5 times, which effectively improves the flow condition in the reactor and strengthens the mass transfer efficiency between the gas and liquid. The research results provide a theoretical basis for breaking through the limitation of small reaction space of conventional Taylor flow reactor and expanding production scale. The refit of kettle reactor is universal and easy to operate.

Hydrogen is increasingly being viewed as a significant fuel for future industrial processes as it offers pathways to zero emission. The UK sees hydrogen as one of a handful of low-carbon solutions for transition to net zero. Currently, most hydrogen production is from steam reforming of natural gas or coal gasification, both of which involve the release of carbon dioxide. Hydrogen production from mini decentralised grids via a thermochemical process, coupled with electricity production, could offer favourable economics for small modular reactors (SMRs), whereby demand or grid management as a solution would include redirecting the power for hydrogen production when electricity demand is low. It also offers a clean-energy alternative to the aforementioned means. SMRs could offer favourable economics due to their flexible power system as part of the dual-output function. This study objective is to investigate the critical performance parameters associated with the nuclear power plant (NPP), the cycle working fluids, and control-system design for switching between electricity and hydrogen demand to support delivery as part of a mini grid system for a reactor power delivering up to approximately 600 MWth power. The novelty of the work is in the holistic parametric analysis undertaken using a novel in-house tool, which analyses the NPP using different working fluids, with a control function bolt-on at the offtake for hydrogen production. The results indicate that the flow conditions at the offtake can be maintained. The choice of working fluids affects the pressure component. However, the recuperator and heat-exchanger effectiveness are considered as efficiency-limiting factors for hydrogen production and electricity generation. As such, the benefit of high-technology heat exchangers cannot be underestimated. This is also true when deciding on the thermochemical process to bolt onto the plant. The temperature of the gas at the end of the pipeline should also be considered to ensure that the minimum temperature-requirement status for hydrogen production is met.

The well-known circuit for the generation of lightning impulse voltage (LIV) on low-inductance loads was introduced by Glaninger in 1975, and the circuit component selection was proposed by Feser. However, the circuit and the approach for the component selection have some difficulties for which further adjustment is required for obtaining the waveform parameters according to the standard requirement. In this paper, an extended Glaninger’s circuit with an additional series resistor is proposed. Furthermore, a systematic design and circuit analysis of LIV generation for low-inductance loads are developed. With the help of a circuit simulator, the circuit analysis for the component selection is described. The validity of the proposed circuit was confirmed by some experimental results in comparison with the simulated ones. The proposed circuit and component selection provide not only the generation waveform according to the standard requirement but also other promising performances in terms of the wide inductance load range from 400 μH to 4 mH, a voltage efficiency of over 80%, an overshoot voltage of below 5%, an undershoot voltage of below 40%, and a maximum charging capacitance of 10 μF. From the simulated and experimental results, the proposed circuit and component selection approach is very useful for the LIV tests on low-inductance loads instead of using the conventional approach based on trial and error.

This study aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere and effectively utilize wasted resources by converting methane, the main component of biogas, into hydrogen. Therefore, a reactor was developed to decompose methane into carbon and hydrogen using solar thermal sources instead of traditional energy sources, such as coal and petroleum. The optical distributions were analyzed using TracePro, a Monte Carlo ray-tracing-based program. In addition, Fluent, a computational fluid dynamics program, was used for the heat and mass transfer, and chemical reaction. The cylindrical indirect heating reactor rotates at a constant speed to prevent damage by the heat source concentrated at the solar furnace. The inside of the reactor was filled with a porous catalyst for methane decomposition, and the outside was surrounded by insulation to reduce heat loss. The performance of the reactor, according to the cavity model, was calculated when solar heat was concentrated on the reactor surface and methane was supplied into the reactor in an environment with a solar irradiance of 700 W/m2, wind speed of 1 m/s, and outdoor temperature of 25 °C. As a result, temperature, methane mass fraction distribution, and heat loss amounts for the two cavities were obtained, and it was found that the effect on the conversion rate was largely dependent on a temperature over 1000 °C in the reactor. Moreover, the heat loss of the full-cavity model decreased by 12.5% and the methane conversion rate increased by 33.5%, compared to the semi-cavity model. In conclusion, the high-temperature environment of the reactor has a significant effect on the increase in conversion rate, with an additional effect of reducing heat loss.

The United Kingdom has declared a climate change policy of 100% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. Efforts thus far have been limited solely to electricity generation methods. While progress has been admirable, effort now must be directed at the nation’s non-electrical energy use. Nuclear energy is an essential part of any energy future, since it is low-carbon, firm and supplies synchronous electricity; however the nation’s nuclear strategy to date has been erratic, costly and lacking in strategic oversight. A multitude of reactor designs are on offer for potential uptake, and decision-makers must have clarity of vision on what these systems must deliver before forming a strategy. Choosing between these systems, given the uncharted energy future faced by the UK is a daunting prospect. Generic feasibility assessment offers a tool for decision-makers to assist them in selecting the most suitable nuclear system for chosen future conditions. Generic feasibility assessment offers an alternative to traditional multi-attribute decision analyses, which can be confusing to even committed stakeholders when large numbers of attributes are weighted and compiled. Generic feasibility assessment forms part of a toolkit which will be of utility in achieving net zero by 2050, given the short time that remains.

Power systems under expansion suffer from escalating fault levels that impact equipment integrity, operational flexibility, and the overall security of the system. The fault current limiter (FCL) is one of approaches used by utilities to limit fault current levels and in Dubai Aluminum (DUBAL) series current limiting reactors are currently used. However, more effective (FCL) topologies are sought and, in this paper, a case study is proposed using resistive high temperature superconducting fault current limiters (HT-SFCLs). The application of HT-SCFLs is aimed here at reducing short-circuit currents, while at the same time enhancing the stability and security of the network. The study involves analysis of three-phase and single-line-to-ground faults, evaluation of the voltage levels and total harmonic distortion (THD) levels at busbars considering different fault scenarios, and demonstrates how the use of HT-SFCLs at various locations improves the plant performance. The ideal HT-SFCL model is adopted for this analysis since the aim is to look at the steady-state performance rather than the transient performance. Comparison with series reactor FCLs which are currently installed in the plant show better performance with the proposed HT-SFCL. Voltage profile values and total harmonic content were also compared with measurement data available at the plant.

Due to the declining of oil reserves in the world in the coming decades, gas hydrate (GH) is seen as the great promise to supply the planet’s energy demand. With this, the importance of studying the behavior of GH, several researchers have been developing different systems that allow greater truthfulness in relation to the conditions where GH is found in nature. This work describes a new system to simulate formation (precipitation) and dissociation of GH primarily at natural conditions at deep-sea, lakes, and permafrost, but also applied for artificial gas hydrates studies (pipelines, and transport of hydrocarbons, CO2, and hydrogen). This system is fully automated and unique, allowing the simultaneous work in two independent reactors, built in Hastelloy C-22, with a capacity of 1 L and 10 L, facilitating rapid analyses when compared to higher-volume systems. The system can operate using different mixtures of gases (methane, ethane, propane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, ammonia), high pressure (up to 200 bar) with high operating safety, temperature (−30 to 200 °C), pH controllers, stirring system, water and gas samplers, and hyphenated system with gas chromatograph (GC) to analyze the composition of the gases formed in the GH and was projected to possibility the visualizations of experiments (quartz windows).

Biomass pyrolysis is usually characterized on the basis of temperature and heating rate. Unfortunately, these parameters are badly defined in processing reactors as well as in laboratory devices. From the results of simplified models, the present paper points out the significant mistakes that can be made when assuming that the actual temperature and heating rate of reacting biomass particles are the same as those of the external heating medium. The difficulties in defining these two parameters are underlined in both cases of a heat source temperature supposed to be constant or to increase with time.

Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is an emerging technology for the valorization of (wet) biomass into a valuable fuel gas composed of hydrogen and/or methane. The harsh temperature and pressure conditions involved in SCWG (T > 375 °C, p > 22 MPa) are definitely a challenge for the manufacturing of the reactors. Metal surfaces are indeed subject to corrosion under hydrothermal conditions, and expensive special alloys are needed to overcome such drawbacks. A ceramic reactor could be a potential solution to this issue. Finding a suitable material is, however, complex because the catalytic effect of the material can influence the gas yield and composition. In this work, a research reactor featuring an internal alumina inlay was utilized to conduct long-time (16 h) batch tests with real biomasses and model compounds. The same experiments were also conducted in batch reactors made of stainless steel and Inconel 625. The results show that the three devices have similar performance patterns in terms of gas production, although in the ceramic reactor higher yields of C2+ hydrocarbons were obtained. The SEM observation of the reacted alumina surface revealed a good resistance of such material to supercritical conditions, even though some intergranular corrosion was observed.

This paper describes the detailed analysis of a reactor application for a power plant to mitigate the voltage rise of a distribution line (DL) caused by the connection of distributed resources (DRs). The maximum capacity of renewable energy generators (REGs) that meets the acceptable voltage rise of a DL and the necessary capacity of the reactor to mitigate that voltage rise according to the different types of REGs are analyzed. The re-coordination of a protection relay and the loss of generation revenue as well as the installation location of a reactor are described. Finally, the ON/OFF conditions of the reactor, such as the magnitudes of the grid voltage and generator voltage, and the duration time of the voltage rise are analyzed. As the voltage rise is mitigated and self-limited in small power plants, it is confirmed that the capacity of the DRs connected to the DL can be increased through a field demonstration.
