A new bandstop filter is presented providing a two-state discrete wide tuning range from 20 to 30 GHz with the same high rejection level of 36 dB. In the design, metal-insulator-metal capacitors are placed on one end of the resonators and on the other end capacitive micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) switches are used to discretely tune the centre reject band of the filter. Experimental results obtained for a binary distributed phase shifter based on RF MEMS coplanar shunt switches are presented. A new approach based on the image parameter representation of two-port networks is proposed for the modelling of this structure. Vector network analyser measurements have been performed by recording the scattering parameters of the device, obtaining a differential phase shift of 180° at a frequency f0 = 13.7 GHz, very close to the theoretical one ftheo=14 GHz. A lumped element model for microwave MEMS switches in series configuration is discussed. The equivalent circuit that is presented, composed of inductors, resistors and capacitors in the OFF state, can be easily implemented in commercial software packages.
