Recently, occurrences of chaos have been reported in many engineering systems and most of these occurrences are unfavorable phenomena which used to be controlled. This paper proposes two methods for the stabilization of arbitrary unstable periodic orbits embedded in chaos attractors existing in nonlinear discrete-time systems using nonlinear feedback. First, we propose a method based on a property of contraction mappings. Next, we propose another method using exact linearization via nonlinear feedback. In both methods, differentiability of the controlled systems is not required. Moreover, feedback need not be reconstructed in target periodic orbits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
