The paper collects the results of a survey performe d in 2010 aimed at analysing how high school studen ts in the province of Messina in Sicily (Italy) spend their t ime. Principally, is analyzed the interaction betwe en use of time, scholastic performance and time dedicated to study. So, we propose an estimation model for the d aily study-time of students. From a methodological point of view, using a two stage regression procedure to estimate self-rate performance (S rpe ) and time devoted to study (T stu ) allows to correct the estimates by simultaneity e f- fects between these variables. In the first stage, the self-rate performance at school is estimated in a reduced form and is used as a proxy of scholastic performance in the second step. Next, we run an ordinal regressio n in order to estimate the hours dedicated to study declared b y the student. The results obtained show that stude nts with a high expected value of study-time come from lyceum, they are mostly females, and tend to read more. Fu rther- more, they have satisfactory scholastic performance , are helped by their mothers when they do their ho mework, have a lower-than-average age difference with their mothers, but a higher-than-average age difference with their fathers. Drawing an analogy with industry concentration, a well-grounded measure of individual concentration (or specialization) of the use of time is presented. Equipped with this measure, we explain and provide evidence of a “division of leisure” effect on the organization of daily leisure activities. A demand model featuring subsistence daily leisure shows that the concentration of leisure can vary with the quantity of leisure available. Sequential moment conditions and the exogenous possibility of more leisure brought about by the weekend unveil an asymmetrically U-shaped response in a sample of employed German men.

This paper discusses methods that permit evaluating the degree of heterogeneity in the use of time. In particular, it is argue that scalar measures of multivariate scatter constitute a general means to assess the degree of withingroup time-use heterogeneity. The techniques are then illustrated by inquiring into the heterogeneity in the allocation of time of retired and employed older adults.

The flaws of the traditional time-budget approach are brought to light: time is not a constant flux and disregarding the social dimension of time and the significance of scheduling dismantles a great part of the phenomenon analyzed. The method proposed is inspired by Optimal Matching techniques but also informed by sociological theory: it relies on information about the collective rhythm. This method is further applied to French dual-earner couples in 1985 and 1998 (enquêtes Emploi du Temps, Insee, France, N=2574): twelve work arrangements are uncovered. Six of them refer to double full time schedules days, and two to feminine partially worked days. A significant proportion (20%) of the spouses who both worked a full time schedule experiences a high degree of desynchronization (greater than 50%). A few of them are even found to be completely desynchronized. Women who worked partially the day observed are also concerned by off-scheduling: though the probability of being desynchronized is reduced, a significant number of women work while their spouses are not working. Desynchronization dramatically increased between 1985 and 1998: more spouses work more desynchronized days but desynchronization also expands in most of the days. The increase observed is particularly prominent for couples where women work partial schedules.
