The article provides some insights into the results of a study conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement concerning the top ranking of the United States among nations in school retentivity and educational yield. Apparently, nations with school systems with the highest rates of retentivity or holding power do not suffer any loss in educational quality as far as the most able students are concerned, which then result to a high educational yield. Education quality was then compared in several countries including the United States, Japan, Sweden, France, England and the Netherlands, among others.

This article presents information on a study related to determination of the status and trends concerning the role and function of teacher aides in the U.S. A further objective of the study was to analyze the legally stated functions of aides in contrast to the functions generally regarded as being in the domain of teaching. The chief state school officer of each of the 50 states was asked to respond to a mail questionnaire concerning the legal status of teacher aides in terms of state statutes and regulations governing their duties, the development of policy statements or guidelines by state education departments defining and delimiting the duties of teacher aides and the role and function of teacher aides as perceived by state departments of education, whether or not laws or guidelines are in existence. All 50 states responded to the questionnaire. Although teacher aides are employed in virtually all of the states, laws pertaining to their employment and functions were in effect in only ten states. Eleven states had developed policies or guidelines. Twenty-nine states reported having no statutory provisions and no policies or guidelines for teacher aides, although seven states reported that statutes or guidelines are in the process of being developed.

CURRICULUM ,SCIENCE education ,CURRICULUM planning ,CURRICULUM-based assessment ,EDUCATIONAL change ,EDUCATION - Abstract
This article analyses the changes in the science curriculum. The change process defines the curriculum as the engagements of learners with aspects of the environment which have been planned under the direction of the school. The targets for change are the components or determiners of the curriculum: teachers, students, subject matter, methods, materials and facilities, and time. Change takes place in the cultural context of the school; indeed it seems to be increasingly brought about by influences from the culture. Concern with the science curriculum was a national, state, and community concern stemming from a larger concern involving American-Soviet relations. Thus a condition of national insecurity resulted in pressures for curricular change in science. The Educational Development Center (EDC) has received monies from the following donors--the National Science Foundation, the Agency for International Development, the Ford Foundation, the Peace Corps, and the Office of Education. By January of 1968 EDC had 10 curriculum development projects in operation and several more in prospect.
