The article describes the author's experiences assisting Hispanic immigrants manage change as their children enter school in Germantown, Maryland. The author discusses the importance of educators fostering and advancing a welcoming environment and school culture for Hispanic-American immigrants, whom the author says value the personal interaction prevalent within the Hispanic culture. The author lists several strategies for teachers and administrators, such as removing language barriers by increasing Spanish-speaking staff and offering English classes for immigrant parents, motivating parental involvement by maintaining Hispanic culture, and recognizing the aspirations Hispanic-American parents have for their children.
