In this article the author discusses aspects of how teacher preparation has changed in the last half of the 20th century. She believes that during this time, the U.S. has relied on high school students going to college and enrolling in a state-approved undergraduate teacher education program. Alternate teacher-certification programs are investigated as well as the lack of research on the effectiveness of one pathway into teaching over another on academic achievement.
