A seven-step model for developing, teaching, and evaluating social safety skills curricula for persons with intellectual disabilities is presented. The model is based on validated best practices, including those associated with ecological inventories, (near) errorless learning instructional procedures, and procedures for promoting generalization and maintenance of behavior change. Task analysis and backward chaining were used to teach four young adults with moderate mental disabilities basic first aid skills for simulated cuts, burns, and insect bites. Following training, students were able to apply skills to a nonhandicapped peer. Maintenance probes at 1 to 18 weeks posttraining indicated mixed results. The study, with four mildly retarded primary-age students, found that constant time delay was an effective instructional strategy when students were taught to read sight words and that incidental learning also occurred as each student acquired some nontargeted spelling information. (Author/DB)

This paper describes the parallel treatments design, a nested single subject experimental design that combines two concurrently implemented multiple probe designs, allows control for effects of extraneous variables through counterbalancing, and replicates its effects across behaviors. Procedural guidelines for the design's use and issues related to data analysis are discussed. (Author/PB)
