11. Suppression of Carbon Deposition on Ni Films by Redox Treatment of Ceria Substrates

Abstract

The carbon deposition behavior on Ni film supported on the two types of GDC, as-sintered and redox-processed, is investigated under dry 5% CH4at 800 oC for 1 h. Totally different carbon deposition behaviors were observed. Large amount of carbon was deposited on the Ni film supported on as-sintered GDC, while there is no carbon deposition on the Ni film supported on GDC with redox treatment. It seems that the redox treatment for GDC substrate plays an important role in suppressing the carbon deposition on Ni film, which would be related to high concentration of the oxygen vacancies on the GDC surface.

12. Degradation of LSCF Cathode Induced by SO2in Air

Abstract

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the most major impurities in air and it induces a performance degradation of SOFC cathodes. Our group has investigated the enforced degradation behaviors of (LaSr)(CoFe)O3(LSCF) cathodes by sulfur dioxide (SO2) containing air. It is clearly observed that SO2-induced degradation is affected by cell operation conditions, such as impurity concentration and the operating temperature. We observed two degradation steps; one is a rapid degradation rate occurring at an early stage and the other is a constant degradation with relatively slow rate. During progress of degradation, both ohmic resistance, Rohm, and oxygen reduction reaction resistance (polarization resistance), Rp, increased. There is a relationship between increasing rates of Rpand Rohmin each degradation step.

13. Degradation Mechanism of SOFC Cathodes under CrO3and SO2Impurity Exposures

Abstract

The effects of Cr-and S-impurities on the cathode performances were examined at the mixed ionic-electronic conducting La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3(LSCF) cathode. Under exposures to CrO3and SO2, the cathode performance decreased drastically by forming SrCrO4and SrSO4at the LSCF grain surfaces and electrochemical active sites. The main degradation factors of LSCF cathode was the decrease of surface reaction rates by the impurities. The Sr-diffusion and depletion in the LSCF structures can affect the cathode performance degradation. Relatively large amounts of Sr were depleted in the LSCF grains under CrO3exposures by forming a thick SrCrO4at the Pt-mesh/LSCF cathode interfaces, while small amounts of Sr-depletion in the LSCF grains under SO2exposures.
