This article presents information on published research related to economic and social changes in Great Britain during the early Middle Ages. Nowhere are these changes in research orientation more apparent than in studies of the early middle ages where wide-ranging investigations have produced a series of papers on rustic estates and their inhabitants, towns, industrial activity, and monetary-fiscal systems, each providing clear and incisive insights into the nature of the institutions within these sectors of the economy. Numerically predominant amongst these studies are those concerning the Anglo-Saxon estate. It was also sufficiently resilient to withstand continual changes in ownership. In the article, "Concubinage in Anglo-Saxon England" writer Margaret Ross suggests that the Church's attack on this early Anglo-Saxon institution was part of a general strategy aimed at increasing its land holdings. If the Church was successful in acquiring land by such means in the early Saxon period, however, it was, as others show, singularly incapable of holding on to it, particularly in the period of the Danish invasions.

This article explores the composition and geographies of individual wealth holding in England and Wales in the late nineteenth century. It draws on various forms of death duty records to determine the individual ownership of wealth including both personal property and real estate. By combining information on these different kinds of property, it is possible to explore how different strata of wealth holders accumulated specific forms of wealth at the time of their death. The article then examines how the composition of that wealth varied according to the wealth holder's location in the urban hierarchy and distance from London. It points out important geographical differences in both the scale and nature of wealth holding and raises questions about the implications of these findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article critically appraises the literary works of H. J. Dyos on urban history of Great Britain. Dyos's friends uniformly praise the catholicity of his interests and his lack of what David Cannadine calls "intellectual imperialism." Unlike other pioneers, G. Stedman Jones and R. Samuel remark, Dyos laid no claim to the territory he had marked out, but generously supported every kind of initiative". The same catholicity appeared in his public face. The agenda he presented to the 1966 Leicester conference omitted very little. The final paragraph in his introductory essay to "The Victorian City" grandly described cities as the "template for the whole structure of modern life." The city, he insisted, has set us the task of examining everything that has claimed to be permanent and essentially human in our heritage and systems of values. It is opined that it is difficult to interpret that paragraph literally. A spatial or institutional pattern at one moment obviously structures opportunities and costs at the next instant.

The article examines the mechanism of the land market in Lincolnshire, England in the eighteenth century. It describes the usual purchasers of land during the eighteenth century and discusses the social composition of the Lincolnshire land market. The factors which contributed to the demand for land in rural areas are identified. The article reports on the work of H.J. Habakkuk, which has illuminated the mechanism of the land market in eighteenth-century England and inspired the revival of interest in the structure of landed society.
