Many jurisdictions have put forward guidelines to identify sites at risks of soil degradation with the extraction of logging residues. Most guidelines are based on expert opinion and use the precautionary principle because of the lack of strong understanding of what makes a site sensitive to intensive biomass removal. Two main approaches are used: 1-identifying thresholds for specific site properties 2- developing nutrient budget indicators to rate the potential for nutrient deficit. Thanks to the development of digital soil mapping, it is becoming easier to develop maps for such indicators. A crucial question is the reliability of the different indicators. One way of evaluating their reliability is to test the coherence between the geographic locations of sites rated as sensitive by different indicators. In this study, we developed maps of key soil properties and of biogeochemical fluxes for the managed forest land of Canada at a resolution of 250 m. We used three site properties (slope, pH and sand content), as well as three nutrient budget indicators (N Budget, Base cation (BC) Budget and N Stability ratio) that were mapped and compared. The results indicated very little overlap between the areas identified as sensitive by the three site property indicators and very little concordance between sites rated as sensitive by site property indicators and those identified as sensitive by nutrient budget indicators while nutrient budget indicators showed coherence among themselves. Because nutrient budget indicators were found to be more dependent on the amount of nutrient extracted in the harvested biomass, than on the rates of nutrient inputs from the soil or the atmosphere, they tended to rate productive sites as sensitive, to the opposite of site property indicators. These results suggest that different indicators are assessing different processes and different aspects of site sensitivity. Because of the lack of coherence amongst the indicators, it is advisable 1) to use indicators based on the results of long-term monitoring plots, 2) to maintain such long-term observations and 3) to leave on the ground a substantial proportion of harvest residues, especially on sites evaluated as sensitive.

The increasing demand for forest biomass, notably from primary residues of harvested trees for the production of bioenergy, has raised concerns because of potential adverse effects on forest soil productivity. Our aim was to develop and validate spatially explicit planning indicators of site suitability for harvesting residue removal based on mapped forest site properties for four large case study areas located across Canada, each containing field studies on the impact of harvesting residue removal. Sustainability was assessed relative to the baseline scenario of conventional stem-only harvesting, to investigate the incremental effects of the removal of residues associated with whole-tree harvesting in typical operational conditions in Canada. Using information from scientific literature and guidelines from various jurisdictions, eleven planning indicators were developed, from which nine were related to the loss of soil fertility risk and two to erosion risk. Planning indicators were tested for redundancy and validated using response indicators of stand growth and nutrition from field studies. Several relationships between mapped soil properties and the empirical response of stands to harvesting residue removal were found. Planning indicators based on concentrations of organic C, total N and total P in the top 30 cm of the mineral soil best explained stand responses to harvesting residue removal. Despite caveats, the methodology used here demonstrates an approach for developing and empirically testing planning indicators of site suitability for harvesting residue removal. As more information on the impact of this practice becomes available from field studies, it can be used to refine and further validate the indicators.

A sustainable forest management system requires that a balance must be reached between ecosystem nutrient losses and gains in the course of a rotation. In order to determine the influence of stand characteristics (species composition, density, site potential productivity), method of forest harvesting (stem-only versus whole-tree) as well as rotation length on nutrient losses induced by biomass harvesting, a geochemical balance (nutrient inputs minus outputs) was computed from published information and forest inventory databases for the southern portion of the boreal forest of Quebec. Losses were compared with potential nutrient gains that varied according to soil types. We provided a tool for assessing the risk of having a negative nutrient budget (outputs>inputs) that forest managers can use with information that is already available to them. This exercise was conducted for five commercial tree species, namely paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.), jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), and black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), grouped into four site indexes and three stand density classes. Strong differences in nutrient exportation in biomass appeared between stands of different compositions as well as between stands of the same species but of different classes of productivity or density. The most nutrient-demanding tree species were trembling aspen and balsam fir. As expected, whole-tree harvesting caused a greater drain on nutrient reserves than stem-only harvesting, but this effect varied strongly with tree species and was greatest for balsam fir and lowest for jack pine. Harvesting the forest before or after the age of financial maturity, which might be desirable under some circumstances, generally created a lesser nutrient drain but this was at the expense of biomass production. Aspen was an exception to this rule showing a greater nutrient drain for stands harvested prior to the age of financial maturity. Implications for the development of indicators of sustainable forestry and for future research are discussed.
