• Literature review papers related to the tourism-energy nexus are analyzed. • Four main groups are identified considering the quantitative methodology used. • Topics and discussions on the nexus between tourism and energy are developed. • Future research is discussed. The high dependence of tourism activities on energy consumption, and particularly on non-renewable energy, is a major barrier to building sustainable tourism models. For this reason, the analysis of tourism and energy use is a growing field of study within sustainability debates. Despite this, there is a gap in the literature and, to the best of our knowledge, there is no previous study that critically reviews the vast literature on the energy-tourism nexus. This paper aims to fill this gap in tourism knowledge. The main objective of this article is to conduct a systematic review of scientific studies with a quantitative empirical basis that examine this nexus, trying to answer the following questions: What are the main methodologies used to approach the tourism-energy nexus? which indicators or variables are relevant?; is there a consensus on the results?; and what are the main lines of discussion on the use of energy in tourism? To this end, we particularly focus on the main methodologies, results and perspectives during the period 2001–2021. A total of 1,189 articles were reviewed by abstract and title, 236 were included for the full review and 163 were finally selected. The results show how the nexus and energy dependence of tourism is assessed mainly from four major methodological groups: G1) econometric models, regressions and other statistical methodologies (67% of the sample); G2) surveys, questionnaires and energy audits (15%); G3) Life Cycle Analysis (13%) and G4) other approaches and environmental impact indicators to assess the relationship between energy and tourism (5%). The analysis between the causal relationships between tourism development, economic growth, energy use, environmental degradation and energy efficiency of accommodations are the main issues evaluated, considering a wide range of indicators/variables. Based on the gaps and limitations found in the literature review on tourism and energy, it is discussed how some findings should be interpreted with caution due to their methodological approaches and differences. The Human Development Index (HDI) is one of the most widely used composite indicators of socio-economic development. However, the HDI is at the cross-roads. In order to retain its flagship role in the development arena, many scholars have called from the HDI to reinvent itself by adding sustainability dimensions. The aim of this paper is to introduce the Sustainable Human Development Index (SHDI), based on Multidimensional Synthesis of Indicators (MSI) – a new class of indexes that can be used for monitoring Sustainable Human Development (SHD). The approach we propose aims to address two primary issues regarding the HDI. The first issue involves the integration into the SHDI of two important sustainability-related dimensions that are missing in the HDI; namely, the environment and freedom (defined here in terms of political rights and civil liberties). The second issue focuses on the method of aggregation using the new class of indexes proposed. We aim to expand on the three standard HDI dimensions while avoiding problems associated with the geometric mean that tends to collapse to zero. In doing so, we manage to retain the same theoretical intuitions of the post-2010 HDI approach, i.e. to penalize the heterogeneity of outcomes. Moreover, we rely on the flexibility of the MSI approach to develop another index, the Environmentally-centered Sustainable Human Development Index (ESHDI), which puts the environmental dimension at the core of the analysis. In the first part of the paper we introduce the theoretical debate on the multidimensionality of the HDI, and consider the two new dimensions of sustainability, as well as the MSI aggregation approach. In the second part, the SHDI and the ESHDI are introduced, tested through a simulation analysis, and are compared with the HDI geometric mean using 2013 data. The simulations and the results of the empirical analysis show how the new class of indexes provide a more flexible approach to the procedure of aggregation, especially when the number of dimensions increases and/or when there is the need to stress the importance of one or more dimensions. The introduction of the two environmental and freedom sustainability dimensions greatly increases the potential of the HDI to address the SHD paradigm by capturing two core issues for the humanity and its common future. The fundamental differences between the dimensions of sustainable development have been identified by researchers and many assessment tools have been developed in several countries. This paper introduces the development of a methodology for determining the weight of each dimension employed in sustainable construction assessment through the use of assessment tools that use the Brazilian indicators of sustainable development in accordance with the Commission on Sustainable Development, and also through the utilization of a database provided by the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute (IBGE). Firstly, the Sustainability Panel tool was employed to reveal separately the status of dimensions in sustainable development (environmental, social and economic) and then it was made a statistical analysis of the results for each region in Brazil (north, northeast, midwest, southeast and south). The solution presented in this paper aims to reduce the inconsistencies found in the adjustments of the assessment tools considering regional differences based on political actions included in governmental agencies. European Union (EU) Member States have agreed to limit their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from sectors not covered by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, including emissions from agricultural sector. The aggregated GHG emission rate (i.e. t CO 2 eq. from agricultural sector per country) is commonly used to measure the overall size of agriculture’s influence on climate. And indeed, since 2005, EU has managed to decrease its aggregated GHG emissions by 3.1%. However, the question is—does that mean that EU’s agriculture has become less emission intensive? This paper answers the question by providing a different perspective for the assessment and comparison of the agricultural GHG emissions in 28 EU Member States. It is done by applying three different approaches, including creation of derived indicators and application of multi-criteria analysis (TOPSIS), which is a novel approach for comparison of agricultural GHG emission mitigation performance. The results show that each EU Member State performs very differently in emission intensities. Even more, the emission intensity results show an alarming tendency of increase in most of the EU Member States, which indicates that the measured changes in aggregate agricultural GHG emission rates are misleading. • This paper provides a comprehensive conceptual analysis of disaster resilience in climate-vulnerable communities. • The research employs the Walker and Avant Method to elucidate the notion of resilience within the framework of climate vulnerability. • A practical framework and a set of ecological indicators are proposed for environmental impact assessments in disaster resilience. • The research provides tangible illustrations of the proposed approaches and indicators in practical contexts. Resilience is a prior term of debate in vulnerability research irrespective of discipline. Nowadays the resilience concept has been used abnormally in many cases without realizing its intended meaning. Therefore, this study clarifies the resilience concept in the context of climate vulnerability. An integrated review of the literature has been done by the PRISMA approach to identify the most relevant documents. Besides Walker and Avant Method has been used to analyze the concept of resilience. The use of concept in different disciplines, historical perspectives, dimensions, attributes, consequences, and relationship with vulnerability and adaptability have been reviewed to clarify it. This study also provides a theoretical and workable definition of resilience from the perspective of climate change and natural hazards. A conceptual framework has been developed with concept mapping, contributing to the existing debate on resilience study. A case analysis has been done by focusing on a climate-vulnerable community living in the riverine islands in Bangladesh. This article shows that socio-ecological systems approach to defining small island disaster resilience has shortcomings. Additionally, the research-policy divide in resilience studies is exacerbated by the paucity of studies that use the participatory approach to identify disaster resilience indicators. The study makes a compelling case for further research on how to turn academic discoveries into a resource that might benefit local people, particularly those on small islands. Performance indicators (PIs) are essential in the benchmarking process used to rate and rank water companies. However, a set of individual PIs does not provide a holistic assessment of company performance from multiple perspectives. A multidimensional evaluation of the performance of water companies can be achieved by aggregating the PIs into a synthetic indicator. Although the concept of sustainability involves economic, environmental and social criteria, most of the previous studies have not considered these three dimensions simultaneously. This paper discusses a process of indicator aggregation using two approaches based on multi-criteria decision analysis to evaluate and compare the sustainability of water companies from a holistic perspective. A synthetic indicator embracing economic, environmental and social PIs was computed for a sample of 154 Portuguese water companies. Both methods yielded similar rankings of water company sustainability. The techniques and results presented in this paper may be utilized as a means of improving the benchmarking process in regulated water industries, as well as providing valuable contributions to decision-makers on the most efficient steps for improving the sustainability of urban water services. Understanding the interactions between ecosystems and their underlying environmental constraints, the services which they provide, and the people benefiting from those services, are essential for the effective management and sustainability of socio-ecosystems (ecosystems which support and are impacted upon by humans). Ecosystem service (ES) indicators attempt to provide a means of measuring service provision, but the scale at which they are developed is likely to impact on how they can be used to influence the effective management of socio-ecosystems. This paper compares science and practice in the development of service measures at contrasting scales in: (a) an active research project, focused on local catchment management to improve water quality at Loweswater in the English Lake District, and (b) a science-based study developing national scale indicators of water quality using the Countryside Survey dataset. The paper explores different approaches taken towards the production of ecological measures, which inform on either single or multiple ES delivery across the land/water interface, dependent on scale. It considers how scale impacts on the process of gathering data and on the types of data which can contribute to ES indicators. It further reflects on how service indicators representing different scales of study may be used and by whom. Local scales, in this case the catchment scale, provide a valuable socio-ecological unit for exploring ES delivery, but the extent to which ecosystem service indicators may be used by local actors is uncertain. Larger scale studies may be confined to single services by virtue of data availability but can provide useful policy tools for targeting action. The paper concludes that ‘scale’ is an important consideration when developing ES indicators. The economic and environmental sustainability of beef cattle from pasture use and preservation in specific biomes is still not well evaluated. In this context, the study of the feasibility of beef production in the Pampa biome stands out because of its relevance in southern Brazil. Thus, this paper aims not only to know the amount of greenhouse gases emitted in different feeding management systems of beef cattle, but also to evaluate the economic and environmental feasibility of that production. Seven typical production systems in the region were considered, and it was aimed to determine which one would be the most viable in the environmental and economic perspective. To achieve this aim, the paper was developed in two stages: the first considers greenhouse gases emissions calculation in all systems and; the second uses some investment analysis tools, such as the net present value (NPV), the internal rate of return (IRR) and the annualized profitability index (API). According to the results obtained from system production VII it is possible to optimize low greenhouse gases emission of beef production with a significant economic return, under certain feed conditions. Furthermore, the results verified from system production II it is possible to obtain beef production increases without the need of new livestock areas, and contribute to the proper use and preservation of the Pampa biome. Abstract: For a better understanding of human demand on the biosphere's capacity to assimilate wastes, this paper introduces a new footprint-based indicator, which is named the ‘Waste Absorption Footprint’ (WAF). The proposal of the WAF is inspired by the idea of building footprints on nature's multiple ecological functions. Within this framework, the WAF is built upon the waste absorptive capacity of the land and water area. This methodological approach is not confined to a particular waste product, but is able to include a variety of wastes generated by human activities. With this method anthropogenic emissions of wastes are translated into absorptive land and water areas. The results can be expressed in units of average hectares by scaling different land-use types in proportion to their relative absorptive capacity. The utility of the ecological footprint in sustainability evaluation can be greatly strengthened by combining the WAF to fully capture environmental effects induced by anthropogenic emissions of wastes. Abstract: Studies on fate and toxicity are important aspects in environmental impact assessments of chemicals. In order to elucidate “what is worst” a ranking of the chemicals under investigation is of significant interest, which obviously constitutes a multi-indicator system (MIS). Partial order methodologies turn out to be advantageous tools for analyses of such systems. In the present paper we focus on QSAR generated fate and toxicity indicators of 30 chemicals, comprising of a variety of chemical structures. In many risk assessment studies the level of a multi-indicator system is abandoned and the data are aggregated in order to obtain a composite index. However, such aggregation techniques are far from being trivial. The present paper describes an alternative strategy to handle MIS, i.e., applying partial order methodology leading to useful information. The paper demonstrate how partial order techniques lead to a weak order of the 30 chemicals as well as to the relative importance of the single indicators included in the study. Specifically, the paper addresses the topics on the “relations between the indicators” and “do chemical structures constitute a valid basis for ranking chemicals according to their environmental impact?”. Abstract: Quality of life is a multi-dimensional concept and it is essentially subjective even if we can often find objectively measurable proxies for it. High levels of quality of life are the results of the interplay of social, economic and environmental aspects that together make people satisfied with their life. People living in small islands can enhance their quality of life through appropriate programs that guarantee the conservation of natural capital, provided by ecosystems, and networks and norms that facilitate good governance and social cohesion. In this paper an integration of natural and social capital subjectively evaluated by people living in Vulcano Island (Sicily Region, Italy) is proposed as a first approximation of the perception of quality of life. This paper explores whether there are differences in such perception between permanent and seasonal residents, who live there only for tourist economic reasons. Results show that the perception of natural capital is high in both communities, while social capital and the quality of life is less perceived by seasonal respect to permanent residents. The results of this research highlight that natural capital and social capital, taken into account independently, provide only a partial vision of quality of life that is strongly dependent on the combination of both. In this respect, a list of potential subjective social–environmental indicators useful to assess the quality of life is proposed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The evaluation of landscape services essentially deals with the complex and dynamic relationships between humans and their environment. When it comes to landscape management and the evaluation of the benefits these services provide for our well-being, there is a limited representation of stakeholder and intangible values on the land. Stakeholder knowledge is essential, since disciplinary expert evaluations and existing proxy data on landscape services can reveal little of the landscape benefits to the local stakeholders. This paper aims at evaluating the potential of using local stakeholders as key informants in the spatial assessment of landscape service indicators. A methodological approach is applied in the context of a rural village environment in Tanzania, Zanzibar, where local, spatially sensitive stakeholder knowledge is crucial in solving land management challenges as the resources are used extensively for supporting community livelihoods and are threatened by economic uses and agricultural expansion. A typology of 19 different material and non-material, cultural landscape service indicators is established and, in semi-structured interviews, community stakeholders map these indicators individually on an aerial image. The landscape service indicators are described and spatially analysed in order to establish an understanding of landscape level service structures, patterns and relationships. The results show that community involvement and participatory mapping enhance the assessment of landscape services. These benefits from nature demonstrate spatial clustering and co-existence, but simultaneously also a tendency for spatial dispersion, and suggest that there is far more heterogeneity and sensitivity in the ways the benefits are distributed in relation to actual land resources. Many material landscape service indicators are individually based and spatially scattered in the landscape. However, the well-being of communities is also dependent on the non-material services, pointing out shared places of social interaction and cultural traditions. Both material and non-material services are preferred closest to settlements where the highest intensity, richness and diversity are found. Based on the results, the paper discusses the role of local stakeholders as experts in landscape service assessments and implications for local level management processes. It can be pointed out that the integration of participatory mapping methods in landscape service assessments is crucial for true collaborative, bottom-up landscape management. It is also necessary in order to capture the non-utilitarian value of landscapes and sensitivity to cultural landscape services, which many expert evaluations of landscape or ecosystem services fail to do justice. Abstract: In recent years, attempts have been made to develop an integrated Footprint approach for the assessment of the environmental impacts of production and consumption. In this paper, we provide for the first time a definition of the “Footprint Family” as a suite of indicators to track human pressure on the planet and under different angles. This work has been developed under the 7th Framework Programme in the European Commission (EC) funded One Planet Economy Network: Europe (OPEN:EU) project. It builds on the premise that no single indicator per se is able to comprehensively monitor human impact on the environment, but indicators rather need to be used and interpreted jointly. A description of the research question, rationale and methodology of the Ecological, Carbon and Water Footprint is first provided. Similarities and differences among the three indicators are then highlighted to show how these indicators overlap, interact, and complement each other. The paper concludes by defining the “Footprint Family” of indicators and outlining its appropriate policy use for the European Union (EU). We believe this paper can be of high interest for both policy makers and researchers in the field of ecological indicators, as it brings clarity on most of the misconceptions and misunderstanding around Footprint indicators, their accounting frameworks, messages, and range of application. Abstract Cities supply their material needs from various sources, located not only in their nearby region, but also from other places around the world. Consequently, they have significant environmental impact in those areas. 'Urban metabolism' is a leading research approach, which advances urban analysis by attempting to quantify the amount of materials and energy that flow through a city. In recent years, this tool has been used widely, but there have been no prior metabolism studies that attempt to locate and quantify the resources and waste flows to and from a city on the local, regional and global scales. The goal of this paper is to present such an approach to urban metabolism, as a means to advance urban sustainability. The manuscript focuses on the city of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Israel. It analyzes the overall urban metabolism and identifies the routes followed by the material supplies used by the city and its environmental impact on several spatial scales – local, regional and global. Overall the city of Tel Aviv-Jaffa relies on direct and indirect use of approximately 3600 kt of materials a year out of which approximately 47% are imported. Abstract Extreme weather events have been affecting local environmental sustainability. Previous literature in this field evaluates environmental sustainability based mainly on past and current resource consumption and availability, however, knowledge about the status and potential changes of environmental sustainability under future climate extremes is missing. This paper proposes an integrated approach (combining the Ecological Footprint Analysis with econometric regressions) to predict future environmental sustainability under different climate scenarios. Based on the case study of the U.S. Rio Grande Basin, the results show that this region has been sustainable in 1982–2012, although sustainability levels have been declining over time. In addition, projections for the future show that the entire region will most likely move away from sustainability by the end of this century under the high emission scenario (e.g., RCP8.5). These findings are relevant for sustainable resource management and allocation of local environmental resources as well as for decision-making support regarding climate risk adaptation and mitigation strategies. In this paper we draw on a unique dataset of hydrological and microbiological time series to apply water footprint (WF) methodology to quantify the environmental impact of cattle grazing on karst area in a regional park of the southern Apennines (Italy). The use of WF methodology in the same specific environment where relevant data are monitored, and the hydrogeological and microbiological characterisation of the study area, validate the results of our WF assessment, that can be summarised as follows. First, we show that an ecological indicator such as the grey water footprint (GWF) may be of particular relevance to the park authority to implement policies to preserve groundwater quality. Second, we introduce a new metric, referred to as the environment-related grey water footprint (GWF env ), to estimate the virtual water needed to absorb the microbial pollution of a cattle grazing process. The Land Use Suitability (LUS) concept informs decision-making by providing stakeholders with integrated information about the economic, environmental, social and cultural consequences of land use choices. This paper addresses an application of the LUS concept: evaluating the suitability of land for sustained productivity subject to environmental constraints, as defined by water quality objectives. We refer to this application of the LUS concept as ‘Productivity within Environmental Constraints’ (PEC). A PEC assessment uses three indicators to evaluate land-water systems: 1) productive potential, describing the inherent productive and economic potential of land parcel s ; 2) relative contribution, describing the potential for a land parcel to contribute contaminants (relative to other land parcels) to downstream receiving environments; and 3) pressure, describing the contaminant load delivered to a receiving environment compared to the load that ensures that environmental objectives are met. The three indicators can be expressed categorically, mapped at catchment to national scales, and used to support strategic land assessments and plan land development and investment. China is in a stage of rapid new urbanization, carbon emissions in regions the urbanization stages of which are different exhibit different characteristics. Based on the environmental Kuznets Curve, this paper calculates the carbon emissions of 32 provinces in China over 1978–2014 by IPCC. Using the Auto-regression Distributed Lag Model, we analyze the three-stage dynamic relationship between carbon emissions and urbanization rate in different city groups. And the influence of energy intensity and energy structure on this relationship is analyzed. Our finding shows that: The relationship between urbanization rate and carbon emissions is a three-stage dynamic relationship. In the provinces of Cluster 1 where the proportion of the service industry is the most and the urbanization rate is high, the shape of the three-stage curve is positive increase, positive decrease and negative increase; In the provinces of Cluster 2 which mainly depend on the manufacturing industry and have medium urbanization rate, the shape of the three-stage curve is positive decrease, positive increase and negative increase; In the provinces of Cluster 3 which mainly rely on the tourism industry and the husbandry industry and have lower urbanization rate, the shape of the three-stage curve is positive increase, positive increase and negative decrease. The decreasing effect of energy intensity on the carbon emissions is different significantly under different urbanization stages, and the decreasing effect is significant in the provinces of Cluster 1. The decreasing effect that energy structure has on carbon emissions is not significant, because the fossil fuels-dominated energy structure remains unchanged in China. Eco-efficiency is an indicator that is tied to economic activities and ecology; it serves as a useful instrument for sustainability analysis. Based on a panel data set for the period 2005–2014, this paper estimated the eco-efficiency of 21 cities in Guangdong province, China by applying a super-slack-based measure (Super-SBM) model that considers undesirable output indicators and a Topsis model. Using a panel data model with fixed effects, the influencing factors on eco-efficiency were also explored. The results indicate that during the study period, the three indexes—resource inputs (RI), economic benefits (EB) and environmental impacts (EI)—showed obvious spatiotemporal differentiation with high values mainly being located in the core region of Guangdong (the Pearl River Delta, PRD) and low values being primarily distributed in the northern area of the province. Influenced by inputs and outputs, the eco-efficiency presented significant disparities among four areas and 21 cities. The highest eco-efficiency was in the eastern area and then in the PRD, areas whose eco-efficiency averaged around 1.16 and 1.10, respectively, while the north had the lowest value, averaging below 1.00. Regional disparity was found to increase and spatial autocorrelation to decrease gradually between 2005 and 2014. The results of the panel data analysis indicate that technical innovation had the greatest positive influence on eco-efficiency, followed by government regulation, openness and population density. Conversely, land-use intensity was identified as the main inhibiting factor among the negative influencing factors, which also included industrial structure and per capita GDP. Interestingly, the study found that a high level of per capita GDP would not necessarily lead to high eco-efficiency. Floodplains are highly diverse landscape elements within river systems and among the most endangered ecosystems worldwide. In this paper we complement indices developed to assess the ecological status of floodplain systems, compliant with the EU Water Framework Directive, to an overall “Benthic Invertebrate Floodplain Index” (BIFI). With the addition of taxa (mainly oligochaetes, chironomidae and amphipoda) to the floodplain index (FI), caddisfly (CHI), and dragon fly (OHI) indices a new extended BIFI can be calculated. We provide values for the calculation of the index derived from a comprehensive dataset of Austrian floodplain waters complemented by literature data. Values are given for those taxonomic groups which are abundant in the Austrian Danube and determinable in reasonable time. The new index was compared to published floodplain indices and tested with an independent data set at two floodplain segments along the Austrian Danube. The newly classified benthic invertebrates (NCBI) showed a good performance in comparison to the so far published indices and extend these to a better coverage of dynamic water bodies. Further the inclusion of abundant and species rich taxa improves the robustness of calculated values already with a low sampling effort. Altogether it is a promising tool for the integrated assessment of the ecological status of river-floodplain systems according to the EU Water Framework Directive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For typical two-layer wetland flows where wind occurs frequently, indicators for flow and contaminant dispersion with wind effect are considered in this paper. Based on the general formulation for porous media flows, the velocity distribution of a fully developed flow through a wetland is illustrated, with that for a single-layer wetland flow under wind recovered as a special case. And the contrary wind of high speed might result in the appearance of an inverse-flow layer. For the more complex case of a two-layer wetland flow under wind, the more simplified method of asymptotic analysis is adopted instead of Aris's method of concentration moments to determine the dispersivity in terms of the longitudinal evolution of the depth-averaged concentration. And it is illustrated with the effect of dimensionless parameters. The velocity profile and environmental dispersivity for the two-layer wetland flow in the absence of wind can be included as a limiting case. Both the direction and the strength of the wind can affect the environmental dispersivity considerably under long-term evolution. Analytical solutions for the mean concentration and the region influenced by the contaminant cloud are derived. And for the instantaneous emission of typical contaminant constituents, the related indicators for water quality assessment, such as the critical length and duration of the influenced region are illustrated. A large accumulation of carbon dioxide emission have attracted much attention recently. The existing researches mainly focused on such impact factors of carbon dioxide emission as population, economy, technology and others. However, there is little specific guidance for the subdivision of demographic factors. This paper employed STIRPAT (Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence and Technology) model to examine the impact of population size, per capita consumption, energy intensity, urbanization and aging population on CO 2 emissions by adopting panel data of 30 provinces from 1997 to 2012. Taking the climate change as a control variable, we can get the result that the population size, per capita consumption and energy intensity have strong explanatory power on CO 2 emissions in the three regions. The urbanization level has a positive influence on carbon emissions in the western region and has a negative effect in the central region, while it is not statistically significant in the eastern region. The conflict between economic growth and the environment is complex and sharper today than ever before. Indeed, the relationship between economic growth and the sustainability of ecosystems has been extensively discussed in the literature, but the results remain controversial. This paper reviews the use of single and composite indicators of environmental damage and questions whether the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis sufficiently mirrors the relationship between economic growth and ecological damage. Ecological Indicators are relevant when they potentially inform society about ecological developments in a reliable way. We use the modified composite index of environmental performance ( mCIEP ) to measure environmental damage, and GDP per capita to represent economic growth. The econometric model is developed using panel data composed of 152 countries and a period of 6 years. The model is estimated for the full sample, for three different sets of countries, by level of development, and a decomposition analysis is carried out, which corresponds to the study of the CIEP individual dimensions. Our results reveal that, at present, the EKC hypothesis is not proved. We conclude that it is critical to be clear that economic growth alone is not enough to improve environmental quality. Therefore, creating a consistent, coherent and effective environmental policy framework is essential in order to improve environmental quality that supports wellbeing and enables long-term economic development. The rainfall regime is one of the main abiotic components that can cause modifications in the breeding activity of animal species. It has a direct effect on the environmental conditions, and acts as a modifier of the landscape and soundscape. Variations in water quality and acidity, flooding, erosion, and sound distortion are usually related with the presence of rain. Thereby, ecological studies in populations and communities would benefit from improvements in the estimation of rainfall patterns throughout space and time. In this paper, a method for automatic detection of rainfall in forests by using acoustic recordings is proposed. This approach is based on the estimation of the mean value and signal to noise ratio of the power spectral density in the frequency band in which the sound of the raindrops falling over the vegetation layers of the forest is more prominent (i.e. 600–1200 Hz). The results of this method were compared with human auditory identification and data provided by a pluviometer. We achieved a correlation of 95.23% between the data provided by the pluviometer and the predictions of a regression model. Furthermore, we attained a general accuracy between 92.90% and 99.98% when identifying different intensity levels of rainfall on recordings. Nowadays, passive monitoring recorders have been extensively used to study of acoustic-based breeding processes of several animal species. Our method uses the signals acquired by these recorders in order to identify and quantify rainfall events in short and long time spans. The number of protected areas (PAs) has steadily increased in the past 20 years, but their effectiveness to meet conservation targets is consistently questioned. Most conservation impact evaluations of protected areas assume that formal designations, like that of IUCN categories, reflect site-specific conservation rules, but this is not always true. In this paper we illustrate how conservation rules could be empirically assessed by use of content analysis combined with optimal scaling. This flexible methodology allows us to quantitatively assess strictness levels for use in conservation impact evaluations. The strictness measures could also indicate whether conservation rules are consistently applied in the different IUCN categories thereby providing guidance for future assignment of PAs to the IUCN protected area management categories. We illustrate how policy indicators based on conservation rules could be developed in two contrasting mountain protected area networks in Norway and in British Columbia (BC), including a total of 48 PAs in Norway and 51 in BC. Conservation rules for recreational use, motorized access and resource use were quantitatively assessed, thus providing a measure of how strictly PAs regulate the different human activities. Our results show that the main differences in strictness are between the two countries, followed by the contrast between national parks and provincial parks in BC. Overall, Norway has a more liberal conservation policy than BC and older national parks in BC have a much stricter conservation policy than most of the other PAs in this study. Overarching conservation objectives did not reflect the level of strictness (the conservation rules) that guide the daily management of individual PAs. This applies to both countries. We recommend to empirically investigate site-specific conservation rules to include de facto management of human activities in conservation policy impact evaluations. The methodology is also useful for monitoring downgrading of the protected area status, which is a result of authorizing human activities that are not consistent with conservation objectives. The relationship between sustainability and happiness is an intriguing and growing research area (Cloutier et al., 2013; Montgomery, 2013; Florida et al., 2013; Leyden et al., 2011). However, a review of primary literature and research indicates a missing gap in neighborhood level assessments of sustainability and happiness. The Sustainable Neighborhoods for Happiness Index (SNHI) was developed using city level data and studies (Cloutier et al., 2014), but was created with the intent of serving as a neighborhood measure. Within this paper, we detail the development of the Sustainable Neighborhoods for Happiness (SNfH) Decision Tool – a neighborhood level assessment tool, derived from the SNHI, to assist in decisions around future strategies for sustainable community development. While several sustainability decision tools exist, there is a need for those that are easily understood and accessible to neighborhood stakeholders (e.g., residents, community leaders, city employees). The SNfH Decision Tool was created with a user-friendly graphical front-end and embedded back-end calculations to inform users. Observed meteorological data demonstrates that temperature has increased by 0.74 °C in the last hundred years with the bulk of the warming occurring in the last 50 years. This paper examines the impact of climate change on five major crops in the former state of Andhra Pradesh using district level panel data for the period 1981–2010. Analysis of data shows that crop yields are significantly impacted by climate for rice, tobacco and groundnut. Crops grown in rabi are more susceptible to changes in climate than those in kharif, while drought crops like jowar are found to withstand changes in climate better than others. The term “landscape harmony” (LH) is relatively rarely used in literature. Semantically similar expressions, such as landscape coherence, unity, or sparse integrity are used more frequently. The LH index has been applied in the scope of the following concepts: (1) scenic beauty analysis, where LH describes the characteristic of perceived landscape; and (2) the ecological aspect, where LH refers to the mutual relationship between various abiotic and biotic landscape components. The objective of this paper is to introduce a new quantitative index describing LH combining both of the concepts. The basis for the index development is the assumption that landscape is harmonious by nature, both from the visual and ecological point of view. Therefore, any indicator attempting to reflect landscape harmony in fact measures the level of its disharmony. That is why the manuscript presents the Index of Landscape Disharmony (ILDH) measuring the impact of different factors (elements) affecting the unity of landscape. The index ranged from 0 to 3 (ILDH = 0 means fully harmonious landscape and ILDH = 3 means extremely disharmonious landscape). It involves the following three variables: (1) land type; (2) shape of objects; and (3) form and colour harmony. The index was applied in relation to 24 test areas representing different types of landscape scenes. The study results showed that the level of anthropogenic transformation does not have to negatively affect landscape harmony. Its impact depends on the coherence with landscape type and quality of man-made objects. The study also shows that LH, even if an indicator is applied, cannot be fully presented in an objective manner. The novelty of the research derives from the fact that this is the first index to be introduced combining aesthetic and ecological assessment of LH, possible to be calculated for natural, rural, and built up areas. Impacts of human civilization on ecosystems threaten global biodiversity. In a changing environment, traditional in situ approaches to biodiversity monitoring have made significant steps forward to quantify and evaluate BD at many scales but still, these methods are limited to comparatively small areas. Earth observation (EO) techniques may provide a solution to overcome this shortcoming by measuring entities of interest at different spatial and temporal scales. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the role of EO to detect, describe, explain, predict and assess biodiversity. Here, we focus on three main aspects related to biodiversity − taxonomic diversity, functional diversity and structural diversity, which integrate different levels of organization − molecular, genetic, individual, species, populations, communities, biomes, ecosystems and landscapes. In particular, we discuss the recording of taxonomic elements of biodiversity through the identification of animal and plant species. We highlight the importance of the spectral traits (ST) and spectral trait variations (STV) concept for EO-based biodiversity research. Furthermore we provide examples of spectral traits/spectral trait variations used in EO applications for quantifying taxonomic diversity, functional diversity and structural diversity. We discuss the use of EO to monitor biodiversity and habitat quality using different remote-sensing techniques. Finally, we suggest specifically important steps for a better integration of EO in biodiversity research. EO methods represent an affordable, repeatable and comparable method for measuring, describing, explaining and modelling taxonomic, functional and structural diversity. Upcoming sensor developments will provide opportunities to quantify spectral traits, currently not detectable with EO, and will surely help to describe biodiversity in more detail. Therefore, new concepts are needed to tightly integrate EO sensor networks with the identification of biodiversity. In the context of the System for Environmental-Economic Accounting, biodiversity accounting is being developed as a tool to monitor and increase the understanding of human impacts on biodiversity. Biodiversity accounting aims to structurally measure, monitor and map changes in multiple biodiversity components, as an integral part of a larger system of ecosystem accounts. Both indicators relevant for ecosystem functioning and indicators that reflect the non-use values of biodiversity can be included in biodiversity accounting. In this paper we focus on the latter, and we test the potential applicability of a set of species indicators for developing a biodiversity account in Limburg province, the Netherlands. In particular, we map and analyse a range of indicators reflecting species richness, the presence of rare and threatened species and species diversity. We test spatial correlation to identify the minimum set of indicators that would need to be included in the account. We also evaluate individual indicators using eight different criteria. We show that, in Limburg province, a set of indicators covering at least five species groups is required, and that it would be most meaningful to have indicators reflecting the occurrence of threatened species. However, data availability as well as the most suitable set of indicators are likely to differ between areas, and case studies in other countries are required to support the selection of indicators for biodiversity accounting in an international framework. The present study focuses on the importance and need to identify criteria and indicators (C&I) for sustainable landscaping using native plants in Qatar. The conditions for operationalizing the criteria and indicators approach are being incorporated into sustainable development practices and management planning in Qatar. This paper aims to develop criteria and related indicators for strengthening the global sustainability assessment system (GSAS) in order to provide a holistic approach for sustainable environmental assessment and the enhancement of ecosystem services. A total of 50 potentially native plant species were prioritized and categorized based on the following different parameters: weather conditions tolerated (temperature, humidity, and rainfall), multiple use value (ecological, economical, and medicinal), standard crown size (≤50 cm and ≥50 cm) and water requirement (moist, moderate, and dry). Diverse local stakeholders as well as international experts were consulted to rank the plant species, and concluded that these prioritized native species are fit for sustainable landscaping as opposed to the exotic plant species which are imported from different geo-climatic zones. Environmental, social, economic, human, and policy sustainability aspects were considered, along with 12 criteria and 49 related indicators which were identified by promoting the use of potential native plants for sustainable landscaping in Qatar. The increase in global warming, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions has gained attention in various regions. In Malaysia, the government announced a voluntary commitment to reduce 40% of CO 2 emissions by 2020 and to refurbish 100 government buildings. Existing buildings make a large contribution to energy consumption and CO 2 emissions, therefore refurbishing existing buildings is an essential strategy to achieve the commitment. There is no single assessment scheme for building refurbishment in Malaysia and hence, this study aims to develop a comprehensive list of assessment themes and sub-themes for building refurbishment purposes. It examines and compares 10 assessment schemes from various countries: BREEAM, LEED, CASBEE, BEAM Plus, GBLS, Green Star, HQE, Green Mark, GBI and MyCrest. The findings revealed fourteen themes that were considered for assessment: management , sustainable site , transport , indoor environmental quality ( IEQ ), water , waste , material , energy , pollution , innovation , economic , social , culture and quality of services . Energy and IEQ are dominant themes in all assessment schemes. Most of the schemes are considered relatively weak in evaluating economic and social aspects, in comparison to environmental aspects. The assessment of quality of services is overlooked in most of the schemes, including GBI and MyCrest in Malaysia. Outcomes from this paper will form the baseline for a new environmental assessment scheme that aimed at non-domestic building refurbishments in Malaysia. Different Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) methods have been developed over the past twenty years. While the use of a single score indicator may, on the one hand, ease the decision making it may also induce a loss of information. On the other hand, the use of a large set of environmental indicators may increase the difficulty of decision making due to the high number of parameters. In this paper, a statistical methodology is used to identify a simplified set of environmental indicators. This methodology applies Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to five LCIA methods (CML’01, Eco-indicator99, IMPACT 2002+, ecological scarcity, EPD) using a building products database. For each method, the results show that only 4–6 dimensions are sufficient to explain at least 90–95% of the variance for each set of indicators. They refer to the following environmental themes: fossil-fuel consumption, ecotoxicity, ionising radiation, land use and mineral resources. The use of a selected set of five LCI flows is found to be as relevant as current LCIA methods from a statistical point of view. Furthermore, PCA applied to a building LCA case study shows similar trends as for the database results. Further studies are now needed to confirm these findings for going towards simplified structural relationships among LCIA indicators for building materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building construction is one of the largest final consumers of environmental resources as well as one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gas and other pollution. This paper aims to propose ecological indicators for green building construction by applying a slack-based data envelop analysis approach, in which resource conservation and environmental protection are both incorporated. We conduct an empirical analysis of ecological indicators for green building construction using China's regional panel dataset during 1995–2012, and use the analysis to further discuss the technological gaps across the regions. The findings show that: (i) half of China's provinces have a substantial potential increase of more than 60% in ecological performance for green building construction; (ii) the developed areas perform better than the developing areas; (iii) the 11th five-year plan period is a turning point for China's green building construction and development as the policies for green construction have significant effects. Decreasing the environmental impact, increasing the degree of social responsibility, and considering the economic motivations of organizations are three significant features in designing a reverse logistics network under sustainability respects. Developing a model, which can simultaneously consider these environmental, social, and economic aspects and their indicators, is an important problem for both researchers and practitioners. In this paper, we try to address this comprehensive approach by using indicators for measurement of aforementioned aspects and by applying fuzzy mathematical programming to design a multi-echelon multi-period multi-objective model for a sustainable reverse logistics network. To reflect all aspects of sustainability, we try to minimize the present value of costs, as well as environmental impacts, and optimize the social responsibility as objective functions of the model. In order to deal with uncertain parameters, fuzzy mathematical programming is used, and to obtain solutions on Pareto front, a customized multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm is applied. The validity of the proposed solution procedure has been analyzed in small and large size test problems based on four comparison metrics and computational time using analysis of variance. Finally, in order to indicate the applicability of the suggested model and the practicality of the proposed solution procedure, the model has been implemented in a medical syringe recycling system. The results reveal that the suggested MOPSO algorithm overtakes epsilon-constraint method from the aspects of quality of the solutions as well as computational time. Proper use of the proposed process could help managers efficiently manage the flow of recycled products with regard to environmental and social considerations, and the process offers a sustainable competitive advantage to corporations. The water footprint (WF) has been developed within the water resources research community as a volumetric measure of freshwater appropriation. The concept is used to assess water use along supply chains, sustainability of water use within river basins, efficiency of water use, equitability of water allocation and dependency on water in the supply chain. With the purpose of integrating the WF in life cycle assessment of products, LCA scholars have proposed to weight the original volumetric WF by the water scarcity in the catchment where the WF is located, thus obtaining a water-scarcity weighted WF that reflects the potential local environmental impact of water consumption. This paper provides an elaborate critique on this proposal. The main points are: (1) counting litres of water use differently based on the level of local water scarcity obscures the actual debate about water scarcity, which is about allocating water resources to competing uses and depletion at a global scale; (2) the neglect of green water consumption ignores the fact that green water is scarce as well; (3) since water scarcity in a catchment increases with growing overall water consumption in the catchment, multiplication of the consumptive water use of a specific process or activity with water scarcity implies that the resultant weighted WF of a process or activity will be affected by the WFs of other processes or activities, which cannot be the purpose of an environmental performance indicator; (4) the LCA treatment of the WF is inconsistent with how other environmental footprints are defined; and (5) the Water Stress Index, the most cited water scarcity metric in the LCA community, lacks meaningful physical interpretation. It is proposed to incorporate the topic of freshwater scarcity in LCA as a “natural resource depletion” category, considering depletion from a global perspective. Since global freshwater demand is growing while global freshwater availability is limited, it is key to measure the comparative claim of different products on the globe's limited accessible and usable freshwater flows. The annual growth of hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico is largely attributed to agricultural nutrient loadings that originate from the Mississippi/Atchafalaya River Basin (MARB). To effectively target conservation efforts throughout the entire MARB in order to reduce Gulf hypoxia, strategies to rank areas according to their impact on both agricultural production and ecosystem services are extremely important. In this paper, we utilize an Environmental Performance Index (EPI) to rank regions within the MARB according to their environmental performance, that is, their ability to produce agricultural outputs while minimizing nutrient loadings to the Gulf of Mexico. We compare our index rankings to previously used rankings of delivered yields alone and find the spatial distribution of rankings changes considerably when accounting for agricultural productivity. For example, the Corn Belt regions of central Iowa and northern Illinois no longer make up the lowest performing regions of the MARB after accounting for their high levels of agricultural production. Instead, regions along the Missouri river including central Missouri, western Iowa, and southeastern South Dakota as well as areas near the Ohio river including southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and southern Ohio now count among the lowest performing regions using the EPI ranking scheme. We suggest that incorporation of economic production value into large-scale prioritization of agricultural conservation within the MARB is essential to effectively reduce Gulf hypoxia while maintaining food security from efficient farm production. Remote sensing can provide real-time and dynamic information for terrestrial ecosystems, facilitating effective drought monitoring. A recently proposed remotely sensed Drought Severity Index (DSI), integrating both vegetation condition and evapotranspiration information, shows considerable potential for drought monitoring at the global scale. However, there has been little research on regional DSI applications, especially concerning agricultural drought. As the most important winter wheat producing region in China, North China has suffered from frequent droughts in recent years, demonstrating high demand for efficient agricultural drought monitoring and drought impact analyses. In this paper, the capability of the MODIS DSI for agricultural drought monitoring was evaluated and the drought impacts on winter wheat yield were assessed for 5 provinces in North China. First, the MODIS DSI was compared with precipitation and soil moisture at the province level to examine its capability for characterizing moisture status. Then specifically for agricultural drought monitoring, the MODIS DSI was evaluated against agricultural drought severity at the province level. The impacts of agricultural drought on winter wheat yield during the main growing season were also explored using 8-day MODIS DSI data. Overall, the MODIS DSI is generally effective for characterizing moisture conditions at the province level, with varying ability during the main winter wheat growing season and the best relationship observed in April during the jointing and booting stages. The MODIS DSI agrees well with agricultural drought severity at the province level, with better performance in rainfed-dominated than irrigation-dominated regions. Drought shows varying impacts on winter wheat yield at different stages of the main growing season, with the most significant impacts found during the heading and grain-filling stages, which could be used as the key alert period for effective agricultural drought monitoring. The relationship between biodiversity and each ecosystem service or bundle of ecosystem services (e.g. win−win, win−lose or win−neutral) is an active field of research that requires structured and consistent information. The application of that research for conservation and decision-making can be hampered by the ambiguity found in the definition of the nursery function under the ecosystem service perspective. In this paper, we review how the role of nursery habitats is included in the ecosystem services literature, covering conceptual, biophysical and economic reflections. The role of ecosystems as nurseries is mostly analyzed in coastal environments. The main observation is that there is no consensus on the consideration of the nursery function as a service (e.g. which species or habitats) or on how to assess it (e.g. which indicators or valuation methods). After that review, we analyze three different interpretations given to the nursery function, namely the ecological, conservationist and economic point of view; and we distinguish between different types of assessment that may consider the nursery function. We conclude that the nursery function can be considered an ecosystem service on its own right when it is linked to a concrete human benefit and not when it is represented with indicators of general biodiversity or ecosystem condition. Thus, the analysis of the delivery of ecosystem services should be differentiated from the analysis of ecological integrity. Only with this distinction science may be able to quantify the link between biodiversity and ecosystem services and policy may be effective in halting biodiversity loss. Using statistical data from 285 cities in China, this paper studies the spatial correlation and interaction between manufacturing agglomeration and environmental pollution. Using a widely used spatial correlation index, bivariate Moran's I , we first estimate the spatial correlation between manufacturing agglomeration and environmental pollution. We show that there is significant spatial correlation between them, and distinct patterns of local spatial concentration are identified. Then, we use a spatial simultaneous equations (SSE) model to analyze the interaction between manufacturing agglomeration and environmental pollution. We show that manufacturing agglomeration aggravates environmental pollution, while environmental pollution restrains manufacturing agglomeration. In addition, manufacturing agglomeration and environmental pollution in any one city can be affected by manufacturing agglomeration and environmental pollution in surrounding cities through spatial spillover. It has been widely accepted that high land use intensity contributes to sandy desertification in Northern China. However, it is surprising that it is even not easy to find an explicit definition and proper indicator for the term “land use intensity” in the sandy desertification related literatures. To better understand the association between sandy desertification and its driving factors, especially in the context of the synergistic roles of both climatic and anthropogenic variables, an indicator for land use intensity was developed in this paper for quantifying the relative role of land use output on different kinds of vegetation cover. The results indicated land use intensity increased rapidly from 1980 to 1995, obviously decreased from 1995 to 2000, and increased slowly after 2000 as a result of the continued increase of socioeconomic pressures and the fluctuating changes in vegetative cover. An ARDL model was established and applied to analyze the correlation between the area of bare sand land and land use intensity with the influence of annual precipitation in temporal dimension. The area of bare sand land was significantly affected by land use intensity in the long run. However, in the short run, the area of bare sand land was mainly impacted by the auto-correlation effect of itself in temporal dimension and by the annual precipitation. The improvement of the sand dunes obviously reduced the risk of sandy desertification under the condition of specific land use intensity. Before analyzing the correlation between land use intensity and sandy desertification, specific skills were applied to improve the model, including data interpolation and regression verification, since there would be regression biases resulting from the acquisition and processing of time-series data of different sources. Results showed that the area of bare sand land ( S t )and the land use intensity ( LI t ) were time-independent. Lag terms of these two variables were added to improve original model. Changes in socioeconomic pressures and ecological restoration projects had obvious influences on land use intensity. Along with the steady increase of socioecological pressures on land and the changes in vegetative cover resulting from various ecological protection strategies and ecological restoration projects, shifts in land use intensity followed a different trend with the population and the social-economic demands. Integrated impact assessment (IA) of policies in the European Commission takes place in an environment of competing problem frames, contested policy objectives and a multitude of interested actors. This paper sets out to discuss the potential value of integrating the ecosystem services (ESS) concept for improving the consideration of environmental benefits and values during framing and appraisal of new policies at European level. The discussion was based on a workshop conducted with experts encompassing their disciplinary fields to the science–policy interface. A review of recent literature and impact assessment reports from policy science and ecosystem services research allowed for a two-way contemplation. The potential integration of concepts was analysed for conceptual, technical, ethical and pragmatic aspects. It was found that indicator sets applied in the impact assessment reports follow a much less formalised structure than the reports or the procedure. An integration of the ecosystem services concept would enhance the requisite variety of indicators used, and thus contribute to the overall goal for sustainable development. Potentials for improving IA lie particularly in the up- and downscaling of benefits and values, policy relevant comparative studies and the prospective possibilities for innovation in indicator development. Based on this rationale of improving requisite variety for future decision making, the emphasis lies on a further development of the ESS concept along two pathways of operationalisation: the translation of the concept for a comprehensive approach at a higher level of abstraction (soft application), and the application of the concept for providing aggregated, quantitative and unit-based information at different steps of an IA (hard application). Until present, it has been challenging to turn the concept of ecosystem services into a practical tool in the formulation of day-to-day policies on a national or regional scale. This is largely due to the overarching nature of the concept of ecosystems services (ESs) and the lack of concrete ecosystem service typologies. In this paper, we describe the foundation process of a national ecosystem service indicator framework for Finland, beginning with the selection of nationally important ESs. We also evaluate how this set of national indicators could be scaled down to regional circumstances, or integrated in the international ecosystem assessment processes. Our aim was to develop a national framework that complies both with national circumstances and with international typologies such as the Common International Classification of Ecosystem Services (CICES) and the cascade model. We developed indicators for 28 ecosystem services (10 provisioning, 12 regulating and maintenance, and 6 cultural services), a set of four indicators for every stage of the cascade model; altogether 112 indicators. We hope that the indicator framework draws attention to questions of resilience by providing information on the different aspects of ecosystem functioning that are crucial to the provisioning of ecosystem services. Furthermore, we hope to highlight the societal dependence on ecosystem services by providing indicators of both benefits and values. Besides higher-level decision-making processes, our attempt was to provide novel ecosystem service information for regional environmental managers and decision-makers, as well as the wider public interested in local issues. Integrating both ecological and socio-economic data into one platform may help to bridge the gap between science and practical decision-making resulting in more sustainable environmental management. Landscape connectivity is of paramount importance not only in maintaining both functionality and resilience of social-ecological systems, but also in providing Ecosystem Services (ESs). Despite recent efforts, several issues still need to be faced to fully integrate ESs evaluation relating to landscape connectivity into effective plans and environmental assessment procedures. Choosing an appropriate scale of analysis is one of the most problematic topics, since it can profoundly affect the evaluation of single patch contribution to global connectivity. Moreover, the effect of different scales on ESs assessment based on spatial modelling has not yet been investigated. In this paper, an innovative approach to the assessment of Bio-Energy Landscape Connectivity (BELC) and related ESs for Biodiversity conservation, is presented, based on the PANDORA 3.0 landscape evolution model. A new index (dMtot) for the evaluation of each patch's contribution to global BELC is proposed and employed to build a new formulation for the assessment of ESs in monetary terms. A set of Non Urbanized Areas (NUAs) is therefore analyzed in the Metropolitan area of Bari (Southern Italy) across three planning scales commonly adopted in planning practice. The results bring to light the sensitivity of evaluation to the choice of scale, underlining the need to consider a higher level of analysis when local plans are drawn up for land use decision making. A thorough evaluation of this larger extension could therefore require more resources. As a result, modelling approaches that are less data and time consuming would become even more necessary. In this view, the PANDORA 3.0 model could provide a valid and reliable support, since it uses data that are usually available to land managers (e.g. land cover/land use maps, soil maps, Digital Elevation Models). Moreover, it could also be employed to assess land use scenarios at different scales relatively quickly. Limits of the current approaches and research challenges are then discussed. The final goal of the article is to provide an additional tool, which will allow ESs and Landscape Ecology concepts to be integrated not only into assessment procedures (e.g. EIA, SEA) but also into landscape and urban planning practice. Environmental water requirements (EWRs), including past inundation regimes, provide useful information for the conservation and management of wetlands systems. However, determining past inundation regimes is difficult as very few wetlands have historical records of water level or flow to determine EWRs. Generally, two approaches have been used to reconstruct wetland inundation regimes; remote sensing or hydrological modelling. Remote sensing methods have applied spectral indices of inundation to multi-temporal archival satellite imagery and developed simple empirical models to link inundation extent to rainfall or stream flow records. Hydrological models use a water balance approach and simple relationships between volume and area based on the wetland bathymetry to derive an inundation regime. While remote sensing approaches can provide a high spatial resolution of information, the temporal resolution is limited to an image every few weeks, and the usability of each image is subject to cloud cover. Hydrological models require some data in the region of interest for calibration, and often the model is not sensitive to the inundation variables of interest when calibrating to the data available. A study is presented where this is the case, where good results are achieved by a hydrological model when compared to downstream flow data, but very different wetland inundation regimes can be simulated. Due to this limitation, the remotely-sensed inundation regime was required as another source of information to calibrate the hydrological model, constraining the parameters involved in the modelled wetland storages. The remote-sensing constrained hydrological model provided greater confidence in the representation of processes occurring in the simulated wetland storages, and hence could be considered appropriate to be applied to a validation time period and for scenario testing. The findings of this research support the combination of remotely sensed indicators of inundation and hydrological modelling to increase confidence in the spatial representation of the dynamics of inundation. Understanding wetland inundation dynamics is critical to the understanding and management of threatened wetland ecosystems. Human activities create more reactive nitrogen than is created through natural processes every year. The excess reactive nitrogen in the environment causes various negative effects including eutrophication, climate change, acidification, and human health problems. The sources of the excess nitrogen are mainly fertilizers and animal and human waste generated by food production and consumption. Therefore, our food choices have major effects on the nitrogen load to the environment. To quantify the load, a consumption-based accounting tool, called the nitrogen footprint, has been recently developed. In current nitrogen footprint models, seafood is calculated as a single category using the same simple assumptions as livestock. However, there is a variety of types and methods of production of seafood. In addition, world per capita consumption of seafood is projected to continue expanding. In this paper, we propose a new nitrogen footprint model to evaluate the impact of seafood in detail, present the results of the model applied to Japan as a case study, and explain the important parameters that are needed to accurately evaluate the load of seafood consumption. Our model tracks the feeding steps in detail, considering differences among fed aquacultured seafood, non-fed aquacultured seafood (mainly bivalves and filter-feeding carp), and captured seafood. Our model evaluates the Japanese food nitrogen footprint of fed aquacultured seafood as 0.7 kg-N/capita/year, ca. 45% of that of all seafood, whereas the previous model evaluates it as 3.36 kg-N/capita/year. Our results demonstrate that the key factors for assessing the nitrogen load of seafood are the proportions of fed aquaculture and of plant protein in feed. In order to enable food choices that will effectively reduce nitrogen release, we provide the virtual N factors (per intake nitrogen release during production) for different seafood as 0.2 (non-fed aquacultured and captured), 4.8 (freshwater and diadromous fish), 3.9 (demersal fish), 3.4 (pelagic fish and other marine fish), and 8.2 (crustaceans). Our results show that eating more non-fed aquacultured and captured seafood and less fed-aquacultured shrimps and prawns could reduce our nitrogen load from food consumption as effectively as choosing poultry instead of beef. Although its evaluation is limited to nitrogen load related to food itself and not including the load from energy use, etc., our detailed nitrogen footprint model for different seafood categories and production sources can quantify the effectiveness of policies and actions that link sustainable consumption and sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, contributing toward the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. In the literature of ecological indicators, more attention has yet to be paid to the potential effects of spatial autocorrelation (SAC) on the prediction of plant community structure. At a selected foredune ridge in a temperate coast of South Korea, this research developed two regression models: (1) a non-spatial ordinary least squares (OLS) in which the fine-scale (ca. 10 m) variability of diversity was predicted by soil and topographic parameters and (2) a spatial model in which spatial filters extracted by spatial eigenvector mapping were incorporated as additional predictors into the original OLS. After such incorporation, a reduction apparently occurred in the predictive power of the environmental variables, especially those with an inherently high amount of SAC. For example, Mg 2+ was the most significant predictor for species diversity in OLS, but it became insignificant in spatial regression. This indicates that, during the incorporation of SAC, the predictive importance of Mg 2+ was replaced by that of spatial filters. In other words, because the SAC of Mg 2+ was inherently strong (global Moran's I = 0.68, p < 0.001), this soil attribute became redundant when the spatial filters were added to the non-spatial OLS. These discussions corroborate the general idea of this paper that SAC potentially indicates the degree of shifts in the predictive power of environmental factors for plant diversity. In sum, we suggest that environmental variables, which are highly structured over space, should be the target of special attention and care in future modeling attempts aiming to predict the spatial patterns of plant species diversity in coastal dunes. Sustainability assessment of biodiesel production is a topic of increasing importance due to the interest of governments to define sovereignty strategies and diversification of their energy matrix, and to set up the impact of biofuels production. In this context, this work aims to propose a hierarchical structure of sustainability assessment that integrates dimensions of sustainable development with principles, criteria and indicators (PC&I). The method employed to define the hierarchical structure was a comprehensive literature review, based on information search strategy and classification. About 400 documents were reviewed and 103 documents were ultimately selected, including laws, policy documents, certificates, directives and other normative documents and papers published in peer-reviewed journals. The first result of the analysis was the need to strengthen identification of the sustainable development assessment, adding the political and technological dimensions to the three traditional dimensions, social, economic and environmental, studied in this kind of evaluation. The second result was the proposal of a hierarchical framework for the sustainability assessment of biodiesel production, organized in four levels: the first level comprises the five dimensions associated with sustainable development evaluation, the second includes 13 principles, the third contains 40 criteria and the fourth level corresponds to a set of indicators that describes each criterion. In recent years veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) have been recognized as emerging contaminants, giving rise to concerns regarding their environmental impact. Due to the high number of utilized VMPs, it is necessary to develop tools (indicators) for ranking these compounds according to their environmental risk relevance. These indicators can be useful, for example, for setting up monitoring programmes, and more in general for risk management purposes. In this paper we propose a new scoring system method (RANKVET) that enables ranking the risk of VMPs for aquatic and terrestrial organisms. The procedure is fully based on the information required by the EU Directives and Regulations for marketing authorization of VMPs and Veterinary International Conference on Harmonization (VICH) guidelines. According to the latter, if the environmental risk assessment of a VMP indicates an unacceptable risk to the environment, i.e., the risk quotient (RQ) consisting of the ratio of Predicted Environmental Concentration (PEC) to Predicted No Effect Concentration (PNEC) is ≥1, then mitigation measures should be proposed by the applicant in order to reduce the risk to an acceptable level. If a risk mitigation measure does not fulfil the criteria mentioned above then the outcome of the risk assessment is that a serious risk for the environment exists. In accordance with Directive 2001/82/EC (as amended) this risk has to be weighed against the favourable aspects of a marketing authorization. The prioritization scheme is based on a quantitative approach and consist of different phases. First, for each VMP, PECs are calculated using simple exposure models and worst case assumptions. PNECs are calculated for non-target organisms representative of the considered ecosystems (soil or surface water). Then numerical scores are given to the calculated PEC/PNEC ratio. Finally, the obtained score is multiplied with a further score which is based on the relevance of the metabolic rate in animals. RANKVET can be applied for surface water and soil systems and for different farming methods (intensive or pasture) and treated species. Wastewater treatment facility is vital for sustainable urban development. In the course of removing contaminants and discharging ready-for-reuse water, wastewater treatment consumes resources and triggers environmental emission during its lifetime. A comprehensive framework to analyze the embodied ecological elements as natural resources and environmental emissions of wastewater treatment is presented in this work. The systems method as a combination of process and input–output analyses is applied and a set of indicators are accordingly devised. Two representative ecological elements, i.e., greenhouse gases emissions and solar emergy of alternative wastewater treatment systems, i.e., a traditional activated sludge wastewater treatment plant and a constructed wetland have been taken into consideration. For each ecological element, five indicators have been calculated and compared to assess the impact on climate change and resources utilizing style of the case systems. The framework raised in this paper is fully supportive for optimal decision-making among different wastewater treatment technologies, and could be transplanted to be applied to systems ecological accounting for other production systems.
