• This study identified four types of urban industrial lands. • A large number of urban industrial land needs to be decentralized. • Some urban industrial land is suitable to be converted into urban green space. Decentralization is essential for the sustainable socio-economic development of megacities. In the context of the decentralization of noncapital functions in Beijing, the renewal of inefficient urban industrial land (UIL) into urban green space (UGS) is an important way to improve the quality of the city. This paper analyzes the urban industrial land use efficiency (UILUE) and its urban green space suitability (UGSS) of 865 study units in Daxing District, Beijing, and combines bivariate spatial autocorrelation with cluster analysis. The results show that (1) the distribution of UIL in Daxing District is "dense in the north and sparse in the south", and UILUE shows a spatial pattern of "high in the west and low in the east", with a high-efficiency area of 985.85 ha, accounting for 12.06 % of the study area, and a low-efficiency area of 507.77 ha, accounting for 6.21 % of the study area. (2) Among the existing UIL, the high suitable area is 1106.46 ha, accounting for 13.57 % of the study area, and the low suitable area is 439 ha, accounting for 5.38 % of the study area. (3) Through bivariate spatial autocorrelation analysis, four types of UIL were identified, among which the low–high cluster area had the greatest potential for land conversion, with 175 study units and an area of 1335.22 ha, accounting for 16.28 % of the study area. Finally, this paper proposes recommendations for the renewal and utilization of UIL in Daxing District to provide guidance and suggestions for the decentralization of other megacities in the world. Abstract Household carbon emissions are major contributors to global emissions that is increasing recognized. In China, approximately 20 million rural populations transfer to the urban areas annually, which results in a lot of new infrastructure construction and consumer requirements. This paper quantifies the numbers and trends of urban and rural resident on energy use and carbon footprint in Beijing from 1996 to 2011 by analysis of Consumer Lifestyle Approach (CLA) and carbon footprint. It provides a better understanding of complete energy consumption and carbon emissions profile in Beijing. The results show that for the Beijing residents, when direct and indirect energy consumption and CO 2 emissions are taken into account, the total household energy consumption proportion compared to the city increases from 22.7% to 59.2%, and the total household CO 2 emissions proportion increases from 32.2% to 68.8% in the research period. In the urbanization process, total energy consumption and carbon emissions of Beijing urban residents are significantly higher than those of rural residents. However, the transformation of a rural Beijing resident into an urban Beijing resident would not create a large difference between urban and rural areas in the per-capita energy consumption and per-capita carbon footprint. Results are assessed with respect to the available scientific literature, as well as potential available technological and policy solutions. Since the implementation that different policy instruments can mitigate carbon emissions, governments are gradually combining policy measures for the same technology. The results in this paper may help promote alternative consumption strategies in household sector which could entail more reasonable resource distribution and effective reduction of both urban and rural environmental influences. • Behavior of waterscape park visitors can indicate their perceived water quality. • Mobile phone data allows such quantitative behavioral indicators such as Park visiting hours (PVH) and sub-daily Attendance Probabilities (PVA). • PVH increases with improved water quality, indicating a prolonged enjoyed ecosystem service. • Integration of multisource big data is prospective approach to assist application of behavioral metrics in ecological and environmental issues. The rational evaluation of pollution control measures is crucial for advancing water pollution management, ensuring water quality, and creating high-standard urban environments. Currently the evaluation heavily relies on water quality indicators with little regard to the sense of gain of the people. In this paper, we proposed an objective indicator PVH (Park Visiting Hours) to represent the behavioral response, as a materialized sense of humans, to water quality. We demonstrated the application of PVH in four typical waterscape parks in Beijing with multi-source data, and the results showed that: (1) The Mann-Kendall Test and an independent correlation test utilizing Sina Weibo data (Chinese Twitter) indicated that PVH was significantly negatively correlated with the Satellite image based Sensory Pollution Index (SPI), as corroborated the competence of PVH to appraise the sense of gain from water quality improvement. (2) Multivariate regressions showed that an increase in SPI of 0.1 corresponds to an average 8.8 min reduction in PVH. (3) The relationship between PVH and SPI was consistent across various visitor demographics, and whether visitors were in groups or alone. This study introduced PVH as a novel but concise indicator to represent water quality-related behavior of park visitors and would inspire the use of big multisource data for measuring human perceptions of ecosystem services. Many ecosystem service (ES) items, such as the wind erosion prevention service (WEPS), have spatially separated service provision and benefit areas (SPA & SBA), which are connected by directional ecosystem services flows (ESF). Clarifying the specific spatial relationships between the SPA and SBA is of potential scientific and policy importance for such directional flow-conveyed ES. Much of the existing research has focused on the identification of SBA based on a given SPA. However, due to the asymmetry of supply-based and demand-based ESFs and geospatial heterogeneity, this relationship cannot be directly inferred backward to obtain the SPA for a given SBA. In this paper, we propose a methodological framework along with computational methods to delineate the SPA of a given SBA. Our methods feature ESF carrier dynamics-based algorithms to determine the specific path of the ESF which is enabled by an adapted Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model, as well as quantification approaches for evaluating the actual realization of ecosystem services value (RESV) with the support of the Revised Wind Erosion Equation (RWEQ) model. We demonstrate the applicability of our methods with the example of three mega-cities in northern China that are severely affected by the wind erosion problem. The results show that the spatial distribution of wind erosion source areas in the three cities are different, and the SPA based on the trajectory weights shows a decreasing trend from the city center to periphery, with those in the cities of Beijing and Taiyuan mainly concentrated in the northwestern direction, while the high RESV zones in the SPA are mainly concentrated in the desert areas. In the time series, wind erosion affecting these three cities mainly occurred in late April and May. The study provides a methodological and empirical basis for applied ecological analysis including the delineation of the ecological hinterlands of cities, or the formulation of precise ecological compensation programs. • Water use efficiency evaluation based on 3D water footprint using SBM model. • Two scenarios for water use efficiency evaluation. • Analyzing the driving forces affecting water footprint change using the LMDI model. Water shortage and the conflict between water supply and demand have become the main constraints to the sustainable development of sustainable societies in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. Scientific evaluation of water usage efficiency and clarification of the three-dimensional water ecological footprint (EF 3D) drivers are of great significance for the collaborative environmental management of BTH region. This paper firstly explores the evolution of water footprint breadth (EF size), depth (EF depth) and EF 3D in BTH region from 2004 to 2020. Using the super-efficient SBM (Slacks-Based Measure) model with EF 3D to evaluate the water use efficiency of BTH region in two scenarios. 22 impact factors were selected to analyze the dynamics affecting the change of EF 3D in BTH region by using the LMDI (Logistic Mean Divided Index) model. The results show that: (1) The water resources pressure of the three provinces are in the overload state from 2004 to 2020, and the EF 3D is at its maximum in 2011–2015. The EF depth of BTH region is fluctuating up and then fluctuating down around 2012, and the most serious capital consumption of water resources stock is in Tianjin. (2) The water resources in Hebei are all in inefficient use. The water resources in Tianjin are in a state of inefficient use in some study years, and since 2014, the water resources are in a state of fluctuating increase and high efficiency. As for Beijing, the water resources are in a state of efficient use in the study years. On the whole, scenario 2 better reflects the water resources utilization efficiency situation and is more in line with the real situation. (3) The water structure and endowment of water resources are pivotal factors positively influencing the EF 3D. To mitigate EF 3D and achieve sustainable utilization of water resources, both Hebei and Tianjin have ample room for progress in elevating agricultural water-saving technologies, optimizing industrial structure, and enhancing water usage patterns. Agricultural water consumption is no longer the primary driver of water resource depletion in Beijing, necessitating focused attention on the impact of external water diversions in terms of local water displacement, optimization of water usage structures, and their role in supporting socio-economic development. Urbanization nowadays is a very important driving force for China's social and economic development, but the resource shortage and pollution accompanied have troubled China especially in the urban areas. As the capital of China, Beijing is a mega-city and densely populated. Its development and prosperity is supported by a large amount of material consumption, rendering a severe shortage of natural resources and serious pollution. Underlying the premise of maintaining its development and prosperity, Beijing is facing an enormous challenge in dealing with heavy pollution load. Therefore, it is a very important step to decouple the relationship between economic development and environmental pollution. This paper makes a study on the relationship between the economic growth and pollution load for Beijing based on the analysis of Environmental Kuznets Curves (EKC) which builds an econometric model using data over the period 1990–2014. We found the intensity of most pollutants have arrived at the turning point around 2006 while the total amount of most emissions remain at a high level, this is a favorable initiation for the transforming the development patterns as it has begun to decouple the pollution intensity and economy. Based on the statistics, this paper further analyzes the driving factors behind the active change. We found that the adjustment of industrial structure, a reasonable city planning, powerful measures in pollutants control and technology advance, contribute a lot to the transformation. Especially in the recent years, Beijing and correlative regions took joint measures to prevent and reduce air pollution, which have an apparent functions. In recent years, economy grows rapidly in China but it also pays a huge cost of destroy of resources and environment, and energy-saving and emission reduction has become a hot topic. This paper aims at calculating the environmental efficiency and environmental total factor productivity (TFP) of Beijing under the constraint of energy-saving and emission reduction to explore the relationship of the city’s economy and environment. We used an improved directional distance function – Biennial Directional Distance Function (BDDF) and Luenberger (L) productivity index which is corresponding to BDDF. This method can decompose the efficiency and productivity according to input and output factors and solve the problem of infeasible solution. The study found that the environmental efficiency of Beijing is different from regions and it takes on a concave distribution from the urban center to the edge of the city. Energy inputs and environmental pollution are the main influence factors of environmental inefficiency. The environmental TFP of the two central regions is higher than the two fringe regions, and through the decomposition results, we learned that the technology progress and the energy-saving emission reduction are the core of productivity growth momentum. From the change trend, the environmental efficiency of Beijing reached a high level in 2011 and followed by a slow decline. Whereas environmental TFP showed a tortuous rise trend which is down to the lowest in 2011–2012 and up to the highest in 2015. Based on our conclusions, we can say that energy-saving and emission reduction work of Beijing has made some good achievements, but with the difficulties increase we should take more reasonable measures according to the actual situation and join together to make the results of energy-saving and emission reduction work more effective. Freshwater ecosystem service is essential to human’s survival and development. Many studies have documented the spatial differences in the supply and demand of ecosystem services and proposed the concept of ecosystem services flows. However, few studies characterize freshwater ecosystem service flow quantitatively. Therefore, our paper aims to quantify the effects of freshwater ecosystem service flow on downstream areas. We developed a freshwater ecosystem service flow model and applied it in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region, China, for the year of 2000, 2005, and 2010. We assessed the regional water security with an improved freshwater security index by integrating freshwater service provision, consumption and flow; and found that most areas of the BTH region (69.2%) were affected by upstream freshwater flows. The areas achieving water security in the region also expanded to 66.9%, 66.1%, and 71.3%, which were 6.4%, 6.8% and 5.7% increments compared to no-flow situation, in 2000, 2005 and 2010, respectively. Setting quota for human water consumption is suggested to further improve water security. These results highlight the need to fully understand the connections between distant freshwater ecosystem service provision and local freshwater ecosystem service consumption. • The carbon emission coefficients method and net ecosystem productivity (NEP) were used to evaluate urban carbon emissions and green space carbon sinks, respectively. • A multi-objective programming model (MOP) was constructed to derive the optimal solution of the amount of urban green space based on the carbon balance theory. • Combined with ventilation resistance and species migration resistance assessment, priority distribution areas of green space in 2035 were identified. • The PLUS model was introduced to optimize the spatial pattern of urban green space. • Optimized green space network stability and carbon sinks will be enhanced in 2035. Cities experience the most intensive level of human activity. As a result, more than 60 % of global CO 2 emissions come from urban areas. Urban green space has the dual ecological benefits of increasing carbon sinks and reducing carbon emissions. Creating green space is essential to promoting the development of a low-carbon cycle in a city. Therefore, exploring the quantitative structure and spatial pattern optimization of urban green space from the perspective of carbon balance can effectively improve the total carbon sink of a city. Based on the carbon balance theory, this paper first evaluates the carbon offsetting capability (COC) of urban green space in Beijing in 2020. Then, CO 2 emissions is predicted, COC improvement targets are established, and the quantity of standard green space is calculated under these targets in 2035. A multi-objective programming model (MOP) is constructed to derive the optimal solution to determine the amount of standard green space needed to meet the constraints of urban development planning and maximize the carbon sink. A circuit model is used to identify the priority distribution area of green space in 2035, and the Patch-generating Land Use Simulation (PLUS) model is used to simulate the spatial pattern optimization results. The results show that: (1) CO 2 emissions in Beijing caused by human activities in 2020 totaled about 240.12 million tons, the net absorption of CO 2 of green space was about 8.99 million tons, and the COC was about 3.74 %; (2) in 2035, Beijing's CO 2 emissions will be about 265.40 million tons. Under 5 %, 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, and 25 % COC improvement gradients, the demand for standard green space will be 12,204.80 km2, 12,763.80 km2, 13,353.85 km2, 13,943.90 km2, and 14,533.96 km2, respectively; (3) the results of the Multi-Objective Programming (MOP) model show that the optimal COC in 2035 is 4.19 %, and the standard green space quantity is 13,012.24 km2; (4) In 2035, Beijing's urban green space will be characterized by a network structure of circular radiation. The optimized COC is 4.37 %, and the standard green space quantity is 13,577.86 km2, which is largely consistent with the MOP model's predicted result. People residing near stable urban heat islands (UHIs) experience a high long-term heat exposure, and the health consequences of such islands may be more severe than those of an expanding UHI; however, these areas are hidden in the overall heat island and not focused on. We developed a novel approach to identify the locations and ranges of stable UHIs by considering multiple frequency urban heat islands (MFUHIs). The MFUHIs were identified through multi-temporal remote sensing data and morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA), and the approach was applied in the case area of Beijing, the capital city of China. Specifically, the MFUHIs in Beijing were classified according to the landscape characteristics, based on the field survey and remote sensing data. The landscape indicators included land-use types, biophysical parameters (normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), proportion of water areas, and impervious surface area (ISA)) and 3-D metrics (building density and building heights), which were considered causative factors. The relationship between the land surface temperature and landscape indicators was examined using ordinary least-squares (OLS) regressions and the Area Weighted Contribution Index (AWCI). The results showed that the MFUHIs in Beijing have four key zones, in which the surface temperature is more than 9 ℃ higher than the average temperature of the urban area, and the air temperature is 3.3–8.5 ℃ higher than the built-up temperature in the non-UHI area. The OLS regression and spatial statistics of the landscape indicators and surface temperature indicated that the regions in which area where MFUHIs occur could be characterised by a relatively high degree of impervious surface coverage, lack of green space and water area, and presence of low-rise and high-density buildings. The average number of building-floors in MFUHIs was between 1.93 and 2.64, and the number of floors in the entire study area was less than 3.6. Moreover, the building-densities in the MFUHIs were 16.25% to 27.62% higher than that in the whole study area. According to the result of the AWCI and field survey, the MFUHIs were classified into transportation, historical block, commercial, and city village high-temperature centre. The main findings indicated that certain regions between the city centre and rural areas, in which sound planning is not implemented, are the hotspots of UHI mitigation and risk elimination regions. This study estimates the economic values of and the dominant contributors to five key ecosystem services of wetlands in Beijing, by using the wetland inventory data in 2014 and economic valuation methods. Results indicate that the 51,434 ha of wetlands in Beijing annually provide 2.07 billion m3 of flood regulation, 944.01 million m3 of water provision, 42,154 tons of chemical oxygen demand (COD) purification, 3.03 PJ of heat absorption, and 9587 ha of habitat. Their economic values are estimated to be 15.89 billion RMB, 1.19 billion RMB, 169 million RMB, 421 million RMB, and 1.08 billion RMB in 2014 (RMB: Chinese currency, US$1 = RMB 6.14), respectively. The total values of five key wetland ecosystem services reach 18.76 billion RMB. In addition, the reservoir and river wetlands in Miyun, Yanqing, Fangshan, Huairou, and Mentougou Districts contribute 78% of key ecosystem services, whereas the urban wetlands in Xicheng, Dongcheng, Haidian, Chaoyang, and Tongzhou Districts more conveniently serve densely local people, hence they should be given particular attentions. In this paper, we develop the valuation methods of wetland ecosystem services, and recommend diversified strategies, regulations, and programs to protect the remaining wetlands in Beijing. For the analysis of a long time series of image data remotely sensed by satellite, the outliers caused by atmospheric, lighting, and sensor measurement errors are significant, and it is difficult for traditional algorithms to effectively recover the true image value. To address this, this paper proposes a theoretical model for predicting spatio-temporal variation based on deep learning to identify and correct invalid and anomalous values in extended time series data. This study corrected and analyzed the results of Remote Sensing based Ecological Index inversion of Landsat data of the Miyun Reservoir watershed from 1985 to 2021. The findings and conclusions of this study are important for the analysis of long time series image data from satellite remote sensing and for improving regional ecological evaluation and sustainable development planning. Natural capital is the limiting and irreplaceable factor in human welfare and sustainability. Regarding the “constancy of total natural capital” as a prudent minimum condition for sustainability, a three-dimensional ecological footprint ( 3D EF) model can distinguish the occupation of natural capital stock and the consumption of natural capital flows, and achieve reliable measures of the human demand on and nature's supply of natural capital. Taking the case of Beijing City, which faces a serious contradiction between its rapid social development and scarce natural capital, this paper presents a multidimensional “ecology-equity-efficiency” framework to quantify the sustainability of natural capital utilization. Our results indicate that (1) the consumption of capital stocks and capital flows complement each other through contrasting footprint size ( EF size ) and footprint depth ( EF depth ); (2) natural capital utilization in the 16 districts of Beijing City can be grouped into four categories. In Zone I (which includes Dongcheng, Xicheng, and Shijingshan), the depletion of stocks seriously exceeds the appropriation of flows, and thus its ecological sustainability status is the lowest compared to the other three zones; (3) according to the equity measures using both the Gini coefficient of EF size and the variation coefficient of EF depth , natural capital utilization within each of the current functional zones is significantly more balanced than that among the four functional zones or the 16 districts. Additionally, natural capital utilization within the Urban Function Extended Zone is more imbalanced than that of the other three functional zones, indicating that Shijingshan may be classified as part of the Core Function Zone; (4) the efficiency of natural capital utilization zones can be ranked as follows: IV > III > II > I, with Huairou possessing the best efficiency structure of low EF depth , medium HDI , and high EFF ; (5) according to our comprehensive evaluation of the sustainability of natural-capital use, Zone II effectively balances ecology, equity, and efficiency at present, whereas Zones I, III, and IV may benefit from a stronger emphasis on efficiency, equity, and ecology in the future, respectively. • A CG-GSO model is proposed to measure the urbanization development level. • The model restores the nonlinear urbanization development in urban agglomeration. • The JJJ urban agglomeration is worse than single regions on urbanization development. • The obstacle factors of single regions and urban agglomeration are different. The Beijing(Jing)-Tianjin(Jin)-Hebei(Ji) (JJJ) urban agglomeration is one of the three major urban agglomeration in China, which plays an important strategic role in China's regional development pattern. Based on the concern of inter-relationship within urban agglomeration, this paper creatively proposed a comprehensive gravity-Gram Schmidt Orthogonalization coupling model (CG-GSO) to quantitatively measure the urbanization development level at different regional scales. Compared with the information entropy method, the CG-GSO model was more reliable and fairer in evaluating the urbanization development of an urban agglomeration in the inter-annual dimension. We used the obstacle factor model to find out important ways to realize sustainable development at different regional scales. According to the trends from 2003 to 2017, the urbanization development levels were predicted by using the gray forecast model at different regional scales during 2018–2030. There was an upward trend in urbanization development at different regional scales. Compared with the internal single regions, a high starting and slow developing trend was in the urban agglomeration. In Beijing, the obstacle factors in urbanization development were in the demographic, social and eco-environmental subsystems. However, the obstacle factors were in the economic, eco-environmental and social subsystems in Tianjin, Hebei and JJJ urban agglomeration. The forecast results showed that urbanization development was going strong in internal regions from 2018 to 2030, while the overall urbanization development was slow in urban agglomeration. Urbanization development should focus on labor redistribution, weakening the boundary on social welfare, improving the efficiency of economic development and paying attention to protecting eco-environment for taking the sustainable development road in the JJJ urban agglomeration. Although a large number of studies have explored the long-term and large-scale coupling effect of urbanization and eco-environment, there is a lack of finer spatiotemporal method and assessment. Therefore, this paper proposes a monthly-scale pixel-based coupling coordination degree (CCD) model, aiming to explore the relationship between urban socioeconomic activity intensity (SAI) and regional eco-environment (REE) in Beijing during the period of January 2018 to May 2020 based on nighttime light data and MODIS images. The results show that the SAI in Beijing has shown a trend of increasing, and the overall REE was relatively stable during the investigated period. The CCD between SAI and REE in Beijing has been improving both spatially and quantitatively. Until May 2020, more than 50% of the human activity areas were in a state of high-level coordinated, and the mean CCD reached a basic-coordinated level. A schematic model is further built to explain the characteristics and process of coupling coordinated interactions between socioeconomic activity and eco-environment. The inner-annual micro-scale analysis and assessment provide theoretical support for fine-scale monitoring and high-quality urban development planning and policies from decision-makers. Abstract: The identification of the relationships between different landscape services is important in social–ecological complex systems, especially in areas with intensive human activities. In this paper, Beijing and its peripheral regions are taken as a case study to calculate and map the intensities of five classic landscape services including material production, carbon storage, soil retention, habitat conservation, and population support based on grid maps. Overlap and correlation analyses were used to identify multiple service hotspots and the relationships between landscape services. The results show that (1) landscape services have spatial heterogeneity: high-intensity area of material production and population support is on the southeast plains of this region and high-intensity area of soil retention and habitat conservation is on the northwest; (2) approximately 96.03% of the region can provide at least one type of landscape services, whereas approximately three-quarters of the area provide multiple services, with the multiple service hotspots surrounding Beijing and Tianjin; (3) correlations exist between all pairs of landscape services, but strong correlations (correlation coefficient >0.5 or <−0.5) exist between four pairs, which are soil retention and habitat conservation (0.672), soil retention and population support (−0.613), habitat conservation and population support (−0.540), and material production and population support (0.529); (4) the services can be divided into two trade-off service bundles: the “natural” bundle, which contains carbon storage, soil retention, and habitat conservation, and the “artificial” bundle, which contains material production and population support. Only 4.19% of the area in this region contains these service bundles simultaneously. Finally, an improved understanding of the relationships between services was illustrated, and the importance of such services was highlighted for decision-makers and stakeholders. • We improved the urbanization effects indicator by considering built-up areas. • Urbanization promoted annual precipitation in developed urban areas of temperate zone. • High uncertainties of urbanization effects existed in coastal cities. Rapid urbanization plays important roles in modifying regional climate. The effects of urbanization on annual precipitation in temperate climate zone were complicated and have not been fully investigated. In this study, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region of North China was selected as research area and field observations of inter-annual precipitation from 1980 to 2015 were utilized to conduct the spatiotemporal analysis and to extract the urbanization effects. Combined statistical methods were applied and the urbanization effects indicator (UE) was created to quantify the roles of urban development on annual precipitation by combining the land cover change of cities and urban–rural precipitation differences. The paper found following main results: (1) In 2000 s, annual precipitation increased faster in urban areas (slope = 7.165 mm/yr) than in rural areas (slope = 4.954 mm/yr). The urbanization effects on the increasing of precipitation have been implied by comparisons of urban–rural difference between 2000 s (slope = 2.211 mm/yr) and 1980 s (slope = 0.165 mm/yr). (2) Rapid urbanization led to increasing of annual precipitation. Built-up areas correlated higher with urban precipitation than with rural precipitation in 9 of 13 cities, and were used as weights to improve the urbanization effects indicator (UE). (3) As the largest and the most developed city, Beijing presented the highest urbanization effects (UE = 44.5) on the increasing inter-annual precipitation, which was 51% higher than the secondary city of Chengde (UE = 21.71). The coastal cities such as Tianjin, Qinhuangdao and Tangshan presented negative UE values probably due to the strong sea-land energy interactions. This study contributes new findings to the effects of urbanization on annual precipitation in temperate climate zone and could help understand the feedback of land surface changes to variations of atmospheric circulation. The purpose of water resources carrying capacity (WRCC) research is to meet the sustainable utilization of water resources and realize its sustainable development strategy. Scientifically evaluating the carrying capacity of regional water resources is extremely important. In this study, a variable precondition S-type cloud algorithm (VPSCA) is developed for assessment of regional WRCC based on social economic subsystem, water resources subsystem, ecological and environmental subsystem including thirteen indicators, which can overcome the shortcoming that the existing evaluation methods rarely consider fuzziness, randomness, and dynamic variability of parameters at the same time. First, forward S-type cloud generator algorithm (FSCGA) is developed based on segmented S-type membership function. On this basis, precondition S-type cloud generator algorithm (PSCGA) is proposed. Moreover, the VPSCA is developed by embedding PSCGA into variable fuzzy evaluation (VFE) method. Taking Beijing as a typical research area, this paper analyzes and forecasts the comprehensive benefits of water supply of the Middle Route of South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SWDP) in 2030 using VPSCA. The results show that SWDP can increase the carrying capacity of local water resources by 3.80%. In addition, feasibility and validity of VPSCA are further verified by comparison with other existing methods. • Studying on dynamic ecological footprint (EF) in Jing-Jin-Ji from 1996 to 2020. • Six impact factors for driving EF is decomposed. • The EF in Jing-Jin-Ji will increase of 10% from 2015 to 2020. The ecological footprint (EF) describes the complex relationship between the eco-environment and economic development. EF dynamics can better reflect the appropriation of natural resources in various countries or regions compared with previous studies. This paper identified six dominant factors including population, per capita GDP, three major industrial added values, and energy consumption using grey correlation model for the EF changes of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) region from 1996 to 2015. Then, we predicted the EF of the Jing-Jin-Ji region from 2016 to 2020 based on support vector machine model. (1) Since 1996, the EF and per capita EF of the overall Jing-Jin-Ji region have increased, of which those of Hebei Province and Tianjin increased while Beijing decreased. (2) Energy consumption dominated the EF of Jing-Jin-Ji region. The population of Beijing had a high correlation coefficient of 0.735 with the local EF, and the degree of correlation between the EF and per capita GDP was 0.812 in Hebei Province. In Tianjin, the added value of the tertiary industry was closely correlated with its EF, with a correlation coefficient of 0.741. (3) The EF of the Jing-Jin-Ji region will reach 778.30 million hectares by 2020, an increase of 10% compared with the value in 2015. • An UM and LCA unified approach to study urban systems. • A survey based on urban subdimensions and complex systems is proposed. • A multi-layer complex network model based on the survey is tested on a case study. In recent decades, the close correlation between urban development and the concept of sustainability has become increasingly evident and important. This is demonstrated by European Union policies concerning EU cities and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including sustainable development goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable cities and communities. In the context of increasing urbanization, it is essential to find innovative methods to manage urban living systems and to establish a standard method for assessing the environmental performance of cities and their infrastructures. A unified and complete methodology for assessing policies for urban sustainability that takes into consideration urban complexity is currently lacking. In this paper, we integrate the Urban Metabolism and Lice Cycle Assessment approach to assess urban sustainability by developing a multi-dimensional measure framework applied to cities. Our aim is to provide a holistic view of the city and unveiling the interconnections among a set of urban dimensions identified by means of an approach based on complex systems science and complex networks. We also propose a specific survey to investigate the city in a multi-dimensional perspective and suggest key indicators based on network centrality measures for investigating and comparing the interconnections among a set of urban dimensions specifically identified (e.g. energy, material, transport).
